Enough is enough for dairy owners as they stand united in a protest against crime.
One of those who joined the nationwide protest was the owner of Allenton Dairy Kumal Saluja. He stood outside his store for two hours yesterday in protest of the lack of action from the Government after Janak Patel was murdered during an armed robbery in Auckland
Two men accused of robbery in relation to the incident appeared at the Auckland District Court and were remanded in custody to appear in December, alongside the murder accused.
“The Government needs to admit we have a crime emergency and take action now,” Saluja said.
Saluja has owned the dairy in Allenton for eight years and his store has been targeted by shoplifters on more than one occasion. Before Ashburton he worked in Auckland where he was the victim of a robbery.
“It was a very scary situation, we shouldn’t have to train for self-defence to keep ourselves safe.
“Being a small business we are often by ourselves, or have our kids in the store.”
Dairy owners like Saluja are calling on the Government to adopt an eight-point plan. This includes admitting the crime emergency, more protection such as CCTV and increased police presence, and more investigation into any crimes.
Saluja said the community is behind his message, with a lot of support coming his way.
“A lot of people have been in tooting and coming up to support and thank me for my work.”
Saluja delivered his letter to Jo Luxton’s office and had a message
for her and Prime Minster Jacinda Ardern.
“Please listen to the outcry of the dairy shop owners, please don’t ignore us. We are part of the community we need your support,” Saluja said.
“Do what needs to be done Prime Minister.”

They’ve got the customers, but none to cook for them. That is the problem facing many local restaurants, as they head into the busiest time of the year.
Noble 600 and Speight’s Alehouses’ Tony Potts has been forced to close both restaurants more often due to staff shortages.
“Chefs are the biggest issue, we are not too bad with front-of -house staff, luckily at the moment all our uni students are here helping out,” Potts said.
Potts is down three chefs, with the remaining five holding the weight of the two restaurants.
“We’ve even tried offering apprentice-style roles with training provided and no luck there either.”
Potts said the industry lost a lot of talent during the Covid lockdowns where they went looking for other careers and have chosen not to return.
“Through Covid a lot of people left and they haven’t come back. We lost one to a butchery and various other areas.”
Before the pandemic, Speight’s Alehouse was open 364 days a year, and now Potts is often having to close for some pubic holiday weekends.
“The last few public holidays we have shut to give our staff that we still have a break and ease them into the Christmas rush.”
Potts said customers may have to be patient during the Christmas period, the busiest period of the year.
“We are so short staffed and sometimes we may turn people away to ensure our service is kept to high standard.”
Potts is not alone in facing staff shortages. The owner of The Fine Lion, Matt Fine, is still down a couple of hands in the kitchen
and also stressed the need for patience from customers.
“We have a lot of new staff and we are down 30 per cent in the kitchen, so we just need people to be patient over the next month,” Fine said.
“Once we get through Christ-
mas it should be better as things calm down a bit.”
Potts is looking overseas for chefs with some showing interest, “but it’s not a quick fix” with any international staff having to battle with long waits in the visa approval queues, with many
other businesses look offshore for staff.
“The government rules are still quite tough with what you have to pay, what may work in the big cities, may not work in a town of 30,000 people in Ashburton,” Potts said.
A new dog park has opened in Rakaia to a round of paws.
The Rakaia Dog Park, which has been in the works since 2019 by Debbie Renga and the subcommittee of the Rakaia Community Association, was officially opened over the weekend.
“In 2019 is when the idea was brought forward. Due to Covid plans were halted a bit, but in the last year we have completed the clearing and construction work on the site,” Renga said.
And in that year, the committee – with the help of local contractors – have turned wasted scrubland into the nicely mown and fenced area.
The park, which is situated on Railway Terrace West, provides a safe space for dogs of all sizes and their owners to run free. The fully fenced area is divided into two sections, one for small dogs and an area for their larger furry friends.
Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown joined Renga with scissors at the ready to cut the ribbon.
“It looks really good and it was a community effort,” Brown said.
“It was good example of local people wanting something and getting it done.”
The funding for the area was mixture of community funding
including a grant from the Lion Foundation and sales of a dog calendar and community events, as well as the Ashburton District Council putting aside $20,000 in the long-term plan.
Now the park is up and running the council will take over the maintenance of area.
But for Renga and her team not all the work is done, with plans
to add more play areas for the dogs including ramps and tunnels and other agility equipment.
Their 2023 dog calendar, which will fund further upgrades is now for sale.

“Don’t turn Ashburton into turtle town,” Grant McFaul said as he told the Ashburton District Council its proposed reductions in its interim speed management plan went too far.
He called the proposed permanent 30kph zones “preposterous”.
The majority of the councillors agreed and recommended electronic variable speed signs be introduced at all schools, but it would come with a hefty price tag.
McFaul supported reduced speeds around schools, but not as the proposed permanent reduction.
“If [30kph] limits were imposed on a permanent basis the council is actually creating a problem, not solving a problem, as it will not be adhered to outside of school hours,” McFaul said.
While many submitters said the reductions went too far, the Ashburton Citizens Association wanted to see the 30kph zones expanded in the CBD, and introduced at other sites such as early education centres, resthomes and retirement villages.
McFaul’s suggestion was echoed by other submitters, against a permanent reduction but in favour of a reduction during specific times at the start and end of the school day, and those sentiments were then supported by councillors.
Roading manager Mark Chamberlain explained the council’s options were either a permanent reduction, or installing electronic variable signs that have a significant cost attached of around $10,000 per sign.
“We only have so much money to spend, and that’s why we have chosen to do the variable signs at rural schools,” Chamberlain said.
Councillor Tony Todd said it was “dumb” to have a permanent 30kph limit outside schools, while councillor Rodger Letham called it “overkill
on a problem we don’t have”.
“We haven’t got a crash history outside of schools, we don’t want one either,” Chamberlain said.
“There isn’t a history of it, but that’s not to say we want to wait for one before we actually do anything.”
The councillors unanimously agreed to install variable 30kph speed signs at the rural schools, as a priority.
Seven of the 10 councillors then voted for variable 30kph speed limits at the schools in urban areas.
Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown said the submissions made it clear people didn’t want the permanent 30kph zones, but the alternative means “there will be cost implications”.
Exactly what the budget implications are and the proposed timing of the changes will be brought before the council once the revised interim speed management plan is adopted by the council before the end of the year.
Methven’s Murray Hawkes has labelled Waka Kotahi’s road to zero campaign as “lunacy” and that a certain number of deaths was acceptable.
Road to Zero is Waka Kotahi’s vision of zero deaths and serious injuries on New Zealand roads.
In his verbal submission on the interim speed management plan, Hawkes cited statistics that the road toll has decreased consistently since 1989.
“We are getting safer and safer roads because of something – probably better cars, arguable that we are better drivers,” Hawkes said. “Certainly it’s not because of increased regulation.”
Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown asked what was an acceptable road death toll figure, which drew Hawkes’ criticism of the Road to Zero campaign.
“It’s not going to work.
“Stop being woke and be intelligent.
“A certain level of road deaths is acceptable because they will happen.
“The figure we have at the moment is actually pretty good.”
The road death toll for 2022 is currently 339, already higher than the 320 in 2021.
Hawkes said signage of the existing speed limits around schools is inadequate, as was the enforcement, and improvements in those areas would be more beneficial than speed reductions.
An all-round top student is how this year’s Valedictorian of Ashburton Christian School is being described.
Angus Tsui, a Year 12 student, said he never saw the award coming and it was a complete surprise to him.
Unlike a Dux award, the Valedictorian is awarded not only to a student who achieves academic success, but also presents good character and is an example of the school’s values.
The award, which can be given to anyone in the senior years of 11, 12, and 13, is not given out every year, only when a student has met the criteria.
Ashburton Christian School principal Tim Kuipers said Tsui had met all the criteria for the award, and was a deserving recipient and an all-round good student who displays the school values perfectly.
“We don’t give this award out every year, so the student who receives it has to be pretty special,” Kuipers said.
Tsui, who still has one year left at school, wants to keep pushing his academic boundaries, with the sciences as his favourite subjects.
“I have a friend who beat me in all three this year and I want to beat him next year,” Tsui said.
He wants to carry his interest in science through into his future studies and career, with aspirations of becoming a doctor or medical researcher.
“It would be cool to use my love of science to help people.”

The Southern South Suffolk Breed Club celebrated a milestone last Thursday when four members of the club were awarded life memberships.
Trevor and Doris McCall, Jim Berney and Stewart Sinclair received the award from club committee member Bryan Brice at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds.
Trevor and Doris McCall’s Myola Stud started in 1978, bought from Mereoak Farm. Later ewes were added into the flock from the Spring Creek Stud.
Trevor McCall said the rise of the Myola Stud was due to an infamous ram after it won the ram hogget class at the Invercargill Royal Show in 1978.
Myola went on to be one of the leading studs of the south suffolk breed, evident by the number of studs that Myola rams appeared in.
One of the McCall’s greatest achievements was winning the Meat and Wool Cup at a Royal Event show at Gore in 1997 with a home breed ram Myola 98/12, described as one of the best south suffolk rams ever bred.
Jim Berney began breeding south suffolks in 1973, founding the Craig Annat Stud at HinaHina, Owaka.
Over the following 50 years Berney had a massive involvement in the south suffolk breed, not only in breeding and farming, but in the administration of the breed at local, regional and national levels.
He was a great supporter of A&P shows. There would hardly be a show that he had missed in the southern region.
He would always have a ute and trailer of sheep present at the venues and much success with prizes and ribbons had been achieved over the years.
Stewart Sinclair’s Inver stud was started in 1972 with the purchase of 10 ewes from Frank Amos. Over the years many other ewes were purchased mainly from dispersal sales. These ewes added to the already impressive Inver South Suffolk stud.
Very quickly Inver sheep were prominent in shows throughout the South Island and the rams and ewes were being sold at the North Island stud ewe and ram fair at Feilding and at the Canterbury stud ram fair in Christchurch.
Sinclair was proactive at buying top sires and the Inver Stud became dominant throughout a large number of south suffolk flocks.
The south suffolk first appeared in New Zealand during the 1930s in response to an overseas demand for leaner meat.
It became a registered breed in 1955 and was increasingly being used as a terminal sire for prime lamb production.
Its high-yielding carcass made it ideal for further processing. The down wool was used for fine apparels and hand knitting yarns.
With less than five months until the South Island Agricultural Field Days kicks off, organisers are putting the finishing touches to the upgraded Kirwee site and still finding room for exhibitors keen to be part of the South Island’s largest agricultural event.
Field days committee chairman Hayden Dorman said that the field days managed to just dodge the lockdown bullet in 2021.
“And 2023 promises to see an even bigger turnout of the latest in agricultural equipment, ag-
ritech and products.”
Since 2021, organisers had doubled down smoothing the site’s network of paved roads, establishing a new water supply, and expanding the electricity grid throughout providing exhibitors with a reliable infrastructure to support their stand.
Dorman said that interest among farmers and contractors on displays this year was upped because of the difficulty many had in past years trying to secure gear and equipment, due to the
global shipping issues.
“With this starting to return to normal, the field days provide an opportunity to really do homework on what the best decision may be, after some of the challenges in the past couple of years.”
He said the site’s easy access, flat contour and central Canterbury location made it equally popular among exhibitors and visitors alike, while the expansive demonstration site was an addition for contractors and farm-
ers considering investing tens of thousands into new equipment.
The organisers had worked hard to keep the event focused and relevant for farmers and contractors alike, something Dorman said had been repaid by having a growing core of committed companies that returned regularly to the bi-annual event.
“They appreciate the diversity and depth of farming and contracting across the region, the field days are an opportunity to connect with their loyal custom-
ers, roll their sleeves up and really talk about the gear they have, the gear they may want, and get to see it all working.”
“Given the growth we have enjoyed in the past, and the strong level of optimism that is in the farming sector despite its many challenges, the field days are a very cost-effective, enjoyable means to tap into that,” he said.
The field days kick off from March 29, running to March 31 and there was still time for exhibitors to book their site at the event.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): The unexpected will happen, and your schedule will seem to laugh in your face, but it’s still better to have a plan not. Keeping track of what’s working helps later.
TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): The abandoned learn self-sufficiency. The neglected develop an inner world. You are grateful for the unpleasantness you’ve experienced because it’s given you your most valuable assets.
GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Something prevents you from doing what you want, but this doesn’t have to stand in your way for long. Think of it as an opportunity to clear obstacles and take back your power.
CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): You’ll invest in a person, company or mission. The benefits will not be immediate or direct, but they will come. In time, this move will bring good fortune from unexpected directions.
LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): When a practice no longer gets results for you, it will be a blessing to move on to trying something else. There are more options than you have time to explore, and you’ll soon be hot on the trail of a new discovery.
VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): An ambitious mood has you overestimating what you can accomplish in a day. So give yourself three. With consistent effort, you will soon hit your marks.
LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Even though the facts seem to point to the same conclusion, it is at least partially incorrect. Something is amiss. Take this apart again. More information is needed.
SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): The best way to get what you want is to ask for it at the right time with a clear, strong voice. Ask with your eyes and with your whole body and being. And finally, get confirmation that your request was heard.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): When you believe the best of everyone you meet, you’re bound to be wrong sometimes. You’d much rather err on the side of spiritual generosity. Most people will rise to your wonderful expectation.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Boredom causes misbehaviour in children, animals and, most notably today, in full-grown adults. You’ll make sure to have something interesting to do that you can include others in.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Skills worth acquiring involve hours of practice. In matters of trial and error, most of the learning will come from the “error” part. As you rack up the mistakes, you improve.
PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You’re supportive of people because you believe in them, but also because your support is a way of showing love. A loved one could really use the vote of confidence today.

I
met him only once at a function in London, but he made an instant impression and many years later he gave small hope to a late friend.
He was a towering figure, standing over two metres tall but he was also the stereotypical smiling rugby giant, being mischievous, charismatic and funny.
He was Doddie Weir, the legendary Scottish lock, who at the weekend died at the age of 52 after losing his battle with the cruel and crippling motor neurone disease (MND) that he’d had since 2017.
MND is a group of degenerative diseases, which cause nerve cells to die. People with MND lose the ability to control the muscles that allow them to move, speak, swallow and breathe.
Weir was told he’d probably be unable to walk within a year of
being diagnosed but he proved that wrong and fought the illness with the same passion he showed on the rugby field where he played 61 tests for Scotland and was given an OBE in 2019 for services to rugby and to MND research.
To somehow last five years with MND was remarkable because medical experts say that, on average, a third of sufferers die within a year of diagnosis and more than 50 per cent pass away within two years.
Well, Weir, who was christened George, beat all that and a delightful quote will always stick
with me because it captured the weight of his personality three years after his diagnosis.
“The only people who I think are upset about being three years in are my trustees [of his foundation],” he joked. “They thought they were only signing up for six months.”
His My Name’5 Doddie Foun-
Many of them would have seen Weir as their MND champion, his relentless energy in fighting an illness without cure being awe-inspiring
One of those followers was a personal long-time friend and tennis coach for my son in Invercargill.
He died suddenly from MND
Well, that worked for only a short time before the disease took hold of my mate’s body and never let go.
Weir, once famously described by broadcaster Bill McLaren as looking like a mad giraffe when carrying the ball, made his final public appearance when his sons wheeled him to the side of the Murrayfield pitch before the All Blacks’ test against Scotland earlier this month.
It was an emotional moment, which nearly spurred Scotland to a famous win.
dation’ saw him raise millions of pounds for research into the disease, with money donated to families who were suffering just as his were. But beyond the money, he also gave hope to others.
in 2020, being diagnosed only four months earlier.
I had told him about Doddie Weir, provided a website link to one of his inspirational videos and said there was always hope.
If anything, seeing Weir looking so frail added to his aura and the worldwide respect he commanded as he fought the good fight to try and beat MND and stop it simply becoming a death sentence.
It’s up to others now to follow the big man’s MND lead. Let’s hope they do.

The Tech Stag bowlers again set the tone, as they ripped their way through Allenton on the Ashburton Domain on Saturday to grab another comprehensive local derby victory.
The sixth round of South Canterbury’s Tweedy Cup saw the two Mid Canterbury sides duking it out for the second time this season, and while the circumstances of the game were different from the first time they met – the result wasn’t with the Stags dominant.
Bowling first, they tore through the Allenton line-up to roll their rivals for just 59 – taking their 10th wicket of the day in the 19th over of the match.
That innings followed the tone of the entire competition for the day’s play, with low scores all around.
Temuka’s 134 in the first innings of their match, which they won against Pleasant Point, was the highest total of the competition for the day.
This time in was Stags’ quick Alex Hooper’s time to shine.
Thrown the ball to open he claimed an impressive five-wickets from his seven overs of bowling in a spell that featured three maidens and conceded just eight runs, two of those coming from wides.
Ryan Bell was also in sublime form too, coming in late – if you can even call it that – in the Al-
lenton innings to take four wickets of his own from just 3.3 overs where 11 runs were scored of his bowling.
Minesh Rawat offered up the most resistance with the bat for the Allenton side, scoring 18 in a 43-ball stay before he was
trapped lbw by Bell, and Satveer Singh pushed through a quick 19 from 19 to try and boost the tally as well before Mana Singh – the only other batsman in the Allenton line-up to score above four runs grabbed 14 near the end. With a small target to face, the
Stags approached a get-therequick approach in their run chase. Jason Morrison grabbed a quick 13, Sam Clark a steady 15 and then Bell (8 not out) and Des Kruger (7 not out) tidied up the match with Allenton helping the cause with 17 extras conceded.
Former Ashburton-based trainer Andrew Carston closed in on a notable milestone in his training career with a red-letter day at Cromwell on Sunday, producing a training treble and two placings from his six runners.
The day started with an emotion-charged victory when Bad Flamingo, a horse bred and raced by Nigel Babbage who passed away last weekend won the Be My Guest Design Maiden.
“It was awesome to win that race,” Carston said.
“It was obviously an emotional win for Nigel’s family and it was nice to get the result for them.
“He came to me from Kevin and Pam Hughes when they retired last year so I was only training for him for a short time but we had bit of success with Russian Fable winning a couple of races too.”
Highly regarded in the finance industry, Babbage was a director of the NZX who had previously served on the Foreign Exchange Committee of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. He was also a passionate conservationist who founded both the South Island Kakako Charitable Trust and Mohua Charitable Trust.
Ridden by Carston’s apprentice Megan Taylor, Bad Flamingo was quick away from barrier two and settled in third position behind the leader before being peeled off the rail and storming home to win by three-quarters of a length.
“He had been knocking on the door, he went really well and finished third on Friday,” Carston said. “He backed up well and Megan rode him outstanding.”
Carston’s second win of the day came in the form of former northern mare Seven Twenty in the Dunedin City Motors 65.
The four-year-old was having just her second start for the stable, the first resulting in a second placing on Cup Day at Riccarton.
Ridden by Kavish Chowdhoory Seven Twenty was settled at the back of the field from barrier 13 and she made winning look easy running down the opposition to score by three-quarters of a length.
“She went super last start and I was pretty confident that she’d run well,” Carston said.
“It was a good result and she’ll be a nice mare to follow.”
Now the winner of two races, Seven Twenty is raced by Terry Lines along with her former trainers Shaun and Emma Clotworthy.
Carston had to settle for sharing the winning honours when Taumalolo dead heated with Leave It To Me in the River Terrace Life-
style 65. Also ridden by Kavish Chowdhoory and raced by Terry Lines and the Clotworthys, Taumalolo settled in midfield from barrier 11 before being sent three wide at the 600m mark and he showed determination to reel in the leaders in the shadows of the post.
“He went really well the first day too, so I was also confident with him,” Carston said.
“He’s a nice horse and he hasn’t run a bad race since I’ve had him.”
Sunday’s treble followed up a victory on the first day of the meeting on Friday where O’Jessica saluted.
Carston, who is sitting on 199 career wins after Sunday’s efforts, said he’s looking forward to summer racing with a good team around him.
Satwant Singh and Ranvy Pannu grabbed Allenton’s wickets. The Stags now hold a 5-1 record for the season as the competition turns to the T20 format this week, with Allenton and the Stags set to meet again to open the season’s shorter format competition.
New Zealand have retained a 1-0 lead over India heading into the third and final match of their one-day international series after game two was washed out in Hamilton on Sunday.
Rain forced the teams from Seddon Park for the final time just after 8pm, ending four frustrating hours dominated by intermittent showers and uncertainty.
India had reached 89 for one in the 13th over when play was finally abandoned, having been sent in by New Zealand captain Kane Williamson.
Shubman Gill was unbeaten on 45 and Suryakumar Yadav was 34, the pair having put on 66 off just 7.4 overs in a lively stand after captain Shikhar Dhawan departed for three, off the bowling of Matt Henry (1-20).
The series decider will be played in Christchurch tomorrow, with India needing victory to square proceedings in the final match of their limited overs tour.
New Zealand will remain the world’s top-ranked ODI side, regardless of the result at Hagley Oval.
final podium position. Frequent Christchurch visitor Quinten Lawler charged over the line in fourth place.

Despite the winter-type conditions on Sunday, a hardy field of riders contested Tinwald Cycling Club’s, Aaron Stewart Memorial, McDonalds Family Restaurant, 48km handicap event around the Grahams Road block.
Brad O’Brien revelled in the conditions, riding strongly with his co-markers to stay away from the chasing bunch by the barest of margins to secure the win.
Estelle Arundell will be pleased with her first start, taking the second place spoils with an equally tough ride.
Basil Audeau led in the chasing group to take his place in the
Scratch marker Thomas Audeau rode the course in 72.03, to lift fastest time honours. Co-markers Tony Ward and Kyle Gray secured second and third time.
The juniors contested a 16km handicap event.
Zoe Spillane was rewarded for a great ride to take the major spoils, securing victory and taking fastest time honours, riding the distance in 27.28.
The ever-consistent Louie Audeau stormed into second place with Cooper Spillane hot on his heels in third place.
Next week the club will contest a 60km handicap event around the Blackbridge block.
The Ashburton College 1st XI will shoot for glory this weekend in the Canterbury 1st XI Cup.
The young side booked their spot in the final against the Christ’s College Development XI this weekend with a seven-wicket win at the weekend, in a match which continued the run of low scoring across the day.
The side trekked north to Christchurch, to St Bede’s College to take on their 3rd XI in the final round of the pool play stage, needing a victory and to keep their net run rate in a strong position to maintain sec-
With six wins from four games, they had a number of sides nipping at their heels –but a dominant effort with the ball set the tone and the AshColl side cruised to victory.
Captain Devon Flannery won the toss and elected to put their hosts into bat, and it proved to be a master stroke as his bowlers went to work and produced some magic.
Bowling at the top of the innings, Jack Middleton and Lachie Jemmett were in full-control mode and tore their way through the St Bede’s line-up, grabbing four wickets each.
Fletcher Hobbs came on late for one over and cleaned up the tail end with a wicket maiden, and then a second wicket with the first ball of his second over.
The AshColl bowlers had the
ball landing on a dime in all the right places, as evidenced by the fact that nine of the St Bede’s batsmen were clean bowled, in a dominant bowling effort that saw the hosts rolled for just 38.
With a small target ahead of them, the Ashburton lads made light work of the challenge.
They did lose two wickets quickly early on, but a 19 from captain Flannery had knocked off the majority of the total, and they made it through to their target with seven wickets still in place.
Finishing the competition with 27 points, they sat equal with St Andrew’s College 2nd XI but a far superior net run rate for the competition resulted in a second place finish and a cup final clash with Christ’s College Development XI this weekend.
allow the season to progress.
Cancelled events and matches and postponements must be a headache to deal with, as now new dates need to be found and organisation needs to be redone.
Roll on summer, anyone?
I’m writing this on a Sunday afternoon, looking out the window and watching rain fall from the sky at a frenetic rate.
I wanted to be outside, doing the local rounds and taking in a bit of live sporting action.
But instead, I’m stuck at home with sport across the district again falling foul to the weather.
It’s frustrating.
But I imagine it’s a lot more frustrating with those charged with overseeing the multitude of sporting organisations in our community.
The ones who spent a considerable amount of time building their season calendars and ensuring events and matches were scheduled to the finite detail to
This is supposed to be summer after all.
The season for getting out with the comfy lawn chair and parking up alongside a sporting field or court and sitting back and watching.
Trying to argue with the weather and make it see sense is futile, I know – I’d have better luck complaining to the wall beside me.
But you can’t help but feel a little down about it all.
Thankfully the wonderful event, the Longbeach Coastal Challenge still went ahead on Sunday morning.
What a fantastic event that has become on the local calendar – a true display of hard work, dedication and passion to give back to one’s community.
I’m looking forward to work-
ing through all the results and bringing a comprehensive wrap to the day’s events in Thursday’s edition of the Guardian.
I sat down to write this with the idea of knocking over a bit of
time before perching up in the chair to watch the Black Caps in the second one day international against India, but I’ve just received a notification on my phone to say that game will be
delayed. You guessed it. Rain. Roll on summer!
And another thing …
There’s been plenty of exciting action to tune into from Qatar and the Football World Cup.
Some heart-warming moments, some excitement and more than a few upsets. It’s been good watching.
But how about the Japanese supporters?
What wonderful humans they are.
After each match of their national side, they grab plastic bags and make their way around the stadium cleaning up the mess they and other supporters have left behind.
It’s not required, nor expected – but they’ve given the rest of the world a bit of a lesson in what it’s like to be respectful and do your own bit for society without expecting someone else to do it for you.
We could do with a lot more sporting fans around the world like that.
