Pregnancy is one of the most thrilling periods of a woman’s life. There is a great deal of excitement and anticipation surrounding a pregnancy, however this happiness is mixed with anxiety, because women have many questions and apprehensions about what is around the corner. Everyone wants to have a healthy and happy pregnancy, so the team at Envy have gathered information on how to keep looking amazing during your pregnancy, as well as some useful information on nutrition prior to and during pregnancy. We say go ahead, make those nine months of pregnancy a time to cherish forever! If the winter blues are getting you down at the moment, you may have some stress in your life you haven’t tackled. Carmen Flett is back on Page 4 to help us identify what in our life may be causing us stress, and identifying the excuses we use for not managing it correctly. Your work and family may benefit from you taking the time to read her pearls of wisdom. Do you have a taste for salmon? We take a closer look at the newly opened Salmon World, next to the beautiful Rakaia River. The unique Salmon Tales building, which is shaped like a salmon, hosts a number of activities designed to appeal to all ages and nationalities, and contains a number of unique and fascinating attractions with something for everyone. Well worth a visit the next time you are heading North. We have also had the pleasure this month to look through a gorgeous home in the heart of Methven, and invite you to take a look on Pages 8 and 9 at how a practical family home, can be stylish and inspirational. Is Christmas a dirty word in your workplace? Is it a time of stress and mega amounts of work? The team at Envy would like to make Christmas easier for you, by inviting you to start planning your Christmas function now! We give you an outline of what to consider in order to organise a Christmas party so amazing, your colleagues will still be talking about it well into next year, while at the same time being stress free. Achievable? We think so! Now all you have to worry about is making sure that a certain someone finds their way under your cleverly positioned sprig of mistletoe...

Here at Envy, if anyone referred to one of our team as a magpie, I doubt we would be offended, because we admit, we are attracted to shiny objects. It is this love of all things sparkly that inspired us to create a monthly column, all about jewellery. That’s right, every month we will have a page dedicated to gorgeous jewellery, and we will give you a peek as to where you can get your hands on these pretty items. For our recipe lovers, this month we have two delicious tempters, have a look on page 18 for some mouth watering inspiration. Oh by the way, here’s a little tip from the Envy team... if you shake the food before you eat it, we’re pretty sure the calories fall out, so go ahead and indulge. *wink. For garden lovers we have 2 pages packed with tips on growing the best veges, as we face head on 10 common problems and remedies associated with growing your own crops, and advice on how to plant a tree to last a lifetime. We have a coffee with the effervescent Sarah Davidson from the Ashburton Trust, who lets us in on her tastes in fashion and music, and we have a look at what hair trends are still big for this winter, to keep you lock looking ‘en vogue’. Natalie from Fashion NZ also gives us an exclusive look into one of the worlds trendiest people – Gok Wan. Gok can get women naked at the snap of his fingers and he provides style tips to some of the world’s most famous celebrities. He is back in New Zealand all the way from trendy London, to spread the word about how to look good in glasses. And finally, we offer another new feature that we will be bringing you each and every month... an insight into your love, work, family and personality. Yes we now have our very own horoscopes, brought to you by the mystical and insightful Madame Latanya, our very own psychic ‘Russian fairy princess’. So please, curl up in front of the fire, and enjoy this months edition of Envy. Stay gorgeous, Amanda and the team at Envy.

Check out Gok Wan’s trend preview for spring/summer 2010: What’s hot in fashion and eyewear for spring/summer 2010. According to Gok, more and more people are wearing specs for trend reasons, and glasses are a huge fashion accessory in Europe right now. Gok says we’re having one of the strongest years in fashion in ten years; we’re coming out of the recession and people are excited about fashion and shopping again, and that definitely extends to eyewear, which is becoming more and more fashion forward. Summer Brights The fashion – big bold colour statements, especially acid hues of teal and petrol blue. The specs – say it loud with bight splashes of colour. Minimalist The fashion – nude flesh tones, single statement pieces, worn without jewellery. The specs – contrast with a strong tortoiseshell or try pinks and nudes. FashioNZ Editor Natalie Cosgrove and her colleague Gracie with the one and only Gok Wan.

Story: Natalie Cosgrove FashioNZ It was with much excitement that Gracie (Beauty Bible editor) and I headed out in the pouring rain yesterday to meet and interview the one and only UK celebrity stylist Gok Wan, who was in Auckland to host a trend briefing as part of his role as Specsavers spokesperson and style guru. Along with a group of media, we waited patiently at the Specsavers store on Queen St for the star guest to arrive, having fun trying on pairs of glasses from the huge and fabulous range of frames on offer at the store.

The Gospel According to Gok At last the guest of honour arrived, impeccably turned out (as always) in a black suit, fashion-forward square black frames, and not a hair out of place. Gok gave us an exclusive trend briefing on the hot trends for spring/summer in fashion and eyewear. Read the fashion guru’s trend tips here. The first thing that strikes you about meeting Gok Wan is that he is so nice! He’s funny and natural, and you know that he’s just being himself, rather than putting on a persona for the media or for the cameras. Gracie and I were lucky enough to be among the first to sit down with him, to find out his thoughts on style, and whether he thinks Kiwis are fashionable... What do you think of New Zealanders’ fashion sense? Ahhhhh... (pauses.) Well, if I’m really honest, I think you either do it really well or really badly – and that’s me being incredibly honest, and I think that’s probably because I’ve spent a couple of days running around trying to find out where you guys go shopping, and you’ve got really limited stock here, really limited. Unless you’ve got a load of cash to go to the boutiques, you’re going to struggle. I purposely went out looking for ‘High St’ fashion, and I can’t work out why you haven’t got shops like H&M (UK & US fashion chain retailer) – you know, those massive, massive brand stores. But what I think you do well here is that you have no problem expressing yourselves, which is great! People work with what they’ve got. I forget sometimes how spoiled I am in London, having it all at your fingertips, and it’s not like that here. But there are people who really get it right. You have some really great dressers here, who really stand out so that’s a plus.

s Drapes s Uniforms

Oversized Tailoring The fashion – like Jill Sander statement jackets. The specs – pare back the frames with finer lines and detailing to complement the volume of the tailoring. Again titanium frames suit this style. Surf Girl The fashion – 1970s tie-dye pieces, sporty. The specs – wear earthy colours and retro shapes. Embellishment The fashion – think Balmain and Gucci, and anything that is dangly and shiny. The specs – Offset the sparkly detailing with masculine shapes in bold black. Moroccan Bazaar The fashion – earth tones, heavy prints and costume jewellery. I.e. Sex & the City 2 The specs – choose strong colours, like reddish earth tones or vivid turquoise. Summer Leather The fashion – leather isn’t usually a fabric associated with summer but it’s a big trend for the season. Try city shorts and shirts, and mini dresses in pinks and flesh tones. Don’t wear black as it will give too much of a winter feel. The specs – titaniums, tortoiseshells and blush pinks will complement leather tones. Sport Luxe The fashion – think 90’s Comme des Garcons, airtex, silks and parachute materials. Keep it feminine with heels. The specs – Edgy lines take this retro look back to the future.

Why are glasses sexy? I think glasses are sexy because they are unexpected. I think they have had such a bad rap for a long time; really since the seventies we’ve had three decades of not celebrating eyewear. And now, the whole of Europe has gone crazy for glasses in the last couple of years, because of the unexpectedness. Who do you admire style-wise? From a men’s point of view, I think Johnny Depp is brilliant. I was lucky enough to meet him once, he’s amazing. He didn’t have a clue who I was though! I just sat there and slobbered all over him – you can’t help yourself. And Sarah Jessica Parker is lovely. I presented the Sex and the City 2 premiere this year, and she was great. She rocked up wearing a Philip Treacy hat and Alexander McQueen, and you just go, ‘wow. You’re amazing’. She just works it. What’s your number one style rule, and your worst fashion crime? My number one style rule is dress before your body shape before trend. And my worst fashion crime – probably my eyebrows. I over-pluck the bastards! It’s one of those things you start when you’re young and you just can’t stop. What is the biggest misconception about you? Probably that I hate designer clothing, because I present ‘Fashion Fix’. But that’s not true – I adore designers. I collect clothes, and I have done since I was kneehigh to a grasshopper. What’s next for Gok Wan? My autobiography. I’ve just finished writing it. In fact, tomorrow morning in the hotel room I’ll be putting the finishing touches on it. It’s been one hell of a journey! You’ll have to let me know what you think of it, I’m really nervous about it.

Structured Tailoring The fashion – think Balmain shoulders and Balenciaga tailoring. Strong lines and edgy cuts. The specs – make a statement in monochrome or accent with a touch of red. Titanium frames work well.

Living your new perspective with Carmen Flett of Hell N Back Life Coaching “STRESS” Carrying on with the topic of stress this month, I wanted to touch on, WHAT IS YOUR TRUTH? We can experience stress when we are denying ourselves our truth. This can effect our lives, call it intuition, soul, you know the little tap, tap, tap that is put to the back of our minds. As a coach I see how this effects people more and more. These days because we get so busy, we don’t listen, and ignore living for ourselves. Even as parents, workers, students, etc, as individuals we all have our own truths, and fulfilling these is key. The truth is within every one of us, remembering it and acknowledging its importance is crucial for less stress. We have all sorts of excuses, I’m too busy, its not that important, I will get to it... one day. “STOP” It is extremely important! Its actually how we are meant to live, with out the world, or society dictating what we should be doing. Call it authentic or real living. Its not living the dream, its our choice. Slowing ourselves down and listening to what we really want, including less stress. Have you ever heard or said, Oh you are so lucky?, or I wish I could do that!. You will recognise the people who are choosing to live their life for themselves, with a lot less stress. They are inspiring, they

are happy, they glow and have a spring in their step. In fact they may even annoy you, because if only you could have that!! I hear... I cant have that! I don’t deserve that! I’m different because...... Blame it on their past, or upbringing! I’m tired I’m going to! This causes deeper stress, resulting in feelings of lost, despair, even depression, resentment and anger. Begin and commit to really listening to yourself. It can take practise, and commitment to start to take steps, to live a more fulfilled and happy life. It is how we are meant to live. Taking some time to relax, first your body then mind, will allow thoughts and ideas to come. Understand that we all have responsibilities, family, careers, homes etc and we all get busy. These are part of and can be wonderful parts to our life. It is important, if we can take 10 minutes every day, one step at a time, to have some quality time with ourselves, and get in touch with what makes us happy to bring that happiness into every day. In your minds eye, picture yourself with less stress, energised, happier. What would you be doing? Where are you? How can we make this happen? Write it down. What are you awesome at? Is it music, computers, athletics, sewing? What is it that floats your boat? Don’t hide from these things, discover what is your passion. Knowing your passions and doing them can only enhance our lives. Live your life your way, as you begin to live an authentic life. This is our right, and how life is meant to be experienced. Let negative stuff go! Especially if it is holding you back. Your stress levels will drop, its a natural process. Go on, give it a go :) Be a great day Carmen “Hell N Back Life Coaching”

Garden Over a coffee with...

Sarah Davidson from the Ashburton Trust.

What colour/style are you into at the moment? My style varies a lot depending on what city I’m in and what I think I can get away with! I love shopping on the high street and mixing and matching with unique items that I have designed or sewn myself, and of course those who know me, know that I’m an avid fan of the op shop! What are your hobbies? I love photography, and design. I am forever coming up with ideas for new projects that evolve into making something. I have recently done a screen printing course, so I have been making some cushions from designs I have done, mixed together with vintage fabrics What item of makeup can’t you live without? Brown eyeliner How do you keep fit? I’m currently playing Netball, and I enjoy classes like Body Balance & Zumba.

What’s your comfort food? I love pasta & cheese. Two terrible and yet wonderful things at the same time. I’ve made pasta from scratch before, but at the moment I am in love with an Italian range they have at the Somerset Grocer. What was the last book you enjoyed? I’m a terrible book reader, and always have been. I’m much more of a magazine girl! I love design and home style magazines like ‘Your Home & Garden’. What music are you into at the moment? I love kiwi music like ‘The Black Seeds’, and other similar funk/soul groups. If you could invite any three people to dinner who would they be? Brad Pitt. Rachel Ray. One of my closest friends, as the best experiences are the ones you get to share with people you care about! A tip, hint or piece of advice: My favourite quote – “Life isn’t about finding yourself, it’s about creating yourself”. I really believe in that.

Winter Hair Trends

Envy, August, Issue 23

Contemplating getting your locks lopped to brighten the winter months? Here are some tips on what’s hot right now! Gone are the angular bobs, overdone curls and enforced straightness – this season it’s all about gorgeous, luxurious hair shining through thanks to rich colour and personalised cuts, styled to be relaxed, yet glamorous… XXL volume hair is a must and this is a statement right from the best catwalks. Karl Lagerfeld, Oscar de La Renta and Prada condemn flat hair for winter 2010. Forget slicked-back hair, today it’s a fine toothed comb and a hairspray that will lead you to an ultra trendy teased hairstyle. To achieve super fine teased roots some hairdressers use a…toothbrush! Headbands are back en vogue! They can be used instead of hats just in case you don’t like 1940s’ splendor. Just feel free to

use your imagination to create a perfect hair looks with the ultimate hair accessory. It can be an elegant aliceband with feathers or a wide jewelry encrusted headband. Forgotten should be the days of overdone curls and sheet straight hair - Hairdressers are getting back to using their hands and minimizing the amount of product so the hair flows naturally. This is the sign of a truly good haircut. Top tip – If you’re running late and have 5 minutes to get your hair done...what should you do?? Scrunch or twist product into semi damp hair, encouraging natural fall whilst drying. Don’t be scared to use hair accessories for a fresh approach to your look. Move away from completely flat ironed hair and revive your hair’s personality.

r u o l o c r i a h e h t r e v o Disc e future of th s No more odour. No amonia. s Optimal scalp comfort. s Optimal respect* for the hair s Infinite colour power. Sublime shine. s Up to 100% white hair coverage. *Respects the hair’s natural essential amino acid and lipid balance.

Salmon World

The Salmon capital of New Zealand The Salmon capital of New Zealand invites you to experience a local tourism triumph, a fishy experience designed to delight all of the senses, including sight, sound, movement, touch and taste. A new aquarium and 4-D movie experience at Salmon World, Rakaia, allow the public to get up close and personal with one of our regions greatest assets, Salmon. Salmon World is the inspirational achievement of Pat and Kaye Turton and Neil and Judy Brown, who set up the adjoining Salmon Tales Café and Restaurant three and a half years ago. The intention of the impressive complex is to “get people to stop in Rakaia”, rather than cruise through. The complex is even shaped like a giant salmon, and is located just opposite Rakaia’s iconic leaping salmon sculpture on State Highway 1. It’s

about two decades since the Rakaia Lions Club and locals pitched in and put the iconic salmon on the side of State Highway 1. But now it’s going to have to share the limelight with fish much smaller but just as impressive - salmon, at every stage of the salmon life cycle in the aquarium. Salmon World is designed to appeal to all ages and nationalities and contains a number of unique and fascinating attractions with something for everyone, all based on the local Rakaia history of Salmon Fishing. It allows for a hands on experience of the local ecology, and is perfect for educational tours and school groups. The centrepiece of the aquarium is the 30,000-litre salmon tank housing large salmon and trout alongside a smaller multipool system with brown and rainbow trout, eels and whitebait. Videos provide visitors with information about the life cycle of the

salmon, fish and river conservation efforts and, of course, salmon fishing. As you follow the Rakaia Gorge Trail, visitors will be able to see the salmon life cycle from the salmon egg stages through to smolt and finally the adult fish. You will be able to learn about the history and operation of the Rakaia River Salmon fishery and view on monitors how Salmon are artificially spawned to allow fry to be reared for release into the Rakaia River. One of the great features of the complex, is that at specified times during the day you will be able to feed the Salmon, Trout and Eels (you may just have to watch your fingers with the eels.) This makes the educational experience fun for young and old. The aquarium is unique in that it only hosts freshwater fish. Most other aquariums focus on saltwater life, but the Salmon World Aquarium is one of

very few aquariums in New Zealand, that hosts specific species of trout and salmon, making it a truely unique experience. The focus of the aquarium is on telling a story about the Rakaia River and the fishery. The North Canterbury Fish and Game organisation provides invaluable support by supplying Salmon World with salmon or trout eggs every couple of weeks, depending on the season. This allows the continuation of a magnificent attraction. All the fish for the large aquarium, pools and fish ponds have also been sourced from Fish and Game except for the mature salmon, which have come from a local Salmon farm and carefully transported to Salmon World. These range in ages from small juveniles through to mature adults and will form the basis for the breeding and educational program. The other aquatic species on site include red

They can help with bookings including anyone wanting to experience the real thing after watching the 4D movie, making it a one stop shop for local tourism. The local artistic talents are showcased within the complex in the Rakaia Country Arts, a co-op of local artists. Fine arts and crafts all made within the region are sold through this outlet and they also host the Sunday Craft Markets throughout the summer. Salmon Tales Café and Restaurant has been in operation since November 2006 and has built a reputation based on fine food and great service set in unique surroundings. Salmon Tales offers indoor/outdoor flow including a large deck area which can seat up to 45 people, overlooking an established pond stocked with salmon and trout. The deck is an ideal setting for coffee, pre-dinner drinks or dining alfresco. The native plantings and sounds of running water have created a truly tranquil place. The Salmon Café and Restaurant interior

continues the water theme with a unique painted braided river floor. A relaxing carpeted area with comfortable leather chairs is situated alongside a large gas fire, a very popular place to be in the winter. The open plan dining area and stylish bar can be divided into intimate smaller areas or alternatively allows for large group functions, seating up to 80 people. The Salmon Tales Café and Restaurant is open 7 days a week from 8am including evening dining from Thursday to Sunday. An amazing family home in the heart of amazing space Methven

Far Left: The dining room, with glorious windows skyward, is aptly nic-named “The Church”, and is used daily by the family. Above left: Unique light fixtures feature in the entrance, and living area. Above right: Exposed aggregate concrete with matching pots, feature prominently in the front entrance, and extensive in the rear outdoor living area, for a stylish and rugged finish. Left: Passionate red features in key areas in the kitchen, to add vibrancy to the decor.

Story: Amanda Niblett Photos: Sarah Chamberlain Mid Canterbury provides so many opportunities to live the perfect lifestyle, you can live within walking distance to restaurants and entertainment, yet rural enough to be surrounded in paddocks of lush green land with breathtaking mountain views. Julianne and Dave McLeod have taken full opportunity of this with their gorgeous house in Methven, and have managed to blend practical family living with modern style in the country.

Dave built their house, and as it is their 3rd home they have built for themselves, they have learnt a few lessons on functionality and durability to suit a family lifestyle with their two sons, Cam and Dal, aged 12 and 11. Dave owns Snowfed Builders, a Methven building company with a great local reputation, and Dave also gives back to the community being a volunteer firefighter with the Methven Brigade. The first thing you notice when arriving is the expansive design, with the house stretching both left and right from the main entrance. Dave and Julianne, through chance and fortune, discovered the plan for their house in a New Zealand house plan book, at a Methven book shop while casually browsing. They fell in love with the uniqueness of the design, and contacted the architect to work with them in creating their dream plan, making a few changes.

Being in Methven, they were conscious of the hot summers and cold winters, plus the raging Nor West winds, so the home was cleverly constructed, insulated and double glazed to cover these challenges. The exterior texture features genuine Oamaru stone, with Dave and Julianne tripping down to Parkside Limestone Quarry to view how the blocks were made before deciding to use it. The garden outside the front door features a rock design in the form of a Koru, and will become a rose garden, dedicated to Julianne’s mum and Dave’s Dad whom both passed away in 1999. When you enter the house you are warmed by a large, spacious entrance, adorned by art by popular artist Karen Smith. There is a display of antique building instruments as a testament to Daves trade, combined with modern ornaments, creating a cross of traditional

and modern. There is a feature light on the wall above the art displayed, in a funky and unique design, mixing a wrought iron look with modern speckled glass. These feature lights are repeated in the main living area, and were a spontaneous purchase in Christchurch, no design pre-meditated, they caught Julianne and Dave’s eye and they fell in love with the look. The modern yet almost medieval iron look is repeated in the other main light fixtures, in the style of large metal chandeliers in the entrance, main living areas and the dining room. Living areas feature a high stud, so the hanging light fixtures create a dramatic look, highlighting the height of the stud, while also filling space with classic beauty. The colours throughout the home feature a neutral pallet, and they have used modern, colourful furnishings to give the home a warm, sophisticated feel.

Far Left: The kitchen opens to the main living area, a gorgeous blend of colours, with the granite bench top an impressive feature. Far bottom left: The master bedroom takes advantage of the spectacular views toward the snow capped mountains and Rakaia Gorge. Bottom closer left: The stone Koru feature sits close to the front entrance, and will soon become a rose garden, dedicated to Julianne’s mum and Dave’s dad. Immediate left: The stylish entrance hosts art by artist Karen Smith, illuminated by a funky feature light. Richly designed drapes with strong designs feature prominently throughout the house. The open living area features large exposed beams, which are Pine Glulam beams weighing 250kg each. These were specially shipped from Auckland, and make for a stunning feature, accentuating the high stud. The living area opens up to a modern kitchen, cleverly adorned not to date. The tiles and joinery are in neutral colours, similar to a Mid-Canterbury summer, for longevity, but there is a deep, passionate red in key areas, such as behind the splash back, to add vibrance. These red areas were carefully chosen so if a change was in the wind, they could simply repeat these areas and the kitchen would have a fresh new look. The extravagant item of purchase is the large granite benchtop, in a deep, charcoal grey. Although the family use the benchtop daily, the hardy benchtop hardly looks a

day older then when it was purchased. In the corner of the kitchen is Julianne’s favourite piece of art, a sculpture of a family given to her by a friend. For Julianne, it signifies the importance of her own family in her life. Because family is important to Dave and Julianne, one of the greatest testaments to the home is its ability to be lived in by two rambunctious, rugby loving boys. It takes the knocks of every day life but still looks fantastic. The main living area opens to three main sanctuaries’s, used daily by the family, the outdoors, the library and the dining room. The outdoor patio stretches alongside the home, and is constructed from an attractive exposed aggregate concrete, also used in the entrance to the home. This style is mimicked in pots that line the patio. The exposed aggregate is hard wearing, and easy to maintain, while creating a stylish

look. The family can relax under the stars from within their outdoor spa, or take in the magnificent views of the Southern Alps from their large outdoor table, perfect for summer alfresco dining. The plantings that line the property will continue to grow to help create shelter from the Nor West winds. The library enfolds from doors in the living area, to present a tranquil hideaway. Julianne loves to read, so it provides an area for serenity and quiet time to their busy schedule, while also giving the opportunity to increase the entertainment area for guests. The dining room, aptly nic-named ‘The church’, also leads off the living area. It features high, stunning windows, accentuating the tremendous height of the room, while warming with room with heavenly light. A long hallway leads to the bedrooms and bathroom, and if you look skyward,

there is an impressive skylight beaming light through the hall. The skylight was originally planned to be larger, but taking into consideration Methven’s tendency for winter snow, the weight risk was too great. The master bedroom takes advantage of the serene mountain vista with large corner windows, but not too large taking into consideration the nor west winds. It has a warm Mediterranean feel, with stained exposed timber to mimic the exposed timber featured throughout the rest of the house. Perhaps the most aptly named paint on the market, the bedroom features the colour ‘lusty’, to add to the warm, sensual feel. Overall the house exhibits a warm feeling, the colours are soothing and modern, and it is refreshing to see design used to create a home that is as much practical for family living as it is visually appealing.

Gardening Hints & Tips Planting a Tree

Think of the tree you just purchased as a lifetime investment. How well your tree, and investment, grows depends on the type of tree and location you select for planting, the care you provide when the tree is planted, and follow-up care the tree receives after planting. The ideal time to plant trees and shrubs is during the dormant season, Winter or early spring. Weather conditions are cool and allow plants to establish roots in the new location before spring rains and summer heat stimulate new top growth. Proper handling during planting is essential to ensure a healthy future for new trees and shrubs. Proper site preparation before and during planting coupled with good follow-up care reduces the amount of time the plant experiences transplant shock and allows the tree to quickly establish in its new location. Carefully follow nine simple steps, and you can significantly reduce the stress placed on the plant at the time of planting.

2.

3.

4.

1. Dig a shallow, broad planting hole. Make the hole wide, as much as three time the diameter of the root ball but only as deep as the root ball. It is important to make the hole wide because the 5.

roots on the newly establishing tree must push through surrounding soil in order to establish. Identify the trunk flare. The trunk flare is where the roots spread at the base of the tree. This point should be partially visible after the tree has been planted. Remove tree container for containerized trees. Carefully cutting down the sides of the container may make this easier. Inspect the root ball for circling roots and cut or remove them. Place the tree at the proper height. Before placing the tree in the hole, check to see that the hole has been dug to the proper depth and no more. The majority of the roots on the newly planted tree will develop in the top 12 inches of soil.. If the tree is planted too deeply, new roots will have difficulty developing because of a lack of oxygen. It is better to plant the tree a little high, 2 to 3 inches above the base of the trunk flare, than to plant it at or below the original growing level. This planting level will allow for some settling (see diagram). To avoid damage when setting the tree in the hole, always lift the tree by the root ball and never by the trunk. Straighten the tree in the hole. Before you begin backfilling, have someone view the tree from several directions to confirm that the tree is straight. Once

you begin backfilling, it is difficult to reposition the tree. 6. Fill the hole gently but firmly. Fill the hole about one-third full and gently but firmly pack the soil around the base of the root ball. Be careful not to damage the trunk or roots in the process. Fill the remainder of the hole, taking care to firmly pack soil to eliminate air pockets that may cause roots to dry out. To avoid this problem, add the soil a few inches at a time and settle with water. Continue this process until the hole is filled and the tree is firmly planted. It is not recommended to apply fertilizer at the time of planting. 7. Stake the tree, if necessary. Studies have shown that trees establish more quickly and develop stronger trunk and root systems if they are not staked at the time of planting. However if staking is necessary for support - two stakes used in conjunction with a wide, flexible tie material on the lower half of the tree will hold the tree upright, provide flexibility, and minimize injury to the trunk (see diagram). Remove support staking and ties after the first year of growth. 8. Mulch the base of the tree. Mulch is simply organic matter applied to the area at the base of the tree. It acts as a blanket to hold moisture, it moderates soil temperature extremes, and it reduces competition from grass and

weeds. Some good choices are leaf litter, pine straw, shredded bark, peat moss, or composted wood chips. A 2- to 4-inch layer is ideal. More than 4 inches may cause a problem with oxygen and moisture levels. When placing mulch, be sure that the actual trunk of the tree is not covered. Doing so may cause decay of the living bark at the base of the tree. A mulch-free area, 1 to 2 inches wide at the base of the tree, is sufficient to avoid moist bark conditions and prevent decay. 9. Provide follow-up care. Keep the soil moist but not soaked; overwatering causes leaves to turn yellow or fall off. Water trees at least once a week, barring rain, and more frequently during hot weather. When the soil is dry below the surface of the mulch, it is time to water. Continue until mid autumn, tapering off for lower temperatures that require lessfrequent watering. We are fortunate in Mid-Canterbury to have many experienced nursery owners, with years of experience, to offer you the best advice on what type of tree suits your property. They can advise you on all of the after planting care and are only a phone call away to offer after sales advice, to make sure you are getting the best possible result from your nursery investment.

The Vege

Garden Doctor

Most homes have a first aid kit and medicine cabinet ready for when things go wrong. Generally they contain all the basics to patch up and remedy minor health injuries and ailments. The garden is no different, it pays to have a well stocked garden shed with all the basics to keep your garden healthy and remedy any problems that may occur. Many gardeners have planted out their vegetable gardens for this season and are starting to notice that some crops are not doing what they should. What does one prescribe for common problems in the vege garden?

4.

5.

10 Common problems and remedies 1. Holes in leaves are starting to appear on lettuces, cabbages and broccoli. Most likely these are caused by slugs and snails. Hit them hard by using Quash Slug and Snail Bait. This bait is the only animal friendly bait which is eaten will not harm cat’s dogs or other pets. It should be a staple in any garden shed. 2. Yellow leaves on Lemons and other citrus. The bronze or patchy yellowing in spaces between the veins of green leaves shows a magnesium deficiency. Remedy this problem by applying Epsom Salts, which is high in Magnesium. Citrus need magnesium to create chlorophyll for strong healthy leaves and flowers for fruit production. 3. Lack of hearting in broccoli, lettuce, cabbage and cauliflower is often caused by using too much nitrogen. Apply Fruit and Flower – Sulphate of Potash

7.

8.

which is a fruit and flower booster rich in potassium. Not only does it cure the problem is also encourages disease resistance and healthy foliage. Mouldy leaves on Zucchini, Cucumbers, Pumpkins, Raspberries, Brassica’s and Beans is often mildew, this is usually caused by humid conditions, lack of air movement and inconsistent watering – don’t let your plats dry out. Use Mite and Mildew Control powder to control. This can also be used as a bulb duster (before planting bulbs) Compost heaps are becoming smelly and don’t seem to be breaking down quickly. Add Compost Enhancer - hydrated lime, this accelerates composting and releases nutrients to plants once compost is ready. 6. Yellowing and discoloured leaves on runner beans, French beans and Peas are often caused by a tiny insect called the two spotted mite. They generally live underneath plant leaves and suck the chlorophyll from the foliage causing the leaves to change colour. Use Mite and Mildew Control powder to control and insure when spraying that you get good coverage under the leaves. Little or no flowers on Tomatoes, Beans, Raspberries, Potatoes and Capsicums can be caused by a lack of Potassium. Apply Fruit and Flower booster, Sulphate of Potash to encourage flower and fruit formation. It also will encourage disease resistance and healthy foliage and enhance colour and flavour. Stunted plant growth, Wilting of young seedlings, distorted growing tips, buds

and shoots and yellowing of older plant leaves normally indicates a plant is lacking in copper. Apply Bluestone – Copper Sulphate to correct the problem. Copper is essential in several enzyme systems, particularly in new tissues. 9. Getting into vegetable gardening so much that you soil is looking a little tired? Since growing vegetables extracts nutrients from the soil this needs to be replaced. Micro Nutrients Trace Elements helps to regenerate and correct soil nutrients to make soils and veggies healthier 10. Looking for that extra boost in the ‘pick and grow’ lettuce patch? Leaves not growing as fast as you’d like? Try adding Nitrogen Booster to the soil – it’s urea which is a fast acting form of Nitrogen and encourages green leafy growth

Early identification and quick action will limit the damage done by invading pests and diseases. Be prepared by having the essentials in your gardens medicine cabinet. Make sure what you munch don’t crunch!

Nutrition to protect your bundle of joy Now that you’re trying to conceive, it’s time to overhaul your eating habits . Your preparation for your pregnancy in advance will greatly influence your experience, during and long after your pregnancy. While a healthy diet is no guarantee of conception, being healthy improves your fertility and increases your chances of having a healthy pregnancy. This applies to your level of nutrition, any cleansing you’ve done, the quality and harmony of your relationship with your partner, and most importantly, your desire and commitment to share your life with your new child. First of all, you should schedule an appointment with your health care provider before you start trying to conceive. Your health care provider can address any concerns you may have related to your personal medical history or condition, as well as any lifestyle habits you have that could affect your baby. This is also a good time to talk about your family medical history, your partner’s medical history and any possible inherited conditions in your partner’s family. Here are five things you can do to improve your diet and safeguard your (and your baby-to-be’s) health. 1. The importance of Folic Acid and Omega 3. Studies show that the earlier you start getting enough of this vital vitamin, the lower the chances that your baby will develop neural tube defects (such as spina bifida). Where can you find folic? Most leafy green

vegetables and whole grains are naturally full of it, or a supplement can be the most realistic way to fit folic acid in day after day after day (especially once you find those days filled with nausea). Choose a prenatal supplement with 400 to 600 mcg (micrograms) of folic acid to be sure you’re getting your fill. Your baby’s nervous system begins developing as soon as you conceive. Essential fatty acids, like the Omega-3 fatty acid DHA, are, well, essential to your baby’s brain and nervous system development. You should begin consuming adequate essential fatty acids or taking a fatty acid supplement before pregnancy so that your body has adequate stores of this important nutrient as soon as they are needed. 2. Slam dunk the Junk. Reduce refined sugars and white flour, which are usually found in cookies, lollies, chocolate, pastries...and replace these foods with wholegrain options, and natural forms of sweetness such as honey. Slash saturated fats. Try healthier alternatives to fries such as a side salad, choose seared chicken over crispy, and replace potato chips with wholegrain crackers. Less fat and sugar is better for your baby, plus a high intake of such fats appears to increase the risk of severe pregnancy nausea and vomiting. 3. Relish the right stuff. Increase all the good things that your body (and your baby-to-be’s body) needs: leafy green vegetables and salads, yummy yellows (apricots, carrots, papaya, mango), hearty whole grains (whole-wheat bread, brown rice, oatmeal), and low-fat dairy. 4. Stop being a meal skipper. Are you always more interested in rushing to work than breaking for breakfast? Working through lunch instead of eating it? Skip a meal when you’re eating for two and baby skips it too. Get into the three-squares habit now so that when baby’s on board, he or she will be getting a steady supply of nutrients throughout the day. 5. Become an Iron-woman. Iron needs increase during pregnancy and if you are low on iron before pregnancy you could be at risk of becoming iron deficient or anemic. Supplements will help you maintain levels on a daily basis, but try for a more natural approach of deep green vegetables and lean red meat. Alcohol As well as avoiding alcohol during pregnancy it’s also important to do the same when planning pregnancy. Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can effect foetal development causing irreversible damage. This can include: damage to the central nervous system, intellectual deficits, learning difficulties, language disorders, behavioral problems including hyperactivity and attention deficit. It also causes distinct atypical facial features.

Tessa Benham Is it me or is the baby bump the new black? There has been a huge surge in celebrities having babies and a rise in the fashion conscious, stylish yummy mummy in Hollywood. Baby bumps and bottles are now seen weekly on the covers of all the magazines, clad in the latest fashions. What happened to leggings and a baggy tee-shirt I hear you say?! Nicole Richie has truly turned pregnancy fashion into, well fashion. And hooray for that! This surge in baby making has been great for us Kiwi women on this side of the globe too, in that now we have a weekly baby style guide for all our maternity wear needs from shopping to that night out, in every gossip mag on the stands. So the celeb ‘mom’ keeps working (sometimes while in labour it seems), and this is a trend that’s fast becoming the norm here too. So how do you retain your personality and style during an office pregnancy, and how can you use these to spur your energy throughout your work day? Firstly work with what you have in your wardrobe already, celebrate your curves with stretch clothing used to its full potential. Wrap dresses and tops are definitely your friend during this time, especially the snugly NZ made merino

ones available to keep you warm with patterned stockings and knee high boots. And pull out those boho flowing tops you used to cinch tightly round your waist and let them work in a new way. Get your local tailor to cut the waistband of the old trousers and pop on a stretchy band for a whole new life. Most importantly think the same way about your body shape as you did before, so if the waist was always your best point, wrap your belt under your bust instead and create an empire line cinched waist. This means your hips and your burgeoning belly can remain discreet but you don’t become a round shapeless blob. Scary yes, but a common maternity fashion mistake! And vice versa, if you keep your great legs, draw attention to them with skinny legged trousers, a covered topped mini dress and great stockings! Accessorises can really speak out for your colourful personality on the days you just feel like hiding in a cocoon of black. Go through your jewellery box and find forgotten gems or invest in key trend pieces to show your still in the game. These can also distract the eye from your new curve. Your pre-bump suit jacket unbuttoned with a black stretch top and

chunky beads allows an easy corporate look, or use sequined shouldered tops or eye catching earrings to take the focus off the baby and retain a corporate vibe. Even men can get in on a stylish dad look with such a huge range of masculine baby bags to keep nappies, bottles and all the myriads of other baby stuff looking swish (and organised too) once baby arrives. Also important of course, underwear. Thank god I’m in this generation of mums to be, if not just for Hot Milk and Elle McPherson maternity lingerie, to keep the fires stoked in the boudoir, mum feeling like the sexy women she is, and providing a wire-free base for her wardrobe to be built on during these months. Lingerie makes you feel good inside and out, day and night. And the best thing is they now hide those chunky maternity clips, with folded ribbon and diamantes! A great excuse to buy new lingerie! Finally, when your dressing for work and you think this bump cant get any bigger, remember this quote from gorgeous mum Julia Roberts: ‘My stomach was enormous! The bigger it got the smaller my ass looked so I kind of enjoyed it’. Hey at least that’s one thing!

Envy, August, Issue 23

Tis the season... Story: Amanda Niblett It’s that time of year again, when winter is nearing its end and its time to think about the perfect Christmas venue for your office party or social event. The search is having to start earlier and earlier as Christmas venues are getting more and more difficult to find as they are booked out months, even years in advance. The annual office Christmas party is essential for good team building, staff motivation, rewarding employees and to say thank you for the hard work over previous months. The balance needs to be achieved of thanking everyone for their hard work and commitment to the organisation, and motivating your team toward the same commitment for the future.

The perfect Christmas party doesn’t have to be the most elaborate or expensive. The perfect Christmas party is the warm, friendly event that people talk about all year long A successful party lives on in everyone’s memory long after the last glass of punch has been sipped and the last bite of dessert eaten. But the fuss and frustration of planning can be a big party pooper. All the details -- What kind of party should I have? Whom should I invite? How should I decorate? What do I serve? -- can make even the most experienced host or hostess a little stressed. If you add to this equation, the many demands and complications of the holiday season, you have the recipe for a real headache. Though the rewards of a successful Christmas party will carry on all year, some people might feel that the planning and execution is just too much of a burden. The most favoured approach, for a stress free experience, is to book a venue that can take care of everything to cater to your groups needs. Food, alcohol, decorations, entertainment and possibly transportation or accommodation, all taken care of by the chosen venue, leaves the planner more relaxed to have fun with their family and friends. There are two important issues to consider when looking for the perfect Christmas venue - location

and atmosphere. Although you need to ensure that the location of your Christmas venue is as central as possible for all invitees, you also need to ensure that the Christmas venue you choose is right for your event. Almost any venue can claim to host the perfect Christmas party, but you have to find the one that is right for you. In Mid-Canterbury, we are lucky that we have such a wide variation of venues perfect for the occasion, covering a wide geographical area. Look for a Christmas Venue that is geographically central to a majority of invitees, but also that has a range of options for those who wish to stay the night. That way if your group is feeling a little more adventurous, and want something a little further away for a unique experience, accommodation or organising transportation is important for a successful evening. Once the issue of location and accessibility has been solved, the issue of atmosphere has to be addressed. There are a multitude of places that flag themselves as Christmas venues, but you need to decide what ambience you want to create. Do you want a posh black tie Christmas event, in which case there are a range of exceptional locations in Mid Canterbury that cater specifically for this market, or do you want a more intimate, refined setting such as a

restaurant for a traditional Christmas meal? Don’t be scared to ask the venue manager many questions to ensure they will provide the best atmosphere possible for your Christmas function. Do they allow for specialised menu options such as Gluten Free or Vegetarian options? Do they decorate or will they allow you to decorate? Can they provide party favours such as crackers or table scatters, or will you need to provide this yourself? What time are they licensed to? Can you provide your own alcohol, and if so what is the corkage charge? Do you have the place exclusively or will you be sharing the space with another party?

After your perfect venue is booked, and the atmosphere is decided upon, don’t forget to ask your attendees if they have any special requirements, so these can be addressed and catered for early. Then once you are advising everyone of your exciting plans, be sure to be clear on the atmosphere and requirements, so everyone is clear on what they are doing. There’s nothing more embarrassing for people to arrive under-dressed, over-dressed, or in costume when others are casual. Also they will need to know in advance if they are expected to be paying for any portion of the meal or drinks, and if partners are included in the invitation. Be clear if children are welcome or not, and if you are having a secret Santa, be sure everyone is

clear on who they are bringing a present for, as it’s no fun when someone misses out on a gift from Santa. Set price limits on these gifts, and let people know if they are silly or serious gifts. The best of Christmas functions will promote harmony and camaraderie between the company’s employees and this is often achieved with team building activities. There are countless options: a Christmas scavenger hunt, a costume contest, or a Christmas carol contest. These types of games are the best, because they force unfamiliar people to work together towards a common goal, bringing people from different backgrounds or departments at work closer together. Most importantly, be a responsible

15

host. Alcohol should supplement your party, complement your party, but never dominate your party. Check to see if your venue has a shuttle service, or actively arrange sober drivers and taxis. Or for the ultimate in safety, book accommodation for your jubilant party goers. Your stars,

with Madame Latanya...

August 2010

Aries Mar 21 - Apr 19 You may find yourself attracted to a more mature person this month, as problems in an old relationship may manifest. The 20th is an energetic time of the month for you, be careful not to take short-cuts at work as these may come back to bite you later, and a past love may re-enter your life around this time also. The 24th is promising to shed some light on a situation that may have been troubling you, a secret will be revealed. Mars, your ruling planet, is in your opposite sign of Libra, and so is Saturn. This will make August trickier than usual, and you may find some stubbornness is trying to block you from achieving what you desire.

Cancer June 21 - July 22 This is an especially lively month for home and family. Competitive energies on the domestic scene are likely. Job or status changes continue to loom, but a sense of peace this month gives you a breather. Some of you are taking work home with you, where you feel a little more comfortable. Circumstances are such that you need to take charge of money matters now. August is certainly a good month for creating a budget. Get your paperwork sorted out before the 20th, after which any corner-cutting you’ve taken may turn out to add rather than save time. Hold back your negative energy, it could prove detrimental.

Libra Sept 23 - Oct 22 As you finished July, Mars and Uranus were locked in a dead-heat battle for dominance, and you may have been surprised at how vehemently a partner or collaborator was challenging your opinions and blocking your path. August is playing out much more positively for you. You are especially charming this month, and the 21st brings particularly good energy your way for love and happiness. Turn July’s competitiveness into energy to keep your love stimulated. Because of your charm you are virtually unstoppable. Go for what you desire, but try not to ruffle feathers on the way. The 24th will resolve questions you have had with work or health matters.

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19

A hive of activity is buzzing it’s way to you around the 24th, which could see you running around like a headless chicken getting everything done. Try not to stress out and just take everything one step at a time, everything will come to order, just remember to breathe. Capricorns have coped with an enormous amount of upheaval lately due to the recent eclipses on June 26 and July 11, so you will be currently focusing on your career and relationships more intensely than usual. While your relationships are important, close attention to your career is particularly important at the moment. New responsibilities will be heading your way, and you will need to be at the top of your game to deal with them effectively.

Taurus Apr 20 - May 20 You have the opportunity this month to smooth over some differences within your work place. There is a competitive energy surrounding your work, but someone whom you didn’t trust may prove to be your most trustworthy companion. Toward the end of the month, a lover may be giving you mixed signals, so perhaps this is the opportunity for you to step back, take a breath, and do what is best for you. Focus on your fitness this month, but take some time to relax. Try and pay more attention to your home and family this month, as work will get busier progressively through the month.

Gemini May 21 - June 20 Planetary energies will be whipping up wild and powerful winds in early August. If you have children, this month is a good time to set some boundaries and introduce a routine and discipline. It needs immediate attention, as once that is set in place, you will have more time to enjoy spending together. August promises to be highly playful and inspirational, so make the most of inspiration heading your way, be it a hobby, or more time in your love life. The end of the month after the 22nd promises to hold exciting information regarding your career.

Leo July 23 - Aug 22 This is an especially lively month for home and family.

Virgo

Aug 23 - Sept 22 Virgo, you are already heavy with burden, problems from years past still holding you down. Don’t burden yourself with more problems this month, try and release yourself from the problems that are still weighing on your mind. If you are to help your dreams to come true in the months to follow, you need to lighten yourself now. Next month is the month to make a fresh start. After the 24th, a partnership matter is brought to light, pay attention to what a close friend is trying to tell you. They may help you unburden some of your load.

Sagittarius

Scorpio

Oct 23 - Nov 21

August promises to be very rich for you Scorpio, with a relationship possible, or feelings for a past love will awaken. The 25th brings great creative energy, as well as the possibility of that lingering romance. Work is competitive, but you might find that it’s more stimulating this way and pushing you to work more creatively, but don’t let that power go to your head, you need to watch how you treat family and workmates as you may find yourself getting a little too big for your boots. The end of the month sees a more relaxed you, with focus shifting from work to your social life.

Nov 22 - Dec 21

You will find confrontation in the air in August, with associates and friends. Don’t automatically think of these encounters as negative, as they may prove mentally stimulating, energising you to take hold of your life and make significant leaps forward toward an important project. Financial issues may be tense this month, however if you make changes this month to improve the situation, you will be in a much better position in a few months. An energy boost will see you breaking routine and feeling more adventurous. Make the most of this boost to set a more, energetic routine. From the 23rd, your career will take focus, and if you’ve cut any corners recently, these may need some attention to get you back on track.

Pisces

Aquarius

Feb 19 - March 20

Jan 20 - Feb 18

Your ruler, Uranus, is moving back into Pisces this month, and while symbolically this might point to a feeling of backtracking, it’s more likely that you are looking back for the time being, rather than pushing forward. It will be a time for reflection, rethinking and reviewing, rather than for new decision making and moving forward. Exciting changes are on the horizon, and this is a good period for tidying up and getting in touch with what you truly want from your life. However, your personal magnetism is strong this month and others are very cooperative. If you’re interested, you’ll find that it’s easy to attract others to you, particularly with your unique opinions and personality.

This month your work assumes more importance and keeps you busy. Whether it’s about added responsibilities, a promotion, or simply a new take-charge attitude, now is the time to prove your worth. Your passion will be running high around the 20th, when many of you will enjoy personal satisfaction and a profound connection with a special someone. You have a beautiful soul, and are one of the most caring in the zodiac, try not to let others intimidate your delicate spirit with their negative energy. A Full Moon in your sign occurs on the 24th, and emotions run high. Remain beautiful to yourself, and others will always recognise that beauty in you.
