news organisations who step up “ Local for their community, like the Ashburton Guardian, are true treasures
Facebook recognises Ashburton Guardian The Ashburton Guardian’s reputation as one of New Zealand media’s “true treasures’’ has seen it accepted on to an international Facebook programme. The Guardian is one of just 13 New Zealand news organisations and publishers, who will be part of the Meta (new name of the company that owns Facebook) Aotearoa audience development accelerator programme. The programme, funded and facilitated by Meta, is part of its push to help newsrooms with their digital transformation and to improve their sustainability in an ever-changing media landscape. The Guardian would receive world-class coaching and guidance in a 100-day programme and a significant grant to allow it to
introduce and implement online changes. Meta Australia and New Zealand’s head of news partnerships, Andrew Hunter, said the Guardian stood out for its passionate community focus over such a long period of time. “Local news organisations who step up for their community, like the Ashburton Guardian, are true treasures,” Hunter said. “They are the types of organisations that are crucial for fostering community and enhancing democracy in Mid Canterbury and throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.’’ Hunter said Meta deeply believed in partnering newsrooms like the Guardian. “… to assist them in grasping
the opportunities of digital technology so they can build on their proud history and be well positioned for the future. “We are thrilled to have the Ashburton Guardian in the accelerator programme, which will include a digital innovation grant at its conclusion, and (we) can’t wait to see how they progress.” Five New Zealand media industry experts, alongside Meta journalism project heads, were impressed with what they called the Guardian’s “very thoughtful’’ submission to be part of the programme. Guardian managing-editor, Daryl Holden, said being accepted on to such a world-class programme was a golden opportunity for the business, its readers and
Facebook followers. “The Meta team obviously recognised our connection with our community and especially our growing online arm,’’ Holden said. “Our Facebook page has the biggest reach and number of followers in Ashburton by some distance. Savvy local businesses and organisations, like the Braided Rivers Community Trust Ashburton, are starting to realise how they could use that unmatched reach and following by partnering with us for their benefit. Being part of this programme would further develop those sorts of opportunities.’’ Holden said the programme acceptance also highlighted how highly the Guardian was viewed well beyond Mid Canterbury.
“Since 1879, we’ve been the true local voice of Mid Canterbury,’’ Holden said. “No-one can deny that. We’ve been here through thick and thin, we’ve stood up for our community when it’s been needed, recently evidenced by the shop and love local campaign we drove to support Mid Canterbury businesses that had been doing it tough over the past two years. “Now Meta, for all its worldwide success and digital dominance, has recognised and rewarded that community engagement. “I can’t emphasise enough just how important this is for us, our advertisers and readers. “It really could be a game changer.’’

Council trims rates plan; lands at 9.4% Jonathan Leask The Ashburton District Council is proposing a 9.4 per cent average rate increase in its “no-frills” annual pan for 2022-23. The council is planning to defer some projects as it deals with the rising cost of doing business and maintaining a high level of service for ratepayers. Councillors have been working on the annual plan in a series of workshops over the past month to discuss budget challenges because of Covid-19 and inflation. “We’ve spent a lot of time discussing how we can fund the things our ratepayers want and expect when the cost of doing business has risen so dramatically because of supply chain issues and inflation,” Brown said. “The annual plan will be no-frills about spending on projects we have to do, while maintaining day-to-day services.” The draft plan now shows the coun-
cil will need to collect $44.265 million in rates across the district, compared to $40m collected this financial year. As well as deferring the over-$450,000 revamp of the Balmoral Hall, the council is also proposing to defer building a new access road to the Ashburton Domain. “We have been able to find some savings across council operations, but other work has been dictated by Government,” Brown said. “Ashburton is facing the same economic factors that the whole world is navigating, so this budget is about balancing needs and being realistic.” He said the council had heard residents’ concerns about roading and plans to use $2m from reserves to boost maintenance and improvements on the sealed and unsealed network. The overall rates increase has landed at around 9.4 per cent, Brown said, but it would vary across the district depending on where ratepayers lived and how much their properties had been affected by recent Government revaluations. The council will consider approving the draft annual plan at its meeting on April 6.

Covid cases continue to climb By Jonathon Leask
(147) when the CDHB began releasing case numbers at a district level. Rangitata MP Jo Luxton said “there’s no doubt the next few weeks are going to be tough, but what we’re seeing is what we expected”. As New Zealand marked two years of living with Covid-19 yesterday, the Ministry of Health reported 14,633 new cases in the community.
Cases of Covid 19 in the Ashburton District are expected to climb this week. The Canterbury District Health Board reported that Ashburton had 102 new cases in the community, as of Monday morning. That had the total number of cases in the district rise to 352, meaning cases have doubled since Friday
Covid delayed the 2020 presentations, but they all made their way to schools last month. This year 600 books were ordered, primarily written by New Zealand authors, which Rotary President, Leicester Wilson, said is “one of the ways we can distribute books back to the community.” “We receive great feedback from the schools and they’re grateful every new entrant receives a book from us,” he said. “For some, it’s the first personal book they own.” “I’m sure it will help their love of reading as they grow older.” Bungard has called the concept “a fantastic programme” and said the books are “real quality, many having won awards”. “All the students love the books and the welcome certificate which Methven School gives them.” The Rotary Club of Ashburton will also deliver 60 books to the maternity wing at Ashburton Hospital as part of their Books for Babes project.
A personal book for new entrants “sets them off on the right start for reading.” Methven School is delighted to again receive books for every new entrant which administrator, Michelle Bungard, says is “an amazing welcome to the school.” The books for new entrants go to every primary school in Mid Canterbury, provided by the Rotary Club of Ashburton from Bookarama proceeds. The club carries out a reconnaissance at the end of each year to find out how many new entrants will attend the 20 schools in Mid Canterbury, then orders them ready for delivery in the new year.
In Ashburton’s favour is high vaccination rates. According to the CDHB, over 95 per cent of people in the Ashburton District have received their primary course of the Covid vaccine and 71 per cent of those who are eligible have now received their booster shot.

Now I can hear the sermon Malcolm Hopwood Parishioners with impaired hearing will benefit from a Braided Rivers Community Trust grant. The trust, in its first round of grants for 2022, has allocated $5000 to the Ashburton Methodist Parish for audio/visual equipment. The grant will meet the cost of a loop system to be introduced to Baring Square Methodist Church for people with impaired hearing. The church is currently being restored following earthquake damage with work on replacing the near 100-year-old tile roof with long run iron, due for completion mid-year. Judith Crozier, a member of the Church Restoration Committee, is delighted with the grant and said it will help to fund its audio-visual equipment which is budgeted to cost $70,000. The equipment includes a sound system and screen for images, orders of service and other uses. “It’s wonderful Braided Rivers Community Trust has supported our application,” she said. “We’ll continue to make application for the shortfall. “When the church reopens towards the end of the year, we want it to be available to the community for productions, concerts, lectures and meetings. It’s ideally placed as a venue alongside the council’s civic centre and library.” The restoration, costing more than $3 million, was scheduled for completion at the end of last year, but was delayed by water damage to the roof and walls during the 2021 floods in May and vandalism over Christmas. The completion date is now sometime later this year. In the meantime the church is holding online services and will return to Paterson’s Funeral Chapel when the worst of Omicron is over.
Methodist Restoration Committee member, Judith Crozier, is pleased with financial support for Baring Square Church from Braided Rivers Community Trust.

Decimated events sector will bounce back Jonathan Leask It’s been a rollercoaster ride, but the Braided Rivers Community Trust Event Centre says it will come out the other side. Event centre general manager Roger Farr said it has been a challenging time for the events industry, which had been decimated in the past two years under Covid-19 restrictions. The Government’s level 4 restrictions in August caused 52 events to be cancelled or postponed through to December, “which is huge for us,” Farr said. “The income that we have had has just been decimated.” Government wage subsidy and resurgence payments, reduced staff hours, fundraising events, and Lion Foundation support meant they will still finish the year in “a relatively strong position”. “The hard part is going to be the next six months. “Looking at the calendar going forward, it’s not looking pretty.” With domestic and border restrictions set to ease, there was light at the end of the Covid tunnel, but there remained plenty of uncertainty for the industry. Farr said it would be a case of wait and see as the restrictions ease. “Restarting the events sector will take a while, it doesn’t happen overnight.” As they await the return of touring acts, Farr said they would be looking locally to fill the void. Event centre chairman, George Brown said its budget for the next financial year is based on the hope Covid restrictions continue to diminish. “It’s very difficult to estimate for the year ahead,” Brown said.
Roger Farr “Basically we don’t have a clue what’s going to happen from July onwards.” The event centre, a council funded agency, is seeking a 4 per cent increase to its grant to cover the changes to minimum wages. Brown said it’s the first time in three years it has requested an increase to its grant and the event centre had “only got through because of the substantial wage subsidy”. Its biggest production was to be Jesus Christ SuperStar however after being initially postponed seven days out from opening last year it was cancelled in January. Farr said informing the cast and crew of the cancellation was “one of the hardest things” given the hours and time spent preparing for the production. The cancellation was made easier he said as they were successful in applying to the Government’s arts and culture event support scheme, providing funding to offset unrecoverable costs associated with the production of up to $62,000. It is currently working through that application. Refunds were also being processed for the around 1800 tickets which Farr said was a humbling experience as $7000 had been donated from ticket holders rather than accepting the refund.

Igniting a passion for leadership Maddison Gourlay Year 7 and 8 pupils at Longbeach School are taking on a new initiative to ignite a passion for leadership. Senior school teacher Harriet Sutton saw that there weren’t many kids wanting to go into leadership. “I wanted to ignite that spark and shake things up a bit, and make things more exciting,” Sutton said. “We had student council and house leaders but we just needed more opportunities.” For the small rural school with around 200 pupils, head students were something that seemed too big, Sutton said. “I just wanted to give the kids leadership roles they were excited about,” she said. “We have kept the house leaders’ roles as they are very popular with the kids and they get right behind the house events.” There were seven Longbeach ambassadors named at a ceremony on Friday. All pupils that wanted to put their name forward for a position had to fill out an application, and do a five minute presentation about themselves in front of staff. “The staff voted on who they thought would be the best for

Don’t be pierced off Lili Haydon Body piercing work is off limits for now. That’s the call from Time for Diamonds’ owner Nicola Crossan after her business opted to stop offering body piercing services because of a health risk around growing Omicron case numbers in Ashburton. As of yesterday at 8am, Ashburton had 352 confirmed cases in the community, according to the latest Canterbury District Health Board figures. That was enough to force Time for Diamonds to suspend piercing work. Most body piercings take only a few minutes, but according to Crossan they are dealing in close contact with the customers for a length of time during the whole appointment. “It’s not a two-minute job,” said Crossan, who made the decision to keep her staff and the community safe. Although Crossan said body piercings were not a huge part of her business, it was the time of year many that children, especially, come in to get their ears pierced before the sports season starts.

Concert postponed The MSA Men’s Choir has delayed its 10th anniversary celebrations until later in the year. Choir president, Rodger Letham, said the choir had scheduled a combined concert with Ashburton College choirs and the National Male Choir on June 25, but, because of uncertainty due to Covid, has postponed the event until later in the year. “Members are looking forward to resuming their singing as soon as possible,” he said.
Homework hub
Crossan had already had to turn a handful of customers away who, had showed up hoping for the piercing service. And with foot traffic coming to a halt, it is tough for many businesses to say no to customers. “Everyone we have turned away has been understanding,”
Crossan said. Time for Diamonds’ move is the latest Covid-19-enforced operational adjustment by Ashburton businesses to get through the Omicron surge. Last week, one of Ashburton’s more popular restaurant and bars bowed to Omicron by shut-
ting down its dining in service. Cleavers Corner Gastro Pub would now offer only a contactless pickup and delivery food service while Omicron continued to menacingly build in Ashburton. A drop in dining patron numbers had also forced their hand.
Ashburton Library is establishing a Homework Hub from today. The hub is a dropin service staffed by teachers and supported by library staff. Library manager, Jill Watson, says it’s designed to help take the stress out of homework for parents, students and their families. “Students will be able to complete their task under the supervision of a trained teacher,” she said. The Homework Hub will operate during term time.
ECan reviewing flood protection funding in Ashburton Jonathan Leask Ratepayers are going to pay their share for greater investment in flood protection in Ashburton under proposed changes by Environment Canterbury (ECan). In its draft annual plan, ECan is proposing a reclassification for Ashburton District river rating that have been in place for 27 years to ensure the amount residents pay better reflects the benefits they receive. The proposal includes reducing the number of rating classes from 13 to 6, and including some properties that receive protection from flooding but don’t currently contribute. Ecan Councillor and co-chair of the council’s catchment committee, Ian Mackenzie, said the proposed changes ensure “those who are benefitting are paying their fair share”. Mackenzie said that around 82 per cent of the assets covered by current flood protection are urban but 73 per cent of the cost comes from rural ratepayers. Last year’s floods were a wakeup call to the level of significance of flood protection infrastructure.
Environment Canterbury is proposing to change how the cost of flood protection is distributed across the Ashburton River rating district, to ensure the amount residents pay better reflects the benefits they receive. PHOTO CHRIS SKELTON
“What the floods highlighted to me was how tenuous and fragile our flood protection investment is, especially when we consider that the forecasts for climate change predict that events like the May floods will happen with far greater frequency. “ In Canterbury he said around $15 million is spent annually managing our rivers and maintaining $650m of flood protection infrastructure that in turn protects $110b worth of public and private
assets. Most of these river schemes are underfunded and cannot provide the level of protection that communities expect he said. “In many cases, especially on our smaller rivers, it makes sense to consider putting in place comprehensive rating districts over the whole river system so that we can manage these rivers not only for flood risk but for all the other values that our communities expect.” A significant change has been
the development, both urban and rural, that has occurred since most of these flood protection schemes have been built. “Some of this new development has been enabled because of this flood protection such as the Riverside industrial estate in Ashburton and the new subdivisions above Tinwald. “The industrial estate is protected by the Ashburton stopbank, and Tinwald by the Valetta stopbank both of which are designed
to withstand a 1 in 200-year event - just. With the expansion of urban development “we know that there will be an expectation from these property owners for better protection than farmers might expect for their land”. “We also know that we will need more money to manage our rivers and the associated flood risks to meet these rising expectations, and we will need to review whether those who are benefitting are paying their fair share.” As well as the proposed changes to Ashburton River rating, he said there is also a push for a return of annual flood protection funding from central government. The government stopped flood protection funding back in 1989 which had previously paid most of the capital cost and up to 50 per cent of the maintenance costs. “We are hoping sense will prevail and that the river reviews proposed and success with our appeal to government for on-going funding will be successful and allow us to raise the money we need to successfully adapt our river management strategy to face the challenges of the future,” Mackenzie said.

Mid Canterbury out of the afforestation limelight
So far, Mid Canterbury has dodged a bullet, according to David Acland, Mid Canterbury Meat and Wool Chair for Federated Farmers. The district has had little land converted to widespread forestry at the expense of good sheep and beef growing country. “Land values in Canterbury are still too high for forestry and carbon farming to come in and buy the district up,” he said. “It’s not viable.” “I don’t see it as a Mid Canterbury issue that swathes of farmland will be taken up by forestry. But if you have read the Environment Canterbury report for Mid Canterbury on new policy regulations on water you would think that with the restrictions the only viable option for dairy farmers would be afforestation.” The government needs to do more to stop productive farmland from being converted to forestry, according to Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ). Forestry is not the answer. Currently, there is little national guidance to help local authorities stop miles of productive sheep, beef, and wool-producing farmland from being converted to forestry. Policy changes were needed to make sure the increase in carbon farming to meet New Zealand’s climate change obligations did not come at the expense of the country’s sheep and beef country, said Lawrence Yule, author of a recently released paper, Managing Forestry Land-Use Under the Influence of Carbon. Yule’s paper called for a more strategic approach to planting trees and outlined areas for an investigation to address the issue.
Land values in Mid Canterbury are still too high for forestry and carbon farming to come in and buy the district up. “We can’t simply plant our way out of our climate change obligations,” Yule said. “There is a risk that this will accelerate highly productive food-producing land going to forestry.” New Zealand had relied heavily on carbon sequestration (the process of capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide) through plantation for-
estry to meet its international obligations to reduce climate emissions, rather than reducing gross emissions from all sectors, Yule said. B+LNZ had raised serious concerns for some time about the ability of fossil fuel emitters to plant exotic trees on sheep and beef farmland for offsetting rather than reducing their emissions.
Offsetting was a way to compensate for emissions by funding an equivalent carbon dioxide saving elsewhere. “B+LNZ is not anti-plantation forestry and we have always seen significant opportunities for the planting of exotic and native trees on-farm, but this should not come at the expense of rural communities,” said B+LNZ CEO,
PHOTO NZ FARM FORESTRY ASSOCIATION
Sam McIvor. “There is a real risk that shortterm land-use decisions will be made to the detriment of longterm land-use flexibility, rural communities, and export returns.” “Our own view is that the Government needs to change the ETS because that is the legislation that’s causing the problem.”

Venison growers: Surety an issue Pat Deavoll Average prices to venison producers held strong during December and were now sitting about $1.50 a kilogram above where they were at the same time last year. Marketers and Deer Industry NZ (DINZ) were increasingly confident that the market recovery was under way and that returns to venison producers would continue to increase during 2022. Hamish Guild of 3700-hectare High Peak Station in the Mid Canterbury foothills said, “It is a bit of an interesting one from our perspective seeing the scheduled rise at a time of the year when it traditionally doesn’t”. “It is a positive thing, but as a store weaner producer, it is a concern not knowing what that price is going to be next year. “From the finishers buying our weaner deer in April we get strong signals as to what the market will be going into the next season – if it is going to be taking on-face or with risk what the purchase price will be. “So, lack of surety is an issue,” Guild said. “In our on-farm sale in April we are looking to sell over a thousand weaners this year.” Venison, which was largely sold to restaurants, was particularly hard-hit by lockdowns due to Covid in Europe and the United States. With sales to restaurants limited, prices fell, and stocks built through 2020. As restaurants reopened in 2021, these stocks cleared, paving the way for a more positive 2022. DINZ chief executive Innes Moffat said the industry watched with concern the return of restrictions in Europe and North America at the end of 2021, but these did not appear to affect demand.
There is concern among venison growers with not knowing what the price is going to be next year. “Having a strong presence in China and at retail in the United States, as well as the traditional European and US markets, is important. If these new markets are sustained the industry will be much less vulnerable in the future to down-turns in any one market.” Nevertheless, demand during the European game season – when prices to farmers typically peak – would remain important. “Early discussions between marketers and their overseas customers point to prices to farmers during the coming autumn to continue to track above 2021 levels, before peaking in spring during the game season,” he said.

Adkins crowned Aorangi FMG Young Farmer of the Year Tom Adkins has secured himself a spot at the FMG Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final. Adkins, a block manager on Caberfeidh Station and an Upper Waitaki Young Farmers member, was announced as the winner in Fairlie on Saturday night after a full day of challenges. Senior machinery operator Lachlan Angland was named as runner-up and dairy farmer Peter O’Connor came in third place. The Aorangi regional final organising committee was made up of local Mackenzie Young Farmers members. The team put on an outstanding day, challenging contestants to a range of tasks that tested their ability and knowledge of the food and fibre sector. Adkins did not expect the win. “I came to give it a good crack, take it all in and prepare for future regional finals”, he said. Adkins favoured the head-to-head challenges. “I enjoyed the physical aspect, being able to get out, break a sweat and get competitive,” he said. In the lead-up to the grand final in July, Adkins said he would be brushing up on his cropping, machinery, and horticulture knowledge. “The study has just begun.” Angland, a member of the Pendarves Young Farmers Club, was competing in his second regional final, after qualifying at the Aorangi North District Contest, the first stage of the competition. In his third regional final, Peter O’Connor was representing the Hinds Young Farmers Club
Peter O’Connor (left), third, winner Tom Adkins and Lachlan Angland, second. after also qualifying at the Aorangi North District Contest. The contest is based on four pillars – agri-skills, agri-business, agri-sports, and agri-knowledge. Adkins will battle it out for the title of FMG Young Farmer of the Year at the grand final in Whangarei this July against six other regional final winners from

across the country. New Zealand Young Farmers chief executive Lynda Coppersmith said the stakes for 2022 were incredibly high, being the third contest season impacted by the global pandemic. “Entries for FMG Young Farmer of the Year were up 30 per cent this year despite the uncertainty of Covid which is a credit
to all our amazing volunteers, members, sponsors, and staff who put this contest together,” she said. “Our competitors represent the full diversity of the primary industries and the array of opportunities available and goes to show that New Zealand Young Farmers’ members really are the best and brightest.”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Success in one area of life won’t automatically bring success in other areas, but certain basic principles will apply universally. The work is best chunked down into small steps and mastered in order. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): No one comes into their own doing whatever everyone else does. As long as you are deeply satisfied by the work you are doing, it’s OK if you don’t fit in. In fact, it’s a good sign. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): There’s a time to keep score, and a time to indulge and share without worrying about who gave what. Scorekeeping turns giving and receiving into a job or a game instead of a spiritual act or a pure pleasure. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Anything you do to develop and learn about yourself, you do for your relationships. This is why you don’t have to be in a relationship to be working on one. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): The umbrella of indifference may keep you dry, but it also obscures the sky. The emotional weather is mild today, making it a good time to lower protections and feel the cool rain of possibility on your cheeks. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): It doesn’t matter what the “it” is; what matters is how much you’re willing to focus on it. Could you focus on it to the exclusion of anything opposing? Could you focus on it to the exclusion of anything at all? LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You’ll give and hold out hope that your charity is going to a good place. Don’t worry. In today’s case, the real benefit happens inside your heart as you hand it over. The rest is gravy. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Real deals happen face to face – that exciting place where the risk is there and you never do know what the other person might do or say. Artful conversation will separate the amateurs from the pros. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You’ll reach a turning point in your work. Pause here a while to really consider the options. Once you pick a direction, its reversal, though not impossible, will be awkward and time-consuming. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): While you’d rather go into a game with a strategy, those require time you won’t have today. So, the best strategy will be to stay on high alert for clues and trust your instincts. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You possess qualities that seem indelibly you, yet new styles of being are still possible. After all, in the stretch since your first breath, you’ve already been many people and more incarnations will unfold. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Maybe life is fair; maybe it’s not. No single person is objective or omniscient enough to know. But things don’t have to be fair to be good. An unjust moment will be, in the end, a glorious gift.

OUR VIEW
Never take life for granted T
o anyone else, it’s just a small stone with the letters JC marked on it in
pen. It sits amongst papers and documents on my desk but it’s so much more than just a stone to me. It’s a poignant reminder that you should never take life for granted, that you should live every moment like it’s your last and, if you’re a parent or grandparent, you should hug your kids every day and enjoy each precious moment with them. Why? Because you don’t know when it’ll end. My JC stone reminds me of that daily but particularly yesterday, February 28. Because on February 28, 2016, a fit, healthy teenage boy, who I knew well, went to sleep
Daryl Holden but never woke up. His name was Jonty Carran, who at 13 years old was one of the most exciting and precocious sporting talents Southland had seen for decades. Yes, I know that’s a big call to make for someone so young and still a baby in sporting terms. Generally, that would be true, but everyone that knew Jonty, who saw him carve up rugby teams ahead of his age, dominate athletic events, play representative tennis and turn his hand to any sport with
ease, knew he was special. Very special. And it wasn’t lost on anyone that, almost eerily, the personable, blond-haired, good-looking teenager looked a carbon copy of the last extraordinarily gifted sporting youngster to emerge out of Southland. You may have heard of him. His name was Jeff Wilson, who decades earlier showed that living in Invercargill was no obstacle as he played cricket for New Zealand and test rugby for the All Blacks before he’d turned 20. Would Jonty have managed the same feats? Possibly, but sadly we never got to find out. Worse, his family to this day are still searching for answers. Countless tests followed Jonty’s death in the search for why
such a young, healthy and athletic boy never woke up on that fateful day. First it was the detectives looking for drug or substance abuse, then it was the autopsy, the coroner and, finally, cardiology specialists. All were unable to find a cause for the sudden death. A small slice of Jonty’s heart remains at Oxford University in the United Kingdom for testing in case scientists discover any new clues that could unravel the mystery. Jonty’s mother said it was like a teenage cot death for her boy, who was so popular, so well thought after that his funeral in his hometown of Otautau was one of the biggest ever seen in Southland, with 1700 attending.
I was there with my son Finn, who was a Southland tennis buddy of Jonty’s. They’d chatted and joked about good times at a tennis tournament just a few days before Jonty died. The funeral was a celebration of a life cruelly taken way too early. Everyone who attended was given a JC stone, a keepsake if you like, to always remember Jonty and to always remind you to enjoy life while you can and not to sweat the small stuff. As New Zealand and world rugby mourns the tragic double loss at the weekend of powerhouse All Black wingers Va’aiga Tuigamala and Joeli Vidiri, it’s again a good lesson for all of us to heed. My JC stone reminds me of that every day.

Eighteen for eighteen Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR
I
t’s all about the numbers this week. On Friday I came across a story that really struck a chord with me. Social media is a minefield for parents. Here’s a possible solution, just getting it to stick will be the challenge. Praise should be dished out to both the parents for their great idea and the child for buying in AND sticking to it. An 18-year-old in Minnesota is $1800 richer thanks to an agreement he made with his mum, promising to stay off social media until he was an adult. Sivert Klefsaas was 12 when he made the deal with his mother, which she called the “18 for 18 Challenge”. On Facebook, Lorna Klefsaas shared a picture of her son, along with the phone and the cheque he earned, with the caption: “He turns 18 tomorrow. He will have $1800 in his pocket and new accounts on Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter!” Sivert said it wasn’t too hard growing up without social media, and his friends kept him up to date on any info or trends he might be missing. But once he turned 18, he immediately created new accounts. “It’s hilarious. I feel like I’m 80. I can’t seem to figure out social media. It’s pretty embarrassing.” I bet that is the first time anyone aged 18 has uttered those words! If you can’t get ‘buy-in’ from your nearly teen, here’s some other words of wisdom from an awesome LOCAL team. If you have kids interacting online you may already be aware of the dangers they are exposed to. Do you know how to help them navigate out of tricky situations? Our locally-based Digital Waitaha can help with their STOP BLOCK and TALK programme. STOP BLOCK TALK in a nutshell: tell your child to:
Winners both: Eighteen-year-old Sivert Klefsaas is $1800 better off and mum, Lorna, has managed to keep her son away from social media for an extra six years. STOP as soon as you feel angry, anxious, uncomfortable, “something doesn’t seem right”. BLOCK the person who’s making you feel that way, or block yourself from the situation or game. Then talk to a trusted adult. STOP: As soon as you feel angry, anxious, uncomfortable, something doesn’t feel quite right. It might be bad language, bullying, a horrible image or they are asking you to do something like send a pic of yourself. Just stop, (stand up, take a break?) BLOCK: Block the person who’s making you feel anxious. Or block yourself from the game or situation. This is difficult as it might be a good friend or a game you love. But would a true friend make you feel uncomfortable? So many emotions run through a child’s mind when faced with an uncomfortable online situation,
and today is a huge cause of mental unwellness. Embarrassment, FOMO, loneliness, all may affect his or her desire to BLOCK and indeed TALK. TALK: Parents of course love to be the first person you talk to, but your trusted adult might be another whanau member, older sibling, a teacher, principal or family friend. The Digital Waitaha Charitable Trust has tips and programmes to help our children and the wider whanau. Crash, bang, collapse – is rugby boring? I have been a follower of rugby for many years and on Friday night I had a couple of friends round to watch the clash between the Crusaders and their team, the Highlanders. They agreed with me: it was boring, boring, boring. The only time I was on my feet was when I went to replenish the glasses. Crash, bang, collapse. Crash, bang, collapse across the field. Then the whistle goes and back they go to the middle of the field for a penalty. The kicker makes about 10 to 15 metres up the field and the ball lands in the spectators in the grandstand. That is hardly much of a penalty. If a kicker cannot make 30 to 40 metres from the middle of the field, he should re-
tire. Then there is the dangerous tackle law. Quite right that these
should be penalised, but what about the ball carrier? Head down, arm and shoulder braced,
and knee bent forward. How often is the injured party the tackler? Is the ball carrier not liable? Of course, the TMO (television match official) sorts out what has happened in the melee. Quite often, in consultation with his two helpers, the ref goes to the TMO, which shows us what happened. After the first viewing, one can usually see if the try was scored, or whatever. But no. We have to watch it six times and wait for the result of the ref’s consultation. The game is set to play for 80 minutes, but I wonder, with all these holdups, just how long it actually takes. Yes, I know, it is easy to be an armchair critic but . . . I have been seriously considering getting the knitting needles

Jason Laking’s bid to reach 400 career riding wins is now within reach. The Ashburton-based jockey climbed to 399 victories over the weekend when he saluted at Riccarton on Friday, guiding long-priced winner Red Sunday to victory for Paul Harris in the opening race of the day. And now he’ll head to a massive meeting at Wingatui this weekend, with the magic mark firmly within his sights. Laking landed the 30-to-one shot home on Friday afternoon with an inch-perfect ride, giving Red Sunday a good run off the speed before allowing the gelding to come with a big sustained run to grab the win in the shadows of the post. Moving to within one early in the day gave Laking a good chance of getting the next one as well with a good book of rides throughout the remainder of the day, but he had to settle for three minor placings instead. He went close with both Street Fightin Man and Phelan The Power, who finished second, and Final Savings ran a bold race to finish third, but he couldn’t quite grab the victory. Of his 399 wins, 110 of them have come on the Riccarton surface – a track Laking has been a frequent face visitor to for almost all of his riding career, which began back in the 1998-1999 season. This week’s Wingatui meeting features the Southern Mile Final, worth $60,000. Horses have been competing in heats of the series with points accumulating to find the final make up of the field. Laking has been riding a number of contenders for the event, including Phelan The Power and the ever-consistent Country Boy.
Morrison keeps good times coming Matt Markham Another successful weekend on the track has elevated John Morrison further up the national ranks. At the completion of the first two months of racing for the year – in a newly scheduled harness racing season which runs from January to December – Morrison currently sits fourth on the national driving premiership, having saluted on 16 occasions. It’s an impressive step into the senior ranks for the former Ashburton College student, who only last year graduated from the junior driving grade where he was a three-time premiership winner. The transition is often a tough one for young talents, especially those without the support of a major stable to provide a plethora of drives each week.
But Morrison continues to toil hard, and is being rewarded for his dedication. Last week alone he drove at four meetings. One at Addington on Thursday, then down to Invercargill on Friday before a trip home to Ashburton on Saturday before trekking to Oamaru on Sunday. But three winners across the four meetings made the travel well worth it, and he’s now mixing it up there with the best in the business, the likes of Blair Orange and John Dunn, near the top of the premiership. “It’s been really good, far better than I could have hoped,” Morrison said last week. “You never quite know how well the first few seasons in the senior ranks are going to go, but I’ve received some great support and been able to drive some really nice horses which makes it a little easier.” Morrison kicked off his winning weekend with victory at Invercargill on Friday aboard the Tony Barron trained Life’s A

urday where he really shone, with a winning double. The first came aboard the Tony Thomas-trained Boudica, who
has been in Morrison’s care for the past month. Thomas is domiciled in the Marlborough region so Morrison has been overseeing the training of the mare to avoid lengthy travel to meetings. Saturday’s win was the mare’s third, and her second from her last four starts, as she found the back of the leader Just Holla early then held too many guns for her rivals in the run to the line. Morrison found himself back in front later in the day and provided a local victory for Winchmore trainer, Ben Waldron, when Franco Josiah went back-to-back. “Ben has done a great job with this horse. “He hasn’t been an easy one to train but he’s chipped away, and the horse is loving life now and really enjoys getting on the top end and bowling along.” A seven-year-old, Franco Josiah is raced on lease by the Brown Bomber Syndicate and Renee Williams, and has now won six races and over $50,000 in stakes.

Records tumble as Shania dials in at Championships Matt Markham The star of sharpshooter Shania Harrison-Lee just continues to rise. After a tumultuous 2021 in which she spent seven months on the sidelines due to a wrist injury, the former Ashburton College student bounced back in a big way last week at the Mana Outdoor National Championships – her last visit to the championships as a junior competitor. In shooting terms, competitors are a junior until their 21st year and Harrison-Lee will be outside the age bracket by the time the 2023 championships roll around, so leaving behind an event that has been such a huge part of her life in style was important. But even the 19-year-old had to admit that she never expected it to go the way it did. “Beyond my wildest dreams, just an amazing week where

everything fell into place, I’m probably still struggling to believe it to be honest,” she said. “The injury aside, I was so happy with how last season went, it truly blew me away – but I think if I could go back and talk to Shania from 12 months ago and tell her what’s unfolded in the start to this season, she wouldn’t believe me.” In a week where the University of Canterbury student was dialled right in, she broke five New Zealand Trophy records and ten New Zealand score records, both in New Zealand Junior Women and New Zealand Open Women categories. Harrison-Lee kicked off her week by winning the Designated championships on Monday, breaking her first record with a score of 626.7, she then stepped up to the mark on Tuesday and bettered that with a 628.4 over Tuesday and Wednesday, winning the graded aggregate trophy with a record score. In the women’s match on the Thursday, Harrison-Lee was again in sublime form, winning over mentor and friend Denva Wren with yet another record-breaking aggregate score, before switching to the teams events on Friday and Saturday. The South Island were unable to match their northern counterparts in the Inter Island competition. Harrison-Lee admitted that by Thursday, her wrist, which has had to undergo extensive rehabilitation and strength training since its injury, was starting to impact her, but adrenalin and her

usual fierce determination and passion got her through. “I was in a real push mode by the end of the week, most shoots would normally take an hour – but I was getting out within about 31 minutes in my last two shoots, but I felt like I was in full control at the same time. “There’s some nerve damage to my wrist, and the pressure and weight that comes with shooting means that it does get sore during
a competition. I competed in six matches during the week, I think the most I’d done before going up there was about two since the injury.” This year should have been huge for Harrison-Lee; she was supposed to be heading to the Commonwealth Games to represent her country, but Covid has put an end to those plans, and so she’s got one eye already on 2026 in Victoria, Australia.
For now, though, it’s a case of juggling her university studies and keeping a close eye on the developments around travel and quarantine with two major shooting events looming on the horizon. The first is the Junior World Cup in Cairo in May, which she admits might be off the table already, but the Junior World Championships in Korea in July are a distinct possibility.
Tough start to T20 for Allenton Matt Markham Allenton’s return to competitive cricket after a lengthy break on the sidelines wasn’t exactly the fairytale return that they would have hoped for on Saturday. After being bundled out of the South Canterbury 50 over competition earlier in the year, the Allenton side have been forced to sit and wait, with rain impacting their only other chance to play over the last month as the T20 competition got under way. On Saturday however, there was no more waiting as they trekked to Timaru for a double-header on Saturday afternoon, hoping for better results than they were able to achieve in their first season in the South Canterbury competition. But it wasn’t to be, as they fell to Star/Celtic in the first round of the day and were then dominated by Temuka later in the afternoon. They would have felt they were in with a chance in the opening match against Star/Celtic, after they restricted them to just 116
Satveer Singh swapped the bat for the ball on the weekend, and claimed five wickets across two matches. from their 20 overs out in the middle. Satveer Singh was in dominant form with the ball, taking four of his side’s six wickets, with his four overs conceding just 16 runs in what turned out to be a man of the match performance. Allenton’s response with the bat started positively. Gurmeet Singh (14) and Ranvy Pannu (25) put a 35-run opening
stand on within the first five overs to give their side a strong chance, but frequent wickets after they both fell left them in trouble, and they were all out for 98 – 18 runs short of their target. That left them needing a win against Temuka in the afternoon to boost morale, and when skipper Karmjeet Singh won the toss and elected to bat, the side had their chance to put a big total on
the scoreboard. Solid starts by a number of batsmen gave some hope, but wickets again fell frequently. Kulvinder Kirk’s 37 runs from 18 balls was an innings highlight, while Harpreet Dhami added 25 not out, but ran out of partners at the other end as Allenton were rolled for 107. Satveer Singh again stepped up to the mark with the ball, and
claimed an early scalp to try and give his side an advantage in their defence, but a 67-run third wicket stand saw Temuka home to win by eight wickets. The weekend’s play saw Mid Canterbury’s other side, Tech Stags, out of action. They defaulted both their games on the weekend due to Covid impacting on player numbers, a week after their maiden victory in the Tweedy Cup – the 50-over competition. It’s unclear at this stage whether or not the side will be able to return to play this coming weekend. South Canterbury Cricket confirmed to the Guardian last week that they are monitoring the situation closely, and will remain open to the idea of redesigning the competition should more teams be impacted by the virus in the coming weeks. Both Tech and Allenton are scheduled to play at home this weekend in double-headers. Tech will square off with Pleasant Point in the early match, while Allenton play Celtic and then the two South Canterburybased sides will switch grounds and play the other Mid Canterbury team in the game later in the afternoon.

Stalemate marks return to the court Matt Markham It wasn’t quite victory, but it was the next best thing. Country Mid Canterbury’s prolonged return to the Tennis Canterbury Premier competition for this season kicked off on Friday night, and they finished the night with a draw against rivals, Waimairi. It’s been a long time in between drinks for the side who haven’t played since the completion of the first half of the season, back in December of last year. But back on the court with a bit of gusto, they hooked into their work under the lights at Wilding Park on Friday night. Jack Tiller showed he’s back on track with a comfortable straight-sets win in his singles match, while Cameron McCracken got the better of a familiar face in Flynn Ness, to see Country Mid Canterbury grab the top two ranked singles. Jason Feutz and Gareth Evans were unable to repeat the effort in their matches, losing in straight sets. In the doubles Tiller and Evans lost a tight match but Feutz and McCracken were excellent and won 6-2, 6-2 to keep the overall matches tied. Then the calculators came

Both teams had claimed six sets each across the overall tie, and both had also picked up 52 games each, meaning a tie was the only result possible. It’s a positive start to the
year for the Premier side, who can now push on and at least see if they can get close to making the playoffs – an effort that would require a number of victories over the final month of play, many
against top-ranked sides. This week they get a chance to eat into the margin, when they play the fourth-ranked side Burnside Park at Wilding Park in Christchurch on Saturday afternoon.

Brookland secures maiden win Mitch Brookland scored his maiden win when he claimed victory in Tinwald Cycling Club’s, Hinds Seed Cleaning, 48km handicap event around the roads of Hinds on Sunday. The race was wide open leading into the concluding stages, with a bunch of in excess of 20 riders coming together. Brookland had the best of the finish, kicking strongly to secure the victory. Kristine Marriott showed her sprinting prowess to take the second place spoils. Mike Pearce continued his strong showings to step onto the final podium position. Dave Knight produced his best ride of the season to secure fourth place. Monique Brake and Mike Hanson rounded out the top half dozen. Recently crowned New Zealand under 23 time trial champion Logan Currie, secured fastest time honours, riding the distance in a quick 64.01. Co-markers Kyle Gray and Steve Hands recorded second and third fastest time. The juniors and division 2 contested a 15km handicap race. First starter Jack Gorrie had the best possible outcome, riding strongly to take the winners spoils. Kaidyn Broomhall hung on bravely to secure second place. Zac Brookland charged through the field to claim third place. Cooper Spillane, Eliza McKenzie, and Charlotte Neal battled out the minors, with Cooper edging out Eliza and Charlotte on the line. Back marker Zoe Spillane recorded a time of 26.33 to lift fastest time honours. Kenny Johnston claimed division 2 bragging rights with victory over Brian Ellis and Merv Grewar. Next week the club will contest a 60km handicap event around the Blackbridge block.
Crusaders go two-from-two against gritty Highlanders Matt Markham For 66 minutes, Friday night’s Southern Super Rugby derby belonged to anyone. That is until the Crusaders flicked the switch and left the Highlanders reeling in their wake, as they ran away 34-19 second-round winners under the roof at Dunedin’s Forsyth Barr Stadium. In an ultimate power-flex from the competition’s most feared side, the Crusaders absorbed pressure for long sustained periods of the match, and then paid it back in double, as they scored 15 unanswered points in the final 14 minutes of the match. For so much of the game, it was the Highlanders who made all the play. They led 13-0 after just 13 minutes of play, through two penalties to Mitchell Hunt and a try to Sam Gilbert.
But Sevu Reece set the wheels in motion. He dashed over from a quick, tapped penalty in the 16th minute, when some of the Highlanders might have been impeded by Crusaders players who were still retreating. Reece then scored in the 29th minute, at the end of a move involving Will Jordan and centres David Havili and Braydon Ennor, to give the Crusaders their first lead at 14-13. The Highlanders reclaimed the lead with a penalty to Hunt, but another penalty to the Crusaders put them ahead 17-16 at halftime. Hunt kicked a penalty in the 46th minute which put the Highlanders ahead again, 19-17, and for the last time in the match, before tries to Jordan and Tamati Williams sealed the match. Crusaders captain, Scott Barrett said the Highlanders threw all they could at them. “I think the Highlanders – we knew their game plan – wanted to put the ball in behind us and really pressure the breakdown,” he said. “Probably in the first half they
had the better of that, and it probably frustrated us a little bit. “I think we adapted and actually put the ball in behind them in the end, and turned their big boys around, and forced their back three into some decisions.” With two wins from their two matches the Crusaders are the only New Zealand side in the top four of Super Rugby Pacific, with the Brumbies ahead on the standings via a greater points differential. The Reds and the Waratahs fill the next two spots, while the Chiefs are currently sixth, just ahead of the Hurricanes. It was back to Christchurch after the match on Friday for the Crusaders, who have left their bubble in Queenstown and will get back to their home grounds for training this week. They are due to play Moana Pasifika at Mt Smart Stadium this weekend, but whether or not the match goes ahead is still to be confirmed after the newcomers missed the second round on the weekend through players within the squad contracting Covid.
