Silver Lake deal a huge opportunity – Dearns Matt Markham Planning is already under way at Mid Canterbury Rugby to ensure its share of funds from the massive Silver Lake deal will benefit the community game. That’s the word from an excited Mid Canterbury Rugby chief executive Tanya Dearns after the confirmation of a $500,000 cash injection for her union as part of the $200 million commercial deal with US private equity firm, Silver Lake. The deal got rubber-stamped by New Zealand Rugby at a special general meeting last week, which saw the 26 provincial unions and the Maori Rugby Board vote in favour with an 89 to one majority around the room. Silver Lake’s investment in a new commercial entity would see it have a stake in all revenue-generating assets of New Zealand Rugby. “It’s a really exciting time, not just for rugby in Mid Canterbury, but across New Zealand,” Dearns said. “There’s been a lot of work go in over the past 18 months to two years to get this over the line and I think the unions walked into that meeting last week with a lot of confidence in what they were voting for.” The final stages of the deal are expected to be completed in
the next two weeks, so Dearns said it was important to not get too far ahead of the game until everything was finalised. But once that point does arrive, then the discussions would begin – but not just around the table at board level. Part of the investment would see $37 million split among the NPC unions, who would get $1 million each, while the Heartland Unions, which included Mid Canterbury, would receive $500,000. Clubs across the country would also be able to draw from a $7.5 million pool and a new legacy fund would also be established for future projects with $60 million invested. “We’ll obviously have some initial discussions and get together and sit down as a union and a board to talk about how we are going to go about best utilising the opportunity,’’ Dearns said. “But in my eyes, it is also a huge opportunity for our clubs, who play such a massive part in the game, to have their input as well.” A number of legacy projects look set to be at the forefront as major benefactors of the deal locally, but Dearns wanted to wait until everything had been discussed and tabled before identifying exactly which projects would be focused on. From the $7.5 million fund made available for affiliated clubs across New Zealand, each club would be allocated a portion of the national fund pool based on their player numbers. They would be able to apply for

Overall, the Silver Lake funding boost provided Mid Canterbury with an opportunity to get some “real go forward’’, according to Dearns. “It gives us a real opportunity
to not only consolidate a number of these projects, but also to start planning a lot more for the future of the game here locally and get some real go forward. “It’s really exciting.”

A royal high tea in Harland St fessed royalist, decided to combine her two passions into one celebration. “I think the Queen is a wonderful historic figure. I figure 70 years is worth celebrating”, White said. So White decided to host a party, inviting neighbours to dress up like a royal and to bring a dish. White also hoped this would give neighbours a chance to meet up and sign up to the Neighbourhood Support group. “People don’t traditionally meet their neighbours like they use to,” White said. White hopes the community can be each other’s eyes and ears.

Dames, knights; three of each
Stand up and salute Dame Silvia Cartwright and Sir Tipene O’Regan. The pair are new additional members of the Order of New Zealand Queen’s Birthday Honours announced yesterday. Usually there are only 20 members of the Order of New Zealand, but additional members can be added to commemorate important royal, state or national occasions. As part of the honours to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Cartwright and O’Regan received New Zealand’s highest honour. In total, 187 people received Queen’s Birthday and Platinum Jubilee Honours. The list includes three new Knights and three new Dame Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit. Dame Silvia Cartwright said it is truly humbling to be given New Zealand’s highest honour, particularly in connection with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Dame Silvia said Queen Elizabeth II is a remarkable woman, and anyone who has met and talked to her will understand her importance in the history of the British Empire, Britain and the wider Commonwealth. Dame Silvia said her whole life since her adolescence has been associated with the law, having been a judge in New Zealand or internationally since 1981. She said that had led to her interest in international law, and also into issues around the advancement of women. She said New Zealand is much honoured

internationally for our promotion of women, and while there is much to be proud of, there was still progress to be made. “There is a vast number of women who are in the lower-paid segments of the community and in the not-so-well-educated parts of the community whose welfare and advancement need a lot of attention. “I know we give a great deal to these segments of society, but we have a long way to go yet to ensure that all women have the opportunities that I’ve had.” There are three new Knights Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit,
and three new Dame Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit. The new knights are Dr Patrick Hohepa for services to Maori culture and education, Heughan (Hugh) Rennie (CBE QC) for services to governance, the law, business and the community, and Dr Collin Tukuitonga for services to Pacific and public health. Ruth Aitken (ONZM) has been made a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to netball, along with Judge Carolyn Henwood (CNZM) for service to State, youth and
the arts, and Dr Judith (Judy) McGregor (CNZM) for services to human rights and health. Dame Judy McGregor said the honour was a wonderful acknowledgement for her and all those who have supported her. Dame Judy said a highlight of her career was working undercover as an aged care worker during the Human Rights Commission statutory inquiry into the sector. She said it highlighted for her how incredibly exhausting the work was, emotionally and physically while being paid $14 an hour. Dame Judy said the work was like a form of modern-day slavery. “The health sector in New Zealand relies on women and we’ve got to value them properly. I’m not sure if the damehood will make much difference but it gives you that slight clout when you speak up.” Others to be honoured in the Queen’s Birthday and Platinum Jubilee Honours include Benji Marshall who is made a companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to rugby league, along with John Monaghan, who has been involved with Fonterra since its creation in 2001, for services to the dairy industry, and artist Lisa Reihana for her services to the arts. Reihana’s large-scale video installation In Pursuit of Venus [infected] represented New Zealand at the 2017 Venice Biennale, and a large installation of Te Wheke a Muturangi is currently on display in Wellington Harbour.
Brutal assault on sleeping baby lands Ashburton man in prison ASHBURTON GUARDIAN AND STUFF An Ashburton man has been jailed after brutally assaulting a four-month-old baby, including breaking her eye-sockets, before turning on her mother. Lenoel Patrick Leef, 31, has been sentenced to three years and 11 months’ jail after appearing before Judge Joanna Maze in the Timaru District Court. He had earlier admitted charges of burglary, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, assault with intent to injure and aggravated assault in relation to the incident on April 30, 2020.
Graphic content This story includes details of abuse that may be upsetting. According to the summary of facts, Leef began acting strangely after consuming alcohol, cannabis and a tab of acid while visiting a friend. He went to the kitchen, grabbed a knife, put it to his throat and cut himself, before he left, climbing a fence into a neighbouring property. There he banged on the back-
door of the house and shouted: “I know you are in there”. Leef then smashed his way into the house via a glass sliding door and fell on the floor – landing beside the sleeping four-month-old baby. He then launched an attack on the baby, punching her in the head and body before her mother came to her aid – attempting to protect her from the unknown intruder by picking her up and trying to run away. Leef then turned his attention to the mother, grabbing her by the hair and punching her in the face and head – causing her to drop her baby as she was attacked. When police arrived at the
house, they found Leef lying on a bed. He told an officer: “I’m going to f... you up”, before punching him in the face. The baby’s injuries included abrasions to the top of the scalp, swelling to the right temple and right cheek, and blood in the right ear. A scan later revealed bilateral fractures of both her eye sockets. At the sentencing, Liz Bulger, appearing for Leef, told the court that her client had been assessed as being at low risk of committing any further offences, “subject to that issue with drugs and alcohol”. She said he was open to a re-
storative justice process, and a referral had been made, but she had not heard anything more about it. Judge Maze said she had already taken the report into account, and did not think there was any adjustment she could make. Crown prosecutor Shawn McManus submitted there was no reason to depart from the sentencing indication provided. Addressing Leef, Maze said she had given him all the credit she could give for his expressions of remorse, which she accepted as genuine. But, she said, the pre-sentence report recognised imprisonment “is the only realistic outcome”.

Building better minds, kids Daniel Alvey A Methven after-school brick club is helping shape Lego masters of the future. The group is based out St John’s Church in Methven and is not all about playing with Lego, there are real learning applications. Organiser Jayne Clark got the idea to put the group together after watching Lego Masters, and another documentary which focused on how Lego can be a great learning tool. “The documentary said how good it was for children with autism, how much educational value it’s got, for fine motor skills, listening, reading instructions and working as a team,” Clark said. The group was able to get some
funding from the church to help buy some Lego, but needs more help and to get any Lego that people are no longer using. “I think people can grow out of it because they run out of ways to play with Lego,” Clark said. The group is for all ages, including adults, and Clark encourages adults to come, because they can also provide guidance to some of the younger children in the group. Clark said there are many opportunities which are important for children’s growth. The oncea-week get-together gets the kids off their screens for a day, and allows them to play with Lego that their families may not be able to afford. The group is still looking for volunteers who can give one afternoon a week to help members grow. Clark said the more supervisors there are, she can then accommodate more younger people.

Funds for new footpaths Jonathan Leask An Ashburton District Council budget reshuffle means some new footpaths are back in the running for the next financial year. Just which footpaths would fit in the reshuffled budget is still to be finalised, but the Ashburton District Council plans to reprioritise funds to make it happen. The council had included new footpath construction
in its long-term plan (LTP) but that was before the Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency had finalised its funding, only approving 50 per cent of what had been requested, which did not include money for new footpaths. Initially, the council had deferred the new footpaths from the annual plan but following requests in the submissions they have reinstated them, requiring a budget reshuffle. The council decided to reprioritise $197,000 of the low cost-low risk work funding programme and just over $566,000 of its unsubsi-

Young Farmer of the Year grand final ramps up By Pat Deavoll Around 800 people are getting ready to take over Whangarei for the three-day FMG Young Farmer of the Year grand final. Representing Aorangi is Tom Adkins, 23, who has spent the last two years as a block manager on Caberfeidh Station, a 6000-hectare farm running around 33,000 stock units. Originally from Whanganui, Adkins was raised on a 400ha sheep and beef farm breeding and finishing Coopworth ewes and mixed breeding cows with progeny sold as weaners. He is a member of the Upper Waitaki Young Farmers’ Club and is the regional chair for Aorangi Young Farmers. In the competition, held from Thursday 7 to Saturday 9 July, seven FMG Young Farmer of the Year grand finalists, 28 FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year competitors, and 63 AgriKidsNZ competitors from across the country will battle it out for their respective national titles. They’re the top contestants from their regions – Northern, Waikato Bay of Plenty, East Coast, Taranaki Manawatu, Tasman, Aorangi and Otago Southland – and qualified for the grand final from regional finals held at the start of this year. Senior competitors had to qualify for regionals

but we also want a spectacle. We want it to be awesome to watch for everyone, regardless of their experience within the sector,” she said. The FMG Young Farmer of the Year grand final kicks off on
Thursday 7 which is known as technical day, held at the Hundertwasser Art Centre. The NZYF Tournament Series finals will also take place at a range of locations, open to the public. Friday, July 8 will be one of the biggest days with the practical day going down at Barge Showgrounds from 7am to 3pm, which is free and open for all spectators with hundreds expected. All 98 competitors will go headto-head in a series of practical and theoretical challenges as well as a number of modules. The practical day has historically involved big machinery, building, livestock, and more with agrisports, farmlets, and race off challenges across the three levels of the contest. Lynch said everything will have a bit of a ‘Northland flavour’ this year. “A lot of people involved in Northland’s sector are wearers of many hats, so there will be no straight farming skillset required on the day. “There will be lots of different challenges contestants will have to face that relate to our industry, not exclusively on-farm.”

Scientists teach robots to detect mastitis Pat Deavoll Lincoln University computer scientists have been part of modelling a way to better control and manage a disease that costs New Zealand dairy farmers $280 million a year. Professor Sandhya Samarasinghe, and Professor Don Kulasiri, were among the co-authors of a study conducted with data from the Van Leeuwen Dairy Group’s commercial robotic dairy farm at Makikihi which designed and built a computational model to help efficient and accurate detection of mastitis in dairy cattle herds. The robot milkers use sensors to detect the disease. The study worked out their performance could be improved significantly by decreasing the number of false-positive cases they picked up. A deep neural network (DNN) was used to build, train and validate a classification model using variable combinations, including variables that have not been studied before.
A study conducted with data from a commercial robotic dairy farm was utilised to design and built a computational model to help efficient and accurate detection of mastitis in dairy cattle herds. PHOTO SUPPLIED The model met ISO (International Standards Organization) minimum limits while outperforming other past neural network models and reduced the problem of false-positive alerts to just 3 per cent, (false negative to 1 per cent) while maintaining
a very good capability of detecting clinical cases within the herd. Dairy cattle mastitis is considered one of the most notable and costly diseases in the dairy industry worldwide; this disease severely affects dairy cattle and results in a costly cattle treat-
Backing for river project By Pat Deavoll The Hurunui Waiau Uwha Zone Delivery Team has been working with the Jed River Catchment Group to support the restoration and enhancement of the Jed River. Department of Conservation has also been supporting the work of this project, which includes willow control, planting, and maintenance. The Jed River flows under State Highway 1 on the south side of Cheviot township, through the Cheviot Hills Reserve, and
out towards Gore Bay. This project is taking place in Woolshed Creek/Hutchison Reserve – a tributary of the river. The catchment is home to a range of different landscapes and species such as lamprey, freshwater mussels, native birds, dryland ecosystems, wetlands, hill country, and of course, coastal. Environment Canterbury’s Zone Priority Fund is supporting the Jed River Catchment Group with $35,000 towards chemical-free willow control, planting, and maintenance
on a 200-metre stretch of the river in the Hutchison Reserve area. The funding will be split over two years. Management advisor Sam Thompson said the project will contribute to the overall health of the stream and enable the natural character of the river to regenerate. “Removal of exotic willows and the replacement of native species will support indigenous species of birds, fish, and insects to thrive in the area,” he said. This work is being undertaken by the Jed River Catchment Group.
ment and causes a huge decrease in milk produced from sick cows. Accurate mastitis detection helps cut treatment costs, control the disease, retain milk production levels, and maintain milk quality grade. In addition to cutting financial costs, efficient
detection helps protect cows and relieve them of the pain of mastitis. The total mastitis cost to dairying includes the drop in milk production, low-grade milk quality, cattle treatment cost, and other costs. Research data were collected from a commercial Voluntary Milking System (VMS) dairy farm with 24 DeLaval robots, milking around 1900 cows in a single 13,000m2 barn for one year. During that period, the total number of recorded milking instances was more than 1.1 million. Neural networks mastitis detection models presented in previous studies were built using data collected from research dairy farms (conventional or robotic), using small herds (100400 cows). The authors said their model being built and tested against data collected from a large-scale commercial dairy farm, made it “more realistic and representational”.

OUR VIEW
The Queen a tough act to follow
S
o now we know what the Queen really keeps in her handbag. And, no, it’s not a personalised fold-up knife for those thousands of undoubted mind-numbing, cake-cutting ceremonies she must attend. And, no, it’s not a spare set of keys for Windsor Castle either. Nor we imagine does she follow the likely lead of other rulers by having one of those untraceable burner cellphones in her handbag, with her best assassin on speed dial. Nope, dear Queen Elizabeth II, our 96-year-old monarch, stashes away a marmalade sandwich in one of her 200-plus handbags that have been such a signatory fashion accessory throughout her 70 years on the throne. The marmalade sammie reveal was part of a surprise comedy video recorded with Paddington Bear to open the platinum
Daryl Holden jubilee concert, an event in front of Buckingham Palace that the movement-restricted Queen was unable to attend. In the video, she had tea with a computer-animated Paddington Bear – a beloved children’s character in the UK. The Queen revealed that, just like the furry bear, she was partial to marmalade sandwiches and liked to keep them in her handbag. The video, hailed by some as the “best thing to happen this decade”, has certainly won over millions for showing the Queen in a humorous light we seldom see.
It was a lovely touch to a magnificent weekend of celebrations for Her Majesty, who remains one of the most recognised and loved figures on the planet.
“
No one wants that to happen anytime soon but in recent months, as she has curtailed her public schedule, it has brought further attention back to the
The problem lies with her likely replacement Charles, who hasn’t always been the most popular figure in the monarchy.
But as adored as she is by many Brits especially, there is no doubt that there is an increasing sense of readiness for the moment when London Bridge finally falls. London Bridge is Down is the code phrase that’ll be used by Government and palace officials to signify that the Queen has died when that dreaded day comes.
Queen’s health and what a royal family without her might look like. Across the ditch, a new plan to remove the Queen or her successor as head of state has emerged by a leading group wanting Australia to become a republic. They say it’s time that Australian voters had a merit-based choice about who speaks for
them as head of state, which would see the Queen, or her successor to the throne, most likely Prince Charles, pushed out. Now, in no way does this reflect negatively on the Queen, who in the twilight of her reign has consistently been the most popular royal in Britain and beyond. The problem lies with her likely replacement Charles, who hasn’t always been the most popular figure in the monarchy. There have been many calls for Charles to skip his turn on the throne and pass the crown to his more popular son, Prince William, but royal experts say there’s little chance of that happening. What this sort of increasing talk simply highlights is that the British monarchy’s global reach is diminishing, even allowing for the success of cute videos with a popular animated children’s bear.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Some people need to be constantly entertained or they will leave. Let them. You don’t need the extra work of dancing for an unappreciative audience. Seek only relationships of mutual investment. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): The pot of gold is within your realm. To find this luck, venture out in an organised way. Start close to you, and then venture in ever-wider concentric circles. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): When people laugh at or with you, whether true friends, false friends or perfect strangers, it’s a sign you make an impact. You’re changing the airflow. Let them laugh for their own reasons. Know you’re alive. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): The long story and the short story are the same, except one is way more boring. Ask for the short story or you’ll grow to resent the way some people can go on and on and on. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’ll be in the position to speak as an expert or tell a story. Your extemporaneous remarks will come off brilliantly. Little does your audience know that those are the ones you’ve rehearsed the most. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): The person who presents facts and lessons and the one who lived through them are not one and the same. Be careful not to project onto people qualities they do not possess. Take everything at face value. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You want a person to take a step, so make it easy. First order of business, make sure there’s a step in front of them that is stable and situated in a position that would be right for the taking. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You don’t usually need as much attention as some around you. It’s one reason why you end up serving others more than you get served. It’s a good way to live, but be sure to take your turn receiving today. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): The task is more challenging than you thought it would be. Things have a way of very quickly becoming a mess. Fix it fast and completely now or you’ll be fixing it for a very long time. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): The motion picture director emphasises a detail of the scene, pulls the audience away from what is going to happen, interrupting suspicions and setting the stage for a surprise. Liars do it too. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Space is the expression of the ultimate serenity. Give it to another. Make buffer zones around you. There is interest in overlapping and in space, divinity. These are high-level decisions and as you make them, you’ll make destiny.

Ashburton Guardian Tuesday, June 7, 2022
Stars come out to play Matt Markham The locals might not have a had a lot to say on a big Sunday of racing at Ashburton, but some of the future big guns of the game certainly did – both equine and human. The Ashburton Trotting Club’s new-look winter feature meeting, featuring the Sapling Stakes, the revived Champion Stakes and the new-look Helen Pope Stakes, offered up fantastic racing as the younger pacers shone. It was the Mark Purdon and Hayden Cullen barn who dominated the two main features, winning both the Helen Pope Stakes and also the Sapling Stakes, with Millwood Nike and Vinke B respectively. Millwood Nike hadn’t been seen at the races 10 days ago, winning at Timaru on debut and then sitting parked on Sunday before dashing away to win impressively in the hands of young junior driver, Olivia Thornley, who is riding the crest of an All Stars wave this season with good numbers. She’s got nine wins on the board from just 37 drives this season and picked up her second black type success for the season after winning with Don’t Stop Dreaming earlier in the year in the Kindergarten Stakes. “Everything is ticking along really well, and I am just so grateful to the trainers and owners who have been giving me so many

how quick she is when she outsprinted them up the straight. “It was pretty special.” Incidentally, it was Orange who jumped in the bike to give the All Stars their other big race win, combining with Vinke B for an all the way victory in the Sapling Stakes.
Orange was also behind classy three-year-old pacer, Republican Party who set a track record on his way to winning the rejuvenated Champion Stakes for trainers Cran and Chrissie Dalgety. While no victories fell to the locals during the day, a number featured in the finish.
Maiden trotters Slainte and Sassy Star filled second and third spots respectively in the first race of the day, Webs Reactor (Ricky May) ran a big race at a price to finish third for Willy Lake and Maui was excellent first-up late in the day when finishing third.

Southern survive another Hinds thriller By Matt Markham and Steve Devereux
Again, not pretty – but mission accomplished. Southern will head to the semi-finals of the Combined Country competition this weekend as the lone Mid Canterbury team still alive, after they beat Darfield in the final minute of their match at Hinds on Saturday. Meanwhile, in town a valiant effort from Celtic wasn’t enough to see them overcome a powerful Prebbleton team, who pushed onto the next round courtesy of a 26-17 win at Keenan’s Road. For the second week in a row, the Southern lads left their supporters chewing on their fingernails as they looked well out of contention at halftime, only to mount a second half comeback and win in the dying minutes of the match, 23-20. A fired-up Darfield threw everything they had at the Southern defence for the first 40 minutes and were rewarded as they took a 17-5 lead into the break. Matthew McAtamney was the saving grace in the first 40 minutes, taking a quick tap 30 metres out from the line and jinking and jiving his way through the Darfield defence to score a great individual try. An early second half try to Thomas McCormick put Southern back into the match, but a penalty shortly after extended the Darfield lead once again as they kept the Southern onslaught at bay. Thomas Middleton added a penalty in the 56th minute to close the gap to seven points heading into the final quarter, but Southern still had plenty of work to do. A missed penalty attempt with less than 10 minutes to go really put the pressure on Southern, and they went to work trying to create some magic. It finally came when they spun the ball wide and McCormick found a bit of space as the outside man and dashed over the line and around closer to the posts to score. Middleton stepped up for the conversion and calmly slotted it through the middle to bring the scores to level with three minutes to play. From the resulting kick-off, Southern again got on a march and found their way into the strike zone as the clock ticked up 80 minutes. Some good work around the ruck saw a penalty offered and Middleton, with the weight of the Southern region on his shoulders, stepped up to the mark again and put the ball through the middle of
The Semi-finals Southern v Glenmark Cheviot at Hinds Saracens v Prebbleton at Southbrook
Southern’s Matt McAtamney caused plenty of problems for the Darfield defence on Saturday. the posts to grab his side the lead, and ultimately success. While they’ll be frustrated again by their performance, Southern are showing one great trait, and that’s an ability to win from difficult positions, and they’ll look to take that confidence into their semi-final this week against Glenmark Cheviot, who surprisingly smashed Southbridge, which means Southern are again at home this weekend. At Keenan’s Road, it wasn’t long before the respective strengths of the two sides revealed themselves, as Celtic and Prebbleton fought out a knockout quarter-final on Saturday. As long as the visitors kept it tight, they had the upper hand; as soon as the home side gave the ball some air, holes were punched, and mayhem threatened. It took just ten minutes for that scenario to produce a result, with a Celtic backline foray breaking the defensive line, and fullback Cam Butler, who once again had a fine game all around the paddock, found himself in a big gap, and took full advantage. Elyh McKibbin added the extras, but before the home side had time to celebrate, Prebbleton hit back, getting into the Celtic 22 and using their big forwards in multiple close-quarter charges, and eventually the pressure was too much, a converted try drawing the scores level. Celtic’s lineout, so often such a well-oiled machine, wasn’t quite on song, but they did manage a lineout steal in the blue half, and resultant pressure led to a goal-line dropout. With Isireli Masiwini again creating the
breakthrough, Celtic should have scored, but a dropped ball proved costly, one of several errors that crept into their game. A disagreement with the referee resulted in the greens being marched ten metres, letting Prebbleton further off the hook. Around the half-hour mark the Celtic attack did get it right again, and Masiwini this time carried on himself, all the way to the line, with McKibbin again converting. But again, Prebbleton came back with a carbon copy attack, multiple phases of mostly oneoff runners, and despite throwing themselves into desperate tackling, Celtic couldn’t hold out. With an easy conversion, that was it for the first half, and also the end of the game’s try-scoring. The second half saw much of the same; Celtic giving themselves plenty of chances with
Masiwini and Raitube Vasurakuta breaking first tackles at will, and Nixon Brown outside them eager to run with the ball, but the finishing touches – mostly due to errors – had deserted them. The visitors, meanwhile, stayed in the game, and with their scrum shadowing the home side’s unit all day, they had enough possession to do just that. When a penalty came their way 40 metres out, their sharpshooting 10 Ted Coleman took it. When another one came five minutes later in the same spot, he took that one too, and the home side was suddenly chasing the game. Vasurakuta made a good run down the sideline, but when he was finally brought down the ref saw something in the tackle that prompted a yellow card, and a further three-pointer for the blues (and a long discussion post-

game between a Celtic coach and the ref). As happens with many teams, being a man down spurs the rest into action, and the green machine sputtered back into life; the lineout was back to its best, and half-gaps were being created across the park, but all they had to show for it was a McKibbin penalty. When Prebbleton swept back onto attack, a kick deep into the Celtic 22 led to a double-fumble mix-up, and an offside man picked up the ball, presenting Coleman with an easy penalty from right in front to wrap it all up. Southern 23 (Matt McAtamney, Thomas McCormick 2 tries; Thomas Middleton 2 pen, conv) beat Darfield 20. Celtic 17 (Cam Butler, Isireli Masiwini tries; Elyn McKibbin pen, 2 conv.) lost to Prebbleton 26.

Mt Somers, Hampstead and Methven were the big movers in the first round of Senior B rugby’s Centennial Mug over the long weekend. The Mount lads were impressive beating Southern 585, while Hampstead eked out a similar result to beat Celtic 52-22. Methven worked a little harder but got the job done with a 38-19 win over Collegiate in the Paul Williams Memorial Trophy match on Thursday night, and Rakaia came out on the right side of a close match against Allenton winning 17-14.

Things were a little fresh on the Ashburton Domain on Saturday morning as Mainland Football competitions continued over the long weekend. Roving photographer Doug Bovett captured this snap at the Mid Canterbury United 15th Grade clash against Waimak United during the early hours of the morning. The Mid Canterbury lads went on to win the match 2-1 in what was another good day for the club across the board. The Seniors fought out a narrow loss against Burwood, going down 1-2. They also stepped out yesterday to play Halswell. The reserves side continued their great run with a 3-0 win over Western AFC. Mid Canterbury United’s 17th grade team were also in good form with a strong 4-1 win over Halswell while the 13th grade team also grabbed success, beating Selwyn 3-2. PHOTO DOUG BOVETT
Locals go close at South Island champs Matt Markham Ashburton indoor bowlers have made their presence felt over the first two days of the South Island Indoor Bowls Championships in Invercargill. The three-day event was set to wrap up last night with the completion of the triples champion-
ship, but irrelevant of the results in that discipline it’s been a successful weekend for the Ashburton flag flyers, without any actual success. The championships began with the pairs on Saturday and three local players were in among the action. Michael Lawson, playing with South Otago’s Stephen Preddy, Jeremy Markham playing with Waikato’s David Archer and Mat Bassett playing with Otago’s Nick Sinclair all made it
to the post-section stage of the event. Lawson was knocked out in the first round of qualifying but both Bassett and Markham worked through to the last eight where they met in the quarter final. Basset was successful there, advancing to the semi-final before he was knocked out – finishing third equal. On Sunday, in the fours event, Lawson teamed up with Preddy and Willowby’s Ken and Rowena
Mackenzie and they nearly went all the way, making their way into the final before fighting out an epic clash to lose on the last end. Russell Ellis, playing in a composite team from Canterbury, was a beaten semi-finalist while Bassett, also in a composite team, made it through to the last 16. The triples were set to go right into the evening last night with a number of local players among the action.
The Ashburton Barbarian Rugby league side came close to a Queen’s Birthday victory, but ultimately had to settle for second best in their clash against the Linwood Keas on Saturday. A strong first half from the Ashburton side had them right in the hunt as they went into the sheds up 22-12 and looking good. Linwood really turned it on early in the second half though, scoring 28 unanswered points to go from down by eight to up 40-22 with 10 minutes to play. Two late BaaBaa tries put them a little closer, but the margin was too big. After six rounds they are just four points outside of the top four with the Keas the competition leaders. This week they’ll play the Eastern Eagles at Robilliard Park.
Saspford a busy boy Mid Canterbury product, Ollie Sapsford was prominent during the Brumbies Super Rugby quarterfinal win against the Hurricanes on Saturday night. The former Mid Canterbury rep, came off the bench twice during the match playing a big part in the second half for his side where he was busy on both attack and defence as the Brumbies came from behind to beat the Canes 35-25 in Canberra.
Croquet braving the temperatures Matt Markham The Waireka Croquet Club is getting out and enjoying the good weather while it still can. In traditional circumstances, the croquet season would have been completed at the end of April – but a decision was made as the winter months approach to continue to play when they still can, and on Sunday, they welcomed the Hornby Club along to Ashburton for singles matches. It continued a line of days where they’ve invited other clubs along who are also still playing for challenges. While the temperature levels dropped rather low across the court on Sunday, it didn’t deter the enthusiasm. The singles match-ups were played across two blocks with a tight encounter in Block A with both sides picking up eight wins each, with Waireka using their local knowledge to win the overall tie on hoops, grabbing 84 to Hornby’s 79. In Block B it was the visitors who shone. They picked up nine wins to Waireka’s seven and also claimed 97 hoops to their hosts 74. With the doubles played on a previous date, the combined scores between both days saw Hornby victors in the challenge and taking home the trophy with 26 wins to Waireka’s 18.
