Spontaneous combustion sparks fire Maddison Gourlay If you think your stack of hay bales are beginning to smoulder then call Fire and Emergency. That’s the advice from Fire and Emergency (FENZ) after attending a hay bale fire on a rural property in Pendarves this week. Multiple volunteer fire crews were called out after a large number of hay bales caught fire due to spontaneous combustion. A FENZ spokesperson said an appliance and tanker from the Rakaia station and a tanker from Pendarves station arrived on the scene to find around 650 hay bales and 40 metres of hedge and tree line all on fire. Two tankers from the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Station had to assist. FENZ were also assisted by heavy machinery to create a pit to put the smouldering hay bales into to stop any further spread, a FENZ spokesman said.

Crews from Pendarves, Rakaia and Ashburton attended a hay bale fire in Dorie on Wednesday night. Crews left the property at 1am Thursday, but a Pendarves tanker returned later that morning to continue dampening down the area to prevent further issues.

A FENZ spokesman said that the contractor had been checking the hay bale stack of 800 with a probe periodically. The 800 large bales of annual

rye grass had 18 per cent moisture at the time of baling. “Smaller stack sizes can assist in reducing the build-up of heat,’’ a FENZ spokesperson said.

“Call 111 if you think your stack is beginning to smoulder, but people should remember to not climb on top of stacks in case they are burning inside.’’

Highest rate rise in over 10 years “

Jonathan Leask Ashburton District Council’s “no frills” budget still delivers the biggest rate rise in over a decade – and it hasn’t gone down well with the public. Mayor Neil Brown has signalled a 9.4 per cent average rate rise in the council’s draft annual plan, describing it as a no frills, back to basics budget that’s being impacted by record inflation, Covid-related stresses, and new property valuations But the biggest rates rise in over 10 years isn’t sitting comfortably with ratepayers, with Guardian Facebook followers making their points strongly known. Matt Harris said the council “has a different definition of no frills than the rest of us”. Kylie Flanagan said that “with

Neil Brown the cost of everything going up, how are we all going to afford this?” Others touched on the need for improvements to roading and water supplies, which would require further funding and a bigger rate rise or making better use of the existing rates funding. Greg Martin looked at the bigger picture when he said “it’s also the huge effect of compounding increases over the last 10 years. Increases on top of the increases”. And he’s right because in the

past 10 years rates have increased a combined 51.5 per cent, with an average increase of 5.15 per year from 2012/13 to 201/22. They have fluctuated from the low Covid-impacted 2.56 per cent in 2020/21 to 7.2 per cent in 2014/15, an annual plan that included $18m for the EA Networks Centre. The 2022/23 draft annual plan is being compiled for the councillors to consider in April before it goes out for public consultation. But Brown said the council planned to hold consultation meetings to explain to residents how the council arrived at 9.4 per cent. Inflation, factored in at 5 per cent, and increasing costs were key

components, while there was also the impact of the property revaluations. A hot real estate market had pushed values up by around 25.5 per cent since 2018 to an average of $486,000. That figure had already created plenty of opposition and concern in the community. With the weight of online anguish over the proposed rise, it will be of interest if that animosity flows through in the public consultation. Last year’s long-term plan received a higher than average 431 submissions.

Reclaiming killer’s path for peace Daryl Holden He’s stared death in the face after being shot nine times, so serious blister pain was never going to stop Christchurch mosque massacre survivor Temel Atacocugu completing his peace trek. Atacocugu arrived in Ashburton yesterday on his journey from Dunedin to Christchurch where he’s retracing the path the Australian terrorist took before murdering 51 mosque worshippers in March, 2019. Atacocugu, who was shot in the face, arms and legs, planned to walk the route of the killer to reclaim it in peace but serious blisters on both heels and a blood infection almost ended his mission, putting him in Timaru Hospital for two days. He’s now had to bike part of the way now to complete his journey because quitting was never an option. “I can tell you I had an experience in Timaru Hospital when they changed the dressing for my blisters,’’ he said. “The nurse said, ‘oh, sorry. I hurt you’. I said, ‘don’t worry about it. I have experienced much worse pain than that three years ago. This is nothing’.’’ Following the same route the shooter took leading up to that fateful day, Atacocugu remains as determined as ever to turn the negativity into positivity in a journey that started on March 1. “Because I am a stubborn Turk,’’ he laughed. Atacocugu would continue biking to Rolleston today before resting on Sunday and Monday. He would then drive back to Rolleston from his home in Christchurch early on Tuesday morning to finish his trek by walking to the Al Noor Mosque with a vey deliberate finish time in his sights on what would be the third anniversary of one of New Zealand’s darkest days. “I want to arrive at 1.40pm on Tuesday at Al Noor (mosque),’’ he said. “That is exactly the time the terrorist started the shooting.

No stopping him: Christchurch mosque massacre survivor Temel Atacocugu arriving in Ashburton yesterday on his very personal peace trek from Dunedin to Christchurch. “I will be there then. I started this mission by walking and I will finish it by walking. “It is symbolic.’’ Emotionally, completing his journey would be important for the 46-year-old, who moved to New Zealand in 2009 and who would never forget looking directly at the then 28-year-old Australian killer during the mur-

derous rampage. “He looked at me,’’ he said. “The sun was shining straight on his face, so I saw all the detail of him. “I can’t ever forget that.’’ Atacocugu, who has had 20 surgeries to overcome his injuries, believed his mission was a request from Allah, his Islamic God.

He was also raising money for the Key to Life Charitable Trust, the Child Cancer Foundation and Save the Children, with more than $40,000 having been donated. But this was also as personal as it could get for one of 40 injured survivors from the barbaric Al Noor and Linwood mosque attacks, which resulted in the

shooter being sentenced to life imprisonment without parole in 2020. “I get flashbacks and it haunts me all the time,’’ said Atacocugu, who has had suicidal thoughts and suffers from post traumatic stress. “I think it will haunt me for the rest of my life, too. “It won’t leave me alone.’’

Three Waters: ‘Disappointed they didn’t go further’ – mayor Jonathan Leask The Ashburton Mayor says new recommendations on Three Waters reforms don’t go far enough. The independent Three Waters Working Group of council and iwi representatives has delivered its report to Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta, who is expected to consider them as the government works towards introducing legislation in mid-2022. Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown said that some of the recommendations would strengthen the proposed reforms, but he still believes Ashburton won’t be any better off. “The proposed model isn’t good for our community,” he said. Brown is disappointed the working group didn’t take on board the proposal from the Communities for Local Democracies (C4LD), suggesting alternative governance models than the government’s model. “I’m disappointed they didn’t go further and listen to C4LD proposals,” Brown said. “We believe that is a better option than what they have got but if you accept the option they have got, [the recommendations] have strengthened some areas”. A public shareholding structure to maintain public ownership of water assets is among the 47 recommendations. The working group has urged the government to give councils a shareholding interest in the four waters entities based on population – one share per 50,000 people – partly in an effort to address concerns over loss of ownership and the risk of privatisation.

The independent Three Waters Working Group of council and iwi representatives has delivered its report to Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta. Brown said other than safeguarding privatisation, the shareholding is an empty gesture. “They don’t have a lot attached to it. “It does send a signal that iwi don’t have ownership of the assets, communities own them and iwi are part of the community.” The working group also recommended the establishment of sub-groups, below the Regional Representation Groups, that will ensure local voices are always considered in investment prioritisation which

Brown supported. Another recommendation is a Water Ombudsman to oversee water service entities’ interactions with water users. Brown said now it’s a waiting game to see what of the 47 recommendations the government takes on board. Ultimately, there is one thing everyone agrees on. “We all agree we need clean healthy water. “There is some pathways to get there and

we believe the one the government is taking isn’t right here in Ashburton. “I don’t agree with it but you have to be part of the process. “We still want to steer it for if it happens but we are still fighting against it.”

When TK Paul read a Facebook message from an Ashburton mother with three children appealing for food because they were in lockdown, he felt helpless. “I wanted to do something so I contacted my mother, who suggested care packages of food,” he said. Within two days, TK founded Manaakitanga – Caring for the People – and contacted his aunt, Tania Reuben, at Hakatere Marae. “She said great idea, let’s do it and my idea was born,” he said.

TK and Tania established a Facebook page and called on local people isolating at home from Covid and who needed help, to respond. “We were blown away by the number who replied. Most of them wanted a hot meal and by Tuesday we were in action,” TK said. With the assistance of Safer Mid Canterbury, the Salvation Army, other agencies and volunteer drivers, they prepared and delivered 165 hot meals from the marae around town that night. “We were delighted to meet the needs of people. Their reaction was humbling and overwhelming,” he said. marae ringawera Three (chefs) cook the meals, TK and Tania prepare them on biodegradable plates, provided by

Kai for Kids, and drivers deliver them around Ashburton. It’s a seamless operation that starts around 4pm and, by shortly after 5pm, the hot meals are on their way. In four days they’ve delivered nearly 500 hot meals and Reuben promises they’ll “keep going as long as there’s a demand, seven days a week.” The meals include meat, vegetables and a dinner roll but, by last night, they had extended their service to also offer food parcels and care packages. Thursday saw major food donations from ANZCO and New World and TK admits he cried when the supermarket offered assistance. “My wee idea has become something massive. It’s brought smiles to our faces,” he said.

Hello Reefton, here we come Malcolm Hopwood The worst part of the Rescue Warriors’ sponsored ride from Cape Reinga to Bluff was the start. Four Mid Canterbury cyclists left the top of the North Island on February 25 with the wind in their faces. It was hard work and they had to complete the journey before the tide came in. “We got there. It was such a long beach, the hardest part of our journey,” Bruce Kell said. Now, after nearly a fortnight, Bruce, David Keeley and Willy Leferink, are cycling to Reefton today. The flare-up of an old knee injury saw the fourth member, Warren Harris, retire after the third day. The remaining three crossed to the South Island on the inter-island ferry early Thursday morning, arriving about 5.30am, then toiled up Maungatapu Sad-

dle on the way to Nelson. They’re now approaching Buller and the West Coast. “We feel brilliant and our legs are holding up,” said Kell, the youngest at 60. “It’s still hard work but, when we wake in the morning, we look forward to the ride. We’re holding our fitness.” They have a nutritious diet, but admit to being sustained by pies and ice-creams as they ride. The three of them have been spoilt by good conditions in the north and would even enjoy “a bit of bad weather on the West Coast, just for the challenge”. The journey will take them down the West Coast, through the southern lakes to Invercargill and then Bluff, with a completion date of just over a week. “We’ll be finishing, no doubt about it. There’s too much at stake,” he said. By that, they mean they’ve received $25,000 in sponsorship to complete the journey and already they’ve exceeded the total. “It’s hard to keep track on the journey, but we know we’ve met our financial target and more.”

Donga do up: Wildlife covenant paves way for motorbike park at Ashton Beach Jonathan Leask Ashton Beach could be home to a new motorbike park. If not, it will at least be home to a new protected wildlife area. The Ashton Beach enhancement project proposes the installation of a new motorbike park on an unused part of the Ashburton District Council’s Ocean Farm at the beach, but to do so they are required to create a protected wildlife area around it. The plans to construct the motorbike park on the donga (a steep-sided gully) area have been held up after the Department of Conservation (DOC) advised the council that a Wildlife Act Authority was likely to be declined without a commit-

ment to protect alternative areas for conservation purposes at Ashton Beach. The council is now proceeding with its Wildlife Act Authority application after it agreed to covenanting an area of land (9492m2) adjacent to the proposed motorbike park site. The area is home to important native plant species including endangered Southern Grass Skinks meaning simply installing the park would breach the Wildlife Act (1953). All native lizards are protected under the Act meaning it is illegal to catch, collect, kill or cause habitat loss without a permit. To obtain a permit, the council moved to establish the land protection covenant around the park to help ensure a southern grass skink population on the property in perpetuity. The covenanted area surrounding the park is already fenced off and an indicative track has been mapped out on the terrain.

Sarah Mosley, council’s people and capability manager, said the motorbike fraternity are “ready, willing, and wanting us moving as fast as we can”. Councillor Len Braam said the council was “working hard to achieve something that has not been tried anywhere else in New Zealand”. “We are going to mix different groups, and I mean completely different groups, close together.” Councillor Lynette Lovett was excited by the future prospects of the collaborative project. “We are at the start of this journey and if we don’t start it now I think we might lose the opportunity the way rules and regulations are going.” The new covenant will help the application, but DOC can still decline the motorbike park going ahead, however, the council covenanting of adjoining land will continue. To date the project has cost the

council over $18,000 on approvals and project management with an estimated additional $7000 needed to complete the approvals process. The total project budget was estimated at $55,000. The $22,000 set aside for habitat construction will be lower as the original plan included relocation of the skinks but, open

spaces planner Bert Hofmans said under specialist advice they had moved away from relocation as a mitigation measure.

You paid how much for that?

T

hings are certainly changing. Or more correctly, they’ve already changed. Pandemic, financial systems, social systems, technology, and the general increased difficulty in just existing in your tiny patch on the planet. No-one promised it would be easy, it’s just no one imagined it would be this difficult. Ukraine is just a heartbreaker. How helpless we all feel watching that atrocity unfold, whilst the world is torn between wanting to assist and not being drawn into World War Three. Most of us have attended countless Anzac Day services where we remember those who fought for our freedoms and hope that the lessons learned from a horrific past will suffice to ensure civilisation never has to experience that again. Seems we are doomed to repeat it. The nett result of aspirations of power and territorial ambitions. And polar opposite ideologies. But closer to home, following the first lockdown, who knew the real estate market would explode. It did and prices hiked massively. I clearly recall three decades ago in Auckland being flabbergasted at a section for sale for 100k.

Peter McQuarters PETE’S PERSPECTIVE Being from lil’ ol’ Ashburton, you could have bought a prime spot here for less than 20k then, in some cases, much less. I was reminded of this when dealing with a Wanaka story this week. Reportedly, a week and half ago, stage 1A of a new Wanaka subdivision hit the market. By lunch time it was more than half sold out. Since then more contracts have been signed and it’s well on its way to completely selling out. Section sizes 600m2 to 960m2 and the prices? Starting at 625k through to 799k. For a section. According to the agent, a very high percentage were local buyers: first home !!!, retirees and recent families who had located to Wanaka. I have spent much of the past few days trying to figure out how a first home buyer can afford at least 625k just for the land, before they put anything on it. Clearly I’m missing something. And it’s money.

But don’t worry, if we just keep taking the tablets we will all get through. Somehow. Chur.

Income tax thresholds need to change

O

n Saturdays I do my grocery shop, and fill up my car. Ouch. The skyrocketing cost of living is hitting us all in the back pocket, but is being most acutely felt by low to middle income earners and retirees. In the past four years food prices are up more than 13 per cent; the average rent is up $140 a week; and it costs $45 more at the petrol pump to fill a standard tank. And if you want to buy your first home, Canterbury’s average property value rose 29.8 per cent ($163,000) in the year to October 1, well above the nationwide annual growth rate of 26.6 per cent. Rising interest rates mean costs on a $600,000 mortgage are up $7200 in the last 12

Nicola Grigg SELWYN MP months, and they’re only going up from here. With prices rising twice as fast as wages, the average family is worse off than they were 12 months ago – but high inflation means income tax is higher. We’ve got the perverse situation where someone on the average wage now has a marginal tax rate of 33 per cent. And someone on the minimum wage only has to work a 44 hour week to face a marginal tax rate of 30 cents on the dollar.

Knowing how much this is worrying everyone, the National Party is focusing on proposing ideas, rather than just opposing dumb government decisions. That’s why we’re saying that at the upcoming Budget in May, the Finance Minister should use a portion of his record $6 billion new spending allowance to adjust income tax thresholds to account for inflation. This would mean someone on $55,000 a year would get $800 in tax relief and anyone earning $88,100 or above would be better off by over $1000 a year. Because NZ Super is indexed to the average after-tax wage, superannuitants would also benefit. The couple rate for

to existing services like health, education or the police. They wouldn’t mean austerity or a Budget with no new spending. They would be met from the Finance Minister’s $6 billion slush fund – and he would still have three-quarters of that allowance left to fund new initiatives or pay down debt, which would still be a record amount of new spending. In fact the remaining $4.3 billion would still be the biggest ever new budget spending allowance. I, for one, like to think I know how to spend my money better than the Government can. No let-up with food parcel demand Malcolm Hopwood The demand for food parcels in Ashburton is ongoing and upward. Salvation Army’s Lieutenant, Elizabeth Walker-Ratu, said the demand, which traditionally eases off after students return to school, is continuing as the Omicron pandemic spreads. The Salvation Army’s foodbank is traditionally busy in mid to late January as parents meet the cost of school uniforms, stationery and lunches, and “don’t have enough money for family food”. However, it’s continued through February and March. “People are worried about Covid and fearful they might get caught out, so they’re coming to us to stock up on food,” she said. “In addition, the cost has definitely risen and, as winter approaches, clients are anxious about increasing power charges and petrol at the pumps which might reduce their ability to get to the foodbank or supermarkets.” As well as people stocking up and regular clients struggling to make ends meet, she’s confronting a new group of people who’ve never approached the foodbank before. “They’re people who’ve lost jobs or had them reduced and need a helping hand while they seek new employment,” she said.

Massacre survivor an inspiration

H

e looked a killer gunman in the eye from about 20 metres away – and lived to tell the story. He’s Christchurch mosque massacre survivor Temel Atacocugu, who was shot nine times by the Australian terrorist in a chilling rampage that left 51 worshippers dead and 40 injured in March 2019. Atacocugu was one of the lucky ones if you can call being shot in both legs, an arm and his face, and being haunted by the massacre every day since then, as being lucky. But at least he’s alive and right now Atacocugu is trying to do what he calls reclaiming peace by retracing the journey the murderer took from his Dunedin flat to Christchurch before the carnage unfolded. On page 3 in today’s Guardian, Atacocugu has called it his walk

Daryl Holden for peace, though it now involved cycling after serious blister pain and a blood infection forced him into hospital for two days. That nearly resulted in a premature end to his journey, which started on March 1 and would end on Tuesday on the third anniversary of the attacks. Chatting with Atacocugu just outside Temuka in fading light on Thursday, it’s impossible not to be inspired by his personal mission and his determination. He’s a likeable fellow, still able to smile for the camera where a photographer from the London Guardian newspaper was follow-

ing his trek. And though Atacocugu has a very personal motivation to retrace the killer’s journey, the 46-year-old from Turkey is also raising money for various charities and that looks set to top $50,000.

onment without parole in 2020. “That terrorist tried to destroy our peaceful life here in New Zealand,’’ he said. “Why we let him do that?’’ “I can’t. This is my mission.’’ It’s a mission to applaud, so give him a toot if you see him

terrorist tried to destroy our peaceful “ That life here in New Zealand. Why we let him do that? I can’t. This is my mission.

But will his journey really make a difference after so many lives were lost and families changed forever? Yes, you bet, believes Atacocugu. He rightly argues that he couldn’t sit back and do nothing to show his disdain for the terrorist, sentenced to life impris-

on his bike heading to Rolleston today, or walking those final kilometres into Christchurch on Tuesday.

And one more thing . . . Pop. Hear that noise? Is that the bubble bursting for Prime Minister Jacinda Ard-

ern, our sweet smiling political princess, who’s enjoyed a higher international profile than probably any other New Zealand PM in history for her leadership during a series of national tragedies, including the Covid pandemic? Perhaps Ardern’s narrative has begun to move after a key political poll showed her popularity had dropped and so, too, had that of her Labour party. Ardern still holds the top spot in the preferred Prime Minister stakes, but she’s dropped one point to 34 per cent. While National’s Christopher Luxon has shot up 8 points to 25 per cent, according to the 1News-Kantar poll. More significantly perhaps, the poll showed that National had pulled ahead of Labour for the first time in more than two years. Too early to mean anything? Maybe. Time will tell, I guess.

ANGUS JOHN WHYTE Born 11/08/21 Christchurch Women’s Hospital

Was born in Christchurch Hospital after being induced. She is my little miracle princess, her arrival was luckily just before the flooding, otherwise I would have been trapped out on the farm unable to get anywhere let alone to town or the hospital! I’m so thankful and proud to be her mother.

ASTRID IVY WELSH

Angus lives in Ashburton with mum Kate Whyte (nee Hurley) and Calum Whyte. His arrival was special because he’s our first baby.

JADAH IVY-REESE INGLE

Born 8/4/21

Born 16/01/21 Christchurch Women’s Hospital, but we live in Tinwald Ashburton. Parents Shahana and Tristan Ingle

Her arrival was special, because after having my two boys whom were born in Timaru hospital, I was able to have a lovely home birth in my lounge by the fire with my midwife, whom has recently retired, and while my boys were home, I also had my friend who was there to support me.

MARYKE BLIGNAULT Born 13/09/21

Surprise baby boy was born, baby brother to the 14, 12 and 10-yearold brothers. We are loving every moment of this. What a blessing!

FOX CHRISTOPHER MITCHELL Born 27/01/21 Ashburton Maternity Ward at 7.34am Parents Riki-lee Marshall and Tyler Mitchell

Our wee cherub was due on February 14 (Valentine’s Day), mine and my partner’s anniversary and my partner’s late uncle Chris (Fox’s middle name). But Fox had other plans and decided he couldn’t wait to come out and meet everyone and at 37 weeks and two days my waters broke when I was out for dinner. It didn’t seem a big deal and at 10.30pm, when I was just about asleep, I had another wee accident and after that my waters broke fully and it was all go from there. I had a dream birth at Ashburton Maternity Ward with my amazing midwife Lynn, her student midwife Claire and my partner Tyler. I couldn’t have asked for a better team to be there! He arrived at 7.34am with a head full of red hair! We had picked the name before we had seen his red hair, but he definitely suits it and now he is nearly one and it has been the most rewarding, fulfilling year full of so much love with our wee man. Kind regards Riki-lee Marshall

Jadah’s delivery was a miracle, as my husband and I have been together for 23 years, since we were teens. We never thought we would have the opportunity to get pregnant and have a baby of our own. Almost six years ago we decided to become foster parents but we’re blessed with a newborn baby boy who is now fully adopted by us. We thought he would be our only miracle child! However, last lockdown we learned we were pregnant which was so very unexpected. Twenty-three years in the making and we have now completed our, what we thought we were already completed, family.

BRYLEE TATE FLETCHER Born 29/06/21 Parents Courtney Menzies and Paul Fletcher

She was born in Christchurch Women’s Hospital due to my waters breaking and failing to go into labour on my own, I needed to be induced. I suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) for the entire pregnancy and the birth seemed to go smoothly until she was born very quickly and she went into shock. She failed to breathe on her own and required full CPR and oxygen – it was terrifying to think we almost lost her. Before we left Christchurch Women’s she was chosen to be the baby for the article written about the woollen hats donated for the newborns which was published in the Star paper and the Courier as well as online. Six months on and she’s the happiest wee poppet.

Born 19/07/21

Hi my name is Evie Grace Miller and mummy was supposed to be induced, but a week before I wanted to come and surprise mum before Mother’s Day. Mum had it tough when she lost our angel baby due to an ectopic pregnancy and had to get her left tube removed. She was told she may not be able to have any babies, but I surprised mummy on her birthday with a positive pregnancy test. My smile is contagious, it lights up everyone’s face anywhere I go.

She is the first baby born in Canterbury and the second baby born in New Zealand for 2021. She went into labour on New Year’s Eve from 9am. By 11.45pm I was in a lot of pain, but after a particularly painful contraction the couple headed to hospital. In short order, mum’s waters broke, she pushed and then bam, Miss Ivah was officially born. Nurses and our midwife were excited as when I got to the hospital and my waters broke; people were yelling out the New Year’s countdown, fireworks were going off and Ivah made her grand entry.

Lochie’s arrival was very special to both of us as he is our first child. He was also the first grandchild of both sides of our family so his birth was just that little bit more special! Lochie arrived five days late too which made us both very impatient as we were both very excited to meet him. After having to follow my partner while she was in the ambulance being transferred to Christchurch Hospital, watching the flashing lights made me very stressed. Once Lochie had arrived all that stress went away, plus mum was in the best hands!

LINCOLN GEORGE KING

Born 08/11/21 Christchurch Women’s Hospital Parents: Ben and Allie King (who live in Staveley/Ashburton Forks) Lincoln’s arrival was special due to the difficulties in conceiving and the ongoing difficulties in pregnancy. Lincoln was conceived after two years, by intrauterine insemination. During pregnancy Allie had appendicitis and the surgeons decided to remove the appendix by keyhole surgery while mum was 26 weeks pregnant. At 31 weeks’ pregnant, after just recovering from the appendicitis, Allie then got incredibly sick with campylobacter. After a rough time conceiving and a rough pregnancy, Lincoln was born two weeks early, and spent a short stint in NICU for brain monitoring. Despite how sick Allie was, and Lincoln being two weeks early, he was still a healthy 9lb 3oz. He is now 8 weeks old and is healthy and happy. His parents are very grateful to the doctors, midwives and nurses.

Joel’s arrival was during level 3 lockdown but we were able to transfer to Ashburton Maternity a few hours after he was born. He is the first grandchild on his mother’s side, and was born on his late great granny’s birthday. Joel is both a Kiwi and American, he has the cutest smile and big blue eyes. Waterski nationals will prove Lake Hood’s pedigree

A

chievement, satisfaction and vindication. The three words are part of Neil and Janeen Donaldson’s dialogue as they prepare for the National Water Ski Championships at Lake Hood from March 22-26. It’s been a 35-year journey to have the lake recognised as a national venue, far too long. When the championships were offered five weeks ago, the Donaldsons leapt at the chance. The timing wasn’t ideal, the pandemic is still sweeping New Zealand and the event is limited to 100 people. But they forged ahead, knowing that hosting the nationals provided the opportunity to showcase Lake Hood and what it offers. The lake has already hosted Oceania and international competition, now it’s the venue for New Zealand’s most prestigious event. “It’s long overdue,” Neil said. He won’t say anymore because it’s political, but the nationals are their chance to prove Lake Hood’s pedigee. The Donaldsons are a waterskiing family and Neil comes from an earlier generation that took to boating and waterskiing at Lake Clearwater from a young age. “It’s what we do as a family. We waterski,” he said. But they’ve done much more than that and it all began in 1987, the year they married. Neil and Janeen would travel to Lake Clearwater, a two-hour journey there and back. But it made sense to have a venue closer. A meeting was called by helicopter pilot and keen skier, Ken Kingsbury, and Neil attended. He became a founder member of the Ashburton Aquatic Park Society. At their first meeting they meant business and, when land was offered by Malcolm and Lynn Stewart, they grabbed it. Doug Hood showed interest, his diggers were engaged, but then they encountered the creaking machinery of governance. It took 11 years of hearings and resource consents before the site became shovel ready. While Neil, Janeen and the society sought a venue where Ashburton could host national and international events, there was no tunnel vision in their thinking. “We wanted to build a recreational lake for all manner of users, including waterskiers,” they said. Approval was given at the start of the new century and development began. Water flowed into the lake in 2001 and it opened on April 2, 2002. Ironically, the date for the nationals will be a week short of its 20th anniversary. A lot has happened. Water Ski Lake Hood became the new club name in 2011, the year a clubhouse was craned on to the site. Sections were sold, Lake Hood became an attractive urban location and visitors, who knew about it, marvelled at the canals and tributaries. Other communities admired what Ashburton had done and

Ashburton’s Donaldson family has been the face of waterskiing in Mid Canterbury and beyond for many years. Now Neil and Janeen face their biggest challenge, to plan, run and compete in the nationals at Lake Hood. By Malcolm Hopwood

The calm before the storm. Janeen and Neil Donaldson relax at home.

Finally, Lake Hood has been recognised as the venue for the nationals. “It’s brilliant for Mid Canterbury,” they said. Since the go-ahead was given, they’ve put hundreds of hours into planning the event. Neil is technical director, which involves judging, administering, measuring and videoing, just about everything short of running the event on the day. Janeen is site and event co-ordinator. “We’ve only had five weeks’ notice so we’re doing it as a team,” they said. The Donaldsons also have a further involvement and a significant one. As well as being key organisers, they’re competing and not taking part to make up numbers. The Donaldson are one of New Zealand’s foremost waterskiing families and they have the trophies to prove it. Neil, who has a B. Commerce from Canterbury University, is a director of Leech and Partners in Ashburton and Christchurch, specialising in farm and taxation accountancy. That’s his day job. His passion is waterskiing. He’s competed throughout New Zealand and overseas. He’s been an age group champion and strutted the catwalk as a medalist in national and senior age group competition. “It’s the speed and the thrill. I’ve always tried to be better than my competitors,” he said. “It’s a family sport and, for us, it involves both parents and children.” Janeen trained in nursing and is now a part-time Plunket nurse

The Donaldson family have spent a fair bit of time on Lake Hood.

some even thought about replicating it elsewhere. While this was happening, Water Ski Lake Hood built towers and jumps and held up to four world-ranking tournaments, numerous ski schools

and Oceania championships. Now sports people from throughout the country want to waterski in Ashburton. “Ours is the strongest club in New Zealand and is accessible to everyone,” Neil and Janeen said.

and fulltime water ski administrator. They’ve been judges, technical directors, administrators, run ski schools and taken national teams overseas. “It’s a huge part of our lives,”

Janeen said. “We’ve done a lot of travelling overseas with our children and every time we’ve gone, we’ve competed,” Neil added. “In the last 20 years we’ve skied in Europe, UK, China, Korea, Chile and other South American countries.” All five children, Karl, Hugh, George, Lana and Rachel, have been New Zealand champions with Rachel and Hugh achieving top 10 rankings in the world in their age group. With waterskiing being part of three generations – “the kids didn’t have much choice” – Neil believes they “still had to want to do it”. “They’ve got incredible talent and have benefited from training from overseas coaches in Florida, the home of waterskiing. “It’s a huge thrill to see them get the rewards in the sport. To be consistently good, requires a lot of hard work,” Janeen said. A further thrill has been for Neil and Janeen to be recognised as A grade judges over a 20-year period. In 2019 they received the Ken Hay Trophy for their services to waterskiing. “That’s the ultimate trophy. It’s special and brought tears to our eyes,” Neil said. When the nationals start in just under a fortnight all four boys (dad included) are competing in age group and men’s competition and then the open class. There are three events – tricks, jumps and slalom – with Neil and Karl fronting up in tricks and slalom and Hugh and George, the twins, in all three disciplines. Neil, at 64, is listed in the over-55 class, wishing he was a year older to compete in another category. In between times there’s the administration with Neil also balancing his work as Leech and Partners director during the pandemic. He has 48 staff working in teams, one week from home and the other in the office. Neil and Janeen are confident they’ll be rewarded with a sense of satisfaction and achievement when the nationals end. The vindication will follow. But there are no laurels to rest on. “When it’s over we’re going to keep pushing. We’re looking to further develop the site so we can host a larger competition,” they said. There’s something in the way, it’s called Covid-19 but, when the world is safe, they’re planning a huge event with hundreds of people both competing and viewing on the lakeside. “We want Lake Hood and Ashburton to be on the sporting map.”

Urban Ashburton

By Connor Lysaght

A

shburton as we know it has been constantly evolving ever since the construction of William Turton’s first accommodation house along the Hakatere Ashburton River in 1858. Rural has become urban, paddocks have become suburbs and buildings have been built, moved, modified and demolished. Ashburton was first surveyed by Robert Park in 1863 and from there our town began to grow. Generally speaking, urban Ashburton spread from the vicinity of Mona Square, northwards along East Street, and outwards along the side streets. Shops, offices, grain stores, agents and auctioneers quickly populated our fledgling central business district faster than you could say ‘Ashburton Borough Council’. Before we were even considered a borough, considerable growth had occurred. In 1903, a volume of the Cyclopedia of New Zealand covering the Canterbury Provincial District was published, which included an extensive section about Ashburton. Let’s take a look at how Ashburton was faring as a burgeoning town just after the turn of the century and see if we can draw any parallels between our past and our present.

Before we dive into the cyclopedia however, let’s consider the importance of this land before Pakeha settlement and its significance for takata whenua.

Our shared past Before towns and suburbs, this little slice of Aotearoa was more than capable of supporting growth and livelihood. Maori were the first to know the land that later came to be known as Ashburton District. This area contained a wide range of natural resources that were sustainably managed and collected, including seasonal foods and stone materials. Travel routes through the region were deliberately punctuated by stopping points which were in the vicinity of such resources, as well as water and shelter. Prosperity for takata whenua in this area and across Te Waipounamu (the South Island) relied on the important(knowledge of mahika kai, the concept of valuing the natural resources that sustain life.

Early urban landscape Ashburton in 1903 was described as having “the appearance of a healthy, prosperous, inland town, and that it is the centre of a rich agricultural district can be seen by glance at the large grain stores situated in

Morning Burnett Street (oil on canvas board), Henry Lowen-Smith. 1973. Ashburton District Council collection.

(Photo reference 03.1985.0908) the neighbourhood of the railway. The public buildings, and many of the business premises, are handsome and imposing, and the wide and well-formed streets, on market day especially, present a very busy aspect”. “The town is well built, and the streets and houses lighted with gas. With an ample supply of water always flowing in the side channels, the sanitary arrangements are excellent, and Ashburton is one of the healthiest places in New Zealand. “The local industries comprise a woollen factory, flour mills, a brewery, and the Fairfield freezing works.” As for Ashburton’s population at the time, the cyclopedia states that “the recorded population of the borough, within the statutory boundaries, 2322, does not represent the actual number of residents in the business centre of the district; if the immediate suburbs of Hampstead and Allenton were included, it would amount to at least 5000”.

The changing face of Ashburton Ashburton township grew up in a flash, and there is still more growing to be done. Various building and infrastructure projects in and around our town are set to change the face of the district drastically over the coming years. These changes include everything from new homes, public buildings and shops, to alterations to existing roads and intersections, moving the railway hub to Fairton and eventually, a second bridge across the Ashburton River. The revitalisation of Ashburton’s CBD was just the beginning! However, despite all this change, many things have stayed the same. Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum’s new Urban Ashburton exhibition was inspired by the many changes going on around us. Art Curator James Hope has used artworks, objects and photographs from the Art Gallery, Ashburton Museum and

Historical Society and the District Council’s collections to curate an engaging exhibition which is sure to incite both nostalgia and excitement. Urban Ashburton is open to the public until April 3, 2022.

question: What prompted the following words? Answer: A question. So the question and the answer are identical, but what is the question in question? It appeared in a motorsport quiz, and goes like this: The first Kiwi motorbike rider on the international scene raced in the 1910 Isle of Man TT, who was he? Answer: Alan Woodman. Next question Who was he? Even before the formation of the NZ Auto Cycle Union (NZACU) in 1916, motorcycle racing had its fair share of heroes in New Zealand some of whom ventured overseas, a major expedition especially when travelling to the other side of the world. Alan Woodman was the first New Zealander to compete in the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) races. From Blenheim Alan travelled to England to race at the famous

Brooklands board track, where he had success riding a V-Twin Indian. He then went to the Isle of Man, with the same bike, in May 1910. In those days, the race was run over the 15.85 mile St John’s Course. It was a demanding all-gravel track, with bikes having to be pushed up some sections.

Tragedy strikes

One section of the track had not been prepared correctly, and Alan punctured his front tyre. After repairs he set off again, but the tyre let go, throwing both Alan and his bike into a wall. His right leg was badly injured and eventually

was amputated near his hip. Bravely not letting the fact that he was missing one leg worry him, Alan attempted to race at the Isle of Man in 1911. His entry was refused, even after a petition was organised.

Back home

Alan returned to race in New Zealand. In the 1915/16 season he won the New Zealand Middleweight Championship, on a Triumph, in Christchurch. He set a motorcycle speed record, and claimed the New Zealand Lightweight Championship in the 1923/24 season. These races were on grass tracks at horse racing courses. It was said that Alan always did well on anti-clockwise tracks, where he could still use his left leg to slide.

A hero and legend

Alan Woodman certainly was one tough rider and a true legend who is well worthy of being recorded as the first person on the

NZACU Hall of Fame. We think Alan passed away aged 69 in 1958.

The Isle of Man TT

The first Isle of Man TT races took place in 1907, our Kiwi hero Alan Goodman was there just three years later. Early races were run in two classes – single cylinder and twin cylinder machines. The organisers also set regulations for saddles, pedals, mudguards and exhaust silencers. Crash helmets didn’t become compulsory until 1914. The first single cylinder race, run on the 15.85 mile St John’s Course, was won by Charles Collier riding a Matchless, while Rem Fowler on a Norton took the twin cylinder honours. In 1911, Isle of Man Tourist Trophy races moved to the Snaefell Mountain Course, and today’s motorcycles race are held over largely the same course. During the early years the TT course was little more than a horse and cart track, which included the odd gate between fields. It was the duty of the first rider round in the morning to open all the gates along the way, with the last rider responsible for shutting them again. Things have changed, and so have the machines. The Isle of Man TT races, often described as both nirvana for racers and fans as well as perhaps the toughest motorcycle races in the world, now feature a wide range of categories and challenges.

Logistical nightmare

D

iscussing this story, our sub-editor Steve, who has been to the Isle of Man TT races, said “Imagine the logistics Alan Woodman faced to get to the Island in 1910,” and “Wouldn’t those pioneer riders be amazed to know electric bikes are now being raced, and going just as fast as the petrol ones”.

Supertruck limited to 88km/h

W

hen RAM whipped the covers off the 1500 TRX, it seemed that the brand had won the truck game, no-one was going to trump this Hellcat-equipped supercharged

supertruck. Then Hennessey did exactly that, building upon the RAM’s 700hp and giving it a whopping 1000hp for good measure. And while only 200 of these trucks were slated for production, it seems that one enthusiastic Finland dealer managed to get their hands on one. The Hennessey TRX popped up on a Finnish vehicle sales website for the cool price of $400,000, which is around four times what you’d pay in America for a standard 1500 TRX from RAM. But despite paying almost half a million dollars for this truck, it’s next owner will only be able to

T

he Ducati Panigale family is the maximum expression of the continuous exchange of information and technology from the world of racing to production bikes and with each new version it continues its evolution year after year, just as it happens with the Ducati Corse prototypes. The “SP2” is the model with which Ducati brings to the peak the sportiness of the Panigale V4, the 2022 version of which has taken the most significant evolutionary step since its inception, improving in every aspect: aerodynamics, ergonomics, engine, chassis and electronics. The Panigale V4 SP2 stands out for its equipment with the typical technical specifications of the abbreviation “SP” (Sport Production) which are combined with all the improvements made by Ducati engineers on the Panigale V4 2022 to create the most high-performing Panigale ever. The “SP2” version has an even more powerful braking system, lightweight carbon rims, final drive and dry clutch inherited from the WorldSBK bikes, racing footpegs and a series of carbon components. The bike is also delivered with a kit for track use, which includes billet alumin-

use a quarter of its speedometer, due to a strange tax loophole that means a speed limiter has been fitted to it. Just 88km/h is all this RAM will be able to do on Finnish soil, as it’s basically the worst emitting vehicle of modern times. With a CO2 reading of 506g/km, it’d get hit a 44.8 per cent tax bill if it was imported as a passenger vehicle, and it weighs just a few kilos too much to be registered as a light commercial vehicle in the country. So to avoid the $180,000 tax bill, it has been registered as an ‘N2’ vehicle, and under EU laws, any N2 vehicles that are driven on the road have to be fitted with an 88km/h speed limiter. Hennessey’s TRX is quoted as having a 0-100km/ h time of just 3.2 seconds, so we can imagine that its new owner will be hitting the two-figure top speed in around two seconds.

ium caps for the removal of rear-view mirrors, kit for removing the license plate holder* and open carbon clutch cover*. The result is “The Ultimate Racetrack Machine”: a special model, ideal for the non-professional rider who wishes to experience track days challenging his own records. The Panigale V4 SP2 is characterised by the Winter Test livery, in which the matt black of the fairings is combined with the

new hot air Corse logo in the area of the extractors and by a red detail bearing the name of the bike, also present on the black saddle in double material. The heart of the Panigale V4 SP2 is the 1103 cc Desmosedici Stradale derived from MotoGP: a V4 with counter-rotating crankshaft equipped with a lot of torque from low revs and capable of expressing the racing soul of the bike on the track. For 2022, the Desmosedici Stradale has

matt carbon finish of the rims and wings, contrasting with the bright red accents and the brilliance of the exposed brushed aluminium tank. The wings with double profile design are embellished with the Italian flag which also appears on the official Panigale V4 R SBK. The lower part of the fairing is distinguished by the presence of the Ducati

improved with the introduction of dedicated technical elements, which have made it possible to increase power and improve throttle response. Thanks to these interventions and a new dedicated mapping, the Euro 5 version engine delivers 215.5 hp at 13,000 rpm, with a power increase of 1.5 hp over the Panigale V4 2021, which rises to 2.5 hp beyond the maximum

power peak at 14,500 rpm. To capitalise on the full potential of this engine, dedicated gear-by-gear torque curves and four different Power Modes (Full, High, Medium, Low) have been developed by Ducati. When used on the track, the performance of the Desmosedici Stradale can be further improved with the new full titanium Ducati Performance racing exhaust, developed in collaboration with Akrapovi and available as an accessory. This exhaust is equipped with high silencers alongside the tail and has been redesigned to increase performance and limit noise, offering everyone the opportunity to run with a full racing exhaust even in circuits with the most stringent noise limits. With this exhaust the Panigale V4 SP2 is lightened by 5 kg thus taking the dry weight of the motorcycle to only 168 kg. The Akrapovič exhaust also guarantees an increase in power of 12.5 hp, bringing the maximum value to 228 hp, while the maximum torque value rises to 131 Nm**. The Panigale V4 SP2 is also equipped with exclusive Brembo Stylema R® front brake calipers, which guarantee high braking power combined with exceptional consistency of performance even during a lengthy timed session without changes to the travel of the brake lever.

The weather is supposed to be excellent, so what better way to while away a Saturday afternoon than by heading down to the diamonds at Argyle Park and checking out the action. Senior Mixed play kicks off at 1pm.

Cricket

Not many chances to watch live local cricket remaining for the season, so why not head down to Temuka today and watch Tech try and work their way through to the final of the T20 competition. If they win, you can head back tomorrow too!

Petanque

The drive is on to introduce new players to the sport and it’s working. Want to find out what it’s all about, there’s competition petanque on tomorrow morning at the Ashburton MSA grounds on Racecourse Road. You won’t be disappointed.

Run over the course of the past few weeks, the initiative has seen good numbers from Under 14.5 through to Under 18 with both boys and girls getting involved each week. Hayley lifting toward a dream From little old Ashburton to the Commonwealth Games. That’s the path looking likely for weightlifter Hayley Whiting after a NZ record breaking performance recently. Matt Markham caught up with the 29-year-old to discuss the success and what lies ahead.

I

f you’d told Hayley Whiting seven years ago that she’d be representing New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games, weightlifting wouldn’t have been anywhere near the discussion for what sport she’d be competing in. Yet here the former Ashburton College student is – on the cusp of selection for Birmingham later this year after a golden performance in a recent international event which thrust her right into contention for selection. Technically it’s not confirmed yet, she’s qualified, but still needs selection. But word from inside New Zealand weightlifting circles is that it is just a mere formality, with Whiting expecting a decision to be announced within the next few days. And it’s only then that she’ll probably fully comprehend the enormity of what she’s achieved. “It’s a pretty tough thing to put into words to be honest, you know. “Six or seven years ago I would have never said I’d be going to the Commonwealth Games, let alone as a weightlifter – but here we are,” she said. It’s not a complete bolt from the blue though. The 29-year-old has been in and around the top of the sport in New Zealand for a few years now, and being in Birmingham this year was a goal expressed to the Guardian back in 2017. It’s more the way she achieved likely selection that has everyone talking. Weightlifting New Zealand held a New Zealand International event late last month in order to give competitors the chance to qualify for the Games, after many of the normal routes were cancelled or impacted on by Covid restrictions. “It was really the last pathway, with borders closed and events being cancelled, it’s been hard to get to where you need to be to just put yourself in contention.” Competing in the 87kg class, Whiting knew she was in for a battle with one of the sport’s best – Olympian, Kanah Andrews-Nahu. The pair locked themselves into an intense battle to the end. Andrews-Nahu took control late when she set a personal best and New Zealand record with a final clean and jerk weight of 122kg, meaning Whiting needed to lift three kilograms heavier to win – more than she’d ever lifted in clean and jerk before by five kilograms. “Looking back now, it seems

I’m a girl from Ashburton, it’s not a big sport at home, so it’s all pretty incredible

PHOTO KATHERINE NEILSON

pretty remarkable, I guess – but I actually felt pretty good about it when we decided to go for it. “I’d lifted 116kg in my first lift, then 120kg and both felt pretty easy. “The last lift is a bit of a blur to be honest, but when I watched the video back, I saw myself walk out onto the podium and I had a smile on my face so I was in a good head space.” By her own admission, in the past Whiting would have allowed the occasion to get to her a little bit, but there was none of that this time around as she successfully completed the weight to re-break the national record and by far exceed her own personal best. “There was a bit of disbelief there afterwards for sure, but it really did also feel like a bit of vindication for everything that’s happened to get to that point. “It was really satisfying once it had properly sunk in what had happened.” “I still need to stop and think about it sometimes, you know – it’s been a tough road to get to this point but to get the chance to go to the Commonwealth Games … I’m a girl from Ashburton, it’s not a big sport at home, so it’s pretty incredible.” Commonwealth Games selection will further an incredible rise up the ranks of weightlifting for Whiting who picked up the sport by chance while studying at Otago University. But more so the proof as to why her decision to up sticks and relocate to Mount Manganui back in 2002 was the best possible move. “I was in a bit of a rut really, there was a lot getting in the way and I was under-performing. “So, my coach Ray Everest, encouraged me to come north to work more closely with him and it’s really worked – I’ve improved my clean and jerk by 16kg since I arrived up here.” Whiting mixes her extensive training programme with working full time in her own physiotherapy studio. But the real hard work is only just starting to begin. She’ll head to Birmingham with a good chance of picking up a medal. She’s ranked fourth in the Commonwealth for her division currently and knows that if she can go there with the work behind her and the right frame of mind in place then she’ll do everything she can to make it a successful trip. And she’ll have all of Mid Canterbury behind her for support.

Matt Markham Mid Canterbury Cricket’s midweek senior competition finished up for the season during the week, and there was a distinct Allenton flavour to the final stage of the season. The two Allenton senior sides battled it out for supremacy in the final – a repeat of last year’s final as well, but this time it was Miyabi Top In Town Allenton who claimed victory over their Progressive Livestock Allenton clubmates. In an interrupted season, like almost every summer sport this year, the competition wasn’t without its struggles due to weather and Covid impacting on player line-ups – but everyone involved worked hard to get the competition over the line this week. The two leading sides dominated the competition, but surprisingly, given the final result, it was the Progressive Livestock Allenton side who walked into the playoffs with the best record. They won seven of their eight pool matches, while their clubmates won five of their eight. Gurmeet Singh was the competition’s MVP in the batting ranks with his seven innings resulting in 325 runs at an average of 65

OPINION

The day Warney came to the races Matt Markham

I

never really wanted to meet Shane Warne, at least until the moment it came to actually meeting him. A dislike born through years of watching this incredible cricket player taunt, destroy and conquer New Zealand batting line-ups had my hackles up. I wanted to taunt him, tell him where the changing sheds were and demand he knew that he was on my turf – Addington Raceway in Christchurch. In town as a paid promotional guest for New Zealand Trotting Cup Day in 2014, Warne swept into the room with an air of confidence and arrogance like no other. He was late, he should have been there about half an hour earlier – but a late night out in Christchurch after arriving the day prior had him a little behind schedule. It did nothing to enhance my desire to shake the guy’s hand. Working for Harness Racing

New Zealand at the time, I was one of a group of people who got to meet and greet the spin wizard before he was introduced to the waiting media scrum in the next room. Despite my earlier convictions about not wanting to meet one of the greatest cricket players to have ever stepped onto a pitch, from the moment we met and engaged in idle chit chat, I was enamoured with the guy. He was genuinely interested in what I did for a job, even taking note of a few selections so he could “have a bit of a flutter through the day,” and then he was off to his next assignment, a waiting media scrum. Following him through to the next room, it was something to behold as he completely took control of the room. After years of sitting through mindless media sit-downs with rugby players, this was the polar opposite. He played the media game to absolute perfection, feeding the frenzied media pack line after line as they eagerly ate up his every word. He told them by the end of the day he’d probably be dating at least 10 different women, and

Shane Warne with the New Zealand Trotting Cup king, Terror To Love in 2014. that because there was 20,000 people set to be on course, he’d expected to take at least 10,000 selfies. It was entertaining to watch an absolute masterclass in making

a room of people eat out of your hand. It was so good in fact that I quickly couldn’t even remember why I didn’t want to meet the guy in the first place.

And it’s that which probably sums up the great Warney best of all. A likeable rogue, who could have you feeling really pissed off one minute and then feeling like he was the greatest man on the planet the next. Far from conventional, and with his own unique style, he wasn’t your typical monotone sporting identity. He liked to talk about himself and the things that mattered most to him, and if you got the chance to listen to him on such a topic it was equally as enthralling as it was entertaining. I hadn’t thought too much about meeting Warney for a while, until of course the weekend, when it was announced he’d passed away suddenly aged 52. And instead of thinking about that blonde-haired tormentor of all things New Zealand and world cricket, that I wasn’t sure I wanted to meet, I instead remembered that really down to earth, incredibly confident but warm guy I’d met in a little room at Addington Raceway all those years ago. And to be honest, that’s a version I’d much rather remember.

Mid Canterbury’s horse and dog racing action

Sarah turns to local help to raise funds But one aspect of the meeting has stayed the same, and that’s two races for lady drivers as part of the Team Teal promotion, which raises funds and awareness for Ovarian Cancer.

Matt Markham With just a few race meetings remaining, Sarah O’Reilly will be hoping she can add a little more to the Team Teal kitty over the weekend and into next week. And tomorrow at Rangiora, she’s keeping it local to try and do her bit. O’Reilly will team up with Winslow horseman, Lawrence McCormick, in the Team Teal Lady Invited Drivers race for trotters, and the Jimmy Hooper-trained Just Michael in the pacing race at the Rangiora Racecourse tomorrow – where the Westport Trotting Club are hosts for the day. Racing this weekend was supposed to be held across the other side of the Southern Alps, but with the impact of Covid still lingering and the damage caused to the Buller region by recent floods, the two-day meeting at Westport and Reefton was shifted back over the Main Divide.

More than $10,000 has been raised over the past six weeks, with every win registered by a female driver adding money to the kitty, and O’Reilly has two decent chances to continue that trend tomorrow. Just Michael might well be the surprise packet of the day. He ran a bold race in a similar graded event for lady drivers earlier in the campaign when in a fresh state, looking a little unlucky in the run to the line. O’Reilly will need all her skill set on point to get the gelding home tomorrow from a tricky draw, but if he lands a little bit of luck early then there’s every chance he’ll be there fighting out the finish. The two combined for success late last year when winning on Methven Cup at Geraldine at a big price. In Vertigo, things

look very bright. The promising chestnut is in great form and comes off a good third last week at Addington Raceway behind some talented types. Her grass track form reads well, with her maiden victory coming on the green top at Methven, and she meets a very even field for her big band of owners tomorrow. Getting away safely from the stand will be the big assignment, but if the duo can land in a good position, the daughter of Peak’s turn of foot is devastating, and should see her well in commission. O’Reilly has five drives at the meeting, including locally trained runners Mo Cook for Simon Adlam and grass track toff Sister’s Delight for Michael Heenan. She also jumps aboard Buckskin who will be looking to continue his good run of form in the day’s feature event. The meeting is littered with locally trained horses, there are 19 in total from within the Mid Canterbury boundary set to take part.

Your Stars

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): A busy mind works with many of your intellectual pursuits, but socialising isn’t one of them. For that, you’ll get into a different mode, one where you’re calmly receptive to your environment and the people therein. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You feel like the hero of your story and so does everyone else. Understanding that people serve as their own protagonists will be central to the way you do lucrative business. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Successful spontaneity depends on someone, once upon a time, having had a plan that worked out so splendidly that now others can just show up to what they accomplished. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Play the long game. Perseverance will be essential to the victory. Through sheer determination, you’ll not only make a situation work for today; you’ll make it matter for years to come. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): It’s a little surprising when you don’t get the reaction you were going for. But this isn’t a movie set, and they didn’t get your script. You’ll roll with the improvisational moment and brilliance ensues. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You’re on when you need to be, and relieved when it’s time to power down. The ideal scenario would be to have congruence of purposes so there is no need to jolt into different modes. Work toward it. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Your fellow Libra, the poet E.E. Cummings famously said, “I’m living so far beyond my income that we may almost be said to be living apart.” A preventive financial review will make sure it doesn’t happen to you. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Material possessions are only important to you because of what they represent and how they enable you to do things with other people. It’s those relationships that really matter. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): The day vibrates with fresh potential. You only need to explore one new thing to get the energetic lift that a little novelty can bring. Interaction with an air sign will be fortunate. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Fewer opinions mean more room for peace and ease. Bonus: The gentleness of self-forgiveness isn’t even necessary if you have the gentleness of nonjudgment going for you. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Like having a partner who votes, eats or recycles differently, it seems your efforts are being cancelled out by someone close to you. Learn and grow through this relationship and its conflict. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Don’t hide your flaws today. Your lovability doesn’t hinges on the effect of everything coming together to make an impact that could only be made by you.
