Walnut Avenue/East Street intersection to be closed again The Walnut Avenue/East Street intersection will again be closed this Sunday. Waka Kotahi (NZTA) plans to complete the asphalt surfacing and will close the intersection from 7am to 7pm to carry out the work. Project manager, Albert Chan, advises the surfacing requires dry, warm conditions so the date might
be delayed a day if wet weather is forecast for the weekend. “There’ll be no vehicle access in or out of the intersection during Sunday,” Chan said. “Detours will be in place. Footpath access around the work site will be maintained.” The disruption will continue into next week when NZTA will lay an asphalt top coat on State High-
way One (West Street). The work is scheduled to take from Monday to Friday, March 25. “Two-way traffic on West Street will be maintained at all times however traffic lanes will shift locations as the work progresses,” Chan said. During the five days of work, Walnut Avenue West, Queen’s Drive and the Walnut Avenue rail crossing will
be closed night and day. Chan said detours will remain in place, footpath access will be maintained and a 30kph speed limited will be imposed to keep workers and the public safe. NZTA has confirmed that its night work, carried out during February, is completed in preparation for the surfacing/sealing work.

Relief at the pumps Daniel Alvey
“It’s a step in the right direction.’’ The Government also announced a halving of public transport costs from April 1 and road user charges adjustment for owners of diesel vehicles. The AA’s fuel spokesman Terry Collins, from Wellington, was happy the tax cuts were done in such a way that it would not affect funding for road projects nationally and that it had implemented them with such immediate effect. Collins said GST reduction would have taken longer to remove as legislation changes would be required. Collins said the fuel prices were still very difficult to predict, given crude oil price actually decreased in the past

New Zealand’s fuel price decrease only goes part the way to easing motorists’ pain. That’s the word from Ashburton-based AA Canterbury chairman John Skevington after yesterday’s fuel price cut announcement by the Government. It announced an immediate reduction in fuel excise duty and road user chargers by 25c a litre for a period of three months. The price drop meant motorists would save $17.25 on a 60-litre tank of fuel. In Ashburton, the pump price would drop from $3.079 to $2.829 a litre for unleaded 91. Skevington was pleased, but with one reservation. “It could have gone further,” Skevington said, adding that he would have liked to have seen some of the GST removed. Still, any reduction and instant savings presented relief for many Mid Cantabrians feeling the pinch at the pump, he said.
36 hours. However, it could rise again with war continuing in Ukraine, stretching global supply. The AA’s advice for motorists continues to be shop around, look for discounts, and try to make less trips.
‘It’s a step in the right direction, but it could have gone further’ – John Skevington
Health services deferred due to Covid impact Jonathan Leask The Canterbury DHB (CDHB) is escalating its Covid response as the number of cases continues to rise across Canterbury. Due to an increase in CDHB staff contracting Covid-19 or being household contacts and having to isolate, Canterbury’s Covid-19 emergency co-ordination centre controller, Dr Helen Skinner announced on Monday a reduction in some services to cope with the staffing shortages and increased Covid care requirements. Skinner said that in Ashburton, most specialist services are either being covered in Christchurch by the specialist teams or offered remotely, via telehealth for outpatient appoint-
ments. Two wards have also already been merged, as this requires less staffing resources,” she said. “Staff are remaining in Ashburton to cover roster requirements. All staff are advised about deployment opportunities and are able to support those shifts where they choose to.” People who test positive to Covid-19 and need hospital-level care will be admitted to Ashburton Hospital she said but if their care needs escalate, they will be transferred to Christchurch Hospital. The CDHB is utilising all available staff to cover gaps in rosters Skinner said but due to the CDHB staffing pressures the only operations still going ahead are for urgent surgery involving cancer care, accidents or major trauma surgery, and a small number of elective planned procedures. Skinner said some outpatient appointments are also being postponed this week.
“Urgent outpatient clinics such as dialysis will continue as will urgent and non-deferrable surgery and medical procedures.” Anyone whose surgery or outpatient appointment has to be deferred will be contacted by phone, Skinner said. “With so many staff away we are unable to maintain our usual levels of surgery and outpatient appointments.” Skinner apologised for the inconvenience and stress of people having a surgery or appointment postponed at short notice but she hopes “people appreciate the need to prioritise all our available people resources to ensure safe care for everyone”.

Computer failure sparks a career Daryl Holden
It’s funny how life-changing opportunities can sometimes present themselves in a weird, unexpected way. Mike Tarjomi knows all about that. Back when Tarjomi was still a lad in England, his interest in computers got him into a spot of bother one day, but it also provided a sudden inspiration that would shape his life. Tarjomi, now one of the big wigs for emerging national information technology and business support company Tribe, remembers it well. “Back in the olden days, when I was 16, I used to play about on my dad’s computer, and loaded something that completely killed the PC,’’ Tarjomi said. “We called a guy around, and my dad, being an accountant, was reluctant to pay to fix it, but needed it for his work. “I was so involved in helping the guy fix the machine that my dad paid him the money for the work and said to me: ‘from now on, you break it, you fix it’. So, I did.’’ From there, Tarjomi’s passion for all things computery led to a college degree and a profession in the IT management, information and computer technology world. “I basically turned my hobby into a job – and got paid for it. Thanks dad.’’ And now Tarjomi’s one of the best in the business, having owned an IT business in the UK before moving to New Zealand with his wife in 2008 in search of more opportunities and a better lifestyle. “We did our honeymoon in Australia and New Zealand, and New Zealand was perfect. As a big Lord of the Rings fan, it was also an opportunity to live in Middle Earth.’’ Christchurch is home, but he spends a lot of time in Ashburton where Tribe, set up in 2019, provides IT business support and technology advice to numerous Mid Canterbury businesses, including the Guardian. “For those that know me in Ashburton, I’m sure they will mention it’s been like a second home to me for many years
Tribe’s Mike Tarjomi: “For those that know me in Ashburton, I’m sure they will mention it’s been like a second home to me for many years now.’’ now,’’ he said. “When I started out as an engineer in New Zealand, I was based in Ashburton for a large portion of the week for many years, working alongside customers like ATS (Ashburton Trading Society), the Ashburton Trust and South Island Seeds. Over the years, we have built up many strong relationships in the region and love Ashburton for the more traditional, relationship-based business that takes place.’’ Tarjomi and his near 60-strong Tribe team, who have offices in seven locations nationally, are certainly making an impact, but it hasn’t been a walk through any cyberspace park though. Like everyone, Covid-19 has had what Tarjomi called a “noticeable impact’’ on their business.
“Whilst we are classed as essential workers and have been keeping the lights on for our customers, there has been a noticeable strain on our people and the unknowns that are part and parcel of the pandemic,’’ he said.
downs of the pandemic, Tribe was now going from strength to strength, Tarjomi said. “I think it’s similar to the times in the Christchurch earthquake where, during times of struggle, people really worked as a
so involved in helping the guy fix “ “Ithewasmachine that my dad paid him the
money for the work and said to me: ‘from now on, you break it, you fix it’. So, I did.’’
“With us only setting up Tribe officially in late 2019, our first year of trading was interrupted by lockdowns and a number of customers unable to continue trading at all.’’ But through the ups and
community, supported each other and did what was needed to make the best of a bad situation.’’ Supporting each other and working as a community are all messages Tarjomi and Tribe live
by, which is why they have been such devotees of the Guardian’s shop smart, shop local campaign. Though Tribe doesn’t have an office in Ashburton, their impact and importance to so many local businesses, especially now when IT support and direction was so vital, almost makes them as local and as important as anyone. And getting to know how so many Ashburton businesses operated and to understand what they had achieved in a very understated way had “regularly blown my mind’’, according to Tarjomi. “This region has so many established businesses that compete strongly on a global scale but remain under the radar. “It’s tall poppy avoidance to the maximum,’’ he joked.

Hinds School pupils enjoying the bike track.
New bike track for Hinds School
A $4272 donation from Anzco Foods has gone towards Hinds School’s new bike track. The school used the 2021 Sponsor a School Programme contribution to help with building costs for the now completed bike track, with Year 7 and 8 students working with Anzco on designing and constructing the facility. Hinds School office administrator, Karen Lovegrove, said the
children love it and ride the track on their bikes and scooters before school and during lunch break. “They bring their helmets and safety equipment to school. It’s great exercise for them,” she said. Lovegrove said the bike track has attracted interest from other Mid Canterbury schools and staff have passed on information about the Sponsor a School Programme.
The construction of the bike track was a major project for the school, and “was great senior students could play a practical role in design and construction”, Hinds School Charitable Trust treasurer Kate Moorhead said. “In previous years, donations from Anzco also helped Hinds School with costs associated with building an all-weather shelter over the new senior classroom.”

Last year, Anzco donated more than $106,000 to primary schools New Zealand wide through its programme and, since its beginning in 2011, it has donated $1.2 million to rural schools. The company works with local dairy farming families who nominate a rural primary school to receive a donation that is linked to supply. “Anzco Foods’ Sponsor a School
Programme provides the business with an opportunity to put funds back into rural communities and support the young people in our regions,” Anzco head of livestock Shannon Parnham said. “We’re always looking for more farmers to register for the programme because the greater the support we get from the rural community, the more we are able to contribute back to schools.”

Shrinkflation and disc golf Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR
F
rom the Hoops Handy Hints file today, here’s another heads-up for you! The changes are subtle and sneaky, but discerning shoppers have probably noticed lately that some products are shrinking in size or quantity – or both. Record inflation means we’re paying more for everyday purchases like paper products, shampoos as well as food and beverages. Companies can raise prices, and many are, but some decide to go this route: Charge customers the same price while offering less. Product downsizing, also known as “shrinkflation” happens during times of high inflation because companies are also paying more for raw materials, production and delivery costs, according to Edgar Dworsky of ConsumerWorld.org. He says shrinkflation is becoming increasingly prevalent these days, and his organisation has noticed it in toilet paper, biscuits, chocolate and conditioner. Experts say that companies do this because raising prices is a last resort, as it is very noticeable to consumers and can influence demand. On the plus side, it’s no longer considered a “cry for help” when you eat all the ice cream straight from the container! Something else that has certainly shrinkflated is the amount of petrol you get for $100 these days. Another addiction doing the rounds (it certainly is in our family) at the moment is Disc Golfism. This is an attraction to the game of disc golf that makes you play several times in a week and even twice in one day. We are going through a disc golf phase at the moment and even took advantage of the nice weather on Sunday and played both in the afternoon and again in the evening. It normally takes around an hour to complete the course and if you’re a little wayward like I am then you’ll walk around two and a half kilometres. Omicron hits EA Networks Centre Users of the EA Networks Centre are urged to check the facility’s website or Facebook page before visiting, as staff shortages caused by the Omicron outbreak continue to impact operating hours especially for the swimming pool. Ashburton District Council chief executive Hamish Riach said operating hours were being affected because staff across the sports centre were having to isolate, as required by Covid-19 management protocols. “We have many staff putting in extra hours to try and minimise disruption for our customers, but some things we can’t control and shortened hours are likely to be common. “We’re sorry if you’ve turned up for a casual early morning swim and found the pool not yet open, we are doing our best and the safety of customers and our staff has to be our top priority.” Riach says customers signed up to the fa-
cility’s database have been emailed about the possibility of fluctuating hours, but acknowledges not everyone might receive the alert. “As these changes can happen on short notice, checking the website or Facebook page before you visit is the best way to get the latest information and avoid disappointment.” The council’s other public facilities, including the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum, and the Ashburton Public Library, had so far been coping well with staff isolation requirements, however Riach warned that they could also be affected in the future. Please be patient with our staff during this time and check online before visiting. Lean on a gate; talk to a mate By Pat Deavoll “Lean on a gate and talk to a mate” was the call from rural health advocate and farmer wellbeing champion Craig “Wiggy” Wiggins. The 2021 Ravensdown Agricultural Communicator of the Year, who farms near Ashburton, has put the message out as a simple mental health campaign to help struggling farmers. At rural events farming folks were often seen leaning on a gate or a fence as they yarned to mates, Wiggins said. “We’ve sort of lost that, now that everyone is isolated a little bit more and we spend a lot of time on our phones and so on. “So, whether you lean on a gate and dial a mate, or whether you lean on a gate and just talk to your next-door neighbour, or even your staff members or even a family member – just take five minutes out of your day and ‘lean on a gate and talk to a mate’.” There is so much stress on farmers these days, Wiggins said. “The cost of fuel and fertiliser,

working as an MC, columnist, videographer, sports commentator, horse trainer, and farmer. His Facebook page “Whatever
with Wiggy” which advocates for farmer wellbeing has a monthly mental health forum. “I’ve been doing a fair bit of work around farmer support and helping people through some tough times, and especially through Covid,” he said. “We are really, really trying to bridge gaps and talk to people, but it’s just not getting through to some people, and I know that one of the things we can do is just keep checking on each other and talking to those people that you haven’t talked to for quite a while.” Wiggins had also played an important role in promoting farming and agribusiness as a viable career pathway for the next generation. In November 2020, he organised and hosted an online Careers Day and invited every high school to attend. Wiggins spent the day interviewing rural professionals and leaders about their roles and why the sector was a good career choice for students entering the workforce.

Accelerated pasture works a treat for Inverary Pat Deavoll
Bert Oliver of Inverary Station: We always had too little feed in spring when we really needed it and too much in summer when we didn’t need it. PHOTO SUPPLIED
The sale of an irrigated flat land farm used for wintering and finishing stock prompted Bert Oliver and John Chapman of Inverary Station to take a hard look at their 4250-hectare hill country property in the foothills of Mid Canterbury. Oliver is an equity shareholder in the property with Chapman. “We now needed to add value to the young stock on the station and our problem was not about having enough feed, but more about not having the right type of feed at the right time,” Oliver said. He said there were sunny and shady faces on most hill blocks, but the mainly low-quality browntop pastures led to too much poor-quality feed when it was not needed. This made it difficult to get enough high-quality pasture when
it was really critical. Inverary has about 3000 hectares of the harder hill country with not a lot of useful grazing and 1650 hectares of the easier hill country with better soils suitable for grazing. The station runs to 1500 metres above sea level, carried 5500 romney ewes and 1600 hoggets, 800 breeding cows and 450 yearlings. Oliver said when they lost the fattening property, they decided to go ahead with an accelerated pasture development programme. They needed pasture growth figures, which meant getting them themselves. They put out 35 pasture cages across the property and over three years, samples were taken every six weeks and analysed at Lincoln University. These results allowed them to develop a pasture growth profile across the entire property. “We always had too little feed in spring when we really needed it and too much in summer when we didn’t need it,” Oliver said. “By winter the surplus feed was so
indigestible that stock couldn’t eat it.” The pasture profiles showed that the only practical option to control summer surplus was to prevent it from happening in the first place, Oliver said. Records showed the spring production of legume-based pastures to be double that of high-quality grass paddocks and they came earlier in the season. The success of the legume systems in the easier country pointed towards it solving the feed supply problems in the hill country. This led to Inverary pioneering a “spray and delay” technique on steeper hill faces using residual sprays to remove the existing pasture. While the blocks were out of production for up to 18 months, the fallow period promoted seedbeds and good soil moisture levels for growing red, white, and caucasian clovers. For Oliver and Chapman, taking the time to look closely at the farming system, plus discovering the benefits of legumes, had been deeply satisfying.
Ashburton dairy farm an entrant in enviro awards An Ashburton farm is one entrant of four in the 2022 Ballance Farm Environment Awards. Flemington Farm, owned by Phillip and Jocelyn Everest and Paul Everest and Sarah Hayman is a dairy and beef property of 255 hectares effective. Since 1989, the Everests have expanded this property developing a sustainable dairy and beef farm. In 2010, they developed the property into a dairy farm and milk 750 cows on a predominantly pasture-based system. When they established the 225ha milking platform that year, the best technology of the day was incorporated considering both
labour and the environment. The goal was to have one person in the shed each milking, minimise water use, and treat effluent as a fertiliser. The Everests are also involved in several catchment and district initiatives that are largely focused on improving the environment. Other entrants in the awards include dairy and beef farmers Geoff and Rochelle Spark of Torlesse Farm. Jo and Lachie McKenzie of Table Top Station, operate a sheep and beef property near Kurow. The fourth entrant is Matt and Claire Smith of Caberfeidh Station of the Hakataramea Valley.

If you employ it again, this time around it won’t take nearly as long. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): The easiest debt problem to solve is financial. The math involved in emotional and karmic debts takes a wizard to solve. Luckily, you have some wizarding powers to wield today. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Maybe you can’t get everything on your list right now, but ideas are more valuable than dollars. Wanting will stimulate your creativity and you’ll come up with more ways to bring your wishes to hand. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Even though you’re focused on the positive, you see what needs improvement. Record these insights and, for now, keep them to yourself. Circle back to fixing things after you’ve played to the strengths. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): When someone pops to mind, you wonder if you have also floated into their consciousness and if you are appearing there on a regular basis. To make an impression is to be two places at once. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): There are times when too much repetition gets tedious, but right now it’s a great help. People need to hear things a few times to understand. Tell your story again. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): In the same way that a person’s ideal weight isn’t necessarily their real weight, standards held in theory are not really standards unless they are met. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Doing things together has an impact. It’s true that you’ll have to compromise, but the progress you make after adding a person or two to your project will be worth it. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): To compensate for a thing is to draw attention to it. This doesn’t have to be an embarrassment. Face and embrace all that you lack or perceive yourself as lacking. Be proud of the work you do to make up for it. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Pace yourself socially. You don’t need everyone to know everything about you upfront. It’s more exciting to give them just enough so that they crave the next detail.

Petrol ... it’s time to look elsewhere
T
alk about angst. Those whirring digits at the petrol pump, and record fuel prices, has everyone worrying, and especially now. Fortunately, yesterday we received some good news when an under-pressure Government stepped up to help Kiwis at the pump by announcing a reduction in fuel excise duty and road user charges by 25c a litre for a period of three months. Nice move but it had to happen. The change came as Labour faced telling pressure over the cost of living, thanks to inflation, the war in Ukraine and with petrol soaring past $3 a litre. Oh, and that little thing of Labour suffering its worst result in a TVNZ poll since being elected would also have forced them into fuel price action.
Daryl Holden Make no mistake about that. It’s how the political world works because public concern about fuel prices has been the talk of the country for weeks. Locally, it was perfectly captured on our popular Ashburton Guardian Facebook page on Friday when a video post, showing queues of motorists lined up at a local Mobil station, reached 10,000 followers. That’s a lot, peeps, and shows the concern and interest in what really is a pain in the gas. One poor bloke on Facebook probably spoke for many when he said, part humorously per-
it’s totally sensible to start seriously “ ...looking elsewhere for something to meet our transport needs ...
haps, that “$20 won’t even start my car soon’’. Well, tighten those seatbelts even further, and hold on to your petrol-buying cash, because motor industry experts are convinced that prices are now racing towards $4 a litre. They believe that the latest influence on pain at the pump – Russia’s military invasion and square off with Ukraine – could well inflict much, much more than the punishing oil prices hitting Kiwi motorists’ pocket now. There’s no doubt that the Russian invasion has caused
mayhem with fuel prices. Russia produces just under 10 per cent of the world’s crude oil, which is millions of barrels daily. Not a problem usually, but with President Vladimir Putin announcing a freeze on Russian exports, in retaliation for tough sanctions applied to his nation by numerous countries, the supply of oil has dropped big time. Yes, oil-rich countries in the Middle East could increase their production to help meet the shortfall, but that won’t happen overnight. So where does it leave us? Surely it must provide further
motivation for real changes to be adopted with our transport decisions. In fact, it’s totally sensible to start seriously looking elsewhere for something to meet our transport needs and we have options obviously. Electrified cars – whether in wholly electric or plug-in and hybrid forms – are already quietly and commonly moving among us. And New Zealand’s EV fleet is certainly expected to continue to grow as long as batteries keep improving. We also hope that new technology around hydrogen could be the answer for bigger, heavier vehicles. Simply, we must come up with alternatives soon because, even allowing for the short-term fuel price relief announced by the Government, something has to change. That must be obvious to everyone.

Viv’s little delight does it again Matt Markham You can’t beat the feeling of winning a race, and Methven’s Viv Barrett has been all smiles since Sunday. The popular and well-known identity picked up another owning success on Sunday at the transferred West Coast meeting at Rangiora, when his bonny little mare Sister’s Delight was victorious for local trainer Mike Heenan and driver Sarah O’Reilly. And no-one really expected it to happen. “It was a bit of a surprise to be honest, she was having her third race within a week,” Barrett said. “But when she got a nice drag into the race, I thought she might have been a bit of a chance – she’s just such a determined wee bugger, she doesn’t like horses getting past her and she fought really strongly to the line. “We were rapt afterwards; it was a great moment.” The only disappointment, if you could even call it that, was that the win didn’t come on the Coast. Sister’s Delight had made the West Coast a happy hunting ground for Barrett, having won at the Reefton meeting on the previous two years, and if the races had been at Reefton on Sunday where they were scheduled it would have been three in a row. “It was a shame for the club, and it would have been nice to have won there three years in a row – but we got to race, which was the main thing.” Barrett has dabbled in horse ownership for a number of years now, and enjoyed what he calls moderate success along the Sister’s Delight and Sarah O’Reilly drive for victory at Rangiora on Sunday. way. Good trotter Superfast Lad gave him some great thrills before his retirement with Buckskin to cap a “I can’t say enough about them – I’m just last year, and Westburn Courage was good as pleased for them when we win a race as good weekend in enough to win five before being sold to the I am for myself.” the sulky, after North Island. also reining Having O’Reilly sitting in the bike “I’m not in it to make money, it’s not behind his mare was also special home a winner about that. on Saturday at for Barrett, given her Mid Canter“I just really enjoy being able to go out bury connection. He went to $9000 to purchase a Sweet Lou filly from the famous Shard Farm draft, and getting her to the races will be even more special given he’s brought in a long-time friend to share in the ownership. “Pup Chamberlain has come in on her with me. “I’ve known Pup for years and he asked about it. “We’ve never raced a horse together before, so it will be quite nice to do that with him.” For now, though, all the racing talk is about Sister’s Delight in the Barrett household. And Barrett’s hoping he won’t have to wait too long to experience the thrill of winning a race again.

Skiers in fine fettle ahead of National Championships Matt Markham As they gear up for the national championships on familiar waters later this month, Mid Canterbury waterskiers are showing they’re in good form with strong results at the Regional Championships on the weekend. The event, held on Lake Crichton on Saturday and Sunday saw the local contingent right among the action. It’s a strong pointer towards perhaps some national glory coming the way of the Lake Hood Water Ski Club when the National Championships begin at Lake Hood on March 22. Gavin Green had a great time on the water – including smashing a New Zealand Senior Men’s jump record on Sunday. Beating the record on his first jump with a 26.2 metre effort, he then extended it on the third to 26.6m to add to his ever-growing list of achievements. As well as that effort he also equalled his own slalom record. George Donaldson showed he’s right on track for the nationals with a clean-sweep of events across the weekend. His efforts saw him crowned the Canterbury Regionals Champion of Champion over all age
groups. He won the men’s open slalom trophy, as well as tricks, jumps and the overall title. There’s a real battle royale emerging in the junior boys category out of the Lake Hood Water Ski club, with three locals really pushing each other to the limit. Brothers Quinn and Jett Jansen along with Zac Bainbridge continue to dominate events, with each of the three taking home a title on the weekend. Quinn was strong across all facets winning the overall title as well as taking out jumps while Bainbridge claimed second overall and picked up the slalom title while Jett was third overall and won the tricks title. It’s a three-way battle which will undoubtedly see the trio locking horns again in a few weeks on their home lake. In the junior girls category, the results kept coming. Katrina Wallis picked up the top prize for winning overall, taking out all three disciplines, heading off her twin sister Genevieve who was second overall, picking up a personal best score in tricks. Stella Clyne took out third place overall with good consistent efforts across all three events, while Margo Ainsworth, Breanna Turnball and Maddison Turnball all performed well picking up placings or personal best scores during their time out on Gavin Green on his way toward a NZ record on Lake Crichton on the weekend. Covid struck down the Tech Stags again and kept them from competing in the South Canterbury Cricket T20 finals on the weekend. PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN
Frustrating end to season for Tech Matt Markham The battle to keep Covid out of the camp for another week was a bridge too far for the Tech Stags on the weekend, when they had to withdraw from the final weekend of South Canterbury Cricket. With a second wave of the pandemic ripping through their playing roster, the Tech side were left with no option but to withdraw from their semi-final clash against Temuka on Saturday – the second weekend in the past month where they’ve been unable to pull together 11
players to don the colours and play for the club. It meant there was no chance of making it double delight for the side this year, after they won the 50-over format competition earlier this year. That gave Temuka a clean run through to the major semi-final on Sunday morning, where they took on Pleasant Point, who had been defeated by Celtic on Saturday. Point made light work of their northern counterparts to book a final berth on Sunday afternoon against Celtic. Batting first in the final, Celtic put on 144-9 from their 20 overs, and they ripped through the Point batting line-up to roll them for 67 in the 47th over and claim the title.
Star Mid Canterbury female tennis player, Tessa McCann was unable to help her Cashmere side to victory in the final of the Tennis Canterbury Premier women’s competition on the weekend. McCann, who added another Mid Canterbury Gala Cup singles title to her impressive list of achievements in the sport earlier this year, had been in good form all season for her Cashmere side, where she played as the team’s No.1 seeded member. In seven appearances before the weekend, she claimed four singles victories and an even more impressive doubles record of five victories – many alongside team-mate Ruby Young. On Saturday, however, up against a rampant Burnside Park Bishopdale side who had only lost one match all season, the mountain proved just a little too tall for McCann and her side. They lost the tie 2-4 overall, with McCann losing her singles match to the very talented Jade Feneon in straight sets, before McCann and Young were beaten by Feneon and her sister, Joelene in the doubles as well. Cashmere’s effort to finish second, however, is still a commendable one, especially considering the tightness of the competi-

The Premier men’s competition still has two weeks of play remaining before they reach the finals stage of the season – the same with both Division One and Division Two – all of which Mid Canterbury have teams in.

History-making success for local tennis side Matt Markham In December Mid Canterbury Tennis set a goal and then on Sunday, they achieved it. After getting their hands on the coveted Shirley Dalzell Memorial Trophy last year, it became a determined goal within Mid Canterbury tennis circles to ensure the trophy remained at the Braided Rivers Community Trust Tennis Centre for the off season. It had never occurred before with the challenge trophy; they’d held it – but never during the off season, which just happens to be the only way to get your name engraved on the trophy. But a victory against neighbours Ellesmere on Sunday meant it was mission accomplished. The Shirley Dalzell was established as a challenge trophy over 20 years ago, competed for between five sub association senior sides; Mid Canterbury, Malvern, Ellesmere, North Canterbury and Christchurch City. Mid Canterbury beat Malvern before Christmas to lift the trophy, needing just to defend it against Ellesmere on the weekend to keep it for the winter, and they did exactly that with a powerful victory. The 16-strong contingent of players took to the courts playing in both men’s and women’s doubles and then mixed doubles to determine a winner, with the 16 matches across the day seeing Mid Canterbury emerge on top 9-7 winners.

Dianna Leonard and Jane Brosnahan, Karen Tait and MaryAnne Martin, Erin Tasker and
Sue Letham and Lynda Scott and Robyn Wall all were victorious. It was a little tough in the men’s side of the competition though, with only Rhys Cromie and Lee Gilbert combining to win their match, with Ellesmere claiming the other three matches. With a one game lead head-
ing into the mixed doubles, Mid Canterbury pulled out all the stops. Cromie and Leonard, Gilbert and Brosnahan, Tait and Pete Kirwan and Phil Crozier and Scott claimed victory to split the overall round and see Mid Canterbury home by two matches.

Broomhall and his co-markers found the front mid race and set a solid tempo throughout, ensuring it was going to take a big effort from the chasing bunches to haul them in. Broomhall won the two-up sprint to take the win, with second placegetter Don Sutton laying down his best race of the season leading into next week’s finale. Jelle Hendrikson will be happy with his days work claiming the third place spoils. Simon White produced a storming ride to lead the chasing group in to secure fourth spot. Zoe Spillane covered the distance in 30.44 to claim fastest time honours and fourth place. Flynn Turnbull charged into fifth place. A good field of Division 2 riders went to the line, with Nigel Leary staying away to take the win from Kenny Johnson, and Merv Grewar. Puckett to start Super Double Rugby Aupiki opener delight Matt Markham
Matt Markham Mid Canterbury’s own Mel Puckett will play her part in a slice of history tonight, when the Blues run out in Hamilton for their first match in Super Rugby Aupiki. Puckett – a Canterbury Farah Palmer Cup representative – signed with the Blues franchise for the inaugural season of the competition on the back of a huge season last year, in which she made massive ground up following a serious injury which had her sidelined for over a year. With competition in the halfback spot intense within the Matatu camp, including Black Ferns player Kendra Cocksedge, Puckett elected to look elsewhere to play super rugby, and landed with the Blues. And tonight, she’ll run out onto the paddock and make her debut with the No.9 jersey on her back. It’s been a frustrating few weeks for the Blues outfit, who were struck down by Covid and missed last week’s opening round, but they’re keen to get out on the paddock tonight and Puckett will relish the opportunity to steer the team around the paddock. They’ll be up against it with the Matatu having experienced the rigours of super rugby last week, when they fell to Chiefs Manawa last Thursday night in a gripping encounter. The Blues will be without some of their big name players for tonight’s clash – but still boast six Black Ferns and two National Sevens players for their season opener.
Mel Puckett will start at halfback for the Blues tonight in their first game in Super Rugby Aupiki, Both captain Aroha Savage and Eloise Blackwell are unavailable for the match. Experienced midfielder Ruahei Demant takes over the captaincy role for the match, with Black Fern props Krystal Murray and Aldora Ituna set to lead from the front. For Matatu vice-captain Kendra Reynolds will make her Super Rugby Aupiki debut on Tuesday night alongside Bay of
Plenty team-mate Natalie Delamere. Captain Alana Bremner will switch to No.8, with Reynolds at openside for the match in Hamilton against the Blues women. Lucy Jenkins moves to blindside, and Australian international Arabella McKenzie gets the chance to start at first-five. The match tonight will be held at FMG Stadium with a 7.05pm kick off.
There was double delight for two Country Mid Canterbury sides on the weekend in Canterbury Tennis. Mid Canterbury’s Division One team kept their good record going with victory over Shirley on Sunday morning to retain their rank of second in the overall standings, with just two more weeks of round robin remaining. Jason Feutz and Connor Brosnahan led the charge, combining to win their doubles match before both picking up good wins in the singles. Jake Parsons, playing as the team’s No.1 was also victorious in his single match-up to secure victory for the team. They play middle-of-the-table Edgeware this coming weekend, before a top of the table clash with Elmwood in the last round. Elmwood were beaten for the first time on the weekend, losing to Burwood Park. The Division Two side also picked up a win, which sees them right in contention for a playoff spot. They beat Halswell in a very tight encounter. Mid Canterbury lost both doubles matches, but bounced back with wins to Riley Breen, Joshua Gilbert and David Withell in the singles, to square things up at three matches each. Both teams picked up six sets during the morning’s play, meaning it went down to games, and the Country Mid Canterbury side won 50, one game more than Halswell, to take the win. They also have two weeks of play remaining and a very tight points table around them, so will be keen to get two more wins on the board to assure themselves a spot in playoffs tennis at the end of the month.
Covid forces rugby start date change Matt Markham Hopes of an uninterrupted rugby season at senior level have been punctured before the season has even begun in Mid Canterbury. As Covid’s prevalence in the Mid Canterbury region continues to grow and seemingly prosper, the impact it is having on pre-season preparations for teams and clubs around the district has been tough over the past few weeks. Many teams were scheduled to begin campaigns with preseason games over the weekend, but all

were either cancelled or postponed, and a decision has now been made to push the start of the Country Combined competition between Ellesmere, North Canterbury and Mid Canterbury clubs back a week to April 9, instead of the original start date of April 2. “It’s a tough time for everyone at the moment, and who knows what might come in the next few weeks,” Mid Canterbury Rugby chief executive, Tanya Dearns said. With a lot to take into account, including the local Watters Cup competition at the other end of the season, and also allowing for satisfactory lead in time for the Mid Canterbury Heartland side before their campaign, Dearns said there was some wriggle room available still. “We’ve got options on the table should we have to revisit the starting date of competitions, but there’s not a lot there if things continue to get tougher. “There’s potentially another week or so in which we could still get the competitions played. “At the moment it’s an evolving situation, but the discussions are happening.” While Mid Canterbury teams won’t play on April 2, both Ellesmere and North Canterbury will engage in their own union competitions on that date before the

Some clubs around the district are still hopeful of getting on the paddock this week and having a hit-out in a pre-season match, but clubs spoken to by the Guardian over the weekend are uncer-
tain as to whether or not that will be possible, with limited numbers at training due to self-isolation rules, and clubs across the Canterbury region being in the same boat.
