Hello Envy readers and welcome to our November Edition! Who can believe it’s only 7 weeks until Christmas? For those of you who have been organised throughout the year, buying gifts at opportune ‘Sale’ times, I applaud you! For those of us who tend to leave things until the last minute, we have some gorgeous jewellery ideas to tempt you on Page 12. Stocking filler or something special to last an eternity, you decide! The days are now longer, lighter and warmer, making them perfect for squeezing in a little summer exercise in the placid evenings, in an attempt to shed a little of our ‘winter coat’ that has crept on during our time of hibernation. If you start now, then you will be able to get in shape for the swimwear season the right way, by making exercise fun and working with you rather than against you. This will avoid the nasty crash diet in an attempt to ditch the added kilos the week before your summer holiday. Page 10 has some ideas on how you can gradually increase more active fun into the summer evenings, to have you slimming without even really trying. Sunny skies and balmy days are simply irresistible and make a stunning backdrop for a romantic occasion, so if you have a message of love or thank you, check out our Sweet Sentiments on Page 22, the messages sent in by our readers this month were just gorgeous. Let the summer season inspire you, whether it’s sand between your toes, flowers in bloom or vibrant summery colours. It is the season for flowing fabrics, gorgeous parasols and refreshing drinks. Barkers have given us a refreshing summer
recipe for you all to try, along with a great Christmas giveaway on Page 22. From the buzzing metropolis of London to the lazy meandering of Southern France, Europe is the ultimate holiday destination for lovers of history, culture, romance and food. Our new travel page starts the adventures in the gorgeous cities of Paris, Rome and London, so be inspired by Page 6, and you might find yourself saying Oui Oui! If travelling to the other side of the world is slightly out of the budget in the immediate future, you could consider bringing that culture into your home here in New Zealand. Pages 4-5 share the story of an Ashburton family who have opened up their home and hearts to an exchange student from Chile. By sharing their Kiwiana, they received more in return than they could have ever imagined. Full of fun, fashion and food, we hope you will enjoy this month’s edition of Envy on a warm, relaxing afternoon in stunning Mid-Canterbury. Stay gorgeous, Amanda and the team at Envy.

Fashion tips with The Carpenters Daughter
Fresh from showing at Fashion Week 2010 Caroline Marr has some key tips to help you get it all together for Summer 2010. A busy Fashionista always have lots of events to attend in November and December with parties and weddings galore. Her wardrobe needs to be versatile to go from work to drinks then out on the town...what better than the layering style of TCD. The way we layer together, outfits from key pieces needed in any wardrobe, means many different looks can be achieved leaving our Fashionista’s feeling like they are never seen in the same outfit twice. Help is always at hand with your wardrobes stylists at TCD. First Impressions always count girls! I find that a smile gets us along way... it is the beginning of what others see and is the lasting impression they remember. Because we TCD girls are bigger (we take up more space) we need to dress the space we take up. The TCD stylists have a trained eye, when
you walk in the door they know what style would look good on you. If you allow them to undress and re dress you in what their first vision for you would be...you would be amazed...what is even more amazing is that it won’t cost you anything unless you would like to take it home... this in store service is a great way to recreate a NEW YOU! Just having an open mind to being dressed by the TCD stylists can change your world! Truly.... don’t tell them what you like and don’t like...just allow them to dress you! BIG NEWS!!! POP UP store... temporary retail manifestations. A new concept of testing the retail market, and getting consumers attention. The Carpenters Daughter has recognised this niche in the new trend of retailing and are bringing this concept to Ashburton this month. Email us your address or join us on facebook to know when.... An infusion of Chile creates a spicy exchange Story: Amanda Niblett Photos: Carmen Rooney The plane touches down in Christchurch, and Karen Alvear Luengo, an exchange student from Chile realises her adventures in New Zealand are just about to start. She doesn’t know too much about New Zealand, other than what she has researched on the internet, and gets off the plane with nervous apprehension. As she takes her first footsteps in this tiny country down the bottom of the earth, her host family waits excitedly in the airport to meet their new host daughter. Tara and Steve Hollings will be her host parents, and William and Georgia-Rose her host brother and sister for the next 10 months. Karen is the first student they have hosted, so this is a new and exciting experience for everyone.
As they walk across the carpark, there is nervous silence between everyone. Where exactly do you start, when there is so much to say? Karen breaks the silence by saying “There aren’t many ducks in New Zealand”...the family are a bit confused...”ducks?”...”quack quack?”. Karen gives them a confused look, clearly she didn’t mean ducks. It took a while before someone clicked. “Dogs?” “Woof Woof?”, “Yes! Woof Woof!” The mystery was solved, everyone was laughing and the family adventure had begun. When you welcome an international exchange student into your home, you make a global impact simply by sharing your New Zealand. Tara and Steve have experienced this first hand since Karen has joined their lives. They hadn’t thought about hosting a student, until they saw the article in the Guardian at the start of the year, desperately needing host families. They were put in contact with Annie Lees, and everything moved like clockwork from there. Like most people considering hosting someone new into their house, initially they went through the negatives and apprehensions that everyone would consider, even the little things like having to grab a dressing gown every time you had to move somewhere in the house, but after some more thought, the negatives melted away, and the positives over-ruled their hearts. Since Karen arrived, all of their initial concerns disappeared and only positives have emerged from their hosting experience. It has given them the ability
to share their culture, while experiencing and welcoming Karen’s culture into their lives and their children’s lives. William and Georgia-Rose treat Karen like an older sister, and have even picked up a few bits and pieces of Spanish. Initially they were a bit shy, but now there’s no limit to the giggling, fun and games or the sibling teasing that happens between them all. It has introduced the joy of having a new family member to love, and Karen feels like part of the family. Because Karen has an excellent grasp of English, there haven’t been too many language barrier issues, just giggling over the pronunciation of words due to the differing accents. Tara and Steve believe that hosting Karen has brought their own family even closer together. By showing Karen as much of New Zealand as possible during her 10 months, the family have increased the activities they have done together, and every trip is like a bonding experience. Their advice to anyone considering hosting an exchange student is – JUST DO IT! “It’s an amazing experience that has been full of so much reward for our family” Tara said. With tragedies in Chile recently like the earthquake and trapped miners, it has given Tara and Steve a feeling of closeness with Karen’s home country. Karen thought she was blessed to have escaped the Chile earthquake – which occurred while she was in New Zealand, but then in a strange twist of fate still experienced our own one. With technology, keeping in touch with her home country is easy for Karen. She
uses Skype and Facebook to keep in touch regularly with friends and family, and that helps ease any feelings of homesickness. Tara and Steve hope to keep in contact with Karen after she returns to Chile, and are considering hosting her younger brother David if he decides to travel to New Zealand on exchange in a few years. They are also planning a family trip to Chile in a few years, to be able to experience the culture that they have had a taste of through Karen. This experience has been life changing for the whole family. They have enjoyed a new family favourite cuisine of Empanadas’, which they plan to cook on the 18th of September each year to celebrate ‘Chile Day’. By hosting Karen, they have experienced the rewarding feeling of giving back to the community while making a difference in the world. Sharing a new culture with their children, while growing closer as a family travelling New Zealand, has been more rewarding than they could have ever imagined. “Steve, Tara , William y Georgia Rose: gracias por su compañía en Nueva Zelanda , me divertí y aprendí mucho con ustedes . Fue una experiencia genial !Los llevare en mi corazón por siempre”. “Thank you Steve, Tara, William and Georgia Rose for my experience in New Zealand. I have had so much fun and learnt so much from you. New Zealand has been a wonderful experience that I will treasure forever”.

Fall in love with Europe Above: Explore the brutal history of the Colosseum in Rome. Left: Experience the excitement of London. Below: Fall in love with art at the Louvre in Paris.
The UK & Europe offers just about the perfect combination of history, culture and landscapes. There are stunning walking trails, unparalleled shopping, delectable food and a diversity of people and scenery that few other places on the planet can match. Europe can be as luxurious as you wish or as affordable as you need. It can offer you places of outstanding natural beauty, sites that will move you deeply with their tragic history, and fiestas and festivals that brim with life and joie de vivre. So if you think you have already seen all that Europe has to offer, think again. That’s the magic of this amazing place, there is always something new to uncover.
Paris What other city can conjure up romance, elegance and chic sophistication like Paris? This is a city to savour – whether from up high among the lattice work of the Eiffel Tower or from a pavement café with a glass of Bordeaux in hand. The treasures of the Louvre, the glories of Notre Dame Cathedral, the Arc de Triomphe and the elegant Champs Elysées – all are essential Paris. But be prepared to detour – watch a game of boules in the Jardin de Luxembourg, or dither between a rich, custardy millefeuille and a flaky, buttery pain au chocolat at a nearby pâtisserie. You can choose to stay in the heart of Paris known as the Opera District, in the Latin Quarter on the Left Bank very close to Notre Dame and an eclectic mix of ethnic restaurants, or in the artistic area known as Montmartre, where you can experience the dinner and dance show Moulin Rouge. Watch artists at work near the marble confection that is Sacré-Coeur Basilica, and marvel at the Impressionist masterpieces in the Musée d’Orsay – only the French could transform a railway station into a temple of art. Keep walking and when you can’t take a step more, people-watch in a side walk café and then when the sun sets, fall in love with Paris all over again, as its majestic architecture bathes in the spotlights.
London London – it’s one of the world’s truly great cities. Your first visit will be mind-blowing but what’s great about London is that it is a city you can explore time and time again and always find something startlingly new or amazingly historic. Where to start in a city with an incredible history dating back thousands of years, some of the most iconic attractions on earth and over 30,000 shops? Maybe at Westminster Abbey where every British king or queen has been crowned since 1066, or strolling the aisles of that ultimate shopping destination Harrods. Take a ride on the breathtaking London Eye, the world’s largest observation wheel; or cruise the Thames River to Greenwich and step inside a quintessential Gastro Pub like The Union – the food is simple, classic British, and all locally sourced. London never sleeps so splash out on dinner in a Michelin-starred restaurant or dip into a myriad of cuisines from Caribbean to North African. A smorgasbord of clubs, concerts and spectacular shows await!

Rome Rome - known as the ‘Eternal City’, this is a place where the past and present merge into one. An espresso shot at breakfast before treading the nearly 2000-year-old steps in the Colosseum, a slice of gourmet pizza served among jostling, exquisitely dressed Romans, a gelato in delectable Piazza Navona, ravioli for dinner near the Spanish Steps: the Romans love to eat and drink, so when in Rome… From the days of the great Roman Empire and its ultimate collapse, to becoming the central heart of the Christian world where famous artists and architects flocked to work, this is a city not to be missed! With nearly 3000 years of history literally under your feet there is so much to discover in Rome, and in the world’s tiniest state that lies within it: the Vatican City. Follow in the ghostly sandalled footsteps of a Roman senator through the Forum or tread the marble floors in the wake of the Popes in St Peter’s Basilica. Rome is certainly a city of big sights but dive behind the scenes even a few steps off the tourist trail and you’ll find another side of Rome: a black-clad Italian ‘mamma’ hanging out the washing, or children running home with the daily bread fresh from the bakery. Just watch out for that distinctive buzz - an approaching Vespa!

Jancraft Craft Boutique
Jan McMurtrie has poured her heart and soul into her unique craft boutique in Rolleston. As an artist and ex-florist, Jan is cut out to work in her industry. She’s spent more than 10 years making hand-painted, hand-embossed and hand-stamped cards, with the ability to barcode them for the overseas markets.
“I’m regularly accessing new products from all over the world so that I’ve constantly got new things for my customers to look at as they come in. I’ve also got a lot of product to put out in the shop prior to Christmas.”
About seven years ago she converted and opened part of her personal premises into Jancraft Craft Boutique and she hasn’t looked back since.
One thing Jan prides herself on is being able to provide her customers, many of which come from Ashburton, with “good, old fashioned, friendly, one on one service”.
She started off by setting up just one room to sell out of but, as the business has expanded, that room has become her year ‘round Christmas room and half of her premises is now dedicated solely to Jancraft. Set in a peaceful cottage garden, Jancraft is true to its boutique name. “I’m an ex-florist so I like everything window-dressed and very visual, I’ve got a big cottage-style garden that my customers absolutely love.” The shop offers keen scrap bookers and card makers all the supplies they could possibly need. “There’s a huge range of stickers and stick-on embellishments, about 30 colours of card for card-making, card liners, rubber stamps and more,” Jan says.
With her business expanding, Jan, who can be seen weekly with her shop on CTV, has decided to turn one third of her premises into Jancraft and rebuild her house for herself. The change will mean a huge upheaval for Jan, however, she is looking forward to it immensely and to offering her customers an even bigger and better one stop shop for scrap booking and card making requirements. “I’m really passionate about my shop and it’s just progressing and expanding more and more as time goes by to the point where I had to expand my premises. “As an artist and ex-florist, this is what I do best.”
Come and visit this very beautiful craft shop, in a tranquil garden setting. Bursting with a huge product base for scrapbooking/card making and general craft supplies for all your craft projects. Also the gorgeous Christmas shop, which is full of festive products, is a must see all year round.
Hours: Open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm and closed Sunday and Monday.

Country moves to town Story: Amanda Niblett Photos: Carmen Rooney Moving from a large home in the country, into a new subdivision in town can be a daunting experience. How will we still have privacy? Where will we find a house large enough to store all of our belongings? After many months of looking at houses and lifestyle blocks on the market for sale, Margaret and Michael Rushton found their perfect answer in an already designed plan from AB Construction. Margaret and Michael lived in rural Mid-Canterbury with stunning views of Mt Somers and Mt Hutt, once their three children were teenagers, it was time for the family to simplify their lifestyle, cut down on daily travel and move into town. They wanted to keep some of the elements of country living, but couldn’t find anything on the market that matched what they wanted.
They decided to build new, once they discovered the section in Westpark Close. The section promised the privacy they were after, with very little road noise and no view from the street into their entertaining areas, and the plans accommodated the large family home they were looking for, with room for a 3 car garage plus additional parking. With the section, plans and building permit all ready to go immediately, plus the ability to change some detail on the plan, this was the perfect solution. Unlike most people that build from scratch, Margaret and Michael found the entire experience stress free, with no hold ups or hiccups along the way. The builder and project manager (Cedric & Mandy from AB Construction) kept in touch with them every step of the way, so they always felt informed and nothing was a surprise. The ambitious timeline of only 5 months was set, but it was matched, with windows being cleaned and the garage being swept out whilst they moved in. The plans already came with high quality fittings chosen, with re-sale value in mind, so Margaret and Michael left the majority of these decisions to the builders, happy in trusting their style and knowledge. The entrance way is very light and spacious, and the halls are surprisingly wide and roomy. Ample storage has been incorporated, meaning overall the space has been used very cleverly and effectively. Inside the home, my first impression of the house was space that opens to space that opens to space! It’s not often in a pre-designed home that you feel such spaciousness, with a lot of modern homes with smaller bedrooms and hallways to fit on smaller sections. However this 310sqm house certainly bucks that trend. All of the bedrooms are spacious double bedrooms, plus there is a 5th room off the entrance hall which is used as an office. The family
bathroom is light and airy includes a full size bath, white wall and black floor tiles, with splashes of red added in the furnishings. This bathroom has a door to the guest bedroom, an extra which was requested by the Rushtons. The master bedroom is also spacious, and with a matching black and white ensuite, a large walk in wardrobe and french doors that open to the paved area on the way to the Spa. They designed their own kitchen to be incorporated in the space allocated, with Margaret definite that she wanted a large clear workspace bench in the centre. It is a simple and workable kitchen. The metal powder coated burgundy splashback was their own idea, a move away from glass. The living areas have 2 different feels, one modern with sleek new furniture, and one with a warm country feeling. They were able to incorporate their country furniture in this room, and along with the fireplace, it has created a cosy sanctuary. The dining room also hosts their 1940’s Oak extension table and chairs, and elegant sideboard. This large living space opens up through large aluminium bi-fold doors to the outdoor entertaining area, a part of the house used most frequently when weather permits of course. These bi-fold doors were one of the changes the Rushtons had made to the plan, and the open space they have created to the outdoors is impressive. The house was angled on the property to make the most of the afternoon sun, which pours into the living areas and keeps the outdoor entertaining area warm through to the evening. The outdoor area has a gorgeous and unique marble table, very different from most outdoor settings seen. It sits upon cut exposed aggregate concrete, which gives the area a rustic yet sophisticated feel, all covered with a smart Smoky Grey sail shade, which protects from the sun but still lets through filtered light.
Michael has built a private spa area outside using timber milled from the farm. It has been given a rustic country feel, embellished with old metal wool brands, shears and bale hook from the old shearing shed. The outside landscaping is simple and low maintenance, the plantings have all been Michael and Margaret’s own choice, and the combination of colours and textures are unique and varied. There are further adornments from the farm throughout the gardens, as well as landscaping rocks from Mt Hutt and other places they have visited to add the personal touch. The large brass ‘R’ at the entrance, both quirky and interesting, acquired from previous ‘Rosebank’ signage, but is perfect for greeting you to the Rushton household. The triple garaging was definitely a selling point of the house. It comfortably fits two cars, and Michael’s beloved toy, the hot and heavy Harley Davidson motorcycle. The garage also has room for a table tennis table and dart board, giving the kids some entertainment when they are home. What do you do when one of you wants a veggie garden but the other doesn’t? Build a 3 m x 1 m raised box garden and get on with it! Margaret and Michael reached this compromise with the clever veggie garden they built, making the most of the space at the back of the house. A great example of the kiwi can do attitude! The final nice touch to the home is that the couple enjoy local art and landscapes. Their favourite piece of art was commissioned by a friend, and takes pride of place above the fire in the country themed lounge area. The colour of the feature wall in that room was chosen to complement colours in the painting! This comfortable residence feels like ‘home’ and is a great inspiration that building from scratch still allows for everything you have ever wanted from your dream home, but can also be stress free.

Sizzling Summer Workout Tips It may be hard to believe with the snow still falling in some parts of the country, that summer - and with it bathing suit season - is just around the corner. When that reality sets in, it’s hard to not want to find the fastest and easiest way to get in shape. Turn your summer fun into opportunities for fitness From ballgames to backyard barbecues, the warm weather brings many activities that can lead to more eating and less exercise. Life is not a dress rehearsal, and for most of us, giving up a day of picnicking on the beach or a sunny morning on the golf course for the dank artificial cool of the local health club, presents no real choice. So go ahead, bring the kids to the park, spend the
weekend at the shore, do whatever it is your heart desires while the sun sits high in the sky. Exercise and summer fun can go hand and hand -- achieving a sort-of two bird with one stone effect. And by following a few simple suggestions, you can turn your day at the shore into fun and fitness. Play, don’t lay Get off that beach blanket and join in the fun -- play some volleyball, toss around a frisbee, go for a swim, or bodysurf. Just don’t lie there for four hours roasting in the sun. If picnicking with friends or family members, organize or join in a softball game, play horseshoes, folf (frisbee golf) or take a hike in the woods. Get in the middle of whatever happens to be going on. Get wet Enjoy your fun time in the sun by splashing in the pool. Instead of just sitting poolside in the lounge chair sipping iced tea, jump on in and swim laps or gear up with a water jogger
and have a non-impact run. You can even rally your family or friends to join you for a game of water volleyball or swimming races. If you’re vacationing, take advantage of the hotel or cruise ship pool -- some facilities even offer aqua aerobics classes. If you’re beach bound, take a jog down the shoreline in knee deep waves -- the extra resistance from the water will give you a tougher workout than a water-free run. Try something new Though vacations and travel to new places provide the opportunity to do novel activities -- fitness or otherwise -- you can take up a new sport or type of outdoor exercise at home base, too. Take your bike to a local trail system and do a different trail every week. Strap on some rollerblades and stride beachside or through a park in your locale. Join an outdoor recreational group and enjoy the sunny fun activities available in your neighborhood. Instead of yoga class, do your yoga routine on a local hill or mountain top as the sun rises or sets. Simply make a goal of doing a new physical activity every week and you’ll stay fit all summer long.

Survivor…
Outlast, Outwit and Outplay your camping trip Ah, the summer sun slowly warming through your body, the crisp breeze rolling over your skin and rustling the tree leaves, the gentle babbling brook sparkling, running through the field, and the gentle hum of birds and insects. It must be summer time! Summer is a fantastic time to get into the outdoors and get close to nature on a camping trip, and Mid Canterbury has many gorgeous camping spots to chose from, whether you enjoy the controlled atmosphere of a camping ground, or roughing it ‘freedom camping’ style. New Zealand is known for its outdoor scenery and lifestyle. Camping is a popular way to see some of the best sights and sounds of beautiful New Zealand. Pack your backpack, car or van with the following necessities, then head to the bush! 1: Pick a Season-appropriate Sleeping Bag To ensure you’ll stay cozy, choose a sleeping bag that has a lower temperature rating for winter camping trips. A lightweight sleeping bag will do in warmer months but in the winter you’ll need one that’s got a lower temperature rating. Always go with one that will keep you toasty in a lower temperature range than you actually plan to camp in, just in case the mercury drops. To enhance your
sleeping experience with your sleeping bag, place a pad or long cushion beneath it for a much more comfortable slumber. 2: Leave No Trace When you leave the campsite, there should be no evidence of your visit. As you’re living it up on the open range, keep this next camping tip in mind; it will help you protect and preserve nature so that you and future generations can enjoy it again and again. Leave no trace, meaning pick up after yourself to leave the ecosystem undisturbed. Clean up thoroughly after meals and secure your food high above the ground. Use established fire rings, keep campfires small, and cook on a stove. Keep your distance from wildlife, and don’t feed the animals. 3: Dress for the Occasion Even if you’re not fashion-conscious, planning outfits for your outdoor adventure is just as important as any other camping tip. Dress in loose layers of clean clothing. Of course, in months with colder weather, you’ll wear more clothing -- such as hats, gloves, jackets and thermal underwear -- than in warmer seasons. Then, there’s footwear. When you’re
camping, you need to protect your feet. Wear closed-toe shoes that have some sort of moisture-absorbing lining. Hiking boots are ideal, and one way to prevent blisters when you’re exploring trails is by rubbing a bar of soap on your heels and underneath your toes before you head out. Always pack a waterproof poncho to protect you from the rain; the last thing you want is to get your clothing drenched. Wearing wet clothing could cause hypothermia. 4: Avoid Bugs and Poisonous Plants Exercise caution around dense foliage, and wear long-sleeved shirts and pants. When pitching your tent or setting up another type of shelter, be on the lookout for wasp nests and other insects and bugs. If you’re hanging out near vegetation, it’s a good idea to wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants. It won’t hurt to apply insect repellent either. It’s a good idea to have calamine lotion and an antihistamine or allergy medicine on hand in case you come across an irritant. 5: Don’t Get Lost Experienced camping enthusiasts know this camping tip, so plant it in your brain: Don’t get lost. A compass, map and GPS
device can keep you from disappearing into the land of the lost. Of course, none of these tools will do you any good if you don’t know how to use them. So, take some time well in advance of your camping trip to learn how to read a map and use your compass and GPS. 6: Tote a Survival Kit A compass is an invaluable tool for your wilderness survival kit. When it comes to camping, nothing could be truer than the Boy Scout motto “Be prepared.” Carrying a survival kit when you venture away from your campsite is an indispensable camping tip. So, what do you pack in this kit? For starters, you’ll want to have water-purifying tablets, a water filter and a metal bowl. Then, add a survival knife, which can be used to hunt, to protect yourself and to signal for help. Not just any blade will do; it’s worth investing in one from a camping or outdoor goods store. Another must-have in your survival kit is waterproof matches stored in an airtight container. Keep a flashlight in your survival kit, and store extra batteries in an airtight container similar to the ones you store your matches in. In addition to toting a survival kit, you should also have a small first aid kit with you. Stock bandages, wound cleanser, latex gloves and cold packs in it.

What’s in your hand bag
We are a curious species. I’m not quite sure why that is, but people are fascinated by other people! It’s in our human nature to be inquisitive. We like to know what makes others tick. So we prod. We poke. We peer. We peek. We ask questions. And above all else, we observe. The casual on-looker can gather a lot of information about a person just by observing. The books you read, the music you listen to, the kind of drink you order and even the food you eat says something about you. If you’re reading this blog right now, chances are you’re curious about me. And whether we are tight friends or perfect strangers, I have to admit there’s something about you that I’m kind of curious about too. So what is it about our fellow human that has all of us so awfully intrigued? The ‘what’s in your bag’ trend seems to be taking the on-line world by storm. There are massive groups dedicated to this topic on Flickr and Facebook, where anyone from around the world can empty their bag, photograph the contents and discuss why these items are their ‘must haves’, and randomly, these forums can be a great help! I’ve discovered lip balms that double as scar healers, breath mints that come with mirrors, tiny disposable toothbrushes that have toothpaste already applied, and wee flight makeup compacts to keep you looking great from a wee palm compact. We’re in an age where we need everything
on the go, because who has time to go home and pick up extra supplies? We need everything in our bags to get us through our busy day, and it’s amazing what discoveries you can make looking in someone’s bag. So we began a hunt to find someone we could corner to rummage through their personal belongings to see what treasures we could unearth. The lucky victim was our real estate expert, Jill Quaid from First National Real Estate. So here’s what gems we found in Jill’s bag. Jills handbag is a smart black number, large with multiple zipped pockets, perfect for the busy business woman. Jill picked this up in Australia. Inside she keeps essentials such as her wallet and Nokia Smart phone – handy for receiving e-mails on the go. To stay looking great throughout the day, Jill packs 2 of her favourite Avon lipsticks, some hair mousse, moisturiser and her favourite Gucci perfume. The business essentials are in there, leather organiser, note pads, multiple pens and business cards. Showing that Jill loves to travel, the Koru Club membership is handy, along with a stylish pair of Rip Curl sunnies for hot days on the run. If we can find more brave women like Jill, we hope to bring you this feature each month, so watch this space!

Soothe the spirit Enhance the beauty of your home’s landscape with tranquil water features that calm the mind and soothe the spirit. Water entices wildlife to visit as it creates a natural environment for birds, butterflies and aquatic life. Make the most of your waterscape with a combination of plants, rocks and statuary. Being creative with your landscape can really increase the value of your home. The first thing you see when you go to the house is of course the house’s landscaping surrounding it. A great way to make your lawn and yard stand out is to add a nice waterfall, or install a gorgeous fountain. The sky is the real limit when it comes to adding water features to your landscape. There are many professionals just a phone call away to give estimates and that can give you ideas on what to do in a certain price range. You will not regret branching out a bit and turning a regular landscape into something special with some of the many different water features available.
Ponds • When planning your pond, note the location of trees and plants in the area. Fertilizer runoff and fallen leaves can pollute your pond, so don’t plan one at the lowest point on your property. Your aquatic plants will need four to six hours of sun each day, meaning shady areas are not a good location unless your pond is only being used as a habitat for fish. A water garden is a pond that combines fish and plant life. It should have a depth of at least 1 metre, but make it deeper if there’s a chance it will freeze in winter. Even without fish or plants, install a pump to circulate the water, which keeps it clean as it adds ambient sound to the pond’s environment. Hard edges made from rocks or stonelike pavers should surround your pond to protect against erosion. Vary the height of stacked stones to create a natural look. Plant tall shrubs to help hide your fish from predators. Add water lilies and lotus plants to your pond. You can also include floating plants like duckweed and water ferns. Oxygenating water plants, such as anacharis and cabomba help keep the pond aerated for fish. Fountains • Flowing water is a restful enhancement to a landscape’s design. Fountains are either rising jets or downward falls, and many fountains use a combination of both. A freestanding masonry fountain or one made of excavated rock can be sized to fit the overall dimensions of your waterscaped area.
A fountain can also be made of statuary in the shape of animal or human figures. The type you choose should complement the architectural style of your home. Cascading fountains might have multiple bowls stacked like stairs and be made of copper, porcelain or any hard material that can hold water. Surround your fountain with water-loving plants that will enjoy the humidity. Bog irises, foxglove and golden meadowsweet are good choices for planting in the marshy ground around your water feature. Waterfalls • When adding a waterfall, it should match your home’s architectural style. Wall-mounted waterfalls work for limited space areas on small lots. Have your waterfall feed into a pond and create a walkway of ceramic tile or natural stone that leads to your waterscaped area. Create a footbridge over your pond that’s close enough to the waterfall that you can see and hear its calm serenity as you walk across. When combined with water features, your landscape should feel earthy as it envelops you in nature. When deciding to invest in building a waterfall in your landscape, there are a number of factors to consider. Most often the idea is to make it as beautiful and peaceful as possible, but you can make a very striking and loud water feature. A waterfall planned and constructed properly can complete any backyard and transform your space into a magical landscape of sights and sounds. The first factor when planning your
waterfall is elevation. Natural elevation changes or places with existing ponds in your yard can be perfect for such an installation. However, not everything can be so perfectly placed in your yard. When there is not suitable elevation for a waterfall then it will have to be created from dirt. You will also need a staging area for the water when it is pumped on top of the waterfall assembly. These basins can be created from plastic or made from natural stone. Cost can be a factor and depends on whether you have professional help. The more rocks, ripples, and elevation you have placed in your waterfall the more sound it will make. You need to decide what kind of environment you would like to build. Obviously, if your space is meant be a perfect spot to curl up with a book, you may not want the sounds of white water rapids in your backyard. Most of my clients settle for a babbling brook which makes for a very peaceful environment for any activity or gathering. Remember, the design and planning of a water feature is the most important consideration. A well planned installation will cause less unforeseen problems and will keep your costs within budget. Licensed and experienced landscaping companies will help you make the most of your investment and keep your frustrations to a minimum. Installing water features is hard work and it is almost always a better idea to hire a professional.

Essentials for the garden shed Garden sheds all over the country are going through a revival, gone are the days when only the tin shed types prevailed. Nowadays garden sheds can be anything from an old packing crate, to recycled wardrobes and water tanks to the fancy new purpose built wooden ones that contain everything including the kitchen sink. It does not matter what your garden shed looks like, what’s important is what it contains. Whether it is big or small, all garden sheds require a few essentials to ensure a bumper crop. With Christmas looming some may be asking what would you like this year, a few items for the garden shed may be just the answer. The Essentials Potting bench – a strong and sturdy bench or table is a vital component for a garden shed. Old doors, picnic tables, ironing boards or up turned drums all work well as a garden work surface. Sowing seeds and potting up is always easiest and more enjoyable when done at waist height. Tool kit – well-kept tools will last for years, if well looked after they can be passed down from one generation to the next. Fork, rake, trowel, spade are all required for planting and digging. Secateurs, craft knife and a string line are essential too, wheelbarrow, watering can and gloves complete the list. Ferts and dirts. Ferts - No good garden can thrive without the right ingredients. Ferts (fertilisers) are the backbone of any successful garden.
Ensure you always have on hand the four most important fertilisers. Nitrophoska Blue compound fertiliser for rapid, sustained growth in vegetables, fruits and ornamentals, Tui General Fertiliser to boost soil nutrients and trace elements , Tui Lawn Fertiliser for lawns and Tui Eco-Fert soluble fertiliser for pots and containers. Dirts include everything from compost and garden mix to container mixes and seed raising mix. Tui Vegetable Mix is perfect for growing all vegetables in, use it in containers or raised gardens. Using this mix means, you do not need to add any extras into the soil as it has all included in the one potting mix. It’s so versatile you can even plant veggies such as lettuces, broccoli and cabbages straight into the bag, and without delay as it wont burn roots. Border patrol – prevention is always the best form of plant protection. Slugs and snails can test the patience of any gardener. Lay Quash slug and snail pellets around all seedlings at planting time and regularly until harvest to ensure what you munch don’t crunch. As an alternative grow crops under Haxnicks grow tunnels or cloches. Pests can’t penetrate these protective layers keeping vegetables fresh and intact. Read all about it – ensure you have at least one good garden reference book, for the veggie garden seek out The Tui NZ Vegetable Garden. This easy to understand book takes you through each process from sowing seeds and planting, to growing and harvest. The plastic cover
of this book makes it a robust companion to live in the garden shed. Water control – water is a vital ingredient in the garden. Veggie gardens will struggle to flourish without regular supplies of fresh water. Morning watering is ideal, it’s not a good idea to water plants in the evening, this can cause disease problems; hence the golden rule never put your garden to bed wet. Add Saturaid to the soil to help it hold onto more moisture, this product has super powers as it quickly enables dry soils to hold onto water again. Crowd watch - weeds. Ensure you always have always have time to pull weeds or have some weed spray in the garden shed to deal with unwanted plants around your gardens. Spray or weed as soon as you notice the weeds growing.
Planters and Pots. If space is at a premium in your garden, vegetable planters are the perfect way to economically increase your growing area. Potato, tomato, strawberry and herb planters are widely. New this season are the carrot, space saver and cane planters from Haxnicks, these will be a welcome addition to any garden and can be stored in the shed during winter months. With Christmas approaching, they are a brilliant gift idea for that gardener who has everything. Seat or bench. It is well recognised that a comfy seat or chair placed in your garden shed or green house aids to the well-being of both the garden and the gardener. Select something comfy to rest the limbs and to enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Money & Love:
Pre-Nuptial Agreements
Many girls feel uncomfortable about bringing up money when they’re in the first throes of love, but while thinking of a future break-up is a bit of a buzz-killer, smart girls know not every relationship lasts the long haul. If you’re about to get married, shacking up with your partner or considering purchasing a major asset, it’s essential you have some pretty frank discussions around what should happen if things don’t pan out the way you plan. It’s also a good idea to seek independent legal advice so you can make sure your assets and interests are protected. For individual advice on nuptial agreements you will need to consult your legal advisor. It is important not to feel afraid of taking legal advice to protect your assets and lifestyles. It is not greedy or tacky and certainly, in the case of a relationship, does not indicate you do not love your partner. I am often asked to talk to groups about women and money, including, recently, an all girl school where I talked to the graduating class who were to attend university or enter the workforce. I strongly urged the young women to discuss the organisation of a pre-nuptial agreement prior to entering into a relationship. The reaction from these modern young women was one of horror. They could not, they informed me, discuss money in case they fought about it with their partner, or ‘he’ thought that he wasn’t loved. I pointed out that if the relationship couldn’t cope with a frank but respectful discussion of money and property issues, it probably was not a very good one! A pre- or post-nuptial agreement makes a lot of sense, not only in that it will protect your share of any assets in the case of divorce or separation, but that it sets out a blueprint agreement on financial and ownership issues. These days, de facto relationships are treated the same way as marital relationships. Relationship property is all property acquired for the common use and benefit of both parties in the relationship.
This relates to all property acquired after the relationship begins, whichever partner makes the contribution. For example if you inherit money from your great aunt and pay off the mortgage, the mortgagefree house is relationship property. It may be that you wish to keep your inheritance separate from joint property; a pre- or post-nuptial agreement would identify that, and would list separate property – this could be assets acquired prior to the relationship, inheritances, or gifts. An agreement can identify property you wish to keep separate, for example heirlooms, or can preserve property for children – and save legal costs – in the event of a separation. Agreements are not written in stone and can be revisited and altered. I know of one couple who review their agreement annually in conjunction with revisiting their budget and life goals – an excellent idea in my opinion. One shouldn’t be afraid to address financial and property issues – they can become emotional – and a written agreement can remove a lot of hurt generated by financial discussions.
Wow, getting married!

10 sultry summer make-up tips With summer just around the corner you’ve probably been through your wardrobe and dusted down your summer clothes but what about your make-up bag? Now is the perfect time to give it a summer makeover. 1. Essential protection Protect your skin from damage this summer by using a moisturiser with an SPF factor of 15 or higher. Use it daily and you’ll help to combat those early signs of aging such as sun spots and fine lines. Remember that you’ll be exposed to harmful UVA and UVB rays even on a cloudy day. Apply your SPF moisturiser to a clean face and allow 10 minutes for it to absorb before applying your foundation. 2. Lighten up When the warm weather hits you might find that foundation and powder feels too heavy on your skin. For a fresher, lighter look switch to a tinted moisturiser, apply with a damp sponge and you’ll be sure to get an even look. A little concealer dabbed under the eye will give added radiance. 3. Fake it On a lovely summer’s day there is nothing better than the appearance of a healthy glow to make you feel better, and one of the easiest ways of achieving this is with bronzing powder. There is no risk of turning orange or blotchy like a fake tan. 4. The eyes have it Eye shadows in lighter, neutral shades are perfect for the summer. If it’s really hot and you don’t want to go to the effort of applying a full make-up, a touch of mascara and a little eye liner will ‘open’ up the eye and bring your face to life. For a lighter, more summery appearance, swap your black mascara for one that is either brown-black or brown. To complete your look remember to have your eyebrows professionally shaped. 5. Essential waterproofing There is nothing worse than running mascara, so if you’re planning a beach holiday or going to a wedding, consider your choice of mascara with care. Waterproof mascara is great, but you’ll probably need an oil-based eye make-up remover to take it off properly so that you don’t get an unsightly build-up. If you don’t want the hassle, it’s worth

getting your eyelashes professionally tinted. If you’re particularly fair and have very light eyebrows it’s worth getting them dyed too. 6. Luscious lips Being out in the fresh air can take its toll on your skin and that includes your lips. If you’re sunbathing, it’s important to remember to use some lip balm to keep them soft and supple. When you’ve got a slight tan, a touch of lipstick or lip gloss is often all you need to face the world. 7. Holiday glam Make the most of your newly-acquired tan by using a Glow highlighter on your cheekbones and brow. With its subtle pearlescent lustre it looks amazing on tanned skin and you can even use it in the daytime to help keep your holiday glow when you return to work. For a touch of instant evening glamour apply the Glow highlighter to your shoulders and decolletage. 8. Cheeky cheeks If you don’t like using fake tans and bronzing powders, the easiest way to achieve a healthy natural glow is with blush. Whether your blush is an ultra-fine powder or a light cream, the rules are the same. Apply it along your cheekbones or the apples of your cheeks, depending on your face shape. Remember to build up the colour gradually until you get the soft natural glow that you’re looking for. 9. Tip-top toes You’ll want your feet to look their best if you’re wearing sandals or flip-flops this summer. Build time into your weekly beauty routine to pamper them. Remember to use a pumice or foot file to keep them free from dry skin and unsightly cracked heels and moisturise regularly to ensure that skin appears smooth and supple. 10. And finally... If you are going to be spending large amounts of time in the sun, whether in the garden or on the beach, make sure you invest in a bottle of sun tan lotion, a floppy sun hat and a pair of sun glasses to help protect your skin from potential sun damage.

Best Summer Updos for 2010 Stay cool with these Hollywood chic hairstyles Side pony
Milly by Michelle Smith’s spring 2010 collection was punctuated by side ponies, which are making a major comeback. Showcasing this side-swept look just right: actress Mila Kunis.
Pony with side-swept bangs
Adding side-swept fringe to a timeless midplaced ponytail can soften an angular jawline and accentuate cheekbones. Jennifer Aniston makes this easy hairstyle look red-carpet-ready.
Undone chignon
Seemingly effortless style is always chic. For a not-too-polished do, pull some strands out of your chignon, as Olivia Wilde did. The undone look also appeared on Thakoon’s spring 2010 catwalk.
Pumped-up chignon
Teasing hair at the crown and brushing a soft layer over it can yield winning results—just see Hilary Duff’s chignon for proof. Though subtle, a bit of height at the top adds instant glamour to any look.
Seven hot tips for healthy summer hair You love spending time in the summer sun – but your hair might not love you for it! Sun, salt, chlorine – it all spells damage for your hair. Without proper precautions the extra sun, beach and chlorine exposure will fade hair colour, cause green hair, lead to coarse, dry hair, and leave behind destruction that can last for years to come. Sun-damaged hair, however, is not an unavoidable price to pay for summer fun in the sun. Here are the top ten hair care tips for summer to protect your hair from sun damage. 1.Don’t wash your hair more than twice a week if at all possible. Many of the lubricants your hair needs to stay silky and smooth after sun exposure are made by the scalp itself, but if you wash them away, your hair can only dry out. 2. Massage your scalp every time you shampoo. Massaging your scalp stimulates the
production of hair-protective sebum, but be careful that you don’t tug on fragile hair. You want to stimulate the oil glands in your scalp to produce the sebum that lubricates your hair and makes it full, but you don’t want to pull out damaged hair. 3. Moisturising Treatments. A moisturizing treatment or mask is crucial in keeping hair nourished and looking great. Choose a protein and nutrient rich product and don’t skimp on the time. Leave it on for at least 15 minutes to ensure proper penetration of the hair shaft. 4. Air-dry. Don’t blow dry. Don’t use a blow drier to dry your hair. The heat from your blow drier only compounds sun damage. If you must use a blow drier, turn it to its lowest setting and use a diffuser, a filter you place on the end of your blow drier. 5. Use appropriate hair restoration products. Hair products that provide sun protection

from UVA and UVB rays should be used year round but during the summer it is the most critical. Multiple products offering sun protection can be layered for increased protection including leave-in conditioners, styling and finishing products. 6. Avoid using hair mousse on dry, brittle hair. Mousse can dry out your hair. Use a hair-thickening agent instead. Hair straighteners, relaxants, and dyes should also be avoided on dry hair. 7. Finally, no list of hair care tips would be complete without a reminder to take care of your hair from the inside out. Most of the time it’s enough to make sure you keep well hydrated, by drinking at least eight cups (about 2 liters) of water every day, eating foods that include n-3 essential fatty acids (such as olive oil, nuts, seeds, and fish), and getting your recommended daily intake of vitamins and minerals all support naturally flexible, silky, lustrous hair that stands up to sun and heat.
Styles for beach hair • Beach hair is all about finding a fantastically casual look so use a spray-on, leave-in conditioner to create texture with minimal wave or to tame frizz on curly hair and leave to dry naturally in the warm beach air. • Go for a plait - a great way of protecting coloured, damaged or aged ends. Plaits are also a big look this season and create a fabulously natural sun-kissed look when worked into sun-scorched hair in random sections. • Ensure long or mid-length hair is tied up, tucking in the aged ends because these are always the most susceptible to damage. Any hair tied up helps because this means only newly grown (and therefore rich with the hair protein keratin) hair is exposed to the sun. • Hair jewels and accessories are a major trend this summer - work them into any hair randomly and go for vintage pieces for ultimate glamour and to take beach hair to sultry evening.

Blooming of the Lollipop Ladies Tessa Benham It seems like women’s boobs just keep getting bigger, as the old 12B as a standard size has been replaced with a 14C/D and growing with some UK reports suggesting 12F is becoming the new base size. As a bra-obsessed designer, a few weeks ago I flew over to the University of Melbourne to join a small group of specialists to learn from a UK specialist about plus-size bra design up to a, wait, yes a K cup. Yep, for those of you already gasping it is actually possible to buy up to a NN cup in stores in Europe. The trend that I found the most interesting was that of what I’m calling ‘Lollipop Ladies’, girls and women with tiny back sizes of 6-12 with massive boobs. Is it all the chicken hormones we are eating or what? Experts claim the increase is due to changing body shapes due to diet and lifestyle changes (like sitting in our car munching lunch on the way to an appointment), and the rise in popularity of cosmetic surgery created by bigger-busted celebrities such as Kelly Brook and Jordan. And of course plastic surgery is becoming more popular, but in my work I am seeing girls as young as 13 having to be fit in size 6 and 8 G and H cups, and hiding them under baggy shirts to hide their blooming sexuality. Some of the increase has undoubtedly been due to poor bust measuring techniques in the past, results show that many women are often between one and two cup sizes larger and smaller in the band width than they realize. This is because most of your support should come from the band around your body, with the wire then following the crease or bulge of the breast shape which can mean a bigger cup shape is needed. This avoids the wire sitting on the bust tissue or riding up and squeezing onto the bust itself, and importantly it stops you spilling over the top and getting the ‘double boob’ look. Not good in a tight tee. Generally too the weight women carry is further down on her waist and hips, not around her chest. With a selection of bras for large cup sizes slowly becoming available, it’s hard to believe that it’s still tricky to find well-fitting pretty bras for small backs and large cups that aren’t akin to parachute harnesses and aren’t padded. All most big busted women want is support specifically designed for a large cup, that aren’t boring clinical white or stripper pink, and aren’t composed of so much fabric that you could carry your shopping home in the cups in an emergency. Designers are now realising they having to develop entirely new bra designs which are strong enough to cope with fuller busts, and we are lucky to have fashion forward options now available in New Zealand such as Dimity So, Freya, Curvy Kate and Fantasie to name a few. Make sure you are professionally fit, it saves so much heart ache (boob ache, back ache) in the end. Make sure you try your favourite fitted top or stretchy tee over each bra you fit to ensure the shape is what you want, not too pointy, or ‘east-west’ (point each index finger right now east and west and you’ll get my meaning). A properly fitting bra can make you look a dress size or 3 smaller too, I guarantee that, as it will lift your breasts into the correct position so they don’t hang too low or flatten out to the sides of your body making you appear wider. Finally don’t be scared of the numbers and letters. Its important to realise that an F cup for example is not always bigger than a E or DD cup. In fact, a bra’s cup size is dependant on the band size – so a 10F holds the same volume as a 12E, its just the back/bust proportion is differently shaped. And remember noone sees your bra size but you!

Going under the knife Many women all around the world wish to have bigger breasts. I’m sure at some point we have all stuffed our bra with tissue paper or stuck balloons up our tops. On the flip side an increasing amount of women are suffering and unhappy with large breasts, feeling their breasts are a curse rather than a blessing. Large breasts may sound attractive but the reality can be anything but for those living with the discomfort.
Overly large breasts can cause some women to have both physical and emotional problems. The weight of excess breast tissue can impair your ability to lead an active life while causing back, neck and shoulder pain. The emotional discomfort and self-consciousness often associated with having large breasts can be as important to many women as the physical discomfort and pain. Some women find that they are subject to unwanted attention or comments about their appearance, which can lead to isolation and not travelling out in public. Also known as reduction mammaplasty, breast reduction surgery removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with your body and to alleviate discomfort. The decision to undergo breast reduction surgery is very personal and should not be influenced by someone else’s desires or ideals. There are various techniques of the procedure. Usually the surgeon makes an anchor-shaped incision that is around the areola, and then moves down to the natural fold underneath the breast. Then
Relieve the discomfort
excess fat, glandular tissue and skin are removed. Then a surgeon moves the nipple with the areola area (a darker area around the nipple) into a new position. Breasts are formed to have a new and better shape. Who should consider breast reduction surgery? If your breasts are causing you severe psychological distress, are affecting your physical health or your ability to do exercise then breast reduction is a solution. If you are experiencing backache, neck and shoulder ache then large breasts can be responsible for this. This can cause long term health problems. Your appearance is also affected: large breasts can make you look unbalanced and have a big impact upon your appearance in general. Some women find them attractive but a great many women don’t and will have surgery to reduce their size. The other issue is that they are out of proportion with the rest of your body. You may feel that you are ‘top heavy’ and this can affect your self-confidence. There is also the added factor of being subject to inappropriate comments or attentions
Bring back the joy of everyday living and activities without the pain and discomfort of large breasts.

Your stars,

with Madame Latanya... November 2010
Aries Mar 21 - Apr 19 You’re on the verge of a breakthrough, but like a ship about to set sail, making sure all the maintenance is in order will be vital if there is to be a successful launch. Deep down inside you know what it is you have to do to set yourself up in the right position but sometimes it’s easier said than done. Things start to become clearer when Jupiter, planet of opportunity stations direct on the 23rd making your choices become both obvious and slightly more concrete. While it may be a few more months until you can really start playing the field, you’re so close now you can almost taste it. Now it’s up to you to make the most of your time while you wait.
Cancer June 21 - July 22 A new level of emotional awareness has been brought to the fore with the intense interactions you’ve had over the last month. Not only have you had to look someone straight in the eye and confront their behaviour, its also likely made you take a step back and look at the hand you’ve had in the situation. When Venus, relationship planet re-aligns itself on the 19th, you’ll be able to clear the air and move on with compassion and empathy. A harmonious aspect of transiting Saturn to Venus is an excellent opportunity to mature in your sensuous relationship with your partner, and if you are single, the month promises great opportunity in finding romance.
Taurus Apr 20 - May 20 With all the intensity going on in your personal life it would be easy to think that the Bull’s legendary patience has been pushed to the edge but somehow your boundaries are being stretched to new limits. This is a good time to openly express your feelings so that you will be totally sincere with yourself and with your loved one. You’ll come to a deeper understanding within your most intimate relationships with the New Moon on the 6th as you’ll feel secure enough within yourself to strike up a happy balance. Once the minor details have been sorted out, you’ll feel you can veer back out into the world again with a strong foundation of trust in your personal backdrop.
Leo July 23 - Aug 22 Taking charge of your life and seizing opportunities that come your way never seemed so easy as it will for the first three weeks of the month when your attitude will scream carpe diem! From time to time it may seem as though you’re walking on a tightrope but your place in the story becomes clearer when Jupiter, planet of expansion returns to its normal course of action on the 23rd putting you on the straight and narrow. Funding and resources may have been erratic or uncertain for the last four months but now you’ll be able to move forward with confidence. Passion and romance will be hot this month, and will only get hotter moving toward next year. Keep fuelling the fire.
Scorpio
Libra Sept 23 - Oct 22 When action packed Mars joins the mix mid month, you’ll get the boost you need to put your plans into a action and begin taking the steps to move forward. You’ll have the stamina and gusto to make progress on what may have seemed before like an up-hill struggle. Since you’ve set your sights so high, wouldn’t it be great to stand at the summit? If you are in love with someone and up until now have not expressed your feelings, it probably would be a good time to do it, provided that you are sure and know for certain that your selection is right.
Oct 23 - Nov 21
Since early last month, feelings of nostalgia and memories of people from the past have played heavy on your heart and mind. When Venus, planet of relationships finally goes direct on the 19th, you’ll feel as though you can move on in good faith. Taking the time to enjoy life and surrounding yourself with positive people will help you lighten up, especially if you’ve been particularly hard on yourself as of late. There is a possibility of making a good social contact, or entering a higher circle thanks to the prestige of a friend or partner.
Aquarius
Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19
Thinking outside of the box and stepping outside of your usual creature comforts are both moves to help your creative process unfold as it’s likely that you’re dying to break from your self-imposed conventions and write a new chapter in your own book of life. As Jupiter and Uranus have been in retrograde motion since summer you’ve likely been thinking about it rather than following through with it. But at last when Jupiter begins to move forward again on the 23rd, it will seem as though you’ll miraculously to attract opportunities which give you mental floss – something to stretch your imagination.
Jan 20 - Feb 18
From the middle of last month, the time spent with work colleagues or authorities at your office may have been a terse affair as relationship planet Venus has been in retrograde motion putting a spin on things. When the New Moon comes along on the 6th, it would be a good time to mend any fences that have been damaged along the way as it will not only strengthen the bond between you and your co-workers, but bring about a much needed truce. When Venus finally goes direct on the 19th, peace will have been restored but now the unspoken boundaries are likely to be well respected.

Gemini May 21 - June 20 Things you thought you could count on or may have even taken for granted are all beginning to fall to the wayside leaving you to tap into your reserve funds to keep the momentum of your life as you know it. You will also have opportunities for creative leisures, enjoying new surroundings, and very fulfilling periods, weekends or a vacation with a loved one. You will be able to use your energies constructively when assertive Mars teams up with diligent Saturn between the 9th to the 19th giving you a formidable boost. You’ll begin to see tangible results almost immediately bringing your plans to the next level.
Virgo
Aug 23 - Sept 22 Over the past year, a wind of change has swept some people out of the way making way for a new dynamic in your life. Sometimes this may have brought unsettling results, other times you may have laughed at the absurdity. But whatever the case, all of the players in the game called life have come bearing a message and now it up to you to decipher what it all means. Venus, planet of love goes direct on the 19th lifting the veil of confusion and introspection making you move forward with eyes wide open and a solid sense of security.
Sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21 Mid month when disciplined Saturn steps in, your aims become more streamlined giving you a sharper focus on the end result. From the 9th to the 19th, you’ll be able to reap the rewards through a strategic plan of attack although your workload may temporarily be heavier as a result. The additional boost of confidence helps find the right balance of stamina to stay motivated and the perseverance to follow through giving you the push you needed to make it to the finish line with time to spare.
Pisces Feb 19 - March 20 Your desire to take your career aspirations to the next level will compel you to do what it takes to get ahead as a burst of ambition spurs you on. Pushing yourself to the limit and keeping your eye on the prize helps you get ahead bringing you the progress you’ve been looking for. From the 9th to the 19th the extra effort you put in could be the force needed to help the momentum pick up and get the results you’ve been after. People will stop and take notice of your enthusiasm and may want to support you on your mission.
