Median barrier plan proceeding Jonathan Leask

A project that Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown has referred to as “ropes down the middle of the road” is progressing towards implementation. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is still planning its safety improvements along State Highway 1 between Ashburton and Rolleston. The overall project is broken into thirds and the stretch from the Rakaia River to the Waikirikiri/Selwyn River is first up. A Waka Kotahi spokeswoman confirmed that the median barrier installation is in the detailed design phase and key stakeholders are being contacted. “It is being developed based on

previous feasibility work and focuses on safety improvements.” The funding and a timeframe for construction is not yet confirmed, she said. The design will include shoulder widening for agricultural vehicles and existing passing lanes will not be removed. The Waikirikiri/Selwyn River to Templeton section is in the feasibility design stage while the Rakaia to Ashburton section of the project remains on hold. Earlier this year, NZTA regional relationships director James Caygill told the council that based on available resources Waka Kotahi had focused the next period of work “on the most important stretch in terms of deaths and serious injury reduction”. Caygill said feasibility work is also under way for the stretch of road from the Selwyn River north to Rolleston which leaves the third segment of the full cor-

ridor, from Rakaia to Ashburton, yet to be done. At that meeting in February, Brown was critical of the plans to install the median barriers and believed Waka Kotahi would have received feedback suggesting they look at alternative safety measures. Brown also made note that the National party continues to promise to four-lane the State Highway 1 from Rolleston to Ashburton if they are elected, something Chris Luxon confirmed during his visit to Ashburton last week.

Sunday fun day for four-wheel drivers Fun day Sunday

What: 4X4 skills day When: 11.30am Sunday, May 15 Where: Mid Canterbury 4WD park, end of Cochranes Road. Contact: John McDonald 021 464 939

The Mid Canterbury Four Wheel Drive Club is making preparations for a busy Sunday at the park. To bookend the Wheels Week fortnight, the club will be hosting a skills day at the 4WD park at the end of Cochranes Road. Club president Steve Adam said there will be about 56 trucks coming along to have some fun in the park. The day will allow people to try any skill level track they want, with club members on marshal duty to help guide people through the track. Adam said the day is really about providing people with advice to up-skill their driving and give people more confidence on the tracks. Club captain John McDonald has done a lot of work behind the scenes to set the day up, to make sure it will run as smoothly as possible. The park was set up to give people a space to wheel off the river bed when birds are nesting. “ECan gave us the blessing to set up the park here, and we are very grateful for that,” Adam said. Adam said he wants to advocate to the government to allow more spaces like the park to be set up across New Zealand as a space for four-wheel-drivers to go and have some fun, while protecting the outdoors at the same time.

Pakeke Lions have a bargain for you Malcolm Hopwood “It’s like opening the chook house door.” Dave Bennett is describing the customer rush when Ashburton Pakeke Lions opens the doors to its charity market. The market on May 28/29, is the biggest garage sale in Mid Canterbury and, in previous years, up to 200 people have been waiting for the 9am opening on Saturday morning. This year’s charity market was meant to be held in January, but Covid has delayed it until May. “We want to get in now before there’s another pandemic,” Bennett, who’s the Pakeke Lions secretary, said. The Lions have accumulated hundreds of goods including furniture, kitchen, collectables, sports, garden, workshop, crafts,

cakes and produce which they want totally cleared by 1pm on Sunday. The goods are stored out of town and will be installed on site ready for the May 28 opening. Pakeke Lions are still accepting more and are keen to receive quality saleable items at the former RX Plastics building, this year’s site at 445 West Street, from May 24 to 26. The building has been made available by the Murney Trust. “This is our major fundraiser for the year and, together with other donations, we give all the proceeds to local charities,” charity market convenor, Joe Butchard said. “We’ve been going since the 1980s. “Last year we gave nearly $20,000 to 15 different charities and we’re hoping for a similar amount in 2022. “People are looking for bargains so everything must go,” Bennett said. “We’re very competitive with our prices.”

Housing project set to start Daniel Alvey Haven Housing is a month away from breaking ground on its $2.2 million project to build new homes for the low income elderly. The Haven Housing Trust currently has $1.3 million in the bank with a further $1.1 million still to fundraise. Founding trustee Jackie Girvan said the project has been a long time coming. The group received the site in 2020, but had to demolish the eight old buildings on it to clear the way for the 17 new 50 square metre apartments. These will be available to the elderly community, with rental prices below the market rate. “They would be about $200 per week,” said Girvan, adding the average rental rate in Ashburton was about $250 per week. These prices exclude the cost of the utilities.

The site of Haven Housing’s new low income elderly housing project next to Mona Square will have the ground broken in a month’s time. PHOTO DANIEL ALVEY The need for low budget housing is on the rise with more people getting to retirement age, not having owned a home, or moving to fixed income and having less money to spend on a home. Girvan said the homes’ residents will be on low or fixed incomes and have minimal assets. In Ashburton there are currently 24 people on waiting lists for elder accommo-

• • •

dation, nine wanting single units and 15 wanting double units. The Ashburton District Council will lease the land to the trust for 50 years. The homes will feature lots of insulation and double glazing to make them as warm as possible. The trust is a charitable organisation, and has six trustees and a secretary. All are doing the work unpaid to ensure the pro-

ject can be as low cost as possible. Girvan said there was a wide range of experience in the trustee group, including architect David Chilton, and long time builder Walter Van Der Kley. Any contributions that could be made to the charity would mean a lot. Girvan said there has been a lot of investment in the project to get it off the ground, but more is still needed. “Anyone can donate to the trust, even $5, it is all appreciated,” Girvan said. The trust has a goal to reach 100 homes for the elderly. Girvan said the trust had chosen to focus on the elderly for its social housing projects, with Kainga Ora and the council putting more families in their social houses. The homes are designed to be forever homes for the elderly, and the trust will do regular checks on the residents, and undertake some of the cleaning tasks such as windows and gardens, making it like being in a retirement village without the cost. The houses will be built next to Mona Square, and have a current estimation of a one-year build time, depending on the availability of building products such as wallboard.

Harnessing the power within Malcolm Hopwood Life is a gift, don’t waste it, you never know when it might be ripped away. Lesley Gill, formerly from Ashburton, lives by those words, so much so she’s written a book about harnessing the power within. Lesley, an Associate Professor at Otago Polytechnic’s Business School, struggled at Ashburton College and left without School Certificate. “I wasn’t mature enough and went into exams terrified. I didn’t learn the structure of studying. It was only as an adult, that I got the qualifications I needed,” she said. A Bachelor of Philosophy from Massey University led to a Master of Applied Management. But it wasn’t enough for Gill. Through her own experience she saw the need to share her research and findings with others. It led to a book, Exploring Practical Perspectives of Emotional Intelligence, where she focuses on people’s thinking, emotions, what we say and how we act. “It’s written for those who want to grow through life’s successes and struggles, but might not know where to start,” she said. Chapters on self-awareness, resilience, empathy, compassion, fatigue, grief and loss, rejection, spiritual well-being and manag-

ing emotions are presented within the pages. Throughout it, Gill asks searching questions such as “what is it that makes people succeed?”. Her answers include utilising the intelligent use of emotions and thinking, to make wise and appropriate decisions and following through until outcomes are achieved. “If I can dream it, I can do it, start climbing,” she said. “We run on autopilot so we need to acknowledge that our lens isn’t the only perspective in a situation.” Her book, written last year, takes academic-speak and puts it into everyday language for people, particularly those in management roles. “We’ll teach them technical and managerial skills, but not human qualities that will make them the great leaders of the future,” she said. While her career has taken her away from home, she believes Ashburton people don’t do well at listening. If they did it would improve their life experiences. One chapter is based on developing the spiritual part of our inner lives and emotions, based on a Christian perspective of spirituality and wellbeing. She asks whether the “new school” at Ashburton College has put holistic development in place as part of its learning programme. “They should not just teach content, but how to develop the person and take an individualised consideration of each student,” she said.

Right – Lesley Gill came home this week to visit family and shared her book, Exploring Practical Perspectives of Emotional Intelligence, with the Ashburton Guardian.

Rakaia meeting world lily demand Lili Haydon

Van Zanten Flowerbulbs in Rakaia exports millions of lilies around the world. Van Zanten Flowerbulbs New Zealand is a large scale operation of processing, packing, preparation, storage and export of lily bulbs nationally and internationally to meet the global demand for lilies. That demand equates to around 25 million lily bulbs which are of the oriental and OT hybrid varieties. Field manager Anton Warmerdam said Rakaia’s climate and soil conditions were deemed to be perfect to cultivate the lily bulbs and they have been operating since 2001. Shed manager Amber Li said the demand is mainly from Asia, but they also export to the USA, Africa and the Netherlands which is also where the company’s main headquarters is. They provide customers with bulbs from September to March. This is in addition to the availabilty of the northern hemisphere lily bulbs.

But Covid caused some technical issues for them and their team of 10 local permanent staff. Seasonal workers were harder to come by, as well as shipping containers. India which used to import two containers of lilies, now only orders one container due to the economic effects of Covid still plaguing their country. During lockdown they even had to get permission from the Ministry of Primary Industries to keep working to make sure their hard work wasn’t wasted. But as winter planting is now upon them Li is excited to be able to hire some international staff. “They love the fact we are close to the mountains,’’ Li said. From May they harvest and process the planting material and then replant from June until July. But just like the wineries, they have to be careful during winter that the crops do not get frosted. The bulbs in the Netherlands are protected against frost with fleece nets. Luckily since Rakaia is a rural area, helicopters are allowed to be used to mix the cold air on the ground with the warm air from above to prevent frost setting in. “Usually this doesn’t happen often, but a few years ago they had them flying over the crop five times,” Warmerdam said.

Mind Plus funding a battle

ing gifted,” she said. “The programme is very important to them to find like minds and be accepted for who they are. It focuses on personal development, understands giftedness and how it affects them.” Simons explains Mind Plus is “still school” and the subjects are aligned to the school curriculum but the students develop strengths and talents they’re good at. “It’s a rich curriculum and I’m always learning something new,” she said. “For many children, it makes a huge difference because their needs are being met.” Their talents are demonstrated through their passion for books, the environment, animals, conflict and the world around them. Simons explains they worry about the state of the world and are outraged by the actions of Vladimir Putin and former US president, Donald Trump. Her future wish is to seek more grants, fund scholarships for those who can’t meet the cost and “encourage more diverse learners”. Harriet Reed, 10, from Borough School explains Mind Plus is “very important because I get to learn more about myself and the differing opinions of others”. For Keegan Oates, 10, from Methven Primary, the programme “helps me to learn things that I didn’t know before and interact with others”. Phoenix Harris, 10, also from Methven Primary, finds the curriculum “helps me understand everything far more easily”.

Malcolm Hopwood Funding for Mind Plus is harder and harder to raise. Covid, the cost of living and the economic downturn are making it financially tough for some Mid Canterbury parents whose children attend four Borough School classes where Mind Plus is taught. The children, ranging in ages from seven to 13, are creatively and cognitively gifted and the teaching programme is part of the New Zealand Centre for Gifted Education (NZCGE). Once a week children from 15 schools, extending from Pleasant Point to Rakaia, attend Mind Plus which teaches a specialist curriculum for gifted children. NZCGE is a not-for-profit organisation which isn’t government financed and instead relies on parental funding and local and national grants. Parents pay $70 a day and teacher, Mel Simons, knows the sacrifices they make. There are some private scholarships available with financial support from contributing schools, but mostly the children’s education is met from the family budget. Simons has noticed children dropping out of class this year because of cost and is aware the programme is beyond the reach of some families.

Finding Mind Plus, once a week, is meeting their needs (from left) Harriet Reed, Keegan Oates and Phoenix Harris. “Our biggest challenge is to maintain the programme, find additional funding and reach those children who, until now, can’t afford to come,” Simons said. She points out the top five to

10 per cent of children “are born with high natural intellectual or creative ability”. “These children learn differently and Mind Plus caters for their needs,” Simons said. However she said children

aren’t good at everything but have gifts in some areas where they’re ahead of their chronological age. “We have a child who’s years ahead in maths, but their writing is below expectations. Some have learning difficulties as well as be-

Chamber here for Mid Canterbury businesses Daniel Alvey The Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce is alive and well in Mid Canterbury. Despite the lack of a permanent presence in Mid Canterbury, chief executive Leeann Watson understands the importance of face-toface communication with local businesses. “We fully recognise that there is nothing like having a face and a voice. “We don’t ever assume that doing business in Ashburton is the same as it is in Christchurch,” Watson said. The chamber’s business growth advisor for Mid Canterbury, Jason MacRae, looks after its 90 local members. “I’m part of larger team, not quite a one-man chamber,” MacRae said. Academy Awards MacRae is in Ashburton once a

week to keep on top of issues that businesses are facing. So what are the top issues in Mid Canterbury currently? MacRae said along with the national trend of staffing shortages, the engineering and agriculture sectors are facing supply constraints. “In Mid Canterbury we often help businesses with succession planning, also adapting their business to a changing landscape. “Often helping a business adapt and succeed,” MacRae said. While the chamber is here to support all businesses, being a member does have some advantages. The chamber has the ability to become an extra staff member, that can help with complex issues employers may struggle with. “A business can rely on us to be an extension of their business,” Watson said, adding that a business can pick up their phone and ask for help with any issue. The chamber also advocates for businesses to the government with issues they may face due to policy changes.

Former refugees share mayoral lunch

Thursday, 12 May 2022 | ISSUE 78

Late surge of Annual Plan submissions Council was delighted to receive a flurry of last-minute submissions during the final week of consultation on the draft Annual Plan, with a total of 131 people having their say before the deadline. Staff are now processing the feedback, however roading is already emerging as a hot topic. Some submitters have indicated they want to speak to their views in-person when Council meets on 24 and 25 May to consider the submissions. These hearings and the Council deliberation process will be livestreamed.

Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown invited some special newcomers to lunch last week to hear how they are finding their move to Ashburton. Thirty-five men, women and children who fled Afghanistan and resettled in Ashburton over the past year were invited to share food with Mayor Brown, deputy mayor Liz McMillan and Councillors Leen Braam and Diane Rawlinson. It was an occasion to celebrate their new beginnings. Refugee Settlement support team leader Kathy Harrington-Watt said the latest arrivals had only been in Ashburton a few days, and another 22 were due in the coming months.

“They all originate from Afghanistan but have had to leave for fear of persecution or other frightening reasons. They are loving living in Ashburton and say the community has been very welcoming.” She said many refugees spent years after fleeing Afghanistan in countries like Malaysia or Iran, waiting to be resettled. “Now they are here, they are keen to improve their English, for their children to go to school and to learn new skills that will secure them jobs in our local community. “The biggest reason why they are flourishing in Ashburton though is because the community is so supportive, generous and accepting.” The resettlement service finds homes

for the newcomers and a recent plea for bicycles resulted in about 200 being gifted. Mayor Brown said the shared lunch was an important part of helping the former refugees adapt to their new lives. “It is good for them to understand that in New Zealand, the local mayor and local government politicians are people they can approach and trust. Their experience of authorities in other countries may not have been so positive. “They should have no reason to be fearful living in our district and I know many members of our generous community have gone out of their way to show kindness and hospitality. We look forward to them taking the next step and joining community groups and the local workforce.”

Council is proposing an average 9.4 per cent rate increase, driven by a range of challenges including high inflation. People were also asked for their views on using $1.7 million from forestry reserves to do more roading work and whether the Council should further review its day-today services. Strategy and Compliance Group Manager Jane Donaldson thanked submitters for taking time to read the consultation document and provide feedback. “The number of submissions doubled in the last week and they contained a range of views about the work we have planned for the next financial year. The next step is for Councillors to consider that feedback and make decisions on the final form of the plan, which will be adopted at the end of June.” You can read what people had to say about the draft Annual Plan at itsourplace.nz.

Rodger Letham, Councillor

Do it right and keep it local We are almost starting the run-up to the next Local Body Elections, which are due to be held in October. Where has the last three years gone? It has been a busy three years with some big projects completed or still under way, plus you can throw in Covid-19, the Three Waters Programme, Local Government Reform and Resource Management Act review. This is on top of our completion of the CBD upgrade, with the new Library and Civic Building under construction and the further development of Baring Square East planned, plus a new bridge on the horizon. In the midst of all this Council still has to run and maintain the everyday activities of the district. Our staff 1

Thursday, 12 May 2022 | ISSUE 78

are under extreme pressure but are holding the line well. But first things first. Three Waters is going to be the biggest challenge we have seen for decades and it has not started well. No one denies that a massive investment in water infrastructure is needed throughout the country. Space does not permit me to give a full run-down of events, or my opinions, but suffice to say Councillors, whoever they are, will need to be wary, watchful and focused in ensuring we get the best deal for our ratepayers. The Government has not given us confidence in their performance so far. The programme has been poorly researched, badly presented and has cost millions of dollars in childish propaganda to try and sway the public to their point of view.

On top of all that, the Minister blatantly mandated the new entities before the end of the agreed time for study and questioning by councils. In my previous life, if a person broke a contract in that manner they would have been promptly marched into court. I am not even going to start on “co-governance” but it appears that ideology is getting in the way of practical commonsense. However, it has, to a greater or lesser degree, always been thus. We are a resilient community which has over the years withstood floods, snow, gales, drought and storms. At times of disaster, we pull together and get through and we will do so again. All these things will pass and we will face different challenges. We have some of the best soils in the world, the most successful farmers and business people that are the envy of

many. We have good educational, cultural and sporting facilities. The enquiry for building sites both residential and commercial is huge, which indicates a positive future. In light of all that is happening around the world, I am privileged to live, work and play in this district. A place where mothers can take their children to the playground in peace and safety, where our children can walk safely to school. Where we can gather and socialise in comfort and safety as and when we wish (except during covid lockdowns). Long may it last.

Tight contest for People's Choice award Just one vote separated the top two in the ANZ Business of the Year Awards People's Choice in Retail Category and the winner will be announced at the awards' gala evening on Friday 27 May. Members of the public decided the winner and just over 500 votes were cast in the voting period last year. The finalists in the category (in no particular order) are Big Al's, The Stork Network, Stoked Cycles, Hyundai Mid Canterbury and Garage Gym. Ashburton District Council is partnering with ANZ and Ri Ra Events to host the inaugural awards, which aim to recognise and promote local business excellence. Council Community Services Group Manager Steve Fabish said was great that people had voted for their favourite business or outlet. “There were 11 businesses in the category and they were a real variety, all with good voting support. We’re looking forward to honouring the finalists and winners of all the different categories at the awards evening.” The awards evening in Methven was to have been in February but was delayed by Covid-19. Tickets to the event, and information about all the finalists, are available at businessoftheyear.nz.

Samples are collected regularly from water supply networks and water treatment plants including the Ashburton, Methven and Rakaia townships as well as nine other smaller community supplies. The frequency of testing ranges from daily on the Ashburton supply, twice per week at Methven and Rakaia, and weekly on the smaller supplies – all as required by standards set by the drinking water regulator Taumata Arowai. The water is sampled for E.coli and Total Coliforms and field readings are collected for chlorine, pH and turbidity. Additionally, regular chemical samples are also collected, including monthly nitratenitrogen samples from all supplies. The E.coli and Total Coliform samples are tested in the council’s in-house laboratory; this test involves samples being placed in an incubator for 24 hours, meaning results are available the following day. Any positive result is investigated to see what caused the problem, and fixed.

PUBLIC NOTICES readings for chlorine, pH and turbidity are also taken. These are collected using portable field instruments and confirm the treatment process and water networks are performing as expected. While the focus on water quality has historically been testing after it leaves the bore or plant, new online technology to be installed in the coming year will automatically test raw bore water and treated water, and send the results electronically to Council. Any issues will be picked up in real time, not the next day. Council operates 12 water supply schemes, servicing about 70 per cent of the population. The Ashburton scheme is the biggest, with more than 200km of pipe supplying about 19,000 people. Methven’s supply is the next largest, with 1700.

METHVEN WATER WORK

Methven residents are being asked to conserve water on Friday 13 May during planned work on the Methven drinking water supply. Contractors will be doing underground pipe work at the water treatment plant so no water will be flowing into the plant, however there will be enough water in the reservoir to service the town if people use it conservatively. The work will begin at 8am and should be complete by mid-afternoon. Infrastructure Services Group Manager Neil McCann said it made sense to do some underground work for a new treatment plant while two new water reservoirs were under construction at the site. People are asked to conserve their water use where possible to avoid draining the reservoir. "People can still have showers and flush toilets, but minimise activity that would use large amounts of water during Friday morning.” The work is being done by ACL and Reliant Solutions.

OUR VIEW

It’s not the destination, it’s the journey O

ften the biggest challenge with a journey is the getting to your destination. Not so much though, if the journey is made a little easier. A few years ago, the term ‘four-lane highway’ was almost a buzz word around these parts. Politicians visited and spoke of the need for a widening of the road between Ashburton and Rolleston – often themselves having just travelled that route and experienced its complications and frustrations. We largely agreed with them, even if there was a strong feeling that other roading issues within the district were perhaps of a higher priority, but as Mid Cantabrians, we understood the sentiment behind it all. In the past two years or so, the subject has become a bit

Matt Markham of a moot point. Shoved to one side for various reasons, none more so than the fact that National, who were behind the drive to make it happen, didn’t get elected. But on Friday last week, it returned to common parlance with the arrival to the region of current National leader Chris Luxon. He noted that the plan was still very much on the table and with even more time having lapsed since it was first put out in the public sphere for discussion and opinion, its merits seem to have increased. That’s, in large, thanks to the

opening of the new southern motorway, north of Rolleston and the realisation that has come with its arrival of just how user-friendly, time-saving and easy it makes travel.

drive on such a piece of roading and how much less stressful it would make the normal drive up to the city. The proof is now, as they say, in the pudding. What’s been

plan was still very much on the table “ The and with even more time having lapsed its merits seem to have increased.

Before its introduction to the roading network, it was often hard to picture how it might be if upon going past the Ashburton Racecourse heading north you were greeted with wide, spacious double lanes on either side of the road. It was hard to imagine what it might be like to

constructed north of Rolleston has cut nearly 20 minutes of travel out of a normal trip into the Christchurch city centre – and the best part of it all? There’s no stop-start action, it’s a nice fluent drive for what used to be an arduous task. So, the question then begs,

why wouldn’t we want that all the way from Ashburton? And to go further, why couldn’t we have it the length of the State Highway from one end of the South Island to the other? We’ve seen major roading upgrades such as the much-discussed Transmission Gully in the North Island open recently and read and seen the benefits it’s made to travel, surely a slice of the apple could be similarly applied to the mainland as well. Right now, it feels like you’re losing an arm and a leg every time you head to the petrol pump, and it would be nice to see a chunk of the take from those fill-ups being pumped back into a road that made access to one of our major cities that much easier for a whole heap of people on a day-to-day basis.

A case of love at first sight BY PAT DEAVOLL Tahora Farm’s highly anticipated holstein dairy sale averaged $9486 with a top price of $30,000 at the Tai Tapu Hotel on April 29. A crowd of more than 400 squeezed into the Canterbury hotel to watch the action under Australian auctioneer Brian Leslie. The top price was paid for the catalogue’s cover girl – Tahora Octane Love at Lot 4. She was bought by Karen Fitzgerald, of Feilding. Fitzgerald’s 15-yearold daughter, Zara Williams, was at the sale in her mother’s stead and said she had travelled to the sale with Fitzgerald’s partner, Selwyn Donald, hoping Love would be joining their herd.

we saw her “ When at the Christchurch Show, we just fell in love with her, mum was the main reason we bought her, and she was pretty determined to get her.

Love hit the sale ring with runs on the board. The four-year-old had been Intermediate Champion and All Breeds Champion at the 2021 Christchurch Show, along with All Breeds Champion at the Ellesmere Show in 2021. “When we saw her at the Christchurch Show, we just fell in love with her,” Williams said. “Mum was the main reason we bought her, and she was pretty determined to get her.” She said they were excited to be planning to take her home,

The top price was paid for the catalogue’s cover girl – Tahora Octane Love at Lot 4. and they hoped to return her to the show ring. “I’m happy and excited, honestly. We’ve been watching her for ages, and she’s gorgeous. Mum was crying on the phone because she was excited, and then Selwyn came over to me, and he had tears in his eyes too.” The second top price was paid by the Fullerton family, of Ham-

ilton for lot 12, Tahora Mogul Paris. She sold for $28,000. The third top price also went to the North Island to the wellknown jersey herd of Ferdon Genetics, at Otorohanga. They had to wait for the very last animal to secure their piece of Tahora. They paid $25,000 for lot 70, Tahora Tatoo Brittany.

The sale kept up a solid pace throughout, with 19-head sold online through selling platform Bidr. Volume buyers included Newlands Whytock (Te Awamutu, seven head), Eades (Gore, five head) and Jo Dorn (Stratford, three head). There was one speckle park February-born heifer calf in-

cluded at Lot 69. She sold for $13,000 to Paisley Price Farm Ltd, at Brookside.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): There are those who would withhold their approval as a way of inclining you toward their wishes – a lot of rigamarole for you. Ask for the honesty and directness you’d prefer, and you just might get it. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Go easy. What bit of complexity can you let go of? Simplicity of thought and action will make room for joy. Patience and accordance with the way things are will bring peace to a chaotic world. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): It is only natural to want to possess these beautiful, temporary states that, ultimately, cannot be owned. It is wise not to throw money at problems that cannot be solved with money. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): The spirit of competition is alive. You wish to be as bright, quick and sharp as you possibly can be, therefore you wish only the best for your opponent. People at their best raise the level for everyone. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Wandering is what people do. Eyes, minds and bodies flow sometimes purposefully, other times aimlessly, with a restlessness that is part of being human. Allow for it. Guide yourself back with kindness. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You are like clay, and everything you let into your life will imprint on you. You’re excited about what’s going to happen when you let in certain influences. You’ve a strong sense of how you want to be formed. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Relationships flow through life, some a constant throughout and others salient for a season. Either way, it is your sincere desire that everyone leaves better than before. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You remember the ones you owe a debt to and you’re working to pay up. As for those who owe you, you’ll put it out of mind. When their payment does come, it will be a delightful surprise. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Love is a verb to you – a process instead of a thing that exists in space. Finding love will be like discovering yourself in a series of movements and realising, “Hey, I am dancing.” CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): The best way to complain is by making something that’s way better. Solutions are coming together in your mind. You’re coming into a streak of brilliance. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Compromise is essential to life and relationships, and you’re often better for the effort. But if you find yourself having to compromise every little step of the way, it’s the sign of a bad fit. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): It is harder for a person who is strongly identifying with every little detail of their image to give themselves over to the unpredictability of the moment. It takes more confidence to lose control than to gain it.

Lienert-Brown notches a ton

T

he Highlanders side has been named to face the Western Force at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Friday night. It will be Daniel LienertBrown’s 100th Super Rugby game and his 98th game for the Highlanders. Lienert-Brown began his Super Rugby career in 2014 at the Crusaders, playing two games, before linking with the Highlanders in 2015 and has been a regular in the side ever since. After three weeks on tour, the Highlanders return to their home ground of Forsyth Barr Stadium to play the Western Force at home for the first time since 2016. This round 13 game with be played on Friday May 13 at 7.05pm, and instead of a Black

Friday it will be Maroon Friday with the home team playing in their maroon alternative strip due to a colour clash with the Force alternate strip. Following last week’s win against the Reds at Suncorp, the Highlanders are now inside the DHL Super Rugby Pacific top 8 and eager to maintain a playoff spot heading into the final three rounds. Head Coach Tony Brown is aware of the importance of the last few rounds. “At least our destiny is in our own hands now and if we can keep winning – we make the playoffs, which of course is easier said than done. We must continue to grow as a team and improve each week if we are to be contenders in this compe-

Daniel Lienert-Brown

tition. There are a number of teams playing good rugby at the moment and we know we haven’t put a complete performance out on the park yet.” The forwards have a familiar look tom them this week with just the return of Andrew Makalio for the injured Liam Coltman as the only change.

Brown continues with the back row of Lentjes, Mikaele-Tu’u and Harmon, who have all played seven and ensures good mobility across the loose forwards. It is a different story in the backline with Brown shuffling the deck. After good early season form Josh Timu has returned from

injury to make the starting team at the more familiar position of centre pushing the hard running Fetuli Paea out to the wing. The other significant change has Sam Gilbert moving into first-five, where he played his schoolboy rugby and Mitch Hunt coming off the bench. Brown is confident Gilbert has what it takes to deliver at firstfive on Friday night. “Sam has a good all round skill set, kicks well out of hand and off the tee, is a strong defender, communicates well and is an elusive runner. Although he hasn’t played 10 at this level, we believe he has the aptitude to lead us around the field. Mitch plays well off the bench, so we believe it will be a good combination.”

Ashburton Dahlia Circle

The recent mini flower show was held in April with a great turnout of members, and we welcomed 2 new members to the circle. This month’s show saw an impressive number of dahlia blooms with the wonderful weather that we’ve been having it also included Fuchsia, Chrysanthemum, Hydrangea, Pansies, autumn foliage, fruit and vegetables to name a few, an impressive 108 entries across 21 classes. Overall results, 1st place - Brian Glassey - stunning white Chrysanthemum “Dorridge Lady”, 2nd place - Graham Gunn Dahlia “Coralie”, 3rd place - Joyce Read - Rose “Gold Medal”. The meeting was held and discussion was around the National Dahlia Show that the circle is organising for 2023 this will be hosted in Ashburton, a spectacular show so something to look forward too next year. Current topic - What do we do with our Dahlias now? An excellent write up is on our FB page if anyone would like to read that information. Our next meeting is our AGM and we are looking forward to a lovely dinner and presentation of trophy’s to celebrate the past season of dahlia growing. Get excited and plan your spaces for planting more dahlias in your garden, our annual tuber sale will be coming up again, Labour weekend at the Ashburton Farmers Market.

The Watson Cup round of 16 really separated the men from the boys and this sets up some intriguing quarter-final match-ups. Bruce and Perry flexed their muscles, showing why they are number one seeds. They handed down a spanking to Tom and Ben, but will find a much tougher game ahead against David Fisher and George Brown who went extra holes to beat Dad and Lad McMillan. Terry Molloy and Bruce Ferriman cruised through, but will have a very tough game against Chris Lovelock and Greg Fleming who smashed Daz and the Hopster. Robbie and Royce or Rolls Royce if you will! Look a very strong pairing and they will have a good game against dark horses Mitchell Lye and Robert Pawsey. The last quarter-final is Jeff Williamson and John Ramsay, who double teamed

Ashburton Writers’ Group

Julie Fechney welcomed members to the April meeting held recently. Stacey Broadbent gave a quotation – “Reading is like breathing in, writing is like breathing out.” The assignment was Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire. Members wrote of defamation case, diamond ring, argument, informers, NYPD, literary assignment, best-seller and poem about a cow. The instant exercise was “As a child, what was your dream job and how successful did you imagine you’d be”. Members spoke of school teaching, journalist, travel agent, working with animals, dancer as Madonna’s back-up, veterinary surgeon, work in a shop and sell lollies, air hostess and hairdresser. The May assignment is “Diary entering Day 52 on a Deserted Island”. Visitors are welcome, please phone Rae at 308-8927.

Wakanui Women’s Institute Bright colours, and stunning displays were on offer at the April meeting of the Ashburton Dahlia Circle. well to put the two Pats to bed, against Steve Mc and Stephen Lee. Should be another very close game. We also have eight loser pairs playing in the Newton plate quarters. All the results and semi-final match-ups next week. Unlucky golfer of the week goes to Ryan Stoddart, who managed to get himself 2 twos, but because of some oversight when signing in for the day he did not put a dollar in the kitty, so missed out on the pool of $300. Oh well, try again next time. Pennants on this Sunday across the district. The scratch teams in Holmes/ Hayes have a double header at Tinwald. The A team play North Otago and Point with the B team playing Gleniti and North Otago. Davo and the Redpath boys head down to Waimate to face Timaru. Shane and the Alex chaps just go over the bridge and take on Geraldine. Then at Pleasant point, Dylan and the pups take on the home team in a very tough game. Paddy tried to wield the axe in the Old

dogs team, but with Covid and prior engagements a couple of players survived on very thin ice. They do however welcome back their lucky talisman the Flying Dutchman for his first game of the season facing the mighty Mayfield mob. Results and stories next week. Good golfing.

Ashburton MSA Petanque Club

Over the weekend several of our players competed in the Otago Triples in Mosgiel with Jan Guilford, Marion Harrison and their Caversham partner runners up in the Championship Trophy. These three were chuffed being the only all women’s team to finish in the top 6. Richard Browne, Neville and Karen Bensdorp won the Consolation. Congratulations to you all. Our members continue to learn from Adeyls and his wife Lani, with coaching last Thursday and on Saturday. This has to fit in with shift work so will not be a weekly event, but we all really appreciate them both giving their time.

Saturday afternoon play is proving popular with the members, especially with the lovely weather we have been experiencing. Two newbies joined us last week. The next event is South Canterbury Doubles in Timaru this Saturday to which several of our players are going. On the last Sunday this month we hold the Club Drawn Doubles, which will prove to be another popular event where we can put the new skills we are learning into practice. We held our AGM last Thursday, with the same main Committee being re-elected. President Karen Bensdorp reflected on the busy and successful year we have had and is pleased with the growth in the club. We have several promotional items on the go which you will soon see. The Match Committee saw one change, thank you Bernice for your time given, and welcome to Adair. Remember you are most welcome to join us any Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday at 1pm, at 115 Racecourse Road. Equipment and tuition are available.

Vice President Dianne Carter welcomed members to the meeting and thanked Jenette Storrier for her hospitality. Aspirations were recited. Motto: “Believe you can, and you are halfway there.” Minutes were read of the previous meeting. Personal messages from members who were visiting family in Australia were received. Reports: Officers school on 1st April was attended by three of our members. Mavis announced the Bay and Tray Competitions for the Ashburton A & P show, the theme for both classes “ In the Garden” Remits for the 101st Annual General Meeting/Conference were discussed, Wakanui’s delegate will be Vice President Dianne. The Cup Day Schedule was distributed to members. This year Project for National - “Looking for Opportunities in Your Community”a number of suggestions were made by members. Janet has agreed to record information for the Wakanui Institute’s Scrapbook. Meeting closed at 12noon, and members shared lunch and had an enjoyable social time together.

Galleons Ambassador looks well worth the wait The connections of Galleons Ambassador were rewarded for their patience with their mare when she broke through for her maiden win in the Anne Thompson Memorial Graduation Series Trot at Rangiora on Sunday. The daughter of Love You was first-up for trainer-driver John Morrison whose tactical navigation proved the making of Sunday’s result. After settling towards the rear of the field, Morrison sent his charge three wide down the back straight to assume the lead. Driver Ricky May took a similar approach with Majestic Whisper, however, Galleons Ambassador was able to see off his challenge but had to call on all her talent in the home straight to see off a fast-finishing Lil Miss Muscles to win by a head. “The other one (Lil Miss Muscles) was coming quick. “It got close but luckily the line came up,” Morrison said. “She went well but she is probably not suited to the shorter distance trips, she

will be better once she gets up in distance.” It was Galleons Ambassador’s first win from eight starts and Morrison said he is thankful to her owners for keeping the faith. “It was good to get a win with her,” he said. “She has taken a bit of time and it is lucky that I have got loyal owners that have been happy enough to wait. “She has come along nicely.” Galleons Ambassador hadn’t raced since last spring and Morrison said he gave her a decent break before giving her a slow build-up culminating in Sunday’s resumption. “She was good last time in but when spring hit she had a lot of problems with tying up and a few niggly issues, so I turned her out for a month over Christmas and have just worked her up quietly,” Morrison said. “She is a lot better now.” A return to Rangiora in a fortnight is now on the cards for the mare. “She will go to the Anne Thomspon Final and we will reassess after that,” Morrison said.

Natalie Corbett – Netball

A national title, her fourth on the greens, capped a remarkable year for local lawn bowls dynamo, Sandra Keith. The Allenton Bowling Club member teamed up with 80-year-old, Bev Morel to claim the title in Christchurch. As well as her national success, Keith has been a Canterbury women’s representative, a Champion of Champion Pairs victor and also holds the Mid Canterbury Champion of Champion Triples and Fours Titles in her home region. Sandra was named Bowls Canterbury’s most consistent female player of the year.

Through Natalie’s work she co-ordinates the weekly walking netball sessions. As a result of this she became a driving force in the development of the Mid Canterbury No Limits Netball programme, where each week she coaches a group of unique individuals, many of whom had never touched a netball before in their lives. Through Tu Manawa Active Aotearoa Fund Natalie provides the opportunity for members of the community who live with a disability. Many of the participants are accompanied with a carer who join in on the ball handling skills and drills finishing with a game of walking netball.

Kelera Nawai – Netball

Sandy is a member of the New Zealand Open team, New Zealand Women’s Team, South Island Open Team South Island Women’s Team, and The Mid Canterbury Open Team. Sandy has achieved an average score more than 98/100, which is high level shooting. At the Nationals Sandy shot 391.14 for the women’s match and 393.10 for the Open, which gained her selection for the corresponding New Zealand teams for the international matches against Great Britain. Sandy’s performance across the National weekend was strong and consistent.

At the Special Olympics held in Nelson last year the Mid Canterbury Bocce team dominated proceedings. Joanne and Emma claimed the gold medal in the event, fighting off the challenge of friends and fellow Mid Cantabrians, Peter and Stuart. Considering the event is held every four years, and Mid Canterbury players don’t play on a full sized court often, it’s a remarkable achievement.

Special Olympics Mid Canterbury Swim Team Team members were Ella Gardener, Dominica Cotter, Emma Woods, Trevor Nish, Peter Testa. Ella winning one gold medal and two silver, Dominica winning one gold and a bronze medal, Emma Woods winning one gold and two fourth placings, Trevor winning one gold and a silver with Peter winning one gold, a silver and fourth placing. Neville Bensdorp – Petanque

At the New Zealand Petanque Nationals, Neville claimed his biggest scalp of all by winning the New Zealand Petanque Singles title, in what is just his seventh year in the sport. His first national title capped off a strong few months on the terrain for Bensdorp, who was also a part of the winning team in the South Island Open Triples team in February. With determination and dedication, there’s plenty more in store for Neville.

Methven netballer Kelera Nawai resurrected a fading ANZ premiership dream after making a giant leap from club netball to being a regular starter for Te Wanga o Raukawa Pulse. Patrolling the defensive circle, she immediately had impact on the court. Throughout the 2021 season she featured prominently on the statistical side in terms of intercepts, rebounds, and deflections despite coming into the season after a year out of elite netball. Playing for the Pulse was a huge commitment for the Methven-based player. This year she is in the 2022 Trident Homes Tactix squad.

At the New Zealand Rowing Nationals Ged was placed second in the Men`s Double and achieved another silver medal in in the Men’s Club Quad. Ged was placed sixth in the A Final in the Men’s single. Olympian Emma Dyke announces her retirement from rowing Matt Markham A new focus and new opportunities await Olympic rower Emma Dyke, who announced her retirement from rowing this week. Dyke, who grew up on her parents’ farm in Mayfield before attending school in Timaru, has stepped away from the sport officially, turning her focus to new opportunities in London, where she is now based. It comes less than 12 months after the talented athlete claimed a silver medal in Tokyo as part of the women’s eight. “I have lived and breathed rowing for the past nine years, however I know it’s the right time for me to start something new,” she said. “I am thankful to everyone that have made the last years such great ones.” Speaking to the Guardian last year after returning from Tokyo and spending some time with her family on the farm, Dyke confirmed it was her intention to take some time away from the sport that had consumed her life and there were perhaps some subtle undertones of what has unfolded this week in the way she

Emma Dyke has announced her retirement from rowing. spoke about what lay ahead. “I’m taking this coming season/year off and heading to the UK,” she said. “The time off will give me a good chance to find out where my head and heart are in terms of rowing. I’m keen to experience something different as the world’s a big place.” After beginning her rowing career at Craighead Diocesan and

Timaru Rowing Club in 2010, Dyke first represented New Zealand at the 2013 World Rowing Junior Championships in the women’s coxless four, where the crew placed 5th. After rowing for the Southern Rowing Performance Centre for one season, she was selected in the Under 23 women’s four, and went on to win a silver medal at the World Rowing U23 Champi-

PHOTO ART OF ROWING

onships held in Varese, Italy. Just one year later Emma found herself part of the elite women’s eight. The crew won a silver medal at the 2015 World Rowing Championships and in the process made history as the first-ever women’s eight from New Zealand to qualify for the Olympic Games. A narrow fourth place in Rio didn’t slow Emma down, and she

continued in the boat class for the 2017 season. The crew picked up a host of World Rowing Cup medals along with a Henley Royal Regatta win and capped off a solid season with a nail-biting bronze from the World Rowing Championships in Sarasota, Florida. In 2018 Emma was again selected in the women’s eight that placed seventh at the World Rowing Championships. This result made 2019 an important year for the Kiwi women’s eight, who came back to the international circuit with a point to prove. Another reshuffle of seats put Emma into the number two seat of the most successful women’s eight New Zealand has ever produced, with wins at World Rowing Cup III, Henley and, for the very first time, at the World Rowing Championships. Following on from this successful 2019 campaign, Emma was named in the women’s eight, alongside Ella Greenslade, Lucy Spoors, Kelsey Bevan, Grace Prendergast, Kerri Gowler, Beth Ross, Jackie Gowler, and Caleb Shepherd (cox) to compete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The crew continued their success by bringing home a silver Olympic medal and cementing themselves as some of the most dominant sweep rowers in the world.

No time for complacency Matt Markham There’s no place for complacency, so don’t expect the foot to come off the Hampstead throttle this week in Mid Canterbury’s Premier Netball competition. Two games down in the season and the defending champions have two wins next to their name, bettered only by the significantly larger goal differential held by Celtic on the overall standings.

On the court Round 3 action in Mid Canterbury Premier Netball Premier 1: 6.15pm, Hampstead v Ashburton College A. 7.15pm: Southern v Methven A, 8.15pm: United A v Celtic A. Premier 2: 6.15pm, Celtic B v Hampstead B, 7.15pm: Ashburton College B v Methven B, 8.15pm: Allenton v Mt Somers. Premier 3: 6.15pm: United B v Hampstead U18, 7.15pm: Methven Shearmac v Ashburton College 10A, 7.15pm: Methven Humm v Rakaia.

They were slick last week, against a very good United side who pushed them for the entirety of the match, and will head into tonight’s clash with the young Ashburton College side brimming with confidence. Head coach Cindy Meadows may look to blood in some of her new recruits for the season and give them some time on the court after they’ve impressed her greatly in the past few weeks. “They are really flourishing,” she said of Ashlein Lyttle and Molly Jones. “Being in an environment where they have so much experience to learn from, and the knowledge to gain from just being out on the court with senior players is fantastic, and I’ve been so happy with the way they’ve been performing when they’ve come on the court.” College come into tonight’s match on the back of an opening round loss and then a draw against Southern last week. They showed good improvement there, and while perhaps a step below the top three sides in the competition they’re going to cause some problems at some stage during the season. For Meadows, it’s not so much about the opposition that they’re facing each week, but more ensuring that they’re achieving the game plan that they’ve set out to play and ticking off the little things that need to be sharpened up.

Ashburton College will be out to try and upset the Premier 1 netball competition tonight when they take on Hampstead. PHOTO MATT MARKHAM 280422-MM-012 “You’re never going to get the perfect game, because you sort one thing out and something else pops up and you need to get on top of that, but if we’re improving from week-to-week and showing that progression out on the court, then I’m going to be a proud coach. “The competition this year is going to be tight I think, we’ve got some really good sides out there on the court and it’s going to be

interesting to see how it all unfolds.” Hampstead and College play the opening match of the night, but there will be plenty of interest later on as well with Southern looking to keep Methven winless three weeks into the competition, and then a match that promises to be a belter between United and Celtic in the final round of the evening. Methven were underwhelm-

ing in last week’s clash against Celtic, but are capable of much better and will see tonight as a real opportunity to kickstart their season into gear and make something happen. Competition leaders, Celtic, are riding the crest of a wave to start their season with two dominant performances, but will be wary of a very good United side tonight who will be out to upset them.
