Heartache for
Cancelling surgery ‘not acceptable’, says Meager
HOSPITAL FRUSTRATION
nothing about the staff and the pressure everyone is under, but what is the system we have in place?
“Is it an acceptable standard of care we have at the moment? I’m not sure it is.’’
Postponing an Ashburton man’s serious heart surgery twice be cause of a hospital bed shortage has been called “quite shocking’’ by a key political figure.
The elderly Ashburton gentle man, who the Guardian agreed not to name because of his re quest for privacy, was supposed to undergo a major heart opera tion to remove a benign tumour at Christchurch Hospital last Fri day morning.
But after being prepped for potentially life-threatening sur gery, which included the dis tressing revelation on the day that it would also involve a heart bypass procedure because of blocked arteries, he was told the operation could not take place because of a lack of intensive care unit (ICU) beds. There are only 25 ICU beds at Christchurch Hospital, so after waiting all day the man was sent home to Ash burton on Friday at 4.30pm. He was asked to report back to hospital on Sunday for his likely four-hour operation yesterday but late afternoon it was again called off.
It’s hoped the operation will take place this morning, but the double postponement has left new National Party Rangita ta MP nominee, James Meager, feeling for the man and wonder ing what has gone wrong.
“It’s quite shocking to hear, really,’’ said Meager, who in Sep tember secured the National Par ty nomination for the Rangitata electorate, which had once been considered a veritable lock-in by the party until claimed by La bour’s Jo Luxton in 2020.
“I think that’s going to put a lot of pressure on the gentleman and his family, who have gone up to support him.
“I don’t know what’s gone on up there. Whether or not this shortage of beds is to do with the pressure on staff or whether it’s
to do with the general pressure that the health system is under.’’
But the 35-year-old Meager said he did not think a delay for such an important operation was acceptable anywhere in New Zealand, let alone for a Mid Cantabrian in an electorate he

This latest incident further highlights the pressure being felt at Christchurch Hospital where its under-pressure emergency department (ED) apparently has 16 vacancies for nurses and doc tors, as management works to urgently fill more than 300 posi tions across all its services.
A formal review is apparently also under way after a woman walked out of the Christchurch Hospital ED recently due to long wait times and later died. It is un derstood she waited three hours for her first full assessment after being triaged by a nurse.
Te Whata Ora Health Waitaha, formerly Canterbury DHB, has reportedly about 250 fulltime equivalent (FTE) nursing vacan cies and 60 FTE medical vacan cies.
It’s about to launch a target ed recruitment campaign, even though there’s a worldwide shortage of health professionals.
But Meager’s focus was on the Ashburton man and his recovery from a surgery that should nev er have been delayed. In many ways, its postponement put the man’s life at undue risk.
“I think as a local represent ative, I will be trying to figure out what has gone wrong up in Christchurch Hospital,’’ he said.
wants to stand up for.
“What extra pressure does that put on you and your family,’’ Meager said.
“I think we should be able to expect more out of the health care system.
“And this (his questioning) is
“I understand we don’t have all the resources here in Ashburton, and sometimes we do have to send people up to Christchurch, but it is disappointing to hear that this has happened.
“Obviously, I wish him all the best and hope there are some good services around here in Mid Canterbury that can sup port him.’’

Tanya Dearns is like any parent who takes pride in watching their children achieve their goals, but on Saturday night it went to the next level.
The Mid Canterbury Rugby Un ion boss was in Wellington, along side husband Grant, watching the All Blacks’ test against Japan in Tokyo.
But unlike thousands of other Kiwis around the country, their at tention wasn’t on the All Blacks.

Such was Dearns’ impact that he was named both the test MVP (most valuable player), as well as being awarded the Japanese play ers’ player of the match, which saw him presented with a samurai sword that the Japan rugby side give out after a match.
“He becomes the keeper of the sword and will have his name and the date of the match engraved into the sleeve, which covers the blade. It’s a very cool tradition that the Japanese rugby side has.”
With the Brave Blossoms still in camp as they prepare to depart for their northern tour, Dearns hadn’t
They were cheering on the Brave Blossoms and, more importantly, their son Warner, who produced a standout test for his adopted na tion, including scoring a try early in the second half, which helped ignite the Japanese comeback in their 38-31 loss.
“It was a very cool, and a very proud moment for both of us,” Dearns said.
“I’ll admit to a few tears being shed when he came out at the start of the match, and maybe when he scored that try.
“Like anyone, you take so much out of seeing your children excel and achieve their goals in life and we’re no different, and we’re just so proud of Warner.”
And so they should have been proud, the 20-year-old showing he is quite an athlete.

Both her and Grant are set to fly to Japan in December for Christ mas, where they will get to watch him in action during the start of the domestic season in Japan.
“I haven’t seen Warner play a game of rugby live for over three years and Grant hasn’t seen him play since high school, so it’s going to be really special to be able to do that again.”
As for allegiances when it comes to which sides she can support, Dearns – a former international netball player for the Silver Ferns –said it’s quite simple.
“I’m allowed to support the Brave Blossoms, and anyone who might be playing the All Blacks,” she laughed.

Holmes at Methven board helm
The board then received updates on local projects.
Kelvin Holmes will chair the Methven Community Board for the next three years.
The former Ashburton District councillor, from 2001 to 2010, is in his second term on the board and was the sole nominee to be chair.
“Thank you for the support and hopefully we have a good three years,” Holmes said.
The deputy chair went to fellow second-term board member Richie Owen.
The meeting started with the swearing-in of Alan Lock, who could not attend last week’s ceremony and then with a chair elected, the board got straight down to its business.
The board voted to approve a grant of $1178.50 to Methven Touch Rugby, which was lower than the requested $3948.
Four branded flags and the purchase of a lawn mower were not
included in the grant as Holmes said the items were “not critical” to their ongoing operation.
Mount Hutt College touch team’s request for $7540 was declined as it didn’t fit the criteria.
An application from Methven
Lions to support Methven Bike Club by taking over the maintenance at the bike skills park was partially approved.
The request was for $5164 but as there was no official memorandum of understanding be-
tween Lions and Bike Methven, the board was hesitant to approve the total amount until one was in place.
It decided to grant $2000 now while awaiting clarity on the agreement.
The update on the impending construction of an unsealed footpath on State Highway 77 to the Ōpuke Thermal Pools raised some concerns about where the path was to be positioned and the potential flood risk that will go to the council before the project starts.
“I would rather see nothing than the wrong thing,” Holmes said.
They also received an update on the Methven drinking water upgrade, which is making good progress towards being completed by June next year, and a wastewater main renewal.
The board will meet again on December 12.
Dick Whittington coming to Methven
After more than two years away from the stage, the Methven Theatre Company is back in action for 2022.
Rehearsals are in full swing for their offering of Dick Whittington and his Cat, which will open to audiences between Thursday, November 24 and Saturday, November 26 at the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall. A rip-roaring, in your face and side-splitting romp through the Dick Whittington folk story, the pantomime is a hilarious script full of innuendo and double-entendre.
Director, Richard Norrish, who is being assisted by Donna Topp, said this year’s show was not for the faint-hearted and not for the kids.
“It’s definitely got mature themes,” he said.
“But we know Methven audiences love a good pantomime and this one is full of pace, hilarity and fun – featuring songs from the 70s through to the 2000s.
“There’s enough naughty bits in
there to make your aunty squirm, but enough humour to make your uncle go close to wetting himself.”
The theatre company tried over the past 18 months, on two occasions to put on Snow White and the Seven Dwarves but Covid interruptions scuttled their plans and the show was cancelled both times.
Norrish said the hard-working cast were enjoying the prospect of getting back on stage after the enforced break.
“The show is shaping up really well with lots of fun being had by the cast and crew. We hope people will take advantage of the opportunity to have an adult night out, enjoy the music and choreography and have a laugh with their mates.”
Tickets for the three shows are available at the Ashburton Event Centre Box Office, Topp Café in Methven or by emailing methventheatreco@gmail.com.
Warmth draws the crowds

Blending town, country, culture
year’s show to implement next year? Just a bit of fine-tuning in some departments, he said.
“The horses are ever evolving. We have a few ideas there that the horse committee will consider.
A celebration of multicultural Mid Canterbury and a joining of town and country is how Victor Schikker, president of the Ashburton A&P Show describes last weekend’s 2022 show.
“The weather played its part and the theme of a multicultural Mid Canterbury was a success –the different nationalities made a really big effort with their costumes and displays,” Schikker said.
This was especially evident in the president’s tent where the displays were. The tent is always a feature of the show, he said.
Whatever the president’s chosen theme (this year was multicultural Mid Canterbury) it is displayed in the president’s tent.
“The displays were very well attended. Quite a few had dancing. When that started people came running over to take a look,” Schikker said.
“Ecuador, Columbia, Chile,
Argentina, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Netherlands, South Africa, and the Philippines were some of the countries taking part, Did you know there are 3000 Filipinos
in Mid Canterbury, 6000 in the greater Canterbury region?.”
Schikker said attendee numbers were up on 2019, the last time a full show was held
(pre-Covid) but it was too early for any specifics.
“We are hoping for 10,000 attendees,” Schikker said.
What did we learn from this
“The trade exhibitors made a good effort – although we hope to see more back again next year. Some couldn’t make it due to constraints of staffing. I know one crowd couldn’t come because they literally didn’t have anything to display.
“What are we pushing is bringing town and country together. It is a country event but we like to see townies come and discover it’s not just about big tractors that cost a lot of money, it’s also about what they are for,” Schikker said.
Plenty of town people came this year – there was a good crowd watching the grand parade, he said.
“”Overall the show was an outstanding success.”
Next time al-pac-a some hair dye
to find the best alpaca adult male from those who had won their individual class honours earlier in the competition.
He seemed a pretty chilled dude, up for a photo or two, needing a haircut maybe but don’t ever try patting him on the top of his head.
“Oh, no. He doesn’t like being touched there,’’ handler Sheryl Riddle said, holding Assassin the alpaca tightly by his lead as he tossed his head upwards when I moved in for a pat in between competition classes at the Ashburton A&P Show.
Fair call by Assassin and his head-stroking reluctance. After all, he was there to do the business. Not let a touchy-feely reporter get up close and personal.
Assassin was one of more than 100 alpacas competing in various classes as part of the two-day and
And if four-year-old Assassin looked a tad grumpier than normal at getting the reserve champion runner-up sash placed around his neck, it was easy to understand why.
The judge told the audience that his “inconsistency of colour’’ in his mid-dark fawn fleece stopped him taking out the big prize.
“He had some white fibres running through his hair,’’ she said, big Assassin appearing to throw his head back in disgust as the comments were delivered.
White fibres? Sounds a bit like a grey hair issue for humans. How rude. So big Assassin, who weighed about 80kg, and who had travelled further than anyone in coming from Manapouri, near Te Anau, missed out because of those white fibres.
I guess you win some and you
lose some in those types of events where those tall, fluffy, and cute alpacas, who look a lot like the much bigger llamas, stand around, get poked and prodded by a judge and hold their urges to headbutt officials, and all in the name of impressing their owners and breeders.
“But they really don’t mind it,’’ Riddle said.
Really? Well, not by the filthy look on big Assassin’s face. He looked like he needed some cheering up as I moved in for one last pat, having learnt from my earlier rookie alpaca stroking error.
“Oh, he loves it there on his neck,’’ Riddle said.
“I think he likes you.’’
And why wouldn’t he? An alpaca with taste. Pity that wasn’t a judging factor to take note of for an assassin anyone would warm to.
But please be warned.
Don’t ever try patting him on his head.
Shearing their way to glory
By Pat DeavollComing off a farm, I’ve seen thou sands of sheep shorn over my life time but never taken much notice of shearing competitions. That was until the weekend just gone.
I was at the Ashburton A&P and happened across the shearing pa vilion.
I’ll give it half an hour, I thought. There were a heap of things I had to cover in the interim. But three hours later I was still there, com pletely riveted by the competi tion.
First up was the blade shearing – two heats and then the finals. There were some heavyweights: Tony Dobbs and Allan Oldfield who had represented New Zea land at the World Champs many times – I knew this. Also there was Allan’s son Phil Oldfield who had levered off his father and become the world champ in 2019, the last time the World Champs were held, pre-Covid.
The final was under way and the winner on time was Phil Old field with Tony Dobbs in fourth place. This is when I learnt some thing new courtesy of judge, Stu art Mangin.
“It’s not all judged on speed,” he said.
“There are judges on the board (one for each competitor) who look for “double cuts” where the shearer has gone twice over a piece of the sheep’s wool (this isn’t good).
“Then once the sheep is shorn, other judges out the back will in spect for nicks and ridges in the sheep’s coat.
“So it is the shearer that accu mulates the least points that is the winner,” Mangin said.
In this case, it was Tony Dobbs, whom I kid you not must be in his fifties. So it seems skill can count, but not always youth.
Next up was the junior final and I was so surprised to see that the breakdown was three women and two guys. Lydia Thompson com
pletely blitzed the field! She had also won the weekend before at the Rangiora show.
Lydia said; “Women’s shearing has become a big deal this last couple of years – like women’s rugby.”
Then it was on to the big guns in the Open Category. There was definitely a ramp-up here – they were faster, and cleaner.
The speed was astounding, shearing a sheep in a minute.
The favourite was Nathan Strat
field, former world champion, and for such a slight guy I was amazed he could manage such big burly sheep.
But the secret seemed to be staying relaxed (and the sheep will be relaxed), smooth and fast; that’s my take on it anyway.
So no surprise that Nathan was the winner on the day.
The open competitors plus the blade shearers and wool handlers are all competing for a place in the New Zealand team for the 2023 World Shearing and
It will be a NZ team of six. So it’s a matter of the competitors getting as many competitions in as possible, and accumulating as many qualifying points as they can in the time left.
I’ll give it half an hour, I thought. There were a heap of things I had to cover in the interim. But three hours later I was still there, completely riveted by the competition.

Baby pink tractor draws the crowds
Cancer Foundation New Zealand.
“We got the tractor wrapped (in pink) last year, the colours of Breast Cancer Foundation NZ and it was an initiative we really want ed to take part in,” Peter Whyte of Quigley’s said.
It’s a small Massey Ferguson that we keep using throughout the week, Whyte said.
“How long has the initiative being going on for – about 12 months,” Whyte said.
Apple company, award win ning Rockit Global Limited, is planning for its biggest planting year yet, targeting a further 200ha of trees in the ground in 2023. And it’s tak ing its success story south, to Mid Canterbury.
Despite sharing many of the same challenges as other New Zealand fruit varieties this year, Rockit’s forecast orchard gate return had pro gressively lifted across the year and the company was on track to deliver a record mar ket price. This year more than 76 million New Zealand Rock it apples would be shipped, with up to 160 million apples expected in 2023.
As far as Mid Canterbury goes, Rockit is looking for farms with “fertile, free-drain ing soils with reliable access to irrigation”.
Rockit’s general manager commercial, Tom Lane, said with international demand for the snack-size apple was booming and with new mar kets opening up every year, the apple brand was tasked with finding fresh ways to keep up with consumer demand.
rope) as well as throughout New Zealand’s east coast.
“We’ve already committed 100ha of new plantings across the east coast in 2023, and Mid Canterbury would be ideal,” Lane said.
“We’ve begun the process of identifying some really great, fertile land in Mid Can terbury and some energetic, forward-thinking growers in terested in diversifying their business by growing Rock it apples – and we’re on the lookout for more.”
Lane said the company would work closely with new growers to ensure they were well supported as they put trees in the ground for the first time.
“We’re looking to partner with some truly great horti cultural operators, as well as arable, sheep, beef and dairy farmers seeking new income streams,” Lane said. “There is certainly a massive opportu nity in Mid Canterbury – sta ble weather conditions, good water supply, and the pros pect of growing fruit for our markets across the globe.”
A blushing baby pink tractor might seem a bit of an anomaly, but that’s exactly what was on display, cour tesy of Quigley Contracting Lim ited, at last weekend’s Ashburton A&P Show.
The tractor took pride of place at Quigley’s agricultural display, and offered many great photographic opportunities to the public.
Having a picture taken in front of an unusual bright pink Massey Ferguson was a drawcard. And why wouldn’t it be – how many pink tractors are there out there?
The idea behind the tractor was to raise awareness for the Breast
“The tractor is out working in the paddocks weekdays, but dur ing the weekend we clean it off and bring it along to showcase Breast Cancer Foundation NZ.
“It’s just a gold coin donation that we are after and yes, people have been donating during the show.
“I’ve not sure how much mon ey we have raised, but it is in the thousands,” Whyte said.
“We did a barbecue at Mitre 10 the other week and raised quite a bit of money there.
“The initiative doesn’t have a time limit to it – we will just keep running it at this stage.”
“We take it around the shows but usually it’s out working, but kids are keen to come up and take a photo of it,” he said.
Quigley Contracting Limited has been going for about 20 years. Si lage cultivation, feed sales etc. are on the cards.
“We are reasonably busy at the moment with plenty of silage hap pening,” Whyte said.
Currently, Rockit grows apples in the northern hemi sphere (the USA, UK and Eu

Elderly
This is wrong and distressing on so many levels.
An elderly Ashbur ton man, mentally primed and prepped for potentially life-threatening heart surgery, has been let down by the sham bles that is our health system and, in particular, the facilities at Christchurch Hospital.
Perhaps that should be lack of facilities because the 78-yearold, who the Guardian agreed not to name for his privacy rea sons in our story on page 2, has twice – yes, twice – had his sur gery postponed because of a lack of intensive care unit (ICU) beds. There are only 25 ICU beds at Christchurch Hospital. Just 25.
Read that again folks because that’s a total bed number so low that it almost seems dangerous for a hospital of that size, and of that importance to the South Is land.
The hospital staff, from what our man has told us while wait ing for his heart tumour and bypass operation that was first postponed on Friday and then again yesterday, have been firstclass and that’s usually the way.
Often overworked and under paid, but devoted to helping sick people get better
That’s what our frontline health workers have become known for and, in recent years, while work ing and surviving in the most try ing and unfair circumstances.
The Government will tell you they’re doing their best to ad dress the many issues facing the
health sector and they’ve cer tainly created two new national health authorities.
“Well, so what,’’ say many doc tors, who will jokingly suggest that the only things that have changed are the introduction of new logos for the health author ities.
simply getting worse.
The waitlist for elective surger ies across the country has grown to over 25,000 this year and that’s up from 8000 in February 2020.
Most people know how hard it is to get a GP appointment, with one in 16 Kiwis reportedly not even enrolled in a practice.

Yes, the country’s 20 district health boards have been re placed by national health agen cy Te Whau Ora – Health New Zealand and Te Aka Whai Ora Māori Health Authority, but it seems many health statistics are
In Invercargill, more than 700 women are waiting to see a gynaecologist. Why? Because Southland Hospital’s obstetrics and gynaecology service hasn’t been fully staffed for two years.
Those are just some examples
of a health industry in disarray. Of course, they’re issues that are compounded by a crisis-point shortage of medical profession als everywhere.
So good luck with that.
In the meantime, you and I –and people like the Ashburton man who has cruelly had seri ous heart surgery canned twice because of a shortage of critical care beds – are the real victims.
The solution? Just don’t get sick. The level of care and facili ties on offer could let you down as well.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): As you commit to seeing your situation and your role in it more clearly, you will discover who you are, what you want and what matters deeply to you.
TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): The call is to action swift and sure. Once you have decided, follow through with the whole of you. Hesitate and you’ll lose power. Wait and it will only get harder and harder to influence the situation.
GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Today offers you a free ticket to a different perspective. All you have to do is be willing to check your own way of seeing things outside the door. You can pick it back up on the way out.
CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Your psychic senses tingle today and you are especially aware of people who are in need. What they need and how you may help is harder to pinpoint. Or you could just ask!
LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Your values are different from those of another, but that does not have to be a relationship deterrent. The fact that you have values, know them and uphold them well is extremely attractive and an excellent thing to have in common.

Double delight for Country
By Matt Markham matt.m@theguardian.co.nzCountry Mid Canterbury’s two sides in Tennis Canterbury in terclub made the most of homeground advantage on the weekend to go back-to-back in the opening rounds of the season.
Playing in Ashburton on Sunday morning, both the Division One and Division Two teams tasted suc cess, albeit in very different circum stances with the Division One team needing games won to determine their match-up with Ellesmere.
Jack Tiller was the only player in the Country Mid Canterbury side to register a win in singles action, but success in both doubles matches was enough to get them over the line. Tiller combined with Cameron McCracken for a strong win, while Jason Feutz and Connor Brosnahan were equally as dominant.
With three matches each, and six sets each it was the home side’s 61 games to Ellesmere’s 55 that stood them apart.
In Division Two action it was a lot more comfortable, with a clean sweep against South Brighton.
Pete Leonard, Lachlan Adam, Phil Crozier and Ashton Cromie all picked up singles victories, while Leonard and Crozier combined to win in the doubles and Cromie and Adam did the same.
Both sides have now won both of their matches to open the new sea son.
Much improved Allenton no match for Celtic
players to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
The Tech Stags did what they do best again on Saturday and won, but a much more concerted ef fort with the bat wasn’t enough to help their fellow Mid Canter bury side Allenton get a win on the board in South Canterbury senior cricket.
Chasing three-from-three to start the season, the Stags went to Temuka on Saturday morning and returned home later that afternoon victorious after a com fortable 121-run victory on the Temuka Oval.
Batting first again, they amassed another good total, this week 215 from their 50 overs.
A patient 57 from Ryan Bell set the tone for the innings near the top of the order. He faced 87 deliveries in his inning, hitting six boundaries. Valuable contri butions from Matthew Tait (34) and Ben Niles (32 not out) kept the runs ticking over late in the innings as the Stags went back into the shed having lost eight batsmen during their 50-over stint.
While anything over 200 is usually more than competitive, it’s also still achievable for any side too.
Quick wickets were always go ing to be the key in the bowling innings for the Stags, and Wil
Jemmett provided the goods. Af ter trapping one of the Temuka openers lbw early on, he then claimed another the very next ball to put the hosts in serious trouble.
From there, starts were made, but none continued as the Tech bowlers went to work.
Matt Pawsey did a lot of the damage taking four wickets in just under three overs, while conceding just six runs in an impressive performance. Bell backed up his heroics with the bat taking three wickets of his own from a 10 over spell that saw just 18 runs come from his bowling.
Interestingly though, the win wasn’t enough to keep the Stags at the top of the standings after
three weeks of the competition.
Celtic’s Senior side owns that spot thanks to a superior net run rate, helped by their nine-wicket win on the Ashburton Domain on Saturday against Allenton.
The local side batted first, and after struggling to build an in nings would have felt happy to get through their 50 overs and still have batsmen waiting in the shed.
They scored 182/7 against a handy bowling attack, with a steady 60 from Satwant Singh, who faced close to 100 deliver ies the biggest contribution. But while he scored the runs, it was Tajinder Singh who held down an end. He batted for 110 balls, scoring just 31 runs, but ensured there were opportunities for
O’Reilly claims third national championship
len-trained Riveered in the fi nal heat of the series, all O’Reil ly needed was a top-four finish to retain her title from last year, but she produced a magic and patient drive on the favourite to win the last heat.
With a decent score on the board, the Allenton side took to the field to bowl with high hopes, but they were dashed pretty quickly as the Celtic openers combined for a 100plus run opening stand to wipe out their total.
Just the one wicket fell, cour tesy of Kuljit Deol who removed Tyler Cox for 100 as Celtic cruised to a nine-wicket victory.
The Allenton side will head south this weekend to battle it out with competition newcom ers Celtic A – a match they can really target as one which could provide them with some suc cess.
The Stags are back at home on their own wicket hosting old foe Pleasant Point, in what could prove to be a crucial match early in their season.
Short scoreboards
Tech Stags 215-8 (Ryan Bell 57, Matthew Tait 34, Ben Niles 32 not out) beat Temuka 94 all out (Matt Pawsey 4-6, Ryan Bell 3-18, Wil Jemmett 2-10)
Allenton 182/7 (Satwant Singh 60, Tajinder Singh 31, Mana Singh 27 not out) lost to Celtic Senior 186/1 (Kuljit Deol 1-7).
Laking continues golden run
A spring of fun and success for Jason Laking continued over the weekend, both at home and afar.
Sarah O’Reilly has added an other national title to an al ready tidy list of achievements in the sulky.
The young Mid Cantabrian claimed her third New Zealand Junior Drivers’ championship over the weekend, heading off a strong field of 12 of the best of her peers from around the country in a four-race series held across meetings at both Methven on Friday and then Kaikoura on Sunday.
After wins in 2019 and 2021, there could have been a threat of the novelty wearing off for the talented young driver, but she admitted post the series that it still felt good the third time around.
“It’s just as good,” she said.
The Ashburton-based horse woman put herself right in the box seat for success in the se ries during the opening day on Friday at Methven when she picked up a win and a second from her two drives on the Mt Harding track.
She was a little unlucky not
to grab a win in the first heat of the day with Onedin Hur ricane, who was late clearing a pocket before storming into second, but made up for it when winning on Arizonawild cat later on in the day to take a strong lead in the competition to Kaikoura.
While that lead was com
fortable, she was forced to sit in the stands for the first of the two races at Kaikoura on Sun day due to not enough horses being entered for everyone to drive, but a points allocation for missing out kept her right in the hunt.
With the drive on the Mark Purdon and Hayden Cul
Calling on her experience of driving all different kinds of horses around the country, O’Reilly was tactically brilliant on Riveered, and admitted that being used to driving horses for the first time on slightly dif ferent tracks helped a lot.
“It does help a bit – I have been in a few different situ ations and it does help ease your nerves about driving new horses.
“You get used to all different scenarios, so it does help.”
She added that Kaikoura can be a tricky track.
“You have to be a bit more careful with the right turns, you can’t go into the first turn like you would at a track like Addington.”
With her national champi onship title secured, O’Reilly can now turn her attention to the overall national junior drivers’ premiership for the season, where she has a 22-win lead with two months of the season remaining.
The Ashburton jockey busied him self across meetings in the North Island on Saturday and then at Ashburton on Sunday, picking up three winners for the weekend to continue a great run of form.
He trekked north to Matamata on Sat urday to ride again for the Mark Walker stable, and wasted no time in repaying the faith with a win on Time Flies with a perfectly executed steer.
Then, on his home track on Sunday he was in sublime form, picking up two wins and two placings across the day to take his season total to 13 wins – push ing him close to the top 10 jockeys in the country after three months of the new season. He saluted on Sunday on old-campaigner Camino Rocoso, who was too tough for his rivals in front, be fore Russian Fable also got the job done for former Ashburton trainer, Andrew Carston later in the day.
Laking’s form has him ranked, in terms of wins, as the second placed South Island jockey behind an in-form Samantha Wynne.
He’ll be out to continue the form today at Wingatui at the Otago Racing Club’s annual Melbourne Cup day meeting. He’s got another strong book of rides in cluding leading contenders, Candidate, The Radiant One, Capo Dell Impero and Bauble.
