Omicron fear, cases hammer businesses Jonathan Leask

A veteran Ashburton retailer says he’s “flabbergasted’’ at how bad it’s got for local businesses as Covid-19 really started to bite. Bob McDonald, who has owned the Health 2000 shop since 1994, said it was worse than the national lockdown from two years ago, as rising Covid-19 cases impacted businesses right across the Ashburton District. “The town’s empty,” McDonald said. “It’s weird. There is no-one around. “I’m flabbergasted as to how bad it’s got and how quickly.’’ McDonald felt that as soon as the first Omicron case had been confirmed in Ashburton that “people have stayed home”. According to the Canterbury DHB figures, active cases rose to 1233 in the Ashburton District as of 8am Wednesday, with 77 new cases since Tuesday. The rise of Covid cases was hitting businesses and organisations across the district due to staff being positive cases, while consumer fear was resulting in customers avoiding shops. Whether it be staffing issues or a lack of foot traffic, businesses across Ashburton are reducing their operating hours. McDonald said he knew of several businesses that had staff off and others that were reducing hours due to the lack of shoppers. “They have been talking so long about how bad [Covid] is and people getting hospitalised, people are just scared and nervous about going out and catching it,’’ he said. “And we are still waiting for the peak. “This is worse than a lockdown. “At least in a lockdown you knew what was going on.” With a predicted peak in cas-

es three weeks away, McDonald said it was a worrying time for businesses, which may not survive past the peak. Ashburton McDonald’s has had to reduce its hours this week due to staff unavailability, going from operating 24 hours a day to 6am-10pm. The Devon Hotel had to close for a week due to staff absences and isolation requirements. Countdown has also reported having around 1900 team members off work across the country due to Covid, but was unable to provide specific numbers for Ashburton’s two stores.

Foot off the gas pedal Fuel price tips locals over the edge Maddison Gourlay Mid Cantabrians are in disbelief after fuel prices in Ashburton topped a record high $3 a litre mark for unleaded 91. That $3 a litre pump price was recorded at nine petrol stations around Mid Canterbury yesterday, with six coming in just under that figure. Unleaded 91 surpassed $3 a litre in Auckland and Wellington last week. Supply uncertainty overseas, especially as major oil producer Russia invaded the Ukraine, seemed to be partly to blame for rising prices, which Ashburton mother Cindy Wilkins said was impacting on their total family life. And it meant sacrifices had to be made. “(We’re) pretty much stuck at home now. (It costs) $16.50 just to get to town and then home, $42 in fuel running my kids to the bus stop each week,” Wilkins said “(There would be) no sports this winter because we can’t afford to get them there.”

Wilkins and her family live on a farm in Lowcliffe, which is tucked in between the Rangitata and Hinds River mouth. Sending her kids to Geraldine High School meant having to drop them off at a bus stop 7.8km from home. That, alone, cost Wilkins nearly $50 a week. Wilkins said the cost of fuel had also affected other areas of their spending, such as groceries because it was now cheaper to get them delivered. “We are one income due to me home schooling one of my children. At the moment we can pinch (and scrape), but I don’t know how much further we can stretch,” she said. “We aren’t currently struggling, but if we didn’t produce our milk, meat, and veges we could be.” Wilkins said that no-one was alone in their worries, with the potential further rise of fuel prices. “I don’t see it going down much any time soon,” she said. Some Guardian supporters even believed driving to and from work might not be feasible with the high price of fuel. “I can’t afford to drive to work to earn money to pay the petrol to drive to work,” Becca Black said on the Guardian’s Facebook page.

PETROL PRICE PAIN Maureen Weavers – When I drove home today in Hornby 2 service stations advertising fuel over $3 a litre on Sunday evening it was $2.95.9 for 91. Talking with friends in Australia last night & they were going ballistic about their prices. Nothing like ours though, but yes high for them. Jackie Cooper – Ashburton fuel prices are the dearest around, cheaper through Mackenzie Country and further down south. Camille Donnelly – It means we won’t be going anywhere or seeing anyone outside of the groceries once a week. When you live rurally and all your

Mid Cantabrians are having to cope with seemingly unstoppable petrol price increases. Unleaded 91 has topped $3 a litre in the district. What impact has the fuel price increase had on you and your daily dealings? The following comments were left on our Facebook page. family and friends are a minimum of an hour away mostly it means being more isolated than ever. Add the fuel costs to groceries rising every week and we have a serious problem, I actually don’t know how low income families are even eating these days . . . It’s very

frightening. Charlene Bryant –- I drive from client to client every day for work costing me $150 each time I fill up, it really is starting to hurt the pocket. Vanessa Sinclair – Z is $3.09 today! It’s ridiculous. Kylie Flanagan – It’s not even

worth working a part time job now as petrol and tax takes your income. Gemma May Huggins - Taking my child to appointments in Christchurch means I need warning in advance so we can budget for the extra fuel. Eloise Hall – No money to spend

on going out for dinner. Used to go out twice or so a month. Haven’t gone out in ages for dinner. Cuts into your expendable income. Patrick Moore – In the good old days, families would go on a Sunday drive, now most can barely afford to stay at home. Tyler Winter – $160 doesn’t even fill my Ute anymore. Nigel Duncan – I now bike as much as I can. Melissa Smillie – Going to be cheaper for me not to work soon. Shaun Wornall – People laughed cause I drove a Colt for a daily, well I’m grinning now.

Local off to Poland to help Ukrainian refugees Left – Krzysztof Matejczyk, Shane Quigley, Anna Matejczyk.

Maddison Gourlay Ashburton’s Beata Matejczyk is overwhelmed by community support to help Ukrainian refugees forced to flee their under attack homeland. Matejczyk is heading to Poland on Sunday to help her parents, who own accommodation in the small village of Zarzecze, four hours west of the Ukrainian border. On Tuesday, United Nations’ high commissioner for refugees, Filippo Grandi, said over two million people had fled Ukraine because of Russia’s military invasion. Matejczyk’s parents, Krzysztof Matejczyk and Anna Matejczyk, own the holiday accommodation on Lake Zywieckie. They’re helping nine refugees by providing free accommodation and they were expecting to help even more in the coming weeks. “Everyone in Poland is helping Ukrainian refugees,” Beata Matejczyk said. “I was on the phone to my mother, asking what it is people need and a lady has written down underwear. “People have packed their lives into a shopping bag. They just did what they could to leave as quickly as possible.” Matejczyk said it was her fiancé Shane Quigley, who came up with the idea to set up a Givealittle fundraising page to provide accommodation, food, and other necessities. “They are currently hosting a family of five and two other ladies,” she said.

“The ladies arrived at midnight thanks to a volunteer, who drove them from the border. He then went to work at 6am.’’ She said everyone was doing what they could to help. “They have left their lives behind and all they want to do is go home and many of them will have to start all over again. Thanks to community support, Matejczyk and Quigley have raised over $3000 and ongoing donations would go directly to helping Ukrainian refugees. “Thank you to everyone who has helped. It’s overwhelming,” Matejczyk said.

CDHB teetering at patient capacity with Covid peak approaching Jonathan Leask Canterbury’s DHB is already teetering on patient capacity three weeks away from an expected peak of Covid cases – and it’s uncertain what that could mean for Ashburton. Data shows CDHB wards in its various hospitals hit full capacity at the end of February and well before the current surge in cases, which are forecast to increase in the next few weeks. But the CDHB insists it has additional capacity to call upon by reducing other services and redeploying staff.

The Canterbury DHB’s response to rising Covid cases may see some services further reduced and staff redeployed at Ashburton Hospital. PHOTO MADDISON GOURLAY

The CDHB talked through its Covid peak plan during its annual review with the health select

committee on Wednesday. Chief executive Peter Bramley said there had been over 2000 new

cases in the region in the previous 24 hours, taking the number of active cases past 12,000, and only 18 inpatients are Covid cases. He said there was around 400 CDHB staff impacted – including around 150 positive cases. “We, from our modelling, believe we are about three weeks away from the peak,” he said. “The big challenge is supporting the health system as a whole. “The challenge in the next three or so weeks is going to be particularly around staff absences.” Canterbury incident controller Tracey Maisey said the CDHB was in stage two of its planning where it was consolidating services in preparation for the peak. “We’ve combined wards, particularly in our non-acute facilities, both (in) Ashburton and

Burwood, and proactively relocated some residents from our rural facilities to enable some staff to be redeployed.” Maisey said once they reduced some surgery services and other deferrable care, potentially next week, they would be redeploying staff to open those remaining beds. In the Ashburton District, people who test positive to Covid-19, and who need hospital-level care, would be admitted to Ashburton Hospital. But if their care needs escalated then they would be transferred to Christchurch Hospital.

Financial lift for district’s foodbanks Foodbanks and food cupboards will be replenished in Ashburton District resulting from funding from the Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury. Just over $20,000 has been allocated to the Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul in Ashburton and St Mark’s Church, Rakaia. In all, the community trust is providing nearly $125,000 for food distribution throughout Canterbury. Trustees decided unanimously the special round of funding, now in its third year, will continue for another three years at least. The trust supports 11 organisations across the region, who use it to top up food parcels from donated and rescued food. The Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul each received $10,000 and St Mark’s $1500. Corps Officer, Elizabeth Walker-Ratu, said, over the past 12 months, the Salvation Army has seen its clients continue to struggle with financial insecurities as well as the growing cost of food. “This grant has helped us improve our basic food parcels to suit a variety of families,” she said. “We’ve been able to include the more expensive items like cleaning products, toiletries and nappies which takes the pressure off families and gives them the breathing space to get back on their feet.” The community trust has been informed by numerous foodbanks, it’s a common misconception that only homeless or unemployed people require food relief. “Many of the recipients are employed individuals and families managing low incomes or those facing short term economic crises such as job loss or unexpect-

ed medical or maintenance bills,” chairman, Nathan Mills, said. “The face of hunger across New Zealand is diverse and Covid-19 has seen a new group of individuals facing poverty for the first time, without the knowledge of relief agencies and support services.”

The face of hunger across New Zealand is diverse and Covid-19 has seen a new group of individuals facing poverty for the first time, without the knowledge of relief agencies and support services.

Foodbank Canterbury, which received $40,000, collects nutritious surplus food from all segments of the food industry including restaurants, grocers, supermarkets, wholesalers, hotels and caterers for distribution to agencies that provide meals to those in need, reducing their annual grocery bills. Based in Christchurch, Foodbank Canterbury distributes to agencies across the region including the Salvation Army in Ashburton and Timaru. The community trust uses the returns from investment to fund its philanthropy and is interested in hearing from other foodbanks or food cupboards in its region, especially those in rural areas.

The changing face of urban Ashburton Rarely-seen artworks, including models, paintings and old aerial photographs tell a story of the changing face of Ashburton in a new exhibition at the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum.

Thursday, 10 March 2022 | ISSUE 69

Masks, RATs should be in rubbish bins

Urban Ashburton opened on Sunday and is expected to revive many memories. The exhibition includes works of local artists like Henry Lowen-Smith and Kath von Tunzelmann, as well as wooden models of the clock tower and some historic panoramic and aerial photos of Ashburton. Objects like cups and saucers that feature Ashburton landmarks also help tell the story of Ashburton’s built environment over the years. The exhibition includes items from the gallery, museum and Ashburton District Council collections and was inspired by recent big changes in the urban environment – the revitalisation of the central business district, the building of the new library and civic building, the planned relocation of the rail container terminal and new businesses on South Street. From its beginnings in 1858 as a humble ferry crossing with only an accommodation house and stables, Ashburton’s urban fabric has expanded outward across the plains from the Hakatere/Ashburton River. Grand old buildings such as the Borough Council Chambers, the former post office with its clock tower, and the St James Theatre have long since disappeared, while other beloved heritage survives in landmarks such as the War Memorial in

Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum director Shirin Khosraviani said some works in the exhibition depict buildings that have been replaced by their more modern counterparts on the same site, such as the post office and the council chambers.

She said Urban Ashburton will appeal to visitors interested in Ashburton’s history – both residents and those visiting the area.

"Others capture urban scenes at a particular point in time, like the historical aerial photographs by White’s Aviation of Ashburton as it appeared from above in the middle of last century. Then there are those that depict enduring aspects of

"It may revive memories of lost aspects of the town, as well as depicting familiar scenes seen in a new light. This exhibition also allows access to rarely seen artworks, curated together from the three collections." It will run until Sunday 3 April. The gallery will be open from 10am to 4pm daily, and until 7pm on Wednesdays. Admission is free.

Information age consultation How Councils consult with their communities has changed a lot over the years. At Ashburton District Council today, staff are planning meetings with the community for the upcoming Annual Plan, and they will be a mixture of in-person gatherings (appropriately physically distanced) and online gatherings (where anyone with access to a digital device can join in). Back in the day, interested residents and ratepayers were encouraged to attend a public meeting at the local hall to hear details of what Council planned to do in the coming year, which could range from putting in new drinking water pipes to building a new library. In today’s world, people have so much more access to information via the internet, that they can instantly find out about Council news and work programmes without stepping outside. If the covid-19 pandemic has done one good thing, it is that it has dragged 1

Finished with your disposable face mask or rapid antigen test? Put them in the rubbish bin as neither can be recycled. Ashburton District Council staff have noticed disposable masks being discarded in yellow recycling bins, and there's concern that rapid antigen tests (RATs) may also be incorrectly regarded as recyclable because they have plastic components. Council Infrastructure Services Group Manager Neil McCann said there is only one place for disposable face masks, used RATs, disposable gloves, tissues and other personal protection items, and that is in a rubbish bin or red wheelie bin. “We don’t want disposable face masks nor RATs contaminating our recycling, which can result in loads being rejected and taken to landfill. "Our kerbside refuse collection contractor has noticed an increased number of disposable masks being put into recycling, alongside other common incorrect items such as disposable nappies. “We have also noticed an increase in masks littering our footpaths and reserves, which is disappointing to see.”

nearly all of us into the digital era of online meetings or family chats. That experience over the past two years means the Council has had to ensure that our community can connect with us online just as well as they can in person. Virtual meetings won’t ever completely replace in-person events of course, but it adds another way in which residents can learn about and have input into the Council’s plans for the 2022-23 financial year. When it comes to giving feedback, we will also retain a range of options for people to tell us what they think, from paper forms to online submissions, or face-to-face at our community meetings. So as we approach consultation for the Annual Plan, we encourage people to take part in the format most comfortable for them and think about questions they might like to ask. The draft annual plan is expected to go

before Council on 6 April, and be out for consultation from the very next day until 6 May. During that time we’ll have all the information available on our website, interactive virtual meetings and a public drop-in session. We’ll be asking for the community’s thoughts on our priorities as we navigate a tricky year with inflationary pressures, supply chain troubles and increased Government regulations around water and the environment. After the consultation period, Council will carefully consider all of the feedback, make any necessary revisions and look to finalise the plan in June.

Other popular authors in the adult library were James Patterson, Nora Roberts and Lesley Pearce. Lucinda Riley’s Seven Sisters books are the most popular series. Library manager Jill Watson said any books on politicians were also popular with borrowers. Books about our own Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, former National Party leader Judith Collins and former US president Donald Trump were among the most checked-out non-fiction items. The automatic sorting machine at the recycling factory can't pick up lids, they're just too thin or too small. So please keep lids of all shapes and sizes, and all materials, out of your yellow recycling bin.

If your yellow bin was tagged and not emptied, that means it contained items that can't be recycled. You need to remove the items indicated on the tag and put your bin out for collection again in two weeks.

The best kept secret in town Malcolm Hopwood Barry Vessey will hold a small celebration next week that will almost go unnoticed. In the middle of Covid, he wants to mark the 21st anniversary of the Ashburton Seniors Centre on March 16. It’ll be a small ceremony which will honour the vision of the late Eric Drewitt, secretary treasurer of the Seniors Centre’s Trust and chairman, Geoff Geering, who were the inspiration behind its building. He might walk outside and view the work of Ashburton Lions who are planting star jasmines along the frontage this weekend. The main celebration will take place when New Zealand is safe and Omicron is over. Vessey, as present trust chairman, isn’t certain when it will happen, but it’s likely to involve a luncheon where a cross section of users will be invited. However, he believes there’s a lot to celebrate. “The building has passed all expectations,” he said. “It’s used by a broad spectrum of senior groups and the wider community.” He’s proud of the way organisations such as Age Concern, Ashburton 206 Club, Ashburton Hearing Association, ethnic groups, service clubs and church groups have used the building over the years, but his challenge is to extend its availability to the wider community. “It’s not just for seniors, it’s for everyone,” he said. Vessey points to the centre’s main hall that seats 150, a smaller lounge, kitchen, three offices and a shared reception. “The building is central, modern, functional and in tip-top condition,” he said. However, he acknowledges there’s a lot of hall space around Ashburton but believes the centre’s competitive rates are the best in town.

Above – Barry Vessey outside the Seniors Centre, which celebrates its 21st anniversary next week. Right – Barry Vessey checks out the Seniors Centre’s noticeboard, which also contains a history of its 21 years in action. Vessey replaces the late Russell Anstiss as chairman and has served for the last 18 months. He’s a man with community service in his DNA and firmly believes in the maxim of legendary Ashburton resident, Bob Elliot, who said “community service is the price you pay for living in it”. “It takes a lot of my time but I’m quite passionate about it,” he said.

DHB supports RAT testing by pharmacies The Canterbury DHB is seeking to clarify whether Ashburton pharmacies can administer rapid antigen tests (RATS). At present pharmacies are limited to providing supervised RAT tests for unvaccinated patients either travelling domestically or entering the court system. Pharmacies aren’t established as distribution sites but the DHB has registered “an expression of interest” on their behalf. RATs are now available at all Canterbury community testing centres and at some GP practices in Ashburton District for people who are symptomatic, household contacts or have asked to be tested by a Medical Officer of Health. Canterbury DHB’s Incident Controller, Tracey Maisey, said testing teams or general practice will determine which test (PCR or RAT) is best for people and will provide advice if RAT tests need to be supervised or unsupervised and what to do if they are positive. The RAT collection site in Ashburton is the Covid-19 Testing Centre, 48 South Street, entrance off Cass Street. It’s open seven days a week from 9.30am to 2.30pm.

OUR VIEW

Let’s keep Mid Canty ticking . . . W

e’re told often, especially in these times we live in, to shop and support local or we’ll run the risk of losing it. It’s a thinly veiled threat by business owners that more often than not falls on deaf ears, thanks in large to the Kiwi she’ll be right attitude, or the thought that someone else will do it. But the message is being amplified as Covid continues to impact on the day-to-day life of the average business owner, especially in small centres like ours where the volume of foot traffic is not as great. Although we see and hear it, we are often guilty of misconstruing the message – taking it for granted and wanting to believe that it’s not actually true. How can my one piece of business be the difference

Matt Markham between a business keeping its doors open and shutting them for good? This week we’ve been struck by the harsh reality that it is true. That businesses are at threat of closing their doors for good and our community could end up suffering from their departure. And even worse, we might have been able to do something about it. Tuesday’s edition of the Ashburton Guardian told the tale of Retro Kitchen owners, Debbie and Kelly Macvey, who closed the doors on their fledgling

business on the weekend after 16 months of operation. A unique, slightly different approach to dining in Mid Canterbury than we have been used to in the past, the Retro Kitchen had its place. But the pressures of trying to keep staff employed, meet rising costs and keep the doors open were simply too much. And so, an asset to the Ashburton CBD is lost. And you get the distinct impression that it might just be the tip of the iceberg. Like the chance of running into a pothole on a Mid Canterbury road, it’s inevitable that there’s more to come. The string that holds businesses together is getting tighter and more strained by the day. As much as we might frown upon it – or think it not worthwhile – it’s critical that our dol-

lars are pumped back into this community as much as they possibly can be. The Guardian’s shop smart, shop local campaign has been a part of trying to drive the message for a number of months, and it’s been a success. But it’s not a Hail Mary play to fix all of the district’s problems. It’s a steppingstone to reintroduce everyone to the businesses that make us tick, and those that are the heart of the community. Giving you, our readers, the chance to connect with the stories and history of a business, irrelevant of whether they’ve been around for five minutes, or 50 years. If by reading the story or viewing the video of a local business lends itself to just one more person walking through

the door of a business, then the campaign has been a success. The flow-on impact of that visit has the potential to be huge, and who knows, perhaps keep a business going for that little bit longer. Our government has a lot to answer for in this situation because their silence and disregard to the plight of business owners around the country is almost deafening – but if we wait around for them to act, then it’s almost a guarantee it will be too late. No-one wants to read another story like that of Retro Kitchen and we certainly don’t want to have to write one. So, let’s do what we can to make sure there’s a thriving business district to enjoy when we do come out on the other side of all this mess.

Best of the best

H

ere’s something you all know: The Crusaders are the most successful Super Rugby franchise ever, with 12 titles in 25 years. Here’s another: They’ve had, and currently have, some of the best coaches to ever put on a tracksuit and blow a whistle. The big question is, how to narrow down the best from Wayne Smith, Robbie Deans and Scott Robertson, three very different former All Blacks who are among the finest rugby minds New Zealand has produced? The Crusaders have been a beacon of rugby excellence after a terrible first year in which they won only two matches (1996 is described, tongue in cheek as “the forgotten year” at the franchise but it’s anything but in reality), and yet they haven’t been without their issues on the

field and off the field, too, since then. Todd Blackadder, who never won a title at the Crusaders as a coach, nevertheless played a significant leadership role at the franchise and indeed the Canterbury province as a whole during the earthquakes and deserves a special mention. Apart from those four head coaches, there is only Vance Stewart, who led the franchise into professionalism in 1996 and discovered that neither he nor virtually anyone around him was prepared for it.

5. Vance Stewart

Stewart, a former All Blacks lock, had a good run with Canterbury from 1993-96 and enjoyed Ranfurly Shield success. It was no surprise when he was given the nod as Crusaders head coach for a bright and shiny new

competition but, as mentioned above, was successful in only two games. The players prepared like amateurs and performed like them. Stewart was replaced after one year by Wayne Smith, with skipper Richard Loe replaced by Todd Blackadder.

Local people, local knowledge

That’s three consecutive genuine Super Rugby titles – the first, in 2017, was in Johannesburg against the Lions, the first time a Kiwi or Aussie team has a won a final in South Africa, and two subsequent home finals against the Lions and Jaguares. After Covid hit, Robertson won back-to-back Super Rugby Aotearoa titles in 2020 and 2021. The man famously known as Razor, a former All Black, was seen as a maverick initially and had to start from the ground up. His success as Canterbury head coach suggested he had something and the way he breathes confidence into every Crusaders player under his command marks him as a coach of rare ability. His players love him but so too do his team’s supporters and sponsors. A brilliant man who deserves an international team sooner rather than later.

Deans, who took over from Smith as head coach in 2000, was a completely different character to the man who became known as The Professor. With Deans, who memorably marked his first year in charge with yet another against-the-odds final victory, this time against the Brumbies in Canberra, there was no doubt who was in charge. It’s hard to argue with Deans’ record: Five titles in nine years, including the loss of two finals. Deans often led by his force of personality alone, but he was a fine Super Rugby coach and he remains hugely popular in Christchurch.

The Chosen One ready for Ellerslie Although busy on day three of the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling sale, trainer Andrew Forsman was keeping a wary eye on the final fields for the prestigious Auckland Cup raceday at Ellerslie on Sunday. Forsman and training partner Murray Baker will have three of their Cambridge stable members in on the day, with star galloper The Chosen One set to tackle one of the feature events on the card,

Altrusa Club

A progress report on the almost finished table now just the glass top to arrive. There was a moment’s silence to pay tribute to our life member the late Jack Ross, who did so much for the club to get it under way. We helped celebrate an inaugural member’s seventh wedding anniversary. Show and Tell: Dave Strong: a knotted London plane bowl and a wee oak bowl. John Millichamp: spalted apricot and peach platter. Merv Peck: walnut segmented bowl, salt & pepper sets. Bruce Ferriman; neighbour’s claret, ash bowl & platter. Bill Healy spalted ash clock. Ron Donaldson: large ash platter. Roger Scammell spoke about his son, Grant, who now resides in Australia, about some of the intricate workmanship involved in creating unique furniture. It’s all very well to have marvellous ideas but then to make the item is another challenge. Certainly, the designs that Roger showed on the video were head scratching. Where do these ideas, thoughts come from? Amazing material. Thanks, Roger, for showing us these skills and specialised furniture.

Albeit with reduced numbers, we met as usual. Members joined the Ashburton Relay for Life, as seen in the media-published unnamed photo featuring balloons by the Clock Tower. The IFF Day on March 5th was a Zoom meeting, with members from the Timaru and Christchurch clubs. Thanks were received following donations to Hospice Mid Canterbury and Side Kicks, Tonga relief appeal. Our annual Ashburton Club District Fifteen Awards’ activities are being compiled and forwarded for the annual District Fifteen Conference, which will be held in Palmerston North 6th-8th May. Delegates for Conference were arranged. Picture books compiled for dementia patients are also appreciated by primary school children. The next Foot Clinic is on March 10. The Millennium sculptures on the Village Green have been spray cleaned by Peter Doak. On the 4th April, the Charter Birthday, Ashburton Altrusa will celebrate its 48th year.

Ashburton Bowling Club

Ashburton’s final Friday Triples, sponsored by Toyota and Skip-to-it, on the 4th, was played in glorious weather on superb greens! The placings are as follows: 1st B Mayson, B Harper, I Moore, with 3 wins, 17 ends, 41 points. 2nd G Bishop, J Forde, B Molloy with 3 wins, 16 ends, 39 points. 3rd R Bennett, M Quinn, W Watson with 3 wins, 16 ends, 26 points. 4th L Muir, D Muir, P Hurley with 2 wins, 1 draw, 13 ends, 29 points. 5th C Dennis, J Argyle, C Cleghorn with 2 wins, 15 ends, 27 points. 6th J Smart, J Ryk, R Lowe with 2 wins, 14 ends, 31 points. At the MSA Getaway Open Fours on Sunday, Ashburton’s Murray Anderson, Min Hill, Leonie Spargo and Wendy Suttie came 2nd, and in 3rd place were Ashburton’s Doug Kinvig, Heather Goodall, Laraine and Jim Mills. At the club’s Saturday Rollover, a small attendance enjoyed playing in the sunshine and the winners were Graham Taylor and Anne Gibson. The Sub Centre Over 75 triples was re-scheduled to be played at Hinds last

Wednesday, but had to be cancelled due to the number of unvailabilities. It will now be played at Hinds early next season. Our In-house Harry Lee Drawn Teams, sponsored by Pearsons Coachlines, is due to be played today, Thursday at 12.30pm. Whites and a plate, please. The Ashburton Ladies Triples, due to have been played last Monday, has been cancelled. The 2-4-2 open pairs, sponsored by JA GD Trudgeon & Truscott Hamilton, will be played at Ashburton on Wednesday 16th at 12.30 pm. In House Glassey Pairs, sponsored by Subway, has been re-scheduled for Monday, March 21, at 12.30 pm – names on the board please. Members are asked to return all trophies into the care of John Smart as soon as possible, thank you. In the meantime, good bowling everyone, but more importantly, please stay safe!

Last Saturday the sun shone in the afternoon, which seemed like the first time in months. A good crowd turned up to play in Matt’s Sega Golf Tourney. You could choose your tees, but you were not allowed your driver. Most fellas stayed off the usual white tees, not taking a big handicap cut to move up to the reds. Perry kept getting it wrong as he chose the Whites, then carried on playing his second from the reds. Still, the free beer tasted nice. Top score of the day was John Fechney with +12 points in the International stableford. Second on +10 was Shaun Hope on countback from Brian Fauth and Greig Sparrow popped in with a +8. Steve Richards managed to get the pleats on his skirt sorted as he won the longest drive off the ladies tees, and Pat Turton picked up a nearest the pin on number 4, but there was no mention of him in the twos, by all accounts it was a tap in four. Good fun as always. Thanks Matt. This Saturday we have round 2 of the Brandon Cup, a three round combined stableford competition. Eric Parr and Tommy Blacklow were the big scorers in round one. The whole week is sponsored

by the Midlands group, thank you all very much. Brandon round 2 is also a Points round for the RMF Silva Cup, pop along and give it a nudge. Alongside the normal golf we also have a challenge match. The young pups and the old dogs are both in the same pennants league, and an argument came up around who should be Ash “A” and Ash “B”. Now obviously the old dogs should be “A” as they absolutely smashed the pups last time out, but as we all know, little boys can through big tantrums, so after much crying, foot stomping and thrashing around on the floor, the very gracious old fellas agreed to a challenge match. Captains Dylan and Paddy have selected their top 6 players and they will face off during the afternoon round on Saturday. If anyone knows of any state registered nannies who may be available at the weekend can they please ask them along, because after another spanking the pups may get a wee bit grumpy and not want to go to bed! Catch you around the course. Good golfing.

Ashburton MSA Petanque

The NZ Triples were held in Levin this last weekend where several of our players

competed with success. Karen Bensdorp, Nicky Foden and their Christchurch partner were third equal with Chris Taylor and her two Dunedin partners in the NZ Women’s Triples. In the NZ Men’s, Richard Browne and his Dunedin partners were runners-up, with Neville Bensdorp and his Christchurch partners coming in 5th place. The NZ Shooting Competition was also held and Karen was second in the Women’s section. Congratulations to you all. This Sunday morning we are holding the Club Mixed Doubles, with the Over 80 “Top of the Hill” tournament being played the following Wednesday, which is open to players from other clubs. We are pleased to see many new faces playing our sport and enjoying themselves. We have had great support at the MSA for our raffles in the last three weekends, thank you everyone. Remember you are most welcome to join us any Tuesday and/or Thursday to learn the game. Be at 115 Racecourse Road by 1pm, equipment and tuition is provided, and enjoy a cuppa at the end of play. A Vaccine Pass is required.

Ashburton Woodworkers

Chair Dave Strong welcomed 15 members to the first meeting of the new year.

It was lovely to see so many attend our February meeting, with the threat of “the Virus” in our midst. If any members are suffering from this nasty, I wish you a speedy recovery and if any assistance is required, just let us know. The Mid Canterbury Rural Women Scholarships are now open for application. It is pleasing to be able to offer $1000 Scholarship, $500 Resource grant and $500 Lamont Scholarship for students studying for Art, Music or Sport related qualifications. Those students interested, are invited to obtain further information from Pauline Hewson 3036 397, or hopelands407@ gmail.com With the combined proceeds from raffles at our past two meetings, we have been able to donate $135.00 towards the ‘Relay for Life’ fundraiser, for the Cancer Society. It was a pleasure to participate in the two Rural Women NZ zoom meetings last week, discussing and voting on the Remits, from last years cancelled Conference in Christchurch. Congratulations must go to the RWNZ team in Wellington, for putting together this initiative. Sadly, we have cancelled our Meeting on 11 March, due to Covid in our local population. Any Enquiries contact Marg 3024717 or Sandra 302-4756.

NZ’s best water skiers heading to Lake Hood Matt Markham They’ve answered the call of their sport’s national body, now it’s full steam ahead for members of the Lake Hood Water Ski Club this month, as they prepare for one of the biggest events to be hosted on local waters. The New Zealand National Water Ski championships are set to be held at the end of March, an event months of planning goes into to ensure a smoothly run competition. This year’s event was set to be held on Lake Crichton in Ellesmere, but a last-minute change of mind in order to offer the best experience to everyone involved sees the championships Ashburton bound, to Lake Hood. And with just five weeks left to get everything in order, there’s some frenetic energy emanating out of the local water ski club who have been charged with pulling it off. “We’re absolutely thrilled to be able to bring Nationals to Lake Hood and to share our wonderful tournament site with New Zea-

land’s water-skiing elite,” Lake Hood Water Ski Club nationals co-ordinator, Janeen Donaldson said. “But, with just five weeks to prepare after the venue change, our team are now working their butts off to get the site ready as well as find some time to ski the kids as well.” With Covid impacting so heavily on major sporting events around the country, there was a desire within the water-skiing community to pull out all the stops to ensure that the nationals could go ahead. “Skiers around the country have put far too much effort in to miss out on their pinnacle event of the season, and many are at the top of their age groups. “So, it would be gutting to miss another year. It’s been such a difficult time for all sports people,” Donaldson said. The Nationals will be a lot lighter on numbers than what they normally would be, with many competitors staying home to avoid the chance of being impacted by isolation – but the best of the best will be in action over the five days on the water. Donaldson said Lake Hood was the chosen location due to what the region can offer to those travelling to compete.

Tom Green in action at the recent Aquafest at Lake Hood where it’s been announced this year’s National Water Ski Championships will be held. “Ashburton has an abundance of accommodation and restaurant options, which has made hosting this event in Covid times a little easier. “We’ve been lucky in that the Canterbury Water Ski Association and our wider skiing community here have been very supportive,

as have the Lake Hood management and trustees, and already we’ve had offers of support from local businesses both through their services and sponsorship.” The New Zealand National Water Ski Championships will begin on Tuesday, March 22 and run through until Saturday, March 26.

“We have all the top seeds in the age groups entered and skiing families from around the country travelling to compete, the open events on the Saturday will be hotly contested and not to be missed.” More information on the championships will be released in the coming weeks.

Celtic Squash Croquet celebrates still opens the doors Dulcie Pierre of Waireka and Dale Blackie of Tainui share a high five before their match at the South Island Vets Tournament on the weekend.

being able to compete Matt Markham As Covid sweeps its way across the South Island, sporting events across the mainland are being impacted – but for most the desire to press ahead and compete still burns strong. That was the case when the picturesque Waireka Croquet Club hosted the South Island Vets Tournament over the weekend, with numbers down, but those who did attend and compete did so in high spirits. The two-day event, which was played under beautiful skies and

conditions, saw more than a dozen players step onto the terrain for the competition across four different categories. And while the numbers might have been down, the action during the competition was fierce and competitive, with the locals making their presence known across all grades. Allenton Croquet Club member Barbara Field turned in a tidy performance to finish runner-up in the Intermediate Grade, which consisted of five players, while Gail Bensemen of the Waireka Club was second in B Grade, which had the same numbers. C Grade was held as a best of three competition, with Methven’s Joey Gerard being crowned the winner at the completion of play.

Matt Markham There’s action aplenty upcoming at the Celtic Squash Club, and it all kicks off this week. The club is holding an open court night tomorrow night (Friday) at the their clubrooms on Keenans Road in an effort to try and bring new players into the sport and show them what it’s all about on the court. Club spokesperson, Kirsty Clay, said the night came with the kicker that there was no expectation on anyone to walk through the door and be expected to join the club, but instead to enjoy a night out and learn a little more about squash. “There’s definitely no obligation to join up after it, it’s just an invitation for people to come along for a fun night out, and who

knows, you might even like it,” she said. The club is providing all the necessary gear to anyone who does come along, with rackets available, and the only request is that people wear non-marking shoes and have their vaccine pass ready to show on arrival. The open night coincides with a number of other initiatives the club are actively pursuing at the moment, including the introduction of racketball. A slightly different version of the sport, racketball uses smaller, but wider rackets and a larger ball than the normal squash ball. The Celtic club will hold racketball open nights and will also launch a league to really get the sport moving. Also upcoming is junior coaching nights, and a league night for the younger players as well. Friday night’s Open Night begins at 6pm and runs through until 8pm, with a second event set down for Sunday, March 27 from 3pm. Food and drinks are available at the club.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): The best outcomes happen with a diverse group or a challenging partnership. Working through disagreement will bring about magical combinations and evolutions. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): When you sense in another person the sadness that has inhabited you, you want to do something for the sake of both of you. Even though you feel healed, further recovery comes from helping others. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Your internal compass seems to be leading you to a dead end, but follow it anyway. This road weirdly winds, so you’re only seeing a few feet in front of you at a time. You can trust your sense of direction. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Your mind is forceful. You’ll skilfully relay your ideas. There’s no guarantee the others will be convinced, but chances are good. You’re impressively adept at landing on the most convincing phrasing. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Your work is not always so straightforward, so you appreciate days like today when the small picture so obviously matches up to the big one. The mountain is climbed one upward step at a time. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): It takes more energy to start things than to continue them. Make momentum work for you by simply continuing. Once you get in the swing, stay in it. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): What you want is out there, though it currently belongs to someone else. That doesn’t mean you can’t have it. It just means there will be some salesmanship involved. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): People often laugh because they think they should; it’s a social response to a cue, and not necessarily one they understand. Those who laugh alone truly know what’s funny. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): There’s much you could be doing, but don’t stress over choices. Just pick the one that most attracts you, and then stick with that for a while. One choice is a portal through which the world opens up. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Some call it “doing nothing.” To you, it’s doing what comes naturally without having to think of the needs and reactions of another person. To be alone and agenda-less may be a basic human need. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Today feels a bit like a costume party in which you are handed an arbitrary outfit at the door and told to start up the impersonation. Does it help to know that everybody feels this way? PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Everyone has fun differently, so if you’re not catching on to what seems to delight others, it only means that there are other sources out there for you. That’s not a reason to stay where you are. Go find them!

Thursday: Low cloud, and patchy morning drizzle, clearing early afternoon. Low cloud returning in the evening. Northeasterlies.

A ridge covers much of the country, while a front near Stewart Island sinks southward. A low moves past the southwest of New Zealand, bringing a front that moves up the South Island on Friday, weakening onto the North Island on Saturday. Strong northerlies precede the front. From Sunday, a low moves near the northeast of the North Island and another front moves onto the South Island.

Brackley Farm 556 Lauriston Barrhill Road, Barrhill Located in the renowned area of Barrhill, Mid Canterbury, this 235 hectare property shows all the attributes of diverse soils and irrigation, combining to produce a range of crops, specialist small seeds and vegetables. Supporting crop rotations, the grazing of capital stock and finishing winter lambs supplying local and export markets add to the various revenue streams capable from a property of this nature. Irrigation is sourced from an on farm bore and ground water consent, applied via pivot and fixed boom lateral irrigators giving effective coverage and application. Retaining paddock shelter for crops and livestock was paramount. The irrigation system is set out to maximise coverage whilst keeping as many shelter belts as possible in the course of development. The combination of two properties offers two houses and farm yards connected by the central laneway with a full array of

farm buildings including approximately 1,100 tonnes of grain storage and drying, two shearing sheds and sheep yards, cattle yards, hay and implement sheds, combine shed and workshops. The main three bedroom homestead features large open plan living, dining and kitchen with a well-positioned butler’s pantry. Set on the site of the original homestead with established trees and designed to capture sun and natural light. A three bedroom cottage with updated kitchen is suitable for extended family or staff. At the yard adjacent to the main homestead is an 80 x 50 metre equestrian arena, five stables and tack room as well as eight sheltered horse paddocks. Offered to the market after being held in one family for many years and faithfully farmed, opportunities of this degree are seldom available.
