SHOP smart SHOP loca Risky move paying off By Lili Haydon Centipede owner Madi Davis is ready and waiting for the Christmas madness to start and is hoping locals show their support. Davis opened her quality second-hand clothing store in January last year during the pandemic. “It was a pretty risky move.” Sales were ticking along, but following the most recent lockdown in August, Covid-19 restrictions had taken its toll on the business. “Level 2 has changed the way people shop.” She said people were not as interested in shopping due to the uncertainty with Covid, especially since the outbreak in Christchurch last month.

On the flipside, that recent lockdown had allowed people the time to have a spring clean of their wardrobes, so the shop was fully loaded with stocked for months to come. “I have so much stock that I can’t accept anymore. I have heaps of summer clothing for all ages and sizes – so there’s something in store for everybody.” Centipede resembles Christchurch’s Recycle Boutique franchise where people buy second-hand quality items at a much cheaper price. And Davis has all the accessories – sunglasses, candles, and even plants are on offer. Most importantly, her products included the latest fashion accessory – face masks made by local woman,

Janine Kirkby. Davis believed in locals supporting locals like she had with Kirkby, especially after what had been a difficult time for retailers and business owners and with the vital Christmas trading period about to start. That’s why Davis was right behind the Guardian’s Shop Smart, Shop Local – Put Your $ Where Your Mouth Is campaign. The campaign was all about supporting the Ashburton community. “Pop in and have a look instead of going up to Christchurch,’’ she said. RIGHT – Centipede owner Madi Davis. Her risky move to start a business during a pandemic is paying off.

Hard work, a great team and good service are some of the simple secrets to success for Wrights Drycleaners in Ashburton. That’s the tip from Stuart and Neroli Cross, who bought Wrights Drycleaners in 2003. Back then, the business was on Tancred Street, which was where it all began for the company when it was established in 1948. “We quickly started to grow,’’ Stuart Cross said. “So we purpose-built our current premises (Grey Street) and in 2007 we

moved in.’’ Success seemed to follow success. The business continued to grow, with Wrights Drycleaners expanding all the time. They were already part of the Apparelmaster nationwide chain of stores that provides industrial, workplace supplies, and workwear rentals to Ashburton businesses. They also became part of Linenmaster, providing hotels and motels with sheets and bedding, and they have been washing clothes for the aged care industry in Ashburton for over a decade. With product and service expansion came the need to redevelop their building to cope. So, at the beginning of the year, an extension to the Grey Street building was completed, which almost doubled the

Time for Diamonds’ owner Nicola Crossan. “As a shop, we try and support local.’’ “They want to be able to park outside.” But Crossan was optimistic, saying her business was hanging in there and she was grateful for local support. And local, starting with employees and business interaction, was a key word. “As a shop, we try and support local,” she said. The only shop items sourced from overseas were diamonds from Antwerp where 80 per cent of the jewel was traded. Crossan used to travel to

the Belgium city pre-Covid to select the very best diamonds for her customers. But Crossan was very much a local first businesswoman and entrenched community supporter, which meant she completely connected with the Guardian’s Shop Smart Shop Local – Put Your $ Where Your Heart Is campaign. “These times have not been easy, as you’re aware, which is why the Guardian is doing this shop local campaign,” she said.

That employee passion translated to top notch customer service. “We are in the service industry and for my staff their ethos is they are working for the customer,” he said. Cross was also a devotee of the Guardian’s Shop Smart, Shop Local – Put Your $ Where Your Heart Is campaign, which aimed to promote and support local businesses. Many had been struggling after the combined effects of the redevelopment work, Covid-19 and the supply issues of goods. “It is great what the Guardian is doing in the shop local area,” Cross said.

Going above and beyond for their customers. It’s not a catch-cry for Time for Diamonds, but it might as well be. It’s something that Time for Diamonds’ owner Nicola Crossan and her staff live by. “I feel like we go above and beyond for our customers rather than a big box chain store,” said Crossan, who took over the Tancred Street store in 2005. “We like to look after our customers.” Connecting with customers was something Crossan excelled in and loved, with many of her customers also becoming friends. And after entering the jewellery industry when she was just 17, it’s safe to say Crossan knows her stuff. “What I like is that selling jewellery is not like selling a washing machine,” she said. “Jewellery is a lot more emotional.” Unfortunately, she said the “double whammy” of Covid-19 and Ashburton’s extensive CBD refurbishment had a definite impact on her business. She said jewellery was very much an in-person purchase, which was highlighted by having minimal online sales during the lockdowns. Foot traffic around her store during the redevelopment work had also decreased because there were no parks close enough for the need of her mostly older customers. “They stay away,” she said.

College report findings disappoint parent Adam Burns

An investigation has cleared an Ashburton College teacher of bullying allegations, but it has shocked a parent who withdrew her child from the school. Melanie Deuart, who had complained to school leaders twice, pulled her autistic son out of the college at the start of the term after she understood the extent of multiple allegations surrounding a special needs’ unit teacher. The teacher, who the Guardian decided not to name even after being cleared of any wrongdoing, had been the subject of multiple claims of bullying towards students and staff in the Te Whare Manaaki student learning support unit, stretching back until at least 2019. “I just think it (investigation report findings) is a big joke,” said

Deuart, who was interviewed as part of the investigation but had not seen the report and was not informed of its findings. Ashburton College principal Ross Preece said the report could not be disclosed due to privacy. He also would not respond to further questions around both the investigation and Deuart’s concerns. The college had commissioned an investigative report because Preece said there had been concerns raised about the special needs learning unit. Preece, in a prepared written statement, said the report proved that none of the allegations had been upheld. “In term two of 2021, Ashburton College received a complaint regarding allegations of staff bul-

lying within Te Whare Manaaki,’’ Preece’s statement said. “The college instigated a comprehensive independent investigation into the complaint, which has now been completed. “Due to privacy reasons, the investigation report cannot be disclosed. However, the investigation has highlighted that whilst there have been some working relationship issues identified between the staff in Te Whare Manaaki, none of the allegations of bullying were upheld. “The college is committed to continuing to provide its students, staff and whanau a safe, supportive learning and working environment.” Deuart first became concerned during a visiting day in

November 2020 where she allegedly saw the teacher grab her son’s hand and squeeze it “violently” until he answered her. The mother’s second complaint came after indications from her son that the teacher may have encouraged him to “keep secrets”. A former teacher aide Porsha Coley also said she had witnessed what she considered physical and emotional abuse toward pupils from a teacher in the school’s Te Whare Manaaki unit. She left earlier in the year because she was fed up with the alleged inaction from school leaders around the unit. Emails obtained by the Guardian dating back to 2019 also detailed other concerns from staff members.

SHORT & SHARP Fatal crash A person died after a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian on State Highway 1 in Rakaia on Saturday morning. The incident occurred at around 6.30am on Saturday on SH1 between Chertsey Line Road and Pendarves Rakaia Road. The road was closed for several hours as the Serious Crash Unit conducted an examination of the scene. An investigation into the circumstances of the fatal crash is ongoing.

Shearing success Ashburton’s Taare Edwards, Chase Rattray, and Methven’s Toko Hapuku all won their respective shearing finals at Pleasant Point’s Gymkhana Shears on Saturday. New Open competitor Hapuku won the Open Plate, Edwards had his second win and fourth top-two placing in five senior events this season, and Rattray had his first Intermediate win of the season and his third overall.

Tyre fire A pile of around 30 tyres and gorse occupying around 2000 square metres caught fire on Mitcham Road around midday on Saturday. Crews from Ashburton and Lauriston attended the scene and were able to extinguish the fire quickly.

Driver stands trial over crash that killed two sisters By Kurt Bayer/NZME One of two sisters killed in a crash on the Port Hills above Christchurch messaged a friend just seconds before the fatal accident to say, “Bro I’m going to die tonight”, adding, “Haven’t gone so fast around Port Hills before”. Teenager driver Levi Fiddymont says the brakes on his Subaru WRX failed that night, while the Crown says he was driving too fast. Tayla Alexander, 17, died and her sister Sunmara, 15, suffered critical injuries in the crash on Summit Road in Christchurch on November 27, 2019. Sunmara, an Ashburton College student, died later in hospital on December 13 on her 16th birthday. She had suffered extensive burns after the car’s fuel tank ruptured and the battle to save her had meant multiple amputations due to infections. A teenage boy who was also a

passenger suffered serious injuries and survived. Fiddymont, now 21, denies two counts of dangerous driving causing death, as well as one charge of dangerous driving causing injury. A jury trial, which is expected to take up to four days, began at Christchurch District Court on Monday. In an opening address yesterday, Crown prosecutor Sophie Bicknell said there was no evidence of brake failure on Fiddymont’s 2011 Subaru WRX. The court heard that Tayla sent a text message to her best friend moments before the fatal crash to say, “Bro I’m going to die tonight”. When her friend messaged straight back to ask why, Tayla replied at 10.54pm: “Haven’t gone so fast around Port Hills before”. “Omg Tayla!!!!” her friend replied. A minute later, at around 10.55pm, Fiddymont was doing

approximately 110kph, the Crown says, when he came to a moderate S-bend. Because of his speed, Bicknell said he failed to negotiate the first bend and the car crossed the centreline before crashing into the steep rock back. The car spun anti-clockwise down the bank on the other side and Tayla, who may not have been wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the backseat. She struck a steel roadside barrier and landed 28m away, dying from massive head injuries. The car came to rest 3m down the bank and Fiddymont and the male passenger managed to get out. But Sunmara, who was seriously injured, was trapped inside the vehicle. It caught fire when the fuel tank ruptured and she received significant burns before emergency services could rescue her, the court heard. The male passenger, who broke

his collarbone, ruptured his spleen, and had a brain bleed, has no recollection of the crash. It was a “tragic accident”, Bicknell said, but caused by Fiddymont’s driving. His lawyer, Andrew McCormick acknowledged the “absolute tragedy” of the accident and the harm and sorrow it has caused the Alexander family. Fiddymont “carries a huge load”, McCormick said, as he will always live with the knowledge that he was the driver of a car which caused the loss of the two young lives. He wasn’t driving dangerously, the lawyer told the jury, and told people straight after the crash that his brakes had failed. Fiddymont, who says he was doing about 65-70kph at the time of the crash, not 110kph as the Crown says, said he pumped his brakes coming down the hill but there was nothing there. He says he tried to use his hand-

brake to slow down. In a police interview, Fiddymont later told police he was aware of the possibility of something called “brake fade” when driving in hills. It’s up to the Crown to prove that his brakes didn’t fail, McCormick told the jury. And he stressed to the jury to be careful about how they interpret Tayla’s text message. The trial, before Judge Paul Kellar, continues. The girls’ father Jason Alexander’s last words to his only children were: “I love you and be good.” He had left the family’s Ashburton home to see his partner. The girls then snuck out of the house and headed towards Christchurch. Alexander had raised his daughters on his own since their mother moved to Australia 11 years before. He said the sisters were extremely close but had different personalities.

Longbeach Coastal Challenge postponed Malcolm Hopwood The 15th annual Longbeach Coastal Challenge has been postponed until next year. The event was due to be held on November 28, but because of Covid-19 it has been delayed for 12 months. Bruce Kell, a member of the Longbeach Coastal Challenge committee, was hoping the South Island would return to Level 1 this month, but with the Level 2 restrictions, “we couldn’t get it to work”. “Because it’s such a family event, we wanted everyone to take part and enjoy the presentations afterwards,” he said. “We also considered an early date in 2022, but it would clash with other planned summer and autumn events.” He said the 15th anniversary was going to be special and it was best to postpone it until November 27, 2022. In previous years the coastal challenge has attracted up to 1300 competitors, taking part in a range of events from the five kilometre walk to the 35 kilometre bike ride.

Longbeach Coastal Challenge committee member, Bruce Kell. “It became very popular in the local calendar and we raised considerable funds, split between Longbeach School and the Hinds Lions Charitable Trust.

“We regret making the decision, but it’s all on for 2022,” Kell said. The Longbeach Coastal Challenge started as a mountainbike

only event in 2007 and has grown to incorporate run and walk events through the picturesque Longbeach Estate. The 2020 event raised $13,000.

Turn handle, jiggle the horses

An early childhood racing game has been rediscovered to coincide with the New Zealand Trotting Cup. Methven Museum opens its Christmas of Days Gone By exhibition this afternoon at 2pm with a horse racing game as one of its main attractions. It’s called Escalado, first produced in England in 1928, and is a game on canvas for children. A member of the Methven Historical Society, Sandy Redmond, said it works by turning a handle which jiggles five lead horses along the canvas from one end to the other. “Escalado was popular in its day and an example was recently taken to the TV show, The Repair Game, to be brought back to life,” she said. The festive display is in its second year at the Methven Museum and “encourages children to come and experience a new aspect of Christmas”. In the past, many youngsters received an orange, a penny bag of sweets, some nuts and a small toy at Christmas and Methven Museum has sought to recreate the bygone era. As well as Escalado, organisers have dusted off old toys, games and books. There are Fun-ho trucks, marbles, dolls, scrapbooks collected by Methven identities, the History of the Plum Pudding and wooden blocks. “Children can make an evergreen decoration, Christmas card or answer a Christmas quiz,” Redmond said. The museum is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2-4pm.

Young Farmer finalists found The finalists for the FMG Young Farmer of the Year 2022 Aorangi regional final have been selected, with half the competitors coming from Mid Canterbury. The preliminary stages of the contest have wrapped up for the region, with the top eight competitors selected out of 27, across two district contests (Aorangi North and Aorangi South). Of the eight finalists, four are from Mid Canterbury. They are dairy farmer Peter O’Connor, DairyNZ extension partner Hugh Jackson, senior machinery operator Lachlan Angland, and irrigation management technician Jess Cunliffe. The other finalists from North Otago are casual shepherd Alice Perry, shepherd Tom Adkins, sheep, beef, dairy and walnut farmer James Hurst, and Daniel Durdle. They will go head-to-head at the Aorangi FMG Young Farmer of the Year regional final on February 26 at Fairlie. The Aorangi winner will qualify for the National Grand Final in July in Whangarei. Young Farmers’ chief executive Lynda Coppersmith said every year the competition improves despite the obstacles that Covid-19 have provided. “For season 54, we really want to test our competitors and see ‘who’s up for it’.

Results Aorangi North: 1 Peter O’Connor, Hinds YFC, 2 Hugh Jackson, Hinds, 3 Lachlan Angland, Pendarves, 4 Jess Cunliffe, Pendarves. Aorangi South: 1 Tom Adkins, Upper Waitaki, 2 James Hurst, Five Forks, 3 Daniel Durdle, Five Forks, 4 Alice Perry, Five Forks. “We’ve already exceeded last year’s entries across the country, despite the fact that entries for a number of district contests are still open,” Coppersmith said. “All of our volunteers and conveners right across the country have created some incredible challenges so far, with regional final season taking that to another level.” Hoping the country will have shifted to the Covid-19 Protection Framework by regional final season in January, Coppersmith said all events would strictly follow the Government guidelines at the time.

Fast-tracking on-farm decision-makers Heather Chalmers A group of Canterbury-based dairy farmers have set up their own post-graduate programme aimed at fast-tracking young people from university into management and decision-making positions in the industry. One of the farmers, Tony Dodunski, said there was a shortage of on-farm decision-makers on both owner-operator and corporate dairy farms. “We are trying to fill that gap by providing good working conditions and personal development opportunities for graduates straight out of university.” Known as the Grassroots Dairy Graduate Management Programme, it was based on other post-graduate programmes such as one offered by ANZ bank. Dodunski said programme numbers would initially be kept to six in the first year, in 2022, to establish a blueprint.

The network farmers involved with the programme happened to be in Canterbury, but plans were to expand in the future. “Previously, dairying hasn’t done well in attracting graduates straight into the industry from university. It is about fixing the perceived barriers so that graduates can have a successful career in the industry.” Graduates with any university degree or diploma can apply for the programme. “We are targeting smart young people.” The programme will place graduates in paid employment on one of the network farms on a fixed term contract from February to November. Over the 10 months participants would be given paid time off to attend a series of 30 modules covering a range of management topics delivered by a range of rural professionals and well-respected farmers. The network farmers were expected to teach graduates about the day-to-day operation of a dairy farm. At the conclusion of the programme, graduates will be ready to take on an entry level management role either on their current farm or another in the network.

Central Canterbury dairy farmer Tony Dodunski will host a graduate on his farm next year as part of a farmer-initiated management programme. PHOTO SUPPLIED A group of Canterbury-based dairy farmers known as the Canterbury Farm Business Group had initiated the programme, said Dodunski, who farms 650 cows at Lake Ellesmere/Te Waihora. “We aren’t out to make money out of the programme. We see a gap. A major barrier to our business growth is people. Our in-

tention is to grow with these people and provide pathways. “We are all university graduates ourselves. If we had had something like this, it would have sped up our development.” Buoyant dairy payout prices meant there were plenty of opportunities for graduates to grow their careers, Dodunski said.

WNZ and PWC shareholders vote wool merger in Two wool grower co-operatives which together transact one-third of the New Zealand wool clip have overwhelmingly voted in favour of a proposed merger of operations. It is hoped that the merger of Wools of New Zealand (WNZ) and Primary Wool Co-operative (PWC) owned CP Wool will spearhead a lift in wool prices. More than 99.7 per cent of WNZ shareholders and 100 per cent of PWC shareholders who voted supported the merger, which will see both companies become partners in a new entity called Wools

of New Zealand LP. The new organisation will combine the trading and operating businesses of WNZ and CPW. “Growers have spoken and backed our vision to build one organisation with strength and scale to make a real difference to New Zealand’s struggling wool industry,” WNZ chair James Parsons said. “We are very pleased with this positive result, which validates our strategy to consolidate the sector and better link the supply chain from the grower through to the consumer. By combining op-

erations, we can provide the scale, focus and shared vision to achieve better outcomes for our growers. “This merger represents the first serious grower-owned consolidation of the industry in many decades. By joining forces, we can deliver on our market vision and ultimately better realise the full potential of wool. “We appreciate and value the support and engagement from shareholders over the past 12 months and look forward to announcing further initiatives in the coming months,” Parsons said. Richard Young, chair of PWC

and chair of CPW, which is 100 per cent owned by PWC, said the result lays the foundations to deliver improved fortunes for the wool sector. “This single grower-owned entity will help drive our shift from wool as a raw commodity to grower-owned and branded consumer wool products. Ultimately, the development of an integrated supply chain aims to improve returns for our growers. “It will enable us to capture greater value for wool growers through shortened supply chains and invest deeper in marketing

and sales to deliver New Zealand-branded natural strong wool products that meet consumer demand. “I want to thank growers for supporting the move. We now have the ability to chart our own destiny as growers and capture greater value. Farmers need two positive income streams from sheep. We must now focus on delivering these better outcomes that we believe this combined strategy will unlock,” Young said. The WNZ and PWC boards expect to complete the transaction by November 30.

Hayman’s knockout rugby blow C

arl Hayman was once so important to the All Blacks that New Zealand Rugby apparently offered to buy the big man a dairy farm just to retain him. That was in 2007 when, at just 27 and in his playing prime, the massive tighthead prop shocked everyone when he said goodbye to the All Blacks to take up a lucrative three-year contract in England. Hayman reportedly became the highest paid player in the world, on an annual contract believed to be worth $1 million. Big bucks back then. Big bucks even now. But what good has it done Hayman, who retired in 2015? His health and behaviour, to put it mildly, has apparently been horrific and erratic, with constant headaches sending him into a spiral of alcohol abuse and

Daryl Holden frequent suicidal thoughts. That culminated in a suspended prison sentence in France after admitting to charges of domestic violence against his former wife. Hayman couldn’t explain what was happening. He thought he was going crazy. But he now believes that his recent diagnosis, after extensive testing in England, has provided him with the answer. Because the 41-year-old has been diagnosed with early-onset dementia and probable chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or

CTE as the progressive brain condition was more widely known. The “probable” mention of CTE refers to the fact that the condition can only be properly diagnosed post-mortem but its impact on its sufferers has been frightening, having been associated with premature deaths in the US, including NFL superstars. Hayman, the former Highlander who played close to 450 first-class or professional games in a 17-year career, has reportedly said he was “100 per cent” certain that the constant battering he took through his playing tenure, including thousands of training sessions, had contributed to his illness. And that’s why Hayman has joined the lawsuit against World Rugby that was being prepared on behalf of more than 100

players, who argue the governing body has failed to protect them. It’s a lawsuit that could change rugby forever. Many will argue that needs to happen to protect the athletes because the game was more physical, players stronger and bigger, the hits more frequent and often more devastating. And it’s not just rugby union facing this, but all contact sports. In Australia, for instance, a coroner’s inquest is looking into the suicide last year of an AFL player, who died at the age of 38 and was found to have CTE. Hayman simply wants change to make the game safer, with greater education for young players and their parents on the risks, and more support and monitoring offered to everyone around head injuries and workloads. And what could change look

like for rugby? A good question, but surely the return to play protocols following a concussion needs to be looked at. Keep concussed players out of the game for longer. Reducing the amount of contact training would be introduced by World Rugby next year in a positive step, but it’s not enough. Maybe rugby should insist all professional players, or at least those who have suffered multiple concussions, undergo an annual MRI brain scan before they were allowed back on the field. Drastic and over the top? Not at all. Anyone thinking that should probably remember the name Carl Hayman. His is a story everyone involved in rugby needs to understand and learn from. We owe that to him at the very least.

If you snooze, you don’t lose F

or any of us who are up long before the sun rises, an afternoon nap isn’t just pleasant . . . it’s mandatory. And now, a new study has proven that a quick “power nap” really does help the body and mind. The biggest challenge I face around having a “nana nap” is the length of time I should nap for. I often ask Mrs Hoops to wake me after a half hour as I have read several times that 20 minutes is all you need for a recharge. Last Thursday though Mrs Hoops was out and I didn’t set an alarm. I thought that because I normally only snooze for half an hour I’ll automatically wake after 30 minutes. Ninety minutes later I woke up! For the next 20 minutes I felt like I was conceived at Woodstock, but after that I felt great. Off I went to Twilight Golf that afternoon, feeling energised,

Phill Hooper OFF THE AIR shot 36 off the bat for the nine holes and ended up winning my grade. I am now questioning all those studies around power sleeping for 20 minutes. I’m not suggesting that a 90-minute snooze every afternoon is the go because you still want to be able to stack plenty of Zs at night. I think most of us are in tune with our bodies enough to know when we are really needing a nap. So, I have done some research into it and I have found this which backs up my experience from last Thursday. Researchers at Northwestern

University found that napping for just 90 minutes can boost both motor skills and memory. In tests, they found that sleeping during the day can enhance a person’s ability to learn challenging motor tasks, because it helps the brain to process and focus on the new skill (getting pars

According to the US National Sleep Foundation, the best nap lengths for adults are 20 or 90 minutes. Here’s why: ■■ 10–20-minute naps are also referred to as power naps. These short naps allow you to wake up feeling refreshed,

energised, and alert. To sweeten the deal, well-timed power naps have little to no impact on your night-time slumber, so you can head to sleep at your usual bedtime without

any difficulty dozing off. ■■ 90-minute naps allow you to cycle through all sleep stages while avoiding sleep inertia, since you’re not waking up during deep sleep. These naps can leave you feeling thoroughly rejuvenated, more creative, more focused, and more physically energised. I think I’ll aim for a mixture of both, but definitely the full 90 every Thursday in the summer. Bloody hell, I’m excited to try my theory on napping. I am officially old! LETTERS Re Pete’s Perspective I agree with everything Peter McQuarters wrote re sound systems (Pete’s Perspective Guardian 6-11-2021). I have a severe hearing loss, two hearing aids and tinnitus and nothing annoys me more than going to a function, listening to a speaker then halfway through, suddenly, crackle, pop microphone off then speaker says “It’s OK, I have a loud voice. BUT it’s not OK. Your brain wanders away and then the next thing everyone is

clapping and/or laughing and speech is all over and one hasn’t a clue what it’s been about. I always try to sit as near to the front as possible, I sometimes don’t go to functions because of their sound systems as I come home tired and grumpy. Listening is hard work when one is “really” trying to hear. When talking into a microphone PLEASE hold it close to your mouth, speak clearly but do not shout and keep head still, don’t move it from side to side or look down at written notes (unless microphone is pointed in that direction). Thank you Peter for bringing

this subject to light, only hope function organisers take note. Kathleen Vessey

Just a doll? The Golliwog thing is PC gone mad. Are we going to have to carry guilt of our great great great great great grandparents for how many years? Enough already. When I look at a Golliwog all I see is a kids’ toy, when a kid looks at it all they see is a toy, end of story. The world needs to move on being mindful of each other, but moving forward together on an

even footing.

Mark Somerville

* * * These highly collectable golly dolls are much sort after and are no longer called Golliwogs. They are Mr, Mrs, boy and girl gollies. The origins of gollies is NOT a caricature of black Africans, but are in fact from Egypt. To remove black dolls to me is racist as why would you give a white doll to a dark skinned child? This is my opinion anyway. Judy Skevington * * *

It’s just a doll.

I love Ashburton because it’s small and you don’t have to go far to get somewhere. It has lakes and schools. We are a small rural town and we’re close to Christchurch. Our attractions include the A&P show, a motorbike track, a church and an arcade. It’s a nice community.

Mid Canterbury is an amazing place to visit and raise your children. There are a variety of cultures and shops. Airports are close and we have an amazing domain with flowers, a pond, park and even an oval for sports. Life in Ashburton is peaceful. I will always love Mid Canterbury forever.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Different people inspire you to connect to different parts of your nature. Who has you seeking your better angels? Those are the folks to fill your mind, heart and time with now. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Don’t worry. You didn’t meet the right person at the wrong time because that’s not even a thing. There’s only meeting people when you do and making it mean something to you. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Around people who don’t yet know you, your options are wide open. You can be anyone you want or dare to be. And though it’s more work, the same principle actually applies to people who know you well. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): While it’s natural to find conflict off-putting, avoiding it altogether would be harmful. Resign yourself to the idea that difficult discussions are often necessary to reach a satisfying compromise. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You’re drawn to people with a pleasant resting face and excellent default personality. Usually, you only see those things when the chips are down and so are defences, but you have a sixth sense about it now. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): To be in a mix where people want what you have is to know the power of leverage. You have had it before and will get it again, once you see and present one of your many gifts in a new light. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You lavish demonstrations of respect and love on those in your circle but sometimes forget that you are part of that circle, too, and arguably the most important part. You put the “you” in “your circle.” SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): It’s true there are many with less than you have, but it’s not for you to feel guilty. Instead, move your stewardship to a higher level of doing the most good. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Even though digital clutter doesn’t really take up much living space, it can rent a disproportionate amount of space in your psyche and to deleterious effect. Good email organisation will revitalise. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Leave draining environments. You know who influences you in an exciting direction and should settle for no less. You can never have enough positive influences, so keep up the quest. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): That thing you wished for again and again was not a childish impulse of the past but a calling inside of a chrysalis. It’s still growing and will take a new form. What can you do to feed the process? PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Is it possible to revere one without a pedestal? To prop your admired one up too far is to set them up for a fall. Stay on equal footing. There is just as much to admire in the parallel view.

Gerard’s out to serve up the big upset Matt Markham It’s usually a short drive from the southern outskirts of Rakaia to Addington Raceway in Christchurch, but Gerard O’Reilly is expecting it might feel like an eternity this morning. There’s a lot to think about for the respected Mid Canterbury horseman, as he ponders the possible situations in which he might find himself in later in the day, when he takes the reins on one of the key figures in this year’s New Zealand Trotting Cup. O’Reilly drives grand stayer Laver in the feature event, and with it will have a weight of expectation on his shoulders that at some point, he’s the one who might have to inject some fireworks into the ultimate harness racing staying contest in the South Hemisphere, if not the world. While others are content to

sit back and let things unfold in front of them in big races, O’Reilly can probably ill-afford to take that approach with a horse who doesn’t possess the push-button speed of his rivals, but does boast a determination like no other in the field. “He’s not a one-trick pony, but you kind of have to think of him like that because of the way he’s been racing,” O’Reilly said. “I know that if the opportunity comes up at some point in the race and we can get rolling and work our way into it then we’re going to have to do that. “There’s not many in the race that can do it, but there will be probably plenty who will be happy to be sitting on his back.” It’s the fourth drive in the great race for O’Reilly, three of those incidentally wearing the same colours as he will wear today with Laver. He drove Tiger Tara to finished second behind Lazarus in 2016, and was placed sixth in the previous two editions with him before that. Then you have to go back to 1997, Iraklis’ Cup, to find Anne Franco, who he drove for Cliff Dynes to finish ninth. But with some experience in what it feels like, O’Reilly admitted it’s still a thrill to get out there again. “It’s a big moment, the great race so you’ve got to be excited about it, but there’s a job to do as well so you’re quite often more focused on that.” So, can he win it, or at least finish in the top three or four? “Definitely, if they run along a bit early and we are able to get into the race just at the right time, they are certainly going to

know that we are there, that’s for sure. “His last two runs have been

super, and shown that he’s up to being there. “If we can get away cleanly, I’m

sure he’ll prove that again.” While O’Reilly is very excited about being out on the track on one of the biggest days of racing for the year, he’s also disappointed that he won’t get to look across the track and see his daughter, Sarah experiencing the same thrill. The gun youngster has been struck down and forced onto the sidelines by appendicitis, and will miss all of Cup Week, and potentially a lot of the rest of the year’s racing after having surgery last week. Daughter’s misfortune could potentially lead to some good for Dad though, as he’s picked up the drive on Invitation Only earlier on in the day for Sarah’s bosses, Cran and Chrissie Dalgety, in her absence. There’s been no talk about a refund in driving fees for the race as yet, but it’s bound to come up in the conversation at some point if the horse happened to go well. “She hasn’t mentioned it yet, but that doesn’t mean she won’t,” O’Reilly said. “He looks like a really nice horse though, I’m a bit lucky to get the drive on him and I’m looking forward to it.” As well as Laver and Invitation Only, O’Reilly has four other drives at the meeting, including Vacation Hill in the Group One New Zealand Trotting Free-ForAll. “She trialled nicely last week, much more like her. “She’s got the perfect draw for a race like this and hopefully we can hold our own early and then get onto the back of the right horse and she’ll get a chance to sneak into the placings.”

Mid Canterbury’s horse and dog racing action

Locals to the fore on first day of Cup Week

SHORT & SHARP

Cup hope

Mayfield galloper, Dee And Gee, might not have featured at Riccarton on Saturday, but he continues to sit within the top half a dozen favourites for the New Zealand Galloping Cup this weekend. The Peter Corbetttrained runner finished down the track on the weekend, but is holding steady at a $13 quote as he looks to emulate his feat of winning the race like he did in 2019.

Matt Markham Cup Week started with a bang at Riccarton on Saturday, and the locals – both current and former – were right in amongst the action. The day belonged to class three-year-old colt Noverre, who won the Group One, $500,000 2000 Guineas for Team Te Akau. And even there, a local angle could be found. The rider of the colt in his three runs to prepare for the Guineas was Ashburton’s Jason Laking, who won the Group Three War Decree Stakes on the colt at his last start, before stepping aside for Opie Bosson to take the saddle on Saturday. An $800,000 purchase as a yearling, Noverre sat last and steamed home down centre track to win impressively – getting the big nod from his jockey in the process. “I was a little bit worried across the top when horses were going everywhere and I was trying to find something to track into the race,” he said. “They all came rolling back in and I had to get over their heels, but to the horse’s credit what a powerful finish he had. “He’s a class animal.”

Local hopes Ashburton Raceway trainer, Brent White, lines up two horses at today’s New Zealand Cup meeting at Addington, both of which will contest Group One features on the programme. White has Cranbourne engaged in the New Zealand Trotting Cup, and also One Apollo, who will take on the New Zealand Trotting Free-For-All, a huge achievement on such a notable day of racing in New Zealand.

Maui back in form While he wasn’t in the saddle aboard Noverre, Laking still made sure his name was up in lights when he won the $40,000 Premier 1200 metre event on the card with Eptimum for North Canterbury trainer, John Blackadder. He’d also finished second earlier in the day with Street Fighting Man. Former Mid Canterbury based trainers had a bit to say in the early stages of the day. Danny Champion and Kezia

Murphy grabbed a much-deserved win with long time maiden, Anchor Me in the third race on the programme, while the father and daughter training combination of Russell McKay and Ashlee Harrington tasted success with Royce Roca in the very next race. Ashburton trainer Robyn Ayton picked up a placing in the first race of the day with the ever-consistent, Commitment, who closed off strongly. Cup Week at Riccarton contin-

ues tomorrow, with the middle day of the carnival. Local trainers, Sarah and Matt Smith provide the only locally trained runners on the card with four starters. They line up Splendior, Madam Sequoia, Doris Dior and Thistle. Doris Dior was a strong last start winner on the home track of Ashburton, and falls into an even-looking Rating 65 benchmark 1200 metre event tomorrow, with Samantha Wynne to take the ride.

Smart Mid Canterbury threeyear-old trotter, Maui, got the winning groove back at Rangiora on Friday for local horseman David McCormick. The talented son of Peak took to the quick back-up from last week’s Kaikoura meeting to Rangiora on Friday like a duck to water, as he dashed up the passing lane to win the fourth race of his 25-start career. It was quadruple delight for McCormick, who not only trains and drives the gelding, but also bred and co-owns Maui with his wife, Elizabeth.

Hammers back on the road for Bill Osborne Shield Matt Markham For the sake of one more bonus point, Mid Canterbury will hit the road for one last battle this season. The Hammers will travel to Gisborne this weekend for their final foray of the season – a crack at the newly minted Bill Osborne Shield for the fifth and sixth ranked teams in the Heartland Championship. But for that one solitary bonus point from somewhere within the season of near misses and what ifs, the side could have been preparing for a match at home instead against Poverty Bay, and not having to travel north to meet them in what kind of feels a little bit like a consolation prize. And the scrutiny of it will all look back to Saturday and an effort against Buller that again left a bit out on the paddock as they ran in three tries against one of the competition’s two winless sides to win 22-3 on the Methven Domain. Yes, it was a victory. But on paper it was a victory that should have rubber-stamped with a four-try bonus point. Instead, there was a nervous wait post-match for other results to flood in which determined their fate. In the final wash-up, they sat

Solitary bonus point costs home play-off tied with both Poverty Bay and Horowhenua Kapiti on 24 points. Poverty Bay gained the home advantage through their greater points differential, but due to both Mid Canterbury and Horowhenua Kapiti having the same, it was settled on tries. And Mid Canterbury were the superior team in that regard. So, it’s once more into the breach for the Hammers this week, and an opportunity to perhaps finish their season in a manner in which they have promised to do all season, a complete performance. On Saturday, they struggled. Some, if not most of it, should be credited to a fiercely determined Buller side who with nothing to lose but pride to gain threw everything they could at the Mid Canterbury side. An 8-3 lead for the home team at halftime, courtesy of a try to Michael Hennings and a penalty to Tom Reekie, seemed a little underwhelming, but in the grand scheme of things it was a reflection of a battle that was unfolding under the mountain. Three tries were the modus operandi in the second, but only a double to Seta Koroitamana came luckily the result was enough to see Mid Canterbury scrape into

some form of finals rugby by the skin of their teeth. Mid Canterbury and Poverty Bay met a few weeks ago in a match which went to golden point, so there’s no easy path home from here for them in the match, which will be played on Sunday. It’s been a tough season for Mid Canterbury, who at times have shown a lot, but often haven’t quite been able to grab the opportunity in front of them. It has frustrated the coaching team and it’s frustrated the players themselves, but at least there’s a chance to right it all this weekend and celebrate by picking up a bit of silverware to cap off their campaign. In other action from the Heartland Championship, South Canterbury were crowned minor premiership winners with their eighth consecutive win, and will host Thames Valley this weekend in the Meads Cup final. Meanwhile, Whanganui rolled Thames Valley in their match to set up a clash at home with North Otago, who thumped King Country, for the Lochore Cup. Babolat claim upset win Matt Markham Three weeks into Mid Canterbury Tennis A Grade action for the season, and tides are already turning. After the first two weeks, two big wins to Team Head had the strong line-up looking the goods at the top of the standings, while the other three sides battled it out. But on Saturday afternoon at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre that all came crashing back down. Taking on the second-placed side, Team Babolat, who had a loss in the opening round to Team Yonex before a strong win in the second round, Team Head were all but wiped off the court as Babolat went to town, winning seven of the nine matches to grab the overall tie. The match-up started well enough for Team Head. Their No.1 and No.2 singles

players, Ryan Watt and Ollie Bubb both grabbed singles victories over Lee Gilbert and Gareth Evans respectively – but that was their lot for the day. Josh Gilbert, Mia Liu, Jacob

Adam and Holly-Hayne Feutz bounced back for Babolat with straight sets, comfortable wins in their singles matches, and they then all team up and clean swept the doubles fixtures to re-

ally put a stamp on their day on the court. Gilbert and Evans got their revenge in beating Watt and Bubb 6-1, 6-4 to highlight the day’s performance, which will

see their side become one of the teams to watch out for this season. Saturday’s other match, at the bottom of the four-team competition saw Yonex and Wilson lock horns. And it was a tight one. Yonex emerged victorious, winning five matches to four – but a number of games, especially in the doubles could have easily fallen the other way. In singles action, Yonex grabbed wins from Pete Kirwan against Brendon Adam, Maggie Crosby against Phil Crozier and Drew Gilbert against Issac Adam. Wilson picked up wins courtesy of Aiden Watt against Jason Feutz, Go Tamara against Jake Parsons and Isabella van Dooren against Ashton Cromie. In the doubles play, the strong pairing of Feutz and Kirwan were too good for Watt and Tamara at the top end, while Parsons and Crosby had a hard-fought match against Adam and Crozier before getting the win, before Cromie and Gilbert tidied the fixture up with a straight sets win against van Dooren and Adam.

No Limits ‘giant success’ Matt Markham The smiles on the faces of the more than 30 people who took part in the inaugural No Limits Netball session on Saturday was all the proof Mid Canterbury Netball needed to know they’re on to a winner. After realising there was potential to give locals with a disability to learn more and enjoy the experience of playing netball through their weekly Walking Netball programme, the brains trust at Mid Canterbury Netball put their heads together to come up with the idea. And Mid Canterbury Netball’s development officer, Natalie Corbett, was hailing the day as a success come Monday morning. “I think we could call it a giant

success, it was such a great day,” she said. Split into two sessions across the day, close to 30 players stepped out onto the court – including a number of new faces from those who are frequent players at walking netball – and were put through their paces in a fun, safe and enjoyable environment. “For us it was about introducing them to a little bit more about netball, but having some fun while we did it, and there were plenty of smiles and laughter out there, which was so great to see.” Those who took part were taken through a series of drills to get things moving for the day, before splitting up and playing a game or two before a shooting competition at the end of the day with prizes given out. “That was a lot of fun, and we didn’t make it easy for them – but they loved it. It was so good to see them working together to try and succeed.”

Based on the success of the first attempt of No Limits Netball, Corbett said it was likely that it would return again in the future. “I think we were keen to see how Saturday went before making any plans going forward, but there was so much enjoyment out there that it’s hard to see us not doing it again at some point.” The idea was born earlier this year when a local group from CCS Disability Action began attending Walking Netball sessions. Such was the number of people wanting to be involved that now not only is there the normal sessions early on Tuesday mornings but now there is also a 10.30am slot especially for those with disabilities. It quickly became evident that there was a need there and Mid Canterbury Netball were more than happy to meet the challenge. And judging by Saturday’s success, there’s no limits for the future either. Left – Ciarra Scott and Kirsty Lumsden. Legend steps on to Methven fairways Matt Markham

Golfing royalty stepped onto the Methven Golf Course on Sunday, and then a few hours later walked off a winner. Golfing legend Sir Bob Charles swung his driver on the Methven course for the first time ever on the weekend, taking part in the Devils Own tournament held there over the weekend. Among a field of 76 players, Sir Bob stepped out onto the course playing off a one handicap – a little shorter than he’s used to with his normal handicap at two on most other courses. As he arrived on the course at 7.30am on Sunday morning, the six-time PGA Tour winner commented on the length of time it had taken him to step out onto the Methven fairways. “It’s taken me 85 years to come to play your course,” he said.

Methven Golf Club co-ordinator, Bruce Dickson said the presence of one of the game’s greats on the small rural golf course created a huge impression among club members. At the completion of his day on the greens, Sir Bob presented the club with a copy of his book. “The Methven Club presented him with some Methven Golf Club labelled mementoes, and a copy of the 75th history booklet,” Dickson said. Of course the big question, though, was how did New Zealand’s greatest golfer fair on the unforgiving Methven course? He shot 73, in a round that included four bogeys and two birdies, and he and his playing partner Brendan Callaghan won the team stableford competition for the day by lot ahead of three other teams. “He was impressed with the course, and commented about the consistent greens and the variety of trees and the rhodies,” Dickson said. “He said he was also pleased that there are mostly evergreens around the course.”

McLeod shines again Mid Canterbury’s own Dallas McLeod was again at the forefront of a Canterbury victory on the weekend, as they booked a spot in the NPC semi-finals. McLeod scored a double in the first half of their match against Bay Of Plenty, as Canterbury strode away winners 40-28. The Cantabrians, who missed the playoffs for the first time since 2003 last year, will now head to Hamilton to take on Waikato in the semi-finals this weekend.

Allenton lawn bowler, Dan Hopkins, claimed the honours in the Hampstead Bowling Club Shanghai Singles Tournament on the weekend, beating off a strong field of players in the race to the top of the pile. Played under a different format than normal singles, with three players on a rink playing against each other, Hopkins emerged victorious beating Mike Quinn and Greg Harrison.

CRICKET

Tech bounce back, Allenton falter Matt Markham The Tech Stags bounced right back to form on Saturday in South Canterbury cricket, but it was another tough day at the office for their Mid Canterbury bedfellows, Allenton. A week after suffering their first loss of the season, Tech hosted Celtic on the Ashburton Domain, and took to beginning their pathway to redemption in the finest of fashions. However, down in Pleasant Point it wasn’t quite as an enjoyable time for Allenton, who felt the full force of their hosts and the powerhouse twin brother combination of Liam and Adam Beck. There was one bright spot for the Allenton side though, an honours board effort from Hasdeep Singh, who claimed six wickets in an outstanding individual bowling performance. In Ashburton, Tech lost the toss and were asked to step out into the middle and take the ball for the first innings. Celtic started well enough, scoring 17 runs before Richard Print claimed the first of his two wickets for the day, the other coming at the very next delivery

to see him sitting, momentarily on a hat-trick. Two steady partnerships followed though, and after 20 overs, Celtic were 81-5 and needing a major rearguard action from their tail enders. It didn’t come though. Instead, Harry Jones stepped up and tore the Celtic line-up to bits. Jones claimed five wickets from his 10 over spell, conceding just 24 runs as Celtic collapsed to be all out for 96 in the 30th over. The batting response from Tech was always going to be hurried as they look to maintain a strong net run rate this season, and it took openers Jason Morrison and Will McKee just 14 overs to run down the required 97 and win the match convincingly. Morrison ended on 56 not out, while McKee was 32 not out down the other end. The result lifted Tech into clear second on the standings, and the local lads will already have one eye on revenge when they face Pleasant Point early in December. Meanwhile, in Pleasant Point, Allenton were asked to field first and grabbed a couple of early wickets before the Beck twins strode out into the middle, and compiled a 205-run third wicket stand to turn the match on its head. Allenton captain Karmjeet Singh emptied his bowling stocks

cupboard, using eight bowlers in the innings. And it wasn’t until he got to his last choice, Hasdeep Singh that he struck gold. Singh was sublime. Bowling nine overs near the end of the innings, he claimed six wickets. His run started by removing the Beck twins in the same over. He then claimed another four batsmen over the final overs of the match to finish with 6-37 –

and earn himself a spot on the Allenton honours board. But that third wicket stand did all the damage, as Point compiled an imposing 270 total for Allenton to chase. It was always going to be a tough total to try and run down, especially against an unbeaten side, and while a number of the

Allenton batsmen made starts, none managed to press on and compile a big score. Karmjeet Singh scored 24 at the top of the innings while 23 from Kulvinder Kirk provided some resistance down the order, but Allenton were eventually rolled for 123 handing them their fifth consecutive loss of the season.
