a scheduled re-opening of Thursday at this stage.
Lewis said the local business communi ty will have been awoken now the ram raid bubble has broken in Ashburton.
Ashburton is no longer immune to ram raids after Stirling Sports had a car drive through the store’s front facade and travel almost clean through the back wall.
Franchisee Matt Lewis said it was disap pointing to see that ram raids had made it to Ashburton.
“They’re definitely here and unfortunate ly it’s par for the course now.
“They’re just kids,” Lewis said.
Ram raids have become a popular way
“Around 3.45am police were called to a store on Tancred Street, Ashburton after a vehicle was used to gain entry to the store,” a police spokeperson said.
“One of the youths was left behind by their accomplices.
“Following the burglary one offender, a youth, was transported to hospital in a moderate condition.”
The stolen goods are still being accounted for, but because of the damage to the shop it will lose at least three days’ business, with
“”I think everyone will be extra vigilant moving forward. I hope it doesn’t happen to anyone else or us again.”
Lewis was amazed at the support he has received from local businesses with the community rallying around him. “A few of the guys in the Arcade have come over and seen if we needed a hand with anything.”
He has already begun the initial investiga tions into putting bollards outside the store front to prevent a future attack.
“We’ll go down the track of bollards, and hopefully we can get those installed in the next few weeks.”
New Zealand will gain a one-off public holiday on September 26 to mark the passing of the Queen.
During the public holiday a special memorial service will be held at the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul, which the late Queen laid the foundation stone for in 1954.
“Queen Elizabeth II was an extraordi nary person and I know many New Zea landers will appreciate the opportunity to both mark her death and celebrate her life,” Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said announcing the holiday.
The public holiday coincides with the Ashburton Market Day organised by Carol Johns, who said the event would continue as it was too late to cancel.
The public holiday announcement was the first of two made by the PM in her post-cabinet meeting press confer ence yesterday.
The second major announcement was the Covid traffic light system being scrapped from midnight last night.
The main change will be the remov al of mask mandates in all areas apart from healthcare and aged care facilities.
Individual organisations can still re quire masks at their own discretion, but it will no longer be a government en forced rule.
Vaccine mandates will be dropped in two weeks, and incoming travellers will no longer have to be vaccinated and household contacts will no longer need to isolate.
Since the spike of the Omicron out break Covid-19 cases have lowered to their lowest point since February this year.
“New Zealand is in a position to move forward”, she said.
“Finally, rather than feeling that Cov id dictates what happens to us, our lives, and our futures, we take back control.”
candidate would strive to get better “but it is a very difficult task and one that frustrates us all”.
Keeping rates rises in check was also a common thread, but was often followed with potential new projects.
Not surprisingly, the need for a second urban bridge was also a hot topic.
councillor Stuart Wilson, a member of the audience, calling out ECan candidate Peter Trolove’s claims around nitrates as “rubbish”, with the two verbally sparring over the issue.
Potholes, second bridge, and rates.
There were no surprises in what the big three topics for discussion at the Ashburton Citizens’ Association’s meet the candidates on Sunday.
The Mayoral, Ashburton ward and Environment Canterbury candidates all had three minutes to pitch their case to the crowd of over 200 before the floor was opened to question time.
At times it felt less like a job interview for the candidates than a complaints session, with sitting Mayor Neil Brown having to front up with answers and explanations, with his opponent, Jeff Swindley, unable to attend.
Most candidates touched on potholes and the state of the roads being a key concern, but few solutions were put forward.
Carol Johns said an option of deferring non-essential projects, such as the Baring Square East upgrade, could free up money for roading repairs.
Former councillor Russell Ellis said the state of the roads were something every
Bev Skates didn’t hold back, saying the council was “pussy-footing” around the second bridge issue and we shouldn’t be “begging for money” to build it.
Skates also railed against rate rises but later reeled off a list of projects she believed the council should undertake, including a trampoline arena. But none of her ideas included more funding for our roads to which a member of the crowd questioned “where does this fit with your rates reduction?”.
David Stewart asked the candidates to pronounce the new name for the council’s new library and civic centre - Te Pataka a ka Tuhituhi and Te Waharoa a Hine Paaka.
“Wouldn’t Ashburton be a lot simpler than the name you have got now, which is about 50 letters long?,” Stewart asked.
The question received laughter and applause and was handled with aplomb by existing councillor Leen Braam, saying the name was a gift from Arowhenua and if people don’t like it they could just call it the library and civic centre.
The fireworks were set off by retiring
Questions also raised included what candidates plan to do to increase accessibility, how the UN agenda 2030 impacted candidates’ decision thinking, Maori wards.
The only time Tony Todd spoke after his introduction was to criticise co-governance, which he said was “totally undemocratic”.
Co-governance is the Crown meeting its obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi and giving Maori seats around the decision-making table, and is about governance, not ownership.
Phill Hooper was asked about the increasing use of Te Reo and said it is a beautiful language. He also agreed with Act leader David Seymour that it was a shame it was being “forced’’ upon some people and should happen organically.
Ashburton District Council candidate Shfire Sapphire says she wants a “world free of mandates”.
Sapphire, who is standing for one of five Ashburton ward seats at next month’s Local Government elections and also the Braided Rivers Community Trust, made that point as part of a passionate performance in the meet the candidates meeting on Sunday.
Sapphire, who also said she was a prochoice and a believer in true democracy, was also the only candidate to offer a response other than no during question time when the subject of the controversial Voices For Freedom (VFF) group was raised.
Former Mayor and Ashburton Citizens’ Association secretary, Donna Favel, asked all candidates to declare if they were associated with the VFF group.
“I follow VFF on social media, I also follow Operation People and Chantelle Baker,” Sapphire said.
“I am very open about who I follow.’’
Baker is a prominent anti-mandate protester, who was recently booted from Facebook after allegedly sharing harmful disinformation to her platform.
Sapphire said everyone was entitled to their own opinion and she would listen to all the opinions before making her own decision.
“I won’t be told by the Government, and I will not be told by alternative media what to think,’’ she said.
“I will do the research and I will put my own mind to it and decide what I think about something.”
She shouted “freedom of speech” as she returned to her seat but not before she had also laid out her grand plan for “Ash Vegas where dreams come true”.
Among her ideas she pitched included Ashburton having a “university offering every degree imaginable”, specialist doctors, a mall and music festivals.
“We could even have our very own sky tower.”
Her vision was to put Ashburton on the map.
“A place that everyone wants to live and visit.
“Let’s dream big.”
At no point did she address how funding any of those plans and innovative ideas could work.

PHOTO JONATHAN LEASK/LDRKing Charles III will be invited to re-open ChristChurch Cathedral in about five years’ time.
The Bishop of Christchurch, Right Rev. Peter Carrell, in Ashburton on Sunday, said King Charles, then Prince of Wales, was appointed patron of the restoration project when he visited in 2019.
“I met him on that occasion and wish him all the best now he’s our sovereign,” he said.
While Charles, as king, will divest him self of many of his responsibilities, Bishop Carrell is hoping he’d include the re-open ing in a future visit to New Zealand. The cathedral is due for completion in either late 2027 or early 2028.
He was surprised to know Queen Eliza beth had referred to the transitional cathe dral as the “horrible cardboard cathedral” and hoped it wouldn’t be built, but Bishop Carrell said “it’s turned out better than she feared” and she would’ve been delighted with progress on the existing building.
Bishop Carrell visited Ashburton to de-dedicate St Peter’s Church, Allen ton. The building hasn’t been in use as a church for four years, and he led a service
to “lift it from the commitments of a dedi cated building”.
“There’s always a sadness when a church closes,” he said. “We prefer to have churches filled with worshippers every Sunday, but church is about mission rath er than administration.”
St Peter’s is currently for sale by tender
and Bishop Carrell would “love to hear it put to use for another constructive pur pose rather than being bulldozed over”.
Nearly 30 parishioners attended the de-dedication comprising Bible readings, prayers and hymns and, during the ser vice, several spoke about their experiences as parishioners.
Just over 100 years ago Fred Barnard said “a picture paints a thousand words”.
It’s certainly true of an intimate conversation shared between Queen Elizabeth and Ashburton Mayor, Er nest Bathurst (Batty), early in 1954.
In a photo, captured by the Ashburton Guardian, a radiant Queen is looking down at a note the mayor is holding in his hand.
Bathurst, a little embarrassed, is also laughing with relief. No-one else appears to notice. It’s a shared joke between them both.
As told by Bathurst afterwards, he was part way through his speech of welcome to the Royals when, possibly overawed by the occasion, he lost his place.
For a moment he didn’t know what to do. It took Queen Elizabeth to lean over, point to his speech and tell him what his next words were.
“You’re a pal,” he replied, touching her arm and car ried on.
After, when his greeting was over, they relived that moment together, with the Guardian photographer recording the photo that said more than 1000 words of description.
A memorial service for Queen Elizabeth will be held at St Stephen’s Anglican Church on Thursday, September 15, at 12 noon.
Vicar’s warden, Roger Paterson, who’s organising the event, said it’s open to everyone who wants to pay their respects to the Queen and her 70-year service to the UK and the Commonwealth.
“It’s an opportunity to celebrate her life and offer prayers for the reign of King Charles III.”
Queen Elizabeth was head of the Church of England and the service will be led by Rev Bob Dorans, a retired An glican vicar.
However Paterson emphasises the ser vice is for people of all denominations and those in the community who wish to attend and commemorate her life.
“We’re holding it at midday so people can come and go during their lunchtime while others can stay for the duration of the service,” he said.
Details of the service are being con firmed today.

We’ve all made sacrifices to get where we are today. But thanks to our hard mahi, we can now safely retire the COVID Protection Framework (traffic lights).
With cases low, access to anti-viral medicines and most of our population vaccinated, it is now safe to retire the traffic light system.
Protecting lives and livelihoods remains the goal of our COVID response. We can now do that and provide greater certainty for people, their whānau, and businesses at the same time.
We still need to do our part to protect our health system and slow the spread of COVID.
We’re required to keep doing two familiar things:
If you test positive, isolate for 7 days.
COVID-19 has taken a toll on everyone’s mental health. Effective mental health tools are available to help people recover from the impact of the pandemic.
Find them at Covid19.govt.nz/mentalhealth
There are measures still in place to keep us safe from the virus. Anti-viral medicines are available to those aged 65 and over, and Māori and Pacific Peoples aged 50 and over. This helps to protect at-risk people and communities, and help them get better, faster. There are systems in place to continue monitoring wastewater and the international COVID situation. Testing is available for international arrivals to keep track of any new variants entering the country.
This approach will keep us informed and safe, and you will be notified if there is anything to be aware of, or any action required.
Wear a mask when visiting health, disability and aged care facilities.
Everyone should also:
1. Stay up to date with their vaccinations.
2. Seek treatment if you or your whānau are unwell.
3. Wear a mask when visiting people who are at high-risk of getting seriously ill from COVID.
Some places, such as workplaces, special events, or marae may ask people to wear a mask as a condition of entry.
If there is a dangerous new variant or pressure on the health system, some requirements may be temporarily introduced to manage the impact of the virus. These are familiar to us and will always be temporary.
The past two and a half years have taught us a lot about COVID. But this virus is no longer the great unknown. We now have the tools to stay safe if we encounter any new variants in the future that put pressure on our health system.
It is not often a gathering of farm ers down in the South Island get to hear directly from the world’s top chefs. But at the Headwa ters “muster” held in Wanaka last month, the 120 farmers who supply Headwaters with Lumina lamb heard how and why their lambs were so important to the restaurant sector.
It is all about the fat, farmers were told via video from restau rants in Las Vegas, Palm Springs, and Taipei. An intramuscular mi cro-marbling rich fat with Ome ga-3 that has become so impor tant for chefs and diners alike.
Dan Harper, who owns Quartz Hill Station in the hills of Mid Canterbury with his wife Geor gie, farms Lumina lamb.
“Headwaters is like a big fami ly, we are proud that we are doing something different and that as part of that, we are also making a difference.
“We are a farming family. It is in our blood, I want my children to feel the same pride about what they do,” Harper said.
“At Headwaters we are all like-minded, we want to produce the world’s best lamb and do it in the right way. Hearing from those chefs what they love about Lumi na gave me goosebumps, and seeing Lumina lamb on a menu, knowing it comes from this small group of farms here in New Zea land means a lot.
“We are not just putting our lambs on a truck at the farm gate – we remain connected to the end product and are inspired to make it the best.”
The ewes which were devel oped with a unique constitution to survive New Zealand’s high
country 15 years ago have be come the matriarchs of the pre mium protein.
And consumer demand for Lu mina lamb has driven significant growth at Headwaters which has seen the volume of Lumina lamb go from 50,000 lambs to 104,000 in 12 months – in a market where supply is diminishing.
Headwaters has plans to dou ble the number of farms that supply Lumina lamb to satisfy growing demand for the product
from the global restaurant trade.
“But this is not about volume, it is scaling with purpose and about contributing to a thriving sheep and beef sector in New Zealand, helping farmers grow businesses worth handing over to the next generation, and en suring that sustainably produced New Zealand lamb stays on the menu globally.
“All thanks to New Zealand sheep farmers,” Headwaters gen eral manager Dan Saunders said.

Environment Canterbury has released two new reports on groundwater quality in the re gion.
Groundwater science manag er Carl Hanson said the report on Annual Groundwater Quality Survey summarises the current state of groundwater quality throughout the region and pro vides analysis of trends over the past decade
The Risk Maps of Nitrate in Canterbury Groundwater 2022 report, produced every second
“These reports give a general picture of groundwater quality. Bore owners are responsible for their individual supplies. With the heavy rainfall the region has experienced this winter, we strongly recommend that people have their well water tested and make sure it is safe to drink.”
The annual groundwater quality survey takes place each spring, when groundwater levels are usually highest. Environment Canterbury collects samples from wells to help understand the state of the resource and as sess changes in water quality
over time. “The results in the lat est groundwater report are what we expected,” Hanson said.
“They are similar to most years, noting that these are ‘snapshot’ surveys.”
Groundwater is vulnerable to contamination, including E. coli and nitrate.
For the 2021 survey, 327 wells were sampled region wide. E. coli was detected in samples from 29 (9 per cent) of these wells, and samples from 34 (10 per cent) of the wells had nitrate concen trations above the Maximum Acceptable Value (MAV), the na tional drinking water standard set by Taumata Arowai.
The MAV is 50 milligrams per litre for nitrate, equivalent to 11.3 milligrams per litre of nitrate-ni trogen.
“The 10-year trend analysis shows that nitrate concentra tions continue to increase in groundwater across the region,” Hanson said.
“All wells with nitrate and E. coli above the MAV are privately owned. The owners of these wells have been notified. Most of the wells are not used for drinking water.
“Some owners have installed filters if they are drinking the water. Others have replaced the wells, but we still monitor old wells for our long-term trend analyses.”
The Risk Maps of Nitrate in Canterbury Groundwater 2022 shows the risk of shallow ground water exceeding the MAV.
“The latest maps contain only minor changes from the previ
ous version from two years ago,” Hanson said.
Nitrate concentrations in Can terbury groundwater have been increasing for many years, due largely to nutrient losses from agricultural land.
“Environment Canterbury takes nitrate very seriously,” Hanson said.
“We have some of the strictest land-use rules in New Zealand to protect the region’s water quality. Over time, these steps will help ensure that less nitrate enters Canterbury’s water.”

“This is a challenging time for pig farmers and the industry.
“The sector has significant concerns about the impractical regulations in the draft Code of Welfare and a growing wave of imported pork produced using practices that are illegal in this country.
“NZPork is certainly up for the challenge, advocating hard on behalf of our farmers and pressing for food security to be maintained for all New Zealanders.
“New Zealand’s pork sector is a small but proud industry with a strong environmental record. It is important to ensure that the sector can thrive and that pig farmers can continue to provide nutritious high quality New Zealand born and raised pork, farmed to high welfare standards.”

Tributes and stories about the late Queen Elizabeth II continue to emerge, and so they should.
From royals to presidents, sports stars to Hollywood celebrities, to people all over the globe, thousands have shared memories and their sadness at the death of the 96-year-old monarch.
Even British children’s character Paddington Bear got in on the act. The lovable bear, who surprised and delighted fans by appearing with the Queen earlier this year in an adorable video during her Platinum Jubilee, gave a marmalade-sweet send off from his official Twitter account, reading simply: “Thank you ma’am, for everything.”
The plaudits and recollections reminded me about a cracker of a yarn I heard many years ago involving New Zealand running
legend Dick Tayler, who shot to fame when he won the 10,000m gold medal on the first day of the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch.
Tayler, who is now 74 and lives in Waikouaiti, about 40km north of Dunedin, was presented with his gold medal by Prince Philip. The Duke of Edinburgh and the Queen were on a Royal tour of New Zealand when the Games were on.
But Tayler’s gold medal wasn’t the only cherished memory from those Games because he also spent time with the Queen on her ship, Royal Yacht Britannia.
Tayler was one of just a handful of New Zealanders invited to lunch with the Queen on the yacht docked at Port Lyttelton.
“And I was her personal invite,’’ Tayler re-told his story many years later.
invite came that his mother told him not to go to avoid embarrassing himself and the country.
The Queen’s staff told Tayler not to worry because they would brief him on what was required.
One of her helpers turned up
I was that nervous.’’
Tayler, with his shirt ironed correctly and necktie sitting properly, arrived at the yacht’s ramp where he was greeted by one of the Queen’s staff with last minute instructions.
“He said the Queen will come out, followed by the Duke of Edinburgh. She may or may not shake your hand, but if she does then don’t squeeze her hand. Just gently shake it. Then you call her your majesty and then ma’am.’’
“I sat with the Queen during the lunch.’’
Sitting with her Majesty was probably the easiest part of the day for Tayler, who remembered feeling “terrified’’ at the prospect of ensuring he followed the correct protocols and royal etiquette.
He was so concerned when the
to see Tayler before the big day, showing him how to correctly iron his shirt and how to use a Windsor knot for his necktie.
“And we had to wear aftershave, but I didn’t have aftershave,’’ Tayler said.
“So, I went and bought the biggest bottle of Old Spice I could find and tipped it all over myself.
That made Tayler even more terrified, convinced he would get it wrong.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): If no one else is taking charge, assume the authority. Handle each issue as it comes to you and as quickly as possible. Delaying problems will only result in bigger problems.
TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): What is commonplace to you will be a novelty or even a wonder to someone from a different place. Sharing your culture will open your eyes, ears and taste buds to what’s great about it.
GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): The benefit to keeping communication short and to-the-point is both social and financial. You will be heard, understood and paid. People respect how you value time.
CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): As good as you may feel about your ability to handle details, there will be simply too many of them to juggle and still feel calm and relaxed. The answer is a checklist or an assistant -- more likely, both.
LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): A project you thought was completed will need to be deconstructed and rebuilt differently. The willingness to go through the exercise is what sets the pros apart from the amateurs.
VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): You figure out how to get the most out of the least. These limitations do not limit your capacity for glamour and could in fact give birth to the best elements of your style.

LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): Make a plan, and move through it quickly, leaving no room for doubt or overthinking. With elegant simplicity, you will hit your marks and move to the next level.
SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): To open yourself to criticism makes you vulnerable while giving you an edge. Not all vulnerability is weakness, and not all criticism is negative. You’ll get just what you need to improve.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Are you willing to go one step further? Everyone who completes the course will receive a certificate, though only those who go above and beyond the requirements will take home the prize.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): The day plays like a coin toss. You surrender your problem to the whims of fate, and when you catch back up with it, it’s either just how you left it or the opposite of that.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Loosen your grip on the rules. Trying to make a thing flawless will prevent it from getting finished in time. You cannot go to the next step until you ship the thing.

Play is set to return to the MSA Outdoor Bowling Club this week with the resumption of Friday Triples.Age just doesn’t seem to weary evergreen Mid Canterbury trotter, Jerry Garcia.
The 12-year-old, who began his racing career as a pacer, but has found a happy home in the trotting gait in recent years, and picked up the 15th win of his 170-start career during the return to grass track racing meeting at Methven on Sunday.
Trained and driven by Leo O’Reilly at Rakaia, Jerry Garcia won nine races as a pacer before trying his hand at trotting and was actually retired from racing last year but brought back into work for another campaign by O’Reilly.
“My wife, Angela has done a lot of riding on him and we actually rehomed him, but he came back to us and seemed well so we put him back into work,” O’Reilly said.
“We built him up nice and slowly and he’s run some good races since coming back, but we thought this race today might be right up his alley.”
After a strong trial win on the Methven track a week earlier, O’Reilly pressed the button early to get Jerry Garcia to the front and from there, the pair never looked back.
Under their own terms they fought off all challenges to win by a neck and lift the gelding’s career earnings to over $155,000.
O’Reilly isn’t sure how much longer he’ll be able to keep racing one of the stable favourites, with restrictions in place around how old a horse is allowed to be before they are forced to retire.
“I’m not sure, but I think he has to finish racing by January, so we’ll have to pick and choose where we want to go with him from here.
“But he likes the grass and is racing well so hopefully we can get a bit more fun out of him yet.”
Sunday’s return to grass track racing was somewhat of a red-letter affair for the locals.
As well as Jerry Garcia’s victory, David Mitchell tasted success with his under-rated pacer, Asian Elvis. The five-year-old gelding claimed the second win of his 22-start career with a determined effort late for driver Sam Ottley to hold on and win from Apatchofgold.
Earlier in the day, local owners, trainers and breeders Mike and Di Heenan had success on their home track with the consistent performer, Trouble Supreme.
The son of Prodigal Seelster had picked up nine placings from 20 starts prior to Sunday, but finally broke through for his maiden success – on the most perfect of occasions given the Methven factor.
His previous 20 starts had net-
ted more than $14,000 in stake earnings for the Heenans, with the win taking him close to the $20,000 mark.
Driven by John Morrison, the gelding was buried away on the
fence, but when the gap came at the top of the straight charged through it to win impressively –signalling it won’t be the last time he makes his way into the winners’ circle.
Phill Hooper was the toast of the Tinwald Golf Club on Saturday afternoon, as he landed a hole-in-one on the par three 12th hole during the quarter-finals of the club championships.
Playing in the plate division of the championships, Hooper stepped up to the tee on the 112-metre 12th, and delivered the shot most golfers only dream of.
Although it took a while to come to the realisation that the ball had actually landed in the hole.
Citing his eyesight being nowhere near what it used to be, Hooper had to rely on the word of those in his playing group to confirm the shot had gone in.
“I hit it well, it landed just short of the hole and we’re not 100 per cent sure if it went past the hole and then rolled back.
“My eye-sight isn’t too good, so I couldn’t see it. But it was sitting up against the pin and then it just fell in.”
For Hooper, it was a case of history repeating, albeit nearly 20 years later.
He landed a hole in one back in 2004 ago as well, also on the Tinwald Golf Course, but on hole 16.
“The hole position on 12 on Saturday was difficult, I always hit a gap wedge on that hole.
“There was nothing different to the way I’d normally play it, I just hit it sweet.”
Landing the ace nearly curtailed the remainder of the round though, with a spot on the line in the semi-finals of the plate in the Club Championships, the euphoria of the
moment nearly cost him victory in his headto-head battle.
“I was four up after the hole-in-one but did my best to lose it from there.
“I managed to just sneak home on the last hole though.”
Hooper admitted their were a few celebrations in the clubrooms post the round.
He was one of two winners for Morrison, who was again the friend of punters later in the day when piloting Best Trio to victory for Ladbrooks trainer Dean Taylor.
The Mid Canterbury United Football Club reserves side capped o a remarkable season by finishing undefeated on the weekend with a 1-all draw against Hornby United. The side, who compete in Division Four, have enjoyed a season like most only get to dream of and managed to finish their campaign in style with a hard-fought performance. It wasn’t quite as happy hunting for the senior side on the weekend though, they went down 0-3 to Selwyn UFC in their final act of the year.
Checkers have been crowned Basketball Mid Canterbury Men’s A premier champions for the year, overcoming Formosa 101-92 in a gripping final at the Oxford Street Stadium. As part of the finals night celebrations a number of awards were also handed out, including the naming of the competition All Star Five which this year consisted of Riley Sa, Emi Guerra, Nick Fechney, Marc Juntilla and Cam Butler.
Mid Canterbury cricket is seeking registrations from local players from Year 7 through to Year 13 for pre-season training sessions at the Ashburton Oval Indoor Nets. Mid Canterbury Cricket intend on running four two hour sessions to allow more players to attend. The course costs $100 per player and will be held on in the first week of October during the school holidays. More information and registrations can be found through Mid Canterbury Cricket.

They’re a little banged up and in some areas looking a little worse for wear, but that’s the price Mid Canterbury had to pay to keep their Heartland Championship campaign on track in Kurow on the weekend.
The Hammers produced their best performance of the season to beat old foes North Otago in a golden-point thriller in front of a big crowd on Saturday afternoon, coming from behind in the final 10 minutes to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, winning 40-35.
In a game that offered a little bit of everything, head coach John Sherratt was full of praise for the ‘ticker’ showed by his men throughout the entirety of the match.
“It’s a big moment for us in a lot of ways, I’m very proud of them,” he said.
“To go through all the ups and downs of the match, but still have that determination when faced with golden point to get the job done is a good mark of where this side is at.”
If Mid Canterbury trekked south on Saturday morning with trepidation about the task in front
An early North Otago try was countered by two penalties from the boot of Tom Reekie, and then Celtic big runners, Isireli Masiwini and Raitube Vasurakuta, both injected themselves into the game and scored, with the Hammers leaving the Old Gold supporters stunned as they rushed out to a 20-5 lead which they took into the sheds at halftime.
“The intent early, and the way they went about executing the game plan was really pleasing.
“North Otago were brutal, they were very strong defensively and really took it to us in that area, but we absorbed that and took our chances.”
With a good lead heading into the second half, Sherratt said there were no illusions that it would be easy from thereon, and North Otago came out firing early doors.
That 15-point lead was quickly turned into a two-point lead for the hosts, and Mid Canterbury looked in trouble.
“That was a really crucial point in the match, it could have easily slipped away from us there – and perhaps earlier on in the season it would have, but we kept in touch.”
Manasa Samo scored a strong try to put Mid Canterbury back in front, and when Reekie landed
his third penalty for the day the game again looked Mid Canterbury’s to lose.
And they nearly well did.
A North Otago penalty, followed by a pushover try from a lineout pushed the Old Golds in front by two points with five minutes left in the match. It got tougher again when they added another penalty, leaving Mid Canterbury needing a try to at least bring the scores level.
What better man in a moment like that to give the ball to than Vasurakuta, who scored to bring the scores level, with Reekie’s conversion missing and taking the match into golden point.
“There was a bit of confusion there for a while, no-one really seemed to know exactly what was going on. The ref actually had to
run off into the sheds to fetch a coin for the toss.
“North Otago won it and elected to kick off, and we went about a few phases before Bonno (Logan Bonnington) crashed over to get the win.
“I think by late Saturday night, Bonno had run 45 metres, with 10 North Otago defenders on his back.”
With five competition points banked, Mid Canterbury now sit fifth in the standings as they ready for a tough run home with matches ahead against both South Canterbury and Whanganui in the last two weeks of the normal season.
They’ve carried a few injuries

Sometimes, like not very often at all, sporting fairytales do come true.
But this weekend we saw a rare triple treat of that phenomenon, played out over three wildly differing codes.
First up, the Canterbury girls were aiming to become Farah Palmer Cup champions, for the fifth time in six seasons, with halfback Kendra Cocksedge turning out for the hundredth time in the red and black, and her final match for the team, and that had to be some big-time inspiration right there.
And so it proved.
Cocksedge, a couple of years ago the New Zealand Rugby Player of the Year (that’s not just females, meaning it’s rarified Richie/DC territory) was absolutely on top of her game, knocking over four penalties and two conversions (a couple from the sideline), to go with a clever kicking game and superb distribution.
One of the tries also had her name on it, totally reminiscent of another blonde Canterbury halfback (also he was wearing black at the time) snatching enemy ball out of thin air and haring down the sideline from 45 metres out, with the defence swarming from all directions, but just making it to the inside of the corner post.
Fantastic stuff.
The team inspiration thing was probably also helped by the Auckland skipper claiming the Cantabs ‘don’t like physicality’. The ever-pleasing sight of a Canterbury scrum demolishing the one wearing blue-and-white hoops is just never, ever going to get old, whatever the motivation.
When Cocksedge was subbed with ten to go, the whole of Rugby Park (an arena steeped in as much Canterbury rugby history as anywhere) stood to applaud, and emotions were running riot.
Kendra Cocksedge, champion.
A day later, in the white-hot atmosphere of the NRL finals
competition, the Cowboys were staring down the barrel in their game against the hard-nosed Cronulla outfit at their Shark Park fortress.
The Townsville team, which used to be JT’s mob (Jonathan Thurston) but is now referred to as JT’s mob (Jason Taumalolo), were pretty much down and out, but with a few seconds to go, it was Taumalolo himself who crashed over, with the conversion pushing the game to extra time.
That extra time came and went, so golden point time and it
was ex-Shark Valentine Holmes, who had tried his hand at American football a couple of years ago, who stepped up from nearly 50 metres out and banged over a drop goal to take the honours.
After the game, coach Todd Payten wasn’t showing much emotion when quizzed about the thriller.
“I saw him miss three from there in the warm-up, but I wasn’t concerned, he’s a big game player, there for the big moments”, he said of Holmes’ match-winner.

Then, on Sunday, the emotion levels went into overdrive as a jam-packed Pukekohe Park cheered home Kiwi driver Shane van Gisbergen, in the very last time the Supercars will appear there.
With the Jason Richards Trophy up for grabs as well, the scene was set for high drama, and van Gisbergen delivered.
n a race with plenty of on-track action and safety cars, Will Davison had the final race in his grasp, but his pit crew blew it, then with
ten laps to go, van Gisbergen was running third, and no real show of winning with Aussie speedster Cam Waters dominating out front, on a track that was way too twisty, too bumpy and simply too dangerous for many passing manoeuvres to be made.
But Waters stumbled, just a little bit, van Gisbergen passed compatriot Andre Heimgartner to give himself the longest of shots at getting up, and with just two laps to go in the storied history of a great racetrack did just that, and yes, the crowd went wild, and went wild again when motor racing icon Greg Murphy handed over his crown as King of Pukekohe.
The stadium’s days of motor racing are nearly over (still a few local meetings to go there), but given the emotional outpouring over the last few days, many are wondering if the motor sport folks fought hard enough before handing over to the thoroughbred horse-racing crew.
Shane van Gisbergen, champion. Oh, and our cricketers were also involved in a big triple-result over the last few days, but luckily we don’t have newspaper column space to talk about it.
