National on the rise, but ‘work to be done’ – Luxon Jonathan Leask He’s pulled the party ahead in the polls, but Chris Luxon says there is a lot of work still to be done in the lead-up to the election next year. A lot of that work and National’s direction was laid out during his visit to Ashburton last week. Luxon said the polls were encouraging but “what they are telling us very clearly is there is a major cost of living crisis”. Proposed tax cuts, which includes an inflation-related adjustment to the tax brackets, are seen as a driver in the improved polling and there was plenty more populist policy from the National Party leader looking to build momentum into next year’s general election. He said National is “ruthlessly focused on outcomes” but all the talk on policy needs to deliver one outcome before all others, an election win. The Rangitata electorate was a National stronghold until the last election when Labour’s Jo Luxton claimed the seat by over 3500 votes. Luxon and his soon-to-be-named new candidate are faced with the challenge of swinging it, and others across the country, if they are to form the next Government. “We lost party vote in a lot of electorates across the country – in fact all electorates except for Epsom. “So what we have to do is actually focus on the issues that are really important and the number one that is important to everyone is the cost of living.” He said the party is attracting a number of high calibre potential candidates, including new faces, for vacancies across the country. The party came under fire for a lack of diversity in the selection process for a new Tauranga MP, but Luxon said “it comes down to the best person for the job”. The party is casting a wider net in searching for candidates looking for “the

The plan is to announce a new Rangitata candidate by the end of the year, kicking off the selection process soon. “We are definitely not taking this seat for granted and know we have work to do still.” A lot of that work revolves around challenging the Labour Government’s current work, including the Three Waters reforms and the health sector restructure. Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown quizzed Luxon on what National’s repeal of the Government’s Three Waters reform will look like. Luxon said it would be localism and empowering local communities by working with councils for solutions other than a “one-size fits all model”. Councils have been proposing a multi-

Part of the root cause for the Three Waters reforms is the issues around infrastructure funding, which impacts other sectors including roading, Luxon said. “We have to fundamentally rethink the financing mechanisms of infrastructure going forward.” He said there needed to be vision on the priority projects, creativity around finance, regulation that supports it, and execution. One piece of infrastructure that was first proposed in 2017 is the proposed four-laning of the highway from Rolleston to Ashburton which remains something Luxon said National is still right behind.

tude of ideas and alternatives, he said, but they have been frustrated by a Government that has had one model since day one. He also highlighted the issue of cross subsidisation – something the Ashburton and Selwyn councils are concerned about, how it will form a bureaucracy that is not responsive to local needs. He took aim at Labour’s confusing stance around co-governance, something National has no interest in. Luxon supports the introduction of the national water regulator, Taumata Arawai, to set and enforce the standards, and rather than forming a mega entity National would work with councils on regionally specific solutions that keep the assets in local hands. “There is a range of scenarios and solutions that’s available. The key aspect for us is maintaining the asset in local control.”

Mitchell smashes sprints record Daniel Alvey Records were smashed at this year’s street sprints. Overall winner Josh Mitchell was stoked to get his third win and beat his own record in the process. “I’m still bloody fizzing,” Mitchell said on Monday morning. He set a record breaking time of 2.20.1 in his top four run, the previous record being a 2.22.9 also set by him. Mitchell was surprised how fast the car was, after initially being concerned by the speed the cross karts had shown. “I just pushed the car hard.” “We put the new tyres on, which was probably the secret,” Mitchell said. Across the two-day event, put together by the Ashburton Car Club, people flocked to the Riverside Industrial Estate. Saturday started with a cold and dusty track, with drivers adjusting to the unique track. As the sun hit the track the times started to tumble. The cross karts showed their speed early, with the small, light, cars leading the pack. As the clouds ramped up on Sunday, so too did the intensity in the fight to stay in contention. Michael Skevington and Tim Dossett battled out in their modified Honda Civics with Skevington trumping the battle, finishing 13th and 16th respectively. Despite rain in the forecast on Sunday, the weather held back. “It was great the weather stayed good, it was a fair fight,” event commentator, John Skevington said. Knockouts continued until only the top four remained. The four went to battle and when the dust settled only Mitchell and Glenn Frew re-

Sporting excellence to be celebrated, for the 50th time Matt Markham The nominations are in, the winners are set to be judged and sporting excellence will be celebrated later this week at the Ashburton Guardian Mid Canterbury Sports Awards. At the Hotel Ashburton on Friday night, many of the district’s biggest sporting names will gather to celebrate another interrupted year of local, national and international sport as well as recognise the efforts of those behind the scenes in a volunteer role. And in 2022, the annual event is even more special. It will be the 50th edition of the awards and the 44th in which the Ashburton Guardian has been on board as a sponsor. And for Ashburton Guardian managing editor, Daryl Holden, that’s important. “It’s a special event on the calendar that we’re honoured to be a part of,” he said. “We tell the stories and detail the triumphs and tragedies of these individuals and groups throughout the year, but to be able to recognise so many of them and acknowledge the great and wonderful things they have achieved in the sporting realm is so important. “We’re privileged to have been able to help and support the awards over its history and we can’t wait to be a part of the celebrations later this week.”

Jan Cochrane During its history, the awards have only ever not been held on three occasions, from 1975, through to 1977 when there was no sponsor on board. The Ashburton Guardian came on board in 1978 and has remained closely aligned with the event ever since. This year’s awards have drawn 42 nominations across seven categories covering senior sportsperson, senior team, junior sportsperson, junior team, para-athlete, coach and the all-important volunteers division. “Given the challenging year that sport has endured, and the fact so many events have been cancelled or postponed getting 42 nominations for this year’s awards has far exceeded our expectations,” Ashburton’s Sport Canterbury regional manager, Jan Cochrane said. “I think what it really does go to show is that sports awards are still important and it’s great that we can recognise the achievements of everyone.” Some categories, such as the

junior and volunteer categories, aren’t judged, with every nominee being recognised on the night, but this week the judging panel sat down to pore their way through the nomination forms for the remaining categories. As well as the judged awards, the evening will also see a new local sporting legend added to the Mid Canterbury Sporting Hall of Fame and the prestigious Robilliard Trophy will again be award-

ed to an individual to commemorate their service to sport in the Mid Canterbury region. That particular award was first given out in 1983 with Norman Hawke the inaugural winner for his work in athletics. Since then, it’s been a noted award for many of the district’s most tireless and passionate workers behind the scenes who have ensured their chosen sport has continued to grow and prosper.

More than 200 people are expected to be in attendance at this year’s awards with national men’s handball representative, and now returned-local, James Cochrane overseeing the night as master of ceremonies. The Ashburton Guardian today begins its look at this year’s nominees across all categories and begins with the Junior Sportsperson and Senior Teams nominations on P20.

Last Supper in tapa cloth BY LILI HAYDON

The vastness of inland Mid Canterbury. The top of the penstocks at Coleridge hydro power station overlooks the Rakaia River.

Native plantings to mark name change Malcolm Hopwood Mid Canterbury power stations Lake Coleridge and Highbank are about to receive a makeover. To publicise its name change to Manawa Energy, Trustpower is supporting native planting and restoration projects in each of the regions where it operates hydroelectric power stations. Trustpower recently sold its

brand and retail business to Mercury but retained its commercial and industrial customer base and generation assets when confirming a name change last Friday with a promise to support native planting at Coleridge and Highbank. “Our contribution will help with land preparation, planting, ongoing maintenance and pest control,” Stephen Fraser, general manager of generation, said. “Manawa Energy owns and operates the most geographically dispersed set of energy assets in New Zealand. We’re proud to be part of communities throughout

the country, it’s our point of difference and one of our strengths.” Manawa, meaning heart, acknowledges the business’ heritage from its beginnings when it first established electricity generation in the Kaimai area during the early 1900s. Coleridge Power Station, commissioned in 1914, was New Zealand’s first major power station built and owned by the government. Manawa Energy is one of New Zealand’s largest electricity generators, responsible for around five per cent of the country’s renewable electricity generation.

A modernised Pasifika take on the Last Supper features in an exhibition at the Ashburton Art Gallery. Artists, Tui Emma Gillies and Sulieti Fieme’a Burrows, have been working on their ngatu (painted tapa cloth) piece, The Last Kai, since last December. The mother and daughter duo spent two weeks of long days and sleepless nights to get the piece finished in time. The process started with sourcing the feta’aki (white tapa cloth). “We already had sourced some from my mum Sulieti’s home village of Falevai in the Vava’u island group in Tonga,” Gillies said. In 2014, the pair went to Falevai to work on a collaborative ngatu project, called Falevai Flava, with the women from the village. “We discovered the women had stopped doing tapa art in favour of weaving and there weren’t even any paper mulberry trees growing on the

island.” So before the pair left they arranged for a crop to be planted. Tapa cloth is made from peeling the bark from the paper mulberry tree and, from that bark, removing the outer skin and then soaking and beating flat the inner skin. Gilles said prints of Leonardo Da Vinci’s The Last Supper are popular in Polynesian households. In the biblical story the apostles were all men but the pair decided if Jesus was alive today, he’d have women in his circle, so they made apostles of the women in their Da Vinci adaption. They also figured if Jesus healed the sick and protected the vulnerable, masks would be worn to limit the spreading of coronavirus. Burrows used kupesi stencils to do the background and traditional Tongan patterns for the borders and the flooring, while Gilles focused on painting the supper itself in the bright colours. The exhibition runs until June 19.

Ashburton feedlot the last bastion of M. bovis By Pat Deavoll New Zealand’s largest beef feedlot, to the east of Ashburton, is the last property to be infected with M. bovis and work to clear it will begin later this year. Federated Farmers plant biosecurity spokesperson and South Canterbury farmer Colin Hurst said, “We need to keep our foot on the throat of this disease. “Over the last few years 271 farms have been cleared of M. bovis and we’re down to just one infected property. “It does underline the huge costs and disruption that can be avoided when we stop these organisms from getting into New Zealand, or when they’re here, stop them from the wider spread in our herds and environment. “Our biosecurity personnel deserve proper resources to do their work well,” Hurst said. “This will be increasingly important as our borders open up to international passenger travel.” A $111 million injection for biosecurity in the May budget is a pragmatic acknowledgement of how vital it is to New Zealand’s economy we stop pest organisms at our borders, Hurst said. “This extra money shows an appreciation by the government that pest incursions can wreak havoc in our primary industries. “The funding announcement comes on the same day that we mark the fourth anniversary of New Zealand’s attempt to eradicate the cattle disease – indeed the $110.9m in the budget includes $68 million over the coming year to continue momentum on the M. bovis programme.” The world-first attempt to

The country’s largest beef feedlot, to the east of Ashburton, is the last property to be infected with M. bovis. eradicate the disease, which can cause lameness, mastitis and abortions in cows, began after it was first detected on a South Canterbury farm in 2017. Since then, the disease has been confirmed and cleared from 271 properties, with more than 176,000 cattle culled. Minister of Agriculture Damien O’Connor said no working farms were currently infected – the lone property was the large beef feedlot.

“Though we can’t rule out occasional finds elsewhere, we think it’s the right time to consider the future framework for the M. bovis Eradication Programme. “Our partners, including the Ministry for Primary Industries, are working on a transition of the M. bovis Eradication Programme to an agency under a National Pest Management Plan (NPMP). “We are at an important juncture. We are aiming to move from delimiting – controlling the last

known pockets of the disease – to provisional absence. This will be followed by significant surveillance testing of herds around the country to provide assurance there are no undetected pockets of disease.” Of the money announced last week, $42.9m would cover biosecurity measures offshore, at the border and domestically, as well as managing incursions in the country. “The world is reopening from

the pandemic. With increased travel alongside a warming climate, we face challenges from pests and diseases, which requires further investments to strengthen our biosecurity system,” O’Connor said.

Farmer feedback results in changes to wintering rules Pat Deavoll Ongoing work by the farming sector has resulted in the Government making significant changes to make wintering rules much more practical on-farm. The Government had announced that significant changes had been made to several winter grazing requirements. Federated Farmers Provincial President David Clark said the changes were closer to reflecting reality. “It would have saved a whole lot of angst if the Government had genuinely consulted with the people who have to comply with the rules,” he said. “It has been two-and-a-half years of scrapping and fighting and a complete waste of resources on both sides of the argument. It’s a poor way of setting public policy. “There is still some way to go, but some of the rules were just downright stupid and they had to be got rid of. “For instance, the pugging rule – that was nonsense and so hard to quantify.

David Clark: the pugging rule – that was nonsense and so hard to quantify. “And sowing by October 1 – once again nonsense. To go back to a pragmatic approach to sow the crop as soon after the completion of grazing makes much more sense. “And what is still far too broad and subjective is the classification of a critical source area – a hollow in a paddock that water

will flow down into. This is now closer to reflecting reality.” The changes announced by Government were that: ■ Paddocks would need to be resown following winter cropping as soon as conditions allow, instead of by a fixed date. ■ Rules about pugging depth in paddocks had been removed

PHOTO SUPPLIED

and replaced with a requirement that farmers took steps to minimise the effects of pugging on freshwater. ■ Farmers must protect critical source areas, by not cultivating and grazing them during the winter grazing period from May to September. ■ Farmers who carried out win-

ter grazing in paddocks with slopes over 10 degrees would also need to either obtain a resource consent or include how they would mitigate risks in their certified freshwater farm plan once these were available. DairyNZ general manager for sustainable dairy David Burger said the changes addressed farmer concerns that the rules were impractical and unclear and wouldn’t improve environmental or animal welfare outcomes. He said the dairy sector had made a significant improvement in wintering practices over the past two years. “Last season, 80 per cent of dairy farmers had a wintering plan at the start of the season and 89 per cent also had a contingency plan to protect their animals and the environment in bad weather.” He said DairyNZ, the farming sector, and farmers were already planning for the coming winter and were continuing to work together to raise the standard of wintering practices.

Dairy farmers invited to join SIDE 2022 in Oamaru Pat Deavoll A diverse range of keynote speakers and workshops will offer inspired thinking to help solve farming challenges at the South Island’s largest dairy event – SIDE 2022, in Oamaru. SIDE (South Island Dairy Event) will be held on June 8-9. It is run by farmers, for farmers, and chairperson Anna Wakelin said this year’s event theme is ‘dynamic’. “As farmers, we are operating in a dynamic world and we always need to change and improve to stay on top of our game,” she said. “To help farmers remain dynamic, SIDE 2022 is hosting a range of exciting speakers from different professions, who have

innovative solutions to tough farming challenges. “SIDE will also give farmers the opportunity to take part in a wide range of practical workshops, and to discover the latest dairy technology and research.” Former Rocket Lab engineer Craig Piggott will share how he found solutions to help his dairy farmer parents reduce their working hours. This search led him to launch Halter, a technology company that has developed a farming system that allows farmers to easily move and manage their herd through software. Craig is the winner of the 2020 New Zealand Hi-Tech Young Achiever award. 42 Below vodka founders, Geoff Ross and Justine Ross, will share how they swapped life in Auckland for an Otago high country sheep farm. With exhibition space already sold out, we encourage farmers to register soon to avoid missing out on SIDE this year,” Wakelin said. Farmers can also join four of 14 practical workshops on a wide range of topics from wintering to milk futures, reproduction, plantain, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. SIDE 2022 is being held for the first time in Oamaru. The event will be held at the Oamaru Opera House and the Brydone Hotel, with the dinner being Steampunk themed.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Often when an artist creates a masterpiece inertia takes over and carries the action for a long stretch. A beautiful rut is still a rut. You are the artist. Stay active in the design of your life. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Here come the unexpected stimuli and restraints. You roll with this sort of thing, having learned lessons in control long ago. Managing every little thing is a waste of time. Let it inspire you instead. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): There’s almost nothing you can successfully accomplish using just your mind today. Unless your body and spirit are involved, the thing will fall flat and prove unworthy of further attention. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Collaborate with everybody. Outsiders, insiders, customers, critics – they all help to illuminate the task at hand. Brilliance is an emergent quality of diverse groups. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): The thing that looks easy may have taken a person hours or years to create. This is something to keep in mind before you start the discussion, compliment, criticise or follow in kind. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): “The future is here,” said science-fiction writer William Gibson. “It’s just not widely distributed yet.” You’ll aid in that distribution today with your forward-thinking contribution. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): What people expect of you could cheer you on. However, you probably feel more like those expectations are looming over you, nagging and negging you. This is a sure sign that you need a break. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Those moments, like a zephyr of mental chaos through your brain, can serve to energise you if you relax and let it blow through. It leaves little behind, but what does remain will be a gift from the ether. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Why waste your time being disappointed at people who will never change when there’s a whole world of gogetters out there waiting to help you with your next idea? CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): What’s happening in an interaction is nuanced. The terms of the agreement aren’t the real exchange; that involves a subconscious tender too raw for one or more parties to recognise or admit to. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Gaming sharpens skills that will have real-world consequences. The game you thought was pointless is actually the entire point, only in metaphoric form and much plays out just as the game did. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You’ve so many options that it would be easy to spread yourself too thin. To avoid burnout, decide what you need and make sure those requirements are a top priority before you say yes to anything else.

Awarding Mid Canty’s sports stars R

oll out the red carpet, suit up in your fancy dancy gear because it’s that time of the year again. That’s the 2022 version of the Ashburton Guardian Mid Canterbury Sports Awards at Hotel Ashburton this Friday. It’s a function that means a lot to the Guardian, and it’ll have even more riding on it than usual. It’ll be the 50th edition of the annual awards, which recognises and celebrates all things sport, which is so much a key part of the fabric of life in Mid Canterbury. That’s certainly the case in our district where a combination of an excellent climate, first-class facilities, passionate volunteers and coaches, and natural talent makes for a potent combination. Even allowing for the impact

Daryl Holden Covid-19 has had on sport in the past 12 months, with many events cancelled, postponed and disrupted, the nomination numbers for Friday’s prizegiving have been excellent. Try 32 nominations received across junior, senior, masters, teams, officials and administrator categories. The prestigious Robilliard Trophy, recognising outstanding services to sport, is one of those special awards on the agenda because it recognises selfless long-time devotees, who basically make sport happen.

All the usual codes are again represented but special mention should be made of having five nominees in the para-athlete award.

teers will also be recognised on what will again be a special night that doesn’t just recognise success because, as we know, not all those who strive actually

prestigious Robilliard Trophy is one “ The of those special awards on the agenda

because it recognises selfless long-time devotees

Para continues to be one of the big movers and growth areas in the recreation and sporting industry in New Zealand and internationally, and to have five athletes nominated out of Mid Canterbury is a credit to them and the sports they represent. Some of our super volun-

succeed. That’s where the role of awards and public recognition is so important. Because awards also recognise many other qualities like ability, struggle, effort and, above all, excellence. And for the Guardian? Well, we’re just privileged to be involved in the sports awards

for half a century and counting, simply to ensure the event continues and is promoted in the right way. Our involvement is one of the things that separates us from a run of the mill news media organisation, which focuses only on reporting the news. We do that too, obviously, but we also see ourselves as a community leader. It’s why we feel the need to support, stand up for and celebrate the great things that go on in Mid Canterbury. And few things are worth celebrating and recognising than sporting success, often against the odds. That’s why Friday’s event is so important to us and to our district. Good luck to all the nominees and your supporters. You’ve already done yourselves proud.

Ashburton Guardian Mid Canterbury Sports Awards Fifty years of the Ashburton Guardian Mid Canterbury Sports Awards will be celebrated this Friday night. We begin the week’s celebrations of sporting excellence by working through the nominations for the various awards on offer on the night, starting today with Junior Sportsperson and Senior Teams. Tayla Davidson – Karate

■■ Junior Sportsperson Jake Parsons – Tennis

With a ranking of No.3 in New Zealand for the 15-year-old age group, Jake Parsons is a tennis star on the rise. Not that he hasn’t shone in previous years, but the past 12 months have been a real progression for the young ace as he’s advanced his game. He’s picked up major titles in Wellington and Canterbury this past year, as well as competing in national representative events with great distinction and success. A determined and passionate player, Jake also lends his talents towards helping as much as he can at the Mid Canterbury Tennis Centre with training and in local competitions.

Charlotte McKenzie – Smallbore One of the most exciting young shooters in New Zealand, Charlotte continues to pile up the results on the range, gaining selection into national teams and competing well beyond her years against peers with decades of experience on their shoulders. A member of the New Zealand smallbore Under 21 side this year Charlotte finished runner-up in the National Schools’ Postal Championships out of 168 competitors, bettered by just one point in the overall standings. She’s also been a part of the Ashburton College Whitcoulls team who were national champions and the Target Shooting Mid Canterbury Junior and National District teams who were South Island and national champions respectively.

Sophie Lampe – Triathlon Sophie Lampe is a rising star to watch for the future. It’s been a huge month of competing across New Zealand for the young talent which culminated in her success in the National Under 13 Triathlon Championships recently where she dominated the field. She’s won triathlons across the South Island in her age group, including the Challenge Wanaka event, and shown her adaptability with victories in numerous cross-country events, including the Canterbury Zone final and also finished fourth in the Inter Regionals Cross Country where she was the first South Island competitor across the line.

Rishaan Kumar – Athletics There’s a lot to look forward to on the athletics track for Rishaan Kumar. The talented youngster has produced excellent results over the past 12 months as part of the Ashburton Athletics team, including a gold medal at the Canterbury Championships in the illustrious 100 metre sprint event, which he then followed up with a silver in the 200m and a bronze in the long jump. Rishaan also claimed a bronze at the pinnacle of athletics events for youngsters, the Colgate Games in the 200 metres. Ashburton Athletics champion for his age group, Rishaan is a hard trainer and an inspiring athlete to his peers – always finishing with a smile.

Riley Breen. Hannah King has made the water her own over the past year, even if Covid has scuttled many of the meets she had her eyes on attending. Her crowning glory for the year came at the National Age Group Championships, where she smashed all her previous best times to become a national title holder in the 15-year-old 200 metre breaststroke with a remarkable swim. She added to her tally at those championships with a bronze in the 1500m freestyle as well. A tireless worker both in and out of the water in her training, Hannah is determined to continue to improve her skillset, and works hard with more than 15 hours a week of training as she looks forward to a hopefully uninterrupted campaign this year.

Josh Gilbert – Tennis Despite his young age, Josh Gilbert can already lay claim to being a New Zealand representative. Ranked No.3 in the country for his age group, the young hotshot wore the silver fern of his country in the Under 11 Boys’ Australian Junior Trans Tasman Teams event in Queensland. As well as that, he’s competed both in singles and doubles play in tournaments across the country over the past 12 months, racking up the good results and further advancing his game to the point where he’s now a well known player on the court wherever he goes. A determined player in the local club scene as well as on the bigger stage, Josh’s dedication to his sport is set to see him shine well into the future.

Joshua Eketone – Athletics

Hannah King – Swimming

Named Ashburton Athletics most promising senior competitor, Joshua Eketone is making all the right moves. With his hard training schedule, he’s really shone over the past 12 months, and it all culminated in a huge effort at the annual Colgate Games where he picked up the silver medal in the discus event with a huge 35.40m throw, only narrowly missing out on the gold medal. At the same event in Invercargill, Joshua also placed fifth in the shot put with another big throw over more than 10 metres. He mixes his athletics commitments with rugby where he is a rising star as well, representing both his school and Mid Canterbury in the Under 14 and a half age group.

Hannah King.

Olivia Easton is a bit of a sporting all-rounder. While athletics is her nominated sport, it’s clear to see she’s talented in anything she chooses to put her mind to as well. Juggling tennis, netball and gymnastics as well as her time on the track and field she’s performed with distinction. Olivia picked up a bronze medal at the Colgate Games in the long jump and the correlated that talent onto the gymnastics mat where she picked up Ashburton’s most improved title in the senior age group through some outstanding results across the year in various competitions. With a great attitude to anything she puts her hand to, Olivia has plenty to look forward too.

Olivia Easton – Athletics

Not even an interrupted year due to Covid has stopped Tayla Davidson from grabbing results across the board over the past 12 months. The young karate talent was selected for the New Zealand side for the Oceania Championships, only for it to be postponed, but it came on the back of some excellent results including being the New Zealand champion for the third year running in kumite. She also picked up the South Island Secondary Schools’ kumite title as well as finishing second in kata. To challenge herself even further, Tayla stepped up a weight division at the annual New Zealand Cup where she came away with a silver medal. As well as her karate achievements, Tayla has also showcased her talents on the softball diamond, where she was named MVP at the South Island Secondary School Championships.

Riley Breen – Tennis There’s plenty to look forward to for young tennis player, Riley Breen – but also plenty to look back on with pride too. Riley is currently the No.1 ranked player in both singles and doubles in New Zealand for players 13 years old, but was also recently adjudged to be the No.1 player for 14-year-old players as well. An impressive effort for a 12-year-old. Selected for the Tennis New Zealand team to compete in Thailand at the Junior Worlds Championship, Covid meant the team didn’t go. Riley lives and breathes tennis and his exploits on the court have earned him national recognition as he’s picked up titles across the South Island and further afield.

Riley Sa – Basketball Riley Sa is a name to keep an eye on for the future. A young basketballer with a huge amount of talent, and one who is making a name for himself across the country. A Canterbury age group representative, he can lay claim to being part of a national championship-winning side and with that has come selection into New Zealand sides including the National Under 18 selection camp earlier this year. Such is his talent, he’s also been identified for the future by the Canterbury Rams, who compete in the National Basketball League, and took part in their training squad for the first stage of the season this year. Quiet and unassuming off the court, Riley is a beast the moment he steps onto it, demanding respect from his rivals and there’s a lot more to come in the future for this star baller.

Mid Canterbury National District Shooting Championship Team

Up against some of the best shooters in the land, the Mid Canterbury National District championship side again flew the Mid Canterbury flag both with distinction and in success over the past 12 months. The National District Championships are split into two leagues, determined not by quality but by the number of shooters an area can have in their team and Mid Canterbury were the dominant force in the B League, working their way into the final to

The Tech Stags.

beat Otago with a dominant performance. Their dominance across all age groups, grade levels and experience was the cornerstone to their success as they claimed the title for the fourth consecutive year, winning all sections, open, composite and junior teams in the final to clean-sweep the title.

Technical Cricket Club Senior Team After joining the South Canterbury senior cricket competition two years ago, the Stags wasted no time in making their mark on their new competition as they were crowned champions of the Tweedy Cup, the pinnacle of South Canterbury Cricket in just their second appearance. After their debut season, the team worked hard to bring their level of cricket up to the standard of those around them in the 2021/2022 season, and brought down the defending champions, who had only lost three matches in the previous two years of cricket. A popular host for visiting teams, the Stags showed warm Mid Canterbury hospitality to their visitors and put on a professional display in the final with a complete team performance. The side also had a shot at the T20 competition during the season as well, but the impacts of Covid meant they were forced to pull out of the competition in the knockout stages.

Mid Canterbury Senior Men’s Hockey Team A change in the way Mid Canterbury hockey approaches its season last year paved the way for the region to send to a team to Christchurch to compete in the Canterbury Hockey Division One competition, and the Senior Men’s side went close to making it a perfect start in their return. Travelling to Christchurch each week, sometimes twice, to compete against some of the best sides in the Canterbury region, they worked hard throughout the competition and made their mark, earning a spot in the season’s grand final where they finished runner-up to the talented Southern side in the final. The team finished the season with eight wins and six draws from their 18 matches to qualify fourth before knocking over the top seeds to earn their way into the final. A great debut in a tough competition.

Methven Bowling Club Division One Sevens Stepping into the mix for the season’s Division One Sevens championship, initially no one gave the Methven Bowling Club much more than a second glance – but by the time the finals rolled around, everyone knew who they were. Up against stronger, much more populated bowling clubs from around the Canterbury region, the side won their way through pool play and then worked through the post-section stage to knock over some big names in the sport of bowls to set up a final against the powerhouse Elmwood Club. They couldn’t quite pull off the remarkable and win the title, but went within a whisker while up against a number of past and present New Zealand champions. The result paved the way for a number of the side’s players to go on to bigger and better things including representative sides throughout the season.

Currie goes close to the top of the world Matt Markham For more than just a few moments, Braden Currie was on a path toward being a world champion on the weekend. The former Mount Hutt College student, who is now based out of Wanaka, looked like he was going to achieve something special as he led the pack in the Ironman World Championships in St George, Utah early on Sunday morning – but the incredible effort of two other competitors over the concluding stages of the race meant he had to settle for third, still a remarkable achievement on the biggest of world stages. And, in a way only a Kiwi could describe it, Currie summed up his emotions succinctly in the immediate aftermath. “I’m well cooked, but I’m stoked.” After a strong swim, in which he left the water as part of a lead pack of five, Currie kept his momentum up through the bike leg before unleashing on the run – his strongest leg – to build a decent lead of more than three minutes. It took Olympic gold medal cham-

pion, Kristian Blummenfelt, to run him down with around 15km to go on the run, and then Currie didn’t have enough to hold out the late challenge of Canadian Lionel Sanders, who grabbed him inside the final stages to push him back into third position. After a nearly three-year hiatus, Currie was happy to be back on the world stage and upon reflecting on his performance, he could only find positives. “After training for the unknown for almost three years now, today was a great reward,” he said. “I had an awesome day of racing. “Everything fell my way, I had a great swim, and we had a fantastic group on the bike that was so honest, consistent and settled – you could just see that we rolled away from the others without having to sink ourselves. “I ran the way I always do and gave it as much as I could. I didn’t feel amazing, but looking at the times now, they were still pretty fast.” The performance qualified Currie to compete at the second World Championships of the year, this time in Kona, Hawaii in October. And after a result like his on the weekend, the Methven-raised athlete will be one they’ll all be talking about in the lead-up as he looks to go two places better than his outstanding achievement on the weekend.

Stalemate under the mountain Matt Markham Methven and Celtic kept their playoff hopes alive in Combined Country Rugby on the weekend, but there’s a mountain to climb for Rakaia. Celtic fought out a narrow victory over Kaiapoi to win 1510, while Methven and Lincoln couldn’t be split at 19-all on the Methven Domain. Both sides remain right in the hunt for a top two or top three spot in their respective pools with just three weeks of the normal season remaining. But Rakaia, who were beaten 35-18 by Ohoka on Saturday afternoon, will need points from all three of those remaining matches – including their local derby with Southern this week – if they’re to

Short and sharp Methven 19 (Manasa Bari 2, Manasa Vula tries, Tom Reekie 2 conv.) drew with Lincoln 19. HT: 14-7 Celtic 15 (Raitube Vasurakuta 2 tries, Nathan McCloy pen, conv.) beat Kaiapoi 10. HT: 5-7 Rakaia 18 (Dale McAlwee, Gordon Hausia, Harry Ashworth tries, Thomas Whittaker pen) lost to Ohoka 35. HT: 13-17.

make any sort of claim. They started well on the weekend, scoring first half tries through Dale McAlwee and Gordon Hausia and a penalty to Thomas Whittaker to be down by four at the break. An early try and a penalty to the home side in the second half drew them clear before a Harry Ashworth try offered some hope for Rakaia, but Ohoka rounded out the match to win it comfortably, leaving Rakaia middle of the pack in their pool. They’ve got games against Southern, Springston and Hornby remaining, and would need to win at least two of those to give themselves a chance. Out at Kaiapoi, Celtic supporters could have been forgiven for feeling like they had a little déjà vu watching their side in action. It’s been nervous watching for the green machine faithful this season so far, with tight games and no definite answers until the final whistle in all of their matches, and Saturday was no different. An early Raitube Vasurakuta try set the intent for the Celtic side, but Kaiapoi bounced back on halftime to grab a try of their own and take a 7-5 lead into the break. That lead was extended to five points with a penalty shortly after halftime, before a Nathan McCloy penalty drew things close again. From the kick-off of that penalty, Vasurakuta got himself into clear space again and grabbed his second of the day, with McCloy adding the extras to see Celtic take the lead again at 1510, and they managed to keep it that way until the final whistle for a well-deserved win. The result sees them shift to

Methven’s Manasa Bari on the charge during his side’s draw with Lincoln on the weekend. second on the standings in their pool, with a big clash at home this weekend against Prebbleton at Keenans Road. In Methven, the hosts were out to make it three-from-three in the competition against the previously unbeaten Lincoln side, and for the majority of the match they led, before a late try levelled the scores up and a draw was played out, in front of a good crowd. It didn’t start well for the Methven side though, with a Lincoln try within the first three minutes seeing them grab a seven-point lead.

But just as he did a week earlier against Darfield, Manasa Bari made his mark on the match with two tries within five minutes of each other to see Methven wrestle the lead back, and with Tom Reekie adding both conversions they led 14-7 after 12 minutes. In a titanic arm wrestle, neither side scored again in the first half, and for the majority of the second either. A Lincoln try after 60 minutes saw the scores back to level, but when Manasa Vula crossed over out wide with less than 10 min-

Slow start; whirlwind finish for men’s side Matt Markham One up, one down – but a good weekend of hockey. That’s the best way to determine the efforts of the two Mid Canterbury senior hockey sides over the weekend as they continued to ply their trade in Hockey Canterbury’s Division One competition. The men’s side kept their march rolling with a dominant 6-1 win over High School Old Boys while the women’s team suffered a heavy loss to a very sharp team from the same club later in the day, losing 1-5. The men’s team settled into their work nicely in the opening quarter of their match, but were unable to come away with a goal for their efforts in a scoreless first stage. The second half started well too, but a lapse saw High School Old Boys grab an early 1-0 lead, which really woke the Mid Canterbury side up and got them into gear with Sam Bennett scoring the team’s first for the day to take the game to a 1-all scoreline at halftime. With a focus on bringing positivity back to the game at the break, Mid

Hayden Sinclair grabbed a brace for the Mid Canterbury Senior Men’s hockey side on the weekend. Canterbury started strong, and within a minute were hot on attack with Hayden Sinclair blasting one past the keeper to put his side in the lead. Then in the final two minutes before the end of the third quarter, Mid

Canterbury really got into their work. Sinclair grabbed his second and then through a stage of excellent play across the turf Scott Marshall was in the right spot to convert, then in the final acts of the quarter, Mid Canterbury again attacked, and Marshall was again in the right spot to grab his second for the day and Mid Canterbury took a 5-1 lead into the final quarter. James Wright swept Mid Canterbury’s sixth for the day into the goal halfway through the final quarter and the side rounded out the match with another very convincing victory. Later in the afternoon, at Marist Park, the Mid Canterbury Women’s side looked to back up their first win of the season seven days earlier with another victory, but found themselves under the pump quickly. Two quick goals by HSOB had them on the back foot, and they looked out of the match until six minutes into the second quarter when goal-scoring machine, Sam Dalziel, found some space and made the most of it to bring the margin back to one goal, which it stayed until the end of the half. Opportunities to draw level presented in the second half, but Mid Canterbury were unable to grab them and HSOB hit their stride, grabbing three second half goals to win comfortably 5-1.

utes to go, the Methven faithful looked set to celebrate only for an 80th minute try to Lincoln to bring the score back to level and round the match out at 19-all. Methven are back at home again this weekend, hosting Oxford. The match could prove pivotal to whether or not they make the playoffs with a game against the unbeaten Southbridge still lying in wait before the playoff teams are decided. Southern sat out the weekend’s play with the bye.

Local duo score national b-ball awards Two of the cornerstones of the sport of basketball in Mid Canterbury gained national recognition at the Basketball New Zealand Awards ceremony on the weekend. Mindy Morrison and Pauline Anderson were jointly, along with one other person, awarded the Cedric Cudby Volunteer Award as part of the night’s celebrations in the Banquet Hall at Parliament House on Saturday night. The duo, who have given tirelessly to basketball in the Mid Canterbury region for more than a decade each, were presented their awards during the evening. Morrison, who has been involved with Basketball Mid Canterbury for 15 years, has acted as a coach, a manager and an administrator, working tirelessly to help offer pathways for young players ensuring the future of the game remains strong. Her citation noted her work with the Association’s 3x3 pilot programme and the very successful Girls Got Game scheme, but also her work with social, mixed and women’s basketball. She also acts as the manager of the Canterbury Wildcats. Anderson’s involvement strikes a similar tone. A crucial member of Basketball Mid Canterbury for more than 10 years, she’s worked behind the scenes as a team manager, committee member and treasurer. But her association with the sport doesn’t start and end there. A mother to two representative players, she’s been involved right the way through, managing teams and playing the most important role of a parent on the sidelines. Anderson’s tireless work behind the scenes has helped to ensure both the stability and viability of the Mid Canterbury association.
