SHOP smart SHOP loca Thanking our blooming lovely community By Tina Grumball If Samantha Trott could give the whole Ashburton community some thank you flowers, then she probably would. Why? Well, after being introduced to floristry in high school, Trott opened her business, Samantha Rose Florist, on Burnett Street in 2017. But that was only after running her own floral styling business out of her house for a couple of years – and relying on local patronage to get it off the ground. “We couldn’t be where we are today without the amazing support from the community,” she said. That’s why Trott was wholeheartedly behind the Guardian’s Shop Smart Shop Local – Put Your $ Where Your Heart Is campaign. It was all about promoting local businesses and enterprises, as well as the town of Ashburton. Trott is a big supporter, explaining that she either buys her flowers direct from growers or from the Christchurch flower auction. “It is very important to us that we are buying extremely fresh first-grade products and not relying on flowers out of the garden,” she said. Shopping locally also meant supporting the circle of local

local girls in her shop was “great for the town” too. “By having people support us, it just means heaps to little businesses.” Those Ashburton CBD “little businesses’’ have needed sup-
port in the past two years after the combined negative impacts of the street and footpath redevelopment project and Covid-19 making life tough. But Trott said her business was lucky because at Alert Level
3 they could operate for contactless delivery. “Over this time, we were very busy with missed occasions,” she said. “There was definitely a lot of generosity around the community. “We noticed flowers being sent to loved ones just for a little pick-me-up.” And now, with the CBD project all but done, and Covid-19 now a part of life, she said the business was going well. “We have noticed an awesome improvement of foot traffic, with having the streets completed this is great to see. “We are also flowing into wedding season and this is a very important part of our business. “Thank you so much for the Ashburton Guardian for bringing awareness to the community for Shop Smart, Shop Local, Put Your $ Where Your Heart Is campaign.’’

A brew-tiful move to Ashburton
Hospo business owners ‘love’ what they’re doing Tina Grumball Roadworks and Covid-19 have significantly slowed business for hospitality owners Gareth and Jamie Cadogan, but you won’t find them complaining. The Cadogans bought The Print Room night club on Burnett Street in 2017, commuting from Oamaru every week until February last year when they moved to Ashburton permanently. Lockdown prevented them from opening One Ninety Nine Café beside it until July 2020. “We’d sort of done our time there,” Gareth said regarding the move from Oamaru. “Moving to Ashburton was a good fit socially, financially, and economically.” Gareth and Jamie have settled in well, but they were not new to the hospitality sector, having been in it for 17 years. Gareth is a barista and his wife a chef, so the creation of the café made perfect sense. But Gareth said the whole point of the café was to “be involved within the community” and they built it with room to grow. There was also a family space that was breastfeeding friendly and it featured a baby changing table. But changing tact rather than changing nappies has been a focus for the Cadogans for close to two years, with the pandemic lockdowns and alert level uncertainty, and the ongoing redevelopment project of the town’s

Gareth said Ashburton’s town roadworks, which included the relaying of new footpaths and restricted customer access, have been “hugely hard” because their
businesses were tucked away down a side alley and relied on foot traffic. While the nightclub was closed, they’ve held private functions and have recently participated in the Dunk It for Plunket
fundraiser. Run nationwide, the Dunk it for Plunket campaign asks New Zealanders – individuals, workplaces and friends – to register to host a morning tea. Guests can make a cash dona-
tion while enjoying a cuppa and bite to eat, knowing the funds raised would help Plunket continue to provide critical services to families. Being able to do that meant much to them, which is why they were right behind the Guardian’s Shop Smart, Shop Local – Put Your $ Where Your Mouth Is campaign. The campaign aimed to promote local businesses and enterprises, especially those under financial pressure. It hoped to encourage Ashburtonians to support retailers especially or risk seeing some of them close their doors for good. The campaign was all about supporting the Ashburton community, which connected with the Cadogans. It’s what they love most about their work and their new life in Ashburton. “We love doing what we do and being able to interact with the public and provide services has been a huge thing for us,” Gareth said.

NZTA’s handling of SH1 diversions irks mayor Adam Burns
Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown has expressed his frustration at Waka Kotahi for “mismanaging” highway detours during recent motor vehicle accidents. The closure of State Highway 1 between Christchurch and Ashburton has been closed on occasion due to crashes with traffic being diverted through an inland route via the one lane Rakaia Gorge Bridge. But these instances have subjected motorists to lengthy delays with traffic backed up for several kilometres. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) has copped the blame for the hold-ups for not choppering contractors to the bridge site as originally agreed. At a recent Road Safety Co-ordinating Committee meeting, local police said that a highway patrol officer had to manage traffic at the bridge crossing unaided for several hours until crews had made it through the built up traffic. It was after a fatal accident at the Rakaia River Bridge closed State Highway 1 during a busy Labour weekend last month. The matter was again raised by

councillors at last week’s council meeting with urban councillor John Falloon describing the management of the diversions as “an absolute disaster”. “I know people who have been waiting for 20 to 30 minutes to get across that Gorge bridge because there’s been no-one there to take control of the traffic,” he said. Brown said the agency had
now failed to address the issue at least three times. “They told us they were going to helicopter people in to deal with the traffic and it still doesn’t happen. NZTA maintenance contract manager John Keenan apologised at the November 2 road safety meeting and said he was not aware that the choppering of staff had not occurred.
Brown said he would be writing a letter to the agency expressing council’s displeasure. “We would like an assurance that these alternative measures are put in place.”
Canterbury cocaine bust: Name suppression lapses for Colombians Three of the Colombian nationals charged by police in one of New Zealand’s biggest ever drug busts were working in Mid Canterbury. Eight people have been arrested as part of a joint 10-month National Organised Crime Group (NOCG) and Customs sting dubbed Operation Mist. Six Colombian nationals – five of whom were working as contractors on Canterbury farms – and

one Argentinian – appeared in court earlier this month and interim name suppression has now lapsed for some of the accused. Esteban Blanco Gaviria, a 34-year-old dairy farm worker from the Ashburton district, is charged with conspiring with “persons unknown in Colombia” to import cocaine, seven charges of importing or attempting to import the drug and four charges of
money laundering, amounting to $605,000 and alleged to have happened in Auckland, Christchurch and Rolleston stretching back four years. Maria Emilia Otero, a 30-yearold from a property in Rakaia, has been charged with participating in an organised criminal group to import cocaine, along with attempting to import cocaine into New Zealand between May and
September this year. It was previously reported that Ruth Yanid Ramirez Alfonso, 38, from a rural address in Mid Canterbury, has been charged with being in an organised criminal group involved in importing the class A drug methamphetamine, along with six charges of importing or attempting to import cocaine. They are all due back in court on December 1.
The Walnut Avenue and East Street intersection will be temporarily closed this weekend as part of the intersection upgrade. Construction on the $15 million Walnut Avenue project, began in August and will replace the two roundabouts with traffic lights, upgrade the railway level crossing and improve cycling and walking paths. This weekend the major earthworks continue with Fulton Hogan set to remove the existing road surface and to lay new asphalt on the Walnut Ave and East Street intersection. The work will close the intersection from 7am on Sunday until 7am on Monday. Over the past six weeks Fulton Hogan has made steady progress on the project. They have completed most of the major trenching for services and constructed the northern stormwater basin as well as building the new kerb and channel throughout the site. New light poles have been installed and some existing light poles were relocated while the footpath construction adjacent to the Ashburton Domain is under way. The next steps in the project include completing excavation of the southern stormwater basin, building more kerb and channel, continuing stormwater drainage works and footpath construction across the site. Traffic light foundations will also go in as part of the new road layout construction. The old KiwiRail building is also set to be demolished as part of the project. The project is expected to be completed by early 2023.

Farmers flood streets in protest Heather Chalmers A big convoy of tractors, utes and other farm vehicles drove through Ashburton for the second time this year as farmers took their frustration with government regulations to the streets on Sunday. “It was a bit hard to tell numbers as everyone was on the move,” Ashburton protest organiser Robbie Shefford said. “There were good numbers of participants and good numbers of people showing support from the sidelines. “Even traffic that was passing through Ashburton were tooting and waving and carrying on. “It was successful and well supported.” Shefford said he did some traffic control on the corner of West Street and Racecourse Road as he could see a potential bottleneck occurring, but otherwise traffic congestion was not a significant issue. Organised by farmer group Groundswell NZ, the Mother of All Protests in Ashburton was replicated at around 70 towns and cities throughout New Zealand. Protest participants drove a circuit around Ashburton between 1pm and 2pm. Starting at the Ashburton Do-
main, they travelled north on West Street then left into Racecourse Road. At Belt Road they turned left then drove straight through onto Oak Grove and turned left onto Alford Forest Road. A final left onto West Street took the convoy back to the domain. Utes, stock trucks, fertiliser spreaders and every type of trac-
tor from an old Fergie to the latest big horsepower John Deere took part. As it is a busy time of the year for agricultural contractors, some came straight from a job with their silage choppers and balers to join the protest circuit, before heading back to work. Groundswell was formed last year in protest against Govern-
ment regulations which the group says are unworkable for farmers. Groundswell is opposed to the mandated Three Waters reforms and wants the ute tax dropped as no alternative electric vehicles are available. It wants the national policy on freshwater amended to reflect regional differences, Significant National Areas amended and the
biodiversity policy scrapped, with private property rights protected. Groundswell co-founder Bryce McKenzie said these policies had only added to everyone’s worries and frustrations and it wanted genuine consultation. If the government did not address these issues, Groundswell planned further protest action in Wellington in February.

‘I put my life in their hands’ Maddison Gourlay An Ashburton woman says she’s still waiting for an apology from St John after an emergency call misdiagnosis nearly killed her. Annette Holden recently went into life-threatening anaphylactic shock, and feared the worst, after a St John medical alarm emergency call handler told her to take an aspirin to overcome concerning chest pain. “I am asthmatic, so I didn’t know if it was that playing up or if it was something a bit more serious,” Holden said. “They told me to take aspirin and my throat started to close up.” Holden is allergic to anti-inflammatories, which unbeknown to her included aspirin. “In the moment, I trusted the mobile alarm person on the phone,” Holden said. “In the moment, it was a stressful situation and I didn’t even think twice. “Because they knew of that

By the time Ashburton St
John Ambulance staff arrived at Holden’s house it was “getting bad’’, she said. “They were going to helicopter me to Christchurch, but the helicopter had to attend something more serious in Timaru. “So a team of specialists met me in the ambulance in Dunsandel to check on me and then I continued on to Christchurch
Hospital.” Due to her near-death escape, Holden had since experienced ongoing seizures and memory deterioration. “I can’t drive, work, see friends. I am housebound,” she said. St John South Island Ambulance Communications Centre manager, Liz Beavon, said via a written statement that it had carried out an internal investigation, which had “identified an opportunity to review our process’’. She also said it was not common knowledge that aspirin was an anti-inflammatory. “And the triage tool (patient assessment procedure) that emergency call handlers utilise does not highlight this.” Holden said it was good that St John had reviewed its processes, “but I am still waiting for an apology”. St John said it had apologised but not so according to Holden, who remained upset and unwell because of its near-fatal error. “I put my life in their hands when I pressed that (medic alarm) button, like many others.’’
Cemetery clean-up to be fast-tracked Adam Burns Clean-up of the storm-tossed Methven Cemetery has been signed off by councillors after severe winds casued tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage. The cemetery, located 500m from the Methven town centre, has been branded an hazardous environment after high winds thrashed the district in September. It has been unable to be used due to risk of further falling trees and extensive debris at the site is now waiting to be disposed of. The weather event also destroyed a section of a newly installed walkway although the trees coming down had opened up the cemetery to more sunlight.
A recent photo of the Methven Cemetery. The work was expected to cost $90,000, however the Methven Cemetery’s operational budgets were underspent by more than $40,000 over the previous two financial years. Councillors approved funding of the clean up in accordance with pre-existing plans to expand the cemetery site, but not before councillors quibbled over the dollars.

Some councillors believed that council should be able to fund the work through its existing budgets rather than the community footing the bill. Councillor Stuart Wilson said council’s parks and recreation programme should be able to cope with funding the cleanup. “Have parks and recreations ever thought about living with-
in their budget,” he said. Open spaces manager Ian Soper said it was a “left field and unforeseen” weather event, unbudgeted, which had caused the issue. Wilson was still unmoved before councillors Carolyn Cameron and Angus McKay made further enquires around logistics and budgeting. Urban councillor Leen Braam suggested some councillors were being too choosy around funding of the clean-up. “I’m a wee bit amazed,” he said. “We’ve been paying a lot of money for floods and roading and farmers and that was a natural event as well and here we have a natural event with trees falling over and all of a sudden it’s open spaces’ problem. “To me that is not right.”
Pioneers celebrated; diabetes still rife Malcolm Hopwood The discovery of insulin 100 years ago is being celebrated by medical people in Ashburton and throughout the world. Insulin was discovered by Frederick Banting, Charles Best and JJR Macleod at the University of Toronto, Canada in 1921 and is a lifesaver for people with diabetes. In describing the three pioneers as among the most important medical researchers in the world, Ashburton’s Dr Anibal Martinez, said diabetes is a chronic condition resulting from diet, lifestyle and heritage. November is Diabetes Awareness Month and Dr Martinez, the spokesperson for Ashburton GPs, said type 2 diabetes is the number one cause of blindness and kidney failure where sufferers will end up on dialysis. “Type 2 has a significant family history and, in particular, affects the Maori and Pacific Island population,” he said. “Anyone with type 2 should have regular blood tests, annual eye screenings and do everything to prevent themselves from future complications such as heart disease and kidney problems.” He said while most people know they have diabetes, there is a percentage who don’t. “If you are overweight, have low energy, are thirsty, urinate frequently, have high blood pressure and a family history, you might have the symptoms. “Visit your doctor and be tested. It’s a serious disease and responsible for illness and death,” he said. However, he points out it’s preventable if you follow recommendations like enjoying a healthy diet, regular exercise, avoiding sugars and carbohydrates and having regular medical checks. Type 1 diabetes occurs at a young age and is treated with insulin which assists the body to manage the sugar intake in food and beverages. “Both types require lifelong treatment and medication,” he said.

Splash of colour for parents centre Maddison Gourlay The Ashburton Parents Centre has had a well-needed rejuvenation. Lacey Cairns’ mother is on the Ashburton Parents Centre committee and when the centre decided they wanted a mural of some kind, Jo Cairns suggested one of her artistic daughters would be perfect for the job. “And that’s how I got involved,” Cairns said. “It turned out even better than I expected.” The brief was for a fun, kiwiana mural that the children would love, said centre president Claire Smitheram. “It is just above and beyond what we expected,” she said.
“Our tamariki just love it, the music notes fit in really well and it’s perfect for the music and movement class.” Cairns painted every aspect of the mural freehand, most proud of the pohutukawa flower and the monarch butterfly. “The monarch butterfly took up so much time, some parts of it were so detailed I needed to use barbecue skewers,” she said. Cairns also painted giant daisies on the back door of the building, which is attached to a corridor that has bothered Smitheram as long as she has been part of the Ashburton Parents Centre. “Now with Lacey’s mural and some Ashburton College students giving the whole centre a clean and putting a coat of paint on the corridor it is looking fantastic here,” she said. “And we moved some equipment from in front of the new mural, so people walking past can see Lacey’s wonderful mural.”

Hospital’s care plan for safe mobility Malcolm Hopwood A care plan focusing on safe mobility and preventing falls is being prepared at Ashburton Hospital to keep patients safe. Quality Safety and Work Force nurse manager, Lisa Campbell, and Ashburton Rural Health nurse educator, Rebecca Woodford, are advocating for nursing staff to engage with patients and “empower them to have input in what they hope to achieve from their stay in hospital”. They want “their values and preferences to be taken into account”. As part of the discussion, patients would explain what they want from their medical team. Bedside boards alongside patients will be kept up to date and will document their mobility and other medical conditions. “These let the patient, their whanau and the multi-disciplinary team know how the patient

with patients to achieve their goals. It’s what’s important to them,” she said. For example, the care plan will document a patient’s safe mobility when walking with a walking stick to the end of the corridor and back. “We want them to use the equipment more safely,” they said. Both Campbell and Woodford emphasise the seriousness of falls, especially to older patients. With brittle bones they can result in a fracture, they said. The care plans educate patients about keeping safe and preventing falls. Physios and occupational therapists have the capacity to make home visits if a patient is assessed as requiring one they said. The care plan also addresses the safe and appropriate use of bedrails, “ensuring staff understand the decision to use them as an enabler is a partnership agreement between patients and their whanau.” The end result is to partner with patients to achieve safer mobility.

A member of the public reported a large amount of smoke coming from a property on Thews Road near Hinds on Sunday morning. The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade attended the scene around 10am to find a controlled burn taking place. The crew was satisfied with the controlled burn and left around 30 minutes later.
Guest artist A well-known local painting identity has been invited back as guest artist for the Ashburton Society of Arts’ Christmas Exhibition. Jennifer Neutze established herself as a painter in Mid Canterbury before moving north. She’s been painting and tutoring professionally for many years with group and solo shows throughout New Zealand from her home studio at Governor’s Bay. The paintings on display at the Ashburton studio represent a change in direction from water colour to oil painting, and also a change in style. The Christmas exhibition runs until December 12 and is open at weekends and on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays when the sign is out the front.

Federated Farmers’ concerns about the serious shortage of experienced agricultural machinery operators is proving justified as summer approaches. A shortage of experienced operators is being felt across rural New Zealand, and the pressure is building on both farmers and rural contractors, the federation’s immigration and employment spokesman Chris Lewis said. “Unfortunately, we all saw this coming a long way out. Federated Farmers has repeatedly explained the implications of having no international seasonal rural workers to the Immigration, Primary Industries and Workplace Relations and Safety Ministers, the Primary Production Select Committee and the chief executive of WorkSafe. “The shortage is leaving both contractors and farmers in the lurch and we have serious concerns for the coming season. “ These are complex machines that require experienced operators,” Lewis said. Rural contractors deal with a workload that is both seasonal and weather reliant.
An experienced team of operators is needed to ensure that arable and forage crops can be planted and harvested at the required times. “Without enough operators, the industry is facing a loss of production and contractors are facing health and safety risks, both through long hours worked by the staff available and being forced to put inexperienced operators in charge of machinery.” Stress also comes on for farmers who are relying on contractors to prepare supplementary animal feed for when grass is short, Lewis said. “Rural contracting companies have done all they can to attract and train new staff, but a willing young Kiwi can’t match the experience of those workers who have come straight from driving the same machines in the northern hemisphere.” Federated Farmers is urging farmers and contractors to sit down and work together to plan how to work with the limited labour and time available. “This is not going to be an ordinary season on the farm,” Lewis said.

Milling wheat sold to feed stock Heather Chalmers Fears of a substantial drop in milling wheat have been realised with the latest grower survey showing sowings are down 23 per cent for the 2022 harvest compared with this year’s. Uncertainty around a new milling wheat procurement process combined with firming prices for alternative feed grains and other crops have led many growers to switch, Federated Farmers’ arable industry chairman Colin Hurst said. “It’s not surprising that growers are moving to more profitable options.” It was hugely disappointing when growers have been lobbying for a strategy to increase the area in milling wheat, used to make bread and baked goods, and reduce reliance on imported grain for a staple food, Hurst said. The latest Arable Industry Marketing Initiative (AIMI) grower survey shows that while milling wheat is estimated to be down 23 per cent on last season, feed wheat is up 17 per cent and feed barley up 9 per cent. Demand for feed grain was
exceptionally strong, with feed wheat and barley selling for $460 a tonne on farm, which was equivalent to the milling wheat price. Milling wheat has traditionally attracted a higher price than feed wheat as it is lower yielding and has to meet higher quality specifications for protein, screenings and falling number (weather and sprout damage), however this premium has been eroded this season. “That is why farmers are selling milling wheat into the feed industry which is a bit sad really. It is really good quality milling wheat and it is going to feed animals, whereas we would prefer to feed
people,” Hurst said. Imported grain prices are well over $500/t, with skyrocketing sea freight costs a significant factor. This meant domestically grown wheat was much cheaper than the imported equivalent and Hurst said he welcomed dialogue with flourmillers to encourage more milling wheat to be grown in New Zealand. “We just need a fair price. “The harvest only happens once a year, so the ‘buying just in time’ approach is just not good enough anymore.” The “die was cast” for this coming harvest, but growers looked to autumn 2022, when the next crop was starting to be sown, for buy-
ers to signal improved prices and contracts. Federated Farmers have taken a complaint to the Commerce Commission about new milling wheat procurement practices introduced this year it believes may be anti-competitive. Farmers have held a meeting with Commerce Minister David Clark, organised by Rangitata MP Jo Luxton, who is also the chairwoman of the Primary Production Select Committee. Last year there were three buyers purchasing New Zealand-grown milling wheat for domestic flour mills, but this year just one agent is handling the purchase of milling wheat for two
of the buying mills. This is believed to represent up to 60 per cent of the home-grown product. After harvest, earlier this year, 11,000t of milling wheat was sold for stock feed, Hurst said. “That shows the strength of the feed market. It is very hard to find any grain that is not committed.” Feed grain is used by the pig, poultry and dairy industries. Hurst said he had fielded many inquiries from people wanting grain, but it was not available. Farm input costs had also risen substantially with urea (nitrogen) fertiliser up 70 per cent in price since the start of last year “and it looks like it is still going up”. Agrichemicals were also rising in price. “It is a cost spiral. We are getting letters in the mail all the time saying things are going up.” Arable farmers had other cropping options, with grass seed contract volumes up this year. Most arable farmers also had a livestock component to their operation, with red meat prices at record levels. The AIMI survey showed that the total area sown in cereals is estimated to be 98,300 hectares, which is up 7 per cent (up 6600ha) on last season. Crops are generally growing well, despite a slow start for spring crops as a result of cold and wet weather.
Selwyn farmers reduce nitrogen loss Dairy farmers in Canterbury’s Selwyn catchment are actively reducing their environmental footprint, with data indicating many have reduced nitrogen loss by 30 per cent. “Selwyn farmers have been working hard to achieve this milestone, taking steps on their farms to look after the environment,” DairyNZ solutions and development lead advisor Virginia Serra said. “Preliminary information shows 70 per cent of Selwyn
farmers have met their 30 per cent nitrogen loss reduction target set by Environment Canterbury. “Another 20 per cent are well on track to achieving it and are receiving support to get there. The remaining farmers will be supported this season to make progress.” DairyNZ collated the data from dairy companies and irrigation companies, plus a DairyNZ survey. Dairy farmers are using Farm
Environment Plans to identify actions to reduce their footprint, including improving water quality. Nitrogen is one of several contributors to water quality, with phosphorus, sediment and E. coli also playing a vital role and covered by the farm plans. “Reducing nitrogen loss over time helps improve water quality and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” Serra said. “Achieving these results is not easy and farmers are working
hard to deliver. They are doing their best to keep up with regulations, across the spectrum of farming.” DairyNZ has been working with farmers from Selwyn and Hinds for three years through the Meeting a Sustainable Future project, supporting them to reduce nitrogen loss. This includes trialling options with 40 partner farms and sharing knowledge with local farmers. A recent DairyNZ survey showed all Selwyn and Hinds
farmers surveyed are adapting practices to reduce nitrogen loss. This includes improving irrigation efficiency and effluent management, reducing fertiliser use, using the grazing herb plantain (which reduces nitrogen loss) and some are changing their stocking rate. Most Selwyn dairy farmers are required by ECan rules to reduce nitrogen losses by 30 per cent by 2022, compared to their baseline figure, an average from 20092013.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): You’re bold, blunt and get away with it because you’re also benevolent. (Never mind being totally in the right – which is something to keep to yourself, as it never goes down easy.) TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): It is possible to go through days without feeling completely awake. Today, when the ideas drop in, it’s a gentle high – like the plants must feel when the rains begin – perked up, more than alive. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): The solution comes from seeing the problem in different ways. One new idea is a start – proof of the magic difference perspective can make. At 25 alternatives, you’ve only begun to scratch the surface. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You’ll be drawn to people who do something outside of what you would usually encounter. They inspire (encourage or flat force you!) out of your comfort zone. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Worse than doing a boring thing repeatedly is thinking a boring thing repeatedly – the number of repetitions expands exponentially. Quick! Introduce exciting thoughts before the zombies win! VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): A person’s choice of company has everything to do with what feels familiar and comfortable. Of course, “familiar” and “comfortable” doesn’t always equal “healthy,” it might equal “irritating” or “diminishing.” LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Adults see the rules of orderly society; toddlers see playgrounds of possibility; e.g., perfectly painted walls are blank canvases waiting for a crayon mural. You’ll benefit from moments of toddler mentality. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): One change, of even the smallest detail, affects everything else. You’d be surprised at how a day of eating everything with a butter knife or making only right turns can wholly alter your destiny. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Smugness will be a huge turnoff. Those who act like they’ve got everything “on lock” are likely missing the complexities and nuances that interest you most. Take curiosity over confidence. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Every muscle in your body has gotten some degree of use. But has every cell of your brain been activated? Not even Leonardo da Vinci could claim that! New areas of your mind will tingle today. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Whatever it is today, take your sweet time. Go at the pace that allows you to absorb and experience. Let the others speed ahead or lag behind. It doesn’t matter. Your life = your clock. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): True confidence isn’t an empowered and puffed-up state. It’s a surrender to the task at hand. The reactions of others become irrelevant because all focus is entwined in the movement of the dance.

Okay, now that really is funny
I
t’s hard to know what was funnier from Sunday’s international rugby fallout. Was it All Blacks’ coach Ian Foster insisting his team “were making progress’’, despite being thumped 40-25 by France to end 2021 with three losses from 15 internationals? That, remember, was the ABs’ worst total number of defeats in a season since the four they dropped in 2009. Or was it former All Black Andrew Mehrtens, in his role as an Australian TV comments person, revealing his wit and frustration after Wales’ centre Nick Tompkins swatted the ball down and forward against the Wallabies, but was somehow allowed to sprint away to score in a pivotal moment? Every player on the field had stopped at the knockdown, including Tompkins, and waited for referee Mike Adamson to award a Wallabies penalty. It never came.
Daryl Holden “Merts’’ summed up his feelings about the ref when he said, “global supporters of Mike Adamson – both of them’’ would have agreed with his call, but no-one else. The luckless Wallabies, who battled bravely with 14 players, lost 29-28 at the death. That meant for the first time in 45 years they went through a northern hemisphere tour winless. Ouch. But this is not about the Wallabies because the All Blacks, as we all saw, have issues of their own. Many, in fact. The loss to France, following the defeat to Ireland, and the stumbles against South Africa, have left questions aplenty to consider. Here’s a few that jump out:
■■ How much of the All Blacks’ poor showings in the past two tests could be put down to their gruelling 2021 season where they played 10 tests across 13 weeks and were away from home for three months? ■■ Is that fatigue and unprecedented tour line what Foster will push when he undergoes an annual review with the top brass at New Zealand Rugby? ■■ Though NZR has never fired an All Blacks’ coach in the professional era, is that now a serious option with Foster, even though he has signed a contract extension through to the 2023 Rugby World Cup? ■■ What do you think All Blacks’ coach-in-waiting, Scott Robertson, would be thinking now? ■■ Who else has concerns about first five-eighth Richie Mo’unga, who can’t seem to transform his brilliance for the Crusaders to test match play where in big

games he goes missing a bit, as he did against France? Why did we go into our shells when it came to counterattacking options in the past two tests, preferring to kick the ball back (and often poorly) rather than running it back and using our support skills and ability in unstructured attacks, which for so long had kept us ahead of the chasing pack? If you had to rank the best international teams in the game right now where would the All Blacks sit? Maybe fifth. Behind South Africa, Ireland and France, and probably England. Is it time to throw big Ethan de Groot into the frame more next season, the Stags’ prop has the size, mobility and a bruising defensive game that we need and that Ireland and France certainly has in its props? Can we just leave Rieko Ioane at centre and stop flip-flopping
him between there and the left wing? ■■ Is Samisoni Taukei’aho now our number one hooker? He surely needs to start big tests next year. ■■ Can we agree that the David Havili experiment should be over? ■■ If captain Sam Cane and Ardie Savea are certainties in the loose forwards then does that mean the impressive Dalton Papalii should be moved to blindside? ■■ Where does league star Roger Tuivasa-Sheck fit into the All Blacks’ backline next year? On the wing or in the midfield? ■■ Rest assured, NZR didn’t fork out big bucks just for him to play for the Blues. ■■ If you were a betting man, would you slap your house on the All Blacks winning the 2023 Rugby World Cup? Didn’t think so. None of us are that crazy, are we?

Mo-ing down the top spot in NZ
O
nce again, this wonderful place we live in has blown me away. The week before the start of November, Tessa from The Country radio show sent out an email urging people to join their Movember team. I haven’t cultivated a moustache for charity for many years, in fact the last time I did, I had the organisers of the event contact me to say that I was breaking the rules and if I didn’t fall in line, I was facing further action. I had organised a breakaway competition, kind of like the Cavaliers tour to South Africa back in the day. Back then The Rock radio station had full association with Movember and here was some womble in Ashburton on the radio organising a mou-grow for local charity. It all ended well and I even got a pat on the back from the ‘boss’ in Auckland because somehow the Herald got hold of the story and I ended up get a bit of coverage in the rag. So, I replied to Tessa and said you can count me in. I set up my ‘Movember’ page on the website, including adding a $500 goal for the month. I galloped out of the fundraising gate thanks to my annual Melbourne Cup sweepstakes which I normally run for Riding for the Disabled, but gave them a year off and banked the funds for Movember. The initial $20 a ticket sweep sold so well I did a second $10 sweep as well. $720 in the tin and goal achieved two days into the month. That got the bit well and truly lodged between the teeth and I urged the hamster into the wheel and tried to come up with some
Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR other fundraising ideas. Morning tea giveaways turned into auctions and a grovelling post searching for items to auction from local businesses was answered with huge generosity. A chat with Chris Hindson resulted in him saying “ANZCO would be keen to support your mission Hoops. How would a meat package valued at around $700 work for you?” “Yeah, that’ll work nicely,” I replied. After a sleep on it and some more hamster work, I went back to Chris and suggested a raffle could be better than an auction. Rather than having one person outbidding everyone, it would be nice to open it up to as many people as possible, no matter how flush they are. And it may work out better for the fundraising pot. So up went the post last Thursday morning on the book of faces. Every $10 donation equalled one ticket to win the meat pack. Friday lunchtime I popped out to ANZCO to grab the big box of meat and Chris greeted me with the superb news that they wanted to give me a $1000 boost as well and the package. I was amazed at the number of $10 donations and all the awesome “Keep up the good work” comments with them. Very inspiring. The donations totalled $4780 and it was the Honda Country team that landed the big meat win. At the end of last week, I had
passed the $10,000 mark and had slipped into fourth spot in NZ for individual fundraisers. The leader is only $2000 ahead of me and I hope to mow them down this week with the help of some more out of the square ideas,
help from local business people and the support of our awesome local community. I’ll let you know how we go. Till next week. Hoo Roo Phill Merv Hughes Hooper

How soon is too soon to put up Christmas trees?
O Christmas tree . . . The festive season is officially upon us. Ashburton District Council contractors yesterday scaled great heights as they erected a Christmas tree in the new-look CBD on East Street. The concrete pad to support the tree has been poured with the paving of the pad finished last week. Also up in the air, are plans to “light up” the tree by community leaders, although council is tentatively aiming for an event on Saturday. PHOTO ADAM BURNS 221121-AB-0947
The Ashburton District Council erected its Christmas tree in the Ashburton town centre on Monday, in the new location on East Street. The Guardian asked when people put theirs up at home and if putting them up in November is too early? Here is what you said: Nathan Bartlett: It’s been up a couple of weeks, I have no say in the matter. Rachael Crawford: Never too early put up the Xmas tree especially this year. We put ours up yesterday. Kim Anderson: First weekend of November ours went up. Savann Siemsen: It’s never to soon to bring a bit of joy for people especially the children. The grinches will get over it. Andrea Scott: Beginning of December and not before. Crazy if u do it before. Xmas has always been in December. Aimee Fawcett: Got it done yesterday. Kids called in reinforcements (Poppa) to
convince daddy to let us put it up in November. Cheryl Haslett: Have not had one almost three years as it is usually just the two of us here on that day. Suzannah Wundele: My tree never gets put up until December. I think earlier than that is a bit silly! Karen Smollett: I haven’t put my tree up yet, but I have some decorations out. Caitlin Burbidge: Ours went up on Halloween. April Blissett: Mines already up has been up since Thursday. Karen Taylor: 1st December Suzy King: Mine went up a week ago. Shinene Appleton: Put up 12 days before xmas and leave it up 12 days after. That’s what I’ve done every year. Melissa Barwell: Up on the 1st December and down on the 26th December. Laureece Leckie: First week in November.

fter losing more than 100 games of rugby, you’d think we might be a little better at it. Yet, no matter how many times the scoreline doesn’t reflect success after 80 minutes of rugby for the All Blacks, New Zealand is a nation that seems incapable of getting its collective head around the fact that the supposed greatest team in the world was defeated. And the automatic reaction is to find someone culpable. It is a weird feeling, watching New Zealand’s pride and joy get beaten. We’re not used to it. We don’t like it. We can’t stand it. And while the hate mail for coach Ian Foster started rolling
in after about 15 minutes of the French demolition at Stade De France on Sunday morning, a lot of it read as being misguided. Yes, Foster is the fall guy. He’s the coach, so he needs to take the brunt of the flak for any time this team, which we demand must be unbeatable every time they step onto a rugby paddock, gets touched up. But there’s 15 men on the field and eight guys on the pine who are equally as much to blame. And we often forget about that. There’s an unhealthy obsession with seeing Scott Robertson take over from Foster immediately. And while the shredder at NZ Rugby headquarters will be gnawing at the bit at the opportunity to get its teeth into Fozzie’s contract – there’s no real proof to suggest that had the Crusaders coach been at the helm, we would have seen a different result on Sunday morning, and indeed seven days
earlier against Ireland. The basic fact of the matter is, we were outplayed. Not once, not twice, but three times this season, if you include the defeat to South Africa in the Rugby Championship. And do you know what the real heart-wrenching part of it is? We didn’t deserve to win any one of those three matches. South Africa, Ireland and France were quite simply the better team on the paddock on each occasion. It doesn’t really come down to coaching at the end of it all. We were simply out-passioned and out-played and in the world of sport, that’s going to happen from time to time. Our biggest issue is that it’s happened three times within the space of a few months. So, it hurts that little bit more, given the fact that we’re not that used to it. Scapegoats are notoriously easy to find when we’re caught in the pains of emotion, and
Foster is an easy target. But our leadership group went missing for a huge part of that match. Sam Whitelock and Brodie Retallick were almost unseen, Aaron Smith was well short of a gallop, Sam Cane too and Jordie Barrett produced his worst performance in the All Blacks jersey. They are the players who over years we’ve looked toward to pull us out of a hole. To turn the match on its head with one or two magical moments. But when the push came to the shove on Sunday morning, they weren’t there to accept the challenge, and instead they blended into a team that had no answer. And that alone is the most concerning aspect for All Blacks fans going forward. Discussions will be held over the coming months as reviews are undertaken and it may well eventuate that the pressure does go on Foster to get results
or it’s curtains for him, but with a World Cup just around the corner, taking a good hard look at those senior members of the team and asking them to reflect on their own performances should be equally as high up on the agenda.
What do you think? Is the current state of the All Blacks down to Foster’s role as coach? Or are we seeing a deeper-seated issue where the rest of the world has finally caught up, and our golden players who have guided us through some of our most brilliant moments are starting to show they’re not quite up to the All Black standard anymore? Team Wilson get the winning groove back in A Grade tennis Matt Markham Mid Canterbury A Grade tennis leaders Team Head bounced back to winning form on the weekend, but underneath them the battle for who deserves to sit in second spot took another twist and turn. The fourth round of the season saw a rematch of rounds from the opening weekend last month, and while Team Head again comfortably accounted for their rivals, Team Wilson – the rematch between Babolat and Yonex was reversed, with the former claiming a 6-3 victory on the courts of the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre. Babolat came out firing on all cylinders in Saturday’s match, winning four of the six singles match-ups and two of the three doubles clashes to secure the win. Singles victories to Rhys Cromie over Jake Parsons, Gareth Evans over Maggie Crosby, Josh Gilbert over Mike Kerr and Holly-Jayne Feutz over Drew Gilbert paved the way to success. For Yonex, Go Tamura kept up his good early season form with a win
over Lee Gilbert, while Ashton Cromie defeated Jacob Adam. In doubles play, Cromie and Gilbert were unable to match Parsons and Tamura in the top ranked match-up, but Evans and Gilbert were too good for Crosby and Kerr, while Adam and Feutz breezed past Cromie and Gilbert in the other. The result sees Babolat move into a clear second in the standings ahead of Yonex – but there’s still some work to do to knock over Team Head. After a shock defeat in the previous round, Team Head bounced right back into a form with a 7-2 win over Team Wilson, who are yet to get a win on the board for the season. Tyler Leonard and Ryan Watt both grabbed singles wins at the top end beating Aidan Watt and Pete Leonard respectively. Riley Breen showcased his talent to get one back for Team Wilson by beating Ollie Bubb, and Isabella van Dooren did the same by beating Jason Pickard. But wins to Jayden Cromie over Brendon Adam and Lachlan Adam over Phil Crozier put Team Head in a good position ahead of the doubles action, where they claimed all three matches – albeit with two of them going to tie-breakers.

Horror run continues for Allenton, Tech win in style Matt Markham Allenton are still without a victory in South Canterbury Cricket’s Tweedy Cup, but their Mid Canterbury bedfellows, Tech Stags, are seemingly going from strength to strength. In contrasting matches on the Ashburton Domain on Saturday afternoon, the two local sides felt each side
Scoreboards Allenton 79 all out – Satwant
Singh 20, Satveer Singh 13, Muhammad Ateeq 10 Celtic 80-4 – Kawal Singh 2-31, Satwant Singh 1-15, Kulvinder Kirk 1-5 Tech Stags 274 all out – Des Kruger 84, Ryan Bell 50, Matt Tait 29, Jason Morrison 23, Sam Clark 23 Temuka 47 all out – Ryan Bell 4-20, Alex Hooper 3-14, Richard Print 1-6, Harry Jones 1-7.
of the emotions of cricket, with Allenton humbled by Celtic and Tech dominant against Temuka. With high hopes of causing an upset, Allenton won the toss in their match and elected to bat first – a decision Karmjeet Singh was left to ponder over when his four opening batsmen, including himself, were back in the shed inside the first seven overs of the innings. Celtic’s Ben Watson was in complete control with the ball, taking seven wickets as he ripped his way through the Allenton batting line-up, and left them decimated as they limped through to 79 before they were all out inside 23 overs. Only Satwant Singh provided resistance. He batted for 36 deliveries and scored 20 runs, one of only three Allenton batsmen to reach double figures as the batting yips continued for the side. With a paltry total to defend, it was always going to be tricky for the Allenton bowlers. They did grab two early wickets, but Celtic kept their cool and calmy negotiated chasing down the target within 22 overs, losing four of their batsmen along the way to win the match by six wickets. With six losses next to their name, Allenton will be out this week to really focus on getting that elusive victory on
the board when they take on Temuka, but the Stags did them no favours on Saturday. The Stags demolished the Temuka side by 217 runs, a result that will leave the southern boys smarting and out for revenge this weekend. Captain Jason Morrison won the toss and elected to bat, and it proved to be the right decision, as all of his side’s top six made good contributions. Des Kruger, not for the only time over the weekend, led the scoring stakes with 84, but good totals by Ryan Bell (50), Matthew Tait (29) and both Morrison and Sam Clark (23) put the red and blacks in a position for a big total of 274. With the ball in hand, things couldn’t have started any better. Alex Hooper continued his standout form, taking a wicket with the first ball of the innings, and the roll continued from there with Temuka in serious trouble having scored seven runs, but with five batsmen back in the sheds at the start of the fourth over. Tech didn’t let the foot off the throttle either, and rattled their way through the line-up, bowling their rivals out for 57. Ryan Bell picked up four wickets from his six overs, while Hooper claimed three. Richard Print and Harry Jones picked up a wicket each.

Mayson goes back-to-back
Bowlers from across the district stepped onto the Ashburton Bowling Green on Sunday for the annual Pairs and Fours competition for this season. A strong field of players assembled for the tournament, which sees players compete in two games of fours and two games of pairs across the day. Methven’s Brent Mayson went back-to-back, having won the tournament last season, but this time did it with a completely different team to what he fielded earlier this year at the rescheduled running of the event. Mayson was joined by Bruce Harper, Bruce Redmond and D. Benson for the event, and the combination emerged victorious, winning five of their six games and claiming a draw in the other. That was enough to see them home ahead of Wendy Suttie, Anne Gibbs, Roger Suttie and Gordon Sparks, who picked up five wins from their six matches. Min Hill, John Kewish, Heather Goodall and Leonie Spargo were third with four wins and a draw while Roger Gutbertlet, Mike Quinn, Pat McElwain and Diane Gutbertlet finished fourth with four wins and a draw also. Pictured above is Russ Ward in action during the tournament.
Off the back of a good season for Canterbury in the NPC, Mid Canterbury’s Dallas McLeod will again slip into the red and black of the Crusaders for Super Rugby Pacific next year. McLeod was one of five mid-field backs selected for the campaign by coach Scott Robertson when the team was announced yesterday morning, alongside the other five New Zealand-based franchises. McLeod, who attended Mount Hutt College up to Year 13 before transferring to Christ’s College for his final year of school, has been a member of the Crusaders for the past two seasons, gaining a number of starts in the midfield last season. The powerful runner, and equally as strong defender, will have to fight hard for starting spots this campaign however, with a star-studded squad of backs including seven All Blacks. In the midfield alone, there’s Jack Good-
hue, David Havili and Braydon Ennor. This year’s Crusaders squad features a number of new names, most notably Argentinian flanker, Pablo Matera, and former All Blacks halfback, Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi. Robertson has a breadth of talent at his disposal for the campaign, with Scott Barrett again set to lead the side with Havili as his vice-captain. The Crusaders will begin their campaign on February 19 next year when they take on fellow South Island based side, the Highlanders, in Christchurch. Crusaders 2022 Super Rugby Pacific squad: Hookers: Codie Taylor, Brodie McAlister, Shilo Klein. Props: Joe Moody, Oli Jager, Fletcher Newell, George Bower, Tamaiti Williams, Finlay Brewis. Locks: Scott Barrett, Quentin Strange, Mitchell Dunshea, Sam Whitelock, Zach Gallagher. Loose forwards: Tom Christie, Ethan Blackadder, Sione Havili Talitui, Cullen Grace, Pablo Matera, Dominic Gardiner, Corey Kellow. Halfbacks: Mitch Drummond, Bryn Hall, Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi. First fives: Richie Mo’unga, Simon Hickey, Fergus Burke. Midfield: Jack Goodhue, David Havili, Braydon Ennor, Isaiah Punivai, Dallas McLeod. Outside backs: Chay Fihaki, George Bridge, Sevu Reece, Will Jordan, Leicester Fainga’anuku, Kini Naholo.
Promising signs for Hawke Cup Matt Markham With their opening match in this season’s Hawke Cup just around the corner, Mid Canterbury continued their strong preparation with another victory on the weekend, beating Canterbury Country by 86 runs. After retaining the Ron Biggar Memorial against South Canterbury in their first pre-season fixture, the baggy green and golds were relentless on Sunday in Darfield, setting a decent target with the bat before their bowlers got the job done in a canter. Mid Canterbury captain, William Southby, won the toss and elected to wield the willow in the first innings, and his top order set the platform. Nick Gilbert – a late call-up into the team through injury – scored a solid 29 at the top of the innings, while Sam Clark added 35

Ryan Bell, seen here in club colours, did the job with both the ball and the bat for Mid Canterbury on Sunday. PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN coming in at first drop. Again, it was the experienced Des Kruger who led the charge, scoring 74 before he was trapped lbw in the 50th over with Mid
Canterbury at 6-196. Strong contributions from Ryan Bell (33) and Satwant Singh (27 not out) lifted the tally, and set a tricky run chase for the
Canterbury Country lads to chase down. While a number of the Canterbury Country top order batsmen made starts to reach double figures, they never really pressed on as the Mid Canterbury bowlers applied the pressure. Bell, once again, showed his talents as a vital all-rounder in the side, taking four wickets from his 15 overs, but quick bowler Harry McMillan was equally as good with the ball in hand, taking 3-22 off 11 as Mid Canterbury rolled their rivals for 150 inside 46 overs. The result is a real positive for the Mid Canterbury side as they head towards their first clash in the Hawke Cup against neighbours South Canterbury early next month – but it will also create some selection headaches for head coach Garfield Charles and his fellow selectors.
In the two warm-up matches they’ve used 16 players, which shows great depth in the squad, but will also require some serious dissection when it comes to settling on the 11 players who will take the field in Timaru for the Hawke Cup opener.

Lewis made a bold effort on the run home, breaking free of his bunch and finding the front with the finish line in sight to take the hard-earned win. Nigel Chatterton produced a tough ride to secure the second place spoils. Don Morrison led in a three-up bunch sprint to claim the final podium spot. Matt Marshall, Brian Ellis, and Doreen Lembke filled the top half dozen placings. Hamish McDonald built on last week’s good effort to claim fastest time honours, riding the distance in 65.38. Tony Ward and Larry Neal took
second and third time respectively. The juniors and division 2 contested a 16km handicap event. Cooper Spillane had a great battle with his co-markers, getting home the strongest to take the win. Penny Marriott, having her first hit-out for the season, produced a top class ride to take second place. Isabel Wall continued her good form with a well-earned third place. Fourth placegetter Conner Toomey claimed fastest time, riding the course in 29.22. Zoe Spillane and Lucy Reeve rounded out the top six. Merv Grewar secured bragging rights with victory in division 2.
