The Tinwald School principal has been amazed at the reaction received over the weekend to the video of the school performing Tūtira Mai Ngā Iwi for Ruby Tui and the Black Ferns.
The video which was posted on the Ashburton Guardian Facebook page has reached more than 58,000 people and has been watched more than 30,000 times.

this vid. Just like the nation last weekend,” another commenter Jenny Whibley said.
The “spur of the moment” idea came to Livingstone after he saw Tui getting the whole Eden Park
crowd singing after winning the final of the Women’s Rugby World Cup recently.
“We just wanted to send a message from us to the team to show our support.”
The performance of the Black Ferns has started a national movement encouraging many young girls to lace up and hit the rugby fields.
Livingstone said people like Tui, who have worked so hard to get where she is are an inspiraation to the kids.
“There is no reason why we couldn’t have a Ruby (Tui) in our school,” he said.
The team’s success also made an impact at the World Rugby Awards, Tui was named women’s
Tui, Demant, Theresa Fitzpatrick and Portia Woodman were also named in the women’s Dream Team
While Livingstone doesn’t expect anything in return, he said it would mean so much if she or any of the team came out and visited the school.
“We’d stop the school.
“We’d sing to her, and invite her to sing with us.”
I’m really happy with the reaction, but also to see the comments are really nice, former students and parents have been commenting on it

Sweating it out for charity
ness classes to the rural communities at local halls
“For the past six months, we have been running classes in Hinds, Dorie and Westerfield. The main thing is to get farmers off the farms and do a workout.
“As a part-time farmer I understand the amount of stress that is on them.”
A local mobile gym owner has been rallying the community together for charity and mental health.
Recently Rally Point Fitness, run by local trainer and part-time farmer Moses Peauafi raised more than $4000 for Gumboot Friday during a 12-hour row-a-thon.
Gumboot Friday is a charity organisation run by well known mental health advocate Mike King and helps raise money for young people to connect with needed mental health support.
All donations made to the Gumboot Friday fund directly support kids in need.
The event, held at the Hinds Domain invited members of the community to jump on the rowing machines to raise some cash and awareness for mental health.
“We managed to keep one of the rowers for the whole 12 hours non-stop”
Peauafi, who spent 15 years in the military is using his business to promote mental health through fitness, travelling around Mid Canterbury and bringing fit-
Peauafi said they were nervous before the event got under way as they had never done anything like it before. But they had nothing to fear, with Align Farms coming to the party and challenging their staff to get on the rower, donating $2 for every 100m.
Now they’ve conquered their first event they want to try another with something on the way for Movember, due to be held at the start of December.
“We have something in the works, but we’re not sure yet.
“We’d like to organise more events based around mental health and group fitness together.”
Peauafi said fitness is one of “the major pillars” of supporting one’s mental health.
“Life is tough but doing a bit of physical exercise can release a bit of the stress and relaxes the mind focusing your mind on the workout.”
“For me, I always want to be able to run around with my kids, and that can be a huge mental challenge for people.”
Carrfields wins national award
The boss of impressive Ashburton company Carrfields says their New Zealand entrepreneur of the year category win recognises family businesses who are the “heartbeat’’ of the economy.
That’s the view of Carrfields’ managing director Craig Carr after the agricultural company won the Family Business Award for Excellence at the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year function in Auckland.
The award recognised outstanding entrepreneurial families, who demonstrate a successful balance between business and family issues, growing the company and philanthropic or social engagement towards others.
“I think family businesses in New Zealand are important and are sometimes forgotten about as being the heartbeat of the New Zealand economy,’’ Carr said.
“It’s good for family businesses to be recognised from grassroots New Zealand. And if you think about it, most farms are family businesses and a lot of the people who were in the Entrepreneur of the Year Awards were actually family businesses.’’
But none shone as brightly in the New Zealand family section of the global entrepreneur awards as Carrfields, which in its infancy was founded in its earliest form by Greg Carr about 40 years ago and now has about 400 staff, including about 50 in India and two in Australia.
They’re a multi-national agritech company, which has markets across the globe with expertise in delivering products and services ranging in everything from seed, livestock, irrigation, machinery, automotive, wool and dairy to contracting.
And Carr, who has been working in the business since 1997, said it was nice for the family to be recognised together, with brother Ryan Carr, sister Stacey McKerchar, and parents Greg and Glenys joining him at the event.
Only brother, James Carr, who
was on business elsewhere, was unable to attend the glitzy function, which saw the founders of crime prevention and detection software Auror win the big gong and the right to represent New Zealand in the world entrepreneur finals in Monaco next year.
“It was wonderful for the family to be there,’’ said Carr, who back in 2010 also won the product category in the prestigious awards.
“But for me this award has to be dedicated to our parents, who started the business. They gave their children the opportunities to make decisions to help grow the business to where it is today.’’
Those early days began when
Greg Carr started carting small bales of hay for supplementary income while he was working as an apprentice mechanic in Ashburton.
The baling contracting continued to grow, a push into farm machinery and the seed industry followed with the business expanding on the back of the dairy boom in Mid Canterbury in the 2000s. A key moment came when they bought rural servicing company Elders New Zealand, renaming it Carrfields Limited in 2015.
But through all that development, one thing has stayed constant for the business, according
to Carr.
“Our big focus has been how can we continue to provide great value for those farmers, for our farmer clients,’’ he said.
“How do we make their life easier? How do we make them more efficient and profitable?’’
And now you can add how do they make farmers stay healthy and well.
In April, the Carr Family Foundation was launched with a programme focused on rural health and wellness for farmers.
“We take a mini doctor’s surgery to rural events,’’ Carr said.
“We get farmers to come in and get free health checks.
“And we’ve been having huge success with getting people in the door but, secondly, with identifying that some people need further attention.’’
And why should the business drive such a campaign?
“For us, it’s about giving back to the communities that we operate in.
“We decided that, as a family, we wanted to do something that was meaningful and something that we were part of, being the farming sector.
“We can see a tangible difference with this and that’s important to the business and the family.’’
A bond that was formed on the hospital floor
said.
While today you have to have years of training before being allowed through the hospital doors, in 1963 they did three months of bookwork, then it was five days a week on the hospital floor, and one in the classroom.
Have your say on safe speeds
To ensure our transport system protects and helps us to get to the places and people important to us, the way we manage speeds has changed.
As part of our transition to the new approach, we’re developing an interim State Highway Speed Management Plan.
Our plan includes proposed new speed limits on sections of state highways, safe speeds around schools and marae, and other speed related activities.
A class of trainee nurses from the Ashburton Hospital became such good friends during training that they’ve enjoyed regular catch-ups for the past 60 years.
Since January, 1963, the class of 16, now down to nine, come together at least once a year, and only missed the past two years due to the pandemic.
“We grew up together,” group member Joy Hydes said.
“We all went to each other’s weddings.”
Hydes believes the reason they have stayed together for as long as they have was their camaraderie built while training, spending most of their days together, and being able to be there for each other when the going got rough.
“I don’t think a class of current nurses would stay in touch like we have,” Hydes
During their training, the food, accommodation, uniforms, and other living costs were paid for and they even received a paycheck, of 11 pounds and 10 shillings, around $390 in today’s currency.
While that sounds pretty good, there were some less desirable things as well, which included monthly weight checks, and you weren’t allowed to get married while you were a nurse.
While training they would often be left alone to care for patients, something that would not happen today.
Once they left school many retained some form of a nursing career, with the longest serving, Marge Harrison only retiring in 2019.
The group will continue meeting in the future for as long as they can.

Freight hub full steam ahead
The Fairfield Freight Hub will be transformational for the district’s economy when it opens next year.
A sod turning ceremony was held for the $14 million project, a triparty commercial development between the Wareing Group, KiwiRail, and the Ashburton District Council that is planned to be operational this time next year.
“It’s going to help the regional economics of Mid Canterbury,” Wareing Group director Mark Wareing said.
“For Ashburton, it means we can now compete in the future with Rolleston as a business park, which I don’t think you would have said if we didn’t get rail here.”
The current freight terminal in the centre of Ashburton will move north to Wareing Group’s new Fairfield Freight Hub, next to the Ashburton Business Estate, once it’s completed.
Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown said he had been waiting for the project to start for over four years since first getting the call from Wareing.
“Mark had the vision to get the trucks off our congested state highway and put the containers that transport those goods onto rail,” Brown said.
The project ticks all the boxes, Brown said.
“Trucks off roads, shunting yards out of the Ashburton CBD and less carbon in the environment.”
Since the project planning began, the Wareing Group has taken over running the shunting yard in Ashburton and increased the volume from 2000 containers per year to almost 6000.
When the freight hub is up and running, Brown said it will load around 20,000 containers per
year “carrying the produce from the farms and businesses to the ports, something that could not be achieved from the CBD terminal.”
It’s a big boost for the local economy and also the environment.
Moving the containers on rail will see a reduction of around 40,000 truck movements per year, Wareing said.
“As transport operators, we know we have a responsibility to reduce our carbon and for sure this is one way for us to do it.”
Consents are being processed
and once they get the paperwork sorted, Wareing said it will be action stations to transform the site into the new terminal in around 12 months.
Long haul project
“We’ve been on this little journey for a day or two.”
At the ceremonial start of the project, Mark Wareing said it was the result of the first email that was sent to KiwiRail over three years ago.
Before contacting KiwiRail, Wareing had started to look into utilising “heavy productivity motor vehicles” when a chance meeting with Talley’s Aaron Chudleigh had him change course.
Talley’s had purchased the old Ashburton meat works site which had a pre-existing siding,
the ideal spot for a new freight terminal.
“My little job of a couple of million dollars escalated very quickly,” Wareing said.
After some negotiations with Talley’s and plenty of discussion with KiwiRail, the Ministry of Transport, and the council, the plan was in motion but needed the capital.
The Wareing Group are major funder but in October 2021 the Government confirmed a $2.5m contribution from Waka Kotahi’s NZ Upgrade Programme and the council has committed $2.3m.
Rakaia Dump Station open for business
turn around”.
The council invested $160,000 in the project while the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association provided the pre-cast underground concrete unit and signage.
You can take a dump in Rakaia again if you are passing through in a motorhome or caravan. Sort of.
The town’s new waste dump station is operating after the former dump station closed when the Rakaia Salmon site was upgraded in 2020.
Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown said the former site “was not very user friendly” and the council had worked with the community to select the new site with a better design.
Brown said the new site on Railway Terrace is ideally located for tourists and motorhome drivers being just off State Highway 1 and is easily accessible.
Local motor home owner Murray Lister said it was an ideal situation as there is no congestion of traffic making it an easily accessible site “with plenty of room to
The waste station is accessible 24/7 and the dumped wastewater goes into the town’s reticulated wastewater system, and the site also provides access to potable water.
Ashburton’s Lyn Peterson is the chair of the South Canterbury branch, which encompasses the Ashburton District, of the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association, which has around 120,000 members.
She said the new Rakaia site will be well utilised and will be promoted by the association as part of its waste station network around the country.
Ongoing need for action with Ashburton Lakes
By Pat DeavollHundreds of water samples taken from the Ashburton Lakes and streams over the past year confirm that water quality is getting worse, and reinforces that more action is needed.
The results showed mainly negative but some positive changes across the different lakes and streams, Tim Davie, director of science at Environment Canterbury said.
“These are little to medium-sized lakes and streams in the high country, which means results often vary from year-to-year due to climate. However, the results show increasing nutrients and algae, which has caused a decline in water quality over the past 10 years,” Davie said in an Environment Canterbury press release.
“Work is looking to limit nutrients entering the waterways from farming, and long-drop toilets in the small settlements have been decommissioned. However, this could take some time to make a difference to water quality.
“The good news is there has been a real buy-in from farmers to go beyond the regulations to fix these problems, so we think change will go ahead.”
All of the lakes in the Ashburton Lakes area were above their trophic level index (TLI) limit, which meant they were not meeting the outcomes for freshwater health expected by the community.
The amount of algae in the lakes was generally high but there were some individual differences from lake-to-lake.
“It’s good to see Lake Clearwater’s decrease in algae biomass this summer but it’s too early to say if this is a reversal of the degrading trend,” Davie said.
“On the other hand, Lake Heron is showing an increase in algae, with big numbers of algae ceratium, which is very good at out-competing other algae for nutrients.”
Department of Conservation technical advisor Tom Drinan said nitrogen concentrations in streams had risen in the Ashburton Lakes catchment in the last 10
years.
“Most sample sites have seen increases in nitrogen concentrations, with these being very high for these high-country streams,” he said.
“In comparison, nitrogen levels at our site at Paddle Hill have been low during the same ten-year time frame. These worsening nitrogen levels continue to be a problem to the ecological health of these streams and the lakes and rivers they flow into.”

We didn’t know the enemy – but it was downy mildew!
The Marr family near Methven has grown cocksfoot for seed for more than 100 years, but the crop’s viability came under threat after yields plummeted four years ago.
Ian Marr who grows about 50 hectares of cocksfoot each year at Highbank, near the base of Mt Hutt, said the district’s climate suited the crop.
However, for the last four years, wet weather had caused head bleaching with some growers reporting seed yield losses of up to 70 per cent in cocksfoot crops, threatening the viability of the industry in some parts of Canterbury.
“It turned up four years ago. The first year was really bad, but then it was on and off as it was weather driven. It requires moisture and the wet seasons were perfect for it.
“In retrospect, it was in the background for a while,” Marr said.
“Some farmers were having up to 70 per cent losses and the worst we had was 50 per cent.
“It was all about identifying the problem. We didn’t know the enemy.”
The search was on to find the cause of the losses, led by the Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) and the Seed Industry Research Centre.
Late last year, a breakthrough was made in understanding the seed head bleaching problem, when downy mildew was identified as the probable primary cause by Mark Braithwaite of Plant Diagnostics. Braithwaite said that it was probably not sur-
prising that it was a difficult organism to identify.
“It is a species of downy mildew that only produces spores under very specific conditions and they
are hard to detect.”
Water was a key factor for infection during the growing season. A cool temperature pathogen, it was active during cool nights,
dew, and moisture.
Little was known about the life cycle of the organism and its survival, but it was likely to be systemic, possibly moving from the base to the top of the plant in certain conditions.
“We know more than we did a year ago, but there are still a lot of unknowns about this particular organism,” Marr said.
Downy mildew was not a fun-
gus, but an oomycete (like late blight in potato and white blister in radish). While not controlled by many fungicides, other products were now available for its control.
It is a species of downy mildew that only produces spores under very specific conditions and they are hard to detect.

TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Everything you obtain, you have to find a place for, maintain and possibly insure. This is why you think twice before you accept gifts and think seven times before you buy anything.
GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): To memorise a thing is to make it sacred. So you commit to memory not just the verse, the creed, the pledge, but also the smell of a shirt and the feeling of a hand.
CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Your love, as stretchy as sunshine, permeates the environments you touch, floods out the windows and hallways of those places, and extends far beyond your horizon.
LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Speak up, even if you suspect you’ve little influence in the matter. Making the effort will be important to your selfesteem. Whether or not they listen is irrelevant, though you might be surprised.
VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Certain relationships baffle you. You’d be hard-pressed to name their benefits. But at least they present a chance to work on things like conflict resolution, boundary enforcement and taking control of your focus.
LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You’ve grown out of concepts you used to hold dear, though some people around you will hang onto them for life. The clash in ideology doesn’t have to diminish your love, though it will compartmentalise it.
SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): All is not lost, but something is! Whether you pray to St. Anthony, the patron saint of lost objects, meditate on the lost object or retrace your steps, you’ll have a talent for recovery.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You don’t share stories because you like talking. You want someone to witness your feeling and have it with you. Those who can connect over the shared experience are the gems of your personal life.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You’re so good at calming the fears of others because you take the time to know what they are. It’s more than listening. You feel and answer their underlying emotion.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): When others are happy, you are, too. You don’t even have to know them all that well to feel the surge in enthusiasm. You’re a supporter and a celebrator. The world will bring you the reasons.
PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You want to do more for others, but life keeps tempting you inward. Don’t believe it! There’s nothing in you that needs fixing. The fast way to improve is outward-facing. Everything you want will happen through other people.

Carrfields award a very big deal
Stand up for the Carr family and their family business, Carrfields.
Their outstanding triumph in winning the Family Business Award for Excellence at the Ernst and Young New Zealand Entrepreneur of the Year Awards is some achievement.
And it’s one that family members, brothers Craig, Ryan and James Carr, sister Stacey McKerchar, and business-founding parents, Glenys and Greg Carr, should all feel justifiably proud of.
The New Zealand Entrepreneur of the Year Awards are a very big deal, recognising the best and the brightest individuals leading dynamic businesses influencing today’s economy.
They compete in various categories before an overall winner is named to represent New Zealand
Daryl Holdenon a global stage up against more than 50 other countries for the World Entrepreneur of the Year title next year.
This year’s big New Zealand winner were the founders of Auror, a crime prevention and detection software that many of you may not have heard about.
But you will do soon because Auror is helping retailers worldwide reduce losses and assist police to prevent crime.
With more than 80 per cent of New Zealand retailers using the platform, Auror in this country
alone apparently saves our police 200,000 hours annually in investigations. Now that’s what you call making a difference.
But so, too, are the Carrs and Carrfields which, from humble beginnings about 40 years ago, have emerged into a genuine agri-tech powerhouse. They have more than 400 staff, including about 50 in India. They have markets across the globe, offering expertise and services in all manner of rurally based products and services.
But beyond their business success, they also offer something else that sets them apart with the launch in April of the Carr Family Foundation and a programme focused on rural health and wellness for farmers.
What does that look like? They’ve funded what they call
taking a “mini doctor’s surgery’’ van, with nurses and a mental health advocate, to rural events so that farmers can front up and get free health checks, support and GP referrals if needed.
The programme has been held in the South Island this year but will be expanded to the North Island in 2023.
Yes, it’s about branding and getting the Carrfields’ name out there but it’s so much more than that. In many ways, it’s also about showing they care and even saving lives.
You can’t do any better than that.
And
one more thing . . .
A man got this text message from his neighbour. I thought I would share it with you.
Note: A sense of humour
required.
“Sir, I’m so sorry but I have this confession to make,’’ the text began.
“I’ve been sharing your wife with you behind your back, day and night and mostly when you’re not in town. I’ve used your wife in my bedroom, the kitchen and also in your own flat right under your nose. I also have to admit that I use your wife more than you do.
“I felt I should let you know because I feel so guilty about it. I promise never to do it again.”
The man was so upset that, angry beyond control, he shot his wife dead on the spot.
A few minutes later he gets another text message.
“So sorry for the spelling mistake. I meant to write WIFI and not WIFE.”

A master class with the whistle
to flow that must come with controlling a rugby test match.
Matt MarkhamIt’s not often you see a flawless masterclass on the rugby paddock from the first minute right through to the 80th minute, but on Sunday morning in Twickenham, that’s exactly what we saw.
Sadly, it wasn’t a performance from someone in a black jersey and incidentally it also didn’t come from someone wearing the white of England, instead it was someone in a shade of red that more resembled orange – referee Mathieu Raynal.
The Frenchman, who was a late call up into the match to replace another referee, was simply brilliant.
Well, he would have been if we were at the world whistle blowing championships.
Close to 30 penalties were dished out during the match as Raynal played the game to the letter of the law and no further to either side.

Ashburton 9-Hole Golf
And that just didn’t happen.
You could see the frustration from both sides as they wanted to play expansive and exciting rugby but were stymied at almost every ruck and breakdown and forced to pull themselves up off the turf and march back 10 metres, or kick for touch and waltz off to another lineout.
But at least he’s consistent. Raynal is, of course, the man who grew in fame following the All Blacks victory over Australia earlier this year when he blew a free-kick to the All Blacks due to time-wasting by Aussie first-five, Bernard Foley.
So, he’s got form for living by the rule book, you can at least give him that.
Officiating aside though what transpired in that final nine minutes as the All Blacks blew a 19-point lead to draw with the English was almost as disappointing.
It brings an end to a year where perhaps the once untouchable All Blacks lost a lot of their polish and all of a sudden, they are just another team in the pack of handy international rugby sides. And you can’t blame a whistle-happy referee for that.

Turning back the clock
Tinwald Cycling Club stalwart Dave Shurrock turned the clock back several decades when he sprinted to victory in the Stronechrubie, 48km handicap cycle race at Mount Somers on Sunday.
Shurrock recalled the last time he lifted a club trophy would have been in the 1990s.
He and co-marker Liz Wylie worked strongly together to keep the chasing groups at bay on the back country course.
Shurrock getting the nod on the line in a spirited finish with Wylie, who continued her great season form with a well-deserved second place.
Michelle Davidson rode strongly to secure the final podium position.
Tony McManus will be pleased with his efforts claiming the fourth place spoils.
Kaylib Gorrie led the chasing bunch in with a strong sprint to claim fifth place from Leeston regular Steve Caldwell.
Scratch marker Kyle Grey showed real strength breaking clear from his co-maker to claim fastest time honours, riding the course in 64.52.
Mike Pearce and Larry Neal secured second and third time.
The juniors and division 2 contested a 16km handicap event.
Jack Gorrie secured victory on his home course with a great ride.
Not to be out done his younger brother Oscar Gorrie was in the thick of the finish to claim second and complete the Gorrie quinella.
Louie Audeau backed up last week’s good ride with a strong finish to take third place.
Connor Spillane was in fourth place, with his big sister Zoe Spillane claiming fastest time honours, covering the distance in 27.18.
Ange Leadley secured division 2 honours.
Next week the club will contest a 48km handicap event around the Grahams Road block.
New Zealand’s Tim Southee claimed a hattrick but Suryakumar Yadav smashed a blistering hundred to help secure India’s comprehensive 65-run victory in the second Twenty20 International at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Sunday night.
Yadav, the world’s top-ranked T20 batter, clobbered seven sixes and 11 fours in his unbeaten 111 off 51 balls to power India to a commanding 191-6 after being put into bat.
New Zealand were bundled out for 126 with skipper Kane Williamson (61) supplying half of the runs before they were dismissed in 18.5 overs.
After Friday’s series opener in Wellington had been washed out, Williamson elected to field in the second match which was also rain-affected.
India were 50-1 in the seventh over when the players were forced off the field.
The visitors sent in Rishabh Pant (6) to open the innings with fellow left-hander Ishan Kissan (36) but the ploy did not work.
Yadav was irrepressible at the other end, though, playing audacious shots all around the ground and making a mockery of New Zealand’s field settings.
The right-hander raced to a 49-ball hundred but was kept away from strike in the eventful final over from Southee.
Yadav watched on as the seamer conceded four runs in his first two deliveries before dismissing Hardik Pandya, Deepak Hooda and Washington Sundar in successive balls.
It was Southee’s second hat-trick in T20 Internationals having also achieved the feat against Pakistan in 2010.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar gave India the perfect start removing Finn Allen for a duck and Devon Conway (25) departed after a fifty-partnership with Williamson.
Hooda claimed a career-best 4-10, including three wickets in four balls in the 19th over.
Napier hosts the third and final match tonight.
Fortune favours the brave in Timaru wet
see him go there – especially given he’d have to take on the likes of Akuta who raced in the New Zealand Cup earlier this month and also the very exciting Republican Party.
A $35,000 purchase two years ago by John Hay is already paying dividends for the Ashburton horseman and a group of loyal stable clients – and the best is still yet to come.
Purchased from the 2020 Yearling Sale at Karaka, Wheels of Fortune looks every bit Hay’s next very good horse, and he extended an unbeaten streak to four on Saturday when winning the Timaru Challenge Stakes for three-year-old pacers.
After winning two races in his first campaign, Wheels of Fortune went down south earlier in the month and kicked off again with a victory to tidy him up for Saturday’s feature in Timaru.
The son of Always B Miki is raced by Jo Lovett, Nicky Copland and their father Peter Cates who has had a long association with the Hay stable enjoying a lot of success over the years.
Beaten just once when on debut earlier the year the free-going
pacer is still very much the raw product and in a post-race interview, Hay suggested his attitude towards racing made him a good horse.
“He’s been a big horse all his life,” he said.
“But he’s pretty good natured, pretty laid back. He was better today with the half blinds on. He’s not one of those rip and bust type horses. He just gets on with the job. The last 100 is the best
part of his race.”
In horrific conditions, Hay pressed the button early on the pacer to find the front and after staving off an early enquiry for the lead from Blair Orange set about dictating the pace to his own liking and from there it was pretty comfortable.
They cleared away for a three and a quarter length victory.
“He takes a long hopple but he’s a good pace, so the track
wasn’t a worry. The races he’s been in he’s drawn well so we’ve had to lead, but he’s just as good sitting in behind.”
After Saturday’s win, a big decision is now required for Hay and his owners.
They hold a nomination for the Group One New Zealand Derby at Addington next month worth $250,000 but a winning streak of four and all the promise in the world might not be enough to
“He’s in there at the moment but I’ll have to discuss it with the owners. Maybe he’ll be best left for six months.
“He’s pretty green, but he’s improved since I took him down south. His work’s been better, and I’d say he’ll improve this week too.
“You only get one derby and it’s later on this season but it’s hard to race cup horses when they’re green like him.”
Wheels Of Fortune wasn’t the only local horse to salute in the wet at Phar Lap Raceway on Saturday either.
Sonoma Tyron grabbed another win for her career for trainer Patrick O’Reilly and his brother Gerard who handled the driving duties.
The five-year-old mare has now won four races.
Notasbadasilook gave Warren Stapleton a trip to the winners’ circle as well, showing plenty of power in front of Kimberly Butt to win impressively a few races later as well.
Mid Canterbury claim first innings points in Hawke Cup opener
Jones’ heroics highlight a damp weekend in the middle
SHORT SCOREBOARD
Matt Markham
Points are on the board, but there’s an element of what might have been about Mid Canterbury’s Hawke Cup opener against South Canterbury on the weekend where the weekend’s wet weather was in control.
Mid Canterbury claimed first innings points from the match and were well on track to make it full points late on Sunday afternoon when another deluge from the skies forced players off the field.
The green and golds needed 73 runs off 15 overs and when the heavens opened up, they were 34 without loss after just three of the 15 and looking strong.
With Saturday’s first day of the match a complete washout, play kicked off at lunchtime on Sunday with the promise of some rapid-fire cricket. Mid Canterbury won the toss and captain Des Kruger had no hesitation in backing his seamers with cloudy skies above and threw South Canterbury into bat.
An early wicket for Harry McMillan had the visitors in trouble. But they dug in for 12 overs and put their heads down to get through to 19-1 before Kruger made another masterful play. He threw the ball to in-form quick, Harry Jones, and what followed was scarcely believable. The Stags player had South Can-
terbury’s other opener caught behind with his first ball of the match and then snared the dangerous Adam Beck for a duck a few balls later.
Those wickets would just be a part of a golden day for Jones who went on to bowl nearly five more overs, conceding just one run throughout while finishing with a seven-wicket haul for his effort.
The honours board inducting effort tore through the South Canterbury batting line-up and they were restricted to just 33.
Satwant Singh played his part as well, taking 2-10 off his four overs while Jones decimated their rivals at the other end.
With a need to keep things moving, Mid Canterbury took a productive approach out into the
TENNIS GOLF
Country Mid Canty keeps on winning
By Matt MarkhamWinning continues to come easy for the Country Mid Canterbury Division One tennis side.
The local team, competing in Tennis Canterbury’s Sunday senior interclub competition saw off the weekend rain clouds to make it four-fromfour for the season with a dominant victory over Edgeware on the weekend winning all six matches on the court.
Connor Brosnahan and Rhys Cromie and Ryan Watt and Jake Parsons got the ball flying with strong doubles wins, although Brosnahan and Cromie were forced to work hard for theirs, going to a tiebreak which they claimed 11-9 to secure the win.
With two wins on the board just two singles victories were required, but the Country Mid Canterbury team pushed for
the clean sweep and delivered in style with all four players picking up singles wins.
The win keeps them right in contention with the top of the standings with South Brighton Blue set to be just one point ahead of them after the round. The two sides don’t meet until February next year in the 14week long competition.
There wasn’t quite as much luck for the Division Two side who stepped out against the table-topping Elmwood side and were beaten 1-5.
Josh Gilbert continued his great run of form to record the side’s only victory, winning his No.1 singles fixture comfortably 6-1, 6-0.
The weekend’s weather put an end to all tennis on Saturday at the Braided Rivers Community Trust Tennis Centre including the final week of the first round of open grade interclub.
Mid
middle with the bat and while they lost Angus Jemmett early they worked their way through 96 before they declared and asked South Canterbury to bat again.
Devon Flannery grabbed 18 to top score, while young Lachie Jemmett, who was a late call-up, scored 16 at the tail-end to push the score ahead.
Needing 63 just to start building a lead with the day running out, South Canterbury were a lot stronger with the bat second time around pushing through to 135-5 before they too declared to give Mid Canterbury a target to chase.
Wickets were well shared in the second innings with Jones, Tom Innes and Ryan Bell each grabbing a wicket and Singh continuing his good match with another brace.
That left Mid Canterbury needing 75 runs for victory with just 15 overs remaining in the day.
Flannery and Jemmett strolled out into the middle and went to work.
After seeing off the first three balls of the first over, he clocked
10 runs off the final three deliveries. Things were a little more patient in the second with just three runs scored, to have Mid Canterbury at 13-0.
With rain starting to fall, Jemmett really pushed on in the third over hitting a six off the first ball then two fours off the next two balls.
He turned the strike over to Flannery for what would become the final ball of the match and he duly smashed it to the boundary too as the covers came on and the match was called off with 12 overs remaining and Mid Canterbury 41 runs short of their victory target.
While disappointed not to get full points, the first innings result means they don’t walk away from the match empty handed and gave new coach Bevan Ravenscroft and his side a good platform from which to launch for the rest of the season.
Mid Canterbury’s next match will have them travelling to Invercargill to take on Southland on November 17 and 18.
Ko claims major title
RNZ
Lydia Ko has claimed the biggest cheque in women’s golf.
Ko has won the LPGA Tour Championship in Florida which also confirmed her as the Player of the Year.
She pockets $NZ3.25 million for the win.
Ko started the final round in a tie for the lead with Ireland’s Leona Maguire and again didn’t start well with a bogey on the first hole.
She went one ahead of Maguire with her second birdie on the eighth and then extended that to two heading to the last.
Ko finished on 17 under par, while Maguire was two shots back in second with Anna Nordqvist another shot back in third.
Heading into the final event of the year there were four players with a mathmatical chance of earning this year’s overall title.
Closest rival Minjee Lee of Australia finished 16 shots from the lead, while Canadian Brooke Henderson was eight behind Ko and Atthaya Thitkul of Thailand
was nine back.
Ko had three victories in 2022 and recorded 13 top ten finishes.
Her earnings this year were just over $7 million
The 25-year-old previously
won the Player of the Year honour in 2015.
Ko also claimed the Vare Trophy for the lowest scoring average over the season, a title she first won last year.

Harry’s heroics
A seven wicket bag, conceding just one run in more than five overs from Mid Canterbury’s Harry Jones helped his side to first innings points in the opening weekend of the Hawke Cup. But the rain was the ultimate winner in the match.
