Tis the season to be jolly, and as decorations glitter and lights twinkle throughout the streets, carols majestically float through the airwaves and pure excitement lights up the faces of our children, you can’t help but smile, and brace yourself for weeks of indulgence and laughter.

Christmas is without a doubt my favourite time of the year, because it gives us the opportunity to get festive and generous with everyone we love. It is a time for laughing so hard that our tummies hurt while sharing strawberries and wine with friends. A time for embracing our families and being thankful for being able to spend happy and glorious time together, while snapping Christmas crackers during family dinner. A time to warm our hearts, seeing pure excitement and joy on our children’s faces as they grin and laugh during the festivities, enjoying a myriad of treats all at once. A time to stop and tell the person you love how special they are, absorbing all their love and warmth in return, and seeing the twinkle in their eyes as you both soak up the magical moment together. This month we take a moment to talk to a family that will be experiencing Christmas away from their home country, and discover how they still make Christmas special away from their family and friends. For those of you that love to leave your Christmas shopping until the last minute, we have loads of gorgeous gift ideas inside for last minute inspiration. Barkers have given us a scrumptious fruit mince pie recipe that is sure to be a winner in your household this Christmas, and there is an exciting giveaway of Barkers products to a lucky reader. If New Years Resolutions are on your mind already to help deal to the up-coming over indulgences, our local fitness experts at
Fitbiz have come to our rescue with top Swiss Ball exercises to trim and tone in the New Year. We have grown up with the traditional Christmas story of the three wise men, this Christmas we share the stories of three inspirational women for your reading enjoyment. Sharon Kermode (nee Jacobs) is a talented photographer who can style your wardrobe inspiring new found confidence, Danielle Hurst is a young lady with a passion for high speeds behind the wheel of hot cars, and Nicky Milmine, manager of Speights and the Somerset Grocer shows us what is in her handbag. Elephants and Tuk Tuks, our adventure travel story from Maxine at House of Travel will whisk your mind across to the other side of the world to magical Phuket, to inspire the travel bug within. Living, food, travel, fashion, beauty, motoring, horoscopes and much more, December’s Envy is packed full of emotion, inspiration and advice that you are sure to love. However you are spending your Christmas, we wish that all of your holiday dreams come true, that your festive season is filled with joy, laughter and wonderful surprises, and for you and your family to have a safe journey. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, From Amanda and the team at Envy.

From left: Bill, Shelagh, Steve and Josie miss the snow, traditional roast dinner and their family and friends on Christmas, but are making the most of their new kiwi traditions as they get used to a summer BBQ Christmas.
Dreaming of a white Christmas Story: Amanda Niblett Photos: Kirsty Graham Growing up in New Zealand, we tend to have two schools of thought when it comes to Christmas. We know it’s most likely going to be radiantly hot, so we pop into our jandals and summery clothing for visiting the relatives, yet Christmas lunch and dinner is often a large traditional affair, influenced by Northern Hemisphere tradition. Santa still visits us in his large coat and wooly hat, and when we decorate festively, our houses are dotted with snow globes and snow frosting on our windows and Christmas tree. Although unusual, these northern hemisphere traditions practiced in the peak of our summer, we consider normal, so it is understandable when foreign families are highly confused in New Zealand at Christmas time.
Shelagh Field and her partner Steve Tallents moved to New Zealand with their two children Bill and Josie in September 2009, so this will be the second Christmas they experience away from their home country of England. Steve always had a passion to move to the magical land down under, but his dear elderly parents were too frail to consider leaving alone. Once they inevitably passed on, his world of opportunity re-opened, so he and Shelagh travelled to New Zealand on holiday to experience the dream first hand. Like a lot of our Northern Hemisphere cousins, they chose to experience our beautiful land from behind the wheel of a motorhome, and fell in love with our countries beauty and friendliness. They decided almost immediately that New Zealand was the place they wanted to call home, and began making arrangements to become New Zealand citizens. The immigration process was long, daunting and frustrating, but finally after 18 months of constant battles and proving that they were worthy citizens,

they were given the green light to venture towards the bottom of the earth. They have found Ashburton and New Zealand absolutely amazing, and they are all very comfortable in calling New Zealand home. Christmas time is a time that Shelagh and the family find the hardest, as it’s the time that they miss their family and dear friends the most. Bill and Josie miss playing in the snow at this time of year, instead adapting to water fights and swimming. In the UK, a traditional Christmas morning would consist of a full cooked breakfast, followed by opening Christmas presents, and then a day filled with visiting friends and family, eventually ending up at a large Christmas dinner. In New Zealand they have adapted their traditions, and now after opening a few presents, a lot of time is spent on the phone calling loved ones back in the UK. In Ashburton there is a heart warming group of immigrants that get together for a fun Christmas lunch, mixed with a little bit
of the traditions they are used to, and the new kiwi traditions that they are becoming accustomed to. “We are getting used to Strawberries and Cream and the good old kiwi BBQ instead of a traditional hot feast, but it would just be too much in the heat to handle, so we are happy with the new traditions” Shelagh said. The group has been a life saver for Shelagh and her family, as they have had to start over building friends and networks, but the local support in Ashburton and the new friends they have made has made Christmas time especially a fun and eventful day. “I can get used to the BBQ, but missing family and friends is hard to get over”. They have embraced the quirky differences in our Christmas’s so much, that they deliberately send Christmas cards with Santa on the beach back home to their friends and family in the UK, with Josie commenting “Mum, why do they have Christmas cards with snow on them in New Zealand when it’s summer?” I think that’s a tough question for anyone to answer, even a Kiwi!

High Summer with The Carpenters Daughter
Hello again... the heat has arrived and it is that time of the year that I have to bring out and put on my secret accessory....’Bloomer’s. I can hear you all...BLOOMERS...oh the high peels of laughter, or the giggles that are brewing... I know I know...very unsexy...BUT.... oh my they are my life saver! They allow me to be comfortable while wearing a dress. My secret weapon of comfort! Yes Girls... get on your bloomers so that you can wear your Summer dresses....you know I wouldn’t wear a dress because my thighs rubbed and killed me. It made my life unpleasant to say the least... So there you have my secret...for Summer! Black only...very good for Christmas day! Wear them as a short if you wish... you will want at least two pairs... look on our website to see and order them @www.tcd.co.nz keyword bloomer. Another thing that I find quite disturbing is... that YOU obsess about showing your arms. Be thankful is what I say...that you can wave goodbye, that you can hug your children and hang out your washing. I celebrate with women overcoming their obsessions, be it arms, bottoms or legs, God has made you this way...lets just dress it. Being a women we are mentoring up our younger women...obsessing about arm fat is not a good example... it is what happens after we have lived life...it is like wisdom... it comes with age. So this Summer lets go crazy! I already am... may spot you on my travels. Caroline

Jancraft Craft Boutique
Jan McMurtrie has poured her heart and soul into her unique craft boutique in Rolleston. As an artist and ex-florist, Jan is cut out to work in her industry. She’s spent more than 10 years making hand-painted, hand-embossed and hand-stamped cards, with the ability to barcode them for the overseas markets.
“I’m regularly accessing new products from all over the world so that I’ve constantly got new things for my customers to look at as they come in. I’ve also got a lot of product to put out in the shop prior to Christmas.”
About seven years ago she converted and opened part of her personal premises into Jancraft Craft Boutique and she hasn’t looked back since.
One thing Jan prides herself on is being able to provide her customers, many of which come from Ashburton, with “good, old fashioned, friendly, one on one service”.
She started off by setting up just one room to sell out of but, as the business has expanded, that room has become her year ‘round Christmas room and half of her premises is now dedicated solely to Jancraft. Set in a peaceful cottage garden, Jancraft is true to its boutique name. “I’m an ex-florist so I like everything window-dressed and very visual, I’ve got a big cottage-style garden that my customers absolutely love.” The shop offers keen scrap bookers and card makers all the supplies they could possibly need. “There’s a huge range of stickers and stick-on embellishments, about 30 colours of card for card-making, card liners, rubber stamps and more,” Jan says.
With her business expanding, Jan, who can be seen weekly with her shop on CTV, has decided to turn one third of her premises into Jancraft and rebuild her house for herself. The change will mean a huge upheaval for Jan, however, she is looking forward to it immensely and to offering her customers an even bigger and better one stop shop for scrap booking and card making requirements. “I’m really passionate about my shop and it’s just progressing and expanding more and more as time goes by to the point where I had to expand my premises. “As an artist and ex-florist, this is what I do best.”
Come and visit this very beautiful craft shop, in a tranquil garden setting. Bursting with a huge product base for scrapbooking/card making and general craft supplies for all your craft projects. Also the gorgeous Christmas shop, which is full of festive products, is a must see all year round.

Gold on Wisteria Story: Amanda Niblett Photos: Carmen Rooney When you close your eyes and think ‘Wisteria’, most of us are taken to a beautiful neighbourhood full of ‘Desperate Housewives’, gorgeous houses and loads of drama. In Ashburton, ‘Wisteria’ carries on the theme of beautiful houses, in the newly developed, pretty area called Wisteria Place in Tinwald. This month we are featuring a beautiful new home in Wisteria Place which is stunning in every sense of the word. This remarkable home was designed and built by its present owners, Craig Ingold and his fiancé Sam Cook.
The location of the house in Wisteria Place is set far enough back from the road, managing to retain that important degree of privacy that can so often be sacrificed in such a commanding position in a small culdesac.
The combination of exterior colours are striking, jet black hot-mix driveway, creamy light brown exterior rockcote, with a dark charcoal grey roof and front entrance doorway, makes for an eye catching, sophisticated first impression. The very unique addition to the entrance way is an effect called Rockpave, where a concrete slab is laid, a design inlaid with metal dividers is inserted, then a multitude of coloured, tiny stones is set on top and clear coated, to create a unique and visually appealing entrance.
Once inside, the entrance is spacious, with delicately striped feature wallpaper in grays to add texture and the impression of additional height. Directly in front of the entrance, is a sight you would not normally be greeted with, frosted glass panels and door with silver fittings. This is the very unique entrance into the spacious office. The transition from wallpapered entrance to frosted glass office gives a very modern and special introduction to the home. Large, charcoal gray tiles lead from the entrance into the main entertaining areas. The heart of this house is set in a spacious open plan gourmet kitchen and dining area, merging with a comfortable living area, which leads to a separated second living area, both living areas spilling out onto outdoor areas to appreciate different parts of the elaborate gardens. It is
apparent that Craig has carefully designed the house to deliver comfortable living and maximum enjoyment of its surroundings and also bring the outdoors in. The kitchen is a chefs dream. All the modern appliances and fittings which would be expected of a home of this quality, with a large double oven, featuring 5 gas hobs, and enough drawers and storage cupboards to store the kitchenware of a commercial kitchen! The cupboards feature pretty frosted glass panels, and the glass splash back is a groovy lime green, for just a splash of colour and fun into the stylish set up, and bringing out the greens in the beautiful peace lilly set in the kitchen. The kitchen flows into the large dining and living areas, which have been

accentuated with wooden furniture and blinds, creating a rich, warm ambience. The entire house’s window joinery has been completed in a charcoal aluminium, adding to the stylish feel of the interior. The joinery has been carried on to create double doors leading out to a special outdoor area, paved to resemble a checker board, and surrounded in luscious roses, a favourite of Craig’s fiancé Sam. Technologically advanced, this house has many special secrets, which will be of interest to anyone considering building their own home. The first is that all of the windows are thermally broken, which stops the transfer of heat and cold more effectively than traditional double glazing. The hallway features stylish brushed stainless steel lights, which are activated via a sensor when it is dark enough, so no need for light switches in the hallway. The spacious home is well equipped to support a large family, with 3 spare bedrooms, an additional office plus a master bedroom with walk in wardrobe, gorgeous swirled feature wall and ensuite. All the luxuries to keep the occupants very happy. Craig and Sam are due to marry in February 2011, so having the dream home already established will make their future family life comfortable and stress free.
The bathrooms are pure class. The charcoal tiles are matched leading up the side of the bath to give the impression of a bathing pool set into a dark surrounding, and Sam has accessorised in a passionate red for contrast and exuberance. The ensuite bathroom, while slightly smaller, is more luxurious, with his and her basins, plus large double shower in the same charcoal gray for utter indulgence to melt away the stresses of the day. The master bedroom and second living area both have charcoal aluminium joined double doors leading out to the large decked outdoor area, with outdoor dining furniture and BBQ, the perfect setting for entertaining on warm summer evenings. The grounds are pleasantly expansive, easy maintenance but elegantly designed. The landscaping was planned by landscape designer Aaron Bartlett, who designed the outline for the property. Craig and Sam went ahead and chose their own plants and did the hard yards in creating delicate serenity to the exterior. This house is a glorious reminder that you can have a large family home, luxurious and practical, without having to compromise on yard space, within suburbia, and not having to move out into the country.
Top: Ensuite off the master bedroom showing his and her basins and the large charcol tiled double shower. Middle: Craig Ingold. Bottom left:A feature outdoor area chequer board pavers and lush roses, from the main living room.

Garden Bling

Garden Expert
– pots and containers are a gardens best friend Growing plants in containers is a popular way to bring patios, outdoor rooms and the garden to life. Plants soften edges, add colour, vibrancy and in some cases perfume to areas where they are placed. Often referred to as the gardens accessories, cleverly placed pots and containers create a statement, just as a necklace or belt does when added to an outfit. Containers create focal points to enhance areas of the garden and draw your eye away from places you don’t wish to highlight. The list of plants that happily thrive in pots and containers is almost endless. From edible wonders such as dwarf fruit trees to lemons and limes and endless vegetable crops through to the flower power of roses, geraniums, petunias, poppies, dahlias and more. For fragrant options, try Gardenia, Star Jasmine, Rosemary or Daphne. Mix and matching different plant combinations is lots of fun and enables you to change your garden each season in a very cost effective way. Flowers can be planted under topiaries or fruit trees. Strawberries are fabulous with parsley in hanging baskets. New on the patio bling scene this season is Petunia Raspberry Blast, this colourful character smoothers itself in raspberry and pink coloured flowers all season. It’s a must for sunny outdoor living rooms all over the country. Generally most plants can adapt to life in a container providing they have enough room for their root zone, plenty of fertiliser, water and the correct sun or shade requirements. Be aware that containers restrict the root growth of plants; this has an affect on how tall or wide a plant can grow. Not only the leaves and flowers need room to grow but also the root zone. Roots are the engine room of the plant and need care and attention to reward you with colour, vibrancy, texture or fragrance.

Tips for container gardening success The lightweight mixture contains a full range of additives that can sustain plants for up to six months. Tui Outdoor Container Mix is ideal for growing plants like natives and grasses in large pots. All Purpose Potting Mixes will work but not as well. • Watering. Keep plants well watered, deep watering a few times a week is ideal. Light watering daily encourages the roots to stay near the surface, meaning the plant may not be well anchored in the pot and could blow over. When pots and containers dry out it’s very hard to get the moisture back into the soil. Always blend in rewetting granules like Saturaid. It enables the soil to hold onto moisture and make it available to the plants. • Feeding, potting mixes will need to be topped up with slow release fertiliser each season to ensure blooming results. Use a controlled release plant food like Osmocote
• Site. Place your pot/container carefully, your site will govern what plant types will happily thrive, choose plants that suit the situation. • Pot and containers vary in shape, size and colour. Ensure the container is big enough to house the plants you wish to grow. Haxnicks Patio Planters come in a range of colours and provide a very effective planting option. • Drainage, all pots and containers require drainage holes. Don’t be fooled and think if there are no holes it will save on watering. The roots may drown or root diseases will occur. • Plant choice is endless, have a bit of fun and add your own personality to your plant combinations. Bulbs, flowers and herbs make brilliant planting combinations with strong foliage plants. Change them as often as you like. • Potting mix, choose wisely; seek out Pot Power the crème de la crème of potting mixes. It is specifically designed for container gardening.
Reader Giveaway
Pots, Planters and Indoors every 6 months. For a quick fix “pick me up” of nutrients try Tui Eco-Fert. • Movement twist your pots and containers around frequently to ensure all sides get even amounts of light. • Phone a friend, with the holiday season looming, ask a friend or neighbour to pop in and water your pots and containers while you are away, your plants will thank you for it. • Re-potting: Check your potted plants seasonally. The only sure way to discover the state of the roots is to remove the plant from its container and examine them carefully. If fresh root tips are showing over the surface of the root ball or forming a thick spiral at the base, then re-potting into a larger container is necessary. Containers are versatile because they are portable and easy to maintain, a well planted and placed container will last for years with a little water and regular TLC.

The Superior Swiss Ball
Swiss balls are one of today’s top fitness tools - and for good reason! Using a Swiss ball will improve the strength of the abs and the lower back. Since the Swiss ball is unstable you have to constantly adjust your balance, which in turn will improve your balance, proprioception and flexibility. As an extra challenge you can use the exercise ball as a bench using free-weights to target those hard to reach stabilizer muscles. 1. Proper Alignment Using the Swiss ball during training will utilize many additional muscles to maintain stability and balance. Swiss balls are less stable than traditional fitness equipment, which can greatly improve your balance, coordination and core strength. The alignment of your body is also improved when proper balance is maintained. 2. Great Abs An abdominal crunch on the fitness ball has been scientifically proven to work your abs better than a regular crunch. For people working out to achieve great abs, the Swiss ball can definitely target the abdominal areas as the abs and back muscles are simultaneously worked.

3. Muscle Strength and Endurance The Swiss ball can improve muscle strength and endurance in all of the major muscle groups. Training with the stability ball can help in alleviating back pain and preventing pain in the future. As all the major muscle groups are exercised, tone, strength and endurance are improved as well as flexibility and balance. 4. Core Stability Swiss balls are less stable than traditional fitness equipment so you can also greatly improve your balance, coordination and core strength in your abs and back. The major muscles that help stabilize and support all of your body movements are made up of the back and the deep abdominal muscles. With the Swiss ball no matter how “deep” these muscles are, they are still exercised. This is something only the ball can guarantee. 5. Stretching The Swiss ball is a great tool for stretching exercises. With this, you can easily move into and move out of different stretching positions. Travel Expert
One to remember
Air Asia X has launched! With the launch of a new carrier, Air Asia X, into the NZ market we at House of Travel thought it was timely to tell you all about my family’s recent holiday to Phuket. My husband and I travelled to Phuket in 2009 and decided it would be an awesome holiday for our family so returned in 2010 with our teenagers. From the moment we arrived in Bangkok for our 2 night stay to lazying around the pool in Phuket for 10 nights this holiday was set to be one to remember. To get around Phuket the only way to travel is by their local Tuk Tuk (taxis). Cheap and just everywhere you turn your head. While out shopping one day we got caught in a heavy downpour of rain, our daughter stood under the shelter of a local stall and not even that loudly said we really need a Tuk Tuk. Almost instantly a Tuk Tuk was right beside us with the local Thai Driver saying “where you want to go”. In we climbed and headed back to our hotel. Truly service with a smile!
Night life in Patong along Bangla Road is interesting! The road is closed to traffic at night and is a constant stream of tourists and locals looking for a good time at one of the local bars. To sit in one of these bars sipping on a local ale and watch the world go by is an experience you will never forget! Plus you get the opportunity meet locals and fellow travellers and exchange tips about shopping and all the best places to eat and visit. A great way to spend a few hours. Eating out is so affordable and the variety is unbelieveable. From Seafood to the Street Carts selling banana pancakes all is cheap and very tasty. We found a stall selling Spare Ribs just off Bangla Road and they were incredibly tasty. We returned several nights to this stall and the local Thai people running the stall would remember us and we were always given the very best of service. One night we hired a Tuk Tuk and headed across to Phuket Town (about 45 minutes away) for some shopping at the local market and dinner that night. This proved to be our cheapest meal at a local restaurant for a total of NZ$25.00 for all 4 of us including a $5.00 tip to the local Thai lady. Amazing food and even more amazing look on the Thai ladies face when our daughter handed her 100Thai Baht (approxNZ$5.00) as a tip. We had obviously made her night and she made ours with your amazing smile.
Shopping is an experience that will not be forgotten either. From the street stalls selling everything from T-Shirts, Shorts, Handbags and DVD’s to the tailors able to make dress shirts, suits and dresses in just 3 days it just never ceased to amaze us. Our visits to a local Tailor proved a very pleasant shopping experience. A visit to a traditional Thai Massage Shop is a must when you visit Phuket. Foot Massage, Pedicures and Manicures along with traditional Thai Massages are all very affordable. The traditional Thai Massage involves lots of stretching and deep tissue massage while Foot Massages cost around 300-400 Baht or $15-$20 NZD for 40 minutes). Of course all the hotels have fabulous Health Spas and if you are after something a bit more luxurious with soothing oil massages and special treatments you need to check out the Heath Spa at your hotel. With our teenages keen to ride an Elephant we did a half day Elephant Trek. Our 4WD Jeep picked us up from our hotel to take us to Siam Safari Elephant Camp. Here we learnt about the camp conservation project and about their training methods before boarding an elephant and trekking the hillside which offered some fantastic views along the way. A day trip to Phi Phi Island was a great opportunity to discover the magical landscape of Maya Bay where the movie
The Beach was filmed and swim and snorkel around Phi Leh Cove. The day included lunch at a beachside restaurant at Khai Nai Island. The snorkelling was pretty good with lots of species of fish to view. Patong Beach is the best swimming beach in Phuket however don’t expect to have a peaceful lie on the beach and read your book! From the moment you step onto the sand a hawker will haggle with you to pay him money to sit on his deck chair, another hawker will come along to sell you bottled water or an icecream and then a local stall holder will be next in line to haggle with you to buy another T-Shirt or another DVD! All this is part of the fun and if you are polite to them they will normally be polite back! Eventually after you have said “no thank you” 100 times they give up! If you want to you can hire jetskis or go up in a parasail behind a speed boat. We watched several people on these and besides the odd scary time everyone seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves. The accommodation options in Phuket are many and at House of Travel we spend time talking with you to establish exactly what you are after and book the hotel that best suits your needs. From 3 Star to 5 Star Resorts we have something for everyone. We just loved Phuket and know we will return again. A fantastic place for a holiday and with Air Asia X available from April 2011 a most definitely an affordable option.

Best dressed
lollipops Tessa Benham
In my column last month we discovered that 12B is out as the standard bra size and has been replaced with a 14C/D, and expanding fast with some UK reports suggesting 12F is becoming the new base size. So with designers reacting to this body tend, bras are now becoming available up to a J cup as a new standard in stores. And best of all brands are recognising that bigger boobs don’t always mean a bigger body. Tiny back sizes of 6-12 with burgeoning busts are finally being catered for. So how to dress these skinny yet blooming bodies?
Well we established last month that a professional bra fitting will help put your boobs in the correct, most comfortable and best looking shape for you frame. Quite possibly you will need to accept your bra size moving up the alphabet, as the correct size is discovered. Face the fear ladies and accept your new size. Now that they’re out there, we need to address how we are dressing to get around these obstacles. This doesn’t have to mean binding or flattening them to get a great wardrobe working for you (and them). Now you could choose to embrace what Trinny and Susannah term “the Lollipop figure - big tits, slight waist, slim hips, long legs. The majority of celebrities fall into this category. Think Scarlett Johansson, with her tiny frame and well endowed chest, who loves to show off her figure in slinky knits and tiny singlets. Low we are not all that brave, want all that attention, and, um, what about the office! For classic dressing, simple, one colour outfits do wonders in disguising big busts. Play with the styling to add interest, raise the neckline and show off your legs as the focus to really get this working. Small details like gathering under the bust, at the neckline, or down the centre front will add shape if desired. Next, play with proportion, slim line your bottom half with tailored, slim fit pants or shorts, then play with volume on the top, making sure to cinch the waist or tuck in to avoid looking rounded. Top this look off with a latest fashion look, the draped cardigan. If your commuting to the office, a party or event, and want to temporarily shade your bust, but the weathers too hot for a jacket, try playing with a scarf loosely tied around your neck, a great way to provide modesty in style. Finally, what are the print rules? They are everywhere this summer. Tight fit = small patterns, loose fit = large patterns, got it? Yes, large prints are ok!, but use them wisely or yes they can make you appear bigger than you really are. Try framing prints with large borders at the neckline to rein large shapes in. Celebrities seem to really love breaking fashion rules when it comes to dressing big boobs, we see it all the time in the magazines, and tv shows. Just remember an extra centimetre or two is all it takes to take a strapless or plunging dress from dodgy to truly glamorous, and tailoring is worth every penny. Go out there and work what you’ve got!

Envious Weddings
Recipes of the month Congratulations to last months winner Y Weaver Ashburton
The gorgeous Tessa Benham, one of our wonderful monthly Envy writers, was married to the handsome Rowan Dawson, at her parents estate in Paengaroa with 100 wedding guests attending. They were married on the 18th September, and It was a tumultuous day weather wise, as they were successfully married right in the eye of the storm. The theme was radiantly colourful with the bridesmaids wearing traditional Indian attire.

Ingredients Makes 9 1/2 cup warm milk 1 Tablespoon sugar 2 1/2 teaspoons instant yeast 2 cups flour 1 Tablespoon extra sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 large egg lightly beaten 2 Tablespoons butter melted 1 cup Barker’s Classic Fruit Mince Method Combine the milk, 1 Tablespoon sugar and the yeast in a small bowl. Set aside for 5 minutes or until frothy. Combine the flour 1 Tablespoon extra sugar and salt in a large bowl; make a well in the centre. Pour the yeast mixture and the egg into the well and add the melted butter. Stir until just combined. Place on a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes or until the dough is smooth. Place the dough into a lightly greased large bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside in a warm place for 1 hour or until the dough doubles in size. Line a 20cm round cake tin with baking paper. Roll out the dough to a 20cm x 30cm rectangle. Spread the classic fruit mince over the dough evenly. Roll up tightly from the longer side. Cut the roll into 9 even slices and place them into the prepared tin. Cover and leave to rise until the dough has doubled in size. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 180 C. Once the dough has risen, bake the scrolls in the preheated oven for 25 – 30 minutes, or until they are golden brown. Serve warm.

Hot hair for the
holiday season Story: Amanda Niblett From a flirty fringe for your Christmas party, to a seductive up-do for New Years, It’s always fun to experiment and alternate the look of your hair, and what better excuse than party season! When it comes to the holidays, there are plenty of parties and occasions to attend, so holiday hairstyles become an important part to looking fantastic. Depending on the event and attire, some hairstyles work better than others. For example a simple, sleek hairstyle would work great for an office Christmas party, but for a New Year’s party, flowing waves can be more feminine and flirty.
The Romantic Curl Curls are back in vogue and were all over the spring/summer catwalks. Adapt the style to your hair with some soft, pretty waves. Sexy curls and waves are undoubtedly a great party look. They are sexy and sassy and can be adapted to suit almost any occasion. Simply take section of hair, place between the plates of a narrow flat iron and turn the appliance 180 degrees before running down the hair, curling around in the same way as a piece of ribbon. For more defined curls, use rollers or tongs small to medium size sections of hair and glam up with glitzy clips and accessories. Pump up the volume! If you thought the oversized clutch was the accessory of the season, think again. It’s the big bouffant styles rocking the red carpet and catwalk that are making a big impact on the party circuit! Take a large section of hair from the back of the crown, gently back-comb the roots, spritzing with hairspray. Once you have the right body, smooth over the back-combed area. Accessorize! With the holiday season in full swing, it’s a great idea to add a festive flair to your tresses with super cute hair accessories! From grown-up sparkly rhinestone barrettes to head-turning headbands, hair ornaments will take your hair from flat to festive in seconds! The right accessory is sometimes all you need to go from plain to pretty. This holiday season, large shiny hair ornaments bring back an old-world elegance. Golden girl Nicole Kidman uplifted the humble headband by wearing one to the Oscars. These huge time-savers require no hairstyling at all. Bands of classic pearls, sparkly rhinestones or glittery jewels are just the thing for dressy cocktail parties. And simpler gold or silver bands can take you straight from the office to a night out on the town. Holiday Hair Tip Invest in a good quality shine serum or shine mist as holiday hair simply won’t work without a healthy boost of shine! Add just enough to top up your gloss, but be careful to add gradually as you can easily end up with an oily mess!

What women want Story: Amanda Niblett As a friend of someone who is in an unhappy relationship, sometimes you feel helpless in what support and advice you can give them. There may not be a specific reason for their unhappiness, but you know that their marriage is falling apart, but the thought of divorce often seems so overwhelming that the option is dismissed, no matter how unhappy they remain. What will we do with the house and contents? How will it affect the children? Maybe it’s just a rough patch and we will get through it? What if this is the best I will ever get? The statistics in separation and divorce rates show there are a lot of unhappy couples out there, wanting more out of their relationships and life.
Marriage, while it can be a lifetime of bliss for some couples, is certainly not always the answer for happiness. The majority of us may never live the ‘happy every after’ being more likely to get divorced (at least once). A recent report from the ‘Office for National Statistics’ in the UK predicts that only 10% may make their 60th Wedding Anniversary. 45% of all marriages will end in divorce and the remaining 45% in death of a partner. If your marriage survives 10 years then around 31% still stand a chance of ending in divorce, and if you’re lucky enough to reach the 20 year mark the chances of divorce drop to around 15%. Growing up as a wee girl, most will dream of a gorgeous sparkling wedding with our very own Prince Charming. After the long awaited kiss and being carried over the threshold in the arms of our loved one, all we are told of after that is “and they lived happily ever after”. But it’s not always happy, and many of us are unprepared with what we may face in the years to come. For those in an unhappy marriage, the first day of their wedded marriage could be described as an empty paddock, full of potential. As the marriage continues, both parties are out in the paddock, tending to it, pulling weeds and planting flowers for each other. As the wedded bliss fades, flowers still continue to be planted, but more weeds grow with no attention to them. Eventually no more flowers are planted, because neither can see the point, and the weeds that have grown rapidly have taken over. From here, there are 2 options. Work hard together to eradicate the weeds, which can be described as dishonesty, criticism and lack of communication and work on planting flowers for each other again, remembering and cherishing the love, or if the weeds are too stubborn and the flowers no longer are appealing, then the paddock is abandoned. As women are fighting to be recognized as equals with our male counterparts, our attitudes are strengthening towards more independence. Many women realise that to be the ‘stay at home wife’ will one day be of great detriment if their husband were to leave, an unspoken fear that would lead to economic deprivation long term. Working is essential for women both in long term economic terms as well as emotional health. Was Jack Nicholson right in his assessment of marriage in the movie ‘The Three Witches of Eastwick’ when he said “There are three things that make a woman bloom” he said “Death, Divorce or Desertion”. Marriage stifles a woman, sucks all the life from her.” Well maybe modern marriage exhausts her. The fear of many considering separation or divorce is “what if I regret my choice?” The fear that once we take the plunge back into independence, solitude and single life, we will regret our decision to leave. With an increasing percentage of divorce applications coming from women, it seems that women are taking the plunge to get exactly what they want from their lives. Whether or not they end up finding that special something that makes them happy, can only be speculated on. Any way you look at the situation, divorce and separation is difficult on all parties concerned, as well as their families and friends. In today’s world there is no cause or need for any man or woman to remain in an unhealthy or unhappy relationship, but there should be time taken to evaluate what is causing unhappiness in the relationship. While divorce is more socially accepted, it is always advisable to explore the options of medical advice and counseling to establish the unhappiness before drastic measures are taken. Either way, no matter what eventuates for us, there is always hope for a better life. Whether you stay in your relationship and work towards making it work, or if you file for separation, you won’t immediately forget the hurt or unhappiness. But believe in yourself that you are someone of worth, really believe it, acknowledge that you can be the person you always wanted to be, set your sights on your ambitions, work towards fulfilling your dreams, and your happiness will follow. This is a new beginning for you. A chance to really prove to yourself that you can do it. Know what you want - be honest with yourself in understanding what you have to do to get what you want - and then let nothing stand in your way until you get precisely what you want. It can be yours, but you have to make it all happen, whatever path you choose.

Your stars,
23
with Madame Latanya... December 2010
Aries Mar 21 - Apr 19 It appears to be all systems go within your professional life as you focus all your energy into transforming your job into something that resembles a career. You will also notice an increase in your sexual energy during the end of December, but at given times it could be expressed abruptly, so make an effort to be more controlled and you will reap the rewards. From December 31st through January 8th, Venus is teaming up with Jupiter and Uranus to bring more financial, psychological, and/or romantic activities into your life.
Cancer June 21 - July 22 December 20th - December 22nd is a good time to enjoy yourself intensely and become aware of each instant, since true love is bound to the full awareness of each act, each gesture, each feeling and each thought. There’s more to life than meets the eye and now you’re starting to realise that you can take things further than you may have thought imaginable. From December 31st through January 8th, Venus is teaming up with Jupiter and Uranus to bring more fun and adventure into your life. The idea is for you to open your mind, broaden your horizons, learn something new, and/or explore the world around you and have some fun while doing so.
Libra Sept 23 - Oct 22 Briefly, you now need, above all, stability, emotional security, positive changes of your character, psychological understanding with your mate, as well as living your emotions and sensuous experiences with great content. Now that Venus, your planetary ruler has returned back to her normal course of action, you’ll feel as though you can resume living your life as usual. All the intensity within your closest relationships over the last few months will now seem to tone down, and any misunderstandings you may have had will clear up somehow solidifying your bonds.
Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19
You’re not the type to jump into something with both feet but you’ll have a really good feeling about the direction your life is headed right now – give or take a few bumps here or there. For those in a relationship, if distrust exists or one is concealing certain aspects from the other, it is very difficult to reach real ecstasy and happiness. From December 24th through the 28th, the sun passes over Pluto. This will bring depth and meaning into your life.
Taurus Apr 20 - May 20 You’ll know who to count on when its time to take action and with the New Moon on the 5th, you’ll feel ready to take activate your plans with confidence that you won’t be let down. You’ll be taking a big leap of faith but also have the courage that someone has got your back. Especially towards the end of the month when your plans for the new year take an unexpected turn for the better. Don’t forget that in love relationships there has to be revitalization from day to day that should not be neglected, but is advisable to maintain continual attention and concentration.
Leo July 23 - Aug 22 This astrological aspect generates great personal energy and magnetism. If you control this wealth of energy, you will be able establish a creative outlet and events will not go out of hand. Your love life and career are doing rather well, but you do have some moments when things are just nuts. December 5th hosts a new moon in your personal pleasure, romance, and happiness sector. This is an excellent time for romantic evenings with your lover. It is also an excellent time for launching “happiness” based businesses and for beginning work on projects that would bring more joy into your life. Saturn adds long-term positive effects to this new beginning in your personal pleasure and happiness sector.
Scorpio
Oct 23 - Nov 21
You cannot afford to be as generous as you would like to be this year. However, you have a lot of love and fun to share over the holiday season. You are an awesome bargain hunter, a persuasive salesman, and a beloved member of your community. You will make it all work out just fine. Don’t you always? Some dysfunctional family dynamics could get you to verbalize your real opinion of people, but you are ready to forgive and forget soon enough. You now need a very strong and deep affectionate interrelationship with your companion.
Aquarius
Jan 20 - Feb 18
You are something like a caterpillar in its cocoon transitioning into a butterfly. Do not be surprised if you start making big changes in your life over the next two or three months because of the psychological self-evaluations you are undergoing now. Your reluctance could be about missing opportunities or having to field too many at the same time but a decision must be made. An intense Full Moon on the 21st is likely to shed some light on the situation, giving you all the information you need to come to a conclusion. While you may not have to act on it straight away, at least you’ll be left with piece of mind.
Gemini May 21 - June 20 Proving yourself will be of the utmost importance to you but no matter how stressful it may get, it’s not just the quality of your work that you’ll want to be noticed for. From December 24th through the 28th, the sun passes over Pluto. They are travelling together through your trust and sharing sector. This is a passionate energy for romantic and financial activities. Pluto rules over this area of the zodiac, so he is especially power here and is doing his best to help you with your love life and your financial goals.
Virgo
Aug 23 - Sept 22 Your private life, partnerships, and playtime activities have your attention this month. You have a lot happening in your home. Real estate deals, roommates, parents, retirement, houseguests, home-improvements, holiday decorating, etc seem to be causing all kinds of excitement. At one point, your spouse is not too happy about all of the drama or an expartner is trying to cause trouble. However, you work through it. You probably spend too much over the holidays, but you are not sorry that you focused so much of your time and energy on creating a fun and happy atmosphere for everyone.
Sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21 We live in extremely busy times but no matter how much you feel like you were built to keep up with the rat race, there has to be a point when you stop running around like a hamster in a wheel. You’ve done the work, now its time to start producing the results. Avoid superior or arrogant attitudes in your love relationship and practice sincere communication every day. From December 31st through January 8th, Venus is teaming up with Jupiter and Uranus to bring more peace and harmony into your private life.
Pisces
Feb 19 - March 20 Your career and social life are both booming with all kinds of excitement this month. When the New Moon illuminates your profile on the 5th, you’ll be more than prepared to launch into the charm offensive for all you’re worth as your levels of confidence reach an all time high. Your personal security will attract the opposite sex, and there is a possibility of someone becoming interested in you. This harmonious astrological aspect from December 22nd to December 25th energizes your emotions, which causes you to be more direct and spontaneous in your sentimental relationships. Saturn adds positive long-term financial effects to this new beginning in your career or public life.
