Breast cancer fundraiser is now a cancer survivor Malcolm Hopwood A former Mid Canterbury woman, who topped Pink Ribbon fundraising nationally in 2019, has been diagnosed with breast cancer herself. For three years, Kate Twigg held Pink Ribbon fundraisers for the Breast Cancer Foundation, raising more than $80,000 in Wellington, culminating in $55,000, three years ago. When her mother, Denise Davidson, was diagnosed with breast cancer, Kate knew the most effective way to assist was raising money for the foundation. “I was living elsewhere and this was one way people could help,”
“I burst into tears. It’s been a massive roller coaster. We’re now focused on the path to recovery,” she said. “What I learned is that no-one is immune.” Twigg is thankful with the outcome and believes detection and treatment gives her the best overall chance to survive. Prior to detection, she’d established Twigg and Tonic, an event and fundraising business, which she’s now put on hold temporarily. Instead, she wants to be an advocate for the Breast Cancer Foundation, telling her story through a social media page she’s set up. “Because of the lack of government funding for Pharmac, there are so many vulnerable women left behind,” she said. “When it comes to breast cancer drugs, we’re a third world country.” “There are 15 crucial drugs available in Australia that we

she said. “I was delighted with the response which got bigger each year.” She looked after her own health, regularly having mammograms. The last, in 2020, showed she was clear, but then in October last year she felt a lump in her breast. It had grown to the size of a golf ball. “It was big and it was hard. I knew it wasn’t right,” she said. Twigg, 41, was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer, one of the most aggressive forms of cancer. Before surgery last week, she had to endure 15 rounds of chemotherapy to shrink the size of the tumour. It was extremely tough on Twigg, her husband, Sam, and children. Then, surgery at Wakefield Hospital, followed. To her relief, no cancer cells were detected. “I’ve had a complete pathological response. The tumour had reduced to nothing,” she said.
don’t have here. The government needs to pump $300 to $400 million into Pharmac to meet the need in New Zealand.” Kate Twigg’s message for Mid Canterbury women is to check their breasts monthly or find regular time for self-examination. “Take advantage of mammograms on offer,” she said. “If you catch it early, you may not need chemo or radiation.” Twigg was born in Mid Canterbury, and attended Eiffelton School, Intermediate and Ashburton College, before completing her education in Christchurch. “Mid Canterbury is home and brings back lots of lovely memories,” she said. She acknowledges she’s the inspiration for the Pink Ribbon Breakfast in Methven tomorrow and completely supports the fundraising organised by close friend, Kate Guild, for the Breast Cancer Foundation.

Mayor Brown eyes second term; Wilson bows out Jonathan Leask Neil Brown will run for a second term as Ashburton Mayor because there’s “more work to do’’. The big question will be if he runs unopposed, with local body nominations to officially open on July 15, with the election day itself on October 8. Brown has got in quickly, saying he would be seeking re-election as mayor because there were still things to see through from his first term, which has been a tumultuous one with a shifting political and economic landscape reshaped by a global pandemic and historic floods. “The journey has been enjoyable, but with its challenges of Covid and the May floods to name a couple,” Brown said. “I am going to stand for another three-year term as there is still

work to be accomplished, such as completion of the library and civic building, three waters reform and the second Ashburton urban bridge funding.’’ The majority of the other sitting councillors have confirmed their intention to also seek another term, except for Stuart Wilson. After four terms and 12 years at the council table, Wilson has decided it was time to bow out. Wilson’s fellow Eastern Ward councillor Lynette Lovett has decided to stand for council again but only “after much thought”. Deputy Mayor Liz McMillan would seek re-election in the western ward, along with fellow sitting councillor Rodger Letham. Ashburton Ward councillors Carolyn Cameron and Leen Braam both intend to stand for re-election, while John Falloon, Angus McKay, and Diane Rawlinson have all said they were still undecided about seeking another term. With Wilson’s retirement there will be at least one new face at the council table for the next term and it could likely be a returning face. Former councillor Russell Ellis, who was disqualified from standing at the last election because of a nomination form error, has returned to the district with an eye to getting back on

Historic race intake on the chopping block Jonathan Leask An investigation into the proposed formal closure of the historic Pudding Hill stockwater intake has been approved in what is the first major race facing closure in the district. The Ashburton District Council approved an investigation to determine if there are any signif-
icant impacts that would prevent it from progressing with the closure process. The Pudding Hill intake opened in 1818 as the then Ashburton County Council’s first intake of the stockwater network taking water from the North Branch of the Ashburton River. It is now one of three intakes that is non-compliant, with their resource consents, which expired in 2015, now requiring the installation of fish screens. The council is reluctant to install fish screens due to costs being between $300,000 and

$600,000, as well as operational difficulty and ongoing race rationalisation. The investigation will allow the council to engage with key stakeholders to determine the impacts of a closure and consider any significant issues that will prevent closure. The intake currently supplies a network of around 220km, encompassing 181 rateable properties. It includes 26.2km of main race feeds, 186.3km of local race as well as being the main tributary of the Mt Harding Creek.
Asset manager Andy Guthrie said the creek is primarily supplied by the stockwater scheme and they will need to “engage with ECan and just find out their appetite for returning Mt Harding Creek back to perhaps its natural state which may not be all-year round flow”. The majority of the area serviced by the intake now has alternatives options available including Spaxton Stock Water Limited and Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation Ltd. In his report, Guthrie said that due to the cost of fish screens and
alternative sources being available the “closure of this intake and consequentially the races supplied is considered “low hanging fruit” in terms of council aims to rationalise the network.”

Steaks are indeed high Methven woman ready for MasterChef Lili Haydon
From Methven to MasterChef stardom. That’s the possible storyline for Annie May McDonald, who grew up on a dairy farm in Methven, and is now a finalist in the MasterChef New Zealand reality TV show. The show is where amateur cooks compete in a series of increasingly difficult food challenges to avoid weekly elimination and, eventually, be crowned the winner. McDonald, who now lives in Auckland, will be showing off her cooking skills and knowledge to previous winner and food entrepreneur Nadia Lim, and the rest of New Zealand on national television on TV3 from Sunday night. McDonald is a self-confessed fan of the programme and other cooking shows, which she credits for her love of food, including exotic taste experiences in trips to Asia as a child. “Always loved food, but didn’t want the chef lifestyle, so mum said check out food science,” McDonald said. And it was the best decision of
her life, McDonald said. The 24-year-old works as a product development technologist. “I develop new recipes of muesli.’’ Developing meals to die for will be the focus on the MasterChef show, which McDonald wasn’t originally going to apply for. She thought her lack of experience would count against her, but in the end her family encouraged her to push the submit button. “I was going to wait until I was in my late 20s to enter the show, but my brother said, ‘why don’t you do it now?’,” McDonald said. And so she did and here she is, ready to hit our screens, with her own style to fall back on. “I don’t cook the same food,’’ she said. “Just big bowls of flavours.’’ And after making it on to the show, McDonald had to tell her boss she would have to take leave for the foreseeable future. “I told him I might be away for one week or eight weeks,” she said. His reply? He wouldn’t stop her chasing her cooking dream. Although McDonald can’t say how she fared in the pre-recorded MasterChef series, she’s planning on coming home to do all the cooking for Christmas before moving to Melbourne at the end of the year to further her skills.

Variety Theatre Ashburton brings the Oscars to the stage. V TA company pays homage to West Side Story One of the greatest Hollywood movies of all time that won 10 Academy Awards is West Side Story. Because of its enduring success, Born Free – the Oscar Winners, is paying special tribute to the 1961 movie with a montage of songs and dance sequences from the Leonard Bernstein score. Born Free – the Oscar Winners opens tonight at Ashburton Event Centre. The full ensemble, singers and dancers, with soloists Joe Danielson, Murran Carter-Buller, Matt Williams and Emma Gilkison will present a montage of songs, including Something’s Coming, Maria, Tonight, Somewhere, I Feel Pretty and America in a special arrangement by former Ashburton musician, Roger Buchanan. He was approached earlier this year to score the arrangement for Variety Theatre Ashburton (VTA) and orchestrate the majority of Oscar winning songs the company will present. He spent several hundred hours arranging the songs and dance interludes for specific artists in the line-up. Buchanan also prepared the big screen images from the movies that will visually enhance the Oscar winning numbers. While songs such as Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Unchained Melody, Moon River, My Heart Will Go On, Let It Go and SkyFall, are all enduring chart-toppers, director, Kathi Craig, and choreographer /co-director, Jessie Thomson, wanted the first half to end with a special dedication. West Side Story is one of the
all-time favourite musicals, which has translated to the big screen on two triumphant occasions and Craig and Thomson decided it deserved special treatment. The montage starts with Something’s Coming and Maria, leading into ensemble singing and dancing as the full 26-member company presents Tonight, America, Somewhere, and I Feel Pretty. Other major numbers include the opening Lullaby Of Broadway, Love Is A Many Splendid Thing, Born Free, White Christmas, You Must Love Me from Evita and the pulsating This Is Me from The Greatest Showman, which ends the show. Interspersed are memorable songs, some of which have stayed in the memory much longer than the movies themselves. They include Cheek To Cheek, Some Day My Prince Will Come, As Time Goes By, Up Where We Belong, Can You Feel The Love Tonight and Take My Breath Away from the original Top Gun movie. The line-up of soloists also include outstanding Mid Canterbury singers, Kasey and Libby Higson, Molly Milmine, Leanne Gichard and Chris Woods. The show has never been presented in Ashburton before and Craig and Thomson believe the gtitz and glamour of an Academy Award event makes for an incredible night out. Born Free – the Oscar Winners, presented by Variety Theatre Ashburton, opens tonight at the Ashburton Event Centre and runs for four performances through to Sunday afternoon.

Where’s Freyja? Missing pooch leaves owner distraught Lili Haydon A Mid Canterbury woman says she’s heartbroken after the suspected theft of her beloved therapy support dog. Lyla Arthurs’ dog, Freyja, went missing last Saturday from her property, which is surrounded by farms
Have you seen Freyja, a six-month-old swedish vallhund, who went missing between Leeston and Rakaia? There is a $2000 reward for any information.
in Kings Road between Leeston and Rakaia. Freyja, a six-month-old purebred swedish vallhund, is one of less than a 1000 of that breed in New Zealand. They look similar to german shepherds, but only grow to the size of a corgi. Arthurs thinks that being a distinguished looking pooch may also point to her having been stolen by a passerby after the dog may have got out from under the fence. “I saw her 20 minutes before. She wouldn’t have gotten far,” Arthurs said. Because Freyja was still a puppy, and was still very much attached to her family pack, it was also unlikely she wandered off, according to the dog’s breeder, Her disappearance has left Arthurs upset because Freyja isn’t just a dog to her. “I can’t have kids, so she filled that void for me,” Arthurs said. Arthurs also suffers from immune disorders, including chronic fatigue syndrome and needs Freyja to cope. “I struggle to function with the pain. “She gets me through those hard days,” Arthurs said. The community, along with Ar-
thurs and her partner, have been searching for Freyja ever since and they’ve put up a $2000 reward for any information regarding her whereabouts.
“She has a remote control collar which beeps loudly and we have never heard it go off.” “I know in my gut, she has been taken,” Arthurs said.

REVIEW
Born Free – an Oscar-winning performance
S
implicity in the purest of forms, can often become brilliance. On the musical stage stripping something bare and laying it out for all to witness is a bold step. One that leaves no room for error or fault. But when executed well, it can be breath-taking and enjoyable. And Born Free – the Oscar Winners, Variety Theatre Ashburton’s latest show, which opens tonight, nails that. Forget obtrusively large sets and big-ticket dance and movement numbers, this walk through the movie world’s version of a musical memory lane shines through in its simplicity. It’s about the music and those charged with performing it vocally. Nothing more, nothing less – just the bare essentials. But they’re done exceptionally well. A carefully plotted journey, mapped out by the keen and learned direction team of Kathi Craig, Malcolm Hopwood and Jessie Thomson, Born Free is a musical treat. A show can’t be a show without a few stars, and while all did a wonderful job, a number deserve mention. Matt Williams carries a heavy workload across both acts – Up Where We Belong is delivered perfectly, his tone and range on show for all to see. While excellent as a soloist, when he teams up with others it’s just as good. Unchained Melody with two other Mid Canterbury crooners, Tony Kelly and Chris Woods is a masterfully put together
Born Free - the Oscar Winners, is full of ensemble numbers, many arranged for Variety Theatre Ashburton by former Mid Canterbury musician, Roger Buchanan. The first half ends with a montage of songs from West Side Story performed by the singers and dancers (pictured above). piece with the kind of incredible harmonies we’ve come to expect from three of Mid Canterbury’s best male performers. Woods is again to the fore with Can You Feel The Love Tonight and his combination with Sarah Yeoman in The Prayer is a wonderfully moving duet. Emma Gilkinson brings her experience to the stage with a rousing performance of Somewhere Over The Rainbow and You Must Love Me and Murran Carter-Buller puts all her skill
and finesse on show with a standout effort in Skyfall. Then there’s Libby Higson. Powerfully brilliant. My Heart Will Go On was breath-taking, but her effort in This Is Me in front of a full ensemble for the final number is one of the best songs this reviewer has ever heard on a Mid Canterbury stage in almost two decades. It’s powerful, meaningful and quite simply brilliant and Higson’s work as the lead soloist
should not for one minute ever be understated. That one song is worth the admission price alone. But you expect great things from experienced performers. So, perhaps the most exciting aspect of Born Free was the introduction of some unfamiliar faces to the front of the stage. Younger performers who have underlined that the future of performance in this district is in good hands. Joe Danielson goes from the
tenderness of When You Wish Upon A Star to the challenge of singing while riding a bicycle around stage in Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head with a skill far beyond his years. His combination with Ella Shanks in A Whole New World was a passionate number from both performers. Kasey Higson, much like her sister, is polished and perfection – Someday My Prince Will Come delivered beautifully and Molly Milmine steps up to the challenge of the well-known Let It Go with aplomb. With strong group numbers nestled among the solo performances, everyone gets their chance to shine. The first act is a walk of history, songs you’ll remember and associate with. But if the first act is good, the second act will leave you wanting more. The power of the songs and the performances is incredible and it’s a wonderful feeling to walk out of a show remembering everything that has just unfolded in front of your eyes. If this reviewer can offer one piece of advice to the cast, then it’s to simply believe. The hard work is done and while finding the confidence within oneself inside the final hours before a season opens can be tough, take the knowledge that you have something great, but with a little more self-belief, it can be brilliant. Born Free opens tonight at the Ashburton Event Centre and runs through until Sunday, May 29. Reviewed by Matt Markham

Draft Waste Management & Minimisation Plan 2022 Did you know that in 2020 nearly 4000 tonnes of material was prevented from going to landfill, through recycling and reuse? That’s a great result, but we want to do better.
Have your
Say!
One action we’re proposing is to introduce a kerbside food waste collection for households and offer it as a user-pays service to businesses. Do you agree?
Making sure household food waste doesn’t go to the landfill is our single biggest opportunity to lower our waste volumes and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.
Should we introduce food waste collection?
In other districts, this costs about $50 per household per year or roughly $1 per week. We expect it would be a similar cost here, but we’ll need to investigate further.

Draft Trading in Public Places Bylaw Mobile shops, stalls and trading in public places adds character and vibrancy to our district and can help us to attract visitors, but it needs to be well managed so it doesn’t cause a nuisance for our residents. We have reviewed our bylaw (currently known as the Mobile Shops, Stalls and Hawkers Bylaw), and we are proposing a few changes including adding more permitted sites for trading.

Food scraps a focus in new waste plan Trading in
public spaces under review
A new kerbside collection for household food waste is among key actions in a proposed new Waste Management and Minimisation Plan for the Ashburton district.
A bylaw that regulates mobile shops like food trucks and coffee carts is being refreshed by the Ashburton District Council and will include more spots for people to set up temporary shops, as well as a new name.
A waste audit undertaken in November 2021 identified that approximately 40% of our kerbside rubbish collection is food waste, which is transported to landfill for disposal at significant cost. Although the food waste collection could cost about $50 a household per year, based on the experience of other councils, it would divert food waste from landfill and thereby reduce transport and disposal costs. Also, when food ends up in landfill, it decomposes without oxygen and releases methane, a harmful greenhouse gas. Ashburton District Council Infrastructure Services Group Manager Neil McCann said the food waste collection service could be extended to businesses on a user-pays basis. “Our surveys of rubbish sent to landfill show that there is a large percentage that doesn’t need to go there and could instead be recycled, composted or reused in some way. “Diverting household food waste is the single biggest opportunity to increase diversion rates, decrease greenhouse gases and reduce costs.” Council has this week launched community consultation on the draft new waste plan and people have until 23 June to give feedback. Other key actions of the draft plan include more education, diverting green waste from landfill, extending kerbside recycling
Council is reviewing its Mobile Shops, Stalls and Hawkers Bylaw and proposing to introduce more permitted and discretionary sites around the district.
for businesses, providing a new transfer station in Methven and improving the Ashburton Resource Recovery Park. “In 2020, nearly 4000 tonnes of material was diverted from landfill in our district but we still sent just over 13,000 tonnes to Kate Valley which works out to about 370 kilograms per person. “Our focus in the next six years is to increase the amount we divert and play our part in working towards regional and national plans to manage and minimise waste.” If the community supports a food waste collection, Council will investigate further and report back with more information about how it will operate. This would likely be during consultation on our 2024 Long Term Plan. Mr McCann said feedback from the
community would let Council know it was on the right track and the easiest way was for people to go to the online form at ashburtondc.govt.nz/haveyoursay. ”Managing waste and ensuring good outcomes for the community can be complex. We need to look after the environment, take care of people’s health, and make sure this is done at an acceptable cost to the community. “To achieve these outcomes, we all need to work together.” In the consultation process, people can indicate their support for a kerbside food waste collection service and offer their thoughts on other parts of the proposed action plan. Paper copies of the consultation document will also be available at Council’s office and can be mailed out on request.
It’s also proposed to change its title to the Trading in Public Places Bylaw, which will better reflect the activities it regulates. It was not originally up for review until 2026, but has been brought forward by the need to look at sites near the new library and civic centre. Strategy and Compliance Group Manager Jane Donaldson said that mobile shops and stalls added character to the district and attracted visitors when well-managed, but a bylaw was needed to manage any nuisance factors and maintain public health and safety. “The current bylaw has been working well so it’s mostly unchanged, however we have made some tweaks to ensure it is relevant for today and into the future.” Ms Donaldson said another focus of the review was ensuring the bylaw will not adversely affect existing businesses. The draft bylaw is out for consultation until 23 June. Go to ashburtondc.govt.nz/ haveyoursay.
Neil Brown, Mayor
Adversity can also bring opportunity We will mark two special events in the coming week, both which demonstrate the remarkable ability of the Ashburton district to recover from adversity and prove its economic resilience. On Friday, the ANZ Business of the Year Awards will conclude with a gala evening at the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall in Methven. There, some outstanding businesses will be recognised – outstanding because they have survived covid by using their talent to grow, pivot or recreate themselves in a time that has been universally bleak around the world. All those who entered deserve congratulations and I know the judges had a very difficult time when it came to choosing finalists and then ultimately winners. It is timely to thank all our local 1

businesses for choosing to trade right here in this district. Our communities need you and should be supporting you. The second event marks the one-year anniversary of the May 2021 floods, when we hit the national headlines because of a weather bomb that effectively cut the South Island in two. This time 12 months ago, 540mm was falling out of the sky at Mount Somers, resulting in record flows in the Hinds and Ashburton Rivers and a state of local emergency being declared. Around 1500 people living in Allenton and Netherby were warned they might need to evacuate but the Ashburton River breached upstream and relieved pressure on the river closer to town and this was avoided. Others living much closer to the Ashburton River, and the Hinds, self-
evacuated. Several key roads were closed, KiwiRail halted trains, boil water notices were issued for Methven, Montalto, MethvenSpringfield and Mt Somers; schools closed. Then, on 1 June, a pier of the Ashburton River State Highway 1 bridge slumped and the bridge was closed; traffic was re-routed via the inland route. Suddenly, this was an event that affected everyone in the district and the wider South Island. It is fair to say though that farmers and people living by the rivers were hardest hit where floodwaters escaped and spilled gravel and debris onto farms, and a few houses were flooded. Nearly 280 properties were affected, with uninsurable damage up to $14m. While Civil Defence and the usual helping agencies came together to assist where they could,
individuals also stepped up offering physical and emotional help. This was hugely appreciated. Our Council infrastructure was also damaged and roads in particular took a hammering. While emergency repairs got under way as soon as possible, the work took priority over regular maintenance and that has had a knockon effect. However, out of adversity brings opportunity. Covid and the floods have presented challenges that have tested us but we will look back in time and see that we have performed very well under pressure … after all, that’s how diamonds are made. ashburtondc.govt.nz

Keeping our watermains in good order Ashburton District Council has spent around $2 million in the past 12 months renewing drinking water pipes around the district and one of the latest renewal projects is on the side of a very busy urban road.
PROPOSED ROAD CLOSURE
Pursuant to the Transport (Vehicular Traffic Road Closure) Regulations 1965, notice is hereby given that the Ashburton District Council, for the purpose of allowing Ashburton Event Centre to hold the Ashburton College Ball, proposes to close the following road to ordinary vehicular traffic for the period indicated hereunder.
Hundreds of orange road cones have been separating traffic from diggers and work crews on Moore Street/State Highway 77 as the southern side of the road was dug up and new water mains installed.
Road proposed to be closed:
Another team is replacing water mains on Allens Road. Infrastructure Services Group Manager Neil McCann said traffic management is always very important when working on well-travelled roads, but especially so when work involves open trenches in the road corridor. “We thank those motorists who are reducing their speed in the work zones to keep workers safe and we hope to be finished soon. "Another tricky aspect of works in town is locating and avoiding other services like fibreoptic cables. The contractor has to be very careful.” Water main renewal is programmed every year and pipes for replacement are chosen based on their age and maintenance history. The oldest water pipes in the district are around 80 years old. Mr

replacement was not an exact science but regular renewals reduced the ongoing maintenance burden and the risk of a burst pipe. “We take the same approach with wastewater pipeline renewals and we will have spent about $2.8 million on renewals and relining in the wastewater network at the end of this financial year.” The Moore Street and Allens Road pipe renewals involve installing new polyethylene and PVC pipe, new valves and household tobies (connections). Mr McCann thanked residents for their patience during the work, which

OUR VIEW
Show brings a hint of normality T
here’s always light at the end of the tunnel and after a tumultuous time, perhaps the speck of light that’s looked way off in the distance is growing brighter for the Ashburton Event Centre. Like it has for so many places around Mid Canterbury, Covid has hit one of the jewels in this district’s crown hard. There’s obviously been times where the venue’s manager, Roger Farr has wondered whether it’s the end as countless shows, performances and bookings have had to be cancelled. But like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the resurrection is under way. And tonight, and over the course of the weekend, it can really start to burn bright once again. The event centre’s survival relies solely on bums on seats.
Matt Markham Ticket sales are what drives the venue towards success financially and people flowing through the doors of the world class venue are its bread and butter. But what do you do when you have nothing to put on for people to come and watch? Nothing really, there’s not much you can do. But as New Zealand lifts itself out of the shackles of Covid restrictions and begins to open up the doors once again to people being able to move freely – we’re met with an opportunity as a community to get behind our
local establishments and help them revive. Tonight, Born Free – The Oscar Winners, opens at the event centre. Four shows across the course of the weekend highlighting the incredible array of local talent we have in Mid Canterbury while offering up an evening of entertainment on our own back door – something we’ve missed for the past two years. And Mid Canterbury should be charged with the task of getting behind it. We’re lucky to have a venue like the event centre and in some way or another it’s been a part of our life here in the district since it first opened its doors. It might have been through a show, but it could have also been through a conference,
event, funeral, school ball or just a simple function – we’ve all directly, or indirectly had an involvement. And we don’t want to lose the privilege of having such a space. A lot of work goes in behind the scenes to bring something like a stage show together. Variety Theatre Ashburton are old hands at it, they’ve been doing it in both their current existence and also in their former identity – the Ashburton Operatic Society – since the 60s. But they’ll agree that having the use of the event centre has broadened the capabilities in a way which few would have thought possible when the curtain first opened all those years ago. It allows for cleaner, crisper productions – the technical capabilities within the venue far exceed anything else
within under an hour’s drive of Ashburton. Tonight, the stage opens up again for the first time in a while with a full production of local performers and tireless workers behind the scenes. It’s one of the first steps in getting the Ashburton Event Centre back on track and working towards being a fully-functional and almost self-reliant business within Mid Canterbury. I had the pleasure of heading along to a dress rehearsal on Tuesday night, and walked out of there proud to not only live in a district full of such great performers, but also, of a venue that is so often understated within our own community. Don’t believe me? Go along this weekend and check it out for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.

Ashburton Dahlia Circle
On Tuesday of last week, the Ashburton Dahlia Circle held its 2022 AGM, which was a well-attended and convivial affair, preceded by a shared dinner and lively chat. Special thanks to our gracious hostesses Jackie Ryan and Alison Donald for the lovely meal and venue enjoyed by all. Well done, ladies! After dinner, the official 30th AGM was held, commencing with a warm address from our President, Brian Glassey. Officers for 2022/23 nominated and duly elected, and reports were presented on finances and other matters. This was followed by the presentation of the trophies for the various classes, an event that’s always exciting. So nice to see recipients being rewarded for their efforts throughout the year. Well done to everyone who received a trophy this year! The Circle has grown, with many novice members joining over the last 12 months, which is a wonderful thing, and our senior experienced members have proven themselves wonderful coaches and mentors for our newbies. Attendance at our monthly meetings throughout the season has been very good and our Ashburton Dahlia Circle feels like a family. We’re very fortunate to have some very experienced growers and breeders in our circle who are a font of knowledge and advice for those of us still learning about growing, showing, and breeding our favourite flowers. What a treasure! It was a challenging season for dahlias, with weather conditions through the summer keeping us on our toes, but now that the season has ended, members are busy preparing their dahlias for their winter sleep, and already looking forward to the start of the new season in the spring. If you’d like to join us next summer to learn more about growing and showing dahlias, please reach out to us through our Facebook page, and we’ll be in touch with more information. Or, come chat to us at our fundraising stall at the Ashburton Farmers Market on Labour Weekend. See you there! Ashburton Electronic Organ And Keyboard Club
We were welcomed into our last Club night by Lorraine, playing the piano. Lorraine never ceases to amaze me how she can play nonstop for 30 minutes with not a sheet of music in sight, only a list of song titles in front of her. After a welcome to everyone by President Bev, the evening was handed over to our organiser for the night, Janet. First to play was Michael. Michael played the organ, and his choice of songs were “It is no Secret”, “The Old Piano Roll Blues”, “Pretty Baby”, “You Made Me Love You” and lastly “La Paloma”. Lovely to hear the organ being played. Alan was next up playing his electric piano. “Sprig of Lilac”, “Wayside Chapel”, “Pokarekare Ana”, “Just a Closer Walk With Thee” and “Maggie” were Alan’s chosen tunes – some old favourites there. The always popular Skiffle Group was next. They played and sang “Okie from Muskogee”, “Going Back to Where I Came From”, Walking in the Sunshine”, “Underneath the Arches” and “Maybe it’s Because I’m a Londoner”, followed by “Round and Round”, Blacksmith Blues” and “Silver Wings”. Next up was Barbara’s Band playing “Rhythm of the Rain”, “Rags to Riches”, ”You’re the Cream in my Coffee”, and “Cherry Pink and Apple

Final bracket was “Dear Hearts and Gentle People”, Heart of my Heart”, “Somebody Loves You”, “One Dozen Roses” and “Goodnight, Sweetheart”. Last up, but not least was Bernard playing keyboard. Bernard’s choices were “Cottage by the Lea”, “Forty Shades of Green” and “Lace Covered Window”. Once again, a lovely evening of great music to listen to, to sing along with or just toe tap to. Thanks to all who entertained us. Next club night is Monday June 20. Play in starts 7.00pm. All welcome, Non-members $2.00.
Ashburton Golf Club
The great weather keeps turning up on Saturdays, and the golfers just love it. Another crowd of over a hundred played the course. All eyes were on the Watson cup and Newton trophy semi-finals, four great games were played and we are now left with two very competitive Finals to be played this Saturday. In the main event Steve McCloy and Stephen Lee will face Chris Lovelock and Greg Fleming. I think the handicaps are very similar, Steve and Chris will equal each other out, and it will come down to which of the higher handicappers has a good day. The two Steves have cruised through the rounds so far, whereas Chris and Greg have had to battle most weeks. Which is the best prep for a final? Too close to call. The Newton Final, however, is certainly a one-sided affair. How the two Pats are there is anyones guess, but they are certainly out of their depth. Both handicaps have been sliced and diced. I reckon Ivan and Muzza have only got to turn up and claim the title. Still, I suppose we had better go through the formalities of playing. The biggest shock of the final is that there were two pairs of pups in the semis, but neither got through. Rumour has it that Jordy only had to two-putt the 18th to extend the game, but the anchored long putter let him down. Ah well! We have two great finals in store, good luck to everyone. Top score of the stableford round was Matt Tait with a superb gross 79 for 42 points, well done Young Spud. Two wonderful rounds of note by our elite golfers. Hamish chucked in 4 birdies and an eagle followed it with 3 doubles and 4 bogeys to finish a rollercoaster round with 34 points, but beating that effort was the Hopster, who snaffled himself 5 birdies then followed it up with a 4 putt from a metre and an air swing, but still came in with 36 points. If you see the boys, you can ask them about their textbook games. This Sunday we have another round of pennants, most of our teams are sitting out or have byes, but the Patterson grades are playing at Tinwald. Dylan and the pups will be trying to con-
solidate themselves in the top four when they take on Geraldine, but the old dogs are in disarray. Talks of mutiny, and bad blood. Someone even suggested we should try more practise and less drinking; have you ever heard such a thing? I am sure this week will be the start of the revival. We will discuss tactics in Kelly’s on Friday evening over a Guinness or two. All results next week. Good golfing.

President Roger Paterson opened by welcoming all to the meeting, at which we were joined by District Governor Christine Stewart and guest speaker Jessie Chan, Chair of RuralCo. Although covid precautions meant that this was the first tea meeting in three months there was a reasonably good turnout. The meeting began with a tribute to Lion Peter Gibson, who passed away on March 5 of this year. Garth Bateup spoke of Peter’s long and distinguished service from his induction in 1982, including his tenures as Club President and Secretary, and his Lloyd Morgan Life Membership award. Business for this month included a proposal for the Club to offer to host the 2024 District Conference, which was approved by the members present. Outgoing President Roger Paterson is to head up an organising committee. Incoming President Manny Sim’s proposed Board was also approved. This month’s three-minute speaker was Mike Wells who gave members a potted self-history of his childhood passion for aviation, when he worked to earn flying tuition time with his father, a professional helicopter pilot. He explained “It turns out that flying through a storm in the middle of the night in a helicopter with the side open is quite exciting for a ten year old.” Mike set up a tech business building websites, then a new thing, straight out of university and ended up designing New Zealand’s first online hotel booking system. The guest speaker this month was Jessie Chan who is currently serving as Chair for
RuralCo. She told us about the lessons she learned from the hardships faced by her mother, who immigrated to New Zealand from China as an orphan. After her mother left the young Jessie was raised by her father Victor Sorenson, who taught her values and ethics and showed her by example how to lead people. Jessie spoke of the importance of understanding your own motivations and grabbing hold of each day, and about getting the best out of people by encouraging them to build on their strengths but also helping lift them out of their weaknesses. Christine Stewart was pleased to make a number of long service chevron awards, including a fifty year service chevron to Michael Hanham.
Ashburton Pakeke Lions
President Lion Robert Spencer extended a warm welcome to Members and Visitors to the May meeting of Pakeke Lions. Apologies were read by Lion Dave Bennett and the Social Ladies were welcomed. Incoming President Lion Jim Young read the names of his incoming 2022/23 Board Appointments and their duties for the forthcoming year. Lion Malcolm McCormick reported on forthcoming Social Events. Lion John Lynch introduced Bernard Egan the speaker for the evening. Bernard spoke of his career as a Celebrant and all the amazing people he has met over the years. Bernard is also a contributor to the local Ashburton Guardian newspaper, writing articles on Motoring History, and has written about a large variety of motor vehicles. He also holds another very important position, being the Big Red Man in the Arcade at Christmas time. Bernard also entertained all present with his entertaining stories and jokes and was presented with a Certificate of thanks by Lion Milner Jacob. Dave Bennett reported on the Charitable Trust and next month’s Changeover meeting. Joe Butchard outlined duties for members for this week’s Annual Charity Market to be held in the RX Plastics Building

on West Street on 28th & 29th May. Raffles were drawn and tailtwisters Bob & Judy extracted fines from members for misdemeanors recently incurred. Robert thanked all those present and wished Jim Young all the Best for his term as President. The National Anthem concluded an entertaining evening.

President Merv welcomed 49 members to the May meeting and accepted 16 apologies. The members then stood for a moments silence in remembrance of the passing of Bruce McLauchlan. President Merv mentioned a proposed trip to Ellesmere later in the year. Our mini speaker was Neill Skirten, Christchurch born, attended Heathcote Primary then moved to Waimate for primary and secondary school. Left school as an apprentice mechanic, then joined Forest Service at Tapanui in their workshop. Neill then moved on to Hokitika then transferred to Palmerston North with the Forest Service. In 1976 applied for MOW job in Wellington servicing buildings including Parliament House. Neill was seconded to Tonga for 3 years, mechanical maintenance 1981 back to NZ as Manager of MOW Christchurch, spent 4 weeks in Antarctica In 1988 the workshops closed down. Neill bought a small property at Rakaia, then learned he had been successful in getting a job for three years in Bangladesh then time in Papua New Guinea before returning in 1995 and eventually selling Rakaia property and moving to Ashburton. Neill and his wife had four children. The main speaker was Kevin Clifford from Safer Mid Canterbury, formerly the Ashburton Safer Community Council, and he spoke to us about the roll they play in our community. Safer Mid Canterbury is a non-profit community organisation that has been operating as a charitable trust for more than 20 years, employing 32 people. They provide free and confidential community services for the Ashburton district, such as supporting vulnerable families, children, new migrants and youth justice and adult offenders. Along with delivering crime prevention projects, they prioritise the delivery of early intervention programmes, to support and strengthen individuals and families. They help people to make good choices, providing positive opportunities and pathways for change. Safer Mid Canterbury employ a wide range of staff across many different programme areas. They also have a team of dedicated volunteers supporting these programmes, alongside extensive community support, and engagement with other agencies and providers across the district. Safer Mid Canterbury is the largest locally-driven provider of community services in the Ashburton District. Ken Borland then passed a vote of thanks. The meeting was closed with the singing of the National Anthem

Cranbourne out to rock them in Auckland Cup Matt Markham The rise and rise of Mid Canterbury open class pacer, Cranbourne, will take another step forward tomorrow night when the big pacer with the even bigger ticker steps out in the Group One Auckland Cup at Alexandra Park. And while the son of Sir Lincoln might be seen as a side serving beside two of the stars of the open class pacing ranks in Self Assured and Spankem, the man charged with having him ready to rock and roll in one of New Zealand’s biggest pacing events thinks otherwise. In fact, such is the confidence emanating from the base of Andrew and Lyn Neal where the horse has been staying during his northern sojourn, trainer Brent White is quietly confident his horse can give the big bangers a run for their money. “Tim (White’s son) has been up with him this week, and he rang me after his fast work run and said he couldn’t be happier with him, and that it’s the best he’s ever worked,” White said. “I don’t think we ever imagined
“
Ross McCutcheon, Neale Pierce, Barry Phillips and their co-owner Ross Smith will be hoping for smiles after tomorrow night’s Auckland Cup with their star pacer, Cranbourne. PHOTO SUPPLIED how much benefit he would take out of this trip up north, but everything with him at the moment seems right where we want it to be. “He’s there and ready to race this week and he’ll make them earn it, I’m sure of that.” An $11 chance with bookmakers to take out the $400,000 event, Cranbourne will need to get it all right at the start, where he’ll begin off the unruly – wedged in between two other runners.
He’s there and ready to race this week, and he’ll make them earn it
“I thought the unruly was a great spot for him, but I wasn’t so happy when I saw him in between two others out there. “But he’ll get his chance to step away with them, I just hope it’s a fair start and everyone gets afforded the same opportunity to get away on the right foot.” Matty Williamson has struck up a strong association with the pacer, and will travel north to drive him tomorrow night in a star-studded field of pacers, multiple Group One winners and some of the best pacing stock in the land. “It’s a good field, but we haven’t had a lot of luck up there – but

he’s been running huge races. “The two miles should suit him right down to the ground, you’d think, and he’s going to make his presence felt if we can get the start right.” The Auckland Cup is just one of a number of features on the night, with the time-honoured Rowe Cup for the trotters also set to be raced and won. Champion trotter, Sundees Son will be looking to win his third edition of the great race. Local connections will also be out to chase Group One glory earlier in the night. Highgrove goes around in the Northern Trotting Derby for the Robert and Jenna Dunn stable at a short quote for his owners, Alan and Ian Neumann, Vinnie Neumann, Emma Hintz and Brent Clarke.

Promotion and relegation matches loom in local netball Matt Markham With promotion and relegation matches lying in wait next week, the pressure is still firmly on a number of sides heading into the end of the first round in Mid Canterbury’s Premier Netball competition tonight. While the situations have settled down to just a few sides battling it out for either top or bottom spot in the respective three grades there’s nothing to lose, but
At a glance Premier 1: 6:15pm –
Hampstead A v Methven A. 7:15pm – Celtic A v Southern. 8:15pm: Ashburton College A v United A. Premier 2: 6:15pm - Methven B v Celtic B. 7:15pm – Allenton A v Hampstead B. 8:15pm – Mt Somers A v Ashburton College B. Premier 3: 6:15pm – Ashburton College 10A v United B. 7:15pm – Hampstead U18 v Methven Humm, 8:15pm – Methven Shearmac v Rakaia.
everything to gain for every team in the approach to the end of the first third of the season. Mid Canterbury Netball will hold both promotion and relegation matches next Tuesday night at the EA Networks Centre, where teams will be sorted for the middle round of the campaign before play resumes on Thursday night. In Premier 1, there’s a little room for movement on the ladder, which could make things interesting. A lot of it hinges on the final match of the night between Ashburton College A and United A, in which the bottom-placed side will be found. If College A can pull off the upset and knock over United then they might be able to lift themselves off the bottom of the standings and push Southern to the bottom spot, where they’d face potential relegation. Southern face a tough task themselves in the unbeaten Celtic side, who should end the round as Premier 1 winners, but if there’s a slip-up then Hampstead who were beaten by Celtic last week will be ready to push their case to reclaim the top spot. They take on Methven in the first game of the night, smarting from only their second loss in the past two years which they’ll be keen to bounce back from. The real action may come from the two lower grades tonight. Although, Premier 2 looks relatively clear-cut, with the competition’s top side Mt Somers A
Ashburton College A could cause the biggest upset of tonight’s play if they can topple United to lift themselves off the bottom of the standings. taking on the bottom placed Ashburton College B in the late game of the round. On form alone, Mt Somers would have to seriously fall over to lose the match, meaning they’ll get a shot at a promotion next Tuesday night, while College B would seem resigned to having to play the winner of Premier 3 on the same night as the bottom-ranked side. Celtic B and Allenton A lead the chase behind Mt Somers and both get good opportunities to gain momentum heading into the second round with clashes tonight. Celtic B take on Methven B in the opening game of the night,
while newcomers Allenton A, who have shown plenty of promise through the opening four weeks will take on Hampstead B as they look to continue to improve in their return to Premier netball. In Premier 3 all eyes will be on the last game of the night as Methven Shearmac look to do what no one else has been capable of doing – beating Rakaia. In their return to Premier netball, the Rakaia side have swept all before them scoring 205 goals across their four matches while conceding just 62. Methven Shearmac sit three points behind them on the standings though, so if there’s to be an
upset on the standings heading into the evening’s play – this match might be the one that provides it. Ashburton College 10A sit third on the standings, but can’t actually get ahead of Rakaia or even Methven dependent on that game’s result. College play United B in the opening game of the night with United still chasing their first success of the season against a side who have only been bettered by Rakaia. The middle match of the night sees Hampstead U18 and Methven Humm, who both sit middle of the standings on the same points, battling it out.
First round of hockey silverware handed out Matt Markham Just a few weeks into the 2022 Mid Canterbury Hockey season and already some silverware has made its way into the trophy cabinets for the remainder of the season. The first round of the season has been completed over the past week, with three games making up the respective competitions before teams regroup and return again this week to start a nine-
week round robin to determine the next set of winners for the season. In Division One women’s action, the Doig Cup for the first round has been claimed by Methven, who were untouchable during the round winning all three matches. They tidied things up with a 3-0 victory over Tinwald to win the title on Monday night, while the battle of Wakanui in the other match went to Wakanui Black, who were victorious in a hardfought match against Wakanui White, 5-4. The four sides will now branch off to compete for the Judy Ren-
nie Tray, with Methven the side with the target on their backs. In Men’s Division One it’s been an all Wakanui affair so far, with Wakanui Black claiming the CD Wilson Cup with three wins from their three matches. They finished the first stage of the season with a strong 5-1 win over Tinwald on Tuesday night while clubmates, Wakanui White, took second spot on the standings with a 7-4 victory over Allenton. The Division One men will now tackle the nine rounds of the Bowman Cup. In Division Two women’s play it’s been a little closer.
No side picked up three wins from their three matches, but Tinwald claimed two wins and a draw to pick up the AWHA Competition Cup. They finished with a 4-0 win over Wakanui last Friday night to take the win while Methven, who finished just two points behind them with a win and two draws downed Hampstead in the final round. The Division Two women’s competition will now enter nine weeks of play to find the winner of the Watson Shield. In Men’s Division Two it’s also been a close-run race. Hampstead Lowcliffe picked
up the J. Hunt Memorial Trophy with two wins and a draw, but had to fight hard in the final round on Sunday, winning a high-scoring match 5-3 over Allenton. Wakanui picked up second place thanks to a win and two draws, including a 4-0 win over Tinwald on the weekend. They’ll now head into the Hyde Trophy for the next stage of the season. Play resumes again with the Women’s Division Two action on Friday night for the first round of the new competitions, before taking a break for Queen’s Birthday weekend, next week.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You want the goodness you felt before. But for some reason, you can’t get there in the same way. Don’t worry. Just try something else. There are hundreds of routes to the same feeling. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Consult others before you initiate action. Even when you have enough information to respond, it will benefit you to hold back until the right moment – the moment you can take control of the situation. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Because you know someone well, you don’t have to try hard to understand. You hear when they say everything, and when they say nothing, meanings are deliberately implied. You get every one. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): In these early days of a project, the endeavour is wholly unproven. Either give yourself margins of error that are so wide, they may as well be the page itself or put up the equivalent of bumpers in a bowling lane. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You express yourself hoping that others will unanimously support your truth. But the good effects of your honesty happen regardless of their reaction due to the gravity-defying effects of truth-telling. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Beware of those who give their opinion like it’s gold, like it’s enriching to all on whom it is bestowed and essential to the economy. The ones to watch are busy living the principle to stop and hand out all the “gold.” LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): What makes humble work so satisfying is its completion. It’s easy to tell when the floor is swept or the window is spotless. You’ll deal in complex and difficult work. Make luck by emptying the trash. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Having preferences can be costly. Needing things to be a certain way can mean a fight for what you want – or just having to wait, save, trade, negotiate, work for it. What if you wanted less? SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Life feels like a maze, but at least it’s a maze you get to set up for yourself. Arrange it so it’s easy to move through. What you can you do to make your environment conducive to moving forward? CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You’ll be tapped by the challenge. There is never a comfortable time to stretch because stretching is, by definition, a discomfort, though one that you could learn to crave. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): A golf club could have multiple purposes. It could be used as a weapon, rhythm instrument, etc. But of course, it is best suited to playing golf. Apt applications give tools their highest value. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Just because you can’t do a thing perfectly doesn’t mean you can’t do it at all. Being willing to get a little messy in the process will be key to your overall success.

ASHBURTON TIMARU OAMARU
It’s important to us to support our communities. Below are some of the ways we show we care. Community BBQ We enjoy helping our community raise funds, so we have a covered BBQ at each of our stores which can be booked by non-profit groups such as sports teams etc. on a weekend day to raise funds for their group or charity. We offer fifty free sausages to get them started.
Christmas Toy Donations
We provide free Fluro vests to schools to keep our youth safe and visible when on school trips or waiting for the bus.
Gardening in Schools
Christmas is about giving and each Christmas we donate over $10,000 of toys to local charities in Ashburton, Timaru & Oamaru as a way of thanking our community who supports us so well.
We started our Mitre 10 MEGA Gardening in Schools program two years ago in Ashburton and because of the success of this program we will be introducing this to both Timaru & Oamaru primary schools as soon as we can.
The Lye Foundation
Helping Hands
The Lye foundation is proud to support youth in our local schools in the Ashburton, Timaru & Oamaru areas. We work with schools to ensure children don't go without items that other children may take for granted when going to school e.g. school shoes, warm jackets, school books etc.
Together we are a stronger community and when we hear of a community project that we are able to help with, be it big or small, we do our best as a team to help out where possible.
Mitre 10 MEGA BBQ Trailer Hire
Mitre 10 MEGA Marquee
We have a BBQ trailer at each of our three stores for the community groups to use for local community events.
