Pawtastic, dogs of all shapes and sizes took over the Mt Hutt Skifield for the 2022 Meadow Fresh Dog Derby. There were plenty of happy four-legged friends that took on the spring snow.
In the open division the top three were John Venner, Sez Ped die, and Connor Glynn.
Another competitor was Mt Hutt ski doctor Kate Gazzard, who together with Boots, a border collie kelpie came home fourth in the open division.
Dogs galore, a different sight filled the ski slopes of Mt Hutt over the weekend as the annual Dog Der by took place.
“It was Pawfect weather and an amazing turn out for Mt Hutt’s 6th Annual Dog Derby,” Mt Hutt marketing co-ordinator Richie Owen said.
The event’s entry proceeds to talling $1220 would be going to the SPCA.
“Four-wheel-drive was most definitely an advantage as own ers and man’s best friends were put to the test on the 850m undu lating course.”
Over 40 entrants tackled the open division, with another 17 kids taking on the shorter course. In the kids’ division the top three were Angus Morris, Sophie Ireland and Flynn Harding.
“We were the first over 40 across the line, and Mt Hutt staff took out the top four spots.
“The dog derby is the best day of the season on Mt Hutt. So much fun. So much excitement. So much happiness,” Gazzard said.
Gazzard who has run many a marathon said battling the soft spring snow conditions was one of the hardest things she’s done.
“That was the hardest event I’ve done running up that ski hill, my lungs were burning for the rest of the day.”
Gazzard wasn’t the only one ex hausted after the run.
“Boots napped all afternoon in the medical room, and went home and napped some more.”
The derby is expected to make a return at a similar time next year.
Investigations are still ongoing into the cause of a crash south of Rakaia that killed one person, and injured five, two critically.
“Police are yet to formally speak to the occupants of the vehicle, however those interviews will be conducted in due course,” a police spokesperson said on Monday afternoon. Emergency services, including the Westpac rescue helicopter responded to the crash at 7.30pm on Saturday evening after a vehicle hit a tree on Gardiners Road. Police could not comment on the names or ages of the victims or the circumstances of the accident while they carry out their investigations.
The role of museums in preserving history is the subject for the monthly U3A meeting next Tuesday. Deputy director of the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum, Danielle Campbell will examine the role of museums in not only preserving history but collecting, conserving, cataloguing, digitising and interpreting history. Her speech will also cover ways in which museums are attempting to make their collections more accessible. U3A meets at the Ashburton Event Centre at 10.15am. Members and casual visitors are invited.
Sir Ian Taylor and Dr Don Elder are guest speakers at Advance Ashburton Community Foundation’s annual celebration this Thursday. Sir Ian Taylor, who’s founder of the internationally known animation company responsible for the award-winning America’s Cup graphics and Dr Elder, chair of the Family Help Trust will give keynote addresses. At the celebration, chairperson, Mary Ross will deliver a report on the foundation’s work this year and the 2022 leaders’ scholars will be announced. The community is invited to the celebration at the Ashburton Event Centre from 5.30 to 7.30pm.
TV presenter turned sheep and beef farmer, Matt Chisholm, is bringing his Time Out Tour to Ashburton this week in his role as ambassador for the Rural Support Trust.
He’ll be hosted by the Mid-Can terbury Rural Support Trust. Doors open at 6.30pm on Thursday Oc tober 20 at the Ashburton Hotel.
Chisholm signed on as the trust’s inaugural ambassador earlier this year and has been on a nationwide tour talking about mental wellness and resilience.
So far, he has visited nine rural communities and connected with more than 1000 people.
Chisholm has shared openly about his mental health struggles and how he found a way through.
This tour is about giving people in our rural communities the confidence to talk to each other about what they’re going through. We want to remind people that they’re not alone.
Key to getting Chisholm into the role has been Taranaki Rural Support Trust chairman and longtime family friend Mike Green.
“Matt told his story in public for the first time at an event the trust hosted in New Plymouth in 2020, shortly after the screening of his documentary, Man Enough,” Green said.
“Matt’s role as our ambassa dor is about remaining mental ly resilient through tough times. We’ve partnered with him because he has an important message to
share with rural people, to give hope that there is a way through whatever difficulties individuals and families may be facing.”
Green said the trust had re ceived overwhelmingly positive feedback from those who had at tended the Time Out Tour events across the country.
He believed Chisholm’s story was resonating because people could relate to the challenges and
experiences he shared.
“This tour is about giving people in our rural communities the con fidence to talk to each other about what they’re going through. We want to remind people that they’re not alone.
“When things get tough, we can lose sight of those around us who can relate to our own struggles and help us find a way forward.
“We are seeing evidence that
Matt’s tour is helping. After each event, people are reaching out to the Rural Support Trust and oth er like-minded organisations for support.
“As Matt tours other parts of the country, we hope more people are inspired and feel confident about reaching out for help.”
Chisholm’s battles are docu mented in Imposter, a book he published last year, and docu
mentaries Like a Man and Man Enough, both supported by the Mental Health Foundation.
Speaking of his ambassador ship role, Chisholm said, “I like the good work the Rural Support Trust does – largely behind the scenes. I want people to understand how the trust can help them in their communities, so more people can access their services when they need it most.”
“For the Rushtons to be given the chance to speak in person is a good thing,” Reti said. “We get a better sense of the qualita tive aspects of their presentation when the submitters are present.”
National’s spokesperson on health is cau tiously optimistic about the chances of Claire and Gerard Rushton to persuade the government’s Health Select Committee to approve free vaccinations to all New Zea landers by the age of 16.
Dr Shane Reti is a member of the se lect committee the Rushtons will address on October 26 and speak to their petition which contains 6357 signatures.
But he warns the committee is “stacked with Labour MPs” and chaired by their MP for Palmerston North, Tangi Utikere.
The government’s current position is that the vaccines aren’t on the national immunisation schedule which means they have to be persuaded to change their poli cy Dr Reti said.
“Utikere answers to party policy, they’ll vote on party lines and they have the num bers to win the day,” he added.
He’s heartened by support given by cli nicians in recent years to extending the availability of meningococcal B and ACWY vaccines.
He emphasises much depends on the presentation and the opportunity select committee members have to ask ques tions.
“The members will have read the sub mission and need time to ask questions and seek answers,” he said.
Ministry of Health officials then come to the table and either offer their support or concerns about the submission. “The committee will take their opinions into account when deciding on the next step,” Reti said.
“I will seek clarity on what the hurdles could be, what the committee’s stance is and, if it fits their runway, what their time table is to deliver.”
“If it’s not on their radar I want to know why.”
Dr Reti points to the Labour Govern ment being distracted by health reforms and “that’s where their funding is going” he said.
He said he’s encouraged by the com mittee’s willingness to hear the Rushtons speak and the support from clinicians but he’ll get a better sense of an outcome when the select committee meets.
A signed cloth marked the opening of Hakatere Presbyterian Church in 1957, and the same cloth will commemorate its closure in December.
It was the idea of the Millar family, loyal members of the church for generations, who wanted to recognise the significance of the new building.
Len Millar was session clerk of the Ashburton South Presbyterian Church, and his daughter, Alison Scammell, remembers the cloth being displayed and signed by everyone including the ministers, elders and congregation.
Alison, who attended the opening as a youngster, says she’s the only one left from the original congregation, and it’s time to close the building and relocate permanently to the recently reopened Presbyterian Church on Oxford Street.
She recalls the opening service led by Rev Eric Melville, moderator of the Ashburton Presbytery, and attended by a capacity audience, “some who were irate because they couldn’t get in”.
Now a congregation of about 40 attend services that alternate between Oxford Street and Tinwald.
“It makes more sense to attend one church and we’re holding the final service at Tinwald on December 11,” she said.
An earlier church, built in 1888, was pulled down to make way for the present building, and the Millar family traces its origins back to the early days.
They donated many of the vestments and the organ to the church and Alison was baptised in the old church, was a Sunday School teacher, Bible Class member, Girls’ Brigade leader and treasurer of the Ladies Fellowship.
She recalls 12 ministers appointed to
the church during her time there.
Her husband, Roger, has been a member of the Board of Managers, her children were christened and attended its youth group and her mother, Phyllis, has recorded the history of the church.
“I’ve always regarded it as home. I was
carried into the old church as a baby and I want to be carried out of the existing one when I die, if it’s still available as a church,” she said.
Alison has many regrets about its closure and is hoping it can continue as a worship centre if other denominations
are interested in purchasing it.
The signed cloth has remained in her family since 1957 and was brought out on special occasions.
Alison now possesses it and will display it to mark another milestone when the final service is held in December.
The Ashburton District Council is currently reviewing its awards policy, which looks to remove one of the unused awards and at the behest of the mayor remove the limit on some of the remaining awards.
which is why the latter is proposed to be dropped.
The mayor’s award for public service has been awarded 11 times, and there have been 10 civic awards.
asked why there was a limit.
“If there is more than one worthy recipient then perhaps there could be more [than one award], so why are we limiting it to one,” Brown said.
The keys to the Ashburton District are gathering dust.
The Keys to the District were introduced as a Community Honours Award in 2019, but is yet to have had a worthy nominee to be awarded.
The awards were revamped in 2017 to introduce a range of award types rather than one civic award, with the keys to the district then added in 2019.
No keys to the district have been awarded and no-one has yet to be named an honorary citizen,
In 2022, Mid Canterbury Rural Women received an Ashburton Medal. The medal was first awarded in 2017 to Tony Harnett, and then to Martin Nordqvist in 2018 as the only other recipient.
Currently, only one medal can be awarded each year, and one set of keys, but mayor Neil Brown
“It’s not as though we are going to give away 35 of them, it will be limited anyway.
“I would like to see the numbers removed and we decide how many get given away each year without having a limit.”
As the councillors requested further changes to the policy at
what was the final meeting of the term, the council opted to leave the matter on the table.
Once the proposed changes are made to the policy, it will be considered by the new council.

One of the world’s newest coun tries is a place where Russians and Ukrainians can mix on friendly terms.
Ashburton couple, Chris and Angie Mole, recently returned from Montenegro, a small nation that broke from Serbia 16 years ago, and observed tourists from both Russia and Ukraine enjoy ing their holidays together.
For four months the Moles house-sat an apartment owned by their son, Jonny, who pur chased it in 2020.
When he relocated to Central and North America as a face book/video advertiser, he invit ed his parents to live in his third floor apartment that looks out on the Adriatic Sea.
They loved it so much, they’re planning to return.
Montenegro, is a tourist hotspot for people from Eastern Eu rope, especially from Hungary, Serbia, Russia and Ukraine.
“While there was a war going on, we still noticed they mixed together at Kotor Bay, a holiday and cruise ship destination,” Chris said.
“The country is a place where you can be apart from the rest of the world and many Russians have gone there to live.”
Two real estate friends of Chris and Angie’s are Russian and Ukrainian and “they get on well together”.
Their recollection of the four months spent in the two-bed room apartment is the low cost of
living. They could fill up a super market trolley for about $NZ50 and dining out was cheap.
“Our memories are beautiful scenery, great climate and warm Adriatic seas where you could swim for six months a year,” they said.
“It’s a young country with a war-torn past, but steeped in history. Nearby is Rison, a town developed in Roman times where ruins, artifacts and fine art has been excavated.”
The Moles loved their experi ence and Chris, a Google adver tising consultant, was still able to work at reduced hours from his son’s apartment. It had no TV but they followed world news on the internet.
“Because Kotor Bay is a tourist
centre, we were able to be under stood but, if you travel inland to where life hasn’t changed for cen turies, there was little or no Eng lish spoken,” they said.
Montenegro people speak a Serbian dialect.
While based at Kotor Bay, they travelled to Bosnia and Croatia and always felt safe.
“Montenegro is now a demo cratic country with a low crime rate,” they said.
It closed its borders in 2020 because of Covid, but, because tourism is important to its econ omy, there are now no restric tions, despite the pandemic still being present.
“It’s different from anywhere we’ve been and we’d love to re turn there again,” they said.

Daryl Holden | Managing editorFarmers are at risk of breaking the law as the Government’s winter grazing regime becomes increasingly confusing and planting for winter crops needs to take place, says Federated Farmers national board spokesperson and South Canter bury farmer Colin Hurst.
D-Day looms for farmers to have con sents in place, warned Federated Farmers, Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) and DairyNZ.
The Government had been slow to im plement freshwater farm plans, forcing farmers into an expensive consent process, while councils nationwide were struggling with the consenting burden.
“We’ve been told by the Ministry for the Environment, Ministry for Primary Indus tries, and various regional councils that ‘it’s ok’ and nothing will happen if farmers get planting, even though they’d be at risk of breaking the law,” Hurst said.
He said Federated Farmers, B+LNZ and DairyNZ anticipated this outcome and even warned the Government.
“The Government hasn’t delivered a farm plan pathway as promised and they can’t even tell us when it will be ready,” Hurst said.
“Regional councils are trying, but they are overworked, just like farmers. It’s been estimated that up to 10,000 farmers will need to apply for a resource consent with out delay, which will waste a lot of time and money.
“Both councils and the Government have recognised that farmers have im proved winter grazing practice, but the
Government hasn’t delivered on its prom ise to develop a farm plan pathway.”
The current rules require farmers who carry out winter grazing – and don’t meet a range of permitted activity criteria – to ei ther have a certified Freshwater Farm Plan or to apply for a resource consent from No vember 1, 2022. However, with the devel opment of Freshwater Farm Plans being delayed, thousands of farmers must now apply for a consent.
Federated Farmers, DairyNZ and B+LNZ
wrote to Minister David Parker in August calling for winter grazing rules to be put on hold until November 2023, as the Gov ernment had not yet implemented crucial elements of the new framework.
There had been no response. A second letter was sent to Minister Parker on Sep tember 22, which also included Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
Hurst said some councils were advising farmers not to apply for a resource con sent, even if the law required it.
“In the view of Federated Farmers, this is placing a lot of risk on farmers. If things go wrong on the farm and council action is taken, a farmer will be in a far worse posi tion than if they had a resource consent,” Hurst said.
Sustainability was the winning theme at last week’s New Zea land Food Awards (NZFS) gala dinner, with Canterbury’s freerange pork company Poaka tak ing three awards for its whole chorizo salami product, includ ing supreme winner and both the primary sector and cuisine artisan awards.
Poaka lies south of Christchurch, at Aylesbury and its free range pigs are highlighted by being finished on acorns and sweet chestnuts.
The name Poaka literally trans lates to “pig” in the Māori lan guage.
NZFS deputy director-general Vincent Arbuckle said the high quality of entrants was a good illustration of the quality and in novation driving the food sector.
“I’d like to particularly congrat ulate Poaka for taking out the su preme award. It’s a well-deserved recognition for the talent and persistence of its people to bring its vision of handcrafted artisan chorizo.”
The winning product was a re sult of the unique vision of Poaka founder Josh Hill, who was rais ing and farming pigs in a way that was quite rare and uncon ventional, here in New Zealand.
The 36-year-old entrepreneur set up the ‘paddock-to-plate’ op eration on his parents’ orchard in Aylesbury in 2016.
Hill previously worked as a hel icopter pilot, general engineer, carpenter, welder and tractor driver, and fell in love with watch ing animals grow and thrive after
a short stint on a Southland farm.
He returned home with a plan to utilise his parents’ unused or chard to raise the happiest, her itage pigs in order to make the best salami through traditional methods, and knowledge that a
nut-fed diet would enhance the meat flavour.
Hill was hands-on throughout the processes, including work ing with specialist butchers, fer menting the pork as traditional ly as possible, whilst remaining
within the framework of food safety, as well as selling the prod ucts directly to the public at the Christchurch Farmers’ Market.
His heritage breed, pas ture-raised pigs graze and grow slowly on a diet of acorns and
sweet chestnuts, to make not just a way of living that meets high animal welfare and food safety standards, but also creates in tensely flavoured, world-class sa lami, bacon, sausages and whole muscle products.

It’s too late for Christchurch mayor, Phil Mauger, to start all over again. If he had, he may have received a different answer from Ashburton’s Neil Brown.
Instead, in his first week in the job, he asked Canterbury councils to help pay for the city’s Te Kaha multi-use arena. He has a dilemma. He’s inherit ed a stadium that’s blown out its budget to $683 million, leaving a $150 million void.
It’s a huge financial ask for Christchurch ratepayers but, overwhelmingly, they want it and now they’re facing its price tag.
So Phil Mauger announced on camera he wanted Ashburton and eight other local authorities to help meet the difference. He probably felt the obligation, if only to demonstrate to ratepay ers that he’d like someone else
to share the burden.
Predictably Neil Brown said he’d welcome Mauger in Ash burton but warned he’d need to present a compelling business case.
If the mayor of Christchurch could demonstrate an econom ic benefit, then perhaps we’d contribute, he said.
Wise words. That’s mayor al talk for saying don’t ask us via a TV reporter. That’s rude. Prepare your case, come down and sit around our table. Tell us what you want, offer some incentives and we’ll consid er it alongside a new bridge,
roading, an upgraded domain and our flash civic centre and library.
But you can’t blame Mauger entirely. To oppose the stadium in a mayoral election was to cause political self-harm.
Probably those local councils that didn’t suffer earthquake damage at the time, would have contributed.

If Phil Mauger can’t promise us pre-season Crusader games, a visit by Elton John or 1000 preferential seats in its Hakatere Stand, then he’s unlikely to make progress down here.
He, in turn, can accuse his predecessors of not attempting the collegial thing. If, among the debris of Jade Stadium, a previous civic leader had clari on called Canterbury to fund a fresh stadium out of the ruins, it would have been built and paid for.
Rocket Man before returning by chopper or 1000 preferential seats in its Hakatere Stand, then he’s unlikely to make progress down here.
What we can promise is a desire to support the stadium by attending the games, visiting the conventions and bussing
our fans to Adele, Lady Gaga or Robbie Williams.
Instead Phil Mauger should play the election game. With 12 months to go before the next general election and, with both major parties nip and tuck, then the one with the biggest prom ises will win.
That means the party will ing to deplete New Zealand’s cash reserves could secure key Christchurch Central and Christchurch E ast electorates, if they support an additional $150 million.
Christchurch is also asset rich and, when it depletes them, it could offer a naming rights inducement.
A company or product that wants to identify with the Crusaders, the most successful rugby franchise in New Zea land, could be lured to add its name to the infrastructure.

many words of three or more
including plurals, can you make from the five letters, using each letter only once? No foreign words or words beginning with a capital are allowed. There’s at least one five-letter word.
ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Today brings you an abundance of original ideas. Regardless of how good they are, because of the speed by which they pour in, they will be quickly forgotten unless you capture, contain and catalogue them.
TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): You’re a natural leader and you’ll shine with executive ability, which is to say you’re good at running the show. You can be tough, tender, warm or direct as you adapt to the show you’re running.
GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): Misreading a situation can cause minor mistakes or major pain. You can avoid trouble by paying close attention, and then paying attention from a distance as your awareness grows with every new angle on it.
CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Your world is saturated with opinions. Your restraint on the matter will lead to serenity. It will come as a relief to hear to share fewer opinions, and to find that you have fewer of them to share.
LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): You have a choice about how to encourage follow-through with the actions that will net a desired result. You can motivate through fear or inspiration. Fear is faster. Inspiration is healthier and more pleasant.
VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Even though you can’t change another person, as you change yourself, if the other person has the least bit of awareness and empathy, a countermove will be made to adapt to yours.
LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Life is the kind of teacher whose lectures seem to drift off-topic, but there’s magic in this. You’ll get a clue as to your most profitable move – a sign from the natural world pointing your mind to an answer.
SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Life is a song. Sometimes you dance to it and sometimes you sing along, but right now, you’re in the mood to listen, learn and see what happens when others make the moves.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You don’t have to accept what’s in your head as the truth. You can change your thought, pick a new one or create one from scratch. Whatever your mood, you are one thought away from lifting it.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Love’s display isn’t always a bouquet of romance or a glamorous foreign holiday. You’ll give your love in doses as small as a spoon, as diligent as washed a dish and as moving as a carpool.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Wanting isn’t wrong or right. While you can’t effectively command yourself to want what’s good for you, you can steer your desire toward the best option.
PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You don’t have to resonate with everything. Some emotions are unhealthy to steep in. Your empathetic skills are on point, including those that keep you from unhealthy empathy.

The Ashburton Agricultural & Pastoral Association Show is held on the weekend following Labour weekend of every year and is the largest two-day annual agricultural event held in Mid Canterbury.
Hosted at the Ashburton Showgrounds on 17.4 hectares of land since its founding in 1877, the show’s mission statement is to “promote excellence in agriculture and goodwill between town and country”. The show attracts exhibitors from all over the South Island.
Each year the president chooses a show theme and many exhibits/competitions are based around this and this year, on October 28-29, the theme is Multi Cultural Mid Canterbury.
The show offers strong two-day competitions for horses, dog trials and one-day competitions for sheep/wool/pet lambs, cattle (dairy, beef and calves), poultry, alpacas, shearing, goats, donkeys, and grain and seeds.
Highland dancing is a highlight, plus tiny tots and home industries for adults and students.
All events are well supported offering a good standard of competition to competitors. Over 190 entrants complement the livestock competitors together with food, music, displays, entertainment and competitions.
The show is run by a small hardworking committee helped by a large team of volunteers who work together in the week prior to the show.
As far as show attractions there is an excellent ring for horse events and enough space for exhibitors including a large home industries pavilion which replaced one that was burnt down in 1989.
A standard has been set and the committees over the years have worked
tirelessly to provide what is now known as one of the best two-day shows in the South Island, attracting entries from a wide area.
The Ashburton A&P Show is fortunate to own the grounds and these are hired out regularly to various groups during the year.
It has been the home base since 1956
to the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union. In the summer months, large show jumping events are held regularly along with other smaller horse events.
As the Ashburton A&P Association has had to change with the times it has needed to keep looking forward into the future to ensure the continuation of the organisation.
let the curls fool you, sheep aren’t judged on which is the cutest, softest, or fluffiest; beneath that heap of wool is a market lamb or a breeding stock animal looking to win some blue ribbons.
To judge a market lamb, which is intended for slaughter at about 40kg, you look for the degree of muscling, degree of finish, balance and style, frame size and soundness and structure – in that order.
For a breeding ewe you look for balance and style, frame size, soundness and structure, degree of muscling, degree of leanness, and wool — in that order.
So no need to be sheepish, once you get past all the wool it’s easy. Let’s dive in on learning how to judge sheep and knowing what goes on at your next livestock show.
To evaluate the degree of muscle, take a look at the thickness through the centre of the rear legs, the width between them as the animal stands, the length and width of the loin, the length of the hind saddle and the shape over their rack.
First take a rear-view look at your animal and measure the widest part. The widest part should be muscle from hip to hip and that width should carry through the legs – your sheep should look square.
The loin is set between the back of the ribs and the hips, and it is
an important muscle for locomotion, so a nice long, wide loin is what you’re looking for.
The hind saddle is basically just the rear half of the animal starting at the last rib, and it contains all the best cuts of meat such as the loin, sirloin, and legs.
The fore saddle is from the last rib up to the base of the neck, and what you want is to have a slightly longer hind saddle than fore saddle.
And finally the rack is the rack of ribs, and a wide rack is ideal, and the ability to feel the grooves of muscles as you run your hand from the fore ribs to rear ribs.
The degree of finish is related to the degree of muscle, frame size and stage of maturity. Basically,
the ideal market lamb will have a good degree of muscle, which fits cleanly in its frame, and the animal should be at the right size for their age.
Market lambs are normally ready for slaughter no later than six months, so it’s best if they hit their prime within that time period.
You can evaluate finish on an individual basis, but when comparing sheep in a class, you’ll probably use degree of finish to help you rank them.
For balance and style, evaluate the body width, depth, and length. You actually don’t want the width of your sheep to be completely even throughout; more width in the more desirable
cuts is better, meaning that the widest part of your sheep should be in the centre of the leg muscle, and they should get gradually narrower through the front end.
For depth, measure from the top of the back to the bottom of the belly, and the belly should be at the same level all the way from the chest to the teats.
Your sheep should look like a big barrel. Your sheep also gets balance and style points from a wide, level chest floor, angularity over the shoulders, a straight topline, and a high set to the neck.
Frame size is important because if the ideal slaughter-ready lamb is around 40kg that lamb should be at that weight without being too fat. So ask yourself if your lamb is tall and long enough to have the capacity to grow a big rack of ribs, loins, and legs.
Frame size is important for breeding ewes because they need to be able to comfortably carry lambs throughout pregnancy, and have the capacity to feed them. The ideal animal will not look stocky, stubby, or gangly.
The soundness and structure concerns the animal’s ability to move around comfortably for years to come, so evaluate the feet, pasterns, hocks, knees, rump, and shoulders.
All toes should be pointed forward, and pasterns should be
about a 45 degree angle from the ground.
The knees should be straight and pointing forward just like the toes. When standing comfortably on their own, the farthest point on the twist should fall exactly in line with the point of the hock, if the hock is further out than the twist the animal is sickle, and if it is further in than the twist your animal is posty.
The top of the shoulders should be in line with the front of the rump, but from hips to dock you want a slight slope downward. Also evaluate the length of the rump. A lot of length from flank to twist is ideal, and remember, this is one of the best cuts of meat from your market lamb, so you want lots of room.
The degree of leanness is evaluating the fat cover. The thickest fat cover on your animal should be over its back, and ideally, it would be a centimetre thick or a little less, so when preparing your animal for show, make sure that they don’t have any excess fat. Besides, sheep don’t need much fat, they have all that wool to keep them insulated and warm.
Wool isn’t very important on market lambs that are intended for slaughter, but it is important for breeds that are meant to be raised for their wool. Wool is judged on character, colour, uniformity and wastiness.

trials are a competitive sport at the heart of every agricultural show in which handlers direct their dogs to move sheep around the show ring and into fences and/ or enclosures.
There will be plenty of this at the Ashburton show so be sure to get there early on Friday 28 to watch the competitors and their dogs take to the course.
Three sheep are always used in New Zealand, as this is the most challenging combination for the dog: the sheep form a two-and-one, with the single sheep always being unpredictable.
Dog trials are part of New Zealand farming history and probably date back to a trial in Wānaka in 1867.
There are reports of trials at Waitangi and Te Aka in 1868, at Wānaka in 1869 and Haldon Station in the Mackenzie Country, in 1870 – all before an 1873 trial at Bala in North Wales, which is claimed to be the first ever.
The first huntaway events were at Black Forest station near Lake Benmore, in 1870.
Dog trialling in New Zealand is controlled by the New Zealand Sheep Dog Trial Association (NZSDTA), which started in 1940 and is made up of affiliated member clubs.
The meetings start with the summer A&P (agricultural and pastoral) shows and culminate in regional and national finals around June (winter).
There are shepherds’ trials and maiden dog trials for less experienced handlers throughout the year.
There are four standard
classes for trials run under the NZSDTA.
The dog has to cast out, lift (move) and pull (drive) the sheep, usually held on a distant
hill (but not in the case of the show of course), in a straight line into a ring of 20–30 metres’ diameter on a flat area, towards the handler. Time allowed is 9 to 14 minutes.
head and yard
The dog has to cast out, lift and pull the sheep, which are held much nearer than in the long head, towards a marked quadrangle. It then has to drive the sheep along a pegged lane, through hurdles and work them into a 2-metre-square yard or pen. The handler is restricted to holding the gate. Time allowed is 10 to 14 minutes.
The sheep are released at the bottom of a steep hill (obviously, again, not at the show) and the dog has to drive (hunt) them up a zigzag marked course. The dog must always ‘face-up’ and bark at the sheep and not the handler. Time allowed is 8 to 10 minutes.
In this event the only markers are at the top of the course. The sheep have to be hunted directly up the centre of the course to the top markers, in as straight a line as possible. Time allowed is 8 to 10 minutes.
Dog trials are fascinating, believe me, even to the uninitiated. They make for a terrific viewer event. As I said, the trials at the Ashburton show start early morning on Friday, October 28. So if you are interested, make the effort to get up early and head down to the showgrounds.
Preparing for and showing cattle can be an extremely rewarding and educational experience for young people.
Responsibility, patience, good sportsmanship, good organisation, confidence, respect for animals and people alike – the list of benefits is a long one.
Perhaps your goal is to win a champion ribbon. Nothing wrong with setting high goals – we all do it and having something to work toward can be a motivating factor that can lead to success. If you don’t win a champion ribbon the first time out, the next time you’ll groom a little finer, and handle with a little more control and confidence.
week to teach your animal to lead. Always stand on the left side of your animal and use gentle pressure to teach your animal to respond by slightly pulling on the halter. Never yank. Once the animal is moving, release the pressure.
A show stick is a very useful tool when teaching your animal how to present itself. To pose a calf or heifer, the front feet should be squarely aligned beneath the shoulders with the hind leg closest to the judge positioned slightly back. You don’t want your animal to be too stretched out. Rather, your animal should be balanced. Once you’re in the ring, you may need to reposition its feet as judges perform their inspections. Do it discreetly and gently.
After all, that champion ribbon will bring notice to your animal. Positive notice. It also will tell folks that you are a responsible, skilled, and serious handler who knows how to care for his animal and presents an attractive product that, well, wins ribbons. Recognition can possibly lead to financial gain. What are your goals for the animal after the show season? To sell it? Or become a member of a replacement herd? Some farmers show cattle to showcase their herd genetics. A champion ribbon is a fine goal in and of itself. It may lead to other successes, as well.
Now it’s time to prepare for the show. Halter breaking is all about patience and practice. Go slow and don’t rush the process. You never ever want to hit your animal. Your goal is to earn the animal’s trust and respect. You’re building a relationship with your animal and that takes time, plain and simple. Have a gentle, compassionate hand and be willing to devote time to the worthwhile effort of teaching your animal to respect the halter.
It shouldn’t take much more than a
To maximise your chances of success in the ring, you’ll want your animal looking its best. Proper hoof care means keeping them trimmed. White spots should be bright and clean. The tail should be brushed and fluffy. The coat should be clipped and groomed and looking the best you can get it.
Before the start of the show season, make sure you’ve clipped your animal of its winter coat and begin training the animal’s topline hair. Then, a couple days before the show, clip the animal for the final time taking particular care to get it looking exactly the way you want.
Once in the ring, it’s time to let everyone see the results of all the hard work you’ve done. The ring should be big enough to allow everyone in the class adequate space, but that may not always be the case. Whenever possible, leave several feet between you and the handler in front of you. Don’t tailgate and don’t lag behind. Keep a steady pace consistent with the flow of everyone else. Do not pass the handler in front of you if they’re moving too slowly or their animal is unruly. continued next page

Improving knowledge of water health is just one of the many ways MHV Water Ltd is looking aer the environment for now and in the future.
MHV Water is a co-operave with over 200 farmer shareholders across the Hekeao Hinds Plains, to which it delivers water for irrigaon and manages environmental compliance.
MHV commenced roune groundwater monitoring of NO3-N (Nitrate) levels within the MHV scheme area in September 2016 with an inial survey of 29 bores, the programme has now expanded to regular tesng of up to 150 bores and 40 surface water sites.
MHV Water Chief Execuve Mel Brooks said the results of the ongoing ground and surface water monitoring are challenging to interpret given the large rainfall events, however they are confident that Nitrate levels, on average, have begun to reduce again.
Brooks said “our farmers are working hard on farm to reduce their environmental footprint and whilst we know there is more mahi to do, it is promising to see the downward trend return. Groundwater quality improvements are unlikely to be linear, and there is so much that we sll don’t know, so by increasing our knowledge we can make informed decisions to connue to drive long-term environmental improvements.”
Brooks is also posive about the whole community approach “In the Hekeao Hinds Plains we have several community and catchment groups who are working together for a common goal.
“We are a founding partner of the Hekeao Hinds Water Enhancement Trust (HHWET) which is undertaking the largest groundwater rehabilitaon project in New Zealand, and we are now partnering with HHWET and Barhill Chertsey Irrigaon to deliver a monitoring programme for the whole of the Hekeao Hinds Plains as well as working closely with the Mid Canterbury Catchment Collaboraon.”
If you want to know more about the Hekeao Hinds Water Monitoring Programme, the Mid Canterbury Catchment Collecve or want to get involved, see the MHV Website.
MHV will be offering the community the opportunity to get their water tested for nitrate levels at this year’s Ashburton A&P Show. Brooks said all people need to do is bring a clean 100ml container filled with water to the MHV tent, at site 311 and we can assess it for you.
“We want to help raise awareness and demonstrate the processes we undertake. Our Senior Hydrogeologist Jusn Legg is an expert in this area and will be on hand to answer anyone’s quesons.
“As a scheme, our responsibility is much more than just delivering water and we are proud of the role we play within the community and are happy to share results and acons more broadly.”
The Black Ferns have secured two wins from two games at the Rugby World Cup and booked a place in the quarter-finals with a game in hand.
The defending champions beat Wales 56-12 in Waitakere on Sunday –- scoring 10 tries to two – in front of a significantly smaller crowd than the week before.
The Black Ferns’ dominance in the early stages of their home tournament followed the form guide, but there are bigger tests to come.
Coach Wayne Smith was pleased to have two wins in the bank, though he still saw things on the field that frustrated him.
“Just some dumb penalties, you can train all week to avoid that but you’ve got to have the balance in your game to be able to avoid them and just leave it, get off the ground, get back behind the off-side line and play rugby.
“I’m really disappointed with how many

opportunities we gave them,” Smith said.
Black Ferns captain Ruahei Demant agreed with Smith’s assessment of the per formance, which saw New Zealand drop to 13 players late in the game.
“The way that we allowed Wales to get into that game was off our own mistakes and off our ill-discipline at set-piece de fence but also in general defence around rucks. So I know that will be a big focus for us moving forward, but I was proud of the way that we fixed problems that we had last week,” Demant said.
Tournament favourites England also se cured their quarter-final berth, with a 13-7 win over France on Saturday, and Smith was aware that the Black Ferns needed to measure up to the team that was on a 27game winning streak.
“If you look at England they never drop a ball and they give away very few penal ties. If they’re the yardstick then we are no where near it,” Smith said.

match so far in the tournament and he said he would do it again for Saturday’s game against a winless Scotland in Whangarei.
“There’s virtually no-one that’s played poorly, other than some of the penalties given away, and some of the discipline that frustrates me, no-one has actually played poorly and so we know we’ve got a strong 32 and I feel really fortunate.”
Demant was one of five players that had started both games in the tournament and the first-five said competition for places would increase as the tournament pro gressed.
“When we get to the quarter stages it’s going to be really hard for players to put their hand up, especially when there’s so many great talented players in each posi tion. The depth in each position is insane, I’d hate to be a coach.”
England captain Sarah Hunter is at her fourth world cup and was not expecting an easy route to the final – for any team.
“This has definitely been the most com petitive world cup that I’ve been involved in, we’re not even out of the pool stages yet so it’s sure looking like it’s going to hot up a little bit as we go through.”
The Black Ferns’ final pool game against Scotland is one of three games at North land Events Centre on Saturday – and the New Zealanders will be back in Whangarei for the quarter-finals.

Allenton’s Mat Bassett has added an other Lowry Cup singles title to his list of achievements on the bowling green, with a strong performance under the sun in Methven on the weekend.
Bassett, who is also a noted per former in the indoor version of the game, worked his way through a talented line-up of players who con verged under the mountains for the post-section stage on Sunday.
He bettered Methven’s own Craig Carter in the final, winning 21-18 in the race to 21 shots.
But getting there wasn’t easy – for either player.
Bassett had to see off the challenge of Ashburton MSA bowler, Gus Hur rell in the quarter-finals, before a tight game against Wayne McCarthy in the singles.
Carter took down Hampstead’s Logan Ford in the last eight and then beat young Allenton bowler, Liam O’Connor in the other semi-final.
O’Connor had started the day ear ly, playing in the first round for one of the final two spots in the top eight.
He beat Bronson Kellett first up and then got the better of Rob Fen som who was also victorious in the first round of the morning.
It’s been a long time in between drinks for Bassett who last won the title back in the 2015-2016 season.
The Kiwis have started their Rugby League World Cup campaign with a 3412 victory over a competitive Lebanon team in Warrington.
Josh Mansour’s try after 59 seconds put Lebanon ahead and, trailing 18-12 in the second half, they sensed a shock against the top ranked side.
But fullback Joey Manu showed his class to end the contest, setting up Dylan Brown after a line break before scoring himself with a solo effort.
Lebanon ended with 12 men after Adam Doueihi was sent off for foul lan guage.
New Zealand, world champions in 2008, are hoping to improve on a disap pointing 2017 tournament, in which they lost to Tonga in the group stage and then were knocked out by Fiji in the last eight.
Lebanon provided a sturdy opening test for Michael Maguire’s team, who next play debutants Jamaica in Hull next weekend.
The Cedars play Ireland, in what is likely to be a straight shootout for the second qualification spot from Group C.
Kenny Bromwich, Nelson Asofa-Sol omona and Peta Hiku crossed for New Zealand before halftime, replying to the opener from Lebanon winger Mansour, who was in Australia’s World Cup-win ning squad five years ago.
Jordan Rapana, who also kicked five goals for the Kiwis, completed the scor ing with New Zealand’s sixth try.
Trainers Bruce Tapper and Varma Ramhit set the cat among the pi geons at Ashburton on Saturday, when they produced lightly raced three-year-old Specialty to win the Barneswood Farm Stakes.
For good measure the combi nation also provided the quinel la with stablemate Redmond, however it was Specialty, a son of Rip Van Winkle, who claimed the major spoils at outside odds ($23) as he produced a powerful home straight burst to down a host of well performed contenders in cluding race favourites One Kiss ($4) and Perfectly Suited ($2.60).
Rider Brandon May had Spe cialty away nicely from a wide barrier draw before settling into the trail behind pacemaker One Kiss.
Allowed to stride forward around the home bend, Specialty quickly took control and dashed away from his rivals, with his sta blemate in hot pursuit.
Redmond tried hard but had to settle for second behind Special ty, who took bragging rights by just over a length with I Choose You and Charbano next to finish.
Tapper was delighted with Sat urday’s result, as he claimed his biggest win as a trainer with a horse he bred and races with his
“We have always fancied this horse, as he was born and bred on the farm and he has been spe cial since day one.
“That’s how he got his name,
and I thought that today he would show just how good he could be.”
Tapper will now turn his at tention with both Speciality and Redmond to the Al Basti Equi world Dubai New Zealand 2000 Guineas at Riccarton on Novem ber 5.
“The main aim is the 2000 Guineas for both of ours and they will most likely go straight to the race without another run,” he said.
“You don’t know if they will get the mile until they try it, but I’m confident they both will cope.
“It looks a pretty open race this year with a few of the big guns dropping away, so we would like to give our horses their best shot at it.”
Mid Canterbury jockey, Jason Laking continued his strong start to the season with a victory on his home track on Saturday, guiding the Ross Beckett-trained The Mo tivator to victory late in the day at a double figure price.
The win was Laking’s ninth for the season, just over two and a half months in, which coupled with his nine placings from just 50 rides give the experienced hoop an impressive strike-rate in the saddle.
played their rivals in a dominant performance.
And in one word John Sherratt summed up the effort from his own perspective.
“Proud,” he said.
Talk about finding form at the right time of the season …
Mid Canterbury will get a shot at Heartland Rugby’s Lochore Cup this weekend, after they pro duced their best performance of the year to beat North Otago 3115 on the weekend in Oamaru.
And that means a trip to the North Island this weekend to tackle the passion of Ngati Porou East Coast in Ruatoria. East Coast won their way through to the fi nal with success over Horowhen ua Kapiti in the other semi-final clash on Saturday.
Matches against the Old Golds in Oamaru are never easy tasks, especially when it comes to finals rugby – but the Hammers who turned up on Saturday finally showed the promise that’s been there all season, as they out
“It’s a pretty good feeling, and one I think we are all pretty keen to ensure we are feeling again next Monday morning too.”
While they weren’t arrogantly confident on the bus trip down on Saturday morning, there was an air of expectation within the camp that if they played to their full potential, they could be look ing at a final this week.
And as it turned out, that’s ex actly what happened.
“I think the big thing was self-belief. They knew they could do it and we went in with a game plan and executed it really well –the best we have all season, and it showed on the scoreboard.”
Things couldn’t have started any better for the Hammers, be cause within one minute of the match starting, they were on the board when Raitube Vasurakuta made the hosts pay for an early mistake by scoring.
Playing into a strong wind, North Otago came back strong and scored two tries of their own to wrestle back the lead, and they looked set to take a margin into the sheds before Hunter Stewart burrowed his way over just before the break, with Tom Reekie add ing the extras.
That gave the Hammers a 1412 lead – one they weren’t keen to relent.
“The halftime chat was pretty straightforward, I said to the guys
I didn’t want to hear them come back in 40 minutes time talking about the what-ifs and anything else, they needed to take control of the match and make sure it happened for them.”
An early North Otago penalty meant the lead changed again, but that was it for the hosts, as Mid Canterbury went to town and for 35 minutes had an an swer for everything thrown their way.
“You talk about moments in a game and there was one where Harry Burgess took the ball up and left a few North Otago de fenders lying on the ground be hind him; he got the ball off to Shepherd Mhembere and it was the same result, and next minute you look back and there’s just this trail of destruction.
“As a coach, those moments make you really proud. The peri od of play after that penalty was
fantastic, you could just see the guys really giving it everything they could.”
John Vasurakuta’s try from that forward movement put the Ham mers back in control, then when Nathan McCloy added another after 65 minutes, the Mid Canter bury lead was strong.
The final flourish of the game was a real moment though, as Mid Canterbury went almost the length of the field for Raitube Vasurakuta to grab his second for day – one in the first minute and one in the last minute.
“What made it special, I think, was the reaction of everyone who was there – the people in the stands and the wider group of players from our squad and the development team, everyone was pumped.”
In news almost as good as the actual result, Mid Canterbury came through the match un scathed with no injuries or nig gles to be really concerned about.
That means Sherratt and his coaching team can now start to plot a bit of revenge against East Coast, who beat Mid Canterbury in Ashburton earlier in the sea son.
“There’s a bit of unfinished business there, and perhaps a few wrongs that need to be righted.”
The results on the weekend set up a remarkable finals week end for Canterbury-based rugby sides. Canterbury will play Wel lington in the final of the NPC while South Canterbury will take on Whanganui in the final of the Meads Cup and Mid Canterbury of course in the Lochore Cup.
Two from two and going from strength to strength, it would seem.
The Tech Stags’ defence of South Canterbury Cricket As sociation’s Tweedy Cup took another step forward on the weekend as they picked up their second win of the season, in even more impressive fash ion their first.
Taking on competition new comers Celtic A, the Stags were again the dominant force.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, they opened up the shoulders and put together another imposing total of 251.
If there was disappointment it would have centred around not batting out their full 50 overs.
Matthew Tait led the bat ting charge this week with a strong 84 – facing just 66 balls and scoring 13 boundaries as he took the Celtic A bowlers to task.
His innings came off the back of yet another solid opening from Jason Morrison who set
the tempo early with a rap id-fire 51, raising his bat for the second time this season after
notching a century in the open ing week.
The hosts were in trouble with the bat early, losing quick wickets and were never able to recover, with just one of their line-up reaching double figures as the Tech bowlers ripped into their work.
Richard Print was the chief destroyer.
His 10 overs went for just 17 runs as he claimed a five-wick et bag for the day, while Harry Jones was also productive with the ball in hand, picking up three wickets for himself.
The competition takes an early break this week for Labour weekend with play returning on Saturday, October 29 where Tech will travel to Temuka and Allenton will host Celtic Sen ior on the Ashburton Domain Oval.
Unfortunately, full scores from Allenton’s match against Temuka, played on the Ashbur ton Domain weren’t available in time for deadlines, but Allenton batted first and were all out for 100 with Temuka managing to just sneak home, reaching 1018.
The Silver Ferns have beaten Australia 52-48 in Tauranga to take a 2-nil lead in the Constellation Cup, achieving rare back-to-back wins against the world number one side.
It was a very different game to the first test on Wednesday, when the Sil ver Ferns took an 11 goal lead after the first quarter.
The Diamonds made a far better start and led 25-24 at halftime.
The visitors put a lot of pressure on the Silver Ferns in the first half and slowed down the New Zealand mid court.
New Zealand turned things around in the third quarter, finding much more freedom on attack.
The Silver Ferns won the third peri od 15-9.
New Zealand shooter Grace Nweke scored 37 from 37 at 100 per cent, again fed well by wing attack Peta Toeava, who got another full game.
Captain Ameliaranne Ekenasio was another crucial player, shooting 15 from 19.
The series heads across the Tasman for the remaining two tests.
The EA Networks Centre was alive with action last week as Basketball Mid Canterbury played host to the Under 13 Southern Regionals tournament across the week. 45 teams from around the South Island were living, eating and playing in Mid Canterbury during the tournament in a real coup for local basketball, and the region. Daniel Alvey was there to capture some of the action from Mid Canterbury’s clash with Southland.
The sun was shining and sporting fields around the district were a hive of activity on the weekend. Guardian photographer Daniel Alvey was out and about capturing some of the action at Rakaia’s Salmon Run, junior tennis, junior cricket and on the softball diamonds at Argyle Park.
