Ashburton flatmates say a neigh bouring derelict house is a fire and health risk, which someone needs to do something about.

“(Dead tree) off-cuts are lying amongst them. This could be come a fire danger if someone flicked a cigarette into them or worse,” Shurrock said.

Guiney said most people could not see how bad it really was from the street because of the overgrown shrubs at the prop erty.At the front of the property, a do not enter sign is tied to the gate, followed by an overgrown tree tunnel to the side of the house. They’re also concerned about trees and shrubbery causing a second fire and the property be ing an easy target for arson.

Glen Shurrock and Pete Guiney flat together on Wakanui Road, right next door to an emp ty house in a shoddy state, which had not been occupied since damaged by fire in August last year.“After rain, you can smell the burnt odour,” Shurrock said, adding that in the summer months the smell gets even worse and attracts flies.

A view not to die for: Pete Guiney and his Wakanui Road flatmate are fed up looking out to a rubbish-filled and now health risk neighbouring property unoccupied since a fire a year ago.

It was a typical Mid Canterbury morning, the first day of spring – but as thousands of locals went about their usual morning tasks eight years ago to day, none knew just what the day would bring. None that is, except oneAndindividual.asRussell Tully walked into the Ashburton Work and In come office that fateful morning he shifted the landscape of this town, and the district changed forever. Perhaps that gives a man who deserves no credit, too much. But the cold truth is he did, just for all the wrong reasons.

Our town forever enveloped in such a dark day in New Zealand’s history.Thecountry came knocking on our doorstep. They wanted in, they wanted our stories and while at the time it was nice to have so much support. it’s waned in the years that have followed, yet the scars, for so many are still raw.And so, it’s up to us to remem ber today in the best way we can. And that should be by remem bering the smiling faces of Peggy Noble and Sue Cleveland.

This newspaper is subject to the New Zealand Media Coun cil.

It’s a hard emotion to shake.

It’s okay to be angry, to feel sad or frustrated at how things eventuated. But it’s equally as important that the over-riding factor in all of the memories from that day is of those two outstand ing people.

Two loving locals who went to work on September 1, 2014, but sadly, didn’t come home.

His actions since that day eight years ago have certainly shown he’s a man of little remorse for whatAndunfolded.so,we,as Mid Cantabri ans, should forget about him. He should become an irrelevant part of our history. Significant always, but most certainly irrelevant.

Those feelings and memories will never escape us. Some, sadly, more than others, and in ways which many of us will never be made to imagine. But it’s impor tant we focus our memories and our recollections on the impor tant aspects of that day.

The following day a small group of Tin wald Garden Club members presented a bench seat to Hospice Mid Canterbury. Our Club recognises the role Hospice Mid Canterbury fulfils in our community and thought it a fitting donation so both staff and visitors can sit and enjoy the garden while chatting or relaxing with a cuppa outdoors. We are grateful to the Menz shed for their willingness to assist us by sourcing the timber and building the seat.

The final item for the evening was Fer gus and Fiona again, joined by Fiona’s daughter Janet. Songs chosen this time were Moving On, She’ll be coming Round the Mountain, Cotton Fields and Bye Bye Love with the audience singing along as well.Alovely night of music. Thank you to everyone that performed and to Marga ret and Ian for organising the evening.

A beautiful day welcomed all the gladi ators into the Brandon arena last Satur day. They were all prepped and hungry for victory as the club champs round of 16 kicked off, to find this year’s champion Wegolfers.had some cracking games. No major upsets, but there were a couple of “well I didn’t see that coming” games, but when the dust had settled the wheat was defi nitely separated from the chaff, and we now have some great quarter-finals to look forward to.

A reminder that next Club night is Mon day September 19, 7.00pm play in. All welcome.

August is the month one thinks of lamb ing and calving, drilling, spring sunshine and unexpected downpours of rain; and for many of us this was the norm in our younger years. Wonderful but busy family times to recall. August is also the month the Hinds Women’s Institute meets in the Hinds Davison Room for its monthly Presidentmeeting.Valmai welcomed everyone, lead the Ode and Aspirations, asked af ter any sick members, thanked the Meals on Wheels helpers, initiated a discussion on the soon to be held Half Yearly meet ing at Wakanui and also potential entries for the Ashburton A&P Show’s Bay and Tray Rosacompetitions.deliveredtwo delightfully comical verses and mention was made of the re cent Quizco gathering in which the “Roy al kitchen Staff” team from Hinds won a 2nd placing.

Our hearts go out to all those in our nation, who have suffered and been af fected by recent flooding. As we know in Mid Canterbury, the toll, flooding can have on our Rural Communities is huge and the lasting effects can take longer to heal than first imagined. So if you know of someone who has been in the midst of flooding, keep in contact with them, well into the future.

Thirty-four members enjoyed local artist, Barbara Jaine, on the topic “The Garden through an artist’s eyes”.

FinallyMac.

Using a posy of rose hips Barbara provid ed an interesting demonstration, initially sketching the details and then painting with watercolours. The end result in such a short period of time was impressive and showed Barbara’s skills honed by many years of painting. During the demonstra tion many interesting facts were offered regarding the artist’s preferred choice of paper, paint, artist brushes, pencil type, framing choices and her approaches to creating a painting in varying climatic conditions. She commented that there are certain plants she prefers to paint, others she would rather not. Her prefer ence is to paint with the plants in front of her. We are appreciative of her artistic talent and being so willing to share her skill with a group like ours.

Lion Gill won the raffle, and the evening closed after the tailtwisting.

Netball tournaments can’t just be run with players though and the reliance on volunteers, particularly umpires, was again to the fore – but the buy-in from locals has been
