Murney Main one of the best Malcolm Hopwood The Murney Main building will still be standing in 200 years’ time, promises trust member, Willie Murney. Murney was reflecting on two national awards the building has received from the Registered Master Builders’ Association. In the association’s annual awards, announced in Christchurch, Murney Main won the Value Award for the best building in the $3-$10 million category and a gold award in the commercial project category. The gold award is assessed on the total project including design, architecture, materials used, method of construction, quality of work, team performance and finished product. “It was very exciting. To get recognised on a national level was very special,” Murney said. “We’ve always prided ourselves on the finished product and the two awards emphasise the quality of construction.” “The building’s going to last long after I’ve gone.” Murney Main was nominated for the awards in 2021 by architect RM Design and presented last Friday to Willie Murney, his mother, Kate, and sisters, Jayne and Tara, also members of the Murney Trust. “With all the work put in, it was great to see the recognition extending to our builders, Bradford Building Limited, and the architects,” he said. While a number of gold awards were handed out, the Value Award was solely presented to Murney and his family members. “It was considered the best alongside other commercial, residential and industrial buildings throughout New Zealand,” he said. “I hope it puts Ashburton on the map.” It also encourages us to consider another major project in the future.” The judges commented on the building “combining contemporary architecture with heritage materials of copper and timber detailing. A standout feature of the building is the cantilevered balcony to the north and west façade,” they said. He is delighted the building is fully used with a bank on the ground floor, the Fine Lion restaurant on level one, Genesis Capital on level two and the Murney Trust Office at the top. A current project is the recent purchase of the former Tuarangi Home. Murney said a final decision on its future use will be made around August/September as he’s still considering a range of options, although he confirms it will be “some sort of residential development”.

Barriers added to improve intersection safety manager Colin MacKay confirmed the water filled barriers were added for safety. “The aim is to make the roundabout as safe as possible ahead of the traffic signals becoming operational and we thank all drivers and commuters for slowing down and driving with care, especially around pedestrians and cyclists,” MacKay said Falloon said that the project should have been better planned between Waka Kotahi and KiwiRail. “I still think the delays are unacceptable and they should have co-ordinated it better between the two,” Falloon said. Brown still has questions over the timing and delivery of KiwiRail’s portion of the project. Those questions will be asked directly to Waka Kotahi and KiwiRail when representatives front up to the Ashburton District Council meeting on June 1.

Daniel Alvey Adding barriers will make the ongoing road works at the Walnut Avenue intersection safer, according to a local resident. Shirley Falloon was concerned about the risk of an accident at the intersection. She was very happy to see the barriers in place. “I think that’s quite an improvement. Because it’s quite a sturdy construction I think people will slow down and treat it more like a roundabout,” Falloon said. Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown was pleased to see the concerns had been heard and to see some improvements being made to the temporary roundabouts. Waka Kotahi principal project

Mayor: One size does not fit all Jonathan Leask More one size fits all legislation. Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown says the government’s emissions reduction plan announced last week just isn’t feasible in the regions. “They want to put more money into public transport and get people out of cars, but I would like to see practically how that is going to work in a district like Mid Canterbury where we have

its Emissions Reduction Plan recently and wants at least 30 per cent of vehicles to be zero emissions by 2035, and people to drive 20 per cent less instead walking, cycling, or using public transport. Something that isn’t practical in Mid Canterbury. The only public transport available is the Community Connector, running an on demand service from Monday to Friday, between 9am and 4.30pm from rural locations to and from Ashburton. Brown said for a public transport system to be introduced it would currently be implemented by Environment Canterbury

and funded by ratepayers if it was feasible. Funding cycleways to the likes of Rakaia, Methven, and Hinds would be an expensive exercise and Brown couldn’t envisage many commuters opting to get on a bike in the middle of winter to get to work. The plan raises issues of housing availability and affordability to cut down on the commuters, but with concerns about urban sprawl it would require Ashburton development to go up instead of out. Another key feature of the plan is looking to cut freight transport emissions by 35 per cent by 2035, but Brown said most freight

Nervous times for Taylor Lili Haydon Ashburton teenager Taylor Doyle has far more to deal with than originally thought in Germany, including a potentially life-threatening artery compression. Doyle, just 14, is in Germany where another operation was possible for her debilitating vascular condition, median acute ligament syndrome (MALS). That’s a condition which results in tissue in the chest area compressing the artery that supplies blood to the organs in the upper abdomen. It has made eating, drinking, and sometimes breathing painfully difficult for Doyle, who suffered worrying weight loss because the pain and nausea symptoms worsened when she ate and drank. A successful MALS operation in Sydney last month gave hope all was on the improve. Further tests in Germany, including a diagnostic ultrasound, have confirmed the original MALS diagnosis. But seven compressed arteries – and not just the one – have also been detected. That included one which could be life threatening and may result in the need for yet another operation for the brave youngster, with her mother, Zalie Doyle, at her side. Zalie said from Germany that she had her suspicions Taylor may have had other compressions, but it was “far more than

The man that owned the car was unharmed according to police. A police spokesperson said they received reports of a man being threatened with a firearm and having his vehicle stolen in the Riccarton area at about 7.25pm. The pair were then arrested in Ashburton at 8.20pm. Along with the pair a firearm was seized, police said charges will follow.

Hawker’s other love though is his mullet, and only lets professionals touch it. He has been proudly growing his hairdo since age four. ‘’It is part of me, they are my luscious locks,’’ Matthew said. According to his mother Lynette Hawker, he is known as the Cowboy with the Mullet in Methven. But after the twins announced in March that they had both been diagnosed with breast cancer, he

wanted to help somehow. So he rang Lynda, and told her he was going to chop his mullet off for her. “It was so emotional, she cried and then he cried. She said you don’t have to do that, and he replied, but I want to, I love you,” Lynette said. In two days, Hawker had raised over $500 through his online Givealittle page. “I would like to get to $2000, but anything is nice, it’s for a good cause. I love Lynda,” Matthew said. The mighty mullet chop will be held on July 16 at the Topp Friends Dinner and Show fundraiser on stage in front of everyone.

Daniel Alvey Ashburton scooter riders have raised over $23,000 for the New Zealand Cancer Society in this year’s Scooter Safari over the Arthur’s Pass.

Ashburton’s David Oakley was pleased to make it across the main divide safe and sound with his Yamaha Razz, raising over $2000 in the process. “You don’t have to be a hero to do this, it is just really an enjoyable ride from Christchurch to the West Coast with a sore bottom.” “It’s like being part of a big family,” he said. Oakley finished the run without issue, after completing last

year’s event on half throttle. The other Ashburton team, the Croy family, ran three scooters in Care Bear outfits, and raised around $21,000 in the process. Trevor Croy said it was great to have the family back together for the first time in a while due to Covid. “It was great family fun and was good to raise some money for the Cancer Society at the same time.” The family also walked away

with the award for the best dressed. While final tallies are still being added up, Trevor and his son were the second ranked team overall. Croy said the weather was beautiful, with some rain as they got to the Arthur’s Pass. The Care Bear onesies survived well, only getting slightly damp. The event brought out all types of scooters, including ones de-

signed as ambulances, some with trailers and even one designed to look like a jetski. Oakley wanted to thank his local sponsor McKay and Donaldson for getting his bike ready to run for the weekend. “Full marks to McKay and Donaldson.” The event is tipped to raise $350,000 for the Cancer Society, which is the most ever raised since the event began.

Food trucks to be moved on New sites

Jonathan Leask Food truck operators are unfazed about no longer being able to regularly trade at Baring Square East. That’s because of proposed alternative options, or they have already abandoned trading in the CBD. The Ashburton District Council’s draft trading in public places bylaw is proposing that mobile businesses can stay open later and in more places, but scrubbed Baring Square East as a permitted site because of the cafe in the new Library and Civic Centre. Strategy and compliance group manager Jane Donaldson said part of the bylaw restricts mobile food vendors from operating at least 100m away from any premises selling a similar type of food. While sites around Baring Square East are proposed to be off limits, a new site is being proposed just up East Street across from the old post office. Tu Meke BBQ’s Andrew Poswillo has been operating in the Ashburton CBD since February and said while Havelock Street is an ideal site, given the council was providing new alternatives it wasn’t such a big deal as they are a destination site utilising social media channels. “We just need somewhere with access to power,” Poswillo said. He also has plans on finding a suitable permanent site in the future.

Malcolm Hopwood It’s not a big amount, but it means a lot to Dorie School. In the Principals’ Discretionary Fund, allocated by the Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury, Dorie School received $1800 from an annual grant of $110,911 to Mid Canterbury schools, playcentres and kindergartens. But principal, Anthony Dorreen, says “it’s an annual bonus we receive”. “It’s very important. It’s a nice surprise and gives us the ability to help families who are struggling financially,” he said. Dorreen received the payment last Friday and will use it as a discretionary fund for the next 12 months. “It assists such things as school camps, uniforms, swimming and music tuition and stationery for students,” he said. Dorreen doesn’t use it as a handout but, when a major cost such as a school camp occurs, he will top up what parents can pay. Dorie is a small community and he generally hears when parents are having difficulty meeting school costs. Dorreen emphasises the importance of school camps for his senior students which extend to Year 8. In the past few years they’ve gone to Christchurch, Dunedin, Mount Cook, Stewart Island and, this year, to a retreat at

Dorie School pupils have found a way to extend the life of the Ashburton Guardian. It will keep people warm during winter. Once it’s read from cover to cover, students crush the pages together, soak them in water, then compress them into a brick mould which squeezes out the excess moisture. The former Guardians, plus a few ODTs, are left to dry for several weeks. When the fire bricks are totally dry, they’re ready to burn and keep the locals warm during the next few months. Project leader, Hope Peters, 12, has yet to decide how they’ll be marketed, but believes the priority is home use first, then kept for the school’s camp fires.

The Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury explains their annual funding is granted so students are “supported to

achieve their potential and feel more connected and valued by enabling all students to participate in educational opportunities with equity”. Other grant recipients include Ashburton and Mount Hutt colleges and Carew Peel Forest, Mayfield, Methven, Mt Somers, Springburn, Our Lady of the Snows and Wakanui schools.

Calf rearing expo brings experts under one roof know that care “ We of the newborn

Pat Deavoll Dairy Women’s Network will be holding a Calf Rearing Expo in Ashburton on July 5. Dairy farmers and calf rearers are invited to hear SealesWinslow nutrition and quality manager Natalie Hughes, and AgriVantage technical advisor and nutritionist Natalie Chrystal, present on how to maximise the genetic potential of calves in their early weeks for a lifetime of high performance. With a focus on turning today’s calf into tomorrow’s cow, Hughes and Chrystal will share best practices and recent science to help calf rearers and farm owners get their calves off to the right start. Topics covered will include first principles of calf rearing, housing, and care for newborns, feeding and understanding the different feed options available, weaning to pasture, and achieving liveweight gains for heifers. “It all starts before day one of the calf’s life, planning and preparation before calving sets us up for a successful season. “The aim is to break down the science into practical application so rearers achieve the most profitable results.” Calf rearing is a critical time on farm for both people and the animals, with future performance determined by the quality and management of newborn calves from the time of birth

through to 12 weeks of age. “We want attendees to walk away from the day feeling prepared and ready for the calf rearing season. It’s a time that can be overwhelming so they need to be able to walk away not only with knowledge around best practice, but tools and resources they can action,” Dairy Women’s Network

CEO Jules Benton said. At the expo attendees will have the opportunity to book a problem-solving slot with Hughes or Chrystal for any farm-specific challenges and questions. With sector partners and organisations hosting trade stands, dairy farmers will be able to tap into the knowledge of experts in animal care and nutrition under one roof, making calf rearing preparation easier than ever.

Protecting precious species

The concept of Moving Day is entrenched in New Zealand dairy farming.

PHOTO SHELLIE EVANS

Moving Day creates opportunities on farm Over the next couple of months, farmworkers around the country will be on the lookout for new opportunities as part of the annual Moving Day movement. The concept of Moving Day is entrenched in New Zealand dairy farming – it’s all about opportunities to move up in the industry, take on new challenges and look to the future. Moving Day is when sharemilkers, dairy farm assistance workers, farm managers, and 2IC workers pack up their belongings – in many cases including the dairy herd – and shift to a new location. The tradition is an important day in the New Zealand

dairy farming calendar – usually linked to June 1, but watch out any time now for the move. It’s a chance for farmworkers to climb the ranks, move on to bigger farms with greater challenges and opportunities, chase better money or just look for a change of location. As well as the many positive opportunities that an annual day of move and change can present, it also creates plenty of disruption. There’s even talk around the industry at the moment about whether Moving Day itself puts a bit too much strain on families and local communities. It’s certainly a stressful time, especially if the sharemilker

has a herd of cows and has to organise trucking transport and paddocks to hold them to stretch their legs when travelling long distances. We all know moving is hard enough without the added strain of shifting farm equipment like tractors, quad bikes, and implements. Not to mention the hardest workers of all: the loyal farm dogs and their accommodation. Then you get to the new farm, and you’re faced with setting it all up again. You can only hope the previous tenant hasn’t left the farm in a huge mess with no feed for the arriving cows and a lot more work. Getting to know the new

farm also takes time, you’ve got to learn the quirks of the new water system, cowsheds, paddocks, fencing, fertiliser history, and all that goes with it. Then you’ll be hoping the new boss is a good one, otherwise, you’re left with the “why did we move” conversation over breakfast. There are plenty of opportunities and a fair number of challenges linked to our annual Moving Day. So, if you see a harassed-looking farmer towing a trailer full of gear in the next couple of months – give them a wave and a smile and wish them well on the move.

It’s hoped a large-scale pest control project across three properties on Banks Peninsula will help bird and plant life flourish. Still in its early stages, the work is in part, an extension of a trapping programme that was already being undertaken by one of those landowners in Western Valley. The project will expand into the two adjoining properties – incorporating the top of Kaituna Valley. The site includes more than 370 hectares of legally protected land through a Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust (BPCT) covenant, and a Department of Conservation (DOC) reserve – Kaituna Spur. Despite this formal protection and the landowners’ best efforts, browsing (chewing) pests such as deer and possums, along with pigs, have continued to degrade native plant cover – while predators have targeted vulnerable bird species. ECan is contributing more than $34,000 through two separate funds, plus an ‘in kind’ contribution of project management and vegetation monitoring to check for signs of possum browsing. The aim is to reduce predation and browsing to help the natural regeneration of natives including totara, matai and kahikatea. This type of old-growth podocarp forest cover is rare on the peninsula. Land management and biodiversity advisor, Billy Bartrum, said the work could have a significant impact on the future make-up of the site’s trees and shrubs. “There are certain species that are more palatable for pests. If they all get browsed, it can change the whole composition of a forest. So, it’s about the area’s overall health and diversity.” Landowner Antony Johnson said the impetus for the project came from observing trapping success over several years on his family’s own property. “There was also the concern of heavy browsing evident in a local DOC reserve, highlighting that even remnant ecosystems need active pest control. “This could just be the start. Other nearby property owners have also expressed a desire to get involved, meaning the project could expand further.”

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): As far as you’re concerned, power, money and fame are not the goal. There’s nothing wrong with those things, but they are only worth obtaining insofar as they can be utilised to create a better community. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Dreaming big used to entail thinking of a blown-up version of your wish. Now dreaming big entails expanding your vision to include the best interest of the highest number of people. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Loved ones will grow and change along with you. This is no coincidence. You’re helping one another grow. You are good at celebrating the many passages and incarnations inside of this life together. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): The detective discovers the truth by finding the lies and cover-ups. And you’ll figure out what you want to do by trying things that turn out to be definitely not that. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You believe in giving more than you get, and yet it’s going to be a really difficult thing to accomplish because your generosity keeps repaying you exponentially. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Embrace inevitabilities you cannot get away from. There is no living in the light without the contrast to help you see things. There is no retreat from one’s own shadow, but at least you have company! LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): There is nothing selfish about figuring out what you like. You do the world a huge favour by learning yourself well. The struggle against one’s own baser instincts can be as ferocious as any external conflict. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Delight yourself. Don’t wait for someone else to do it. Anyone who’d memorised your preferences would still be clueless as to nuances of quantity and variation that might please you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): The difference between a step forward and a step back is the destination. You think you know where you’re headed, but life has other ideas. If you’re moving, you’re making progress. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Your receptiveness earns you an insider’s position. You’ll learn so much by listening well that you just may save your own agenda and stories for another time. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You’ll learn through cautionary examples and aspirational models. The lessons are like a marinade; you have to soak in it to get the flavour, and there’s no way to shorten the process. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You can never have too many friends, and your current stars suggest you could use a more diverse array. Skills and orientations different from your own will teach you and afford you rare advantages.

OUR VIEW

Jeff Wilson, sport’s great allrounder

H

is mum still calls him Jeffrey. Most of us know him as Jeff Wilson, or Goldie as he was dubbed because of his ability to produce something out of nothing. He with that golden touch. Well, as reported in his old hometown of Invercargill on Saturday, the emergence of one of New Zealand’s finest sporting stars was remembered from 30 years ago to the day. That was when Wilson was unveiled to the sporting world via a remarkable schoolboy rugby display in 1992. Wilson, playing at fullback, scored 66 points in his team’s 1026 win. He ran in nine of his team’s 18 tries, kicked 15 conversions and news of his exploits graced the front pages of nearly every newspaper in New Zealand. A star was most definitely born. But what followed was the most remarkable rise to the very top, the like of which we will probably

Daryl Holden never see again. Just 17 months after Wilson’s 66-point schoolboy demolition, he was scoring three tries on debut for the All Blacks against Scotland in Edinburgh in November 1993. Eight months before that, Wilson had already played cricket for New Zealand in a one-day series against Australia. He’d become a Double All Black – someone who has represented New Zealand in cricket and rugby – before he’d turned 21. It truly was crazy stuff but not, perhaps, a massive surprise to those who knew of the boy wonder, who was kicking rugby conversions in Year 5 when no-one else that age could do it. He played senior club cricket as a 14-year-old

and was a dominant fast bowler a year later for Southland’s top-flight Hawke Cup cricket team. He had been on the national youth sports radar for athletics, rugby, cricket, and basketball from a very young age. Simply, he was the kid that excelled at any sport he tried his hand at. A certain managing editor of the Ashburton Guardian (yes, it may’ve been me) remembers the day very clearly when a young Wilson turned up to tennis with his mother and sent down a thunderbolt ace that I never saw coming. I think he was 11. So that was the Jeff Wilson story, one worth remembering and celebrating. It showed what was possible and that you could achieve from anywhere and at the very highest of levels. Goldie proved that in less than two years.

And one more thing . . . This is some fight we’re getting

into. That’s Google and Facebook versus the Ashburton Guardian. Okay, so calling it a fight is not correct for one moment and it’s also not just the Guardian versus the two digital platform superpowers. Good grief, no. We’re got lots of friends on our team and two good captains hoping to get us some payback for the use of our content. The Guardian, and 27 other Kiwi publishers, representing a diverse group who print more than 100 titles across New Zealand, have been given Commerce Commission approval to enter negotiations with Google and Facebook. Importantly, two former Australia news executives are going into bat on our behalf. Both have extensive experience in the Australian market where a bargaining code led to more than $A200 million in annual payments to the news media across the ditch from Google and Facebook. They’ll lead the collective

bargaining process for those New Zealand publishers, who have chosen to join the News Publishers’ Association’s (NPA) initiative to seek fair payment from Google and Facebook for use of our news articles on their digital platforms. We cannot overstate how important this collective bargaining process is for the New Zealand news media industry. For many, their sustainability depends upon it, which is something touched on in a roundabout sort of way by NPA general manager Brook Cameron. “Google and Facebook have built businesses of unimaginable scale and power, using journalism paid for by others while dominating the digital advertising market,” she said. “We are seeking an outcome that allows independent New Zealand news publishers to keep investing in great journalism, because a thriving Kiwi media sector is critical to a healthy democracy.”

OPINION

Are we ready for the incoming green storm? Matt Markham

I

t is only natural, because it’s been so borne into our psyche, that at this time of the year we often drift off into thinking about the All Blacks, and what might lie in wait for the international calendar. Super Rugby is nearly all done and dusted. Some might even argue, do we even care? It’s been a hippity-hoppity kind of season, with almost as many cards handed out as there have been tries, and the open-ended nature of the format where eight of the 12 teams make the playoffs kind of belittles the whole deal, losing a lot of the interest. Perhaps we should care more, after all we’re potentially heading into the first international calendar in a long time where there are more question marks about our beloved national side than there are answers. Winning is what we expect. But are we really sure we’re going to see that as often as we have become accustomed to over the years. Forget the apparent superlatives around the rise and rise of Australian rugby, what about the first threat of the year?

Ian Foster will need to have his troops firing from the start of the international season. Our new, old foe, the Irish. Remember how they beat us last year in Dublin? Not just beat us either, dismantled us. Well, they’ll arrive on our shores soon for a test series

between the two sides that has more riding on it than anyone can probably care to remember. One of the greatest assets of the All Blacks has been the aura that has always surrounded them.

They’ve demanded respect whoever they’ve played and just facing up against them has had nations around the world second guessing their own every move. But lose a few matches here and there and the mystique slowly fades away. Sides that could have never dreamed about beating the might of New Zealand now know they have a chance. And so, the challenge is to repel that in the only way we know how. By winning. Ian Foster needs to have his troops ready to roll by the time the Irish arrive. There can be no easing in period, no silly allowances for a lack of team unity or cohesion. Perfection is the only result we’re after. If we play to our best and still get beaten, then so be it. But there must be no excuses. Australia and the Bledisloe Cup will come in time. And perhaps by then we might have even shown our good friends over the ditch that we’re not dropping behind the eightball, and are still in fact the best side in the world. But there’s a green storm coming first. And if we haven’t battened down the hatches by the time they arrive, what happens once they’ve gone will almost be irrelevant.

Big match looms for Baabaas Matt Markham A big chance to get another win on the board in Canterbury Rugby League’s Premier Men’s Reserve competition awaits the Ashburton Barbarians this week. It’s been a mixed bag start to the campaign for the Baabaas thus far in 2022, with one win and three losses from their four matches, but this week they’ll come up against a side with a similar record to them and be out to secure their second win of the season. After losing their first match of the season to Halswell, the side then had the bye before they put a complete performance on the paddock to win 48-8 against the Northern Bulldogs at the start of the month. A loss to Woolston followed, then on Saturday they trekked up to Kaiapoi to take on the Greymouth Greyhounds. The game wasn’t to be for the Ashburton side though as they were beaten 12-44. This week they’ll tackle the Burnham Chevaliers in the sixth round of the season, as they look to lift themselves out of the bottom quarter of the standings. The match will be played at Robilliard Park, next to Collegiate South, with a 1pm kick-off, with spectators more than welcome to come down and check the side out in action.

Hay pulls the right rein to success Matt Markham Split second decisions made during a race are often the difference between success and failure, and John Hay pulled the right rein for a big win at Rangiora on Sunday. The strike-rate Mid Canterbury horseman produced Wheels Of Fortune to win an $18,000 Graduation Final at the meeting, sitting in the cart himself to deliver a two-and-three-quarter length victory. But it was a decision Hay made halfway through the race, after working to the front in the early stages that paved the way to success. In control, he was under attack from John Dunn with Absolute Dynamite, but elected to retain the lead and park Dunn outside his wheel for the remainder of the race. “I thought John’s horse was the one to beat,” Hay told HRNZ after the race. “I thought if his horse sits parked, my horse has a chance to beat him. “When you are driving a nice

Wheels Of Fortune made it back-to-back wins in an $18,000 Graduation Final at Rangiora on Sunday for trainer and driver, John Hay. PHOTO SUPPLIED horse, you make the rest work.” That approach to driving is why Hay is one of very few to have driven over 1000 career driving wins, and he’s not lying when he says he was driving a nice horse either. Wheels Of Fortune has now won two of his three career starts

and looks yet another to come from a long line of runners from his Elgin stable that is set to go on and do a big job on the track. “He is a nice horse,” Hay said. “He is a bit green still, he is off and on the bit, but he has got the makings of a nice horse. “He has always shown promise,

he is just a big horse, but he is a good, gaited horse.” Wheels Of Fortune is raced by Peter Cates and his daughters, Nikki Copland and Joanne Lovett, and has now won $16,000 in stakes from just three race day appearances. The win kept Hay’s impressive

strike rate for the season going, with 36 runners to the races since the start of the year netting seven winners and 10 placings with an almost 50 per cent record on finishing top three. Mid Canterbury was all around the action on Sunday at Rangiora, with smart pacing mare Shanika making it back-to-back wins also in the race prior to Wheels Of Fortune. The daughter of Bettor’s Delight is raced by Wendy Nordqvist out of the Brent White stable, and has now won three times and placed on a further two occasions since joining the stable eight starts ago. Gerard O’Reilly handled the driving duties on Sunday. It was the second leg of a winning double weekend for Nordqvist, who found her way into the winners’ circle at Addington on Friday night as well with consistent pacer, Got You Covered. The Robert and Jenna Dunntrained pacer made it win No.10 from his 55-start career in the $20,000 event with a perfect drive from Robbie Close. Got You Covered has now earned more than $133,000 in his career, with a potential tilt at the New Zealand Trotting Cup in November now on the cards.

No chance for resting on laurels By Matt Markham & Steve Devereux matt.m@theguardian.co.nz

Laurels can be rested upon next week, but for now it’s still all on for Mid Canterbury’s senior rugby sides. With one week remaining in the normal season of the Country Combined competition, only one team across the 21 sides competing this season can confidently say they’ll make the top eight. That position is held by this season’s surprise packet, Saracens, who despite a shock loss last weekend can’t be knocked out of either first or second in their pool, even though they have the bye this week. For almost everyone else, it’s still very much a case of game on.

At a glance Methven 21 (Tom Reekie,

Manasa Vula, Xavier Barlett tries, Reuben Early 3 conv.) lost to Southbridge 32. Celtic 53 (Isireli Masiwini 2, Raitube Vasurakuta 2, Kaydis Hona, Shepherd Mhembere, Nicky Brown, Max Stapleton, Nathan McCloy tries, Elyh McKibbin 4 conv.) beat Rolleston 15. Southern 50 (Callum Burrell 2, Hamish Mackenzie 2, Matthew McAtamney 2, Adam Williamson, Will Mackenzie tries, Tom Middleton 3 conv, Will Green, Will Mackenzie conv.) beat West Melton 12. Rakaia 7 (Harry Ashworth try, Thomas Whittaker conv) lost to Springston 39.

Celtic and Southern kept their chances well alive with good wins on the weekend, but Celtic can do no more with the bye in the final round, while Southern can assure themselves a spot if they can topple Springston this weekend. Methven suffered their first defeat of the competition to Southbridge, and with it their chances of making the top two in a competitive pool became a lot harder, requiring a few results to go their way and a big win in their match against Ashley. For Rakaia, it was a tough mountain to climb already, and it became insurmountable when they were beaten by Springston on Saturday. Southern, Celtic and Methven can all either sneak through with a top two spot or through one of the two wildcard entries for the next two highest teams across all three pools, but the calculators are going to need to come out on Saturday night to work out exactly how it’s all going to unfold. In their final act for the normal season, and on their Club Day, Celtic shone bright with a glorious day and glorious footy against Rolleston, winning 53-15. Celtic’s first try, to Sireli Masiwini, came after a Rolleston clearance under pressure failed to find touch, and Celtic’s big runners brought it wide and eventually crashed through the defensive line. Sean McCormick was producing some barnstorming runs, and from one of them Raitube Vasurakuta received good ball and brushed through four tackles to score a few minutes later. The visitors were still well in the hunt, but the green machine was starting to take control, and another long-range effort followed before the break. A neat wrap-around move saw

skipper Nathan McCloy get the ball back, and he put Vasurakuta into a yawning gap on the halfway mark – with space to work in he’s a very hard man to stop, and the scoreline read 17-5 at halftime. Instead of coming out firing after the break, though, Celtic hit a flat patch; dropped ball, missed tackles, men in the wrong place – and a good side would have punished them, but all Rolleston could muster for ten minutes of

Max Stapleton was the man at the end of the line in the next movement to add his name to the scoresheet, and the half-century loomed at 48-8. Celtic’s last try may have been against a shattered defence but was still a cracker. After Masawini had crashed through up the centre around halfway, McCloy took the ball on an inside pass going back across the defensive line, and sliced right through to dot

domination was a penalty to add to their tally. Perhaps there were stern words under the posts, because at that point somebody flicked a big switch. From a quick lineout throw, Nick McKain launched a huge pass out to the centres, the move went back and forth across the paddock until the defence was run ragged, and Kaydis Hona crashed over. Elyh McKibbin was finally getting the range and added the extras, and the green machine was on the charge. Shepherd Mhembere was in minutes later after another big build-up, then Masawini was in again, on the back of some slick passing involving forwards and backs, from a long way out. While the power runners in the middle were creating gaps everywhere, McKibbin and Nixon Brown on the wings were desperate to get in on the action, and Brown was next in, after receiving the ball on the left flank and breaking tackles with speed and power on his way to dotting down under the sticks.

down in front of a raucous crowd of supporters. Celtic lost a bit of focus in the last few minutes and Rolleston actually scored the last try of the match, but the damage was well and truly done. Out at Mayfield, three unanswered first half tries set the tone for Southern and they never looked back against West Melton, winning 50-12. Callum Burrell, Hamish Mackenzie and Matthew McAtamney all dotted down in the first 40 minutes and then turned around in the second half and repeated the dose with doubles to their names alongside, Adam Williamson and Will Mackenzie who also scored. Mackenzie was given the final act of the game, converting his own try to see the half century as the defending champions really hit their straps with the playoffs looming. Methven struck first in their top-of-the-table clash with Southbridge on the other side of the river through Tom Reekie to take the lead, and looked to be control of the match, but being

the champion side that they are Southbridge bounced straight back with two tries of their own. A second for Methven through Manasa Vula levelled things up again, but a late Southbridge try saw them take a seven-point lead into the halftime break. An early home side penalty in the second half extended that lead to 10 points, but Methven bounced right back to remain in contention with an Xavier Bartlett try midway through the half and give themselves a chance of success, but Southbridge scored again and were able to hold off the Methven challenge in the third quarter to get the win. Rakaia were still well in commission in their match just down the road in Springston at halftime too, down by just seven after a Harry Ashworth try in the first half – but that was to be their day as their hosts ran in four unanswered tries in the second half to win comfortably. Rakaia will look to build momentum now for the second stage of the competition with a match against Hornby this week.

Mid Canterbury United enjoy busy day at home Matt Markham A feast of football on the Ashburton Domain on Saturday was almost the perfect day out for Mid Canterbury United football sides on the weekend, with three out of four matches going to home side. Only the Mid Canterbury United seniors ended on the wrong side of the ledger, losing their New World Premiership match to the high-flying Western AFC 1-9 in the day’s main event. After dropping three goals in the first 20 minutes of the match, Mid Canterbury fought back strongly through to almost half-time before a late Western goal extended the lead further. With a never-die attitude though, after the visitors’ fourth, Mid Canterbury bounced back and scored one of their own almost immediately through Nicholas Eden to trail 1-4 at the break.

Five second half goals to Western put the match beyond doubt though as they waltzed away with the match. The Mid Canterbury side will pick themselves up this week and get back to work to prepare for a clash with Halswell United this week, with both sides in similar positions on the overall standings for the season and hunting for another victory. The Mid Canterbury Reserves kept their unbeaten season intact with a 2-1 win over Hornby United next door to the senior match. They’re now six wins from six matches and should extend that to seven this week against Nomads who have just one win next to their name. The Mid Canterbury 17th grade side were in good form on Saturday as well, picking up a 7-2 win over Cashmere Technical in front of a big crowd of home supporters and the Mid Canterbury 15th grade side were also victorious, winning 3-0 in their match against Waimak United. The 13th grade couldn’t quite emulate the club’s other youth sides, losing a tight encounter at Brookside Park in Christchurch against Selwyn, 1-2.

The Mid Canterbury senior women’s hockey side were beaten 1-4 by Rangiora on Saturday.

Tough day out on the turf PHOTO SUPPLIED

Matt Markham With the senior men’s side sitting out the weekend with the bye, all eyes were on the Mid Canterbury senior women’s team in Canterbury Hockey’s Division One competition on Saturday. Up against Rangiora at Rolleston, the side were looking to build on some promising performances in their debut season in the competition thus far against a side similarly placed to them, but were unable to get a win on the board, losing 1-4. The match started well for the Mid Canterbury ladies though, as they struck early. After some good possession and strong play, they worked their way into the circle and found the back of the net with a goal to Sarah Wilson to take the early lead and assume control. They had to relent that control shortly after though, as Rangiora bounced back with-

in two minutes to bring the scores to level heading into the break at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was all Mid Canterbury for the majority as they peppered the Rangiora defence with both attack and shots on goal, but it was for no reward. Then, against the run of play as the end of the first half loomed, Rangiora turned it around and went the length of the turf and didn’t miss, taking the lead for the first time in the match to go up 2-1 at halftime. Two further goals put Rangiora well up heading into the final third of the match, and try as they might, Mid Canterbury were unable to eat back any of the margin on the scoreboard, with the match ending 1-4 to the Rangiora side. The Mid Canterbury ladies will need to pick themselves up quickly this week, with a big clash against the top of the table Marist side looming this Saturday at Nga Puna Wai. The men, who sit near the top of the standings in their competition, will be out for revenge this week as they take on Hornby, who thus far this season are the only side to have beaten them.
