Final bite for Retro Kitchen Daryl Holden Ashburton’s Retro Kitchen owners are pleading with locals to support hospitality businesses or more may follow their lead and close for good. Kelly and Debbie Macvey have made the painful decision to close their funky café restaurant in Burnett Street, with last Saturday being the final day of operation. The husband-and-wife team opened their 1960s-70s Kiwiana-style café in November 2020 but the combination of the Ashburton District Council’s CBD upgrade, which forced them to temporarily shut because of six months of roadworks outside their cafe, plus the lingering impact of Covid-19, left them with no option but to close their doors permanently. Now they fear other Ashburton businesses, especially in the under-pressure hospitality trade, could be forced to make the same tough choice. “We just wish people would get out and support hospitality businesses because you don’t want to see them go,’’ Kelly Macvey said. “You’ll lose them otherwise. “These people (business owners) are spending what they have accumulated just to keep their businesses afloat. “They need people to get out and support them because at the end of the day if they close that could be it. They are probably not going to jump back into it. They’re not going to have the money to do it. “It is a hard thing.’’ The Macveys said the Guardian’s shop smart, shop local campaign had helped promote businesses in the CBD especially and had given many a much-needed boost. But he said more was still needed, before emphasising the

but not for want of trying. At its peak, their business was packed out with happy customers loving the service, meals and atmosphere. But recently, two of their four staff got hit with Covid, which further stretched them. It was awesome.’’ The Macveys said it was now time to regroup and rethink,

Student Volunteer Army arrives to help Covid victims Malcolm Hopwood The Student Volunteer Army (SVA) has set up in Ashburton to offer a service to hundreds of people in isolation. Student Volunteer Army chief executive Sam Johnson, originally from Mayfield, said his army was established here in the last few days in conjunction with Ashburton’s Base Youth Centre. Students are tasked with picking up groceries and delivering them to people who can’t get out. “I’m proud we can partner with a local group and provide a service for those in isolation as a result of Covid-19,” Johnson said.
“
Youth Centre, Jenny Rae, SVA has attracted 10 volunteers, but Johnson would like more and is appealing to young people locally to make themselves available. The SVA grocery service was established in 2020 and now operates from 150 different locations in New Zealand. “In the last two years we have delivered to about 6000 people throughout the country,” Johnson said. “It’s the most effective way we can meet the needs of those trapped at home because of Covid and don’t have people with wheels who can help. It’s a service for those who have no other option.” The SVA was established nearly 12 years ago resulting from the Christchurch earthquake and Johnson is pleased it’s come home to Mid Canterbury. “There’s something very special about supporting the Ashburton
“It’s the most effective way we can meet the needs of those trapped at home because of Covid and don’t have people with wheels who can help. It’s a service for those who have no other option.”
He explained SVA offers an end-toend payment system to “make it easy for people to order groceries and have them delivered safely.” “Customers call SVA or shop online at shop.sva.org.nz. Once credit card payment is made, volunteers, operating from the Youth Base Centre, then select the items from New World shelves and deliver them to those in isolation. “Volunteers don’t handle the money,” he said. “If people can’t get out because of the pandemic, the government pays the delivery cost.” The service, based in Christchurch, operates through 297 New World, Pak’nSave and Four Square supermarkets around New Zealand. network,” he said. He’s pleased with the way SVA has flourished over the years, but the Covid work is “something I’m most proud of.” As chief executive, he’d like to extend its service further in Mid Canterbury and work with Ashburton College to develop other projects. It’s a way of recognising the importance of volunteering he said. “Our research shows it’s trajectory chasing for young people, it increases their employability, confidence and networking and reduces risk taking behaviour,” he said. For Johnson, at 32, SVA is his vocation. “This is my future and I’m enjoying it,” he said.

Taking a look behind the curtain at the event centre Maddison Gourlay
People of all ages got a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes at The Braided Rivers Community Trust Event Centre. The Event Centre, in association with Musical Theatre New Zealand, held a Big Theatre Open Weekend, which gave the general public an opportunity to be hands-on with operating technical, sound, lighting, and audio visual equipment in real performance scenarios. Ashburton Event Centre manager Roger Farr said the turnout made for a good weekend. “From my point of view it was a great weekend,” he said. “Any opportunity to see the magic of the theatre is a great thing in my view.” Numbers were slightly lower than anticipated, but Farr said the people that did walk through the doors were impressed. “We had a lot of family groups, and some people who may have been in the audience many times, but were keen to have a look at what does go on behind the curtain,” he said. “We had a good cross-section of people.” The weekend was a great way to inspire the next generation of sound and light technicians. Farr said there were a few youngsters that were keen to play around with the equipment. Representatives from local performing groups, Variety Theatre Ashburton, Mid Canterbury Children’s Theatre, The Big Little Theatre Company, Dance Worx Ashburton and Ashburton Highland Dance had displays in the foyer for people wanting to become members or see what is involved in all aspects of their production. Farr said they plan on repeating the event once restrictions allow a bigger number in the venue. The Ashburton Event Centre still has everything set up from the weekend so if anyone would

Questioning climate COVID change ‘embarrassing’ UPDATE Jonathan Leask
Ashburton councillors questioning the authenticity of climate change has been labelled “embarrassing” by one of their own. The simple task of the Ashburton District Council receiving the Canterbury climate change risk assessment technical report and the summary report threatened to become a debate on the merits of climate change. That didn’t sit well with councillor Carolyn Cameron. “I don’t think anybody can deny the climate is changing,” she said. “I think that is well and truly established and has been for a long time and to discuss that around the table is embarrassing.” Her comments followed councillor Lynette Lovett questioning what the report was based on. She had doubts about any suggestions that climate change was widespread, rapid and intensifying, even though it was a universally accepted situation. “Is it? Because climate is always
Councillor Carolyn Cameron. changing and we live with it, but a lot of it is people building in the wrong places and it doesn’t really address all those issues,” Lovett said. “I don’t think it’s intensifying as if you collect records over many years and look at [astronomy] and everything else … is [the report] all just computer modelling what people think or have they put in actual records and astrology into this.” Chief executive Hamish Riach said the report was the result of

two years of exhaustive scientific research and analysis, and they weren’t in the position to debate the merits of the scientific competency of the authors. “It is very hard from the point of view of officers to debate the merits of the technical report because it has been prepared by scientists who have come to the conclusion that these are the things they have found.” Councillor Stuart Wilson said “for me there is climate change” but he questioned the report’s
value and its use of Te Reo language. “A lot of it’s kindergarten stuff. “Pictures and circles, and not English words.” He asked if the mayoral forum had unanimously debated and agreed with it. Riach said they had. Wilson also asked who had commissioned the report, paid for it and if it would make any difference. “Government make decisions, so is it purely a read and wring your hands type of report?” Riach said it had been commissioned and paid for by the mayoral forum, but he didn’t “know yet whether it will make a difference”. “I think it is a very valuable piece of information gathering on a matter of significant importance,” Riach said. The report forms the basis of the ‘It’s Time Canterbury’ climate change campaign of which the council, along with the other Canterbury councils, had signed up to, Riach said.
Jonathan Leask Ashburton’s Mayor is playing down what looks to be a worrying statistic that shows one in 30 people in the district are active Covid-19 cases. Canterbury DHB figures showed there were 1156 active cases in Ashburton as of 8am Monday morning, which was 307 new cases since Friday. That means that about one in 30 people in the Ashburton District were an active case of Covid 19. But Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown did not think it was reason
As the district has a high vaccination rate, Brown said the community just needed to keep being vigilant and do what they can to minimise their risk. On Monday afternoon the Ministry of Health reported 1390 new cases in Canterbury since Sunday, with the CDHB figures, showing around 1.7 per cent of the region’s population are active cases. Nationally there are around 180,000 cases, 3.5 per cent of the population. Given the growing number of cases it is unlikely the Ashburton District Council will be removing its vaccine pass requirements to its facilities anytime soon. “Given the growing number of cases in our community, the importance of the booster shot in relation to Omicron, and the ongoing consideration of our staff’s

He expected the case numbers to continue to rise and while it was currently a low percentage of positive cases across the district it is having an impact. “It is affecting business and the workforce out there.”

health and safety there is no immediate plan to remove the requirement for a vaccine pass,” council chief executive, Hamish Riach, said. “The council’s approach aligns with our neighbouring councils, and we’re not aware of any planning to immediately lift their mandates. “While there is currently no specific end date to the mandates, the matter is under constant review, and we’ll look to guidance from both staff and central government about the appropriate time to lift restrictions.”
New cases 17,522 Testing More than 47,000 Rapid Antigen Test results were reported on Sunday, including 16,625 positive results. In comparison, 897 cases were confirmed via PCR testing.

Are these your photographs? Maddison Gourlay
A love for photography has led to many interesting camera purchases, but so far none of them ever had a roll of film still in the back. Now sitting on a bookshelf I have a variety of interesting cameras, such as my Box Brownie which has a roll of film from my trip to Barrhill stuck in it, a Kodak 110 camera, a nice 80s Pentax point and shoot, as well as my grandfather’s Tamron camera he got for his 21st birthday. Now, thanks to the antique store on West Street I added a 1960 German Agfa Optima to my collection because I saw it and had to have it. But, what made the camera even more special was the finished roll of Fujicolor Superia. So in the true Guardian spirit of shopping local, I took the roll of film to The Photo Shop in the Arcade to get developed. In the wait for the film to get back, I wondered what on earth could the photos be? It would be cool if it was wedding photos, but also I hoped it wasn’t because I wouldn’t want someone missing their wedding photos. Unfortunately, there were only three photos on the roll of film, but it looks like someone’s flour-

I am the divisional manager for Ashburton St John Youth. I see that you have seen Taylor Doyle’s story and her need for fundraising. Taylor is one of our cadets at St John and we are organising a fundraising auction (online) to help get her to Sydney. We have some absolutely amazing donations so far, I’m blown away. We are just working on a proper advertisement/poster and then we will begin getting the word out about this event within the community. I was wondering if you would possibly get on board with us and help us with advertising and getting as many supporters as possible? We would really appreciate your help! Of course, I was happy to help, this is one of the really cool things about my job. The ability to help people like this. Cutting a long story short, the auction items kept rolling in and I’d say we probably will take three weeks to get through them all. Even once I started the auctions, the offers of items came. Not only have the local businesses been incredibly generous with their donations, but people bidding on the items online have also been incredibly generous. Most items have well exceeded their value. Six days into the auctions we
have comfortably passed $6500 raised. It continues to blow me away, how people in this region love to get behind a cause and help people who are going through a tough time.

Trees removed Two trees have been removed from West Street and six new trees more suitable for the area will be planted in their place. Contractors removed a large tree from in front of Formosa restaurant and another on the corner of West and Tancred Streets, opposite Cleavers Corner. Community services group manager Steve Fabish said the two trees were removed as they had been showing signs of failing for a number of years. Other trees in the block had been removed already. In their place, four trees will be planted on the Formosa block and two on Cleaver’s block.

Five hundred workers to boost dairy industry The border change arrangement on February 4 to bring 200 dairy workers into the country plus a class exception on March 2 to allow another 300 brings much-needed clarity for the many dairy businesses. These have been in limbo, desperately seeking international workers to fill vacant roles on farms. CEO of Align Farms Rhys Roberts said that although the shortage of labour does not affect him, “ring anyone else on the list” and you would find someone who was struggling to fill their labour force. “No, it doesn’t affect us directly, we are not looking to recruit offshore now. But there are a few around who are short of workers, there are a lot of people looking to recruit. “New Zealanders want to work on dairy farms, but a range of things affects this- mainly that there is a low level of unemployment (3.2 per cent) at the moment. But we are having good success with Kiwis, probably the best success we have had in a long time,” Roberts said. “I also think dairy farming in New Zealand is starting to turn a corner and there is a lot more positivity in the industry on the back of milk prices and our record around Covid. If you look at the data not a lot of people on farms are catching Covid and I think there is a biosecurity issue, there. “But I think the bulk of it derives from the positivity of agriculture to survive the tough times we have had.” DairyNZ chief executive Tim Mackle said the dairy sector was

Special ‘pou’ for Rakaia Gorge Pat Deavoll A special unveiling of a pou (carved wooden post) took place in the Rakaia Gorge last weekend to celebrate the refurbishment of an area of land on the south side of the river. The land was owned by Ben Todhunter and Donna Field of Cleardale Station and the refurbishment was the result of years of work to tidy up the land and make it available to the public. The unveiling was successful – the weather helped, we had a good turnout of about 50 people, and it was great to celebrate what has been a long period of work, Field said. The pou was carved by John Reihana (Arowhenua) Timaru and Te Wera
King did the unveiling and blessing. “John was the star,” Field said. “He was recommended to us as he has a prestigious history of carving. He did a tremendous job – he is a master carver based in Timaru. One of the things he would really like to see is more of these pous around telling these legends. It would make use of his talents. The initiative was part of a much bigger picture leading on from when we brought the property five years ago, Field said. “We were really surprised to find we owned the island between the two upper gorge bridges and all the land below the road. It was really well used but we were dismayed because it was being trashed. People camping, pooing, planting marijuana, sycamores shading out the natives. And this was at the height of tourism as well. “We thought ‘what can we do’ as it was a unique place with a lot of people using it.
“We have done a lot of weed control, put in a track, Hana Kidd’s sculpture sits down the bottom. In the early stages, NZTA was redoing the Rakaia Gorge Bridge, so we obtained timber for our seats and our signs from this.” The other part was the lookout at the gravel pit at the top. Seven years ago, a young guy lost his life there and the coroner recommended a barrier be put up and so we worked with NZTA to ensure that we did a really good job, Field said. “This is the carpark as you go down into the gorge on the south side. “Lots of people in the area have worked on the project with us from weed control to track making. Now it’s a matter of maintaining it,” she said. “It is expensive and very committing, but it is a cool thing that we totally believe in,” Field said.

Connectivity upgrade welcomed Pat Deavoll The announcement of a big push to upgrade capacity on congested rural broadband networks gets a big thumbs up from Bill Wright of Cannington. “Ours is better these days because we have satellite wireless coverage, but it’s not perfect, we still get outages. But we were on copper wire and that was a disaster because you couldn’t get it half the time, it was so slow to download,” Wright said. “So, satellite wireless is an improvement, but it’s not perfect. “One of the big problems in our district is as a member of Fire and Emergency NZ we have poor connectivity, so I don’t get messages for call-outs. “We have coverage for emails through the wireless satellite connection, but we are still struggling to get connectivity for these call-outs.” The Government was committing $47 million from the Covid Response and Relief fund to improve broadband for rural homes and businesses that are facing congestion as demand for fast internet has significantly increased in recent years due to the pandemic. “The Covid-19 pandemic has shown us reliable internet is critical to being able to work, learn and socialise from our homes. Having been through lockdowns, it’s clear some rural networks had real trouble adapting to the extra usage,” Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs David Clark said. “Government’s actions to protect lives and livelihoods throughout this pandemic has proven to be the best economic decision. However, Friday’s announcement will further help us secure our economic recovery,” Clark said. We need ultimately cell coverage like the rest of the coun-

“Every year Federated Farmers surveys members on broadband and cellphone coverage in rural areas, to gather data on the worst blackspots and inform our advocacy to government,” Federated Farmers NZ President and telecommunications spokesperson Andrew Hoggard said. “So news that upgrades to existing cell towers and construction of new towers should see 47,000 rural households and businesses experience faster internet speeds and better reception by the end of 2024 will come as a relief.”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You choose arrangements that serve common interests and friendships with people who have complementary qualities. And you choose your passions based on... the methodology is mysterious, even to you. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): To know requires being open to knowing. You cannot shun, ignore, negate, reject or protect yourself against that you are in the process of understanding. Awareness, by its very nature, is a welcoming state. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): All those things that happened before were happening right now. All the things that haven’t happened yet will also occur right now. To live right now is to live in the only time. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): It would seem that we have to fight against the situations we don’t approve of, but to do so only creates more conflict and holds negative feelings in place. What are you willing to understand about it? This is the key. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Social media posts give the impression that everyone is coping beautifully, working efficiently, radiating confidence and living their best life. You know better, and you’ll lead with awareness and compassion. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): No one makes you feel love, annoyance or anything else. Those feelings are a reaction to your thoughts about people. You’ll examine and change your thoughts to cultivate a better mood. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Thoughts cause feelings, and feelings cause thoughts, and then the cycle rolls along. Is it exhilarating? Does it go where you want? Much depends on whether you know how to balance and steer. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You learn much about yourself by interacting with the ones who are attracted to you. Your repeat customers resonate with you for reasons that will be a delight to discover. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): It’s fun to save the day, and you’ll be in just the right place and time with all the right stuff (willingness, awareness, kindness) to do this for someone. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You say yes to what is happening, and that will turn out to be the only word you need. “Yes” will affirm the present, add energy and open the gates to the route of ease. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): It’s believed animals lack rich interior lives, but the time you’ve spent with them has convinced you otherwise. You’ll be favourably impacted by a member of the animal kingdom today. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Silent strangers put you in touch with your expectation and fantasies in a way that relationships with talking people cannot. Magic question: What did you want before you heard what the other person wanted?

Shane Warne – a lovable larrikin
H
e was the boy who never grew up, a colourful and mischievous Aussie and one of sport’s most remarkable characters. But before the notoriety and the blokey larrikin antics came the cricket where Shane Warne was, without question, an alltime great, who was anointed by cricketing bible Wisden as one of the best five who ever played the game globally. Warne, whose death at age 52 in a Thailand hotel on Saturday still seems impossible to believe such was his larger-than-life personality, was the architect of leg-spin’s revival, a spiritual leader of Australia’s all-conquering team for two decades and the first players to reach 700 test wickets. Only Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan stands above Warne in the all-time test bowling records.
Daryl Holden But Muralitharan’s 800 wickets should always have a big asterisk beside his name because of his suspect and regularly questioned bowling action, which came under much scrutiny without anything ever being done about it. Warne, though, was a true game changer, who in so many ways transcended cricket. I met him briefly on the 1997 Ashes tour of England when he popped over to say hi while I was interviewing Australian captain Mark Taylor in Nottingham. Warne was a massive star even back then and something Taylor
said has stuck with me all these years later. Taylor said it wasn’t just the flight, guile or control that made Warne stand out, but the sheer “fizz’’ he managed to put on the ball when bowling. Taylor explained that the amount of wrist action Warne could achieve meant that the ball’s revolutions were audible, and extremely off-putting, as the delivery approached the batsman. “I’ve never seen a spinner manage to do that and to get so much spin,’’ Taylor said. And that backs up what many experts believe, and his record and longevity certainly pointed to it, that Warne could do things with the cricket ball that other bowlers could not imagine, let alone execute. And he could do it against all teams and in all conditions.
His on-field exploits were, of course, only part of the Shane Keith Warne story, which included going on to become one of the most insightful commentators the game has ever had. But there was also very much a Peter Pan quality to him, which somehow made his death just that much harder to comprehend. Other famous cricketers and sports stars have almost aged before our eyes, but not Warne. Yes, shiny white tooth veneers, Botox, hair dye and hair transplants certainly helped him look much the same in his early 50s as he ever did. Personality wise, he was equally youthful and someone who seemed to play hard and fast – and right to that very sudden and inexplicable end. Warney was always in the
news, too, from getting banned for taking a forbidden diuretic, to the cosmetic surgery, and the numerous women, including those texting scandals that the tabloids loved him for. His prolific headline-grabbing love life also included a lengthy romance and engagement to British actress Elizabeth Hurley and his amorous ways even earned him a song written by comedian Kevin Bloody Wilson. He delivered a very Australian kind of honorary salute when he sang: “Warney, put your wanger away’’. It was all just part of the Shane Warne story, and some story it was. But now he’s gone, a state funeral an entirely appropriate send-off for the blond-haired Victorian, who heads upstairs to that big cricket field in the sky. At least Bradman will finally have a bowler to trouble him.

Brent finally winning the battle with Kohli
Matt Markham
Matt Markham The old method of trial and error has finally started to work the oracle with local trotter Kohli Trouble. The Brent White-trained squaregaiter put behind a few months of frustrations when he broke maiden status at the Hororata Trotting Club meeting at Methven on Sunday, and the hope is it’s now onwards and upwards. After showing plenty of promise, the gelding has caused White to have to try every trick in the book to get him to unleash his full potential, but Sunday’s dominant performance, with Gerard O’Reilly in the bike, would suggest they are winning the battle. “We’ve been trying everything with him, but it’s come down to his shoeing,” White said. “And I think after the way he has been in his last two starts we are starting to get it right because he’s trotting a lot better and a lot more confidently.” Purchased from Mike and Di Heenan, White said they had a ready-made racehorse when he first walked onto the property, and the hope is that now that they’re sorting out the little issues, that he might

campaign in the North Island. The big pacer, who has been in great form this year, is starting work again this week after a 10-day break, and will likely return to the races on April 1 for one of two runs at Addington, and then head north where targets include races like the Taylor Mile and

the Messenger at Auckland’s Alexandra Park. Sunday’s feature on the grass, the Hororata Cup, was taken out emphatically by the Stonewall Stud-prepared, Allamericanlover with Tim Williams doing the steering. The combo cruised to victory in the 3000m event.
Jason Laking has made it to his mountain top. The Ashburton jockey notched up the 400th career win of his career in the saddle on Saturday at Wingatui, when he perfectly guided Prince Alby to victory in the second race on the day, ending a month-long run to get the final two wins needed to reach the mark. The talented hoop, who is a mainstay of the South Island racing scene, brought about the milestone in his usually understated fashion, as he brought Prince Alby to the outside of the track and allowed it to storm past rivals in the run to the line and win narrowly. Laking began his riding career in the late 80s as a youngster, and has been found in the saddle almost always since. He did take a break from the game for a number of years, but returned to the saddle in the 2017-2018 season where he automatically established himself again as one of the best on the mainland. Since his return five seasons ago, Laking has ridden 70 winners including recent black type success on Noverre for the Te Akau Racing team. The march toward 500 wins could have easily been well under way by the end of Saturday as well, with Laking in great form picking second placing in the final four races of the day including the two big races – the Airfreight Stakes and the ODT Southern Mile final. Country Boy, Phelan The Power, Treybon and Irish Red filled those placings. He’ll get the chance to pick that back up on Thursday when racing returns to Riccarton Park.
Locals on stage at harness awards Matt Markham Mid Canterbury was up in shining lights at Addington on Saturday night, during the annual Harness Racing New Zealand Awards ceremony. The popular event was rescheduled from last year due to Covid restrictions, with close to 200 people enjoying the evening, split across two separate rooms. The awards took in achievements during the 2020/2021 season, and a few wellknown Mid Canterbury names made their way onto the stage. The Neumann family picked up the gong for two-year-old trotter of the year with their excitement machine, Highgrove, who was the dominant force of the age group throughout the season. He raced nine times as a two-year-old, winning six races and more than $84,000 in stakes. Highgrove is raced by Alan and Ian Neumann, Vinnie Neumann, Emma Hintz and Brent Clarke. He’s made a strong start to his bid to claim the three-year-old trotting crown as well, with this season’s starts netting two wins and more than $60,000 in stakes, including his dominant victory at the inaugural Harness Millions race night, run at
Alexandra Park last month. John Morrison was also up on the podium during the night, as he claimed his third New Zealand Junior Driver of the Year title. The talented young driver also produced one of the moments of the night, when he claimed the publicly voted Moment of the Season for his victory upon Time In A Bottle at Addington Raceway. The win was Morrison’s 50th for the season – but it wasn’t so much the win itself that won the award, but the moments afterwards as he came back to scale and proudly displayed his helmet to everyone. Inside the peak of the helmet was the written signature of young Charlotte McLeod, who just days earlier had lost her battle with illness. Morrison, a close family friend of Charlotte’s parents, Hamish and Hayley, had been wearing the signature inside his hel-
met for a week, and the victory was his first following her passing. Speaking as he received the award, Morrison reflected on how emotional the days leading up to that win had been. “It had been a tough time, but to get the win on that horse, I’d had a bad week, it was pretty special,” he said. “Charlotte was a great supporter of mine and loved following the races – so it’s a great thrill to get this award, but we’d give it all back to have her back. “It’s really hard to exAbove – Highgrove, owned locally here in Mid Canterbury, was crowned two-year-old trotter of the year. Right – John Morrison has a very special message as he accepted the Moment of the Season award.
plain just what winning that race meant, to do it for a person like her, a young girl, just nine, taken from us all – it was special.” The night’s prestige award, the Horse of the Year, saw trotter Sundees Son crowned champion to go alongside his titles as Aged Trotter of the Year and also Trotter of the Year. Bettor Twist was crowned Pacer of the Year.

Allenton dominates Champions titles
Ashburton Guardian Tuesday, March 8, 2022
Tough day on the court for Premier side
Matt Markham
Matt Markham
After rain delays and rescheduled matches, the winners of the four categories in each of the Champion of Champions Triples and Fours events in Mid Canterbury have finally been found. And with those results come plenty of smiles at the Allenton Bowling Club as they dominated proceedings, winning six of the eight titles across both championships – continuing a strong run of results for the club in recent weeks. Allenton won the Senior Women’s, Junior Men’s and Junior Women’s fours titles, and then added the Senior Men’s, Senior Women’s and Junior Women’s gongs in the fours, with plenty of silverware set to make its way into the trophy cabinet for the off season. It was almost a clean sweep in the triples for the club too, with Hampstead having to pull out all of the stops to win the Junior Men final – continuing an excellent record for that club in junior titles over recent seasons. In the Senior Men’s fours title, Methven emerged victorious over Ashburton. Methven were also in the money on the weekend, when the Brent Mayson-skipped side claimed success in the annual Brian Scott Triples on the Hampstead green. A big field of players lined up in the event, which remembers one of Mid Canterbury’s great players.
Bucking the Allenton trend, Hampstead’s Logan Ford, (left) Craig Kellett and Bronson Kellett won the Junior Men Champion of Champion triples. Also on Saturday, Allenton’s Jock O’Connor emerged victorious in a hotly contested Junior Singles event. Then on Sunday, it was off to the Ashburton MSA Bowling Green for a number of players to compete in the annual Getaway Tournament and again, Allenton were to the fore. Richard Kane, Jock O’Connor, Cory O’Connor and Murray Smallridge won the event with three wins and a draw
from their four matches, finishing ahead of Min Hill, Murray Anderson, Wendy Suttie and Leonie Spargo, who claimed second spot with three wins and 24 ends. Doug Kinvig, Heather Goodall, Laraine Mills and Jim Mills were third with three wins and 21 ends and Colin Dennis, Shane Calder, Alan Husband and Dave and Kath Muir who picked up three wins and 19 ends.
Country Mid Canterbury’s hopes of sneaking into the playoffs with a well-timed late run came to a crashing halt on the weekend, as they suffered a heavy defeat in the Tennis Canterbury Premier competition. Buoyed somewhat by a much better return to the court a week earlier, in which they claimed a draw, the side took on Burnside Park, who sat above them on the standings on the weekend but were unable to raise a yelp as they were beaten six matches to none in the tie. All four singles matches were straight set defeats, and the doubles fell the same way as the side were unable to make any inroads into the points difference between them and the top four sides in the competition. With three rounds of play remaining, it doesn’t get any easier either. Over the next two weeks they take on competition leaders Elmwood this week and then the currently second-ranked side, Burwood Park the following week, before rounding out the normal season against Bishopdale Te Kura Hagley. On Sunday the Country Mid Canterbury Division One side had a narrow victory against Burwood Park to keep themselves in contention. Both sides picked up three matches each in the tie, but the Mid Canterbury side edged ahead with one set more won than their rivals.
Tech sneak into T20 playoffs Matt Markham A solitary win during the pool stage of the South Canterbury T20 cricket competition has helped the Tech Stags sneak into playoffs contention – despite losing both matches on Saturday. After sitting out the middle double-round due to Covid impacting on the side following their win in the Tweedy Cup at the longer format of the game, the Stags were unable to get the winning feeling back on the weekend, losing to both Pleasant Point and Celtic. It was the same kind of day for the Allenton side as well – falling in both their matches against the same two sides as Tech, to finish last in the standings and miss out on playing knockout cricket this coming weekend. Due to sides in the competition being impacted by Omicron during pool play, South Canterbury cricket elected to take an average points approach to finding the finalists, with Tech’s win over Allenton in the opening round enough to see them sneak in as the fourth qualifier. They took on Pleasant Point in the opening match of the day on Saturday on the Ashburton Domain Oval. Bowling first, they kept their
rivals to under 100 – removing them for 95 in the 16th over. Matt Tait was in sublime form with the ball, claiming four wickets, with Sam Clark chipping in with two of his own. In reply, the Stags were in trouble early, losing both Jason Morrison and Des Kruger inside the first three overs, and despite some solid contributions from Harry Jones (20) and Matt Pawsey (26), fell short of their target as they were all out for 86. Over on the Domain Oval at the same time, Allenton were unable to withstand Celtic, with the scorecards for that match unavailable. Later in the afternoon, Tech hosted Celtic over the other side of the fence. Batting first they scored 87 in their 20 overs in the middle. Kruger led the charge with 21, while Clark (14) and Tait (18) added valuable runs as well. The target was always going to be a tricky one to defend and Celtic made it look easy, cruising to a nine-wicket victory – scoring the required runs within 10 overs to consolidate their place as top qualifiers. Allenton took on Pleasant Point, needing a win to give themselves a chance of making the top four, and nearly pulled it off. They restricted the Point side to 117-5 from their 20 overs, with Satwant Singh leading the bowling stats with 2-17 off his four overs.
Just the chance to get out and play some cricket was enough to put smiles on the Allenton team’s faces on the weekend. Allenton’s run chase started horrifically though. They lost two batsmen in the first over, and then another in the second to be three down without having scored a run. Their next two wickets fell in much the same manner, and at 28-5 they were in serious trouble.
Satwant Singh (39) and Satveer Singh (33) nearly turned the match around though, with a 59-run stand, but when they fell, Point made light work of the remaining batsmen to win by 17 runs. Tech will head to Temuka this
Saturday to play Temuka in the preliminary semi-final, with the winner of that match advancing to the major semi-final on Sunday to play the loser of the Celtic and Pleasant Point match, while the winner of that game advances straight to the final.

Dojo Ashburton on song at Canterbury Classic Mid Canterbury’s standing in the world of karate continues to prosper. After a huge few years on the mats where the results have flowed freely, JION International Karate Dojo Ashburton has been at it again on the weekend, producing incredible results at the Canterbury Classic 2022 Tournament in West Melton. The local group travelled north with 13 competitors for the day’s events, and came back to Ashburton with an impressive haul of 10 gold medals, six silver medals and seven bronze medals for their efforts. Under the watchful eye of chief instructor and coach, Sensei Thorsten Windhorst, the group were across all the results from the day, further underlining the progress that has been made locally. Sunday’s competition marked the first regional karate competition for four of the group, and they particularly performed well, winning four gold medals and three bronze medals between them. Competitors in each event compete in both Kata and Kumite – different variances of karate. Kata is based on forms, while Kumite is sparring against a partner. Two of the dojo’s group picked up gold medals in both of their events. Brooke Edmond, competing in the 9-year-old development category, managed gold in both Kata and Kumite while Elliott Ward – a noted sporting all-rounder – did the same in the 15-year-old Devel-
