The toughest review of all

Topp Twins reveal both facing cancer diagnosis For decades people around the globe have felt the love of a Topp Twins performance, but now it’s the iconic duo who are feeling the love back. Fans across New Zealand and around the world were left reeling on Sunday night when a TVNZ exclusive revealed that twins sisters, Dames Lynda and Jools Topp were both facing a cancer diagnosis that is testing them both physically and mentally as they remain apart from each other. But just as they’ve put smiles on faces for so many years, the Topp Twins-loving public gave it back in spades in the wake of the show airing, offering calls of support and love toward the pair. “Wow, we both feel so loved. Thank you all for your messages,” the pair posted on their Facebook page after the show had aired. Lynda, who lives in Methven with her wife Donna, where the pair operate the successful Topp Country Café, was diagnosed in December of last year with Grade 3 invasive breast cancer and has undergone surgery for a double mastectomy. She is currently undergoing six months of intensive chemotherapy. Twin sister, Jools, who is based in the North Island, was diagnosed with breast cancer 16 years ago and has recently discovered her cancer has metastasised and is now undergoing radiation therapy and other treatments. Best known for their performances as a duo, the twins shared on Sunday night that their battle was one they were being forced to be apart, in order to protect each other. “So, all of a sudden, boom.

having cancer or not having Jools here,” she added. 2022 was to be the year the duo would celebrate 40 years of the Topp Twins, making them the longest-running performance

act in New Zealand. They’d planned on a nationwide tour with a number of events to help mark the occasion, but for now those are indefinitely on hold. “For us, this is not the end, but

the beginning of a new journey. We’re looking forward to the day when we can get back together on the boards, the lights come up, and we’re tipping our hats to you,” they said. A Givealittlepage was set up on Sunday night to help support the twins with non-publicly funded treatments such as acupuncture and vitamins, as well as transport and general living costs, so they can focus on their treatment without financial stress. Late yesterday afternoon more than $55,000 had been raised by close to 800 donors, with the amount expected to continue growing. The Methven community, of which Lynda is a big part, is also getting behind one of their stars and her family with a number of fundraising efforts being planned and expected to be announced in the coming days. ‘Stressed and angry’

Regulations mess leaves family in limbo Jonathan Leask Ellie Stocker is supposed to be in her ultimate new home. Instead, she’s stuck in a nightmare, watching money go down the drain over wastewater consent issues and the costs to build increasing around them. Frustrated is an understatement for Stocker, her husband and their three children. They’re one of a group of prospective homeowners and developers stuck in consent limbo with Environment Canterbury’s (ECan) new position on septic tanks in north-east Ashburton. It’s there that eight applications, totalling around 30 homes, in an area near the airport has hit the proverbial brick wall. Due to a risk of increased nitrates, which could impact on safe drinking water standards, ECan now isn’t approving consents for septic tanks in the area, but will approve holding tanks. ECan consents planning manager, Aurora Grant, said the change was needed because it centred on “the importance of protecting groundwater for all that use it – including neighbouring properties with drinking water wells”. It was a rule change that blindsided Stocker and other applicants. Those applicants included Christchurch firm Kingan Property Investments, who were behind the Stockers’ new home development. “We had everything ready to go for November, hoping we would get titles,’’ Stocker said. “But ECan changed everything

The Stockers - Poppy, Brad, Robbie, Dean, and Ellie, stand at the entrance to where their home would be by now, if not for an ongoing hold up around wastewater consents. PHOTO SUPPLIED officially in December and then shut down for three weeks. “We were blindsided, and so was the developer.” The change relates to the risk of elevated nitrate levels in northeast Ashburton and the impacts on groundwater from installing septic tanks. So, instead of enjoying their new home, Stocker said she was suffering “sleepless nights spent worrying” about when and if they would be able to build their dream home. “It’s absolutely draining.” The Stockers bought the property in June last year and sold their home in preparation for the build. They received finance, had designs drawn up, and started planning for life in their new home. That dream slowly faded into a recurring nightmare.

Months passed and everything remained on hold as the developer struggled to gain approval for wastewater discharge to issue the titles. “The family from the block in front of us messaged to say they no longer had finance and had to pull out of the land because lending rules were changing rapidly,’’ said Stocker, whose family have been forced to find a rental to live in while the saga played out. “It was heartbreaking. “I started to get scared.” Christmas came and went, their finances expiring for a second time. Meanwhile, she said ECan’s office had shut down “leaving us completely in the dark and the worry turned into anger”. Kingan Investments had no previous troubles with other sec-

tions in the area, but hit a consent wall when “ECan shifted the goalposts”, Stocker said. “The council, the developer, and we all weren’t aware,” she said. Then they found that they weren’t alone with the consent issue, with a mix of developers and individual property owners also impacted. Stocker said they had all been receiving requests for more information on the consent applications. But in supplying the information, all they were getting was just more questions and not a lot of answers. It took a meeting between ECan representatives and the applicants at the end of February to finally clear up the issue. Stocker was told ECan can’t do septic tanks due to the nitrate risks, without a long drawn out

and expensive consent notification process. The applicants can do a permitted activity, through the council not ECan, with a blackwater (toilet) holding tank and a greywater tank that gets treated and discharged. It’s a solution, “not an ideal one”, that provides some hope, she said. They were now taking the path of least resistance and opting for the blackwater storage tank. But Stocker said they still have no timeline on when that would get approval. “It is around the same price as a septic tank, except you get it emptied every 40 days at $300 a pop.” A septic tank needs emptying only every 18 months. Once approved, there was also the issue with sourcing and installing a blackwater system, which could take six months, she said. They considered cutting their losses and looking to buy elsewhere but were “now priced out of the market if we can’t move forward with our country dream”. “I feel guilty for uprooting my family,’’ Stocker said. “I feel sad that it might never happen. I feel stressed all the time. I feel angry that it’s taken this long for a straight answer.” They have some direction now, but Stocker said she wouldn’t let herself get excited “until we have pegs in the ground”.

This is far from egg-cellent Daryl Holden

Cadbury, Cadbury, Cadbury. What’s going on with your Easter eggs? Or should that be half eggs? Because our favourite marshmallow treats are continuing to come in a half shape – and it’s fired up Mid Cantabrian Easter egg lovers. They’re not happy that Australian chocolate manufacturer Cadbury is persisting in selling Easter eggs that are shaped like one half of an egg. That form has replaced the traditional egg-shaped style where two halves were joined together, creating a crunchy chocolate layer in the middle. Cadbury first started selling half eggs in 2019 and have seemingly ignored the public fall out that continues even now. Ashburton Guardian marshmallow Easter egg lovers certainly expressed their choc shock, with Tracy Helen Muckle one of many who responded on our popular Facebook page. “Well, birds don’t lay half eggs now, do they?,’’ she wrote. “I can’t work out why they would half the Easter egg at all.’’ And we can’t work it out either. “If it’s only half, it’s not an egg,’’ Chris Hàrdwick said. Reinier Jess VL even ventured down the being-fair-to-the-consumer line. “(They) should be marketed as half eggs. I’ve never seen an egg this shape.’’ Allie King recognised that one of the best things about the old marshmallow eggs was the delicious double layer of chocolate where the two halves joined together. “Nooo,’’ she said. “(The) best part was breaking them in half and eating the chocolate off .’’ Hayley Steans also noted that half eggs were not even cheaper than the traditional full-bodied ones. “Double the price for half an egg,’’ she said. An upset Christine Richards suggested going down the protest line. “Disgraceful to be getting

Flood-damaged wetlands recover Daniel Alvey Conservationist Russell Langdon has managed to rebuild his flood damaged wetlands. Riverbridge Conservation Park, on the banks of the Ashburton river near Westerfield, has made a full recovery after last year’s floods damaged wetlands, plants, and fencing. Now in his 90s, Langdon has been working on the area for over 20 years, and he said it had been good to get everything back to working order. “There was two foot of water everywhere, destroyed all the fences,” Langdon said. Since the floods Langdon and a small group of volunteers have brought the area back to a preflood condition. “The wetlands have made a full recovery, we’ve done a lot of new planting to recover lost plants and add new ones,” Langdon said. Along with the recovery there has been new construction. “We’re building a bird watching tower so you can look over the wetlands,” Langdon said. Alongside new tower Langdon

Langdon wishes for their return one day after being dropped a decade ago from the breeding programme, after snowfall destroyed the original sanctuary. Langdon used to have a small colony of the ducks on the property. Langdon’s goal is to spread the conservation message and hopes

to pass it on to the next generation. “Some school groups came out to explore the area, the kids didn’t want to leave,” Langdon said. He welcomes people to the area to learn about conservation after visitor numbers dropped during the pandemic and floods. “I’m here every day, you need something to get out of bed for,” Langdon said.

Rakaia School pupils have been given the opportunity to learn more than just numbers this winter, thanks to the Rakaia Lions Club. The Rakaia Lions Club has kindly donated a tunnel house to Rakaia School’s garden after local Dorothy Knight submitted an application. President of the club Mark Cressey is thrilled with it. “We have done lots with the school over the years,” Cressey said. The club purchased the tunnel house from Goldpine for just over $1000. The school’s garden has been around for six years, with help from Knight, Rakaia School’s principal Mark Ellis said. “Each week she comes and helps with the garden and sometimes gets help from the kids, Ellis said. Earlier this month children got the chance to plant their own vegetable seeds. The children are encouraged to take vegetables and fruit home with them and will be making soup from the vegetables in the coming months. With help from Rakaia’s senior teacher, Bridget Grant, and her partner Nathan Nordqvist, the tunnel house has been completed and is ready to go. Keeping the lights on during Covid Malcolm Hopwood EA Networks is determined that, when you flick the switch, the lights will come on. As a result, during the pandemic, it requires all 120 staff members have a daily RAT test at home before they come to work. Any visitors to EA Networks are also asked to test before they call or one will be administered before they enter the building. Chief executive, Roger Sutton, says EA Networks’ job is to keep the lights on in all sorts of conditions, whether it’s snow or nor-westers, and his staff must be available to respond. The requirement was introduced at the start of the month and, so far, only eight staff members have tested positive, with the majority now recovered and back at work. “It makes them feel safe about coming to work. They’re hard working and don’t want to hesitate or be anxious about turning up,” he said. “We introduced the system once RAT tests became available and provide them for every staff member.” In addition staff now work in four separate bubbles to keep them separated. “We have two groups of line mechanics in different localities, the office staff are in their own bubble and those who staff the stores are also by themselves,” he said. “It will continue until we feel Covid has moved through the community, numbers have re-

EA Networks has also engaged a Christchurch GP, Dr Jonathan Chambers, to talk to staff about Covid and hold fortnightly webinars where they can ask questions about the pandemic.

He’s been available to EA Networks since Covid struck two years ago, Sutton said. “It’s important our staff feel safe coming to work otherwise we can’t maintain our critical

infrastructure,” he said. “Through this system there’s been very little impact on our operation, and our staff are appreciative of the way it’s been handled.”

The Lions, the fairies and the walkway The section along Mt Harding Road, from the RDR past the Thyme Stream subdivision, was boosted by a biodiversity grant from the council going towards native planting. At the other end of the track, the Lions had only just finished the section by the Methven Cemetery when strong winds in September brought down several trees closing that section while the trees are removed. As for the Enchanted Forest, council’s community services group manager Steve Fabish said the fairy adornments could be treated as an art installation, which would require a simple approval process handled by the Methven Community Board. The walk was to have been part of the Methven and Foothills Walking Festival which was a Covid casualty and organisers are now planning for 2023. Instead it will now be part of a competition alongside the popular scarecrow trail during the April school holidays.

Jonathan Leask The Enchanted Forest will remain as a key feature of an improved Methven Walkway. The Ashburton District Council visited the enchanted forest in response to some complaints, and has deemed it to be an appropriate addition to the walkway, under some guidelines. There were fears it was being removed due to closed signs being erected at the section of the walkway, but it was just a coincidence as the Methven Lions Club was busy removing dangerous trees and reshingling the track. The Lions have co-ordinated a community project in collaboration with the council to upgrade, and expand the walkway around Methven. The walkway opened in 1979 but Lions spokesman Mac McElwain said it had fallen into disrepair until the Lions decided to take it on as a project a few years ago. “We divided it into three loops and we have pretty much got two of them done,” McElwain said. “There is powerful logic be-

sections of the track thanks to a grant from the Methven Community Board. “The objective is to make it all weather and suitable for most capabilities – walking, biking,

mums with pushchairs, and most of it is wheelchair accessible if not a bit bumpy. “If you are really adventurous you can get a mobility scooter around it.”

Beware the damn survey Peter McQuarters PETE’S PERSPECTIVE

S

urvey, bloody survey. With apologies to a very successful Irish stadium rock band. There’s another pandemic sweeping the world and no amount of isolating or mask wearing or vaccinations will prevent it. It could be halted a lot easier than the current world atrocities, but it won’t be. And by my own non-scientific reckoning, almost everyone will become affected by it. Some, possibly you, may experience no adverse effects at all, some might perversely even gain pleasure from it. But for some of us the reaction is severe and soul-destroying. We huddle at home, knowing that if we go out it could strike us at any time. But we need to survive and that means heading into town so we go about our business with dreaded anticipation. Fast food outlets, homeware stores, DIY outfits, you line up, swipe your card and then as the receipt spits out you know it’s coming. You brace, you recoil, but as the salesperson looks you in the eye and circles something on the receipt you can feel it coming for the millionth time and you begin to lose the will to live. “Now if you’d like to go online and fill out the survey you can

win a free blah blah blah.” I have no beef with the staff, they’re doing what they are instructed to do. I have never previously, currently nor in the future will I ever complete their pesky survey. I am forced to stand there, breathe deeply and listen to their spiel. For the umpteenth time. I treat this circus like unsolicited mail. It’s annoying. It’s head

junk. And it’s persistent and repetitive. If I was ever to go online and do the survey and give them feedback, It would only be to tell them to never ever ever ask me to go online and do their stupid survey again. I can’t see that working. Am I condemned for the rest of my life to listen to this prattle all the time? Short answer, yes.

In the big scheme of troubles of the world, this may seem trivial, but it is BLOODY ANNOYING. I’m thinking of just getting a small sign on a stick that I can hold up as I pay. Or how about I tattoo it across my forehead, “Don’t ask me to fill out your flaming survey. Ever!” I reckon they’d still ask. ’Cos head office said they have to.

A big weekend on the golf course I

did a bit of cup filling in the weekend, both physically and mentally. My partner Milzo and I had another crack at the Phat Duck 3500 golf tournament on Saturday and Sunday. It’s a four-ball best ball round on the Saturday which sets you up for the weekend, but it’s the combined stroke round on Sunday that’s the real maker or breaker. Our four-ball round on Saturday was a case of what could have been, but we finished the day in the middle of the pack and importantly secured the ‘haggle’ from a couple of Tinwald legends even though Snake and Smithy’s fourball score was better than ours. I’m not sure why, but an after-match drink purchased by an opponent always seems to taste sweeter than normal. There was couple of really good scores under 60 and there were the usual blow-outs, including one paring where one player was trying to give away his partner. They must have had a whopper score! The Tinwald clubhouse is a very social place and every year I turn up and think to myself now I’ll take it easy on Saturday and then Sunday won’t be such a battle. There’s a couple of issues with that plan. It’s usually just once a year I catch up with my partner socially and after a couple of handles of ‘Idiot and

Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR Coke’ I get all excited and think I have the ‘hacket bracket’ of an 18-year-old. This year though I did find a window of clarity and opportunity to sneak off home at 9.30pm. So I arrived on Sunday to stories of spilt KFC and some hardy (or silly) souls still going for it at 3am.

I am not sure what has happened to Bump, he has been in a rich vein of form of late. This is a drastic turnaround from the Fairlie 500 tournament a few years ago now, where he tried to hit every tree on the course and had several visits out of bounds. I was playing the same group and had sore ribs for weeks afterwards. I made the comment that people should save $39.95 and not buy John Kirwan’s book and just have a round of golf with Bump to help with depression issues. Good to see him have the last laugh. Coveted farm on the market By Pat Deavoll Innovative arable and dairy support/livestock property Greenvale Pastures, at Methven is on the market for the first time in four decades. The farm combined its natural resources, climatic conditions with leading-edge technology to place it at the forefront of New Zealand and worldwide nutrient, environmental sustainability, irrigation, and arable best practice. Methven farmers Craige and Roz Mackenzie of Greenvale Pastures Ltd won the 2013 Ballance Farm Environment Awards’ Gordon Stephenson Trophy. They had been prepared to think and act “beyond the boundaries of conventional farming for some time now,” said Craige. In 2008 he was awarded a Nuffield Scholarship to study the carbon footprints of different types of farming systems. In 2010, the couple was filmed by Rural Delivery, attempting to win a place in the Guinness Book of Records by producing the world record for the heaviest wheat crop per hectare. They narrowly missed their target that year. “We have always looked to be as efficient as we can be,” Craige said. The progressive couple had taken technology to the next step on their irrigated farm “using every available tool to improve their production and cost efficiency”. “Variable rate irrigation has been very interesting for us,” said Craige. “On average we save about 32 per cent of the water – in the shoulder season about 50 per cent. And that

is about looking at the zones and saying these are getting to about field capacity – they don’t need anything, and letting it come down on the heavier zones.” Greenvale grows mainly specialist crops, with this season’s rotation including hybrid carrots, radish, fava beans, wheat, both seed and milling, and ryegrass and fescue for seed. With their daughter Jemma they co-own a company AgriOptics that utilised precision agriculture technology to provide agronomic support and

Precision agriculture was key to farming sustainably, Craige and Roz believed. “We have used all the precision technology we can including variable rate irrigation, variable rate fertiliser, soil sampling, crop sensors, and yield mapping. “You don’t spend what you don’t need to spend. So, because of that, we have always wanted to put the right things in the right place. Once you are profitable in every zone your overall profitability goes up. Once that happens you can invest in technology. It’s very hard to be green if you are in the red.”

RDRML CEO Tony McCormick said the construction had gone very well. “But because we have built the screen outside of the canal, we have to connect it to the main race and we are scheduled to do that in May,” he said. “That is the end of the irrigation season, and we always schedule major shutdowns between the irrigation and generation (of power) seasons. “At the moment there will be a two-week outage to connect in the canal.” The screen is the biggest facility of its type in New Zealand and likely in the top ten in the world. The main fish screen structure is 105 metres long and five metres high, but the amount of actual screen area is over 370 square metres. The RDR is a 67km long scheme that diverts water from the Rangitata River for irrigation, stock water, and hydropower generation. It has been in operation since 1945. Over time technologies have continuously been improved and environmental aspects investigated, and the new fish screen is an amazing accomplishment, McCormick said. He said that come the end of May RDRML would start “watering up and wet-commissioning” the scheme. It would then start testing to make sure the screen performed. Come September RDRML would be conducting live fish trials to ensure the fish could get safely through the screen and back to the river.

The Weta travelling rain gun has been developed by AgFirst Engineering to keep up with regulation changes when it comes to land application of dairy effluent. A key design consideration was to develop an irrigator which could achieve consistent application depths throughout the entire effluent area to ensure the spread of nutrients are even for simplistic nutrient proof of placement. If the travel speed reduces due to extra drag on the hose, change in contour, distance, or elevation the irrigator will regulate the turbine bypass and maintain a constant travel speed. Therefore, achieving even application rate and depth across the entire farm.

The Weta irrigator is robust and low maintenance. Traditionally travelling irrigators have cogs, sprockets, chains, and gearboxes etc under extreme tension which leads to constant wear. The Weta has made this simple and robust with a hydraulic pump and motor driving the winch and no need for gear changes. The Weta irrigator can achieve flows up to 40,000L per hour, application depths from 1mm to 20mm and wetted widths up to 100m and as short as 20m. This delivers high volumes at low travel speeds over large areas significantly reducing the number of irrigator shifts required while protecting the environment at the same time.

N-Boost gaining traction as urea prices rise Pat Deavoll Farmers with an interest in lowering their nitrogen footprint and fertiliser costs are in for a treat on April 13, at Dromore Dairies, Ashburton, when Donaghys presents its patented N-Boost application. Tim O’Sullivan of Donaghys said N-Boost was used to enhance nitrogen efficiency in plants. You need to mix it with liquid urea for that to work, he said. “It is a natural product – it has got adenine compounds and amino acids so it’s not ‘dangerous’. And it was developed in and is made in New Zealand. “Obviously, there has been increased interest this year with nitrogen caps and the high cost of urea. “Dairy farmers are the biggest users of urea, and they also potentially have the biggest goal posts to shift. So, N-Boost is the best product for them.” This season’s record urea prices, coupled with nutrient cap regulations, have seen a lift in the number of dairy farmers changing their fertiliser programmes to lower their nitrogen footprint and costs. Donaghys managing director Jeremy Silva said the company is working at capacity to keep up with renewed demand for N-Boost. “It’s one of the few options out there that can help farmers maintain or lift production off lower nitrogen inputs,” he said. “We’ve seen the dual impact of high urea pricing and regulations on nitrogen come together. The result has been a wave of dairy

The N-Boost system is sprayed on to pasture by a conventional boom sprayer after mixing it with dissolved urea in a mixing station. farmers turning to foliar applications of urea. “When N-Boost is added they can cut back their application rates this way to get under the N-cap, and they’re finding they can cut their urea bill and protect their dry matter production.” Silva said dairy farmers were looking at options where they could maintain milksolids pro-

duction and their profitability. “They are having a try of the N-Boost system this autumn to work out how it suits their farm with a view to running it all through next season.” The N-Boost system is sprayed on to the pasture by a conventional boom sprayer after mixing it with dissolved urea in a mixing station, which Donaghys

supplies to farmers. The company has seen a lift of more than 85 per cent in N-Boost sales this season. “We’ve ramped up our production of N-Boost to keep up with this growth,” Silva said. “Additional mixing stations are on order to supply to farms coming on to the N-Boost system. At peak, more than seven per cent

of dairy farmers were regular users of the N-Boost system. That number tapered when the urea price crashed to around $500 per tonne, but with the lift in urea prices demand is rapidly heading back towards previous levels.” The Field Day on April 13 is at Dromore Dairies, Ashburton 164 Bebbingtons Road, Dromore Supply 37281. 11am until 1pm.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Media encourages all to privately rate, approve or disapprove of what we see. It’s an unattractive practice that takes us into the business of others. It’s far more charismatic to tend to your own realm. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): It’s better to get into a small chunk of a project than bite into one you won’t be able to finish in a day. Also, in light of the Mercury situation, you’re wise to leave wide large margins for human error. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): What matters to you may not be important to the others... yet. While you wait for things to come around, focus on what the group is currently about, and find your place in that. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Excellent taste is not always the easiest thing to have. The rest of the world so rarely complies. Today will be the exception. You’ll have much to feast your senses on. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Clean up and you’ll get back what you thought you’d lost and what you’d totally forgotten about as well. Other found items will prevent you from unnecessary purchases. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): There is this hum, too low to be audible, and yet you sense it in the background. It’s what the composer calls a “pad” that glues the other tones together, lending reassurances and a soft place to land. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): True power is earned. And because truly powerful people have earned their status, they have spent time at every level and can access any, turning their current up or down to suit the situation. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You will invite people to support you, but this is not an open invitation. To ask everyone would be taking away from those who really need what you do. Small groups will be lucky for you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Use your feelings. Push your senses into a situation and you’ll notice they can travel further into a sense of knowing than your thoughts and questions can get you. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Your mind is calm, your heart full. This allows for your inner grace, almost supernatural in its depth, to show itself in the kindest consideration for the feelings and reactions of others. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Leaving things as they are isn’t so easy. To alter the course of things, all you have to do is be there. But this principle works in your favour, too. All you have to do to make a difference is show up. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You really don’t know what criteria another person is using to make a decision, and no light is shed by what the person says either, as people don’t even know themselves why they do the things they do.

Cancer touches ‘untouchable girls’ T

hey’re the untouchable girls, as the song goes, but sadly few of us can escape serious health issues at some stage. That’s the situation facing New Zealand entertainment legends, Methven-based Dame Lynda Topp and sister Jools. The irrepressible Kiwi entertainment double act, who for more than 40 years have probably been the world’s only comedic, country singing, dancing and yodelling lesbian twin sisters, are both battling breast cancer. The twins know it will be their greatest challenge and not just because of the threat of cancer itself. Lynda has said that not being able to fight it together, and support each other in-person,

Daryl Holden makes it even more challenging for the pair, who since birth have shared everything from the stage, the songs, the ups and the downs. But in the restricted Covid-19 world we all must live in, the 63-year-old Topps know they must stay apart to protect each other. But knowing that, and accepting it, doesn’t make it any easier. “I don’t know what’s harder – having cancer or not having Jools here,” Lynda has said. If the stress of cancer isn’t

enough, Covid-19 has also forced them to cancel gigs for the past two years, meaning their income would have taken a serious hit and added to their worries. Cancer, of course, doesn’t have favourites about who it attacks, but somehow it seems so unfair that it’s hit our two larger-thanlife performers, who for decades have provided fun, laughter and even hope for thousands of Kiwis. That was one of the key reasons why they were named Dame Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to entertainment in 2018. And Methven folk may well regard Lynda as one of their own, as they should. After all, she owns Methven’s Topp Country Cafe with wife Donna.

Two years ago, when Covid put the country into a national lockdown, the pair lifted spirits in the town by playing music in a real Kiwi resourceful number eight wire kind of way. They strapped a generator and speaker on the back of a truck, boosted the volume and regularly drove around the streets of Methven with their feel-good songs blasting out. Now they need that hope and positivity from us and it’ll be tougher for Jools. She was the first Topp Twin to be diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2006 at the age of 48, with gruelling chemotherapy and the removal of her left breast allowing her to recover. Last year, though, she began to feel unwell again. A short time later, Lynda also

found out that she had breast cancer. As a gig, beating cancer is something else altogether, but throughout their career, which started with singing to the cows on the family dairy farm in Waikato, the Topp Twins have shown many times that anything was possible if they set their minds to it. Their phenomena is such that they’ve successfully crossed from the fringes to the mainstream, having been accepted and loved for who they are. Their activist songs have regularly challenged people to stand up and fight for what they believed in. And, right now, the Topp Twins need to show that same sort of fight on the most personal of levels.

Rugby season starts to crank up Matt Markham Preparations for the rugby season stepped up a notch across the district over the weekend. But while some relished the opportunity to get out onto the paddock and have a bit of a run around, a number of other sides were kept in the sheds with matches called off due to Covid isolation still impacting on players and management. Just how affected some clubs are will become apparent in the coming weeks, with the Canterbury Country Combined competition set to start on Saturday, April 9 – a week later than was initially set down when the season draw was initially released. While Mid Canterbury teams won’t be in action this weekend, fellow unions Ellesmere and North Canterbury, who join with them to form the Combined competition, will play a Sub Union round among themselves. Mid Canterbury will get the chance to do the same a week after the competition begins, with a Watters Cup round set to be played during Easter among

Bensdorp again

A week after national success came to the household, the surname Bensdorp was back in action again on the weekend. But this time, instead of Neville taking the honours, it was wife Karen who picked up the silverware, beating her husband in the process. The duo fought out the Ashburton MSA Petanque Club’s Rosemary McLaughlin Trophy on Sunday at the club. The tournament was a part of their 10-year celebrations. Nicky Foden finished third, with Trevor Nish picking up fourth placing.

Lock grabs win Ashburton Raceway trainer Steve Lock found his way into the winners’ circle at Oamaru on Sunday, for the first time since September of last year. Lock, who relocated early last year to Ashburton, was victorious in the first race of the day when long-time maiden Nordic Prince broke through in the hands of Gemma Thornley. The win was the 80th training success of Lock’s career.

the four clubs; Rakaia, Southern, Methven and defending champions, Celtic. The green machine stepped out on the weekend to play their 100th match against Marist bedfellows, Timaru Celtic, in South Canterbury for the Smith Moore Trophy. It wasn’t to be for the Ashbur-

ton side though, who had to hand the trophy to their rivals for the year. Southern had a hit-out on Saturday as well, taking on Kaiapoi at Hinds, with the visitors emerging victorious. Up in Methven, the senior team was scheduled to play Linwood in the annual Tane Norton

Cup match, competed for each year between the two sides. However, the match was cancelled due to Covid. The club’s Senior B side had a hit-out though, under glorious skies, playing Diamond Harbour for the Jarrod Luli Cup, with the Methven side securing the victory.

The Mid Canterbury Combined XV schedule for the season has been released. The side will begin their campaign in the Miles Toyota 1st XV Championship against the Selwyn Combined 1st XV at Lincoln High School on Saturday, May 7. They’ll play their first home game of the year, at Ashburton College, against Nelson College the following Saturday.

Pinch-hitting May makes the most of big chance Matt Markham Methven horseman Ricky May made the most of the opportunity to sit behind one of the best in the business on Friday night at Addington. Pinch-hitting for junior driver Ben Hope, May jumped aboard the exciting Muscle Mountain for Woodend Beach trainers Greg and Nina Hope in the Flying Mile on Friday night, and made every post a winner, saluting in style. In just his second race-night drive behind the big trotter, May is now unbeaten on him. But while he’s clearly impressed with what he feels behind the horse, May wasn’t being drawn in to making any comparisons between him and the outstanding Monbet, who he drove for the Hope stable. “It’s hard to say,” he said. “He’s a pretty, big strong powerful brute, isn’t he? “He’s certainly got a big motor, but it’s just too hard to compare them.” May handled his charge with caution over the mile, negating the

tricky one mile starting point on the bend at Addington early before launching him to sit parked at the 1000m mark. From there he always looked in control, cruising to the line to win in a time of 1:56 – a new track record. “I thought they’d go about that, but you’d think he could definitely go faster.” Co-trainer, Greg Hope said after the race that Muscle Mountain would now likely be pointed toward the Group One Fred Shaw Memorial New Zealand Trotting Championship in a fortnight with Ben Hope back from suspension. That’ll likely see May jump back aboard stablemate, Midnight Dash although he could also drive mare, Time Up The Hill, who was a super third behind Muscle Mountain on Friday night. The win was one of two for May at the meeting – the other also coming for the Hope stable. He found a path along the markers with McCrikey to win one of the pacing events on the card to register his ninth driving win for the season. From 149 drives, winners have been hard to find but May has definitely been around the action. His list of winners is complemented by 35 placings.

Locals claim the 3500 spoils The locals ruled the roost in the annual Tinwald Golf Club 3500 on the weekend. In a field of over 160 players, Tinwald Golf Club members Andrew Hill and Mike Sandrey emerged ahead of the pack to win the overall title in the men’s competition, while Marilyn and Peter Walker picked up the mixed title, on a huge weekend of golf. Played over both Saturday and Sunday, the tournament attracted players from across the district, with the first day played as an 18-hole fourball, best ball on Saturday, before switching to an 18-hole aggregate net scores round on Sunday. Hill and Sandrey were in control at the turn on Saturday, and never looked back. They posted a score of 195 at the end of the two days – one clear of Paddy Bradford and Perry Hunt, who finished sec-

ond in the men’s event, with a further 10 back to the third placed Brock Peddie and Brent Green in third spot. In the mixed competition, the Walkers finished with 209, three clear of Garry Lee and Linda McLea, who were another three clear of the third placed Pauline and Catherine Bell. With the Covid restrictions lapsing on Friday night, the usual social activities of the weekend were able to go ahead and there was plenty to celebrate for a return to some form of normalcy for tournaments. While the winners were celebrated, there was extra reason to smile for David King on Sunday. He nailed an ace on the second hole, a 180-metre par three on Sunday afternoon.

Matt Markham Supremacy on the Mid Canterbury Bowling greens was discovered during the Champion of Champions Singles on Saturday, where five new champions were crowned. One of the elite titles of the season, the Champion of Champions event takes individual club title winners and pits them against their peers from clubs across the district in a knockout competition. On the Ashburton Bowling Club green in the Ashburton Domain on Saturday, this year’s winners were found. And again, it was the Allenton Bowling Club who were at the forefront, picking up three of the titles.

Mat Bassett added a Champion of Champions singles title to his impressive line-up of achievements on the green by winning the senior men’s title. He beat Ashburton’s Brentton Donaldson in the final, in a gripping match. In the race to 21 shots, Bassett held his nerve to win 21-18. Methven’s Pat McElwain stopped a clean sweep of the senior titles for Allenton when she downed Rosemary Bennett to claim the senior women’s title. Like the men, the final was an intriguing battle, with McElwain winning 21-20 in a thriller. Jock O’Connor kept his good run of form going with victory in the Junior Men’s competition, while Donalda Watson made it three for Allenton with her win in the Junior Women’s event. Ashburton MSA bowler, Gus Hurrell completed the day by winning the Men’s Colts competition.

Interclub tennis season wraps up for Country Mid Canterbury Matt Markham The country showed it was still capable of mixing it with the city slickers in this season’s Tennis Canterbury interclub competition. The interclub season finished up for the three Mid Canterbury based sides on the weekend with a tough final round of results – but a top four finish for both the Division One and Division Two sides highlighted a season of progress. After fielding just one side last season, an increase to three teams playing in Canterbury-wide competitions this season has underlined the growth and potential of tennis in the Ashburton district and while there was no success, there’s still been plenty to smile about. The Premier team, who made the final of last season’s competition, will be pleased to see the back of this year after they finished with a loss on the weekend, albeit a narrow one. Playing Bishopdale Te Kura Hagley Park at Wilding Park, they won three matches and lost three to have a tied game, but their rivals picked up one more set than

Top four finishes for div 1 and div 2 teams them to claim overall points in the match. After the doubles, things looked bright. Jack Tiller and Rhys Cromie won their match comfortably, while Jason Feutz and Connor Brosnahan picked up theirs in a tie-break. Feutz was the only player to win his singles game though. On Sunday the Division One team still had a chance of finishing top of the standings, if they could clean sweep their rivals Elmwood, but instead were on the wrong side of a dominant performance. They failed to win a match in a result which dropped them to third overall for the season – still a strong result given their first season back in the competition. Sitting on the cusp of the top four, the Division Two team did enough to claim fourth overall with their match against Cashmere. Like the Premier side, they split the scoresheet on matches but lost out on sets, after winning both doubles matches. Peter Leonard and Riley Breen

Lee Gilbert was a part of the Country Mid Canterbury Division One team who finished third overall in Tennis Canterbury Interclub. PHOTO ADAM BURNS 311020-AB-1752 went to a tie-breaker to win their match, while Dave Withell and Joshua Gilbert did the same. In the singles, a win to Gilbert by default was enough to see the matches levelled, but Cashmere had picked up two extra sets to

take out the overall tie. While Premier tennis action is finished, there’s still plenty to look forward to. Mid Canterbury will be looking for an impressive ninth straight victory in the Browning Shield

in a fortnight, and there will be plenty of action on the courts this coming weekend when the seniors championships are held at the Braided Rivers Community Trust Tennis Centre on Oak Grove.

Lake Hood turns it on for Nationals skiers Matt Markham The standing of Mid Canterbury’s Lake Hood on the New Zealand waterski scene has risen rapidly over the course of the past week, paving the way for future big-ticket tournaments to come to Ashburton in the future. Saturday saw the final day of the New Zealand National Waterski Championships held on the Lake Hood water, and the final acts of a week-long event that brought more than 100 people into the district to compete finished on a high note. Tournament organiser, Janeen Donaldson, said they couldn’t have scripted a better week. “We are absolutely stoked with how well the Nationals went,” she said. “Our team at the Lake Hood Waterski Club pulled out all the stops to get the site ready in five short weeks, and along with the weather being on our side most days we’ve seen some awesome skiing.” Donaldson said that the feedback from those who travelled to compete, many of whom had never skied on Lake Hood before, was really encouraging. “The lake skied incredibly well all week, on Saturday for the open events it was mint with calm water for the slalom in the morn-

ing and a wee head breeze to jump into in the afternoon. “The feedback we’ve had has been positive, everyone seems to have really enjoyed themselves and the location.” And while the results on the water were really just secondary to the benefits of Mid Canterbury hosting the event, there was plenty to smile about still, with local names right among the action on a red-hot day of competition on Saturday. After a 12-hour day on Friday to catch up from some of the action missed due to last Thursday’s southerly that blew through the district, skiers were treated to a bluebird day from early on Saturday morning and big scores, big jumps and big results quickly became the order of the day. The open skiers stepped out for the most hotly-contested titles of the week and skied one round of slalom, trick and jump during the day. Hugh Donaldson set the tone with a Lake Hood course jump record in the preliminary round, only to better it in the final on Saturday, before Christchurch’s Alex King stepped up to the plate and smashed it again to win the Open Men’s jump event with a stunning 55.8 metre effort. In the open men’s tricks event, North Island skier Jack Silver was in super form, claiming an easy win ahead of Donaldson and his twin brother George, who finished second and third respectively. Emily Milner kept up her good form for the week to claim a silver medal in the Open Women’s tricks event, while Quinn Jansen did the same on Saturday, picking up second placing in the Under 14 Boys’ jump finals. Gavin Green added another gold medal to his haul too, with a win in the Over 65 men’s jump final. The week marked a special occasion for George Donaldson, who was awarded the title of New Zealand Open Men’s Overall Skier for points collected over the season’s tournaments. Following the completion of the individual skiing, the annual Teams Shield was determined. Teams of 10 are selected from across the week, with the five best scores of each slalom, tricks and jumps taken, with Canterbury emerging victorious with the perfect score of 15,000 over their rivals. The weekend was capped off with prizegiving at the Lake House on Saturday night where awarded winners were officially recognised. Initially this wasn’t to be held with Covid restrictions, but a relaxation of those rules during the week allowed the event to go ahead.
