Fingers crossed, Taylor’s fixed Daryl Holden
Resilient Ashburton teenager Taylor Doyle and her mother say they “couldn’t have wished’’ for better results after what could be a life-changing operation in Germany. Doyle, 14, is in recovery mode after another – and hopefully final operation – for her debilitating vascular condition called median acute ligament syndrome (MALS), which has made her life a misery for too long. Her mother Zalie Doyle captured the joy on her daughter’s face with a touching photo from her hospital bed.
isn’t dizzy “ She and hasn’t
passed out. Couldn’t have wished for better results so soon after her op!
“This face says it all,’’ Doyle said on Getting on Taylor’s Nerves Facebook page. “Being able to eat without debilitating pain is worth smiling for!’’ Doyle went on to say that her girl would remain in hospital until about June 6. “And then (she) has to stay on the ground for a while longer before flying home for safety but, all going to plan, she won’t need any further treatment. Early post-operation signs were encouraging.
“Pain when eating is gone, still battling a bit of nausea, but that should settle,’’ she said. “She isn’t dizzy and hasn’t passed out. Couldn’t have wished for better results so soon after her op!’’ Surgery was needed after diagnostic testing confirmed the original MALS diagnosis, which saw Doyle undergo an operation in Sydney in April. But further scans in Germany also detected seven compressed arteries and not just the one, which could have been life threatening. Doyle said they were grateful at being able to “bring our girl to world leaders in the diagnostics and treatment of vascular compression syndromes’’. “… we’re confident we’re in the very best place to give Taylor the best chance at having a quality of life she deserves.’’ Taylor hasn’t had any real quality of life because of MALS, which results in tissue in the chest area compressing the artery that supplies blood to the organs in the upper abdomen. It made eating, drinking, and sometimes breathing painfully difficult for Doyle, who suffered worrying weight loss because the pain and nausea symptoms worsened when she ate and drank. Little successes along her medical journey have continued to be celebrated. That included being able to stand and walk for the first time after surgery last week. “… and the best part was she didn’t feel the overwhelming dizziness, fainting or vision loss she’s lived with for so long!,’’ Doyle wrote. “I’m sure there will be more ups and downs to come, but today we celebrate her ups. I’m so proud of this resilient girl, she really is a true fighter.’’

Moving Day brings new life and blood to Mid Canterbury Malcolm Hopwood Moving Day is a barometer that predicts the health of our regional economy, believes Tim Silva, partner in the Ashburton legal firm, RMF Silva. May 31, the traditional farm settlement day, is also one of two busiest days for legal firms throughout Mid Canterbury. The second is June 1, the following day. Silva describes it as progression day from farm manager to contract milker to share milker and ultimately farm owner. “It brings new life and new blood into the farming community and our economy,” said partner, Chris Robertson. “It’s the day when clients take that step up the dairying ladder.” RMF Silva is one of several legal firms handling the financial settlements and contractual arrangement for clients. It’s believed about 50 rural transactions take place today in and around Mid Canterbury.
RMF Silva partners, Chris Robertson (left) and Tim Silva. Robertson confirms there’s a significant rise in transactions from last year. He identifies the steadiness of
Fonterra’s payment, a lift in the value of property, strong demand for land and farmers looking to exit the industry with new ones mov-
ing in as reasons for the increase. “There’s confidence in the dairy sector at the moment,“ Silva said. The partners explained the two
days (May 31/June 1) are a culmination of six months of people listing properties and finalising agreements. “These last two days are the pointy end of the stick,” Robertson said. “It puts a lot of pressure on ourselves and our staff.” They both agree it’s a highly collaborative time for the industry. “Banks start super early to advance money and the transactions involve a range of people from irrigators to accountants and farm advisers.” There’s also valuable collaboration between lawyers representing clients. “There’s still collegiality between firms. It’s the Mid Canterbury way,” Robertson said. While they couldn’t quantify the economic value of transactions, they said it’s huge in Mid Canterbury. “Dairying is to Mid Canterbury like the University of Otago is to Dunedin,” Robertson said. When the two days are over, RMF Silva enters into their “quieter time”. “There’s a great feeling of satisfaction when it’s over because we know we’ve helped people,” Silva added.
Counterspin: Putting their spin on the news Daniel Alvey An Ashburton man connected with alternative theory-spreading media organisation Counterspin doesn’t expect any public
backlash from their visit today. Local organiser Perry Smith said the visit and speeches at the Sinclair Community Centre from 6.30pm today was all about “giving people an opportunity to have their say”. Smith said the Ashburton stopover was part of their “Let’s Not Forget Tour” in a reference to their anti-mandate protests that included the Parliament grounds
occupation in February, which ended with arrests and nasty scenes as police forced protestors out. Counterspin Media is an online news show that has presented itself as an alternative to the mainstream news and information. But Counterspin haven’t just documented concerns and protests. protesters and they’ve been touring New Zealand in a bus, stopping at many towns across the country since Anzac Day. Counterspin Media leaders Kelvyn Alp, who was involved in mobilising people to the protests in Wellington, and Hannah Spierer are heading the trip. The focus of the talks in Ashburton was about providing people the opportunity to talk about
adverse effects they have suffered since taking the Covid-19 vaccine, the Three Waters national reform and mycoplasma bovis, the cattle disease. “There is a wide variety of speakers, but there is an opportunity for everyone,’’ Smith said. “There is hopefully going to be talks about M. bovis and how it was rolled out with destroying herds.’’

Sock-maker wins supreme award
An Ashburton business that has turned sock-making into a science was crowned supreme winner at the Ashburton District ANZ Business of the Year Awards. NZ Sock Company, established by the Sparrow family in 1980 after they took over a local hosiery manufacturer, also won the technology and innovation award. Their history of making socks spans across three generations. Eight category winners were also announced at the awards’ formal gala dinner, held at Methven’s Mt Hutt Memorial Hall. Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown chose the supreme winner and said most people in the district likely had a pair of NZ Sock Company socks. “It’s a privilege to give this award to such an outstanding and locally-grown family business. Your socks have been worn by winners on the sports field, in the boardroom, and by armies on the march,” Brown said. “You have shown that sock-making is a real science and one that can happen in our own town.” The inaugural awards attracted 70 entries, which went before a judging panel last year. “The awards have shown just how innovative and world-leading some of the businesses in this district are,” Fabish said. “It was our first time running
the awards and we’ll consider all the feedback we have gathered along the way and look at how we might improve them for when we next run this event.”

Mayor confident second bridge will get go ahead Jonathan Leask Ashburton’s Mayor is confident the town’s proposed second Ashburton River Bridge will find favour with the Government, but “there is no guarantee”. Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown met with Finance Minister Grant Robertson at a post-budget event in Timaru last week where he was told the bridge was in the budget. “He said ‘your second bridge is in the budget’ when I asked him about the billion dollar infrastructure spend,” Brown said. With the treasury forecasting $61.9 billion of infrastructure investment over the next five years, Brown said that Robertson’s as-

surance the bridge is in the Government’s budget plans was good news, it isn’t a guarantee. Brown hopes a concrete com-
mitment to the project will hopefully come later this year. The Ashburton District Council is in the process of finalising the
third stage of the business case, a detailed design including costs, which will be presented to the council at the start of August. “Once that has been approved by council, I’ll head off to Wellington with it to present it to the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister to see where we stand.” The case for the bridge is clear, it’s one of connectivity and resilience for not just the town but the entire South Island, Brown said. What is up for discussion is how the bridge will be funded. The new bridge has been estimated to cost around $40m and the council has budgeted 20 per cent, around $8m, in its longterm plan as its contribution to the project and will hope to secure the remainder from the Government. As the Chalmers Avenue site is not a State Highway, Waka Kotahi
NZ Transport Agency would normally only fund up to 51 per cent of the project, leaving 29 per cent of the estimated cost to be determined. Brown hopes that the business case will convince the government to meet that shortfall and said he will be pushing for the project to start as soon as possible. In all likelihood it will be included in Waka Kotahi’s next three-year work plan – the National Land Transport Programme, starting in 2024.

Keeping our young ’uns warm Daniel Alvey We need more coats and pyjamas for Ashburton kids in need. That’s the plea from Jenny Rae,
who is coordinating a Coats for Kids appeal and Pyjama Drive on behalf of Ashburton’s Base Youth Centre. Base is a charitable trust set up to provide free development and health services, and a safe environment for 10 to 16-yearolds in Ashburton. Keeping Ashburton youngsters warm this winter is an an-
nual focus, with Rae explaining that the winter coats and PJs programme could not be successful without more donations. “Normally all our containers a chocka (with coats and pyjamas) but we’re few short this year,” Rae said. Each year the programme gives away about 200 coats, while 2021 was the first time
they had also given away pyjamas. Rae said she was surprised how many pyjamas she got, which is why the PJ drive has returned this year. “(But) we need a lot more donations, particularly (for) boys,” Rae said. Rae would also welcome people handing in clothing that
their kids may have grown out of and no longer need. But it’s winter coats and pyjamas that are top of mind, especially as the weather starts to cool. People could drop off clothing at the Base Youth Centre on Burnett Street, Ashburton New World, and Community House Mid Canterbury on Cass Street.
Select committee will discuss meningitis petition Malcolm Hopwood The Meningitis Foundation’s petition, fronted by Ashburton couple, Claire and Gerard Rusht-
on, will be discussed by the government’s health select committee, as early as this week. Gerard Rushton has been informed the petition, which collected 6357 signatures, is on the select committee’s agenda for Thursday, June 2. The Rushtons have asked to make an oral submission and hope to receive confirmation of
a date after the June 2 meeting. They believe they have better than a 90 per cent chance of presenting their case, which calls for vaccination against all types of meningococcal disease to be freely available to young people. “The speed of getting things done in parliament is normal,” he said. “We understand the wheels turn slowly.”

The Rushtons have received a reply to a series of questions they asked Minister of Health, Andrew Little. Gerard Rushton said Little has acknowledged their letter and is consulting with his department before making a reply. In their letter they sought answers to why 16,000 meningitis vaccinations were binned with-
out use and requested the foundation be involved in the further delivery of meningitis doses. The Rushtons lost a daughter, Courtenay, to meningitis in 2014 and, since then, have campaigned for complete vaccination for young people. “The only way we can achieve our goal is by keeping things moving,” they said.

with Pat Deavoll
One year on; look where we are … By Pat Deavoll One year ago, Mid Canterbury hit the national headlines due to a weather bomb that effectively cut the South Island in two. Five hundred and forty millimetres of rain fell out of the sky at Mount Somers, resulting in record flows in the Hinds and Ashburton Rivers, and a state of local emergency was declared. Hundreds of farmers were affected by the resulting flood, with silt and sediment spreading across their properties ruining pasture, damaging fences and destroying irrigation ponds. Bryan Beeston’s dairy farm backs onto the North Branch of the Ashburton River. On the day of the flood, the river breached a stock bank and ran through the farm, washing away fences, and flooding houses and sheds. It also washed away 200 of his dairy cows. Beeston said a creek that ran through his property was full of shingle so even when the rain stopped the water had nowhere to go. A year later and it is hard to imagine the property had been so decimated. New fencing and a few small spots of shingle are the only evidence. Beeston had diggers scrape the shingle off the land at a cost of $480,000. Despite having to bring in a lot of feed in the interim, the land recovered and now is back to normal, Beeston said. If anything, it is a better farm, he said. Chris Allen’s arable farm suffered massive damage, losing 22 fences, paddocks covered in sediment, trees, and debris, a huge washout down the middle of the farm, and

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Chris Allen: The Government offered $4m in response to the flood damage. PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN all but losing his irrigation pond. “We had to get the pond fixed before the irrigation season and thank goodness this happened by December 1,” Allen said. “But we took out 15,000 tonnes of debris that had been deposited on the pond and spread this over
five hectares of our land. It was nearly three-quarters of a metre deep in the pond. It was a threeweek job involving three dump trucks and a digger. “Then we had to repair all the infrastructure around the pond. Allen said there was a “huge
amount” of debris spread across the farm that had to be got rid of. He credits volunteers for all the work they did to remedy this. Ashburton farmer David Clark said that although his farm borders the river, he had no damage. But a lot of his neighbours did. Clark at the time was the Federated Farmers (Feds) Provincial President and was involved in the Feds’ response. “Because I’d had no damage it gave me a chance to help in any capacity I could,” he said. “The number of farmers affected ran into the hundreds – it was huge. The main damage was shingle, especially on those farms close to the river. In the high country, it
was tracks and fences. “The response went really, really well,” Clark said. “There was huge community involvement. The Farmy Army, tramping clubs, Lincoln College students, and the Lions Club all came out to help with the cleanup.” At the time of the flood Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern came down and there was $4m offered and this was all administered by MPI, Allen said. MPI set the criteria as to what they would fund and these had to be uninsurable (not uninsured) which is “pretty much things around the land to restore it back to its productive best,” he said. Clark said the funding went really smoothly in the end although the criteria were tight. “Normally Central Government doesn’t get involved in the repair of this sort of event. But it gave a 50 per cent contribution towards the removal of shingle. It ended up a good process.” Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown said, “It is fair to say that farmers and people living by the rivers were hardest hit where floodwaters escaped and spilled gravel and debris onto farms, and a few houses were flooded. “However, out of adversity brings opportunity. Covid and the floods have presented challenges that have tested us, but we will look back in time and see that we have performed very well under pressure … after all, that’s how diamonds are made.”

NZ Young Farmers launches new partnership funding model Pat Deavoll New Zealand Young Farmers (NZYF) is launching a new funding model, the NZYF Community, to help the organisation become more financially sustainable. The new NZYF Community is a modern partnership funding-based model, aimed to ensure the organisation will be kept around for generations to come. Across its networks, NZYF has over 60 clubs, hosts around 800 club meetings and 150 events every year. It is also responsible for the FMG Young Farmer of the Year contest series. NZYF board chair Kent Weir said the new funding model would transform the way the organisation works and create more avenues to better support young people in the sector. As a non-profit organisation, it previously relied on project and outcome-based funding to support its 3500 memberships across all of its networks. “New Zealand Young Farmers has a proud history since its establishment in 1927 and we want to make sure that we can continue to provide help to Young Farmers and rural communities,”
New Zealand Young Farmers has been instrumental in adding to the vibrancy of our rural communities for nearly 100 years. PHOTO SUPPLIED he said. “Our purpose is to excite, connect and nurture young people in the primary sectors and create success for our members and clubs. “We support our members with their mental and physical health and connect clubs with rural communities to help them thrive with fundraising opportunities and events.
“Our goal is to always keep developing, inspiring, and empowering young people to achieve their dreams and ambitions.” The NZYF community operates in a three-tiered model with the choice to become a ‘family member,’ ‘supporter,’ or ‘friend of NZYF’. munities for nearly 100 years,” said Steve Penno, MPI’s director of investment programmes. “This new funding model will help ensure their important work continues for many years to come.” Weir said he would also like to thank the NZYF National Office who worked tirelessly to get the funding model off the ground, spearheaded by NZYF chief executive Lynda Coppersmith. Coppersmith reiterated New Zealand Young Farmers’ importance in attracting, nurturing, and retaining young people in the primary sector. “We know that we are a valuable part of the sector and provide value to the primary industries by supporting young people to be successful. Farm Strong research has also proved that New Zealand Young Farmers has been invaluable to many people’s mental health and career journeys throughout their life. “We are nearing our 100-year anniversary and need the industry’s support to make sure we can continue our work, keep giving young people positive experiences and lead the industry into the future.”

LETTERS
It’s moo-ving day today, not just for dairy farmers but contract and sharemilkers. Contracts have been signed, finances settled and our rural population and their herds are travelling around Mid Canterbury and beyond. May 31 is also a busy day for lawyers, bankers, accountants and farm advisers, all those who’ve been involved in the transactions. Incred-abull.
We welcome your letters and emails, but: ■■ No more than 100 words. ■■ We reserve the right to edit or not publish.
OUR VIEW
A legacy that’s truly inspirational H
e was a boy from humble beginnings in Bluff, who went on to carve out an extraordinary travel industry career to prove you can succeed from anywhere. His name won’t mean much to many of you. Well, apart from our friends at House of Travel Ashburton because they would know the name Tony Laker very well. Tony was the award-winning founder of House of Travel Lakers in Invercargill and Gore. He was the personification of Southland resilience and a clear example of what could be achieved on a national and international scale from regional New Zealand. The story of his success should be told to those in Ashburton with innovation in their blood
Daryl Holden because it’s riveting and inspirational. When he started his business with wife Tracey in 1999, Tony had no money, no clients and this was at a time when there were 12 other travel agencies in Invercargill. It was a recipe for failure according to travel industry experts, who warned him that it was a terrible idea. They didn’t know Laker, who against all odds turned his company into one of the largest travel agencies in New Zealand, winning several awards and a
reported $28m turnover at the peak of its success. He picked up a New Zealand travel lifetime industry achievement award along the way, but halfway through 2020 he was diagnosed with a rare form of liver cancer. Last week, aged 57, he lost his battle with the big C, leaving behind Tracey and two children. Yesterday, a celebration of his life took place at one of the biggest funerals seen in Invercargill in decades. All day, one of his favourite songs kept rattling away in my head. Bad, Bad Leroy Brown was the tune. It was an upbeat, fun song that in many ways captured Tony’s lively, positive personality. You see, Tony and I were tennis rivals from many moons ago and had always stayed in
touch, both of us also emerging from the wrong side of the tracks in south Invercargill where he moved to during his primary school years. Both of us had that same steely determination to succeed and to never ever forget our roots. That’s something I remind my son of, to be proud of where you came from. Tony was certainly that, often recounting stories of being the son of a fisherman on the speakers’ circuit where he was always sought after. He supported numerous charities, including Hospice Southland where each Friday night he would deliver drinks for those in care, pouring them himself and chatting to everyone. He cared for people. He cared for his community. He was a self-
made millionaire but as genuine and likeable as they come. I contacted Tony shortly after arriving in Ashburton last year, hoping he would be able to make a trip here to talk to my staff and Mid Canterbury business and community leaders about how to be successful, about taking a punt and about working together as a community. That’s something I don’t see enough of in Ashburton, and I knew Tony could help turn that around. Tony was keen to do it, health permitting. Sadly, it never happened. Gone at 57, one of Southland’s most prominent and passionate businessmen in decades, leaving a legacy that will be hard to match. The boy from Bluff did good.

Run and Walk Ashburton
On Saturday May 28, members met to compete for the Johnny McGrath Memorial Trophy for walkers, and the runners a time trial. The 5km distance was set at Argyle Park on a beautiful sunny autumn day. Whilst club numbers were down on last year there was good competition, especially amongst the walkers which Johnny would have enjoyed. Stacey Hooper, Alison Conway and Andrew Saunders walked as a strong trio for the first two kilometres. Hooper and Conway continued on the heels of one another with just a minute separating them at the finish. The runners also had close competition with just over a minute separating Grace Forde and Tam Grant in the finish, followed soon after by Gary Whiting. Club members also acknowledged the recent passing of Marie McGrath. Like Johnny, Marie was a loyal and dedicated supporter of the run walk club. The McGrath Family were present for the race and hosted us for afternoon tea. Our thanks to our timekeepers Viv Strong, Debra Curtain, Marie Batty and Karen Hodgson and to Noel Batty, Cooper Batty, and Dave Strong for setting the course. Southern win a thriller at Hinds to advance Matt Markham Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat on Saturday, Southern’s bid to go back-to-back in the Combined Country Rugby competition is still very much alive. But it wasn’t without more than just a few nervous moments in their final-round clash with Springston on the Hinds Domain. Southern trailed for the entire match, before an 81st minute try next to the posts put them in front and ensured they finished top two in their pool and advanced to the Cup stage. There they’ll be joined by fellow local side, Celtic – who didn’t have to do anything on the weekend, other than just watch on as the results trickled through as they enjoyed the bye. It wasn’t quite so happy for an illness-stricken Methven, who were beaten by Ashley and will now head to the second tier of the competition for the playoff stage. But Rakaia gained some valuable momentum as they put in a big effort to thump Hornby on the Rakaia Domain. Out at Hinds, nothing went right for the majority of the match for Southern. A dour Springston side looked to have an answer for every question thrown their way by their hosts, and for large amounts of the game there seemed nothing the defending champions could do. An early Springston try and then a penalty had them in front 8-0, before Matt McAtamney burrowed over from close-range just before halftime to close the gap to just one, with Tom Middleton slotting the conversion. Southern’s brutal phase play was missing in action. There seemed a real lack of fluidity to their attack, with plenty of ball sent back over the heads from the boot only for Springston to slam right back on attack and put them under pressure again. Two penalties early in the sec-
Short and sharp Southern 24 (Matt McAtamney, Thomas McCormick, Adam Williamson, Eric Duff tries, Tom Middleton 2 conv) beat Springston 21. Rakaia 51 (Peter Taylor, Thomas Whittaker, Angus Mackenzie 2, Harry Ashworth, William McGoon, Masima Fakaosita tries, Whittaker 3 conv, 2 pen, Harvey Blyth 2 conv) beat Hornby 21. Methven 26 (Kris Wilder, Tait Chisman, Matt Stone, Xavier Bartlett tries, Rueben Early 2 conv, Henry Miller conv) lost to Ashley 44.

ond half extended the visitors’ lead and still there was no real response from Southern. When Thomas McCormick crashed over in the 66th minute, the tide looked like it was about to turn, only for a Springton intercept almost immediately afterwards to turn the game back in their favour, as they led 21-12 with just over 10 minutes left to play. But that seemed to kick Southern into gear. Where they had struggled to find some flow to their game in the previous 70 minutes, it magically appeared as they targeted attack close into the ruck and gained momentum. Adam Williamson put them back within reach in the 70th minute, dashing off the back of a maul near the line to score his third try of the season, and it was all on again with time rushing down on the clock. Southern got themselves back into the strike zone and had a real dig at the line, only to be held up, but from the corresponding scrum with time nearly up, they grabbed a tighthead and appeared to score next to the post. The try was given, but then ruled as a knock-on after the touch judge intervened. A penalty advantage was being played for the Southern side though, and electing to take a scrum with time up on the clock they pushed and burrowed their way toward the line, before Eric Duff finally found the white line
and scored to put his side in front. Thomas Middleton added the unnecessary extras and Southern were through to the top eight. It wasn’t pretty, but job done for the Southern men, who will now turn around and host Darfield at home this weekend in one playoff match. Celtic will also get homeground advantage, taking on Prebbleton for the second time this season, while Southbridge and Glenmark/Cheviot and Saracens and Springston will battle it out in the other quarter-finals. The remainder of the compe-
tition takes a break for Queen’s Birthday weekend. Methven, who were beaten 26-44 by Ashley on Saturday, will play in the second-tier next week and look likely to play Lincoln in that semi-final. The two sides drew when they met during the pool play stage of the competition. Rakaia, who scored seven tries on their way to a 51-21 win over Hornby on the weekend look set, with final standings to be officially confirmed, to play in the third tier and most likely have a road trip up to Ashley for their match on June 11.
Quarter-finals Southbridge v Glenmark/ Cheviot at Southbridge Celtic v Prebbleton at Celtic Saracens v Springston at Southbrook Park Southern v Darfield at Hinds *The remaining teams will return for the Trophy, Plate and Plaque sections on Saturday, June 11.

Three decades ‘well worth the waiting’ Matt Markham Ashburton’s Neumann brothers have finally climbed to the top of the harness racing mountain. After close to three decades of owning racehorses, the popular and well-known local businessmen, along with family and friends, enjoyed their first Group One success at Alexandra Park on Friday night when their potential superstar trotter, Highgrove, convincingly took out the $100,000 Northern Trotting Derby. And the showy chestnut didn’t just win, he obliterated his rivals – in the process smashing out a New Zealand record winning time in the hands of John Dunn for the training combination of his wife, Jenna and his father, Robert. And for Alan and Ian, who race the gelding alongside their children Emma Hintz and Vinnie Neumann as well as good friend Brent Clarke, you couldn’t have scripted a better result. “That was one of the biggest thrills I’ve ever had,” Alan said post-race. The nearly three decades wait for a Group One winner hasn’t been without trying from the Mid Canterbury brothers, who have raced countless good horses over the years, largely from the stable of the Dunns or accomplished Ashburton trainer Patrick O’Reilly. Tyron Scottie won 21 for them from O’Reilly’s barn in the late 80s and early 90s, but never

It wasn’t quite as happy hunting for the premier side, who were well beaten by Halswell 6-0 in their match though. The Mid Canterbury 17th grade team picked up a big win 10-0 and the Mid Canterbury 15th grade side were also in good form with a 3-0 victory.

Prolific supporters of the industry as sponsors and strong on the buying bench at the sales each year, the Neumann brothers have a long road still ahead in the game with interests in a number of horses – although Alan did admit that sometimes it was a little too many. “We’ve bred four or five this year and that’s enough, Ian always tells me I buy too many horses.”
The Ashburton Barbarians picked up their second win of the Canterbury Rugby League Men’s Reserve competition on the weekend with a strong win at home against the Burnham Chevaliers at Robilliard Park. Down 6-12 at the halftime break, the Baabaas hit full form in the second 40, running in five tries to Burnham’s three to win the match 32-24.
Match rescheduled A Mid Canterbury Senior Men’s hockey match, scheduled to be played in Ashburton on Saturday had to be postponed due to illness. The match against Hornby will be rescheduled to another date and will remain as a fixture on the NBS Turf in the Ashburton Domain. The Mid Canterbury Senior Women’s side had a tough day at the office on Saturday losing to the powerful Marist side 0-3.
Siblings claim mixed pairs title after titanic final Matt Markham
Ashburton’s mixed pairs and mixed fours combinations to head to the zone playoffs with the hope of chasing a New Zealand indoor bowls title later this season were found on the weekend. In a big day on the mats at McNally Street that started early Saturday morning and finished well into the evening, the two competitions were held one after the other, with many players doubling up for the day’s play. In the mixed fours in the morning, six teams took to the mats and by the final of the five rounds only two teams could win it and they were drawn to play each other.
Simon Thomas, Grant Wilson, Julie Thomas and Raewyn Robin took on Martin Nordqvist, Heather Dodds, John Lewis and Louise Mason. The Thomas-skipped quartet were undefeated, but Nordqvist had a chance to usurp them if he could win the final match and potentially go through with a high score differential. It took until the final end of the match, but Thomas was able to get the win to advance to the playoffs weekend early in July. After a quick turnaround, nine pairs combinations took to the mats for the Mixed Pairs. The brother and sister combination of Mat and Cait Bassett, the latter returning to the mats, were successful, heading off a good field of pairings to claim the title. From the nine entries, six qualified, with the Bassett pair
beating Nordqvist and Mason, while Dodds and Lewis beat Neil Atkinson and Ann Sunbeam in the other to advance to the semi-finals. The Bassetts advanced to the final beating Lewis and Dodds while Simon and Julie Thomas put themselves in with a chance of a second victory by beating Wilson and Rowena Mackenzie. The final went right down to the wire, and with scores all tied up at the end of the allotted ends an extra end was played, with the Bassetts picking up two shots to take the win. Both teams will now head to the zone finals, where they will play teams from Canterbury, South Canterbury and North Otago, with the winner heading to the national final to play zone winners from across the country in Wellington in September.
Cait and Mat Bassett won the Ashburton Indoor Bowls mixed pairs title on the weekend.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Thoughts intrude like pop-up ads on the internet – suggestions based on your history – but that doesn’t mean you have to act on them. Click the little “X” and bring your attention back to what matters now. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Shallow thinking leads to knowing enough to be dangerous. While not everything requires a deep dive, be alert to the signals that there might be more than what meets the eye. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Sometimes you wonder why you were even chosen, but you can stop that line of inquiry today because it’s easy to answer: You’re the best person for the job. Go and do it. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You’ll toss out ideas to your friends, and though they may not act on them, your position as a valuable contributor and influence in the group will be reinforced. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): One part of you sets the tone and the agenda for the rest of you. Your inner leader beats the drum for your better angels to follow, and follow they will... until they won’t. There’s an inner conversation and negotiation to work out today. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Inexperienced people can read about the inner world of others, but experienced people like you have felt it, so you can instantly spot it – pain, excitement, need – and seize the arising opportunity. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You’ll see a person’s attempt to hide something. You’re not interested in shaming or calling out bad behaviour; you just want the truth. Naughtiness is a cover-up for an honest, if unacceptable, desire or need. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Among the world’s more interesting jobs is the scientific station involving the search for extraterrestrial life. You can relate. You, too, await a distant affirmation. You won’t regret holding out hope. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Financial decisions may be serious and requiring of a rigorous thought process and strategy, but once the decisions are made, relax. It’s only money. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): There’s a difference between the detachment of effortless coolness and one of shy reservation, though it’s a difference many will not recognise. Go on and build your mystery; it’s working for you. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): With intelligence and compassion, you’ll connect with people on levels deeper than the business at hand. You’ll communicate from the heart, which will take surprisingly few words. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): People’s requests rarely come in the form of questions. You’ll tune into what people need and want, which is something very different from the literal meaning of the words spilling from their lips.
