Ashburton artist’s work launches Chorus calendar

Former Ashburton artist, Geor gette Thompson, will feature in Chorus’ New Zealand calendars for 2023.

Thompson saw the oppor tunity to submit a design to brighten Chorus’ telecommu nications cabinets around Mid Canterbury and chose to paint a helicopter view of the Mid Can terbury countryside.

“I love the green Canterbury plains but then, to get the per spective I wanted, I thought of a vintage Tiger Moth flying above it,” she said.

About 50 Tiger Moths at Ash burton Airport were used to train pilots during World War Two.

Thompson painted a kiwi, wearing a scarf in Mid Canter bury colours, flying the plane and added a couple of miniature kiwis in the margins to symbol ise her twins, Eleanor and Ed ward, who were born late last year.

She used acrylic paint to com plete the cabinet of a “plane above a plain” and submitted photographs to Chorus.

“They would have received hundreds from throughout New Zealand but chose mine as one of 12 art works for their 2023 cal endar,” she said.

“It was quite out of the blue to be selected and have my work enjoyed by lots of people.”

Georgette received $1500 for her painting and jigsaw that’ll be made from the art work.

Her painting, entitled Kiwis Can Fly, is the January image for the calendar which she’s “cool about”.

Georgette started painting “from the time I could hold a brush” and many of her paint ings have been sold locally.

Her mural features promi nently on an outside wall of Ash burton College.

She was guest artist at an Ash burton Society of Arts exhibition earlier this year.

A painting from another Ash burton artist, Amalia Worsfold, has been selected for September in the Chorus calendar.

A record-breaking number of spec tators, near perfect weather condi tions and a well-behaved crowd all combined to make Sunday’s Meth ven Rodeo one of the best ever.

Anywhere upward of 7000 peo ple flocked to the Methven Show grounds for the annual event, which returned this year after be ing cancelled in 2021 due to Covid, with a great spectacle put on show throughout the day.

Asked to describe the day as a whole in one word, Methven Ro deo Club secretary, Rosa Dekker chose two. “Epic, and amazing,” she laughed.

“Honestly, we couldn’t have scripted it any better, everything went so well.”

From first gates opening early on Sunday morning right through until late in the afternoon a steady flow of people came in the gate to

enjoy the action, and brought with them their best behaviour as well.

“I think the crowd was as good as we’ve ever had, they were having a great day out and there were no is sues we had that I know of which is just fantastic

“To see people back out enjoy ing events like this makes all the work organising worth it for every one.”

Continuing the good news from the day, there were no reports of injuries to animals who took part in the day, although Dekker did confirm there were a few banged up cowboys and cowgirls, though no serious injuries occurred.

“That’s always the best possible result, to get through the day and there be no injuries to animals or humans is the optimum goal.”

While not 100 per cent cer tain on the exact number of peo ple who came through the gates, Dekker said the Methven Rodeo Association were confident it was a record-breaking occasion.

“We’re looking at about a 20 per cent increase on spectators than any other year.

“We’ve talked a lot about how we

can get the exact number, but it’s pretty difficult with people coming and going all day.”

With the rodeo finished by late afternoon, revellers turned their attention to the Methven night life,

with bars and restaurants across the town recording impressive pa tronage through the evening and into the night.

A police spokesperson con firmed to the Guardian yesterday

morning that they had no inci dents to report, and that police were pleased with the overall be haviour of everyone in attendance both at the rodeo and about the township over the night.

A fresh face in governance

ing people and the environment to produce food”.

Megan Fitzgerald is breaking the mould of elected members in Mid Canterbury.

The 26-year-old Fitzgerald is by far the youngest person to successfully stand in the Ashburton District’s local body elections, winning a seat on the Methven Community Board.

She takes the mantle of the youngest from fellow community board member Richie Owen, who has some 15-plus years on her, and compared to the current crop of councillors-elect, Fitzgerald is half the age of the youngest member.

She is a fresh face and a youth voice on the local governance scene.

“I’m going to use the Methven Community Board as an experience to see if it is something that aligns with where I want to head in life. I’m really passionate about community development and I see the council as a pivotal spot for supporting our communities now and into the future.”

Fitzgerald will bring a younger voice to the table but said it’s not the age and gender of the voice, it is what it’s saying that should matter when representing the community.

“Everyone has their own natural bias and perspective, so having diversity on a board feeds into making more robust decisions, ones that represent a wider demographic of the community.

“We need representation from the older demographic and people in between.

Born and bred in the Methven area, Fitzgerald attended Lauriston Primary and then Mount Hutt College, before heading to Lincoln University to complete a Bachelor of Agricultural Science.

A keen hockey goalie, she has played for Canterbury, but suf-

fered a severe concussion in 2016.

“I had to stop studying and just take a step back, as it took me three months to recover.

“As I was getting back into things, I ended up working with St John as a volunteer on the ambulance for 18 months.

“I realised how important mental health and well-being are.”

It was a turning point for her.

She then got an opportunity to work in Malawi doing community development, and went to the Netherlands and studied international land and water management – “really around co-ordinat-

She continued with post-graduate studies at Lincoln, completing a master’s on connecting smallholders to high value vegetable supply chains in Malawi, spending another three months in Africa, and handed in her thesis at the start of the year.

As she was studying part-time for those two years, Fitzgerald also started with Wellbeing Ōpuke.

“It’s a community initiative trying to drive well-being objectives.

“We took it from a group of community members to a full trust with two employees.”

With her studies completed, she has taken up a part-time role with a farm consultancy business.

“It’s been quite a journey.”

Now she is embarking on a career in local politics, set to be sworn in as a Methven Community Board member on Thursday.

Fitzgerald joins returning board members Kelvin Holmes and Richie Owen as well as fellow newcomers Allan Lock and Robin Jenkinson.

Something needs to change

Fitzgerald said something needs to be done to make local government representation more accessible to younger people.

“I’m only working part-time which has enabled me to take this opportunity, it’s not because of the pay.

“As for the council, the reimbursement for the time and energy that goes into the role isn’t enough for people in the middle of their career.”

The problem isn’t only getting younger people to stand for the positions, it’s getting them voting and engaging in the decision-making process – but it’s a problem that isn’t just specific to the younger demographics, she said.

The Government is currently reviewing the future of local government and will be looking at better ways to increase engagement and participation.

Fitzgerald highlighted the need for a change in tactics to increase community engagement and said using social media is making things more accessible.

“It’s one thing I’m keen with the Methven Community Board is to look at how we get engagement with our community across different demographics.”

Advance Ashburton praises local philanthropy

the Ashburton College Alumni Association, have been created.

Other organisational funds, including Palliative Care, Firefighters Welfare and Wastebusters, Winchmore and Rakaia Funds, have been established for many years.

In just under 20 years, Advance Ashburton has accumulated $14.5 million under management.

Chairperson of its foundation, Mary Ross, in welcoming the community to its annual celebration on Thursday night, said the amount, invested in 48 different funds, has increased by 11.5 per cent over a five year period.

In the past 12 months four new funds, three from community people and the fourth through

“These funds can be added to by any interested generous person or group at any time,” she said.

Mary Ross paid tribute to many individual donors who’ve granted over $6.24 million since 2003.

“We celebrate you, knowing your often hard-earned money is meeting a need or supporting a good cause,” she said.

“You’re helping to make a difference in our own backyard.”

In listing projects the foundation has funded over the past few years, she referred to $92,000 an-

nually to the Boost Child Literacy programme for seven to nine year olds, $40,000 to the Boxing Academy and over $100,000 to the Rural Health Academic Centre for ongoing education of health professionals.

Other annual funding has gone to Hakatere Multi Cultural Council, Ashburton College Kohanga and 64 scholarships, over two years, to Ashburton district students undertaking tertiary, industry training or personal development education.

For the 12 month period, ending March 31, 2022, the foundation distributed more than $823,000 to organisations within the district.

Ross particularly addressed Advance Ashburton, the Mac-

kenzie Charitable Foundation and the Wilson Charitable Trust’s collaboration in making a threeyear seed funding commitment to the Christchurch based Family Help Trust for home-based visits to nought to five-year-olds.

She commended the volunteer time and energy given by trustees, sub-committee members, staff and Friends of the Foundation and farewelled executive officer, Vicks Johnson, who’s departing to devote fulltime work to her new business at Terrace Croft.

“The board and foundation are totally, unashamedly biased towards the Ashburton district. We are here to support and advance Ashburton which includes all its communities,” she added.

Labour weekend, a sporting feast

Ah, good old Labour Day. A holiday. Time to celebrate the eight-hour day working movement in New Zealand. Right?

Funny then that it turns out that more and more of us now need to work on Labour Day. How did that happen?

Regardless, at least working on Labour Day gives editors, with nothing else to write about, time to focus on the most important things in life – sport. Here’s a few random sporting thoughts from the weekend.

Feel-good story of the year

I’m not a massive golf fan, but this has to be the most weirdly wonderful, anything-is-possible story I can ever think of in dec ades of following and reporting on New Zealand sport. And I don’t think it’s getting the attention it deserves.

Kiwi Steven Alker, without be

ing rude, was basically a nobody golfer, who is now tearing apart the high-profile Champions over50 tour in the USA after qualifying to play in it last year.

On Sunday, Alker claimed his fourth win of the season and pocketed $US335,000 ($580,000) for winning a big event in Virgin ia.

Incredibly, that took Alker’s season prizemoney to $US3.25m ($5.5m) in what is the ultimate second-chance golf career. Because after having very limited success, and just two seasons on the PGA tour, Alker has somehow stamped himself as the finest senior player going, and that’s in

fields full of famous names.

An early frontrunner for New Zealand Sportsman of the Year? He should be but I doubt the judges will see it.

Talk about finn-ishing them off

Oh, Finn Allen. Finally, he produces the explosive batting we knew he was capable of, and on the biggest possible cricket stage, by igniting the Black Caps to a breakthrough World Cup Twen ty20 group play win over Australia in Sydney.

Allen’s 42 off just 16 balls, which including blasting a statement defining 14 runs off the opening over bowled by our usual nemesis Mitchell Starc, gave New Zealand an early edge they never relin quished to set up an upset victory over the tournament hosts.

The controlled hitting by Allen – selected over the experienced Martin Guptill – reminded me of a comment former Black Caps’

coach

The key for Allen now is to back it up.

Bravo to the Black Ferns

Who’s jumped on the Black Ferns women’s Rugby World Cup bandwagon? Lots of you, I hope.

The Ferns have joyfully remind ed all rugby fans just how good the game can be when played with a positive mindset.

Their pool play demolition over Australia, Wales and Scotland, and the excitement of their runand-risk attacking strategy, has been the best thing to happen to the code in years.

Can they go all the way? I’m not

sure. They still give the impres sion of adopting a helter-skelter sevens style to a 15s game, and they clearly have their problems with their tight forwards that could get exposed by cup big guns France and England. But let’s hope they win the cup because the game needs it. What it doesn’t need is the misguided belief out of the likes of England and France that their dour, bore me s… less pool play game was a “great showcase for women’s rugby’’.

That’s what England captain Sarah Hunter said after her team’s tough, snore-fest 13-7 win over France. Talk about self-delusion al.

As a showcase for women’s rugby, it really was as bad and as boring as it gets.

For the development of wom en’s rugby, we need to see the Black Ferns holding the cup aloft in a couple of weeks. Not Eng land. Not France.

Mike Hesson made about him a few months ago. Hesson, highly regarded as a Twenty20 coach in India and as a media analyst, said Allen was one of the few players in the world who could win you a game with his power hitting inside the first six overs. We saw that on Saturday.

Normalising mental health

Farmers packed into the Ashburton Hotel last Thursday evening to hear TV presenter come sheep and beef farmer Matt Chisholm speak about his battle with mental health and alcohol dependence.

The event was part of a nationwide Time Out Tour hosted by the Rural Support Trust in a bid to create conversation on mental health and resilience in rural communities.

Chisholm, who was recently named the inaugural ambassador for the Rural Support Trust, told the audience that he started drinking at an early age, and began suffering from depression even though, as a former host of TVNZ’s Sunday programme and Survivor New Zealand, he seemed to have the “dream life”.

“I just felt hopeless and I didn’t feel that competent and I want to be competent. It was a tough time,” he said.

He said he hoped telling his story to people also struggling would encourage them to ask for help.

“I’ve told my story a number of times now, and I hear from others stories like a 21-year-old farm worker who caught up with a doctor, or that a 53-year-old bloke’s gone off and had some counselling.

“And that makes me feel really good. I’d rather people find happiness than struggle away in their own head.”

Chisholm grew up in South Otago and felt “a bit different” in small-town New

Two Great Reasons

Zealand, despite becoming captain of the 1st XV rugby team.

He started drinking at 13 and reckons he was an alcoholic by the age of 20.

At some point he picked up a brochure on depression and found that he ticked every box. But he still kept quiet about it, despite John Kirwan and Mike King speaking openly about the issue by that stage.

“I was a rugby-playing country boy, a Lincoln [University] student and there was no way I would share what I saw as a weakness,” he said.

And there was the booze.

“There was no way I could just have two beers and go home. There always had to be more,” Chisholm said.

He hoped the Time Out Tour would play a part in normalising mental health struggles, especially among rural communities.

“Normalising this stuff is the key thing and then helping. I mean, what are we here for really, other than to make a contribution.

“We know that rural folk don’t fare well in mental health statistics,” he said.

“Part of that is the type of people that we’re dealing with as well – you know, tough, rural people, like those in the construction industry, hard-working people who might struggle to open up and talk

Mark

about their feelings, it’s perhaps not seen as a very masculine thing to do.”

Alongside his television work, and being on the road with his tour, Chisholm has a 29-hectare block at Chatto Creek, near Alexandra, where he runs sheep and beef.

He said farming could be an isolating experience, and that could worsen mental distress for some people.

“A lot of people work alone, and certainly don’t have those connections that people in cities will have, so that probably doesn’t help.

“So, we can spend an awful lot of time talking to ourselves in our own heads, and I think that’s where a lot of the problem is, for rural folk, or just for people who struggle a bit with the mental health in general, especially through tough times.”

The 2022 Time Out Tour is the first of three annual tours Chisholm will front in partnership with Rural Support Trust. Rural Support Trust Helpline: 0800 787 254

Cow collars save the day

“The logistics alone made mating manic and unrelenting,” Shefford said.

But three years ago, Hay made the move to fit both herds with heat and health monitoring collars.

Cow collars saved the day when Mark Shefford’s herd broke a fence down and went on a feeding rampage in a paddock of fodderbeet. As any farmer knows, fod derbeet, fed incorrectly, can be devastat ing for cows.

“We were able to use the data on the col lars to save cows,” Shefford said.

“It wasn’t so much on the first day when there were 278 alerts, but by day eight there were eight or nine cows coming in with health alerts.

“We were able to treat them to get them back going again. We lost four cows and without the collars, we would have lost a lot more, I’m sure of it.”

The 39-year-old dairy farmer was a for mer lower-order sharemilker for Geoff Hay. He ran two herds on two farms – 840

Collar monitors read movement 24/7, showing each cow’s activity and in turn alerting farmers to heats and potential health problems.

“I made a deal with myself that the day we put those collars on I was not going to buy another bucket of tail paint. I’ve kept that deal,” Shefford said.

His goal was to improve the six-week incalf rates from 68 per cent (done solely on visual heat detection).

He added 250 straws of sexed semen on the last season to make the challenge more interesting. His six-week in-calf rate lifted by 8 per cent to 76 per cent.

“When it comes to the collars, using sexed semen is definitely a no-brainer for me. Ideally, I’d like to mate with sexed se men twice a day over the top 370 produc tion cows in the herd,” Shefford said.

There have been two other areas where he said the collars were game-changers

– the colostrum herd and general health alerts throughout the lactation.

“Animal health is a big thing, especially during calving when you’re busy. Proba bly the bigger one for animal health is the cow’s rumination and where we’d like that to be before we let them leave the colos trum mob.

“I can also follow the progress of cows who have been calved in their first 10 days as a group.”

Shefford said the collars also eliminated under-performing cows from the herd.

“The one thing we don’t have any more is those really sick cows that can hang around the farm just until they are well enough to go to the freezing works. The collars allow us to get on top of those health issues earlier, so we avoid poten tially losing those cows.”

Drenching at tailing not all it’s cracked up to be

Sheep farmers need to carefully consider whether or not they treat sheep for worms during tailing as the sector looks to combat drench resistance.

Ginny Dodunski, programme manager at Wormwise, the na tional worm management strat egy, said treatment of all ewes at tailing was a demonstrated risk factor for increasing drench re sistance on a farm.

“The research shows produc tion responses to drenching ewes at tailing (improvements in body weight/condition, lamb wean ing weights or wool weight) have been inconsistent,” Dodunski said.

“At tailing, ewes will be natu rally regaining any worm immu nity that they lost over lambing, regardless of whether you drench them.

“Even when light-conditioned ewes have been targeted for treat ment, measurable production

responses to treatment at tailing have been hard to come by. How ever, a tailing drench can reduce dagginess in ewes at weaning.”

Studies by AgResearch (based at Lincoln University) have shown that routine treatment of all ewes every year at tailing is a risk factor for accelerating drench resistance.

“Treated ewes can be passing resistant worms for some months after drenching, and at a time of year where conditions favour worm survival and development,” Dodunski said.

Farmers should consider all their options for improving out comes for light ewes and their lambs

“Once tailing is done, your op tions open up – what can you do to take the pressure off, move lambs out of competition with their mothers for the best grass and continue to offer quality, high clover feed through to weaning?

These actions may be far more helpful than simply drenching ewes for worms,” Dodunski said.

For farmers who do elect to treat ewes, she recommends only drenching a proportion of ewes

to maintain some worms “in ref ugia”.

“The untreated ewes can con tinue to pass a low level of non-re sistant worms, to ‘dilute’ out the worms that may have survived

the drench treatment.”

Wormwise is an industry-wide partnership overseen by Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ), the New Zealand Veterinary Associ ation (NZVA), AGCARM and the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).

It works to provide farmers with knowledge and techniques to ef fectively and sustainably manage worms and minimise drench re sistance issues – lifting productiv ity and the welfare of livestock.

“There is much to be gained from management that improves productivity but also reduces the impact of parasitism,” said Do dunski.

“People may have the impres sion that the Wormwise pro gramme is all about mitigating drench resistance but it is so much more. It’s about improving productivity and sustainability and using all the tools in the tool box, rather than just drenching.”

Magic Monday provides plenty of food for thought

Black Caps turn up the heat

The Black Caps have started the T20 World Cup in style.

Magic Monday at Ashburton, it was dubbed, and it truly didn’t disappoint.

The day started red-hot early on when Republican Party blew them off the track in the Sires Stakes Sophomore.

The Cran and Chrissie Dalgety trained three-year-old took full advantage of the absence of New Zealand’s best three-year-old, Akuta, to dominate the $40,000 feature.

Driver Blair Orange was forced to press his hand early, engag ing in a speed duel with Natalie Rasmussen and Franco Mac that saw the pair street away from the rest of the field rounding the first bend.

Most would have expected the classy pacer to be vulnerable late, but he went from strength to strength up the straight to hold on for the win.

“He’s a very, very good horse,” Orange enthused in the post race.

Young trainer, Michael Purdon notched up another big win, early in his training career when Mystic Max was too good for them in the Hambletonian.

Again Orange was the master of delivery, pulling every right rein to get the gelding into clear air at the top of the straight where he ran down a brave Hot To Trot in the shadows of the post.

In winning, the son of Village Mystic set a new national record for the 1700m mobile for threeyear-old trotters.

Meanwhile, it was supposed to be a race for the big guns to

stake their claim, but the young pretender outdid them again.

And the win of BD Joe on yes terday’s Ashburton Flying Stakes confirmed any lingering doubts that he was a bona fide New Zea land Trotting Cup chance.

The Stonewall Stud pacer went all the way in the traditional Cup lead-up race, dashing over his last 800 metres in 53 seconds to win the Group Three fixture.

New Zealand handed hosts, defending champions and trans-Tasman rivals Australia a thumping 89-run defeat at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Satur day night.

It was the Black Caps’ first win against Australia in Australia for almost 11 years.

Sent into bat after losing the toss, impressive knocks from opening pair Devon Conway and Finn Allen led the Black Caps to a lofty total of 200-3.

Conway continued his red-hot form, batting through the innings to belt 92 from just 58 balls.

Up-and-comer Allen more than justified the selection call to put him at the top ahead of Mar tin Guptill, taking to the Australi an bowlers in a brutal innings of 42 from only 16.

Jimmy Neesham hit 26 off 13 after joining Conway at the end, including a six from the final ball to take New Zealand through to 200.

Captain Kane Williamson con tributed 23 from 23.

“I have to give a lot of credit to the way Finn played, because the way he played and the way he put them under pressure allowed me to get those balls that were slight ly looser,” Conway said.

“In T20 cricket, if you put bowl ers under pressure, no matter how good you are, it’s obviously a tough gig.

“Serious effort from him to day,” he added.

“Nice and calm, nice and re laxed and focused at the same time. Special knock for him, hit the ball really cleanly and put the bowlers under serious pressure.”

Australia never really looked like threatening their target as a clinical Black Caps bowling and fielding performance had the home side all out for just 111 in the 18th over.

Not only did New Zealand hold all their catches, including a bril liant diving effort in the deep from Glenn Phillips, every bowler used picked up at least one wick et.

Experienced seamer Tim Southee and left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner led the way with three wickets each, with Southee conceding just six runs from his 2.1 overs.

East Coast end Hammers Lochore Cup dreams

McCloy added another penalty, but East Coast extended through a try to get four points clear.

They stretched that lead fur ther with another try on the 55-minute mark, and at 22-13 Mid Canterbury looked to be in trouble.

There’s no Lochore Cup coming home for the trophy cabinet, but there’s a lot to look forward to in the Mid Canterbury rugby realm going forward, after a season of change.

The Hammers weren’t quite able to complete one of the more bizarre seasons in the union’s Heartland Rugby history by se curing the Lochore Cup in Rua toria on Sunday afternoon, losing to a passionate East Coast 25-20 in a gripping final.

And while the disappointment was evident in the faces of the squad and management, the de but season of John Sherratt at the helm of the squad has definite ly come with its positives as the environment and systems have grown – an exciting prospect for the years ahead.

Saturday’s match at Whakarua Park almost didn’t go ahead after a player in the curtainraiser to the final collapsed and died during their match. A blessing was con ducted on the ground by local leaders, and play was allowed to continue for the day, with a huge and colourful crowd in attend ance.

From the outset, it was evident East Coast weren’t going to take things lightly.

Their haka stirred plenty of emotion as they advanced on the Mid Canterbury line-up and really set the atmosphere for the match.

It was a motivation they carried into the opening exchanges too, a rolling maul from a long way out

from their first lineout saw them crash over to take an early lead and right then, it looked like a long day at the office was in store for the Mid Canterbury side.

They bounced back with a penalty to Nathan McCloy, be fore East Coast added their own three-pointer and really started to dominate the defensive bat tle of the game, forcing plenty of turnovers when Mid Canterbury did get the ball.

Some strong kicking also kept the hosts out of trouble as they plugged the corners, enforc ing multiple 50/20 kicks to give themselves good attacking posi tion.

But it was Mid Canterbury who turned the game on its head.

A charge-down and skilful pickup from Isireli Masiwini created an opportunity, and when he produced a no-look behind the back pass to Manasa Samo, the

big loose-forward was never go ing to be stopped as he charged to the line to score.

That brought the scores level at 10-all, and Mid Canterbury head ed to the sheds right in the fight.

With good momentum, the Hammers returned in the sec ond half looking for a little more fluency to their play, but were stopped at every turn by East Coast who continued to defend like demons.

A Raitube Vasurakuta break turned the momentum again though, as his pass was knocked back by an East Coast player and Nathan McCloy pounced on the loose ball, scooting 40 metres to score under the sticks with five minutes left to play.

Down by two points, Mid Can terbury went on the hunt again, but East Coast managed to with stand their challenges and put some of their own phase work together to earn a penalty, which they kicked through to go five points clear with time up on the clock.

From there the home side wore down the final minutes and kicked the ball into touch to mark an emotion-charged day for the East Coast region with success.

“It’s true Heartland Rugby here,” co-captain Tyler Blackburn said post-match.

“They really brought it to us and at times got the better of us; they deserved the win with the way they played.”

With their season over, an ex tensive review into the Hammers’ campaign will be conducted be fore work begins on starting the build up to the 2023 season.

In Pleasant Point on Saturday, Hanan Shield neighbours South Canterbury gained back-to-back Meads Cup victories with a dom inant performance over Whanga nui in front of a crowd of more than 2000 people.

South Canterbury won the match 47-36.

Close to 130 players from all around the country converged for three days of play in singles and doubles across multiple age groups. Mid Canterbury reclaim Ron Biggar Memorial

Markham

Mid Canterbury have started their representative cricket on the right foot by reclaiming the Ron Biggar Memorial with a strong victory over South Canterbury in Timaru on Sunday.

The first fixture for the season, and the first match with new

coach Bevan Ravenscroft at the helm, Mid Canterbury were ex cellent across the board as they recorded a 59-run victory in the annual pre-season match.

Under blue skies and warm con ditions, Mid Canterbury captain Des Kruger won the toss and elect ed to put his batsmen out into the middle for the first innings of the match.

The early loss of Angus Jemmett threatened to curtail those early hopes, but a solid partnership of 95 between Sam Clark (81) and Devon Flannery (47) steadied the ship, as they say, and Mid Can terbury set about building an in nings.

both Satveer Singh and Harry Jones lifted the total considera bly.

Singh contributed an unbeaten 53 from just 37 balls, while Jones kept things ticking over with his 22 not out as well to lift Mid Can terbury to 285-7 at the end of the innings.

With a big score in front of them, South Canterbury had some work to do and while a number of their batsmen made good starts, few pushed on as the Mid Canterbury bowlers piled on the pressure to roll them all out for 226 in the 45th over and reclaim the Ron Biggar Memorial.

Mid

South

At 161-2 through 29 overs, Mid Canterbury looked to be in cruise control and on track to post a big total.

But the loss of Kruger for 21, Clark for 81 and Lachie Jemmett within the space of six balls threat ened to derail that plan, as they all of a sudden were 161-5.

Will McKee changed the course a little with a valuable 27, and Will Southby chimed in with 20 to help lift the total. When he fell, Mid Canterbury were 222-7 with just over seven overs remaining.

A master-blasting display from

Four wickets from Lachie Jem mett and three for Jones did the majority of the damage for the green and golds, while Richard Print, Angus Jemmett and Singh all chimed in with a wicket each as well.

Mid Canterbury will now pre pare for their second and final pre-season match against Can terbury Country in Ashburton on November 6.

The Hawke Cup campaign offi cially begins against South Can terbury on the Ashburton Domain Oval on Saturday, November 19 and Sunday, November 20.

Ferns lose Constellation Cup decider

A week ago the Silver Ferns were sit ting pretty - 2-nil up in the Constel lation Cup and it looked like the Cup would stay in New Zealand’s hands.

A week later, the Constellation Cup is back in Australia and the Silver Ferns have got some work to do to get closer to their arch rivals.

The Australian Diamonds recouped the Constellation Cup after beating the Silver Ferns 57-53 on the Gold Coast on Sunday night.

The Silver Ferns led 30-25 at halftime but had a horror third quarter, which they lost 19-8.

Australia has now won the Constel lation Cup 10 times, to New Zealand’s two.

The score line was much better than Test 3 on Wednesday, when the Diamonds thrashed the Silver Ferns 62-47 in Melbourne.

Silver Ferns’ coach Dame Noeline Taurua said the first five minutes of the third quarter hurt them big time.

“Two offensive contacts and a missed shot … then we’re on the back foot,” Dame Noeline said.

Australian shooters Sophie Garbin and Steph Wood started running rings around the New Zealand defenders.

“Defensively we got caught on the back and there was a lot of speed, they got onto the circle edge. We got caught into catch-up mode in our de fence end, couldn’t stop it, couldn’t plug it.”

Dame Noeline was pleased the Ferns were able to improve to win the final quarter but lamented her side’s ability to execute in crucial moments.
