Timaru two years ago and it’s where I’ll spend a lot of my time campaigning,” he said.
He’s been selected as National’s Rangitata candidate for the 2023 general election and Ashbur ton’s second bridge issue is in his sights
He’s 35-year-old James Mea ger, who’s based at Lagmhor, and runs his own legal, advoca cy and regulatory advice firm, Oath Advisory in Ashburton, named after his four nephews, Oscar, Alfie, Theo and Harry.
If elected to Parliament, Mea ger sees fast-tracking a second bridge across the Ashburton River as a priority.
“We have the fifth largest roading network in New Zea land and the additional bridge should have happened by now,” he said. “National is the party that builds infrastructure, and we’ll carry through with that.’’
Another focus for Meager was what he called Labour’s wasteful spending “which is helping to drive up inflation and fuelling a cost-of-living crisis” that was hitting Rangitata families in the pocket.
“Pleas for much-needed investment like support for flood-stricken farmers, fixing potholes and funding the Ash burton Bridge replacement, fall on deaf ears,” he said.
He’ll campaign from his brother’s arable farm at Lagm hor, but Meager sees his great est challenge as winning back a large percentage of 16,000 Tima ru voters, who backed Labour at the last election.
“National didn’t do well in
“However, I’ll also be focus ing on Tinwald, Netherby and Hampstead to make sure peo ple living in those suburbs know they have a candidate to vote for.
“I was brought up by a single mum in a working class suburb in Timaru. We were poor but she put food on the table and taught us the value of education.”
Meager was head boy and dux at Timaru Boys’ High School and gained a bachelor of law and BA from Otago University before working for National MPs, Chris Bishop, Paula Bennett, Bill Eng lish and Simon Bridges.
He then spent three years with Simpson Grierson in Wellington and Christchurch as a senior so licitor in the public law firm.
While at Otago, Meager, who is of Ngai Tahu descent on his father’s side, was strategic pro jects manager for the universi ty’s Maori health workforce de velopment programme.
Meager who replaces An drew Falloon, who resigned in July 2020 after being accused of sending inappropriate images to several young women, also said he made a full personal life disclosure in National’s candi date selection process.
Meager said he had no back ground of bullying but admitted to “silly decisions of drinking and staying out late” as a teen ager.
National’s candidate selection process came under fire after Tauranga MP Sam Uffindell, who has now been welcomed back to the party, revealed he at tacked a younger student at high school and then faced claims of bullying as a university student.
rural setting, but still very close to town,” Green said.
Advance Ashburton is look ing for a new chief execu tive.
Victoria Johnson, who was appointed to the po sition early last year, has resigned to focus fulltime on her Terrace Croft event centre.
After two years of work it all came together for the official opening of the New Zealand Motor Cara van Association’s (NZMCA) new est park.
At the centre of it was local club member Garry Green who was one of the key people to get the park off the ground in 2020.
As a local, Green helped liaise with the NZMCA Auckland of fice to get the park off the ground from negotiating the lease with the Allenton Rugby Football Club, to working with the contractor ACL.
He was pleased to see all the work come together.
“It’s a win-win for us and the
rugby club, they weren’t using the space and now we will maintain it for them,” Green said.
Situated behind the Allenton Rugby Football Club, the park, of
fering 60 sites for NZMCA mem bers, becomes the latest addi tion to the association’s 54 parks across New Zealand.
“It’s ideal because we are in a
The opening ceremony had the full pomp and glamour which included the Ashburton Pipe Band leading a procession of vin tage cars carrying distinguished guests into the park, which in cluded NZMCA president Shar ron King, and Ashburton mayor Neil Brown.
“It is a pleasure to be here in Ashburton, I didn’t expect a ride in an E-Type Jaguar,” King said.
King acknowledged the work of the people that helped get the park off the ground, something that has become more difficult with more consents required than when the association started.
Brown said the park was a great addition to Ashburton, adding that Ashburton has a lot to offer for the NZMCA members who would use the park and explore Ashburton and the wider Mid Canterbury region.
Johnson purchased Ter race Croft, south of Tinwald, in December 2020 and was confident she could handle both positions but said this week her wedding, event centre and vineyard has burgeoned and already has 17 bookings between now and March 2023.
“It was a hard decision to make,” she said. “I’ve en joyed the opportunity for people making applications to receive a hand-up, not a hand-out.
“It’s been an eye-opener to see the generosity of Mid Cantabrians towards Ad vance Ashburton.”
Advance Ashburton is ad vertising for an executive officer.
Applications close Sep tember 26. Johnson said she’ll stay on until the new appointment takes up their position.
After months of pain and immobility, young Ashburton battler Chloe Peck is home from Sydney and walking.
Chloe worked hard at Sydney's Advanced Rehab Centre for eight weeks and her progress is nothing short of amazing, mum Alanna Peck said.
After a fall at school when Chloe was starting Year 7 in February last year, she suffered immense pain for weeks. She was diagnosed with chronic pain syndrome, but nothing seemed to help her.
In April last year her condition worsened and she lost feeling in both legs, leaving her wheelchair-bound. At that stage she was diagnosed with a functional neurological disorder, which is a problem with the functioning of the nervous system and how the brain and body send and receive signals.
Alanna explained that the health system in New Zealand was unable to fully cater to and help Chloe’s condition, so the family decided that Sydney’s Advanced Rehab Centre was the best option to help Chloe walk again, and they were right.
Within a short time she was managing to walk with the aid of crutches.
There’s still a lot of work to do and Chloe’s journey to walk normally, without assistance, may only be beginning, but Alanna said the past four weeks have “been the best she has been”.
To keep the momentum up, she was sup-
posed to be going to rehab at the Wilson Centre in Auckland, but less than a week before leaving Sydney, they were told they were no longer able to seek treatment there.
They wanted to see how she got on at home with everything organised there, and while the Wilson Centre may be an option later, the Peck team are back to finding their own way.
"It’s very frustrating, we are basically on our own again," Alanna said.
Alanna and Chloe arrived home less than two weeks ago from Sydney and are already missing their Sydney support team.
"I’m so glad that I found them (Advanced Rehab)."
At this stage, the family will be sourcing therapy where they can, and have enlisted the help of Cilla Anderson, owner of E3 Training in Ashburton, who will have weekly personal training sessions with Chloe.
"Cilla has taken on a big role," Alanna said.
The youngster is now attending the Southern Health School, which is a state school for students from Years 1-13 who are too ill to attend fulltime education at their regular schools.
Ashburton’s Child Development Services is currently providing weekly occupation therapist sessions and while it's far from the 15 hours of therapy per week she was having in Sydney, Alanna is hopeful it’s enough to keep the momentum going.
“If we had the money, we would still be in Sydney.”
Alanna and husband Russell Peck have had to re-mortgage their home to keep up with Chloe’s physical needs.
Chloe’s therapy didn’t come cheap and, Alanna said, the Sydney stint cost around $50,000.
However, 143 generous donors helped the family raise over $22,000 using a Givealittle page, which the family is eternally grateful for.
The Peck family are also hoping to hear back about their assessment with the Laura Fergusson Brain Injury Trust for Accident Compensation Corporation in the next few months.
“If ACC comes through, we have more options,” Alanna said.
She added that they plan on looking at admission to the Wilson Centre in Auckland later in the year.
They call it “iron fever”, an addiction for tractors, which was obvious at the 175th celebration for Massey Fergusons.
At the centre of all the excitement was Anthony Hampton, who organised the get-together with the Mid Canterbury Vintage Machinery Club, which the funds were being raised for.
“I was aiming for 100 tractors, I think we have surpassed that now,” Hampton said.
The original event was delayed to due Covid-19, but Hampton still wanted to do something to
mark the occasion.
Old to new, big to small, it had it all. The earliest being from 1928, and going all the way up to 2022 to show yet again that Kiwis love their Fergies, as they became known.
Massey Ferguson, the company, has been around since 1953 when Massey Harris joined with the Ferguson Company to create Massey-Harris-Ferguson.
That later was shortened to become the name that remains today, Massey Ferguson.
And it’s a name synonymous with Sir Edmund Hillary, who drove a little grey modified Fergie tractor all the way to the South Pole.
While tractors at the show may not have travelled that far to make it, they turned up to make the anniversary special.
“They have come from far and wide. I know one guy has driven his tractor from Rangiora, and through the Rakaia gorge,” club member John Hall said, who himself was displaying a number of his own collection.
The club now turns its focus to the Ashburton A&P Show on October 28-29.
So watch out for more of those wonderful Masseys on parade.
The government is pouring $80,000 into addressing what Ashburton College principal, Ross Preece, calls “a huge barrier to employment”.
Mid Canterbury has been chosen to trial a national scheme to help fund learner, restricted and full licences for secondary schoolaged students.
Preece said Mid Canterbury employers require students, joining the work force, to have “an appropriate level of a driver’s licence” but this is a problem for many families.
“Young people face the financial burden of a vehicle, fuel, registration and the cost of licences which are more than $100 each,” he said.
There’s no public transport in Mid Canterbury and many young people need wheels to get to work, he pointed out.
Preece welcomes the scheme which has been made available to Mid Canterbury secondary schools by the Ministry for Social Development (MSD).
“It’s a national trial and, if it succeeds here, it will be rolled out to other New Zealand centres in 2023-24,” he said.
In Mid Canterbury, it will apply to students such as those attending Ashburton College, Mount Hutt College and Ashburton Chris-
tian School to “remove as many barriers for them to get a driver’s licence”.
As an example it would be directed to meeting tuition costs for those sitting the three driver licence levels.
The scheme, which is already in operation, will run through until the end of July 2023 and MSD wants all the money spent by then, Preece added.
It will enhance a project Ashburton College already has in place for students to achieve their restricted driver’s licence. Working with the Salvation Army, it provides a programme, car and running costs.
“We make students available and the Salvation Army provides volunteer drivers to help them get their restricted licence,” Preece said.
At present there’s a waiting list of 12 students and Ashburton College
would like to hear from more volunteers willing to give two hours of their time a week.
The college also prepares students for learner licences as part of their teaching programme.
Ashburton College has been working with MSD and the community for three years to adopt the trial scheme and Preece is delighted it’s going ahead.
“Our region benefits,” he said.
The prototype scheme will give Libby Alford’s bank account “more freedom”.
Libby, a Year 13 student at Ashburton College, has a restricted licence to drive her Tiida hatchback to college, but the Ministry of Social Development funding will pay her costs from now on.
“It’s a really great opportunity,” she said.
“A lot of students at Ashburton College need their cars to get around and for future employment.”
Alford, 17, said it will also take the financial burden off her parents who won’t have to contribute to Libby achieving a full licence.
Congratulations? No, I cannot offer my congratulations to the new-look Guardian.
And why? Firstly, I am sick and tired of page after page of full page photos and/or advertisements.
I could understand this if we did not have enough news of real interest happening in the world today to fill the pages, or what is proposed to remedy the woes and worries that are out there.
I suppose the full page advertisements are cost effective, but the photos?
Then we are faced with headlines and important information in an ersatz language, which probably 95 per cent of us cannot understand here in New Zealand
and 99.9 per cent of people overseas would not know what we were talking about.
Yes, it is ersatz, because 90 per cent or probably even more of the words used have been made up to cope with modern language.
Of course, the original Maori language must not be lost, but that is not to say that we have got to learn something which is going to be of absolutely no use to us.
I think we are all aware of the Maori language, but enough is enough.
Saving the Maori language is not my job. Leave that to the academics, but if you are interested there is a Maori language programme on TV.
I have enough problems coping with Covid rules and regulations, and the other all too common
hassles that we are facing today.
I have been a supporter of the Guardian for over 64 years. I have been here in Ashburton, so I do not take criticising lightly.
Bruce LeightonKia ora, Mr Leighton
Thank you for your email. We welcome feedback.
Please allow me to clarify some of your points. Firstly, we seldom run full page editorial photos, apart from on the front page. That is done as a deliberate strategy to best communicate news-worthy messages and stories visually.
Those images, and story teasers and headlines, attract readers and it was one of the reasons why the Ashburton Guardian featured so prominently at the recent New Zealand media awards.
We seldom receive full-page advertisements, which is a shame. Revenue from full page adverts, as you may know, helps pay the bills to ensure the Ashburton Guardian may be around for another 143 years, having been established in 1879.
Your condemnation of the use of te reo Māori, which you called an ersatz (substitute) language, was disappointing but you’re entitled to that view. There is nothing substitutional about te reo.
Alongside New Zealand Sign Language, it’s an official language of our country, having been afforded that status in 1987.
English, of course, is New Zealand’s de facto official language by virtue of the numbers who speak it. You may not realise that te reo is fast becoming a must-
have in New Zealand business.
Many New Zealand agencies, including national and local government, and courts of law, also require their employees to have some degree of competence in te reo.
Importantly, a new generation of children were now coming through school being much more immersed in the language and culture than previous generations of New Zealanders. And that’s a good thing.
Personally, there aren’t really many negatives to learning a language, and te reo Māori is indeed part of our country. I thank you for your thoughts.
Ka kite anō (which is a friendly and informal way of saying goodbye).

Talk about a send-off, probably the greatest in history. The Queen’s funeral last night, and the pageantry, pomp, and circumstance in the preced ing 10 days since her death, was almost a step back in time and an incredible spectacle in a scale few of us have really seen before.
Flowing swans’ feathers adorn ing helmets, crowns containing priceless gems, swords polished to within an inch of their life, proclamations, gun salutes – and queues, oh those queues to see the Queen lying in state – it really has been something.
But while it was so clearly understandable to expect millions would want to pay their respects, either in person or watching from afar, perhaps it was also fair that many have asked just how much of this pageantry did we really need.
It just seems like every morning
and evening news programme, with our TV hosts still dressed in black, has involved staring at a coffin and watching the funeral build-up unfold. To be fair, some of the coverage of the Queen, her life, and achievements during and before her 70-year reign, has been compelling viewing.
And no one could argue that Britain does this kind of colourful military ceremony better than most, while the Brits’ love of Her Majesty has also never been in doubt. The mammoth crowds queuing to witness the passing of the second Elizabethan age have vividly confirmed that, as
has been the raw outpouring of emotion from young and old.
But given the hard-working Queen’s love for duty and devo tion, you could almost hear her suggesting to mourners that it’s time to get back to work.
ulation (about 4 billion) expected to have tuned in for the state fu neral – the first in Britain since Sir Winston Churchill’s in 1965.
It was a funeral that also sparked the biggest security operation ever staged in the UK,
Given the hard-working Queen’s love for duty and devotion, you could almost hear her suggesting to mourners that it’s time to get back to work.
And today that’ll start to hap pen after her state funeral that stopped a nation, and a good part of the world, where the numbers and statistics behind it were almost mind-blowing.
Two million mourners report edly descended on London, with more than half of the world’s pop
with more than 15,000 police on duty, with special forces and undercover soldiers poised to seal off London in the event of a major incident, while an air exclusion zone was also established.
Big screens to watch the funeral were put up across England, including in London’s Hyde Park,
while Edinburgh and Northern Ireland followed suit. Cinemas across the UK even opened their screens to show the funeral –bringing together local communi ties to commemorate.
If anything, the funeral at tendance and viewing, and the response in the UK to the 10 days of mourning, was the ultimate ba rometer of public sentiment and support for their beloved 96-yearold monarch and the Royal family.
And, yes, it is now time to move on and there will a different head on coins and notes, and different words for the English national anthem with King Charles III now the person in the hot seat. But perhaps it’s also right that, just for a moment today, we all have one final thought for Queen Elizabeth II who, perhaps in death as much as life, has confirmed her legacy, importance, and affection to the world.
Looking to be more sustainable in how he manages his farm, par ticularly in terms of nitrogen man agement, South Canterbury ara ble farmer Andrew Darling is one of the first to participate in a new Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) initiative.
As nitrogen fertiliser, his biggest spend, has at least doubled in price in the past two years, he wants the confidence to cut back and do more to utilise nutrients already in the soil.
The FAR initiative, called Grow ers Leading Change (GLC), pro vides a farmer-led framework for arable farmers to develop, test and introduce new ideas, technologies, and ways of working, in order to improve their farm, industry and community sustainability.
As part of this, Darling’s farm is the South Island’s first GLC Path finder, or demonstration farm, aimed at growers who are ready to embrace new ideas and technolo gies and identify sustainable path ways for the rest of the sector.
Andrew and his wife Amy lease Poplar Grove Farm from his par ents Warren and Joy Darling.
The rolling downs farm is fair ly typical for an arable farm south of Timaru in the type of crops it grows.
The biggest area is grown in feed wheat and barley. Sunflowers and oil seed rape are supplied to Rolle ston-based Pure Oil for processing into high-value cooking oil. Turf ryegrass for seed and fava beans are also grown.
Darling is questioning their highcost, high-input cropping pro gramme in favour of an approach that is less prescriptive, more re sponsive to the season and better utilises the soil nutrients and ben eficial insects already available on the farm.
The Darlings have already moved to adopt this approach, using 1ha grid soil sampling for the last sev en years and using this informa tion to apply nutrients at variable rates across paddocks. Dual sensor cameras installed last season on the roof of their tractor automat ically varied nitrogen application rates depending on a crop’s densi ty and greenness. The cameras are calibrated to the type of crop and growth stage. This, along with soil nitrogen testing reduced nitrogen applications by 15 per cent last year, compared to the blanket rate, with no impact on yields.
FAR senior researcher cereals Jo Drummond said nitrogen fertiliser is the biggest on-farm cost, so it is important for growers to make sure it is being used in the most efficient way possible.
“It’s great to see Andrew and Amy
using tools and technologies to re ally understand soil supply and crop uptake, which can provide opportunities to cut back on fer tiliser use without compromising on yield and profitability. Likewise, understanding the population dy namics of beneficial predator and parasitoid species can reduce the need for foliar insecticides, not just on your own farm, but across a re gion.”
Field day details: Tuesday September 27, 111 Timaru-Pareora Highway, from 10am to 12 noon.
Ollie Sutton traded high-tech tractors for high-octane V8s when he joined an Australi an Supercars pit crew for the Pukekohe round two weeks ago.
Sutton is in the second year of an apprenticeship in au tomotive engineering/agri culture equipment with New Holland dealership Norwood Christchurch and was keen ly anticipating his weekend in the pit lane with the high ly successful Red Bull Ampol Racing team which features New Zealand-born driver Shane Van Gisbergen.
Sutton was chosen for the unique experience as part of New Holland Agriculture’s sponsorship of the Red Bull Ampol Racing team for the 2022 Supercars Champion ship season, with New Holland apprentices, technicians and managers invited to nominate for a chance to join the team in the pits for the weekend.
“I was looking forward to seeing the types of tools and the different equipment they used to work on the cars, and I was keen to talk to the techni cians to see where they started and how they became part of a Supercars pit crew,” Sutton
said. Mark Simmons, branch manager of Ollie’s dealership, Norwood Christchurch, said everyone at the business “be lieved Sutton was the best ap prentice in New Zealand”.
“He started his journey with us after lockdown in 2020 and he has quickly become an in tegral part of our business.
“Just recently we had an issue with a customer’s trac tor and Ollie worked into the night to make sure we deliv ered the tractor back to the customer so he could get on with the job.”
Sutton credits his grandfa ther for his love of farm ma chinery and the agriculture industry.
“I wanted to work in the in dustry after working alongside my grandad on his farm as a kid, driving his tractors and helping him restore the old tractors he had,” Sutton said.
“Supercars was a once-in-alifetime experience, and I am very grateful I was able to get this awesome opportunity to work alongside such a great professional team,” he said.
“Everyone worked together as a team to meet their out comes in order to win the race (which they did).”
Peel Forest Estate’s Mark Tapley says attending a DINZ “Know Your Number” workshop has made things a lot clearer and was very helpful in getting his head around what is involved, and what it might mean for his operation when greenhouse gas (GHG) pricing is introduced in 2025.
The Canterbury workshop he attended was “run very well” by environmental consultant and deer farmer Danette McKeown, “and was very helpful,” he said.
Greenhouse gas accounting was complex, he said, adding he was also doing the NZ Farm Assurance Plus (NZFAP+) and a carbon-zero initiative with Silver Fern Farms using some intelli gent mapping software to work out his sequestration.
“Without knowing how much carbon you are sequestering, you cannot know your true number,” Tapley said.
Technology such as satellite mapping made it much easier to work out sequestration on indi vidual properties.
He didn’t like the idea that he was going to pay a levy for bio logical emissions.
“But, I believe we should be doing something,” he said. “However, the level at which New Zealand’s deer farmers are going to be taxed for methane needs to be fair, when methane levels across all agriculture as a country, are stable, if not declin ing.
“As farmers, we’re doing the very best we can to reduce any environmental footprint, with waterways, planting trees and so on, and we’re doing our part. But, going into the ETS would be
even worse because they treat methane as a long-term gas, the same as carbon dioxide, with no off-setting of emissions through on-farm sequestration.”
Deer Industry NZ was strongly encouraging deer farmers to at tend a Know Your Number work shop to find out how to calculate GHG emissions
Chief executive Innes Moffat said the threat posed by climate change was such that the ag in dustry, including deer farmers – along with all other sectors of society – needed to do their bit in reducing GHG emissions.
“Our customers expect us to reduce our carbon footprint, as
do our fellow New Zealanders. The Carbon Zero Act also has the support of the major political parties, so isn’t going to change substantially even with a change of government. So it’s important for all farmers to get their heads around what reducing or offset ting emissions might mean on our farms.”
DINZ and the HWEN partners were still awaiting a formal re sponse from the government to the HWEN farm level pricing system recommendations made in June.
Moffat said DINZ was holding Know Your Number workshops with the aim of having 440 deer
farms knowing their GHG emis sion numbers and having an initial plan for reducing their emissions by the end of the year as the sector’s commitment with the HWEN partnership.
He said once you knew how, “an emissions reduction plan did not need to be very detailed, because there were no magic bullets for reducing emissions”.
Participants have commented their understanding of the issues was much clearer, and that it had given them a “straight-up under standing of the ETS and HWEN” and what it meant for their farm, McKeown said.
She also noted that “while
some farmers don’t necessarily agree with or like the greenhouse accounting proposals the feed back following the workshops showed attending was definitely worthwhile”.
She had also recently noticed more people coming through now who might not usually at tend workshops or use comput ers but realised they “just need ed to know their number”.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): A good meal, interesting conversation, a peaceful walk... such simple pleasures will be savoured when you stick to the original plan. Sidenote: What if you adopted a zero tolerance policy for flaky people?
TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Care, love, tenderness, ambition, obsession... all are forms of attention that manifest in action. Where there is no evidence of attention, there is no evidence of love.
GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You’ll spend time with people who make you want to work with them. Good people will learn who you are and will work with your strengths to create something unique with you.
CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): Before things get interesting (and they will), cherish eventless times. There’s beauty in an uninterrupted routine and loveliness in the unfolding of a predictable day.
LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): It’s easy to think of yourself as the wave -- riding ups and downs, feeling at times like the crest and then like the trough. But those are just states. You are not the wave. You are the water.
VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Who cares the most about the situation? It’s the one who has to live with it day to day; not the temporary agent. You’ll make sure the right people get their say -the ones affected.
LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You’ll have a communication breakthrough. It’s satisfying because of the times before when you struggled to chase down the point and missed. Now you know what you’re trying to say, and you say it well.
SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): There’s a difference between teamwork and the operations of a dictatorship. Tune into the subtle ways people try to control one another. Avoid anyone focused on making others do their bidding.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): You will be often making plans, remembering something or observing a reality that is representational of another moment. Each time that you bring yourself fully to “now” is an enrichment.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Reality and imagination will blend for you. You will live what you imagine, and you will imagine based on what you live. Your creativity is shaping your experience, and others want to be a part of it.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You crave adventure, but your idea of it is not the same as another person’s. So before you share in the quest, get clear on your preferences. The best mark to hit will feel safe, but not too comfortable.
PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): You bring uniqueness to relationships; you make sure of it. A winning strategy for creating memories: Make big moments small, and small moments big.

Netball New Zealand has confirmed the Taini Jamison Trophy between the Silver Ferns and Jamaica will go ahead, with the visitors currently en route to Auckland.
The Jamaican team’s passport is sues have been resolved, with the remainder of the group expected to arrive today.
The three-test series has lost a game due to the paperwork disrup tions, with two mid-week games to be played.
The first test is on Wednesday night on the North Shore, and the second at Pulman Arena in South Auckland on Thursday night.
Jamaica’s trip was delayed after complications with their passports left NNZ with the unfortunate deci sion of cancelling the Hamilton leg of the series and moving all games to Auckland.
President of Netball Jamaica Tricia Robinson said they were extremely
pleased to be on their way to New Zealand for the revised series.
“We are very much looking for ward to finally arriving in New Zea land and getting on court for what we know will be a great series.”
Netball NZ chief commercial of ficer David Cooper said after a num ber of setbacks they were looking forward to seeing the teams meet on court.
“Seeing these two great teams on court playing for the Taini Jamison Trophy has been the goal all along, and we’re excited that this prospect is a step closer,” he said.
“I’d like to thank the team behind the scenes who have been working around the clock to ensure this se ries has the best chance possible to go ahead.
“But I’d also like to recognise our netball fans who have been affected by the flow-on effects of reschedul ing matches.”
Wednesday September 21 - 7.30pm at Eventfinda Stadium in Auckland
Thursday September 22 - 7.00pm at Pulman Arena in Auckland

They went from Peak to Pub and every where in between.
A full field of accomplished and aspir ing multisport athletes, as well as many people just there for the enjoyment of it all, tackled the annual Peak to Pub on Sat urday in Methven.
The popular event across the South Is land and New Zealand multisport canvas was again a sold-out fixture with a maxi mum number of entries, as the continued bounce back from Covid-19 interrupted years continues.
The three-pronged race sees compet itors ski 2km from high on the slopes of Mt Hutt to the transition area, where they then jump on the mountain bike and de scend the 18km down the main access road to the bottom of the mountain.
From there it’s a 12km run from the bot tom of the access road to the finish line outside the Blue Pub.
More than 450 competitors lined up to compete across the categories this year, with entrants in a variety of men’s and women’s races as well as the teams events.
Race veteran and former winner Flavio Vianna headed home the 165 men who took to the start line to win the overall men’s title. He completed the course in a slick one hour and 15.21 seconds ahead of Steve Melton who was second and Tom O’Neill in third.
Annabelle Bramwell was the first fe male past the post in a time of one hour and 29.10 minutes, three minutes clear of Priscilla Thompson who finished second and five minutes clear of Julia Tully who claimed third.
Competitors make the 100m dash from the start line to the beginning of the ski leg in the an nual Peak to Pub on Saturday.
The male teams event was won by team 3rd Last Year, Jared Armstrong (ski), Jason Thompson (bike) and Jarrod Mclauch lan (run). The Funky Frogs trio of Emma Saxon (ski), Aimee Blackmore (bike) and
Jess Sheldon (run) took out the women’s teams event.
Fire At Will’s Catie Mason (ski), Xander Marsh (bike) and Will Tidswell (run) were victorious in the mixed category.
In contention for a long way, but not quite there at the business end.
That’s the summation of the Ashburton indoor bowls representative side’s bid to be crowned the best side in the country in Hamilton on the weekend, as they fin ished third at the Welch Trophy.
The pinnacle of representative bowls in New Zealand, the Welch Trophy pits the six best regions in the land against each other, in an intense weekend of bowls.
Ashburton went forth looking for their first success in the event, and heading into the penultimate round on Saturday night, they were right in the hunt.
After consistent play throughout the first three rounds of the competition which began on Friday night, they sat just off the competition leaders, Waikato, and looked to be on song to really push, but a bad round of play on Saturday night ef fectively wiped their chances of success.
They managed to fight hard on Sunday morning to maintain their spot in the top three, but ultimately had to settle for third, as Waikato cleared away from the pack on their home floor to claim success with Hutt Valley in second place.
Ashburton’s Simon Thomas was the fifth best player in the hall for the week end with nine wins and two draws from his 15 games across the weekend, while Grant Wilson and Murray Bassett also turned in good shifts.
Wilson had seven wins and two draws, while Bassett claimed eight wins, includ ing four of his five singles matches for the weekend.
All roads appear to lead to Ash burton’s Magic Monday this year, offering the chance of significant boost to the most traditional of lead-up races to the New Zealand Trotting Cup.
The annual Ashburton Fly ing Stakes has long been held as the ultimate lead-up to the great race on the second Tuesday in November at Addington, but in recent years it has struggled with dwindling numbers and failing to reach the heights of the halcyon days in the 90s.
Only twice in the past 10 years has the race seen more than 10 starters, and things even slipped to a dramatic all-time low in 2016 when just six turned to face the starter.
That’s in large been due to de clining open class pacing ranks in New Zealand, but also an unwill ingness from some trainers and connections to tackle a brutal 2400m journey on New Zealand’s fastest track just a fortnight out from the biggest dance of them all.
But this year, the need to be
there might outdo the desire to not be.
For once we’ve got a deep lineup of horses shooting for a start in the Cup. And while some will fall to the wayside along the way and there’s still many a challenge to be faced before we get to Magic Monday, there’s certainly reason for the Ashburton Trotting Club to be optimistic.
Forty horses have been nomi nated for this year’s Cup. Natural attrition will likely see about a dozen of those drop off by the time the Flying Stakes rolls around on Labour Weekend in October.
And while for some a start in the Cup will be assured by that point – for a large number, it’ll still be touch and go, forcing the hand of some trainers to try and chase a potential boost in the rankings to earn a place in the fi nal 15 to head to the start in the big one.
History suggests that Rolle ston’s All Stars stable will be there in force.
They’ve won seven of the last eight editions of the Flying Stakes, and could well turn up this year with Self Assured, Spankem, Aku ta and recent returnee, South
Coast Arden, who they are over seeing the training of once again.
Add to that the likes of up-andcoming pacer Krug, dour stayer Laver, Southland star Pembrook Playboy and potentially an Aus tralian flavour with Lochinvar Art and Majestic Cruiser, and there’s a strong nucleus for a powerful field.
That doesn’t factor in the pow er of new strike-rate stable Stone wall Stud, who have BD Joe, Alta Wiseguy and potentially even one of New Zealand’s best mares in Allamericanlover in their arse nal, as well as the usual visitors from the far north with Copy That, Kango and even a horse like Hot And Treacherous a potential starter.
Then there’s the plethora of cusp horses who are yet to prove their true worth but will need to fight for spots. So, things look bright, and a full field might not even be out of the realms of pos sibility if everything falls into place.
The Cup took another step for ward on the weekend with the running of the historic Hannon Memorial at Oamaru.
Class three-year-old, and one of the most exciting pacers in the country, Akuta was victorious in the event, sitting parked for the last lap and just getting the better
of Alta Wiseguy in the run to the line.
His win was one part of a red-letter day for champion horseman Mark Purdon, who claimed four driving wins on the programme and co-trained three of them. He won with Cyrus and Queen Of Diamonds as well as Akuta and also jumped in the sulky to win on smart trotter, I Dream Of Jeannie for trainer, Sam Smolenski.
The run home was never going to be easy, but now it’s become fraught with danger for Mid Can terbury.
A shock 22-34 defeat at home to King Country on the Ashbur ton Showgrounds has left the Hammers in a perilous position with three weeks of normal sea son remaining in the Heartland Championship.
And now the fight for survival begins.
With a trip to Levin this week to take on Horowhenua-Kapiti, Mid Canterbury will need maximum points next to their name with games against the competition’s two leading sides, South Canter bury and Whanganui, over the final two weeks before the playoff stage.
It’s not inconceivable by any means; they’re still in the hunt and sit seventh, but unless points come this week and perhaps a surprise victory over the final two rounds, it’s going to be a tight race to get the chance to compete for silverware.
Saturday’s match at home in front of their supporters provid ed the green and golds an op portunity to really assert their standing in the competition after a mix-and-match first few weeks, including an impressive golden point win against North Otago the week prior.
But it was King Country who came to play, and for much of the first half, Mid Canterbury were innocent bystanders.
The visitors scored 16 unan swered points in the first 30 min utes of the match before Tom Reekie put the ball between the uprights to get the home side on the board.
A brilliant try to Isireli Masiwini seven minutes later made it look as though the tide was turning in favour of Mid Canterbury, but King Country kept coming, and added another eight points of their own to take their lead up to 24-8 at the break.
Halftime was a little longer coming than usual with a signif icant stoppage to the game fol lowing an injury to King Country lock Josh Balme.
Balme was taken to hospital following the incident and lat er cleared of any serious injury, King Country reported after the match.
While they looked good with ball in hand and created oppor tunities through broken play, Mid Canterbury were guilty of not se curing the ball at the breakdown, and King Country put forth a huge presence over the top of the
ball, disrupting the flow of play and turning the ball back over on a number of occasions.
Mid Canterbury’s return from the shed seemed to have spurred them on early in the second half, and just seconds after getting onto the paddock, Manasa Samo made his presence known as he scored next to the posts to narrow the margin.
King Country again countered with a penalty of their own, but Mid Canterbury kept coming at them, and Tyler Blackburn made the most of a small gap down the blindside from a ruck and bur rowed over to bring the game to within five points with 20 min utes to play.
But that was Mid Canterbury’s lot.
King Country scored again to extend the margin past a bo nus point for their hosts, and
try as the home side might, they couldn’t penetrate the defen sive line again as King Country claimed the match.
Kaydis Hona was again a shin ing light for Mid Canterbury on the side of the scrum.
The openside flanker has prov en to be one of the finds of the season for Mid Canterbury, while Isireli Masiwini was again a beast with the ball in hand in the mid field and made plenty of metres – constantly getting over the ad vantage line.
It’s the first match this sea son that Mid Canterbury haven’t walked away from with points on the board, and just how crucial that might be by the end of pool play remains to be seen.
But with two wins from five games and three losses that argu ably shouldn’t have been losses it’s been tough.
And it’s only going to get tough er from here on in for coach John Sherratt and his side.
afternoon rounds of play.
Canterbury might have walked off the greens the dominant performers of their annual clash against Aorangi on the weekend, but there were still plenty of encouraging signs for their southern counterparts from a big day of golf.
The annual fixture between the two sides took place on Sunday at the Ashburton Golf Club under great conditions with the strong Canterbury outfit enjoying an unbeaten day with wins in the Men’s, Women’s and Juniors divisions as well as a half in the tightly contested Masters Men’s event which went right down the wire.
The first representative fixture of the latter half of the year, and a solid hit-out ahead of some big inter provincial fixtures ahead, proved the perfect avenue for players to get out and play competitive golf.
Of the 28 players representing the Aorangi region in the event, 13 were Mid Canterbury locals.
The red and blacks were dominant right across the men’s and women’s battles, but in the Masters it was an intriguing watch through both the morning and
Seven of the eight players in that particular side were Mid Cantabrians with Travis Cook, Dave Cornelius and Nigel Heney all grabbing outright wins in the morning, while both Jeff Hewitt and John Smitheram recorded halves.
That left the two sides locked at 4-all after the first round and while the head-to-head match ups changed after lunch, the results didn’t.
Smitheram, Cook, Hewitt and Heney all claimed good wins for the Aorangi side, with the two teams locked at 8-all by the end of play.
In the Senior Men’s action, Canterbury came out of the blocks firing picking up seven of the eight morning matches to put themselves in a commanding position.
Things improved in the afternoon for Aorangi with three wins – including one for local player, Josh Smith who claimed a 2-up victory over his rival, but Canterbury were comfortably home with a 12-4 margin.
The Aorangi women’s side had a better morning with wins from Catherine Knight, Sharon Bradford and Angela Gerken to be right in the hunt heading to the afternoon round.
But a solitary win and two halves in the afternoon weren’t
enough to get them home, as Canterbury strode to a 11-5 victory in the overall tie.
The junior event, for Under 19 players was an all-South Canterbury affair for Aorangi but they were no match for the Cantabs, who won 7-1 in the four-person team event.
With the first fixture of the season out of the way, the women’s sides will now look towards the Golf New Zealand Women’s Interprovincial in Bay Of Plenty in early December
The men have the South Island Interprovincial in Hororata in late October, the Men’s Masters
South Island Interprovincial in Motueka and the New Zealand Men’s Interprovincial in Bay Of Plenty in December to look forward to.
The age group teams will also head toward the Junior Interprovincial in Cambridge in early October.
Five local names feature in this year’s Junior Crusaders squad for the 2022 campaign. 51 of the Crusader regions top high school prospects were selected for the squad last week. They’ll attend a Junior Crusaders camp in October. From Mid Canterbury, Jackson Ross, Zach Parkin, Ned Milne, Shaun Kempton and Jack Busch-Ward were all included in the squad. There’s a Mid Canterbury connection to the selection panel of the squad as well with Crusaders Head of Talent ID being Mid Cantabrian, Guy Lemon.
Basketball Mid Canterbury’s Women’s Grade competition gets under way tonight for the new season. Six teams will take to the courts for three games to kickstart the season beginning at 6pm, with Mount Hutt College v FKW before Basket Brawlers and Oldies But Goodies begin at 6.15pm. The final game of the night is at 7.15 with Young Guns taking on Bricklayers.
The quartet were one of two teams to win all four of their games on the green with the composite team of Len Luke, Raylene Heads, Faye McKnight and Pat McElwain also taking four-from-four. That resulted in a countback
