That was the reaction from organiser Carol Johns (pictured centre) to the Ashburton Market Day. Johns, flanked by Stacey Broadbent (left) and Sheena Clark, were the brains behind the popular return of the community market event in which thousands crammed on to East Steet to enjoy goodies from more than 100 stalls.

Anzco denies breaching rules

Daryl Holden

Anzco Foods deny their massive Wakanui feedlot has breached biosecurity rules, leaving it and nearby farms having to cull live stock to curb an infectious cattle disease.

“At no time has Five Star Beef breached the act or operated out side MPI’s (Ministry of Primary Industries) instructions,’’ Anzco Foods’ general manager systems, supply and sustainability, Grant Bunting, said in a written state ment.

But Anzco‘s Five Star Beef feedlot, where the deadly bacterial disease mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis) was first detected in 2018, must now depopu late all animals start ing next month to stop it spreading fur ther.

At its operational peak, the feedlot could grow or fatten up to 12,000 cattle until they reached slaugh ter weight. Now a big number of those ani mals, if not all of them, faced being culled. Another eight nearby cattle farms – includ ing three properties owned by Anzco –would also undergo a mass animal slaugh ter by mid-January 2023, with a further six farms to undergo in creased testing.

The news has dev astated everyone involved and left farmers angry and nervous, with MPI’s M. bovis programme

MID CANTY’S BOVIS FEARS

What: The Five Star Beef feedlot, owned by Anzco Foods, must undergo a massive cull of its animals to stop the spread of mycoplasma bovis cattle disease. It farms about 12,000 cattle, with culling to begin in midOctober.

Other farms impacted: Eight nearby farms in a high-risk area would also be depopulated, with a further six in an at-risk area to undergo increased testing.

What’s Ministry of Primary Industries saying: That the transmission route from the feed outlet to other farms was “unclear”.

director Simon Andrew admit ting how the disease was trans mitted “remains unclear’’.

All fingers are pointed at An zco Foods’ feedlot operation, but Bunting said they have been working “closely’’ with MPI since M. bovis was found at its Five Star Beef site four years ago.

He also said the feedlot had implemented all of MPI’s biose curity requirements, followed its advice and that the Five Star site was a “complex operation’’ but all jobs would be retained.

“Five Star Beef will go through the same depopulation process as all other farms,’’ he said.

“It will be empty of cattle by the end of the year when it will un dergo a 60-day standdown and a cleaning and disinfecting pro cess. After this, the operation will start repopulating again.’’ Bunting’s response did not wash with an industry insid er, who the Guardian agreed not to name because the whistleblower feared a profes sional and person al backlash if his identity became public.

“No quaran tine or mitigation measures were taken on the feedlot, or its other farms, to prevent the spread of the dis

“(That) included (following) legislation, requiring double fencing on all boundaries of its farms that contained infect ed sick cows bordering grazing blocks owned by other farmers.

“I have a photo of one such ex ample whereby sick Five Star ani mals were separated from anoth er farm’s grazing block, with (just) a two-strand hotwire fence!’’

He also claimed that on Thurs day last week a transport truck broke biosecurity rules by leav ing the feedlot “covered in efflu

ent and leaking effluent all over the road’’.

He said that was a clear breach because no biological material should leave M. bovis notified properties, “including effluent’’.

But Anzco Foods disputed that view, saying the removal of ma nure from their operation had been a permitted activity and it had complied with all regulatory and statutory requirements, in cluding transport and roading.

“Based on all advice to-date, manure is not considered to be a vector for mycoplasma bo vis,’’ Bunting said about what is a complicated bacterial disease, which had plagued the dairy in dustry since it was discovered in New Zealand in 2017.

The bacteria effects cows but has no impact on human health. It can also get into the udder and cows can pass it on to calves through their milk.

In calves, it can cause pneu monia and is difficult to treat, while in fully-grown animals it can cause mastitis and arthritis.

MPI believed the disease may have first arrived in New Zealand in late 2015 or 2016 before being officially detected.

The whistleblower hoped that by coming forward it would help “ignite a fire under MPI, Anzco and ultimately the Government ministers involved’’ because he thought their control and man agement of the situation in Mid Canterbury left a lot to be desired.

“… the farmers of this district need answers particularly why and how they became infected,’’ he said.

Preece dismisses resignation calls

College principal responds to latest bullying accusations

Ashburton College principal Ross Preece feels no pressure to resign after further stinging national media bullying claims against his school.

The allegations, which includ ed a suggestion that a student attempted suicide because she had been bullied, has again left Ashburton’s only high school in damage control.

It was only weeks ago that the college was in the national bul lying spotlight after revelations by a former 15-year-old female student, who felt so threatened that she had to enrol at an other school.

The latest claims were made in an explosive account on tel evision and via an online story, which included cellphone video footage of two boys fighting in the school toilets and airing of part of a secretly recorded in terview between Preece and a mother of an alleged bullied stu dent.

The stor y contained sugges tions from unnamed parents that Preece needed to be ac countable for what they felt was ongoing bullying mismanage ment and that he should resign.

Preece, who pointed out that the boys’ fight was dealt with six weeks ago, said calls to resign were “sadly part of the job’’ for any principal.

He was concerned about pos sible industry knock-on effects such allegations could have in attracting future principals na tionally.

“What does scare me is that the number of people who as pire to be principals is dropping.

“That’s a real issue. If you look at disinformation type of stuff getting out there, principal as pirants might be looking at that and be thinking, ‘no, thanks. I’ll just stay as a DP (deputy princi pal)’.

“That is a real worry.’’

Preece said he would always listen to and seek the opinions of those he respected when it came to evaluating his own per formance.

“I’ve had a number of messag es from staff today, saying you are doing a really good job,’’ he said.

“And I’ve had about 10 mes sages from the ministry (of ed ucation) and another colleague, saying, ‘hey listen. It’s just un fortunate. It’s your (school’s) n (to attract negative national

the latest bullying drama claims.

He said the “vast majority’’ of students and families knew Ashburton College was a ‘’great school’’ but that he was unable to give his side to bullying alle gations because of privacy is sues involving all parties.

We regret that some parents have a negative view of the col lege, but there are thousands of college students who have had a successful experience. Bullying is part of life.

“Fourteen and 15-year-olds, particularly when you throw in social media, are not good at moderating their own behav iour.

“They learn with their own ex perience. It’s just a huge frustra tion.’’

Unfortunately, bullying claims attracting national attention are not new for the college.

Last year, there was an in

teacher of all allegations, which stretched back at least three years.

In 2018, there was a violent group attack on a boy, while in 2017 a young girl had her head stomped into the ground in a vicious attack captured on cam era.

In 2015, three students were also suspended after putting a cloth bag over a boy’s head and telling him, “this is just like Isis”, the terrorist militant group in the Middle East.

As the fallout continued from the latest accusations, Preece stressed that he would always remain focused on protecting the school and its students, and that the college’s bullying mes sages never changed.

Contractors issued a ‘please explain’

the ongoing issues with insufficient funding across New Zealand to maintain the network.

Current Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown has told the roading contractors they must do better.

Brown, chief executive Hamish Riach, and infrastructure services group manager Neil McCann met with roading contractor HEB this week to discuss the roading network maintenance.

Brown said he informed HEB’s regional infrastructure executive general manager, David Simpson, how “unhappy we are with the work they have been doing on their maintenance over the last year”.

“And ‘what are they going to do about it’.”

Riach said the discussion around what HEB can do better started with the acknowledgment of back-to-back wet winters and

“Acknowledging those constraints, how do we make our scarce resources go a bit further, or how can we do better in the context of the overarching concerns about the roading network,” Riach said.

Brown said HEB is now developing a model for improvement, “on how they think they can do things differently and improve on the maintenance of our roading network”.

HEB will present its plan to the new council in November.

Brown also noted that Local Government NZ (LGNZ) is calling for an independent review of transport funding within the next 12 months.

Brown said the productive meeting with HEB and the request for a funding review, shows the council is coming at the roading problems from all angles “so we try and do better”.

Riach said that in the middle of

winter, when the ground is wet, “there is almost no technology that can fix a pot hole beyond a couple of days”.

“The trick is to do a really good job of the rehab work when the weather is great so the water doesn’t get in.”

McCann said the council is

sidised road funding.

“This is going to be a summer that we want to see delivery and an improvement of the assets.

“A lot of money is going towards it and a lot of work has gone into setting up and programming the works so we, with HEB, are looking forward to a successful road-

A lot of money is going towards it and a lot or work has gone into setting up and programming the works so we, with HEB, are looking forward to a successful roading programme

about to get stuck into the maintenance programme.

“We have a big programme this coming summer, it’s bigger than last year.”

The entire capital works roading programme was delivered last year and there is more on the books this year, with the council adding $1.7m in unsub-

ing programme.”

Pothole spotting

Councillor Stuart Wilson says the solution for the pothole problems, especially over the wetter winter months, is tackling them sooner rather than later.

“If we can encouraging people to report potholes when they are

small. It’s so much quicker and easier [to fix] and to me, they last a lot longer.

“It’s these gigantic big holes. They are the ones that continually [cause problems].”

Utilising the Snap, Send, Solve app to identify a pothole as soon as it develops will avoid the larger, harder-to-fix potholes from emerging and recurring, he said.

Current Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown agreed.

“Every person has a piece of road outside their property. They need to take, not ownership of it, but stewardship of it and if it’s not right Snap, Send. Solve it in.

“If they all did that we would be on to it,” Brown said.

Trip to Oamaru in memory of his brother

Allan Andrews is making a nostalgic trip back to his old school in Oamaru and is taking 70 passengers with him.

Allan, who has an eight hectare lifestyle block on Cochrane’s Road, is making the trip in memory of his brother, Lindsay, who died from leukaemia, and to raise money for Cancer Society, Ashburton.

He’s hired two Ritchie’s buses and he, and his wife, Jeanette, will drive to the Hall of Memories at Waitaki Boys High and other North Otago hotspots this morning.

Allan himself suffered from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma just over 40 years ago and was given a 5 per cent chance of recovery while Jeannette had bowel cancer with two-thirds of her liver removed 12 years ago.

They’re survivors and intend to give something back to other sufferers and the Cancer Society.

From fares charged, Allan and Jeannette want to hand over $2000 to the Ashburton branch.

“I had chemotherapy on and off for eight months during 1988,” he said. “I had a strong heart and the oncologist told me the medication would either kill or cure me.

After three days he saw a glimmer of hope and I started improving from then on.”

The Andrews farmed at Glenavy, south of Timaru, and, during Allan’s recovery, Jeannette took over the property and lambed 1500 ewes. But health reasons saw them move to Geraldine in 2001 and then to their Ashburton lifestyle block seven years ago.

His story is told in his book, Allan Andrews 70 Years On. Proceeds from the sale were given to

the Cancer Society.

Now Allan is making the trip for two reasons. He wants the passengers, mostly cancer sufferers and Friendship Club members, to enjoy a day’s outing, but the focus for him is to visit the Hall of Memories.

“It’s going to be very moving for me to return. We’ll be piped to the venue by a senior student. There

the deputy principal will give an organ interlude and I’ll share my memories with the passengers,” he said.

“It’s going to give me a lot of personal satisfaction. It will be very nostalgic.”

The day out includes the Steampunk HQ in Oamaru, an ancient flour mill at Ngapara and a visit to Neil and Dot Smith’s cas-

tle on State Highway 1.

Allan and Jeannette both drive for Ritchie’s, so the buses were available on discounted rates. During the journey he’ll use his microphone to tell anecdotes about South Canterbury and North Otago.

“It’ll be an information trip as well. I get quite colourful on the microphone,” he promised.

Where our candidates stand

There are 20 candidates vying for the 10 seats at the Ashburton District Council. To help provide voters with a much broader view of the candidates than the 150-word blurb in the election booklet allows, they were each sent 10 questions covering key issues to further help frame candidates’ views and positions.

The Ashburton Ward was featured in Saturday’s Guardian, so today we cover the mayoralty, and the Eastern and Western Ward candidates.

1: Roading is the biggest concern in the districthow do you propose to solve it?

More money put into roading will assist. I have lobbied central government ministers for the funding model to be reviewed as the present funding model isn’t working well.

2: What do you see as the big issues in the district?

The retenon of the Three Waters in local control and localism in general – ensuring we have a say for our community.

3: How will you seek to solve them?

Keep lobbying central government and show them their proposed model of centralisaon is not workable.

4: What three projects do you think council should focus on?

Roads, Three Waters and gaining equitable funding for the second urban Ashburton bridge.

5: What area, other than roads, can the council do beer?

Deliver projects in a melier manner and hold contractors to account for the work they do for us.

6: Should council be spending on climate change iniaves?

Council takes climate change into account when replacing infrastructure and should work to reduce its own carbon footprint.

7: How do you propose to improve the Ashburton District as a desnaon to aract new residents and tourists?

Our town centre upgrades and connuous improvement to our infrastructure makes Ashburton very aracve to live in; increase tourism through good promoon.

8: What is your view on co-governance and the Crown meeng its obligaons under Te Tiri? Council, like all people and organisaons, must meet its obligaons under Te Tiri and work in partnership with iwi.

9: How do you plan to increase community engagement in local governance?

By keeping the community informed with high quality, factually honest informaon through our mul-media approach we use currently.

1:

EASTERN WARD Lynette Lovett

EASTERN WARD Keith Townshend

I would like to see old character buildings retained. The facade would be old with new interior. Colourful roadside murals and promoon of the foothills, bush and mountain scenery.

6: Should council be spending on climate change iniaves?

No. Our farmers do an amazing job yet they get no carbon credits. Fully agree on sustainability.

Roading is the biggest concern in the district- how do you propose to solve it?

Local Government is calling for a review of Waka Kotahi as the funding of roading maintenance is inadequate. It is not fit for purpose.

2: What do you see as the big issues in the district?

Three Waters, funding for the new bridge, Resource Management Act.

3: How will you seek to solve them?

Keep advocang to government for funding, answer quesons, and involve us in decision making.

4: What three projects do you think council should focus on?

Funding for the new local bridge, we need it now. Finish the new library administraon building on budget. Methven and surrounding districts, water upgrades.

5: What area, other than roads, can the council do beer?

Promong the good stories and achievements of our district.

6: Should council be spending on climate change iniaves?

We have a climate change policy intertwined into every facet of council, eg work programmes and policies and a Civil Defence staff member working on community plans.

7: How do you propose to improve the Ashburton District as a desnaon to aract new residents and tourists?

Keep working with our economic development team to encourage new businesses to set up here. Council is an enabler and to get businesses to promote themselves and tell their stories.

8: What is your view on co-governance and the Crown meeng its obligaons under Te Tiri?

One person one vote, that is our democrac way. Council consults now with Iwi on all projects undertaken, we work as a partnership and staff hold regular meengs.

9: How do you plan to increase community engagement in local governance?

In the last several years we have made major inroads with upgrading the website, YouTube, Facebook, and snap send solve. We now live stream meengs and consultaons can be done online or in person.

1: Roading is the biggest concern in the district – how do you propose to solve it?

By reducing consultancy fees if possible, allowing more funds to aend to the real work.

2: What do you see as the big issues in the district?

Three Waters is an aempt at the biggest the in NZ history to steal local assets. Government will be aer irrigaon water next. We must not let this happen.

3: How will you seek to solve them?

I propose to withdraw from LGNZ (align with Timaru and others).

Total non-co-operaon with Government. I will give my all to fight this.

4: What three projects do you think council should focus on?

Bridge. Four lane highway to Christchurch. Moving the rail shunng yard.

5: What area, other than roads, can the council do beer?

7: How do you propose to improve the Ashburton District as a destinaon to aract new residents and tourists?

Suggest spruce up the West Street corridor. That’s what travellers will remember. Agriculture is the lifeblood of the district creang employment.

8: What is your view on cogovernance and the Crown meeng its obligaons under Te Tiri?

Against. I would queson the interpretaon. This would be the first step to end democracy in our district. Appointed outsiders would not be welcome.

9: How do you plan to increase community engagement in local governance?

We must honour those who have gone before us. This is an amazing district with beauty and character. We need to be posive and thankful for what we have here.

Posive atudes bring engagement.

EASTERN WARD Richard Wilson

Protect our key infrastructure. Connue improvements of our district’s recreaonal facilies.

5: What area, other than roads, can the council do beer?

Focus on core assets.

6: Should council be spending on climate change iniaves?

EASTERN WARD

Rob Mackle

1: Roading is the biggest concern in the district – how do you propose to solve it?

Make sure that all parts of the roading supply chain are held to account. Repairs are completed on me and to a high standard. We connue to invest in our roading network as this is the lifeblood of our district.

2: What do you see as the big issues in the district?

Government and outside influences sfling our district’s growth and our environment’s improvements.

3: How will you seek to solve them?

Advocate for Ashburton District whenever possible.

4: What three projects do you think council should focus on?

Keeping Ashburton District as a good place to live and do business, in so creang good employment.

The council should ensure it supports our communies to adapt to climate change, any money spent has to come from somewhere. Higher rates! The climate change industry is big enough without council financing it as well.

7: How do you propose to improve the Ashburton District as a desnaon to aract new residents and tourists?

A good place to conduct business leads to good jobs and connue to improve all the district’s recreaonal facilies.

8: What is your view on cogovernance and the Crown meeng its obligaons under Te Tiri?

I believe in one equal vote per person.

9: How do you plan to increase community engagement in local governance?

I believe in democracy. Allowing people to have a say and listening is a councillor’s job.

Drinking water has been an issue for the foothills and Methven areas – this should improve with our new

WESTERN WARD Lynda Topp

1: Roading is the biggest concern in the district – how do you propose to solve it?

Roading has been underfunded for years. Work on the problem has been a quick fix. We need to do the job properly and spend our budget wisely. Contractors must be accountable. Council is prepared to spend $3m on the architectural landscape of Baring Square, but has not spent enough on the district wide problem of roading.

2: What do you see as the big issues in the district?

Drinking water, infrastructure upgrades, communicaon

3: How will you seek to solve them?

The first two are funding issues and the commitment to long-term fixes. The council also needs to be more transparent and involve the community much more.

4: What three projects do you think council should focus on?

Drinking water, roading, infrastructure.

5: What area, other than roads, can the council do beer?

Improve drinking water, be more transparent and spend their budget on necessies not nicees.

6: Should council be spending on climate change iniaves?

Yes, should be included in the long-term plan, I believe one of our climate-based issues will be more flooding.

membrane treatment plants.

6: Should council be spending on climate change iniaves?

Yes, by incorporang our climate change policy into the decisions on roading, stormwater etc to ensure infrastructure can handle regular, severe weather events.

7: How do you propose to improve the Ashburton District as a desnaon to aract new residents and tourists? This sounds simple but I have been asking for a district wide events calendar and a ‘what’s on’ sign coming into the district. Also need co-ordinaon of more events for the district.

8: What is your view on co-governance and the Crown meeng its obligaons under Te Tiri? Co-governance is appropriate where praccal. The council should be meeng obligaons under Te Tiri.

9: How do you plan to increase community engagement in local governance?

I’ve seen more uptake on consultaon when we have a specific purpose consultaon day – keen to see us do this more.

Council and ECan must work together more closely to reduce this problem especially in the farming areas and to minimise the threat to urban areas.

7: How do you propose to improve the Ashburton District as a desnaon to aract new residents and tourists?

To improve and aract tourists to our district we must define where those areas are. Desnaons that offer acvies such as skiing, biking, hiking, hunng and fishing, are mostly where people want to visit. These areas should be funded accordingly. Before we try to aract new residents, we must improve our infrastructure and have fair and reasonable rates.

8: What is your view on co-governance and the Crown meeng its obligaons under Te Tiri?

Co-governance is described as partnerships not ownership, the Three Waters plan by the Government is a prime example of this. Not a fan of Three Waters. The crown and all councils are all obligated under the Te Reo Treaty principles of partnership, parcipaon and protecon to address inequies.

9: How do you plan to increase community engagement in local governance?

Talk to the locals, finding out what people want is a crucial part of being a councillor, we are there to represent ratepayers and the community, not be guided by our own personal agendas.

how successful events like this could be.

“I hope the (Ashburton District) council can see what can be done,” Johns said.

Johns would like to see the street market remain as it is something special to Ashburton.

“It’s so much better here on the street than in the domain,” said Johns.

Game, set and match – Federer

Perhaps it was a sign in the crowd that summed it up best.

“On the eighth day, God creat ed Roger Federer,’’ it read, a lady bursting with pride as she waved it from her spot in the stands in a sold out 17,500 London O2 Arena. A special flag on a special night that signalled the end of an era and in an emotional way that world sport has probably never experienced before.

Federer, now 41 but looking as lithe and impeccably presented as he always has – with not a hair out of place – bid adieu to end his superlative 24-year profes sional career that included 20 Grand Slam titles and unofficial recognition as the game’s premier statesman.

That full stop on his pro career came with a loss in a gripping doubles clash playing alongside

Daryl Holden

his long-time rival but close friend Rafael Nadal for Team Europe against Team World’s Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock of Team in the Laver Cup.

For the record, Tiafoe and Sock saved a match point before winning 11-9 in a third set super tiebreaker. But no-one really cared about that, least of all the Fed Express, his family, friends and supporters, who had turned out to say goodbye and thank you to a player who’s given tennis and the world sport so much for so long.

The occasion, after all, was all

about the Federer farewell and what a farewell it was because af ter the final point in the doubles clash, the emotion hit. Boy, did it hit.

Federer began crying, sobbing at times. But there were plenty of tears to go around in what were quite remarkable touching scenes. Nadal wiped away tears, the occasion clearly getting the better of the Spaniard.

Cascades of clapping and yells of affection came from the stands. Then wife Mirka and their four children – twin girls and twin boys – and Federer’s parents joined him on the court afterward for embraces and, you got it, more crying.

Even those not at the stadium were touched, with former Bel gian women’s star Kim Clijsters capturing the moment perfectly in a tweet which read: “Damn you

Roger ... will be walking around with swollen eyes for the whole weekend.’’

And what finale it was. Some way to bow out, to zip your tennis bag up for one last time in a professional setting. Perhaps we shouldn’t have expected any thing less from Federer because, for some time, his reputation as one of the game’s greats has long been secured, a fan favourite on every court all over the globe. The greatest of all time? Perhaps not, but his was a career that had it all.

At his best, and in times I have been lucky enough to see him play in the flesh, he really was the synonym for tennis. He had the grace, the style and the time.

Who will forget the one-handed backhand, the flawless foot work and even the willingness to reinvent parts of his game –like the serve-volley strategy he

introduced late in his career – to extend his longevity, as younger more powerful players emerged.

He’ll remain one of all sport’s finest athletes, who for two nearly decades bossed tennis at its high est level and set new standards on and off court for professionalism like few before him have, or those following ever will.

Sadly, injuries and Father Time eventually caught up with the great one but in London he ended it his way. Yes, not with a win, but with the grace and humility that made him such a sporting lord, a figure whose exploits transcend ed tennis.

“It’s been a perfect journey,” Federer told the fans in London, tears still rolling down his cheeks.

“I would do it all over again.”

Game, set and match. Federer. Oh, how we’ll all miss hearing that.

Pork industry: Has freedom of speech gone too far?

Thousands of submissions have been received on the draft Na tional Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC) animal welfare code for pigs released for public consultation.

The pork industry says the pro posed changes could force farm ers out of business and put the price of New Zealand-born and raised pork out of the reach of many New Zealanders.

For the past 35 years, Mid Can terbury pig farmer Ian Carter has “loved feeding the population”.

He has spent the past 19 years running his 2200 pig far row-to-finish indoor farm, pro ducing enough pork to feed 20,000 New Zealanders a year.

“I do enjoy doing it because I think they, the consumers, value what I do, but it’s not them that set the rules,” he said.

For Carter believed freedom of speech had gone too far, with modern technology meaning momentum could be gained to put across views not necessarily logical or appropriate.

Carter believed a proposal to dramatically change pig farm ing would result in poor animal welfare outcomes, including the deaths of “thousands” of piglets, and force more farmers to exit an already beleaguered industry.

Pig farming in New Zealand is a small industry which feeds solely New Zealanders and that was part of the problem, he said.

With only 90 commercial pig farms left, and because it did not export, the industry had “no voice” in Wellington.

For years, much noise had been made about the amount of imported pork - about 64 per cent of New Zealand consump tion.

While there was talk of the

need for a level playing field that was not possible - the draft code was above any imports, meaning none of the imported pork met the same regulations as its New Zealand counterparts.

Carter believed the proposal would “destroy” the production side of New Zealand’s industry while the processing side would

“just run on imported meat”.

The Carter farm employed three full-time staff, who all had families and were part of the lo cal community.

Without the piggery the prop erty – 750 bull beef were also grazed – it would take one person to run it.

Carter said free-farmed pork

Mark Love Contracting Ltd - Rakaia

did not necessarily mean better animal welfare, and there had been a “decimation” in numbers in that sector over the past 10 years.

He had questioned the capa bilities of the NAWAC committee to develop a code suitable for the industry, saying he believed the process was broken, so a “poor

outcome” was inevitable.

“To put up a list of options for the public to largely decide, fur ther demonstrates the complexi ty of the situation, that a solution isn’t clearly evident for NAWAC.

“For the good of our pigs, public perception of welfare shouldn’t be allowed to override science-proven welfare,” he said.

Betta Bees Research Limited (BBRL) artificial insemination bee breeding programme is to be wound up after 18 years of operation.

The company evaluated beehives in a closed breeding programme by matching up desirable traits to gain genetic improvement in Italian honeybees.

One of the directors of Betta Bees Peter Bell of Mackenzie Country Honey, who was involved with the company for three years, said, “It’s a bit of a negative story because it’s coming to an end.

“But I’m hopeful that someone else will keep it going.

“When you have multiple shareholders you need a board and a general manager and BBRL never got to that point.

“Things don’t get done properly because people don’t have the time.

“It has had an impact on the bee industry.”

The company was started 18 years ago by a group of South Island beekeepers. They worked together to improve the New Zealand breed of bee and had become a nationwide company. Most of the beehives and equipment were donated at the start along with many hours of voluntary work. The staff was employed to manage the

beehives and do three insemination runs per year.

Shareholders paid an annual research levy which entitled them to three AI breeder queens to use in their own beekeeping businesses each year.

The programme made significant genetic gains in the early years. Queens were selected for desirable traits like honey production and temperament. But like any breeding programmes, the gains become less as it got closer to the perfect bee.

Over the years the company never reached a scale of being able to afford a general manager, resulting in directors being involved in both governance and management.

“There is a reason why it didn’t get more shareholders – back then BBRL thought it was too exclusive whereas they should have kept the share price really low,” said Bell.

“There was also a problem in that a shareholder paid $7500 per year and that entitled them to three queens but BBRL could have cut that down to smaller shareholdings and a levy for just one breeder – this would have included more people.

“But the more the shareholders, the more you have to keep them on board. So as time

went by it made it harder because it spiraled down.

“We had staff and they used to communicate with shareholders but when we got rid of the staff that was no longer the case,” Bell said.

“It got to the point where everyone was relying on the other to do their voluntary stuff.”

A downturn in white and non-manuka honey prices and then manuka honey over the last four years put pressure on BBRL.

A number of shareholders stopped contributing to the research levy because of this downturn. Directors struggled to find time to do their demanding role or attract new directors onboard.

With not enough revenue to run the operation, in the winter of 2021, the hard decision was made to contract the operations to a private company for one year.

The board started a full tender process in the winter of 2022, for BBRL operation for a three-year contract term.

The board however was unable to receive a viable tender so with regret the directors of BBRL called for a special meeting to pass resolutions to put up for sale the assets and proceed with winding up the company.

Time to vote in Ruralco elections

The upcoming Ruralco Board election process is an important time for all shareholders to have their say on the oversight of the co-operative and how it moves forward, according to Ruralco chairperson, Jessie Chan.

“The election process is essential to ensure we have good shareholder engagement. As a co-operative, our shareholders own the business, which means it is their business and they need to have a say. This election process determines how all shareholders retain our control of their co-operative.

our shareholders own the business,

“It is important that people engage in the process, both through nominations for directors and through the voting process. We need as many shareholders as possible to vote and exercise their right to have their say,” she said.

This year the directors up for rotation are Jessie Chan and Tony Coltman, with Chan indicating she will not be seeking re-election, while Coltman has indicated he will be seeking re-election. Nominations are open, and close at 5.30pm, October 12. The election will take place at this year’s 59th annual general meeting which will be held on November 23 in Ashburton.

Don’t poke the bear!

Idon’t know if it was the sight of a Canterbury Wheelchair basketball player coming at me full speed with a manic, frenzied look in his eyes that did it, or whether it was my own provoking of such an attack that created the fear – but I’m sure my life flashed before my eyes on Saturday afternoon.

The Canterbury Wheelies were in town for their annual match against the Ashburton Celebrity team – a fixture usually placed as part of Wheels Week, but this year rescheduled due to illness and that wretched thing known as Covid.

I use the term celebrities lightly though.

Generally, it’s just whoever Pauline Paterson, who organises the match each year, decides needs a bit of torment that gets the chance to strap in and give it a go.

For some reason, I’ve played in the last four, so she must really think I need the punishment.

This year though, I dished out some to myself.

If you’ve never seen the Wheelies in action, it’s a must.

These guys are incredible. The skill and power they generate out on the court is actually remarkable to witness, and is a true pointer to the belief that you can do anything if you put your mind to it, irrelevant of life situations.

Because we’ve met a few times over the years, there’s a healthy rivalry there and some gentle ribbing is always encountered and offered, both before and during the match.

They don’t hold much back, and if you put yourself into a position to get blocked or hit then they’ll give it to you. Especially if you’re clicking in at over 100kg and look like you can handle a bit of a decent

shove, as I found out on Saturday.

It’s my own fault. I really need to learn when to shut my mouth sometimes.

I copped a good block from one of the Canterbury lads. Forceful, but fair and deserving. He wheeled away smiling and I automatically told myself to not poke the bear.

So, what did I do?

I poked the bear.

“You’ll have to hit me harder than that,” I offered.

Bad move.

The smile that instantly wreathed his face and the taunt that followed had me rapidly wheeling for the far reaches of the court and out of his way, as he casually lined me up.

I managed to avoid the inevitable for a few minutes, but when I picked up a loose ball near centre court, that was his opportunity.

These guys are so quick, so skilful. I should have known better.

He wound it right up and hit me, coming at me from probably 20 metres away, with a gleeful look on his face. And there’s now a mark on my leg to remind me why I shouldn’t bait people who know better than me.

Lesson learnt.

But what an occasion it was once again.

The celebrities team of Mayor Neil Brown, Leen Braam, Julie McGrath, Mary Summerfield, Phill Hooper, Rob Reid, Shona McGrath, Michael Calvert, Peter Jacob, Steve Devereux and myself managed to hold our own, thanks in large to some sharpshooting from the commander in chief, Brown, under the net – but it’s more about the experience than the result.

Those involved with the Canterbury Wheelchair Basketball team are outstanding sportspeople with a real love for competition.

I’m already hoping Pauline feels like I deserve some more punishment so I can get back out there next year.

These guys are incredible. The skill and power they generate out on the court is actually remarkable to witness, and is a true pointer to the belief that you can do anything if you put your mind to it

Close encounter in interprovincial

The Canterbury Croquet Association grabbed a narrow victory over the South Canterbury counterparts in the annual Basil The Ram interprovincial croquet tournament, held in Ashburton last week. The tournament, which pits eight pairings from each province, with South Canterbury including Ashburton players, took to the lawns for a day of competition with just one hoop separating the two sides at the completion of play. Competing in the Association Croquet variance of the sport, Canterbury made a strong start, edging out to a 16-hoop lead after the first round of games, but by the end of the second of the three rounds, that margin had been cut right back to just three hoops. The margin set up a tight race to the finish line, with the South Canterbury side unable to peg back the final deficit losing by just the one hoop. Pictured is Waireka’s Raylene Phillips presenting the Basil The Ram trophy to Canterbury’s Margarite Rogers.

National champions crowned

The Ashburton Squash Club closed off a massive week on Saturday as they hosted the finals of the F/J Grade National Super-Champs. 70 squash players from around the country congregated on the club for three days of play with champions crowned on Saturday afternoon before everyone was able to let their hair down on Saturday night. The Taihape Squash Club were victorious in the Women’s Final, heading off Squash Waipukurau who were second and Putaruru Squash Club who finished third. In the men’s even, Surf City Squash in Gisborne took overall honours ahead of Ohakune Squash Club who claimed second and Te Puke Squash who picked up third placing. While the F/J Grade finals were being held in Ashburton, the Ashburton Squash Club ladies team were in action Whangarei where they claimed eighth spot in the competition just dipping out to Surf City Club in the seventh and eighth playoff. of a spot in the Meads Cup, and it’s perhaps North Otago who look the most likely to edge their way into that division with games against West Coast and King Country still remaining.

And now, for the final push.

Mid Canterbury edged their way into the top four of the Heart land Rugby Championship with a narrow victory over Horowhenua Kapiti in Levin on Saturday – but the race for one of the top eight spots in the competition is still very much an active investiga tion.

A better points differential has pushed them ahead of North Otago and into Meads Cup con tention, but with matches against table-toppers, South Canterbury this week and then Whanganui the following, it’s a tough ask for the Hammers to keep themselves there.

Just four points separate the teams ranked fourth through to ninth with the final push over the coming fortnight set to be fraught with dangers at every turn, and all six sides still able to make the top flight of the competition when it comes to knockout rugby next month.

They should grab at least eight points from those match es, which would lift them above everyone else fighting for the fi nal spot in the Meads Cup – un less of course, Mid Canterbury create back-to-back upsets in the coming weeks that is.

If there’s a frustration for the Mid Canterbury camp and their supporters from the points ta ble, it’s that below Mid Canter bury sit King Country, Buller and East Coast, three sides who beat Mid Canterbury in circumstanc es where they perhaps shouldn’t have. Results in those matches would have the Hammers un defeated and potentially sitting at the top of the standings and in a far more comfortable posi tion looking toward the next two weeks.

The Hammers’ 15-13 score line on Saturday might not look like anything, but it’s a nod towards gritted determination to get the job done after they led 15-0 at the halftime break.

Playing with a good wind at their backs in the game’s first 40 minutes, they made solid inroads.

A try to newbie John Vasura kuta early on set some good in tent, and when Tyler Blackburn crashed over 30 minutes later, Mid Canterbury looked on track to grab a valuable five points from the match.

But it wasn’t to be. Horowhen ua Kapiti lifted in the second half and came charging back with two tries of their own, but despite throwing everything they had at the Mid Canterbury defence, it largely stood tall – a pleasing as pect for coaches John Sherratt, Grant Polson and Pete Manson for sure.

The trio used their entire bench in the match, with Logan Bon

nington forced to return to the paddock 10 minutes after being subbed in replacement for the in jured Kaydis Hona.

This week’s match against South Canterbury is set to be a massive affair. Not only are South Canterbury the competition leaders and undefeated for close to two years, but they’re Mid Can terbury’s greatest rival and clos est neighbour.

The match is set to break new ground with Sky Sport coming to Ashburton to provide live cover age of the game – the first of two games for Mid Canterbury with their match at Cooks Garden next week against Whanganui also tel evised.

Scoreboard

Mid Canterbury 15 (John Vasurakuta, Tyler Blackburn tries; Nathan McCloy pen, conv) beat Horowhenua Kapiti 13.

Other Heartland results:

Thames Valley 26 beat North Otago 21, Whanganui 83 beat Buller 7, King Country 32 beat East Coast 21, Wairarapa Bush 42 beat West Coast 30, South Canterbury 60 beat Poverty Bay 7.

Two weeks into his training ca reer and Tim White is officially on the board.

The Ashburton Raceway train er who joined in partnership with his father, strike-rate trainer Brent White, earlier this month opened his account as a trainer when Bobby Waterhouse broke maiden status at Motukarara on Sunday.

And the younger of the White duo, was nowhere to be seen.

Sticking in Ashburton to take care of things at the stables, White was watching on from home as he began what looks set to be a long and fruitful career in the training ranks with a serious ly impressive line-up of equine talent at his disposal.

“Someone’s got to the work at home and today Tim drew that straw,” Brent said.

“This is great for him though, he deserves it – he’s done all the

hard yards and been a huge help to me in recent years, so hopeful ly there’s a lot more to come.”

Owned by a group of loyal stable owners, Bobby Waterhouse has

been a frustrating but promising talent for the stable, purchased from the yearling sales. He’d raced eight times before Sunday’s meet ing, placing on seven occasions.

Kim Butt was able to get the gelding into the perfect posi tion on the back of the leader throughout the journey, and with a cold shot up the passing lane he

“I was a bit worried about him with the crossing here on the track, he can be a little bit funny sometimes,” Butt said.

“He was too busy looking at the people on the outside fence the first time, so he didn’t really no tice it, but he galloped over it af ter we’d passed the winning post which was a bit of a relief.

“He’s a nice horse, who will do a good job. Brent and Tim have worked hard with him and done a great job and he’s got a bit of promise ahead, I think.”

The White stable is set to step it up another notch this week as their build-up to New Zealand Trotting Cup Day officially begins with stable stars Cranbourne and Got You Covered.

After two public hit-outs the pair are likely to take their place in this week’s Canterbury Classic at Addington before plotting their way towards the big dance on the second Tuesday in November.

And now, with win number one on the board and registered, it’s full steam ahead for Ashburton’s leading harness racing stable.

What have we learned?

The All Blacks’ home test schedule closed out with an emphatic 40-14 win over the Wallabies at Eden Park on Saturday night, which meant that the Springboks required a 39 point win over the Pumas on Sunday morning to take The Rugby Championship title.

The South Africans didn’t get it.

So, after all the angst, the disappointing losses and talk of how this is the worst All Black team ever, they are now champions of southern hemisphere rugby yet again.

The irony of this situation isn’t something Ian Foster is thinking about, who said he was just “enjoying the moment”.

Is that a lesson to be learned perhaps for New Zealand rugby fans?

Here’s a few more things that we know after one of the most competitive instalments of TRC ever:

Ian Foster is quite good at beating the Wallabies – After three seasons, Foster’s All Blacks have beaten the Aussies six times, with one loss and a draw. One of those was a record margin of victory and another was the highest score ever against the Wallabies.

Yes, that probably should have been another loss in Melbourne, but even though it was a wild finish his All Blacks still had to find a way to win off the unlikely chance they were presented with.

The other sides are inconsistent, too – Fresh off a statement win over the All Blacks in Mbombela, what do the Springboks do? Lose.

What do the Pumas do after their first ever win in New Zealand? Get thrashed.

What do the Wallabies do after their most complete performance of the year, against the Springboks in Adelaide? Go to Sydney and limp to a disappointing loss.

This year’s championship simply came down to who could hold serve, which the All Blacks did.

If the All Blacks are playing on Eden Park, they can pretty much select whoever they want.

A lot of questions were raised at Foster’s side that played the Wallabies in Bledisloe II, Taylor in at hooker, Jordie Barrett at 12, an old people’s home of a propping rotation, but really it didn’t make any difference.

The last time the Wallabies won at Eden Park was the year that the original Top Gun movie topped the box office, and there is clearly a mental hurdle that affects them (and anyone else for that matter) when they play there.

So really, Foster could have named himself in that side if he wanted to. There will be a few at NZR secretly hoping to find a way to just move the All Blacks to Eden Park permanently, given the record there.

The midfield may well have found a solution – David Havili’s form at second five has mirrored the All Blacks’ up and down season, but his concussion-related stand down showed that the solution a lot of folks in Hurricanes country have been calling out for is not a bad one at all.

Jordie Barrett’s hard-running injection into the midfield gave the All Black attack a sense of directness, freeing up space for Rieko Ioane and Will Jordan outside him.

The skipper doesn’t need to be an 80 minute player – Sam Cane was subbed and the world didn’t end. Then he missed the last test anyway and the All Blacks simply cracked on. It is clear that

we’ve entered an era of the All Black captain watching the final stages from the sideline, which really is not a big deal, given that happens with Siya Kolisi in every test he plays.

Co-sharing the captaincy isn’t new either, the All Blacks had five last year anyway.

Sustainability the key

The win at Ellis Park should have been the turning point, but much of what the All Blacks achieved there was rubbed out a fortnight later in Christchurch when they lost to the Pumas.

That wasn’t a surprise, the performance against the Springboks was very much one that fed off the South Africans’ predictability and so from there, the gameplan that the All Blacks have run has very much been about smoothing out the rough edges to make them a one-size-fits-all threat package.

We saw it in Hamilton, then when they shot out to a big lead in Melbourne, but mostly in the win at Eden Park.

It still comes down to the Twickenham test – November 19 is the All Blacks’ date with destiny. The last test of the year will give us a very clear indication of where they’re at as we head into a World Cup year, not least with where their opposition are as well.

Remember: this time last year the All Blacks had won TRC and went on to record some big scores against Wales and Italy on the end of year tour.

But it didn’t count for much after they’d visited Dublin and Paris.

Coaching mere mortals could be a challenge – Murray

Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray said he hopes Roger Federer will stay involved in ten nis as he heads into retirement, but suggested the Swiss great is so gifted that coaching other players might prove difficult.

The 41-year-old Federer claimed 20 Grand Slam singles ti tles, ripped up the record books and is widely-regarded as the best player ever to wield a racket.

Murray was part of Team Europe as Federer bade a tearful farewell to tennis at the Laver Cup this weekend, having announced that the event in London would be the last of his 24-year career.

Federer has hinted that he would like to play exhibition events, but has been guarded about the chances of moving into coaching at some point in the future.

“I’m sure if he was to coach one day, which he obviously doesn’t need to – he would pick players that I’d imagine he’d be motivated to be coaching in the big matches and helping there,” Murray, who lost three Grand Slam finals to Federer, told reporters at the O2 Arena.

“The one thing that is I think difficult when you are as talented and have as many options as him

is to remember that not everybody can do the things that he did.

“He had the ability to play everything and he had so many options at his disposal that that’s the challenging thing also as a coach sometimes, especially someone in his position.”

Murray said it had been an emo tional night when Federer played alongside Rafa Nadal in what was his last match.

“Was lucky to be here and be present for Friday night,” Murray said, although he admitted when he finally decides to retire it might be a less memorable affair.

“I’m really not thinking about that right now.

“I certainly won’t and don’t de serve to have a send-off like that,” Murray said.

“You know, Roger did deserve that night, and it was super special having all of those guys there.”

Federer declined to say what his plans are, when asked after the match, but said being Laver Cup captain was not on the radar.

“No plans there. Bjorn (Borg’s) doing a great job. Thomas (En qvist) as well, supporting him all the way.

“It’s been great fun.

“Who knows, maybe one day, but we don’t have any plans so far.”
