Goldberg Gisborne-bound Daniel Alvey After 26 years in Ashburton, it’s time to say goodbye to a town icon. He’s Anthony “Goldberg” Bartlett, who is heading to Gisborne to be closer to his family. “I don’t want to leave Ashburton,” an emotional Goldberg said yesterday, having parked his mobility scooter up outside and taken off his Viking hat to break the news to the Guardian. “Everyone is welcome to come and say goodbye to me.’’ And hundreds are likely to wish him all the best to end a unique relationship with an always happy figure, who roamed around town on his scooter, cheering up the local spirits as he went.

Many will miss his infectious smile and his choice of headwear, because Goldberg always donned a hat. The list of hats included cowboy hats, a Santa option, even a road cone during the CBD upgrades, but his favourite, of course, was his Viking hat, for which he has become synonymous.

His departure rocked Ashburton Guardian Facebook followers yesterday, with news and the reaction of his imminent departure being one of the most popular ever posted on our page. “What a sad day for Ashburton but exciting times for Goldberg,’’ Clare Bamfield said. “Wish you all the best and I hope they treasure you in Gis-

borne as much as we treasured you. Safe travels Goldberg.” Lee Jeanette Ward echoed the thoughts of many, saying he would be badly missed. “. . . the smile you put on everyone’s faces every day was very magical. You were our icon. Good luck.’’ Goldberg, who moved to Ashburton in 1996, would common-

ly park up on the side of State Highway One in Ashburton, waving to passing motorists and greeting visitors. He held numerous jobs and his last role before retiring was collecting rubbish bins around the town centre for businesses, including the Guardian. He loves his rugby, being a massive Mid Canterbury fan and for

some time he even manned the scoreboard at the showgrounds. Robilliards Showcase Jeweller owner, Mark Douglas, captured the thoughts of many when talking about Goldberg. “He is an Ashburton institution,’’ Douglas said. “I see him almost every day.” But, sadly Ashburton, not for much longer.

Truckie gives pole a new slant Jonathan Leask One of the new traffic lights at the intersection of East Street and Havelock Street is on a lean after being hit by a truck. The traffic light pole was hit on the night of Friday May 7, leaving it on a lean and in need of repair, and the Ashburton District Council hunting the vehicle. Infrastructure services group manager Neil McCann said by the time the council was made aware of the damage it was too

late to review CCTV footage, which is only available for 72 hours. However, an eyewitness has suggested it was a milk tanker, and the council was in the process of confirming that with the company. “If we have evidence to confirm who is responsible we will recover the costs from the perpetrator,” McCann said. The traffic signals are still functional, but the leaning pole will be looked at by the maintenance contractor, he said, with the timeframe and cost of the repair still to be determined. In February the council updated its bylaw restricting heavy vehicles from the CBD, as part of its protection of its $15 mil-

lion CBD revitalisation project, to include East Street from Havelock Street down to Moore Street. The East Street and Havelock Street intersection is where the heavy vehicle ban starts, but as the reported tanker has hit the pole while turning left to head north on East Street it has not breached the bylaw.

Bringing district together Lili Haydon Connecting Mid Canterbury Charitable Trust is hosting a community event for Mid Canterbury. The trust is hoping to bring the community together and support them by hosting free local events in each district to promote all the initiatives they offer such as the TimeBank and Keeping Learning Mid Canterbury. They have already hosted similar events in Westerfield and Hinds. “We have the Methven event

on Wednesday this week, Dorie on Thursday then Mt Somers, Hakatere Marae and Wakanui coming up later,” Connecting Mid Canterbury co-ordinator Kate White said. This is all thanks to funding from Te Putahitanga o Te Waipounamu, who wanted to help support the welfare of rural people, according to White. White only received the funding in April, and it has to be spent by June. So White decided to use the money to host community events and invited other rural organisations to be at the events to promote what services they offer, such as the Hakatere Multicultural Council, Wellbeing Opuke, and Rural Support Trust. “(We can) help employers

and immigrants to the area,” White said. And there is no excuses not to head along, they have dinner and childcare sorted. “Kids get to keep busy doing crafts with a volunteer,” White said. They provide soup and buns, and the district’s Lions club puts on a free sausage sizzle. And White has organised to have the local fire brigades attend as well. White does want people to register though, so she knows how many to cater for. There is even spot prizes at each event. At the Dorie event the spot prize is a jet boat tour for four, donated by Discovery Jet. “Its all about connecting,” White said.

Sallies store not a dump Lili Haydon Household items are being dumped while other items are being stolen outside the Salvation Army Family Store. The store, on the corner of Cass and Wills Street, has had to erect a fence to stop people from dumping household rubbish outside of the second-hand store’s open hours. Semi Ratu who is running Salvation Army Corps services in Ashburton said it’s been worse since the long weekends because they have been closed more than the shop’s usual opening hours. With interest rates, petrol and food prices hitting an all-time high, some people are having to take drastic measures to keep up with the rising prices to survive. “Lately there has been an increase in household rubbish,” Ratu said. Which means the Salvation Army have had to fork out money to pay for the dumping of the household waste.

Trees removal

Ashburton District Council contractors will be removing 18 trees on South Belt in Methven this week. Contractors plan to start the work on Wednesday and it is expected to take several days. Stumps will be ground out and berms will be repaired with soil and grass seed. New trees will be planted on the street.

Correction On Saturday May 14 we mistakenly said that the Presbyterian Financial Support Group was funded in part by Age Concern, when they are actually funded by Advance Ashburton, we apologise to those affected.

Appointment

Salvation Army staff members (from left) Jill Newton and Catherine Harris, hope the fence around their family store will stop the ongoing pilfering and dumping. And this has been a recurring problem for the store. So they have had to make the decision for donations to be dropped off during opening hours only. “People are still welcome to donate, but only during opening hours,” Ratu said.

Last November they made the decision to put up a fence, but since building supplies have been scarce due to supply problems resulting from Covid, it has taken over six months for it to be built. Ratu credits the Devon Tavern across the road for notifying him

when they see people dumping and/or stealing items from their doorstep. The items the Salvation Army sell can make a huge difference in aiding Mid Canterbury families. Profits from items sold through the store also supports the charity’s community work.

Six months on and still no parking sensors imal disruption. To install the around 215 sensors, a hole the same size as the sensor is drilled in the road surface into which the sensor is placed, requiring no remediation of the road surface. Aside from the sensors, and the snag list of minor repairs and outstanding items is being worked through, it has been delivered on time and on budget. The total expenditure on the project to date is $17,494,993 and with around $97,000 outstanding for the parking sensors it will still come under the approved budget for the project of $17,639,620.

Jonathan Leask The disruption of the $15 million CBD revitalisation project is in the rear-view mirror, but the project is not fully complete. The overall project was completed in November, except for the installation of the parking sensors. Six months later they are still yet to even arrive in the country. “International supply chain issues have meant they are yet to be delivered,” Ashburton District Council infrastructure services group manager Neil McCann, said. “We checked with our supplier two weeks ago, and they indicated that they are approximately three months away from arriving in New Zealand.”

Sydney-bound in search of some health answers Malcolm Hopwood Ashburton youngster, Chloe Peck, is waiting on a flight to Australia where a rehabilitation centre can reduce the chronic pain she’s in and give her more mobility. Chloe, a Year 7 student at Borough School, has suffered excruciating pain since she fell in the playground while playing tag at school in February last year. Despite being treated by her GP and Ashburton Hospital, the pain “that stabs and throbs all over my body” has never lessened and, after visits to Starship and the Wilson Rehabilitation Centre in Auckland, she’s losing more feeling in her body.

In desperation, her mother, Alanna Peck, reached out to the Advance Rehabilitation Centre in Sydney where therapists specialise in Chloe’s condition. They’ve agreed to accept Chloe as a patient and she leaves with her mother next month when they have a livein position available. The complete cost of her treatment and travel is $30,000, and a close family friend, Stacey McEvedy, has set up a Givealittle page to help meet their costs. So far she’s received promises of $13,000. Chloe, now in a wheelchair, is hoping the treatment will lessen the pain and allow her to walk, while her mother wants Chloe to get her childhood back again. The full story on Chloe, a courageous young girl and chronic pain syndrome sufferer, will feature in Saturday’s Ashburton Guardian.

Clark steps down as Mid Canty Feds president By Pat Deavoll

Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers President and Ashburton arable farmer David Clark will be stepping down from his role tomorrow. Vice-president David Acland of Mt Somers will be taking on the role in Clark’s stead. Clark said the role he had been in the last three years had provided challenges. M. bovis was one challenge he took on after being involved in the issue with the previous president, he said. “The realities with the M. bovis programme were, whilst we agreed with the seriousness of the disease and the need for a strong biosecurity response, we had to work closely to put as much pressure on MPI and the leaders of the programme as we could to improve the way the M. bovis response dealt with our farmers. “And I have continued to do this in my presidency. On reflection, I have been uneasy about the impact on individual families. “The programme has improved dramatically, and I am comfortable with how they conduct themselves now but on reflection, I was uncomfortable with the impact on farming families. “I think the impact on the individuals outweighed what went on in the first two and a half years of

Jaspal Singh of South Canterbury has won Dairy Manager of the Year at the 2022 New Zealand Dairy Industry of the Year awards at a gala dinner held in Christchurch last Saturday. Singh stood out as an immigrant who was professional, detailed, diligent, and possessed a desire to succeed with a dedication to growth. “From the moment we entered the farm gate to the time we left, we witnessed an immaculately presented farm and a polished and professional presentation which highlighted Singh’s knowledge and sense of responsibility for the farm’s management and performance,” said dairy manager head judge Gray Beagley. Singh was an information technology (computer applications) student in India and came to New Zealand to further his studies in 2014. Upon completion of his degree in 2015 he joined the dairy industry as a farm assistant in Mossburn and is now farm manager in Waimate. He won over $19,000 in prizes including the DeLaval Livestock Management merit award, Fonterra Dairy Management merit award, and the Meridian Environmental and Sustainability merit award.

Your Stars ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): When you think you can improve things, you lead the way. But if you believe someone else has the right vision, you’ll be the first to follow. It’s not about power; it’s about the group good. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): The difference between collecting and hoarding is in the acquisition. Hoarding is indiscriminate. How do you know when a thing is worth having? GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Your mission is to thrive as a contributor to the planet. You don’t get those bent exclusively on promoting their own welfare. Your life is convincing enough though. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Life delivers poetic truths to you, brief and contrasting. Because much is left out, you’re able to fill in the blanks and reconcile contradictions. If you can’t make sense, make art. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Some of your best teachers will have died years ago. Their lives are your lesson plans, and they may seem more accessible to your apprenticeship than anyone breathing. You receive answers from beyond. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Avoid being like the tourist who packs too heavily or makes too many reservations, becoming beholden to selfcreated obligations. All will be taken care of when you go with less and trust the moment. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You don’t have to do things perfectly to belong to the group. In fact, since everyone in the group is imperfect, your flaws are part of your dues, so no need to hide them away. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Easy games don’t make champions. It’s as though this day is sensitive to what you need: nothing too startling, just a gentle unfolding of enough challenge to make things interesting. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Your education continues, and is going much stronger outside of formal schooling than it is or ever was inside of it. With a hunger to learn as your driver, you devour whole feasts of knowledge. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You’ll harmonise your work with the needs of the people around you. You’ll be reminded how each of them has their own circle of influence and these resonances extend indefinitely. Every small gesture matters. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You are a country with your own language, laws, culture, food and aesthetic. Who is taking the time to learn the country of you? Who is “living” there without fully adapting to the place? PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Lao-Tzu says “many words lead to exhaustion,” and you’ve felt this while falling asleep with a book or in a lecture or just wishing you were asleep when someone overshares the minutia. OUR VIEW

Goldberg our iconic character

I

t was an email that arrived a few days ago. “It’s Goldberg here,’’ it read. “I’ve got some sad news to tell you.’’ And that was it. The sad news, of course, was the announcement that Anthony “Goldberg’’ Bartlett was saying goodbye to Ashburton, leaving to return home to family in Gisborne. Our mobility scootering, Viking hat-wearing, always smiling, always up for a chat Goldberg will leave before the end of next month after 26 years in Ashburton. “Everyone is welcome to come and say goodbye to me,’’ he told us yesterday, the emotion of it all apparent to see. And Goldberg wasn’t the only one to show a little emotion. News of his departure on

Daryl Holden the Guardian’s Facebook page drew widespread reaction from community members – kids and adults alike – who have met or simply know of Ashburton’s town identity. The Facebook post was easily among the most popular to appear on the page, highlighting the impact he has made since moving to Ashburton from Gisborne in 1996. All the responses expressed sadness that he was going. They wished Goldberg all the best, saying they would miss his cheerful nature, his waving

to motorists and just seeing him zipping around town, with different hats for different times of the year a popular clothing trait.

While we all rushed around and coped with busy lives and the challenges that comes with it, Goldberg was there day after day just being himself. And with

While we all rushed around and coped with busy lives and the challenges that comes with it, Goldberg was there day after day just being himself. And with a smile on his dial.

The outpouring of sadness showed just what a difference a unique character can make and to a level that perhaps surprises us all until it comes to an end. He brought a bit of simple, harmless fun to so many and he showed an interest.

a smile on his dial. In many ways, the 46-yearold was Ashburton’s version of Christchurch’s Wizard, but without that official title and cathedral-like setting to pontificate on life theories and perform and entertain in public.

Goldberg, though, has always been entertaining and we mean that in the nicest possible way, and it was always good and even reassuring to see him around town, especially over recent times. Because the streets of Ashburton have been quiet and often empty for much of the past two years as Covid-19 and the redevelopment work of the town’s CBD kept people away. But not Goldberg. He was a regular, our special town character, our familiar face but, sadly, not for much longer. Soon he’ll be gone and a tiny piece of Ashburton will leave with him. So, if you see Goldberg around town, be sure to say thanks for just being himself and bringing unintended joy to so many. It’s the least we can do.

Ellis, Mitchell become Mid Canterbury Sporting Legends Matt Markham They’ve long been regarded as legends in their chosen sporting fields, but on Friday night two new names were added to a growing list of official Mid Canterbury Legends as part of the Mid Canterbury Sports Awards. Silver Fern netballer, Angela Mitchell and Olympic cyclist, Lauren Ellis were both inducted into the Legends of Mid Canterbury Sport as part of the night’s festivities – acknowledging their remarkable careers which were both born in this region. And for both, as they accepted their induction, the beginnings they had in Mid Canterbury were a cornerstone to paving the way for their success on the sporting field. “I feel so honoured, and I’m proud to be from Mid Canterbury,” Ellis said as she was inducted. A Commonwealth Games medallist, a World Championship contender and an Olympian, Ellis is now back calling Mid Canterbury home having relocated within the past two years and touched on her early days at the Tinwald Cycling Club as she followed her brother along. Being given a bike to take part, instead of sitting on the sidelines, her fierce determination drove her to the top locally and from there her career blossomed and grew. Under questioning from MC, James Cochrane, Ellis noted the Rio Olympics

as her career highlight, in particular the Omnium, where she finished fourth. “It’s one of the only moments in my career where I think I became really emotional, looking up into the crowd and seeing my family there was incredible.” The tale of Angela Mitchell rising to the top of the netball world in New Zealand, started from a similar background to that of Ellis. She began her journey in Mid Canterbury, plying her trade for the Ashburton College side where she said the foundations were laid. “I have such strong memories of playing in Mid Canterbury when I was young, and they are some of my best memories playing secondary school sport here,” she said. Mitchell went on from her schooling days to play for the Canterbury Flames from 1998 to 2002 in which time she was selected to play for the Silver Ferns between 2001 and 2004. She played five tests in the national side, debuting in 2002 against Jamaica. She then went on to play for the Otago Rebels for three years before retiring from the sport, only to come out of retirement to again return to play for Canterbury in 2009. Mitchell is now also back in Mid Canterbury, teaching at Ashburton College and is the current president of Mid Canterbury Netball, giving back, behind the scenes, to a sport that gave her so much. Ellis and Mitchell are the fifth and sixth inductees into Mid Canterbury Sporting Legends, joining Stacey McKerchar, Hayden Roulston, Paul Ackerley and Ann Shurrock.

First titles secured Mid Canterbury on the bowling mats fight out 3-all draw Matt Markham

Matt Markham The first two champions of the Ashburton Indoor Bowls season were crowned on Saturday, in very different circumstances. Because while for Mat Bassett his win in the Jim Patterson marked his fifth championship title and saw him earn his Gold Star for that feat, for Doug Thorne, who claimed the Ken Hampton singles, it was his first. The two titles were played alongside each other on Saturday, with the Jim Patterson event an open singles and the Ken Hampton a masters event. Illness and the lurking threat of Covid impacted on both events, with limited entries across the board, but it didn’t detract from the quality of play on the mats. Bassett lined up in a field of five players in a round robin event, claiming wins in all four of his matches to grab the title ahead of Michael Lawson, who finished the day with three wins. Bassett’s fifth title comes 14 years after his first in the Open Fours back in 2008, with his other victories coming in the Championship Fours in 2010, the Open Fours in 2012 and the Men’s Singles in 2021. For Thorne, the win marked his first title, and he had to stave off the challenge of seven rivals in a hotly contested competition. Four of the eight entrants qualified for post-section, with Thorne beating Bernice Laird in one semi-final and Winston Lee beating Rod Webb.

Doug Thorne won the Ken Hampton Masters Singles on Saturday, his first Ashburton championship title.

The final between the pair was a close match, with Thorne taking out the title 12-10. Meanwhile, this Thursday night seven pairings will return for the post-section stage of the Championship Pairs. Last Thursday night the qualifying stage of the competition was held in the event, which is now a drawn championship, meaning players are drawn into teams as opposed to entering as a combination. Sunday was supposed to see the first representative fixture of the season, the Hight Trophy, played for but for the second time it’s been postponed due to illness around the district. Tomorrow will mark the first representative game instead when 16 local players head to Timaru to compete for the Calder Shield.

Sometimes a draw is just as good as a win, and on Saturday that rang true for the Mid Canterbury Senior Men’s Hockey side in Canterbury Hockey’s Division One competition. Up against the powerful Carlton Redcliffs side at Nga Puna Wai, there were a few scores to settle on the turf for both sides. Despite Mid Canterbury only having played in the competition for a season, there’s a bit of history starting to develop between the two teams. Mid Canterbury knocked Carlton, who were the top of the table side, out of the competition in the semi-finals last year via a penalty shoot-out, so Saturday’s first rematch was always going to be an intriguing affair, with the Challenge Shield on the line. Carlton kicked into gear first with their first goal of the match in the opening quarter to take a lead. Mid Canterbury clawed their way back into the game in the second with a goal to Mike Millar who smashed one past the goalkeeper, but Carlton were straight back into their work and grabbed a 2-1 lead heading into the halftime break. A scoreless third quarter left Mid Canterbury needing a big push in the

final stages of the match, and it came through some good work through the middle from Scott Marshall who found an open Brad Nordqvist to score the equaliser, leaving both sides with a feeling of déjà vu with not much game time left. A turnover for Carlton changed the match though, as they scored their third and took the lead again, and Mid Canterbury hopes looked buried with two minutes to go. But a desperate string of attacks on the Carlton goal finished with the ball at Tim Harford’s feet, and he put the ball into the net with 10 second left on the clock to save the match with a 3-all draw. Mid Canterbury now sit atop of the standings for the season with five wins and a draw from their seven matches and will head into this weekend with the bye. The Mid Canterbury Women’s team also took on Carlton Redcliffs on Saturday – a tough match for the side against the competition table-toppers. The side put in a strong performance against a very good side, but were unable to match the quality of their rivals, who ran away with a 5-2 victory. Two goals to Sam Dalziel, who is making a habit of finding the back of the goal was one of the highlights of the match, but there was plenty of encouragement from a strong second half from the side who managed to eke out a 2-1 moral victory in the second stanza.

A weekend of change Matt Markham With two rounds remaining before the playoff stage of the Combined Country Rugby competition, the majority of Mid Canterbury’s four sides are in a good space after a weekend of change across the three pools. Southern, Methven and Celtic all grabbed valuable wins to push themselves right toward the top of their respective pools, but for Rakaia it’s all but an insurmountable task as the normal season comes to a close. Southern were too good for Rakaia at the Rakaia Domain, winning 56-15, while Methven kept their undefeated record intact with a 38-10 win over Oxford and Celtic fought out another close match, edging Prebbleton 32-21. The local derby at Rakaia turned into a one-sided affair as Southern stretched their legs, scoring seven tries. Thomas Middleton, in his debut season of senior rugby in Mid Canterbury, grabbed an impressive 26 points for the match with a try, six conversions and three penalties to become Mid Canterbury’s leading point-scorer in the competition, with 43 points in the bank. The two sides traded blows for the first 25 minutes, with Rakaia in front thanks to a Thomas Whittaker penalty after five minutes, but when Middleton crossed for his try Southern kicked into gear. A penalty, then a try to Makasiale Kauvanua took them out in front, but a late try to Rakaia’s Peter Taylor kept the hosts in the game heading into the break, down 8-17. Middleton slotted back-toback penalties early in the second half only for Rakaia to bounce straight back through a try to George Denis to signal they weren’t going away. But that surged Southern into action as they scored three tries in 10 minutes, with a double to Mason Briant and one to Matthew McAtamney to put the game beyond doubt. A second try to Kauvanua and then one to Adam Williamson

Short and sharp Methven 38 (Thomas

Henderson, Manasa Bari, Matt Stone, Manasa Vula, Tom Reekie, Charlie Brown tries; Reuben Early four conv.) beat Oxford 10. Celtic 23 (Raitube Vasurakuta 2, Shepherd Mhembere, Elyh McKibbin tries; Nathan McCloy pen) beat Prebbleton 21. Southern 56 (Mason Briant 2, Makasiale Kauvanua 2, Thomas Middleton, Matthew McAtamney, Adam Williamson tries; Middleton 6 conv, 3 pen) beat Rakaia 15 (Peter Taylor, George Denis tries, Thomas Whittaker 1 conv, 1 pen).

A 26-point haul from Southern’s Thomas Middleton took him to the top of the local points scorers standings for the Combined competition.

near full-time put a rubber stamp on the performance, as the Combined Competition defending champions announced they are on song with the playoffs looming, while also sounding a warning to their fellow local sides with the Watters Cup just around the corner. Southern head to Mayfield this week to take on West Melton – a match they should win – but they will also have one eye on their final round clash with Springston, which could well determine who finishes runner-up in their pool, with Saracens clear at the top of the standings and unlikely to be caught. It’s a tough spot for Rakaia though. They’re effectively out of the playoffs race with two games remaining, but can turn their attention toward building for the Watters Cup with games against Springston this week and then Rolleston in the final round. Methven’s pool is starting to look a little congested, thanks in large to a shock defeat for one of the competition heavyweights on the weekend. But relief is coming this week, which should tidy things up a little. Darfield’s impressive effort to knock over Southbridge has left three teams tied at the top of the competition on 17 points, Methven being one of them after they were too slick for Oxford at home on Saturday. Methven take on Southbridge this week in a match which will clear some of the traffic, while Lincoln, who are the other side at the top of the standings play the fourth placed Darfield. The Methven lads were far from polished on Saturday, but

got the job done, scoring six tries on their way to a 38-10 victory in their last home game of the normal season. In an explosive 10 minutes of play in the first half, they scored half of their points to put Oxford to bed as they scored three tries in quick succession through Manasa Bari, Manasa Vula and Matt Stone – following on from an early effort from Andrew Henderson. The second half was a little messy, as Methven toiled hard but pushed one pass too many and let opportunities slip. They did score through Tom Reekie and Charlie Brown, but coach Shane Enright will have a few work-ons noted down for this week, ahead of Southbridge on the other side of the Rakaia River. Celtic, like Methven, find themselves in a tie at the top of the standings after they picked up points on the weekend, but they don’t have the luxury of two

weeks of play to build on that, with the bye in the final round of the competition. They’ll need a dominant victory over Rolleston at home this weekend to consolidate their place but with five teams still in play for the top two spots, it could be a nervous seven days for the green machine after this weekend’s match. Not for the first time this season, their fans were subjected to a nervous final stage of the match as they took a slender lead into the final quarter against Prebbleton, a lead they didn’t yield, winning 23-21. Raitube Vasurakuta did what he does best in the first half of the match, scoring twice to take his try tally for the Combined Competition to eight, with doubles in the last three matches. A try into extra time in the opening stanza by Shepherd Mhembere pushed Celtic into the break with a slender 18-14 lead.

Standings Pool A: Lincoln 17, Methven

Pool B: Waihora 17, Celtic 17, Glenmark/Cheviot 15, Prebbleton 12, Kaiapoi 12, Hurunui 5, Rolleston 0 Pool C: Saracens 24, Southern 15, Springston 15, Ohoka 11, Rakaia 5, West Melton 3, Hornby 2. Prebbleton took control of the match in the second half with an early try to lead 21-18, but when Celtic scored out wide 10 minutes later through Elyh McKibbin, they wrestled it back and never let it go, holding on for the win in what could prove a competition-defining 20 minutes for the side.

James Hastings appears about to be cut in half by the Rakaia defence during his side’s win.
