The signs of times gone by Daniel Alvey Exploring Ashburton’s CBD history will now be easier after the unveiling of plaques on East Street. The signs show off the history of each street they look down, which included Burnett, Tancred, Moore and Havelock streets. They were unveiled by Ashburton District Council Mayor Neil Brown to council members, invited guests and the community. “They are great displays for showing off the history of the town,’’ Brown said. “A lot of people have come together with all the knowledge (to make it happen).’’ One of those was Ashburton Museum archives officer Connor Lysaght, who has been in-
volved in the project for the past year, seeing it through from early planning phase to the completion. “It’s been a really good project to be involved with,” Lysaght said. The plaques are a collaborative history project involving the council, Historic Places Mid Canterbury, Ashburton Museum and the Historical Society and people representing the community. The Burnett Street panel even explores some of the Ashburton Guardian’s beginnings in the heart of the town. Information on the signs would rotate every six months to keep the information on each panel fresh. Each sign has a QR code, which would take the reader to a site where they could learn more about the particular area the sign was in. “The information on the website is a supplement to what is on the sign,” Lysaght said.

Mt Hutt’s ski area boss doesn’t think the business will be hit hard commercially because they’ve missed their season opening date for the first time in a decade. The opening was supposed to be tomorrow, but Mt Hutt ski area manager James McKenzie admitted the delay because of a lack of snow was not a major concern. He said the season opening was strategically planned so that the skifield had a few
weeks to get up and running before school holiday arrivals from New Zealand and Australia. “Most of the programmes don’t start for a couple of weeks,’’ he said. “Most of the people that come up for opening weekend are generally recreational skiers and riders that are just coming up for the day and haven’t locked anything in.” Unseasonably warm weather meant the team on the skifield was not able to build a snow base prior to its scheduled opening tomorrow – and that’s something that hasn’t happened since 2011. Fortunately, about 100cm of snow was forecast to arrive over the weekend.
MetService meteorologist Gerard Bellam said the weather coming for the South Island would hang around for a few days, rather than passing through quickly. “We have this big moist northwest flow and it is going to get progressively colder as we go through the week,’’ he said. “That means the freezing levels will drop so you will have rain, but it will fall into quite cold air meaning it will basically be snow.” For now, the team at Mt Hutt will be doing their snow dances. “We’ll be making a plan on Tuesday about our plans. We can pretty much open the next day after a good storm has passed through,” McKenzie said.

Mum, daughter team just clicks Daryl Holden It’s hard to know who gets more excited at seeing her photos on the TV news weather segment – lens-waving Hayley Lovett or pre-school daughter Zoe. Either way, the buzz is understandable for all the Lovett family, who live on a lifestyle block just north of Ashburton. Last week, excitement levels were again high when Hayley had her third photo displayed as a backdrop to the weather during the 1News 6pm bulletin. Members of the public are encouraged to email weather or landscape photos to appear on the tele when the weather news is covered, with Hayley being a bit of a master at it. Her latest shot captured one of those magical sunrises towards Mt Hutt. “But you only find out at the
time the weather is on (if your photo has been chosen) so I am always watching TV to see,’’ Hayley said. “I’ve got a four-year-old daughter and she loves me to let her know if it is on the TV. I go back and show her, and she gets really excited. “And in the mornings, she’ll open the curtains and will say: ‘the sun’s rising, Mum’. She’s always looking to notice things for me to take photos of.’’ That’s teamwork at its finest and part of a love for photography, which really only hit Hayley when they moved to their lifestyle block in April last year. Suddenly, she noticed the spectacular views, sunrises, plus bird and animal life that could all make great photos. “So, I bought a proper camera and now I take photos regularly. “I put them on my Instagram page, plus my Facebook page where everyone can see them.’’ And her fun hobby will soon bloom into a little sideline earner.
Hayley plans to establish a photography business where she hopes to sell bigger prints, calendars and the like. And the name of the business? Through the Hedges, which points directly to her photo-shooting domain. “I take photos through the gaps in the hedge at home and I get sunrise photos through there. That’s why I call my business, Through the Hedges.’’ A clever name to match a photographer with a good eye and ably supported by a young helper at the ready. “I just get quite excited when I see something that could make a good photo, especially sunrises. I really enjoy it.’’

Law change gives hope to speed reduction petitioners Jonathan Leask Ashburton Deputy Mayor Liz McMillan’s campaign for a road speed reduction at a Methven danger spot is a small step closer. McMillan, desperate to have the speed limit on a portion of State Highway 77 just north of Methven reduced from 100kph to a safer 50kph, hopes the change could now happen sooner because of a new law. The introduction of a new Setting of Speed Limits law in May allowed for reductions to be considered at a regional level. That’s encouraging news for McMillan, who in February presented a petition to Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to make the change. They originally told her the soonest they could do it was 2024, which frustrated McMillan, who felt the area was now an accident waiting to happen with increased traffic in the $15 million Opuke hot pools complex, alongside two subdivisions. “It would be great if it could happen in six months’ time,’’ McMillan said. “I doubt it will happen that fast but it could now happen sooner than 2024. “Any decisions are still out of our hands.” Waka Kotahi director regional relationships, James Caygill, said a change was a possibility with the new law, but there was “still work to be done”. Then it would move to a threeyearly cycle of producing a new speed management plan for the regional network.
McMillan asked if the changes meant Methven’s SH77 request would now fit into the interim plan, or if they would still have to wait until 2024. Caygill was unable to give her a firm answer.
“I don’t have clarity on what that interim plan looks like yet,” he said. “We will do our very best to keep the community concerns in mind.”

Wakanui School students have Waitangi in their sights, but it’ll take some fundraising to get there. Year 7 and 8 students need to raise a total of $4000 to cover flights to get to Waitangi in the Bay of Islands for their biennial school camp at the end of the year. They weren’t able to get there last year due to Covid-19, so the students and staff are determined to make it in 2022. “The trip will be between November and December,” said head student Gus. Gus and fellow head stu-
dent Callum are looking forward to visiting Waitangi and learning more about New Zealand’s history. But a big increase in the group’s cost of flights – from $3000 to $4000 – has forced them into fundraising overdrive. So far the school has hosted a movie night and are planning on having another later in the year. They also have a school disco planned for term three. Their main source of money should come from a car boot sale on school grounds on Sunday from 10am to 1pm if fine. There will be everything from plants, designer second-hand clothing, raffles, a silent auction and food stalls. Just make sure you bring cash, as there will be no eftpos.

Historical snippets grab attention New rules
limit fatberg potential
Did you know that Burnett Street was once the “Fleet Street” of Ashburton where newspapers and printers plied their trade? Or that Tancred Street was the entertainment part of town?
Ashburton District residents are being thanked for confining their flushing to just the three Ps - pee, poo and toilet paper.
Snippets of Ashburton’s colourful past have been brought to life on history panels unveiled for the public this week.
Flushing anything else, like baby wipes or wet wipes, has the potential to cause blockages that are expensive to clear, and now there are new rules in New Zealand and Australia that set standards for what can and cannot be flushed.
The panels are a joint project involving the Ashburton District Council, Historic Places Mid Canterbury, the Ashburton Museum and Historical Society and others representing the community. Mayor Neil Brown said it was a great collaboration that ensured some of the district’s history was on permanent show. The four history panels are on East Street, one opposite the clock tower and the others at the intersections of Burnett, Tancred and Moore Streets. They have been designed to capture the attention of pedestrians. Ashburton Museum and Historical Society president Glenn Vallender said the organisation had collected the town’s history for decades and was pleased to see some of it on display this way. He said Baring Square East development had been led by construction of the railway in 1874 and the town had many stories to tell. Each panel also has a QR code that connects to the Ashburton Museum’s online materials page. The panel at East and Burnett Street talks about Burnett Street’s base for newspapers. The town’s first paper was the Ashburton Mail, which started in 1877;
Council Infrastructure Services Group Manager Neil McCann said that unlike other councils, Ashburton generally had few issues with non-flushables causing blockages. Helping put our history on show (from left) Dave Stewart, Connor Lysaght, Danielle Campbell, Glenn Vallender, Diane Rawlinson and Mayor Neil Brown.
the street is still home to the town’s news media. Tancred Street was once home to a general store, two boarding houses and a restaurant, while Moore Street was where the Wakanui Road Board and other early forms of local government did business. Council Community Services Group Manager Steve Fabish said the Heritage Mid Canterbury working group that decided on the final content for the signs spent a lot of time discussing stories that would capture interest. “Hopefully everyone who walks past these signs will stop and learn something about their town. We hope many will scan the QR
code and discover even more. “This has been a great collaborative project and many people have given their expertise, which we really appreciated.” Those at the unveiling received a special guided tour of the panels yesterday, with commentary from the museum's Connor Lysaght; he described a fire that raged on the block between Burnett Street and Tancred Street in 1892 and a tornado that ripped through Tancred Street in 1903. There are plans to produce four more panels that can be exchanged on a regular basis, to keep up interest. The panels are fixed onto frames made by the Ashburton MenzShed.
“But wipes and other non-flushables can be a major cause of blockages in pipes and contribute to things like fatbergs and environmental pollution through sewage overflows. “The new rules mean manufacturers now have to label items that can be flushed and it will be an offence to label a product flushable if it does not meet the new standard.” He said Council continued to urge people not to flush anything other than the three Ps. “If there’s no flushable symbol on the packet then don’t flush it, bin it. "When we have blockages, we can isolate an area and send letters to households about what they can or can’t flush.” Mr McCann said this was the case recently when nappies were being flushed.

Healthy water for all is the ultimate goal
1
A newspaper article written in 1881 formed part of our background reading for a Council meeting item recently on the future of the Pudding Hill stockwater intake.
But to meet present-day regulations, this water take from the Ashburton River system has to be fish screened, at a cost of between $300,000 and $600,000. This cost would have to be paid by the 181 ratepayers whose property the race system runs through.
The story told how County Councillors of the day travelled three hours by train and then in horse drawn carts to the Pudding Hill stream, where a dam had been built across the river to supply a new network of races that would take vital water down the plains.
This might not be much of a cost to some. But let us remember that the majority of the area serviced by this intake now has alternative water, and those properties without alternatives could very easily be supplied with some minor alterations to present systems.
Officially opening the supply, County Council chairman W. C. Walker said it was important work and one which would confer a benefit on the land through which the water intended to flow.
Over the years, why have people that can, moved away from the system opened in 1881 with much fanfare? The main reason is people want to drink and wash themselves in the cleanest and healthiest water possible.
Some 141 years on this intake is still running.
As a young person I drank water sourced from the house roof. Every so
Thursday, 9 June 2022 | ISSUE 82
often my father would climb into the drinking water tank to clean out the bird dirt that had been washed in during heavy rains and when it did not rain for a while the water race water was pumped in and allowed to settle for a day or so before we started drinking again. At bath time one would know exactly what color the water race was. My father went to great expense to connect all the shed roofs into a large concrete underground tank that allowed the family to drink and wash in much cleaner water - yes, the bird dirt was cleaned manually from the tank when it was low enough. I can clearly remember with great celebration in the early 1980s when a new council piped scheme arrived on our property and finally we had clean, healthy water.
What I find very interesting today is the cleanliness of the water required for stock to drink and to wash dairy sheds and vegetables before they go off the market. People also rightly demand the best water quality. For many years people in Ashburton have wanted more water in the river and for many years I have argued that water-takes like Pudding Hill should be closed. It is well recognised that less than 10% of the water taken is used for its intended purpose. Maybe the cost of installing a fish screen will ultimately relegate the old intake to history and some people will end up with cleaner water as a result. ashburtondc.govt.nz

Recyclers help kickboxer's trip to Ireland If you’ve recycled a chest of drawers or a bicycle at the Ashburton Resource Recovery Park’s re-use shop recently, then chances are you have helped Ashburton man Ford Gerbes get to the world kickboxing champs in Ireland later this year.
Annual Plan deliberations, Wednesday 15 June, 9am (livestreamed) Council meeting, Wednesday 15 June, 1pm (live-streamed) Council Activity Briefings, Wednesday 22 June, 9.30am Audit and Risk Committee, Wednesday 22 June, 1.30pm (livestreamed)
It is the first of three $2000 donations the re-use shop plans to make to good causes this year.
Ford’s name was put forward for consideration as a recipient after his selection and fundraising efforts were highlighted in the Ashburton Courier community newspaper. He said he was delighted to accept the money, which was a big boost to his fundraising account.
Meetings are at Council Chambers, 137 Havelock Street, unless specified Methven Community Board, Monday 13 June, 10.30am at Mt Hutt Memorial Hall
Ford needs to raise $6400 for his trip with the New Zealand kickboxing team, and was recently donated $2000 from the re-use shop, which is operated by EnviroWaste Services Limited as part of its solid waste management contract with the Ashburton District Council.
Items that are brought into the re-use shop for recycling are sold to the public; items include household furnishings and wares like glasses and mugs which are still in good condition. There are also bicycles, sports equipment and coats.
UPCOMING MEETINGS
Ashburton Water Zone Committee, Tuesday 28 June, field trip ADC's Justin Bloomfield (left) with Ford Gerbes and EnviroWaste's Glen Sole.
Ford rises most days at 3.30am to train before going to work; he trains again later in the day, after spending time with his family. He competes in regular events.
Ford said his own gym work prepared his body for the lateral and explosive movements needed for the sport, which was also about mental toughness.
As well as kickboxing, he competes in mixed martial arts, boxing and mauy thai, which is often referred to as Thai boxing.
He has been doing kickboxing for 11 years and considers himself lucky to be able to compete, especially after surviving a serious car crash.
He also set up a Fight-Fit Fitness gym at the Hampstead Rugby Club grounds two years ago, offering basic fighting drills and circuit fitness training for others. Recently he has started a class for juniors.
People interested in applying for a donation should inquire at the re-use shop at the Ashburton Resource Recovery Park.

OUR VIEW
Idiosyncrasies of the English language P
eople often can be found complaining that the English language is failing miserably under the power of technology, adolescent crazes and sharply declining, loose use of grammar. We all use it. Every day. But the foundations on what the language was built on was frayed and confuddling long before any boomers or Gen Zs came along and started shortening words, speaking in tongues and creating new phrases for everyday use. But the argument could be that the English language has long had its perils. Much longer than most of us have been using it too. And it’s even worse when written down. Don’t believe me? Here’s an example.
Matt Markham The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert. Three variations of one word, in one sentence. All largely the same, but with very different meanings. Still not convinced? Here’s another. The farm was cultivated to produce produce. Or, how about this: when shot at, the dove dove into the bushes. Actually, I’ll just keep going. There’s plenty of instances where the English language beggars belief with the use of homonyms and homographs.
■■ The bandage was wound around the wound. ■■ The landfill was so full that the workers had to refuse more refuse. ■■ Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present to his girlfriend.
“
■■ There was a row among those in the boat about who would row. ■■ They were too close to the door to actually close it. ■■ The stag does funny thing when the does are present. ■■ Upon seeing a tear in her painting, the artist shed a tear.
There’s plenty of instances where the English language beggars belief with the use of homonyms and homographs.
■■ A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum. ■■ I did not object to the object he was showing me. ■■ The insurance claim was invalid for the invalid in his hospital bed.
■■ I had to subject the subject to a series of tests. ■■ And how can I intimate this to my most intimate friend. I’d never really thought too much about it until I stumbled across a few examples written
down in front of me and it got me to thinking. Just writing those above made my head hurt, and I’m sure it will have you wondering a little bit more as you read them too. It’s actually quite astounding. If you were to sit back and read them out loud to someone who couldn’t see the written form, they wouldn’t raise an eyebrow, but show it to them in a written form and watch the confusion set in. So, before we ROFL (roll on the floor with languish) about the language that’s used in today’s society, perhaps we need to delve far deeper into history and wonder where it all went wrong to start with. Ideally, I would like to just accept it as being part of life, except I can’t. Oops, there we go again.

Milestone for coaching duo
C
rusaders players and fans have double reason to chase another grand final berth when playing the Chiefs in their DHL Super Rugby Pacific game in Christchurch on Friday. The semi-final will be the 100th Crusaders’ game for the coaching pair of head coach Scott Robertson and forwards’ coach Jason Ryan. Assistant coach Andrew Goodman said it was something neither was likely to mention during the week with all the emphasis on the Friday game. But Goodman said he had ‘so much respect’ for the pair since Robertson had given him his coaching opportunity with the side five years ago. “Over the last few years, they’ve become really good friends. We’ve got an awesome work environment here … but there’s a lot of good social times outside of work as well,” he said. However, the side knows they will go
news around that, but we’ll just have to wait and see,” he said. “We’re gutted he hasn’t got the chance to finish the season off with us. He’s been an integral part [of the campaign]. “We all know how hard he works, he’s a great team man, and always bringing a laugh to the boys,” he said. His absence will be felt in the breakdown contest, something they know will be an area they can expect a challenge from the Chiefs after their games earlier in the season. They also kicked well through halfback Brad Weber and first five-eighths Bryn Gatland and they backed that with powerful ball carriers. “Our physicality will have to be right on,” he said. Tom Christie and Corey Kellow will contest the openside role. “Tom was one of our form players through the start of the season, and he’ll be pretty excited by a potential opportunity to get another run out there in the seven jersey.”
The formidable Crusaders coaching duo, Jason Ryan and Scott Robertson. into the game without the services of loose forward Ethan Blackadder, who left the field during the quarter-final win over the Reds with a shoulder injury. Goodman said the full extent of Blackadder’s injury would be known after he
had more scans, but he was out of action for what remains of the Super Rugby season, and there was a question mark over his participation in next month’s All Blacks series against Ireland. “Everyone’s hoping there’s some good

Mid Canterbury’s horse and dog racing action
Out to be Belle of them all, again Matt Markham Smart Mid Canterbury pacing mare Sweet Belle will be out to make it back-to-back wins tonight at Addington. Now trained out of the Ashburton Racecourse by former Rakaia horseman, Gerard O’Reilly the four-year-old mare made a spectacular return to form last week on the Addington surface with a dour performance to grab victory. That came after a string of frustrating efforts earlier in the year, when the daughter of Sweet Lou looked well out of sorts.

“We were having quite a few seasonal issues with her,” O’Reilly said after last week’s win. “But she seems good now and it’s nice to see her back in a bit of form.” The mare, locally-owned by Richard Ashworth, Martin Hickman, Bryan McGirr and Stuart Ashworth, has now won five of her 24 career starts and picked up close to $55,000 in stake earnings. She’ll look to up those numbers tonight when she steps into a similar grade of race, drawn near enough on the front line. If O’Reilly has one of the race’s biggest chances though, then brother Leo isn’t too far behind with his consistent mare, Maren Franco. Fresh-up last week, she was

seen putting in some stylish work late to finish fourth and she gets the sweet swing in draws from
near the outside of the second-row last week to pole position tonight which brings her
right into contention. The pair are two of three locally trained runners in the race with Raewyn Low lining up the talented Missmollygoodgolly as well with regular pilot, Lawrence McCormick in the sulky. He’ll be looking for race-to-race success tonight with the drive on his father’s trotter, Maui in the race following that of Missmollygoodgolly. The son of Peak was noticed hitting the line strongly in a fresh state at Ashburton on Sunday to finish third and is sure to have taken plenty of benefit from that performance. Off a 10m handicap, he’ll need to make a swift beginning but with any luck looks a leading contender in what is a wide-open trotting affair during the middle stages of the programme.

Courts hive of activity Matt Markham A huge week of netball steps it up again tonight at the EA Networks Centre when Mid Canterbury Netball’s Premier competition get back onto the court for the second week of round two. In a hectic week for netball organisers and administrators, there’s been plenty to whet the appetite over the past seven days, especially if you’re a fan of representative level matches, but the
Makaleta Ula aiming high.
lure of seeing local clubs duking it out on the courts tonight is equally as enticing. Last weekend the EA Networks Centre played host to the Under 16 Tupuranga Championship, which was jointly hosted by Mid Canterbury Netball and Christchurch Netball Centre, with 20 teams from across the mainland in attendance. North Otago, Kaikoura, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast, South Canterbury, Selwyn, Te Waipounamu and Christchurch all sent teams, while included in the line-up were three local sides who took part in the competition, taking on some very strong teams from up the road throughout the course of the weekend. Christchurch Netball Centre A emerged victorious in the A Grade competition, beating North Canterbury Gold in the final, while the B Grade was taken out by Christchurch Netball Centre Black, who beat their clubmates, White, 24-21 in the final. While that was going on here in Ashburton, up in Christchurch the Mid Canterbury Under 18 side took on their first challenge of the season playing in the annual Queen’s Birthday Weekend tournament. The side endured four losses from their four matches, but what happened on the scoreboard was never the main goal for the side as they look to build as a team for the upcoming Under 18 National Championships, which will also be held in Christchurch. Tonight, there’s plenty to play for across all three premier grades as sides jostle for positions early on in the round. The undefeated Celtic still look the team to beat in Premier
1 and they’ll get the chance to test themselves once again, up against the recently promoted Mt Somers side who celebrated their arrival in the top grade with a win over Southern last week. Southern will square off with Hampstead, who were very impressive last week against United in the late game, while Methven will be out to build some momentum in the opening match of the night when they take on United for the second time this season. In Premier 2, plenty of eyes will be on the Ashburton College A team as they look to bounce back from two defeats last week. They were knocked down to Premier 2 in the promotion/relegation match by Mt Somers on Tuesday night and then felt the full force of Rakaia on Thursday night. Tonight, they’re up against
Hampstead B in the first match of the evening in what should be a really intriguing encounter. Two winners from last week’s first night of the round, Methven and Allenton will square off in the middle game – one which could determine how the early standings fall in the grade, while Rakaia, who made a big impression last week, come up against the Celtic B team in the late match. Premier 3 tonight starts with a big match-up between Ashburton College 10A and Methven Shearmac, both of whom won last week and will be out to take a hold of the competition. Hampstead U18 will take on United in the middle match of the night, while Ashburton College B will look to make it two from two after being relegated when they play Methven Humm in the late match.

Dunlea joins Canterbury set-up Matt Markham There’ll be a distinctly Mid Canterbury feel to this season’s Canterbury NPC squad. Former Mid Canterbury representative player and coach, Craig Dunlea, was this week announced as an assistant coach for this year’s NPC campaign alongside head coach Marty Bourke and fellow assistant, Alex Robertson. Former Canterbury player and All Black, Matt Todd, will also join the coaching group. The 46-year-old was a set piece specialist within the team during last year’s campaign, but will fill the role of assistant forwards coach, set to utilise his intimate knowledge of all things scrummaging. “I’m really excited to get an opportunity to be the assistant coach of Canterbury,” he said. “Being involved with the scrum last year gave me a real insight to the expectation and responsibility the role carriers, with the players, supporters and the region. “I’m looking forward to engaging with Marty, Alex and Matt,
and reconnecting with the players.” Dunlea has had a long involvement with the game of rugby, playing for both the Rakaia and Celtic clubs here in Mid Canterbury. He played four seasons for Mid Canterbury first in 1996 and 1997 and then again in 2008 and 2009, with stints both overseas and for Otago and Southland in the NPC between 2004 and 2005. While his playing record is impressive, Dunlea’s time on the sideline as a coach far exceeds that. After coaching at club level here in Mid Canterbury, he then shifted into the Heartland fold and took charge of Mid Canterbury for two years in 2016 and 2017, before heading up the road to join Lincoln University and then onto the Christchurch Football Club. He was a part of the Canterbury B coaching mix as well, and then also the Crusaders Under 20 team. “I always wanted to be involved in the coaching side of things, it gives you a really good insight and I loved it so wanted to see how far I could take it.” Bourke, who will take over the head role this season was an assistant in 2021.
Craig Dunlea was Mid Canterbury coach in 2016 and 2017. He is currently stateside, coaching Rugby New York in America’s Major League Rugby and will link up with his new team following the completion of that competition.
Robertson has a wealth of Canterbury experience behind him being in charge of Canterbury Colts, Darfield, Ellesmere, Canterbury Under 19, Canterbury Bs and the Crusaders Under 20s,
most with Dunlea alongside him. This year’s NPC will begin in August with Canterbury to kick off their campaign against Manawatu in Palmerston North on Friday, August 5.

Continuing the trend, today you’ll get along with people so easily, teaming up to excellent effect. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Review your financial strategy.
