SHOP smart SHOP loca Much more than a Four Square By Daniel Alvey Kim Woods has had a wild ride in the past year as the owner of the long-running Netherby Four Square Supermarket that’s been part of Ashburton for almost a century. Since taking over the business in October last year, and her first business at that, Woods has had to deal with lockdowns and floods but has managed to fight through it and help the community in the process. Woods has assisted many groups and charities, including some local schools, the A&P show, and Relay for Life. During the biblical-like district wide floods earlier in May, the store donated $1000 of food vouchers to a rural charity in Methven to assist those in need. Woods understands how important shops like her Four Square was to small communities, especially in the past year where she said “many people have been doing it tough”. That’s partly why Woods was fully supportive of the Guardian’s Shop Smart, Shop Local – Put Your $ Where Your Heart Is campaign. Woods thought the campaign was important not only to boost the local town’s shopping, but to also highlight the work that local business owners do in the community. Woods said without people shopping locally, “we cannot be here to support the groups and charities that we do”. And the Four Square in Netherby was much more than a supermaket. It was almost an unofficial community hub, surrounded by other small businesses servicing the area. It had been a staple of the Netherby shops for many years, with some staff approaching 30 years’ service.
Kim Woods, has been owner of her first business, Netherby Four Square Supermarket, for just over a year and loves that it is a community hub. Being such a small, tight-knit community, Woods sees a few regulars in her store. “Some come in either daily or weekly. Some even have a regular time,’’ said Woods, who
spent many years in the grocery trade but mostly in supply chain roles before she took over the ownership of the Netherby Four Square. And Woods, just a tick over
12 months in as the store owner, said her team was so in tune with their customers that they knew some of them by the product they bought, which was surely an example of shopping
and servicing locally at its best “There’s a guy that buys value passionfruit,’’ she said. “I don’t know his name, but I knows he buys value passionfruit.”

“The staff are the business.” That’s the message from Ashburton’s Robert Harris owner Gary Lee. He would never just talk about himself when asked about the café and you won’t see his photo in the paper because he reckons it’s not about him. Instead, Lee would rather turn the focus to his 26 staff members. “I always talk about my staff.’’ At Robert Harris, the main ethos for his staff was to provide excellent customer service and high quality food and coffee. While there were 34 Robert Harris cafes around the country, you’ll always receive a local experience at the Ashburton franchise, Lee said. And it’s that local experience that was a key part of the Guardian’s Shop Smart Shop Local – Put Your $ Where Your Heart Is campaign. Lee said the campaign was “really important for Ashburton as a whole” because it was about supporting local businesses and boosting the community. “At the end of the day, as I say to all of my staff, it’s not me who pays the wages, it’s the customers,” he said. “That’s why you always get the best possible service you can get.” Post-Covid lockdowns, they’ve seen the loyal Ashburton customers trickling back and looking to support the business in trying times. Lee said that one lady came in every week and bought a coffee for herself and then paid for another coffee to be given to someone else. “Every week she does it because that’s her way of giving.” And giving was exactly what the café does.
Top team: Customer-focused Robert Harris team members are (from left) barista Kayla Salt, manager Ekta Rani and supervisor Nicole Griffith. After the August snap lockdown, rather than throw away product, Lee took milk and food to the Baptist Church and Salvation Army, among others. While the staff took a lot home
to hand around the neighbourhoods of Ashburton. They have also supported numerous causes such as the Child Cancer Foundation, SPCA, and the RSA, as well as
holding White and Pink Ribbon charity awareness breakfasts. After owning the West Street Robert Harris café for 12 years, Lee could not emphasise enough that his business was all
about the locals and supporting his staff to make their experience so rewarding. After all, it’s customers who really pay their wages, Lee would tell you.

The fallout continues at the Ashburton Club and Mutual School of Arts, with the general manager resigning.
GM latest to go in MSA fallout It was his ‘decision to resign’ – interim chairman MSA meltdown timeline
Daryl Holden Ashburton’s embattled MSA club has had another casualty, with general manager Stuart Geddes resigning. Geddes’ final day will be Friday, his resignation capturing Ashburton Club and Mutual School of Arts’ interim committee chairman, Mike Crequer and his colleagues completely by surprise. “He had actually resigned (handed in his notice) to the previous committee,’’ Crequer said, explaining that his resignation notice was dated October 23. “But we were not notified until sometime after, about halfway through his notice period.’’ Geddes’ resignation continues the management upheaval that has split the revered club, with its executive committee having been dramatically ousted at a special general meeting on November 1. Close to 500 members fronted at that meeting, with unanimous support to remove the committee in the wake of serious management and operational concerns for a club that has been in existence since 1885.
Stuart Geddes Those concerns featured a $2 million budget blowout for the club’s extension and rebuild programme. That rebuild included the creation of the controversial Noble 600 restaurant, which had apparently been a failure because of its fine dining concept and subsequent poor patronage since it opened in June. A long-standing tax issue, including a potential six-figure Inland Revenue Department penalty bill, and the apparent insolvency status of the club’s bottle store were the other big-ticket issues facing the club and its 3800 members. The club’s financial situation was apparently so dire that Crequer had suggested it could have been broke by Christmas had a committee change not taken place.
October 18: Guardian breaks the story about the leadership stoush at the Ashburton Club and Mutual School of Arts, with confirmation a special general meeting would take place to consider a vote of no confidence against the incumbent executive committee because of serious operational and financial management concerns. November 1: The club’s executive committee gets booted out at that meeting in unanimous style, with about 500 The resignation of Zimbabwean born Geddes, who had been GM for just two years, was not necessarily viewed as a setback, according to Crequer. “Not really. No,’’ he said. “It was his decision. “That’s all we can really say on that and good luck to him for his future.’’ Crequer said an interim general manager was unlikely to be
members voting. An interim committee of five gets elected to take charge until the end of January next year. November 11: The resignation of club general manager Stuart Geddes is confirmed to the stand-in committee. Oddly, his decision to resign was formally notified to the executive committee on October 23 but not shared. November 19: Will be the final day for Geddes after a two-year stint as the Ashburton Club and Mutual School of Arts’ GM appointed. But the search for a new GM, especially one with marketing and communication skills, would begin almost immediately, with the goal to make a fulltime appointment before the end of January. Crequer’s immediate focus was saving the club and working through the issues it faced. He said closing the restaurant was not really being considered
and that the bottle store was “going good’’, but he could not comment on whether it had been illegally trading because it could be insolvent. “There have been a few accounting issues that have to be adjusted,’’ he said. “That’s all I can say there.’’
had actually “ He resigned to
the previous committee, but we were not notified until sometime after, about halfway through his notice period.
Crequer, a former MSA club president, wanted to assure members that he and his interim committee were working hard to get the club back on its feet. “It’s early days since we were elected,’’ he said. “We didn’t get in until November the first. “We’ve had quite a few meetings and things. “We are doing our very, very best to keep the club running for another 135 years.’’

Summer school will Pothole peeves councillor after car damaged go ahead BY MALCOLM HOPWOOD
Adam Burns The irony of copping vehicle damage due to a pothole is not lost on Stuart Wilson. But the experienced councillor did not shy away from leveraging his misfortune to further illustrate the hazards that local motorists are contending with at last week’s activity briefings meeting. Wilson, who has previously put Ashburton’s roading expenditure under scrutiny, revealed at the meeting that he had suffered damage on Barford Road near Mayfield due to a pothole. He later confirmed his wife punctured a tyre when avoiding an oncoming car which had crossed the centreline a fortnight ago. Local police have recently expressed concerns that motorists are crossing the centreline to avoid potholes along some of the district’s dodgier roads, including the Mayfield and Staveley areas. “Everyone drives on the wrong side of the road, coming down east on Barford Road, because there’s huge potholes,” Wilson
said. “Luckily it wasn’t a rim, it was just a 20 inch tyre but you don’t get them for nothing.” Wilson pressed the Ashburton District Council’s roading staff on the matter during an update last week. “Are we getting on top of our pothole problems at all? he asked roading manager Brian Fauth. “It really brought it home to how bad our roads are … there
seems to be huge discontent with our pothole repairs at the moment.” Council roading manager Brian Fauth said crews were under way with repairs around the Mount Somers and Lauriston areas, which were hit hard by the May floods. A boost in resource had occurred to tackle the roads with a total of six teams looking after
the 2600km network. “It’s the most we’ve ever had,” council infrastructure services group manager Neil McCann said.
Covid uncertainty is behind fewer numbers applying for the Methven Summer School in January. The summer school, which runs courses from January 6-10, will definitely go ahead even if the South Island remains at alert level 2, co-ordinator Julia Papek said. “Only a level 3 lockdown would see the school cancelled,” she said. “With level 2, we meet all the health and safety requirements to ensure it is safe and successful.” So far, the school has received around 140 applications from throughout Canterbury, compared to nearly 200 at the same time last year. At this stage she said they need more people in the preparing and cooking fish, glass fusing, building a rotary compost bin and singing for everybody classes. There’s been a positive response to cheese, sausage and breadmaking and the upholstery workshops. A final decision will be made on the courses early next month. Papek is encouraging people to take advantage of the summer school’s early bird rate (closes end of November), which reduces classes by about $30-$50.

Santa isn’t coming to town . . . but he will be in Tinwald Jonathan Leask The plans for the Santa Parade and Christmas Market on December 4 have been scuppered by red tape. Organiser Carol Johns had planned to run a Christmas market day along East Street and have the annual Santa parade run along Cass Street. However, having it in the Ashburton CBD was not possible as “there is just too much red tape”. As well as all the usual health and safety protocols, Johns said there is the current Level 2 restrictions to abide by, and if the region moves to the new traffic light system it doesn’t make it any easier. “The restrictions are just too restrictive,” Johns said. “Even if we move to green we would need to monitor vaccine passports and there is no way we can do that in such a big area. “There is no single entry point for the Santa Parade as people can just converge from everywhere, so there is just no way to monitor things. “We can’t run the market day [on East Street] for the same reason.” Instead the market day has been relocated out to the Tinwald Recreational Centre, by the Tinwald velodrome, where they can monitor the access but for
Thompsons Track A section of Thompsons Track between Tramway Road and Ashburton Staveley Road will be closed until November 22. The section of road was closed at 5am on Monday so contractors can install new culverts and undertake road repairs. This area of Thompsons Track suffered extensive damage during the May rainfall event and the new culverts will give increased resilience for future rain events for this key piece of infrastructure connecting the district. A detour option is available using Tramway Road, Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road, Springburn Bushside Road and Ashburton Staveley Road. The work is expected to be complete by November 22.

A scene from a Christmas parade past. Covid restrictions have made the possibility of bulging crowds along East Street too difficult to manage. the first time in over 30 years there will be no Santa parade in Ashburton. “As I cannot run the Hyundai Mid Canterbury Santa Parade, I’m bringing as much as I can to the market day including a visit from the big man himself,”
Johns said. The plan is to incorporate the people involved in the parade into the market day. “Everyone that would normally go in the Santa parade is being invited along to the market day and do their thing there instead.”
Whether a group was organised enough to already have a float to put on display, children they can put on some entertainment to simply sing some carols, Johns was hoping they can still all be involved in the festive event.
Government backs rural driver licensing support programmes Jonathan Leask The Government is committing an extra $600,000 to support driver licensing and education programmes in rural communities across New Zealand and will likely boost the Mid Canterbury Rural Driver Licensing Scheme. Mid Canterbury Rural Driver Licensing Scheme co-ordinator, Wendy Hewitt, said the funding, announced by Rural Communities Minister Damien O’Connor last week, is “great that they see the value in what we are doing” and she hoped similar schemes will start in other rural areas, having recently fielded an enquiry if the Mid Canterbury course could be extended to Dunedin. The funding, provided by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), will be spread over three years to boost the Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) Community Road Safety Fund which partners with community providers to deliver rural-focused

Hewitt said currently they do not receive funding from NZTA but in April, MPI provided $20,000 for the Mid Canterbury scheme as well as other funders including Advance Ashburton, Ashburton District Council, COGS, Mid and
South Community Trust, Braided Rivers Trust and lotteries. Under the programme – a partnership between the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust and Safer Mid Canterbury, up to 24 mainly migrant women who live on rural properties or in small towns are enrolled in a road code course to gain a learner’s licence.
The scheme has so far helped almost 100 people through its road code course since 2018. Hewitt said following the announcement it was good to know that there was now further potential funding available to tap into to continue delivering the course. Increasing access to driver training and licensing is one of the deliverables under Road to Zero, New Zealand’s road safety strategy which aims to reduce deaths and serious injuries on our roads by 40 per cent. O’Connor said the funding will build on the work funded by MPI earlier this year to help migrants in Mid Canterbury to get their driver’s licence and supports the Government’s goal of boosting jobs in the food and fibre sector. “Increasing rural community access to driver licensing training will open up more job opportunities by equipping our rural people with skills sought by many employers. “The new community initiatives will help ensure we have right workforce in our rural communities to drive our economic recovery from Covid-19,” O’Connor said.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is reminding farmers to ensure irrigatiors are not spraying across the highway as the summer season gets underway in Canterbury. As well as being wasteful of water, it can create a slippery surface on a warm, sunny day, NZTA maintenance contract manager for Mid and South Canterbury, John Keenan, said. “If drivers see spray water hitting the highway, slow down and let us know so we can contact the land-owner.” People can phone 0800 4 Highways with the information.
Shearing champs Rakaia’s Tony Coster finished second to Marlborough’s Angus Moore by just 0.87 points in the Canterbury Shears’ New Zealand Corriedale Open Championship final in Christchurch on Friday. Ashburton’s Taare Edwards was third in the senior final and Chase Rattray was also third in the intermediate final. Rakaia’s Shaun Burgess was fifth in both the Canterbury all breeds circuit final and the golden blades final.
Power outage The fatal crash on Ealing Montalto Road on Thursday night caused major damage to EA Networks’ power network on Friday morning. Sixty customer connections in the Carew area were without power after the vehicle collided with a ring main unit, removing it from its foundations. The unit was destroyed beyond repair and a replacement unit had to be installed to allow power to be restored.
Tractor fire The Rakaia, Pendarves, and Lauriston fire brigades attended a tractor on fire on Thursday. They arrived to the property on Somerton Road in Hatfield to the tractor well involved in flames and one male needing a breathing apparatus, a Fire and Emergency (FENZ) spokesman said.
Kitchen fire The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to the Speight’s Ale House mid-morning Friday after the kitchen’s deep fryer caught on fire. When the Ashburton crew arrived, staff had managed to put the fire out, a FENZ spokesman said.

COVID-19 VACCINATIONS
‘Disparities’ in rules as school mandate stings
Covid pandemic ‘will reach Ashburton’
Adam Burns

Mount Hutt College’s principal believes conflicting rules for teachers and the wider school community leaves some question marks around the vaccination mandate for teachers. Multiple teachers in Mid Canterbury are set to put to their careers on hold and school leaders short-staffed as the vaccination mandate for the education sector comes into effect tomorrow. Today marks the last day for educators to have received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine to keep their classroom jobs. School leaders throughout the district have suggested there would be an impact but were reluctant to share specific numbers around vaccine-resistant teachers. Mount Hutt College principal Jack Saxon said the protocols had presented plenty of headaches from an administrative point of view. “There’s a great level of complexity when you start looking at workers and how they’re defined within the public health order,” he said. “That’s incredibly challenging.” Saxon said there was also “a shifting of the goalposts” when it came to how the mandate was applied throughout the wider school community. “The fact that parents can come into schools in their role as parents, regardless of their vaccination status, that students are predominantly coming from the same household as parents and returning there each night. “Yet those same parents cannot support some activities where they would be classed as workers.” “But I’m going to support whatever the legal mandate is because that’s my role, but there are some questions that permeate around that for me.” It has been revealed that parents of pupils at Ashburton Borough School will need to provide evidence of at least one vaccine dose if they want to come into the classroom or meet with a teacher. Ashburton College principal Ross Preece said “a handful” would be implicated. “Some people have made some calls
Mount Hutt College principal Jack Saxon. based on the information out there,” he said. “People have concerns around the Pfizer and they’ve done research based on their individual circumstances.” For staff members who were refusing the vaccine, discussions were occurring as to what their employment entitlements are, Preece said. Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association chair Rebekah Clement said it was a tricky situation for all schools, but they seemed to be managing as best as they could. “Sometimes it’s not until you start going down the process that questions are raised and some grey areas,” she said.

Ashburton doctors say it’s inevitable that the Covid-19 outbreak will reach Mid Canterbury in the next three months. Local GPs met last week and confirmed their belief, based on the government gradual shift from elimination to containment. Covid’s gradual move south continued at the weekend with the virus detected in Taupo on Saturday and Rotorua on Sunday, and was also detected in Tauranga wastewater samples from November 11. On Monday, Ministry of Health officials also say there is a new case in Wairarapa as they announced 173 cases in the community. Spokesperson, Dr Anibal Martinez, said while Covid is restricted to the northern part of New Zealand, it will arrive in the South Island when Aucklanders are released from restrictions and can travel to the South Island. “When it arrives there’s a danger it will overwhelm our health services provided by Ashburton Hospital and GPs,” Dr Martinez said. Before that happens, local doctors need more support from the Canterbury DHB to prepare for the eventuality of Covid-19 spreading here he said. “We want the DHB to front-foot an effective campaign to increase vaccinations and start an education programme around Covid self-care. “The programme will address what it’s like to have Covid in our midst, help people understand what it means and the most effective way family and friends can help.” Dr Martinez said DHBs can also support local GPs with resources such as specialist equipment to help treat the virus. In the meantime, they call on people who haven’t been vaccinated to get the jab as soon as possible by contacting their GP, visit walk-in clinics or pharmacies or go online to book their vaccine. If people are confirmed with Covid and isolate at home, doctors plan a telehealth system or phone consultation to check on patients as often as possible.

FAR going ahead with field day With so many events being cancelled because of Covid-19 restrictions, the Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) is going ahead with its annual field day at the Chertsey Arable Research Site, on November 24. Organiser Anna Heslop said FAR was determined to find a way to go ahead under Alert Level 2 restrictions and had ended up with a plan for a scaled back, half-day event. “We’ve worked out a colour coded ‘bubble zone’ approach that will still allow up to 300 people on site,” Heslop said. “The main difference from previous years will be in the number of talks and how growers choose which ones to hear. “We have had to reduce the number of talks from 12 down to six, and instead of attendees picking and choosing which presentations they wish to hear, they’ll be escorted, in their bubble groups, from talk site to talk site.
“All attendees will hear all six talks and they will all have the opportunity to see all trials as they progress around the site. “It will be a bit different, but we’re all getting used to doing things differently now; the recent, very well-run Ellesmere and Ashburton A&P Shows have proved that with a bit of innovation, worthwhile events can still go ahead for the rural community. “The safety of attendees and our staff is our greatest priority.” The gates at ARIA will open at 9am for registrations, with the first talks beginning at 10am. Early arrival for registration is recommended to allow time for bubble group parking and allocation. Lunch will be provided after the final talks are completed at 1pm, and attendees can choose to stay and eat with their bubble group, or take the food with them.

M. bovis eradication provides lessons for biosecurity response An independent review of the Mycoplasma bovis cattle disease eradication programme has found that it is on track to achieve a world-first eradication and makes recommendations to improve the wider biosecurity system. The review found that the programme, a partnership between the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), DairyNZ, and Beef + Lamb NZ, has made many improvements after it scaled-up quickly to prevent spread of the disease. New Zealand now has only four properties infected with M. bovis – all in Mid Canterbury. Two are dairy farms detected through August screening of bulk tank milk. The other two are a beef property confirmed in September and the long-standing Five Star Beef feedlot case. “We have come a long way since the programme started,” M. bovis governance group independent chair Kelvan Smith said. “The improvements made to the programme have prevented the long-term financial and animal welfare costs of endemic M. bovis in herds. We’ve previously acknowledged the issues at the start of the programme and the independent review acknowledges that lessons have been learned and improvements made as the programme progressed. “There’s no denying the disruption and stress experienced by farmers affected by the eradication programme, and this review will help to ensure we have better systems and support in the future for disease responses,” Smith said. The review panel’s recommendations covered areas focused on responding to animal diseases – all of which MPI and its partners have accepted and are implementing. Professor Nicola Shadbolt (chair), Dr Roger Paskin, Professor Caroline Saunders and Tony
M. BOVIS PROGRAMME SNAPSHOT • There are now four active confirmed properties compared to 16 at the same time in 2019. All are in Mid Canterbury. • A total of 268 confirmed properties have been cleared and nearly 173,000 cattle culled. • 18 farms are under notices of Cleland carried out the review MPI director-general Ray Smith said the M. bovis programme has provided valuable lessons for future disease responses. These were being applied to other areas of work like the Foot and Mouth Disease readiness programme. “The M. bovis programme has already led to changes across the biosecurity system; however, there’s always room to improve and the review panel’s recommendations will help us in the future. “One of the key recommendations is that we all need to work more closely together to ensure the right capability and support is in place for people affected by a disease incursion.” Improvements already made or under way include: • The appointment of a new specialist welfare advisor within Biosecurity NZ to en-

A new chief veterinary officer for MPI to connect the ministry’s vets who practice across a wide range of activities; and build collaboration with the country’s private veterinary network to enhance disease readiness. Investment in a new data strategy to ensure the information needs of biosecurity responses can be adequately met in future. An extensive programme of projects for increasing readiness for a Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) incursion is underway and much of this work is scalable to incursions of less severe impact. Threat-specific plans are in place for some other diseases of concern.
• Work is under way with industry partners and networks outside of MPI, for example veterinarians, to ensure the expertise for preparing for and responding to large scale animal incursion are identified, developed and maintained. • The strengthening of importing requirements for cattle semen. • Completion of the new National Biocontainment Laboratory at Wallaceville, which will enable improved disease diagnostic capability and capacity. • The establishment of a cross government and industry working group to plan the delivery of the review recommendations. Review chair Professor Nicola Shadbolt said the panel considered the evolution of the M. bovis
programme from its start in 2017 to today. “Our review was informed by the experiences of both farmers and those who worked in the programme. We acknowledge the significant impact the eradication has had on farmers and rural communities, as well as those working on the programme. “A large number of people, including our farmers, worked incredibly hard to get to where we are now. Unique tools and capability have been built, which put us in a great position, and we’re on track to be the first country in the world to eradicate M. bovis. “We now need to make sure we capture these lessons learned, improve our preparedness for the next animal health response, have a world class biosecurity system that all players commit to, and that will deliver,” Shadbolt said.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Making an entrance isn’t like it used to be when people were entering and exiting rooms more often, but you’ll find a way to create impact upon arrival even when said arrival isn’t physical. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You won’t have to make room for more love in your life. This happens naturally when you love. Everything adjusts to allow for the flow, and strangely, all seems more spacious than it did before. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Put health and well-being first. Anything you do to promote physical vitality makes life better on all the other levels. It does take time, money and effort, but you’ll get all of that zestfully back and then some. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You’ll be putting a kind of puzzle together, looking at how pieces can be combined to create one big picture. With many puzzles, there is only one right way, but today, there will be at least a dozen. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Television is a form of peoplewatching, though the situations are beyond the bounds of realism (especially in reality shows): People-watching the old-fashioned way will teach you more. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You love when life forces you to discover things about yourself. It’s not happening enough lately, but it will when you take yourself out of the normal setting so there’s no choice but to deal with the unknown. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Social success is just like all the other kinds – learned and earned through failure. When you make yourself vulnerable, no matter what happens, you win. You either connect or figure out what doesn’t work. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): You may feel yourself getting very granular with your demands or expectations, and this is a signal that it’s time to deal in a bigger game. Take on more; expand your reach. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Some relationships you’ve had so long that you can’t even remember the last time you had any kind of objectivity on the matter, but today, you’ll get that with the input of a third party. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You’ll need mental relief from the day’s pressure. Allow more breaks. Take yourself out of the starring role and let your imaginary stunt double step in. Return later to shine in the spotlight. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You’ll love being around people who challenge you, especially playfully. It doesn’t happen every day, which is why it’s so magical today when you dance with your dexterous equal. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): The reason you can answer the call of the wild is because it’s in your first language. Hearing it today reminds you where you came from in the unbridled times.

OUR VIEW
All black and most definitely blue S
o the real questions remain about the All Blacks – and the answers are just as elusive. Cue Rugby World Cup worry. For not the first time in the past few years, our men in black have been physically overshadowed, pummelled and outmuscled by a team playing at a ferocity and accuracy level we simply had no answer for. It happened against England in the world cup semi-final in 2019, it happened again this year on the Gold Coast against South Africa and it was groundhog day all over against Ireland in the early hours of Sunday morning. It was almost a repeat of the 2018 loss to the irresistible Irish, the All Blacks’ third defeat to them in the past five tests. Yes, you could throw up the fatigue excuse, arguing that the
Daryl Holden All Blacks have been in their own bubble for 12 weeks on a tour like no other. And, yes, it’s true we defended like demons, desperately holding tough when lesser teams would have fallen right apart. But if you suggest our defence, courage and character was something honourable to take out of a flattering 29-20 loss, then you really are kidding yourself and you need to check into Specsavers and ditch those rose-tinted glasses. Because this was again alarming. Extremely alarming. We
didn’t get second in this contest. Daylight grabbed that spot and third and fourth and fifth. Test rugby is a physical intense beast. We all know that. On Sunday, only one team fronted in that physical contest and it wasn’t our boys in black. Well, perhaps apart from the impressive Dalton Papalii. Of most concern was that our premier locks, captain Sam Whitelock and Brodie Retallick, were well off the pace. Even more distressing was that coach Ian Foster had no confidence to sub either of them to introduce young second row tyro Tupou Vaa’i when it was bleedingly obvious something had to be tried. On top of that, Whitelock seemed rattled by the referee, the constant chatter to the whistle blower by the Irish. Perhaps all of that contributed to his
brain fade in the 69th minute when he opted for a penalty goal kick instead of an attacking lineout or scrum. Sure, the ABs cut the lead to 23-20 with that successful shot but it was the last time we got inside the opposition’s red zone as Ireland again rolled out their tents to set up camp in our half. We needed to try and string some attacks together to put them under the sort of goal line pressure and tackling duress that we had been exposed to for much of the game. It was a telling moment. But there many of those and many in black who looked a little out of their depth. In particular, the drop in form of second five-eighth David Havili continued. Hopefully the return of Jack Goodhue will solve that midfield issue. TJ Perenara, though fabulous
on defence and at breakdowns, doesn’t have the speed of pass we need from our halfback that a fellow called Smith sitting in the grandstand, after being rushed over from New Zealand this week, most surely does. I could go on and list other positional problems, but if I did that then I’d probably be still writing this tomorrow. I’ll just end with two words. Ian Foster. If his team gets touched up again by France in Paris this Sunday, then the headaches and sleep apnoea issues he probably has now will get a whole lot worse. Foster has two years to solve the physical frailties and find the muscularity the All Blacks need. Otherwise, world cup misery awaits after Ireland again exposed our soft and worrying underbelly.

Holidays – they’re taxing S
o, a few weeks ago my boss in Auckland says, “Hoops, you have a stack of annual leave owing, any chance you could use some up before the Christmas break”? A quick scan of the calendar revealed my answer, Cup Week and YES! I think I will lock this week in each year now, but I will definitely add the following Monday if it’s a big sporting weekend like the one we have just had. As I have belted on plenty of times before, it’s hard enough getting off to sleep the night before returning after a break, without adding in getting up even earlier on the back of getting up early the night before. Of course, I got up and watched the All Blacks in the early hours of Sunday and the Black Caps in the early hours of yesterday morning. That was on the back of a rather large show day, watching the Addington Trots in a local man cave. Normally I’d be saying that was on the back of a rather large Cup Day Tuesday but I very wisely (not sure what happened there) decided to head home with my lovely wife to pick up Maddy from Pre-school and be home in time to watch the big race. We had spent the day at a good-looking local jewellery retailer’s place with a good bunch of locals, enjoying the races and banter. I’m very glad I got up early to watch the cricket but I definitely can’t say the same about the rugby. Full credit to the Irish on their win, they were clearly the better side and should have won by more, but it was an ugly game of footy to watch, not the spectacle I was expecting. I have no doubt Fozzy and the wise
Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR men who select the ABs side, know a hell of a lot more than I ever will but I have some serious questions marks about some of their choices. With Friday 8th September 2023 in mind are they not better off giving Hoskins Sotutu some big match game time now. He looks more like a natural Number 8 to me. He’s taller and heavier than Ardie Savea who I think is at home in the number 6 jersey. The midfield worries me as well. I’m still not sold that David Havili is an international footballer and I think Rieko Ioane belongs on the wing. Quinn Tupaea looks like an exciting player with the ability to bust a tackle and off load, which is what we lacked in the weekend. Savea and Havili will probably have blinders against the French on Sunday now. Till next week Hoo Roo Phill Hooper Couch Selector Phill Hooper is the breakfast host of Ashburton’s Hokonui radio station. The views expressed in this column are his and do not reflect the opinion of his employer or the Ashburton Guardian.

We’re living in a land of confusion – get used to it By Liam Dann NZ Herald
“I
t’s a confusing period,” Alan Bollard, told the Apec CEO Summit on Thursday morning. Bingo. A guy with one of the least confused brains in New Zealand sums up the state of the world in four words. In fact, the former Reserve Bank Governor and Apec executive director has always struck me as the exact opposite of confused. The Oxford English Dictionary says the opposites are: “lucid” and “precise”. I think that describes Bollard’s style pretty well. There was a lot going on at the virtual summit, which was hosted by New Zealand on Thursday morning. Chinese President Xi Jinping warned of rising cold war risk. Superstar lawyer Amal Clooney made an impassioned plea for human rights, we heard from our own Prime Minister, the Australian PM and the President of Peru. The OCED Secretary General gave us an economic update, Helen Clark talked about the disastrous inequity of vaccine rollouts around the world unnecessarily prolonging the pandemic. US comedian and talk show host Stephen Colbert even dropped in to do a few jokes
about the Kiwi accent. But for me, the highlight was hearing a lucid and precise thinker like Bollard acknowledging the confusing nature of everything right now. Contrast that, for example, with the protesters shouting outside parliament last week. They weren’t confused. They were certain they knew exactly what was going on. The same seems to be the case for numerous angry tweeters and Facebookers and online commenters. Ironically, one of the only certainties we have right now is that getting vaccinated will dramatically reduce the odds of Covid-19 killing you. Of course, Bollard was talking specifically about global economic trends. Economists were still struggling to understand this recovery, which was “full of contradictions”, Bollard said. That is very true. There are few economists right now that don’t caveat their commentary with reference to the impossibility of knowing how the pandemic plays out. Vaccine efficacy aside, there is still a great deal of uncertainty about that. We are still learning about the virus, the virus is still evolving. Treatments are progressing rapidly but throw in the wild variability of individual and
collective human behaviour and predicting anything further out than a few days ahead gets fraught. It is a confusing period. That doesn’t mean the commentary and analysis isn’t valuable. People like Bollard are experts. The angry and unconfused don’t like experts. They are certain the experts are all wrong. Personally, I think the many thousands of hours experts dedicate to gaining a deep understanding of specific issues makes their judgement more valuable than mine. So I listen and read. I digest and then I often recycle into short summaries for this newspaper. The best experts concede the world is too crazy for certainty, but they still offer meaningful insight for use in our everyday risk assessments. Bollard did just that on Thursday in a succinct manner which suggests he’s maintaining a well-structured and highly contextualised state of confusion. He rattled off some of those big economic contradictions in quick time. The Apec region was experiencing record growth of 10 per cent, yet just a year ago it was in deep recession, he said. The international trade of goods is booming but trade in services is still stuck in reces-
sionary lows. Domestic investment is strong but foreign direct investment is at 20-year lows. Costs are pushing prices up but central banks are looking through the inflation risk. Wages were going up but productivity is stagnant. Jobs are being displaced but labour shortages are being reported everywhere. The world he described is one at the mercy of big opposing forces. The pandemic restrictions caused supply restraints and inflation that is now crashing into surging recovery demand. But just to complicate things, demand is getting sporadically walloped by resurgent Covid outbreaks and fresh lockdowns. We get counter-intuitive data nearly every day. A survey last week showed New Zealand investor confidence actually rose last quarter. New data revealed that rates of insolvency – firms shutting up shop and going out of business – is lower now than it was in 2019. There were 520 court applications filed for liquidation for the period from January to October 2021, compared to 734 for the same period in 2018, 614 in 2019. PWC’s national leader of restructuring, John Fisk, believes the worst may be yet to come. What we could be seeing is the results of many struggling firms
simply going into hibernation on government support. That may depend on the strength of the post-lockdown rebound – another area of confusion. We know that people like to get out and spend up after a lockdown. But the experience last year, and through the start of this year, was in a Covid-free environment. As BNZ head of research Stephen Toplis pointed out last week, we don’t know if people will be so keen with Covid at large in the community. It’s probably the biggest uncertainty facing the economy in the next 12 months, he said. Toplis wrote that on the eve of the Government’s announcement on reopening Auckland retail. Aucklanders responded by queuing up outside malls to get in at midnight. Ultimately the biggest question remains: when will pandemic end? The answer will be confusing because it will be different in different parts of the world. It will be confusing because the recovery won’t actually wait for the end of the pandemic. That means we should expect more conflicting economic pressures, more turbulence more contradictory data. And we should be wary of anyone claiming they offer certainty.

Mid Canterbury’s horse and dog racing action
The stars of Cup Week 2021 As the curtain falls on another instalment of Cup Week in Christchurch, albeit a different one to anything anyone has experienced before, Matt Markham offers up some of his stars of the week. 1. Owen Patrick Bosson
There’s a saying in racing circles that there is only one Opie Bosson, and it couldn’t have rung truer at Riccarton. The champion jockey was simply fantastic, from his patient win on Noverre in the 2000 Guineas through to his confident ride on The Perfect Pink in the 1000 Guineas a week later, he made few – if any mistakes. I was lucky enough to get the chance to sit down and interview Bosson during the middle of the week, and what struck me the most was how willing he was to deflect praise and play down his own impact on success. That in itself speaks volumes for the man, let alone his ability in the saddle.
2. Craig Roberts
Three New Zealand Grey-
knockout win in the great race was just reward for patience and perseverance for the former local. A strong advocate for the protection of the common greyhound post their racing career, Roberts works hard to ensure he’s providing a safe environment for his dogs, and there’s no doubting that when the big money rolls around, he’s still a kennel that can punch right up there with the best of them.
3. Jamie Richards
Te Akau trainer Jamie Richards. hound Cups now sit proudly on the fireplace at Craig Roberts’ property, and each is just as deserved as the next. But last week was special. Dalisha Bale’s
Four or five years ago, Jamie Richards was a relative unknown in the racing world. The son of renowned industry participant Paul, he was kicking around the traps and doing his thing when an opportunity to take over the training ranks of Te Akau
presented itself. Now there’s 50 Group Ones next to his name, and a record that levels up to any other trainer in the world. A master when it comes to placing his horses, he’s equally as good at ensuring they are cherry ripe for the big occasions, and the scary thing is, we’re really only just getting started.
4. Blair Orange
He might cop a bit of bad press here and there, but Blair Orange is an absolute freak in the sulky. If you take the time to sit back and watch each and every one of his drives during Cup Week, you’ll see someone who gives every horse he sits behind the best possible opportunity to win. It’s like just focusing in on Richie McCaw back in his playing days.
You witness greatness. Yes, the Cup win was simple – but Blair summed it up perfectly and then delivered in style. In a manner in which he only could, really.
5. Mark Purdon
A modern-day marvel, really. After taking a few months off to recharge the batteries, Mark came back on Cup Day and took it all by storm, dominating the card. There’s a lot of quality horse flesh that he gets to sit behind, granted – but you’ve still go to go out there and give them the chance to showcase it, and Mark did that across the week. He’s as good of a driver as he is a trainer, and we don’t really recognise that fact very often. But perhaps we should.
Local jockey credited for his role in Cup Week success Matt Markham He was the hottest commodity of the thoroughbred game during Cup Week, but champion hoop Opie Bosson was full of praise for one of Mid Canterbury’s own, as he basked in the glory of multiple successes. Bosson, New Zealand’s best big race rider, walked away with both Group Ones from Riccarton, winning both the 1000 and 2000 Guineas for the powerhouse stable of Jamie Richards. But he also picked up dual black type success on Wednesday, when he won the Couplands Mile with Markus Aurelius and the Stewards Stakes with Summer Monsoon. And while he was flanked by media to spruik his huge week in the saddle, Bosson took the opportunity to thank Ashbur-

ton’s Jason Laking for the role he played in his huge week. Laking had done all the preparatory riding on both Markus Aurelius, but also 2000 Guineas winner Noverre, and Bosson was quick to deflect some of the praise towards his southern counterpart. “Jason has been a big part of what’s unfolded this week,” Bosson said. “He’s done a great job riding a lot of these Te Akau horses to get them ready for this week, and I’m very lucky that I’ve been able to hop on them in the big races. “Jason is an exceptional talent and deserves a lot of plaudits.” While he watched on as a lot of his usual spring rides picked up big races over the week, Laking didn’t let that stop him from making his own mark in the saddle though. He was one of the form jockeys of the carnival, winning three races and picking up four placings from his 18 rides across the three days. His efforts helped connections of those he rode net close to $100,000 in stake money as well. Laking picked up a winner on the first day of the carnival with Eptimum for John Blackadder, but really came into his own on Wednesday winning two races – both for Ross Beckett. He won early in the day on Treybon, but then picked up his second with Blair Flight in rather bizarre circumstances.
Jason Laking and Ross Beckett after Blair Flight’s win on Wednesday at Riccarton. The horse broke through the barriers before the race and took a light jog down about 600 metres before being captured. Laking was forced to run down the straight to meet the horse, drawing perhaps the biggest ap-
plause of the day from the crowd on course as they watched it unfold on the big screen. The pair were reunited, cleared fit to race by the veterinarian and subsequently won in a head-bobber to the line – drawing an even

bigger round of applause on their return to scale. While he didn’t manage to pick up a winner on the final day of the Riccarton carnival, Laking did score two seconds, with Phelan The Power and Silent Battler.

Hammers falter at final hurdle Cup kings
Matt Markham When it really mattered, perhaps just not quite good enough. That might be the best assessment of the Mid Canterbury Heartland Rugby season this year, after their Bill Osborne Taonga loss to Poverty Bay 3326 in Gisborne on Sunday afternoon. Final reflections on an interrupted campaign will be made by the side this week, and it’s hard to imagine how an element of what might have been might not creep into the conversation. At their best, Mid Canterbury were excellent this season – but some of that promise got lost along the way, and matches which they probably should have rounded out they didn’t. And Sunday was no exception. For the majority of the 80-minute encounter the green and golds looked to have the wood on their rivals. That set piece that’s been one of the talking points of the competition was again sublime, pushing Poverty Bay off the ball at scrum time and causing real headaches when the ball was in the air for a lineout. But the killer instinct just wasn’t quite there. That ability to put the foot on the throat of an opponent and make them pay when it really counted was missing.
South Canterbury is
Ian Kirkpatrick with the Bill Osborne Taonga. A try to Callum Burrell and a penalty and a conversion off the boot of Tom Reekie had the Hammers down 10-13 at halftime, following a rather physical opening exchange. That quickly became 18-10 to the home side after the break, but two long-range penalties from Reekie’s boot kept Mid Canterbury in the match. A second try for the half to Poverty Bay extended the lead and then things went horribly wrong. Adam Williamson, who has been one of Mid Canterbury’s best on the paddock this season, was shown a red card by the referee for what appeared to be a foul off the ball, leaving Mid Canterbury down to 14 men for
the final quarter of the match. Despite that, Reekie closed the gap again with his fourth penalty of the day, but shortly after 14 became 13 when George Williams was sent to the sideline for a head-high tackle. With 13 men against a determined home side with a big crowd behind them, it was always going to be a tough ask for the Hammers. They conceded another try and then a penalty with less than five minutes to go to trail 33-19 and that looked to be the game. A late burst though saw Raitube Vasurakuta score, with Nathan McCloy slotting the dropped goal attempt for the conversion to bring Mid Canterbury within
striking distance, but Poverty Bay were able to get their hands on the ball and boot it into touch to claim the win. And so Mid Canterbury returned home on Sunday night as the sixth ranked side of the competition. It’s a solid result and one the side should be very proud of, but perhaps one with a little bit of a sour taste. They’ll know they could have been better at times, but given the circumstances around this year’s competition it’s still been a mighty fine effort from the squad. Mid Canterbury 26 (Callum Burrell, Raitube Vasurakuta tries; Tom Reekie conv, 4 pen. Nathan McCloy 1 conv) Poverty Bay 33
Meads Cup country after they downed Thames Valley in Timaru on Sunday. The green and black machine have enjoyed an undefeated season on the paddock winning all nine of their matches – most in emphatic fashion. After a really tough and physical opening half of the match, South Canterbury ran away with the game to win 3516 much to the delight of their home faithful. Meanwhile, Whanganui kept their impressive record of silverware grabbing intact by winning the Lochore Cup final at Cooks Garden in Whanganui. They beat another former Meads Cup winner in North Otago 22-16.
* A full look back on the Heartland season will appear in the Weekend Edition of the Guardian.
Allenton setting the pace
Allenton’s Satveer Singh has been making batting look easy in the mid-week competition scoring 173 runs across the opening two weeks.
Mid Canterbury Cricket’s mid-week senior cricket competition is under way for the season, and for one side the runs have been flowing freely. Two Allenton sides feature in the competition, and both are unbeaten through the first two weeks of play – but in varying circumstances, with one fighting hard for competition points and the other making it look easy. Allenton Miyabi have opened up their account in fine fashion, with two huge wins in which they have scored a combined 540 runs in two innings. Opening their season against Coldstream Old Boys, the Allenton side posted an imposing 266-4 in their opening innings, with Karmjeet Singh (83) and Satveer Singh (98) scoring big. They then managed to restrict Old Boys to 103 to claim success. In round two, against the Coldstream Stags, they were on fire again. Gurmeet Singh scored 115 at the top of the order, while Satveer Singh was again in the action adding 75 before he retired. In reply, Coldstream made it through to an impressive 190, with Luc Rodwell top scoring with a century of his own, reaching 112. It’s been a little tighter for the Allenton Progressive Livestock side
– but both their wins have been comprehensive too. They had a first-round win against Methven under the mountains by six wickets, and then a unbeaten 86 opening-wicket stand from Lachie Jemmett and Devon Flannery saw them home against Coldstream Old Boys. Lauriston is the other unbeaten side in the competition with two wins from their first two matches. They picked up a strong win against Coldstream Stags in the opening round of the competition, and then they ran down 78 in their second match against Methven to get further points on the board. Play in the competition continues tomorrow night, with Lauriston hosting the Allenton Progressive Livestock boys on their home ground, while Allenton Miyabi face a trip up to Methven. The third match will see an allColdstream affair out on the Coldstream Oval. All matches begin at 6pm. Meanwhile, South Canterbury cricket action from the weekend was cancelled due to the weather, leaving the second clash between the two Mid Canterbury sides, Tech Stags and Allenton to sit on ice for a while before they meet again later in the season.

TakingIssue Some sports opinions you don’t want to miss
with Matt Markham
Disappointment in Dubai Matt Markham
A
bove all else, Kane Williamson deserved better. While the Black Caps and the cricket loving public of New Zealand will dissect and yearn over what might have been in Monday morning’s T20 World Cup final against Australia, the simplest of takeaways from the defeat to Australia will be raw in the memories of the players. After sitting in the stands and watching their captain turn what looked a meagre first innings attempt with the bat into something more than competitive for a World Cup final, the New Zealand bowling
attack faltered. It was the undoing of the masterclass batting effort from their leader in just a few spells of bowling, as David Warner and Mitchell Marsh took them apart in the middle. There’s no sugar coating it, and no way to argue or debate the fact that one of our strongest weapons choked on the big stage and ultimately cost us a shot at being dual world champions – Trent Boult, the obvious exception to the rule. As Williamson rocked on his back foot and punched Mitchell Starc all over the ground during the first innings, the collective New Zealand hopes soared. In past occasions, when someone has taken such an individual impact on the game the remainder of the Black Caps team have rolled with their punches and delivered in style. But not this time.
Instead, we bowled and offered up half-track, uncontrolled deliveries to two of the greatest punishers in the game, and they stood back waiting gleefully for every opportunity to make us pay. Ish Sohdi, a staple of the Black Caps attack, gave his best impression of someone crumbling under the pressure. Tim Southee was loose and often made to pay – a far cry from his form throughout all of the tournament to that point. While Santner bowled well at times, he never really looked like threatening, instead seemingly attempting to stem the flow of runs in an attempted defensive effort that was off the mark. And every time
the cameras flashed past Williamson, you could see the frustration in his face. Those men who had done the job for him on so many occasions before in this tournament were without an answer. But through the disappointment and frustrations of a clear opportunity missed, there’s still so much we as Black Caps supporters can be proud of. It might just take a
few days for it to actually sink in. Little old New Zealand has once again proved to the powerhouse nations of world cricket that we are a side worthy of mention when it comes to the best in the business. Finalists in all three formats of the game’s world events, giantkillers at the most opportune of times, and a side built squarely on just going out and playing a solid form of cricket without too much of the frilly stuff. It’s just that right now, it’s all a little hollow, as we once again are drowned in the afterglow of a domination from our friends across the other side of the Tasman. Even accounting for the heroics of one of the greatest players to ever wear the silver fern. Captain Fantastic Kane Williamson has had better days, despite top-scoring for the match.
Heney leads the way
Ashburton golfer Nigel Heney has played a pivotal role in helping the Aorangi Masters Men’s team to their highest finish in a number of years at the interprovincial. Heney, who also captained the largely local side, finished the weekend unbeaten, having won all eight of his individual matches across the competition. That effort alone was enough to see him named player of the tournament, a remarkable effort made even more impressive by the fact he was playing as the side’s No.1 meaning he was taking on the best of the best in each and every round. Aorangi finished fifth overall at the event, their best finish in a number of years and while Heney’s individual efforts shone the result was a described as a real team effort. Heney was joined in the team by Jeff Hewitt, Regan Stills, Blair Franklin, Owen Miller and John Smitheram with Andrew Peck as the team manager.

Domigan continues good form Timaru’s Craig Domigan had the final say in a large bunch sprint to take victory in Tinwald Cycling Club’s, Stoked Cycles, Spraymarks, 48km handicap event around the Wakanui Beach block on Sunday. The riders not only battled each other but also wet winter conditions that fortunately lifted mid-race. Domigan and his co-markers worked hard, only finding the front of the race inside the final 5km. This set up a group charge to the line, with Domigan edging out second placegetter Steve Hands in the final
dash. Mark Summerfield stormed into third place with a strong finish. Steve Caldwell was rewarded for a solid effort, taking the fourth place spoils. Domigan also lifted fastest time honours, riding the distance in a quick 65.22. The juniors and division 2 contested a 16km handicap event. Olivia Ewing made it a good day for the visiting riders, claiming the win in the junior event. Charlotte Neal fought hard to hold out the chasing riders and take second place.
Ryan Gallagher produced his trademark tough ride to secure third place, while Eliza McKenzie and Tom Reid rode great races in the tough conditions to take out fourth and fifth places respectively. Sixth placegetter Isabella Inglis recorded the fastest time, riding the course in 29.11. Janette Hooper secured division 2 honours. Next week the club will be trekking to the lowlands of Mt Somers to contest a 45km handicap event, with hopefully better conditions on the day.
