Envy, October, Issue 25

Welcome to October...

I’m sure I could be forgiven to think that Mid-Canterbury is possibly the most gorgeous place to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon this Spring. Last Sunday I found myself out in the country, snow covered mountains in the vista, hot sunshine illuminating the horizon with a refreshing breeze blowing the fine blossom scent throughout the air. Bright yellow daffodils striking against lush green grass, with calves and lambs skipping and playing in the fields, ducklings bobbing over a sparkling stream. How lucky are we to live in such a beautiful area of the world. With the sensational Spring weather, comes Spring inspiration for renovation and gardening improvements. Pages 6 – 13 will fill you with encouragement to tackle the mission to make your home truely your castle, and you have the chance to win an amazing berry growing kit from Tui.

We highlight the excitement and prestige of Christchurch Cup and Show week on pages 14 and 15, and we have 4 family passes to the show to giveaway! Breast Cancer affects thousands of New Zealand families each year, and this October, we are heightening the awareness of the importance of self checking and mammograms. Curvy Girls on the Catwalk New Zealand Fashion Week Story: Natalie Cosgrove FashioNZ Photos: The Carpenters Daughter It was hard to resist The Carpenter’s Daughter’s ‘Feminine Wiles’ on the runway… and it was also impossible to resist the sweet treats we were given on the way in – tubs of ice cream! TCD are a much loved brand, and for good reason. Caroline Marr and her team certainly know how to accentuate and celebrate a woman’s curves. A standout for me was the lashings of lace, including a beautiful lace full-length dress, which was so beautiful. ‘Feminine Wiles’ include beauty, charm and sexual allure, as well as wisdom, wit and warmth. And the collection certainly will help a woman utilise these charms! The inspiration for ‘Feminine Wiles’ was drawn from the early 1900s, when King Edward ruled. He favoured women who emphasised their womanly curves. The Edwardian period saw women’s bodies being liberated from the constraints of the corset, and a move towards softer, more flowing fabrics. Caroline Marr says: “the female silhouette of that era has been translated into a contemporary look juxtaposed with pieces inspired by the menswear of the era”. I’ve seen the dynamic Caroline Marr in action before, when she revealed her tricks and tips to dressing to flatter a woman’s body. This ability was again evident on the runway, with flowing fabrics used to create long, flattering lines, which made the most of the models’ curves. TCD understand that fashion should be fun for all women, and this translated beautifully into their runway show. Models of all sizes and ages went down the runway looking beautiful. Lots of sequins, velvet and fur added detail and texture – special mention must be made of the very-cute fur muffs some of the models carried! You couldn’t help but leave the show smiling – TCD always has the best audience, who cheered the models on with shouts of ‘go girl’! Another triumph for Caroline and the TCD team.

Passion

for Vino Story: Amanda Niblett Photo: Kirsty Graham It is by pure chance that wine master Michael Hooper was able to grace our presence in Ashburton for a wine evening at the Somerset Grocer. On a business trip from the Pasquale Viticultura winery in Kurow, to Christchurch, they happened to stop for a bite to eat in the Somerset Grocer. Charmed by it’s minimalistic yet stylish decor, they were impressed by their effervescent waitress Sarah, who opened a fresh bottle of wine on the notion that the previously opened bottle may have no longer been at its best.

This passion toward good wine inspired Michael to return to the Grocer to offer tastings of the boutique wine from Pasquale, where he was invited to host one of their wine club evenings. The owner of Pasquale Viticultura is Antonio Pasquale, an enthusiastic Italian with a zest for life and vino. The grapes grown for his winery are from vineyards in the Hakataramea Valley in South Canterbury and the Waitaki Valley in North Otago. The high limestone content produce a strong mineral content, mixed with air so clean it could be cut with a scalpel, the wine can only be described as pristine. Antonio has a passion for a very dry wine, one that accompanies food perfectly. In New Zealand we have a tendency to drink wine by itself, but Antonio with his Italian heritage has been raised to appreciate the flavours of wine with good food. Antonio is a wine maker on the edge. His pioneering and ambitious approach has led him to being the only grower to attempt grapes in the Hakataramea Valley, with its steep inclines and snowy winters. Those that don’t take risks, seldom achieve greatness, and the same is true for Antonio’s wine. Antonio grows the limited Arneis grape that produces a fabulous dry wine similar to a dry sauvignon, which is stunning with a perfect food match. Even on a good year it is hard to produce enough of these grapes to satisfy the popularity of the harvest in Australia, but a percentage is always retained for the New Zealand market. Antonio, with winemaker Andy Nicole, are extraordinarily specific and perfectionists when it comes to each harvest. This year the Arneis harvest wasn’t quite up to scratch. Many other wineries would use additives and technology to produce a form of the wine, but authenticity and pureness is so important to Antonio, that he would rather die than mix ‘brought in’ grapes to complete his wine. Interestingly, many of the larger wineries will mix copious amounts of sugar and other additives to make their wine harvests similar from year to year, however Michael explained that the vintage will express itself differently within the bottle each year from an authentic harvest, and that is the true joy of wine. The flagship white marriage of Reisling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer, named the Alma Mater (nourishing mother), is a true field blend, with all components hand picked, grown in the splendid solitude of the Hakataramea Valley. It follows the traditional Italian style of blending different grapes together from the same vineyard, to produce a unique wine with lifted aromatics. Chatting with Michael Hooper was like an extremely good wine – went to fast and left me feeling invigorated.

Jancraft Craft Boutique

Jan McMurtrie has poured her heart and soul into her unique craft boutique in Rolleston. As an artist and ex-florist, Jan is cut out to work in her industry. She’s spent more than 10 years making hand-painted, hand-embossed and hand-stamped cards, with the ability to barcode them for the overseas markets.

“I’m regularly accessing new products from all over the world so that I’ve constantly got new things for my customers to look at as they come in. I’ve also got a lot of product to put out in the shop prior to Christmas.”

About seven years ago she converted and opened part of her personal premises into Jancraft Craft Boutique and she hasn’t looked back since.

One thing Jan prides herself on is being able to provide her customers, many of which come from Ashburton, with “good, old fashioned, friendly, one on one service”.

She started off by setting up just one room to sell out of but, as the business has expanded, that room has become her year ‘round Christmas room and half of her premises is now dedicated solely to Jancraft. Set in a peaceful cottage garden, Jancraft is true to its boutique name. “I’m an ex-florist so I like everything window-dressed and very visual, I’ve got a big cottage-style garden that my customers absolutely love.” The shop offers keen scrap bookers and card makers all the supplies they could possibly need. “There’s a huge range of stickers and stick-on embellishments, about 30 colours of card for card-making, card liners, rubber stamps and more,” Jan says.

With her business expanding, Jan, who can be seen weekly with her shop on CTV, has decided to turn one third of her premises into Jancraft and rebuild her house for herself. The change will mean a huge upheaval for Jan, however, she is looking forward to it immensely and to offering her customers an even bigger and better one stop shop for scrap booking and card making requirements. “I’m really passionate about my shop and it’s just progressing and expanding more and more as time goes by to the point where I had to expand my premises. “As an artist and ex-florist, this is what I do best.”

Come and visit this very beautiful craft shop, in a tranquil garden setting. Bursting with a huge product base for scrapbooking/card making and general craft supplies for all your craft projects. Also the gorgeous Christmas shop, which is full of festive products, is a must see all year round.

Hours: Open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm and closed Sunday and Monday.

Spring home renovation After you have lived in a house for a number of years you begin to get a bit bored with the current layout and decide to refurbish the place. The motivation for this change in your home could be inspired by a change in your circumstances your have had an addition to the family and need more space or simply the need to update the tired looking kitchen setting. However there is much confusion about what can and can’t be done by people that are new to home remodelling. For instance, an inexperienced DIYer may see many things that need to be done without being able to differentiate certain tasks from others. This leads to confusion and inefficiency and could be the cause of a failed project. In this case the issue is not a case of what to do but how to order the work and prioritise the tasks so that the project moves forward efficiently. If you can satisfactorily address these issues then you can make the changes you have dreamed of with confidence.

1. The Kitchen The kitchen is the most popular room in the home to start a renovation project off. Maybe this is because it shows more wear and tear over time or is used most. Most people start off in the kitchen as their first renovation project. Two popular ideas for renovating the kitchen are to do with creating more space in the kitchen. You can do this by knocking out walls to make one large room or by connecting the dining room to the kitchen to make a kitchen dining room in one. This can make the room far more sociable and the heartbeat of the home. However, if this is too large a project you could think about re-laying the floors to a more contemporary and coordinate them with the counter tops and workspaces. Unlike any other home remodelling project, kitchen renovation encompasses so many things-from the raw to the sublime, from the picayune to the important--that it can easily overwhelm even the most determined homeowner. A fine kitchen remodel instantly raises the value of your home, provides you with a more effective cooking space, and makes you the envy of all of your friends. So, before beginning this tough-butrewarding project, ask yourself: What Are My Needs and Desires? Is your kitchen a disaster zone where you can’t even manage to boil an egg? Or do you just want to freshen the place up with new appliances, countertops, floors, and cabinets? A need might be: I need kitchen cabinets because my current ones are falling apart. A desire might be: I desire a new dishwasher because my current one is ugly and noisy, though it works perfectly well. The first kitchen remodelling tip is to consider the three basic kitchen functions: storage, food preparation, and clean-up. A well-thought out kitchen design will accommodate each of these three functions. Ease of movement and convenient layout of kitchen design is important. The classic “work triangle” should be the basis of the floor plan. The kitchen sink, refrigerator, and stove, as the three kitchen features used most often, should be arranged in a triangular pattern. The work triangle concept saves unnecessary steps when preparing foods, and proves the most convenient layout design. Another kitchen remodelling idea is to

incorporate more than one work centre so that more than one person can work efficiently in the kitchen at one time. A selfstanding chopping block, service island, or other similar kitchen feature will increase convenient work space. Moderately-priced sheet vinyl is the most popular flooring for a kitchen; wood floors and ceramic tile – although more pricey – are also good choices. A qualified, licensed kitchen remodelling contractor is your best resource for expert advice on which type flooring and appliances best suit your budget and space requirements. Whatever the choice in finish materials, keep room functionality, convenience, and ease of movement in mind when making your selection. 7 ways to renovate your bathroom on a budget. Here are some effective tips in creating a beautiful bathroom. 1. Have a specific plan and budget for your bathroom renovation project. Realise the new design you are envisaging for your bathroom, and identify how much you are willing to spend to achieve your goal. If you plan involves a new toilet, shower, basin or bath, then it is advisable to consult with a plumber and a local bathroom specialist store for recommendations. Errors on the big ticket items will turn your renovation into a disaster, so it is better to be safe than sorry. 2. Stick with your plan. Once you already have the design that you ultimately want to accomplish and already have set up a budget plan for it, avoid deviating from them, otherwise you risk blowing the budget big time. Before you start ripping off the old tiles, you need to have a good plan. If you are doing a full remodel, are you going to change the footprint of the bathroom? If you are doing that, then that would mean you may have to re-work the plumbing and electricity. Include the new locations into your plan. Implement your project one at a time. You have to determine which part of your bathroom must first undergo redoing or replacement in order to fit into your planned design. 3. Do some canvassing first and compare the prices of items you need. Do not purchase the item you need in the first store you go into. It is advisable to widen your options. Visiting specialist stores with professionals that know their bathrooms is advisable, as you are more likely to make a sensible decision that will fit your plan. Go into several shops and stores and check out the prices they offer for the items you need. You may be able to save hundreds of dollars if you purchase the right item in the most affordable price. 4. Try shopping for items you need around the time when there may be discounts available. For example, during summer or throughout the holidays when most

Envy, October, Issue 25

people are not very keen on renovating their bathrooms, you might find some stores that offer discounts on items you need for your future bathroom renovation projects. There are many great stores in Mid-Canterbury that have professionals to offer assistance, so shop around within our region, and you may be surprised at the gorgeous fittings you can get at bargain prices! 5. Be aware of small and simple ways, which do not entail a lot of money but may contribute to change your bathroom’s appearance. Changing your shower curtain or installing a cabinet to put in towels can create a remarkable effect. Check out some of our local bathroom specialist shops and see if you can pick up a new towel rail or fittings. Many of our local gift and living stores also have gorgeous items to decorate your bathroom area...for example, chocolate brown towels teamed up with some bright red PVC artwork, and some silver scented candles, will have your bathroom looking stunning, and for under $100! 6. Paint is fairly inexpensive and can completely redecorate a bathroom on a budget. Creating designs such as lattice work, nature, or a two toned look with a border can spruce up a bathroom but won’t cost too much money. Using multiple colors when implementing these designs can create depth which also looks more expensive then it actually is. 7. Using tile for decorating a bathroom on a budget is a wise idea. Tile can be purchased for very little money and with the proper time taken to install the tiles can look very professional. The technique chosen to lay the tile is also important, mosaic designs look designer quality if done properly, but can be quite labor intensive. Setting tile evenly in strait lines and with equal amounts of calking or grout can also take a lot of time and effort. If in doubt, splash out and hire a professional, it may cost less than you think for a professional to do an outstanding job.

Envy, October, Issue 25

The Inspiration Story: Amanda Niblett Photos: Kirsty Graham It takes courage and determination to plan a renovation yourself, but Carl and Wendy Nordqvist were up for the challenge, despite working full time and having two children. The country home was originally Wendy’s family home 17 years ago, and looking at the immaculate dark grey Rockcote exterior, you would never have guessed that it used to have red bricks and a green roof. The striking black hotmix driveway laid by ACL, in contrast with the depth of colour in the established gardens, makes for a dramatic entrance. One of the clear benefits of renovating an existing property, compared with building

from scratch, is that the landscaping is already mature and established. This has given Wendy the opportunity to spruce up the existing gardens, combining classic beauty and depth, with new and bold plantings. She has combined the old bricks from the house, with fresh light river stones to contrast against the dark exterior of the house. The outdoors is completed with a stylish outdoor living area, consisting of smooth, ground concrete placed by Paveco, and covered with a sleek black sail shade from Peter May. Wendy and Carl designed and drew up the renovation plans themselves, to make sure they got the most from the area they had to

work with. They approached Smith & Sons to tackle the main construction and gutting of the interior. Now with the renovation completed, one step through the front door, you are greeted with a feeling of elaborance, yet clean and sleek lines, meshed with rich depth of colours and textures. The bold colours of the walls and furnishings, beside glass panels in each matching door, combine a chic style, with stainless steel long drop lights that illuminate the focal points of the open room. Many people are overwhelmed when they visit a paint store and see the plethora of paint chips, however Wendy knew what she liked, and went with stylish colours that

have defined the home. Andersons Joinery installed an extremely stylish and highly practical kitchen, with ample bench space, that flows effortlessly into the living dining area, matched perfectly with stainless steel appliances from Electraserve. A separate lounge adjoins, and features a stained wooden wall, to capture some of the original rusticness of the country home. Shades of green have been used in the decorating to swirl against the wooden features to create almost a calming rainforest effect, a perfect oasis of relaxation for Wendy and Carl to escape after a long days work.

Off the hallway, it is encouraging and fun to see that within a home of such gorgeous style, the children’s rooms are exciting and functional. Ben’s room is themed from the popular ‘Cars’ movie, while Tiffany’s room is pretty in purple following a Hannah Montana theme. The children were so excited to show off the details in their rooms, it was heart warming to see them so proud and enthusiastic of their own personal spaces. They also have their own combined relaxation space, located just off the open dining area, with comfy couches, a television, and a hidden computer station, also installed by Andersons Joinery. Their area opens up to the outdoors to their own private courtyard area, to easily entertain friends outside and in. Again functional and stylish, this combined space gives the

children their own space away from mum and dad, to play and have fun without causing havoc. The bathroom and restroom located off the hallway, used by guests and the children, have been elegantly ordained in delicate red artworks to complement the small red feature tiling. In contrast, the en-suite in the master bedroom can only be described and strong and masterful in black, white and greys. The shower, sleek fittings, vanity’s and accessories were purchased at Mico Plumbing, and the way that it all combines together exudes style and modern sophistication. Definitely an area of pure relaxation and Zen. The master bedroom is deep and passionate, with a luxurious and dare I say sexy feel to it. Just the way a master bedroom should be! The full length mirror

is both stylish and practical, where the main highlight in the room would have to be the walk in wardrobe, which seems to stretch backward further than the wardrobe that leads to Narnia. Every women’s dream! Every room has a feel, every room has it’s own individual style. Wendy has embellished each room lovingly, with matching vases, artwork and ornaments, mainly purchased locally. Throughout their entire renovation they always aimed to introduce unique elements into the space. They focused on both structural and design features to create the desired effect. Wendy believes that there’s no point going to Christchurch to shop specifically for your home, when shops in Ashburton like colour plus and Fusion Gallery have so many gorgeous items. They also purchased their drapes from colour plus, which are

gorgeously rich and complement each room perfectly. The lush carpet and smooth tiles are from Skip 2 it, and they used local services, such as electrical from Eclipse, plumbing from P&T Plumbing, and concrete paths from ACL Readymix Concrete. Completed, the finished product is now pure luxury and comfort that the family can relax amongst and enjoy every day. While no renovation project is without hiccups (and Wendy and Carl faced many along the way), the high points of finishing and furnishing is truely worth the experience. Create a space you want to come home to. Wendy and Carl offer their sincere thanks to all of the subcontractors who helped to make their dream home a reality, in particular to Smith & Sons, who were always reliable and on time.

Solid concrete that delivers on strength & style For your next concrete project, look no further than ACL to deliver quality readymixed concrete, designed to your specifications and delivered to your door. Concrete in your landscaping project has great potential for creative design, is durable and rugged, requires little maintenance and adds a look of distinction. Stamped, stencilled, and stained/coloured concrete surfaces work well in outdoor living spaces such as patios and walkways. Decorative sidewalks and driveways add curb appeal and value to homes. We can combine any colour with several different textures to make each project unique, and if you’re not confident with the placing, we can recommend Mid-Canterbury’s top placers to help you create a stunning living environment. Our landscape yard also have bulk supplies of bark, Oamaru stone, sand, gravel and decorative rocks, to add further colour and texture to your design.

In the process... With their growing family, Greg and Rebecca Lambert-Lane have decided to renovate their existing home, rather than sell up and purchase new. They have been in the current home for 5 years now, moving in through extreme conditions of the large snow fall we all remember for causing so many disruptions. When moving in, they realised that the home, only having two bedrooms with a sun room, would eventually become too small for their family, but the location is fantastic and they loved the established landscaping put in place by the previous owner, who was a landscape architect. The arrival of their third child put this into reality a bit faster than they had originally pictured. The home was arriving at the inevitable stage of requiring a fair bit of maintenance, such as a re-roof, so they had to decide between sticking with the home they love, or cutting their ties and moving on. Greg and Rebecca perused the market but didn’t come across any inspirational properties, and it was hard to beat the location they already had, so they made the decision to stay in their current home and renovate. Firstly they consulted with architects, but didn’t find one that they particularly gelled with, so in the end had the confidence to do the design themselves. They had a friend draw up the plans for them, and asked some builders for some advice, and the plans were cemented from there. To complete the building work they selected Justin from Quaid Construction who was really cooperative and helpful during their planning stage. He always gave them a no-nonsense honest answer, and has been really flexible with their children, since the family ng to go! have been living in the house during the majority of the renovation. focal point

Creating your

Whether you have a cohesive room flow or not, remember that finding a focal point should begin by looking at what the room already has to offer. Is your sofa the focal point? Do you have an armoire or a bookcase? What about a collection of candles? You might only have to rearrange furniture to get the right focal point of your room. Use these tips to create a better flow and cleaner lines in your design. 1. Place the sofa on the longest wall of the room; it’s an easy place to establish your focal point. Hanging a large painting or framed mirror above the sofa immediately draws attention to this area. 2. If you don’t want your couch to go directly against the wall, pivot the conversation area into the corner. Place a painted screen at the centre behind the couch so that your focal point can become more inviting and visually more arresting. Add more drama and elegance with a statue or small bust placed in front of the screen. 3. Reinforce the fireplace as a focal point. A large piece of art hung above the mantel, or propped on the mantelpiece if you don’t want it hanging too high, is an ideal way to enhance the fireplace. Keep your accessories simple, and leave the walls on each side of the fireplace free of artwork so as not to distract from it. 4. Place two pairs of throw pillows on the sofa, one pair with their points up, and they will create a vertical line to balance the other pieces of the same height in the room. They will also carry the eye up and away from the heaviness of the sofa. 5. In a bedroom, the bed is almost always the focal point simply because of its size. If you have a simple headboard you may want to hang a wide painting or a trio of framed prints above the bed. A simple or elaborate headboard will serve as a focal point. Or matching end tables with lamps will make the bed seem wider, giving it additional prominence as the focal point. 6. Your dining room table is not a focal point; the focal point must dominate one wall. What will work? A buffet with a large painting, a grouping or a framed mirror above it. If you choose to make your sideboard the focal point, you can use two dining chairs to flank it and make it more important. 7. Collections can be arranged to make them the focal point of a room, but this should always be done with an eye to creating a well-organized display. Remember, whether you choose to use one object or a grouping, place it against the wall if you want to have an effective focal point. 8. If you own a grand piano, no matter how grand it is, it is still a piece of furniture. I’d like to suggest that the only time it should be considered a foal point is in the home of a professional pianist, where all of the furniture is grouped around it. 9. Don’t worry about balancing two focal points in the same room. If you are lucky enough to have both a fireplace and a spectacular view, the view should take precedence.

‘Sticks and stones may break my bones’

but rocks and stones make great landscape materials The use of nature to create a landscape is a pretty natural progression, and little by little people are learning that sometimes the elements that nature offers can enhance the look of their garden to such an extent as to make the difference between a characterless area and a pleasurable place of peace and tranquility. Rocks and stones are good to use because they offer strong statements. You can use them to enhance a chosen theme such as an alpine or mountainous theme, or you can use them as part of Feng Shui to reflect the mountains in nature.

The ideas that can be used in landscaping using rocks and stones are diverse and include: • Water features. • The Rockery • Weed prevention • Pond areas • Pathways • Patios • Features • Stone walling Rocks positioned in water, or in a place where they get the maximum rainfall on them when it rains are really useful tools because all rocks take on a different appearance in the wet, adding subtle colour changes and creating a different textural sense to the garden. Wonderful water features can be made by the use of rocks and stones, coupled with the installation of a water pump. The rocks and stones make the water feature look more natural and can also help the sound quality of the water as it falls. Larger rocks may encourage a slow flow of water that reflects the light and is eye catching, whereas smaller rocks can be used to line the liner that forms the base of a water feature, throwing light and reflected color as the sun hits the water. With water features, stones help tremendously to hide the workings of the pump and to create a natural looking landscape like a cascade or waterfall, and add a wealth of natural landscape to an area that may otherwise have been a dull area of the garden

When forming a pond, one of the most irritating things is to see the plastic that forms the liner. It looks ugly and unnatural and by using rocks and stones around the edges of the pond, you can either form a natural looking edge or carefully choose stones that are flat to create a classic edge to the pond, putting the flat stones in a bed of cement to make them secure so as not to endanger those who step on them. The standing stones of years gone by make impact on the landscape that surrounds them and there is no reason why you cannot copy this idea in your own garden adding feature stones that draw the eye towards them. Here, large stones look really good in the center of a raised border, or can stand alone in the middle of a landscape of grass. Low growing bedding and trailing plants can be offset in a splendid way by placing a few large rocks in the bedding area, at random. If the plants include vines like ivy or creeper, the effect becomes even nicer as the vines partly grow over the large stones, giving it all a very natural appearance. However you use them, rocks and stones can be used really effectively in landscaping and offer a contrast to plants and lawned surfaces. They do not have to be harsh but can be soft and tactile too. Try to source locally and use stones and rocks to enhance your style and theme.

Get berried this summer by growing your own berries! Sweet juicy summer berries are hard to match when it comes to taste and flavour. The joys of picking your own fruit far out weigh the small amount of effort required to produce handfuls of fresh, delicious berries. Spring is the perfect time to plant berries that will be harvested in summer. To get the best berries, start with the right ingredients. Select only healthy strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, blackberry and boysenberry plants from the garden centre. Don’t be tempted to dig up strawberry runners you may find in a friends gardens. These may grow but chances are they won’t produce a bumper crop because berries from older runners tend to have less flavour, vigour and growth. Hence, start fresh plants every year, it is recommended that new strawberry berry plants are bought every two years. No matter what berries you choose to grow, you can plant them in a pot, planter or garden. If space is tight use Haxnicks, berry planters or hanging baskets for strawberries and cranberries. Wine barrels are a good option for

combination berry plantings. Try planting a thornless blackberry in the centre, then three blue berries around that and edge with strawberries for a berry combo that will be as tasty as it is delightful. Whether you are planting in the ground or in pots, you need to plant your new season’s berries into Tui Strawberry Mix as this has all the goodies that berries require to flourish. It provides the perfect base for roots to quickly establish themselves in, and enjoy sustained growth throughout the season. The high level of potassium which is incorporated into the mix is important too as this is the nutrient berries need to produce tasty fruit. The only pre-requisite for berries is the need to be planted in a sunny position, no sun = no flavour. Taller berries require support from the wind as they grow. Strawberries need to be mulched with Pellletised Pea Straw to keep fruit off the soil and stop rot. When your plants start fruiting cover with netting or Haxnicks Net Tunnels to keep birds away. Apply strawberry food once a month to all berries and water your plants regularly throughout summer. To prevent soil or potting mix drying out apply Saturaid around plants. This promotes even water distribution and helps with moisture retention. Harvest once berries are bright red and look ripe, as they tend not to ripen once picked. Remove any blemishes with a soft cloth; avoid washing with water as it can bruise the delicate fruits. Serve at room temperature; cold berries straight from the fridge have less flavour. A bumper berry crop for the kids: Strawberries are a neat way for kids to become interested in gardening. If space is, limited a pot with a few berries in can make a huge difference to kids getting a kick out of growing there own. The Tui NZ Kids Garden

is a great book that will help maintain and develop a young gardener’s enthusiasm and skills in the garden. • Firstly, sit them down and show them the Tui Time Get Berried video at www.tuitime.co.nz This short, informative video shows you how easy it is to get started growing berries. Chances are you may learn a thing or two yourself. While the kids are on this website, they may want to enter the competition to win a strawberry growing pack. Nothing like the thought of wining something to stimulate some interest. • Next, give the child or children a garden spot of their own or a pot or planter that they can decorate and plant and some strawberry or other berry plants in. Encourage them to make scarecrows or hang cds to deter birds. A neat trick to deter birds from eating the strawberries is to paint some stones red and place around the plants, the birds think these are berries, try eating them and become upset and do a angry bird dance which kids love to watch. These painted stones normally deter the birds from returning to the berry patch. • Whatever you do to get kids gardening will be as rewarding for you as it is for them. It is important that the next generation of gardeners know where their food comes from and get started on the growing your own path sooner rather than later.

6 - 13 NOVEMBER 2010 With the Group 1 features on Cup Day now supported by an outstanding programme of rich support Races, Christchurch Casino NZ Trotting Cup Day in 2010 promises to be one of the most memorable for many years. The Canterbury A&P Show, which attracts the week’s biggest crowds, will run from Wednesday 10 to Friday 12 November. The latest in agribusiness will be showcased, with woodchopping, trade exhibits, livestock, demonstrations, competitions, live music and premium food and wine. The Canterbury A&P Show is the premier agricultural event in the country, drawing the largest audience of any single event in the South Island. Attracting on average 110,000 Show visitors, 600 trade exhibitors and over 7000 livestock and feature competition entries, Canterbury hosts New Zealand’s biggest and best A&P Show. “Despite some of the worst weather experienced in over ten years, last year we still managed to maintain our position as the country’s largest Agricultural and Pastoral Show. This year will be no different as we look forward to holding the same successful event that Canterbury has hosted for the past 148 years” commented Show Event Director Rae Finlay. A truly national event and a showcase for international agricultural excellence, the Canterbury A&P Show brings together the best of all things rural, combined with entertainment and commercial exhibits over three days in November. It goes without saying that racing and fashion go hand in hand; primp and preen for the Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup days at Addington Raceway and Riccarton Park Racecourse and show off your loudest hat or highest heels in one of the fashion in the field competitions or one of the fantastic hospitality areas such as Addington’s Lindauer Lawn. The country’s top designers will be on show at Style Christchurch when the latest collections from the likes of Zambesi, Stitch Ministry, Annah Stretton and Aduki take flight in an aviation inspired theatre fashion show. Show us your style at the event or come along to pick up tips on the latest trends for Summer and Autumn 2011. Entry into both fashion competitions is free - with categories ranging from high fashion to the more quirky body art. See which category or prize package interests you and start practicing that pose! Fashionistas will get a helping hand at Ballantynes during October with in-store styling sessions throughout the month. New Zealand Cup and Show Week is an event this city looks forward to and is the ideal way to shake off the winter blues and kick start summer celebrations! The Royal New Zealand Show attracts the week’s biggest crowds and continues to showcase the latest in agribusiness along with perennial favourites from woodchopping and Ballantynes Grand Parade to the socute City Farmyard and thrilling carnival rides. If you need retail therapy it will be on offer at the hundreds of trade exhibits, as will livestock galore, top Kiwi chefs, demonstrations, competitions, live music, and excellent food and wine. The International Rodeo will provide the grand finale to the week when 32 of the world’s best cowboys and cowgirls battle it out in bull riding, saddle bronc and bareback bronc plus an exciting cowgirl barrel racing challenge. Show us your cowboy hat and come along to this wild west spectacular where every ride is a heart-stopping show. When the dust settles and the sun goes down show us your dancing shoes as the city’s bars and restaurants come alive with festival crowds wining and dining to top music and entertainment.

All mod cons at Adams House From wireless internet to a heated swimming pool, Adams House cannot be beaten as one of the best boarding school facilities in the country. However, it is not the bricks and mortar or the facilities they contain which make this Christchurch Boys’ High School hostel so special – it’s the sense of community. Adams House manager Richard Taylor says it’s a real home away from home for the boys who live there. “What is really special is the communal feel the boys develop. They develop a feeling of security which makes them happy and, once they are happy, they develop their relationships and, once they do that, they enjoy living here,” he says. In fact, the only issue is sometimes

getting the boys to go home during the school term at all but, given what’s on offer at Adams House, few could blame therm. As well as broadband internet in every room and wireless internet, (controlled through a Web Marshall security programme) in the main block of the house, students also enjoy a wide variety of meals provided by the house’s own chefs and catering manager. The accommodation itself is also of an extremely high quality, with boarders graduating from rooms for four in their first two years to shared rooms for two and, finally, their own private rooms in Year 13. “Each year group has its own common room, which is the students’ own space outside their rooms so they are not all confined to one area and they also got good quality, almost Hagley Senior College have hotel-standard bathrooms, showers Enrolment Day and toilets, which are modern, clean and efficient,” Richard says. Boarding at Selwyn House Families evaluating boarding as an option for their child face the obvious question of school types. Within the independent school world, small boarding schools are a unique genre providing students and families with the challenges, opportunities and support that can be found only in an inclusive, communal environment. In a small boarding school, such as Selwyn House, students are much more likely to have a varied core group of friends than in a larger school. Students are encouraged to extend themselves in the small boarding school environment, regardless of what year group they are in. Here, connections between individuals centre on the personal relationships that students need to build while living and working in what is essentially an extended family. In a small school, everyone knows everyone – students, teachers, administration and the support staff. All members of the community need to work together to make the boarding school successful. Teachers and friends know and celebrate students’ achievements as well as

support them and, perhaps, work alongside them when necessary. The boarding staff is actively aware of the commitments and demands of the communal living environment and they are ready to help their students and provide support wherever necessary. Parents are an integral part of the connections made, and culture found, in small boarding schools. Academically, small schools frequently communicate informally as well as formally with parents. Ellani Collections is one of the fastest growing branded ranges in Australia and New Zealand. Ellani specialises in sterling silver jewellery with cubic zirconias and semi-precious stones. Available in Ashburton from Time for Diamonds. Sterling silver and 9ct yellow gold, set with one large pear shaped Rutile quartz with red and green Sapphires. A necklace represents feminine beauty and mystique. Its timeless appeal has held the attention of both women, and men, for ages. From Greek mythology to the French Revolution, the necklace has played a major role in cultures worldwide. Archeologists believe the necklace was born during the stone age about 40,000 years before than previously believed. April 2004, scientists were excavating a cave in South Africa discovered forty-one molluscs that may have been strung as neck jewellery about 75,000 years ago. Before this discovery, the oldest known necklace to have been found was about 30,000 B.C. They are made mostly of shells, bones, stones, animal teeth or claws, strung on a thread. Basically the same concept is used today though there are some variations and more ‘precious’ materials. In 2500 B.C. gold was starting to be used in

neck jewellery. Gold neck adornments and chokers have been discovered at the Royal Grave of Ur. They are in what is now known as Iraq. 2000 B.C. was when Sumerian bead neck jewellery started to use alternating patterns of coloured stones, gemstones and metals such as copper or silver. Ancient Egyptian neck jewellery evolved from simple stringed beads to complicated patterns, and include the ‘broad collar’ and pectoral type. They were worn by both sexes, mostly royals and wealthy citizens. They were often buried with their dead owners. During the Classical Greek period from about 480 to 300 B.C. most necklaces were three dimensional pendants. They were mostly in the form of heads, seeds, or acorns. They were suspended from a row of flat elements, usually some type of rosettes. Alexander the Great in 356 - 323 B.C. conquered the Orient. Gold was plentiful throughout the Greek Empire. It was often

used on making in necklaces and other types of jewellery for several centuries. In Ancient Rome the wearing of jewellery was frowned upon. Laws regulated how much gold could be worn by women or buried along with the dead. From about the first century on, Roman Jewellery began to distinguish itself. Gemstones came into use and were usually cut in circles or rectangular shapes. In the end of the second century gold piercing techniques were invented. It produced a lace like quality in gold neck jewellery. The favoured style of the time was a chain of differently coloured gemstones connected by gold links. In the second and third century it became popular to wear multiple necklaces all at the same time. The types of neck jewellery sometimes indicated the level of wealth or class of the wearer. Necklaces were very popular in whatever form could be

made. Over the next few centuries the popularity of wearing of necklaces waned significantly. In the late 14th century necklaces started to regain their popularity due to fashions décolletage. Since then however, necklaces are very popular among all the classes. Necklaces are worn now for a variety of reasons not the least of which personal adornment. Many people wear medals that are religiously significant such as those with images of the Saints or Jesus Christ. Many wear a plain cross while still others will wear a Crucifix which is a cross on which the image of the body of Christ is fastened. It stands to reason that it can be said that necklaces have been and will remain a piece of jewellery that is completely versatile in its design and the intent of the wearer.

The Ultimate

CHRISTMAS PARTY Don’t let your Christmas Party be a ‘Silent Night’ Christmas parties are fun and entertaining celebrations for people of all ages. People look forward to reminiscing with friends and family members and celebrating the joyous season by sharing food and memories. Participating in party activities can create priceless memories sure to last a lifetime. Christmas party games tend to liven the atmosphere and help diffuse awkward silences that sometimes occur when lots of people are together and the conversation starts to become stale. After all, how many times does one enjoy hearing your colleague boast about their nephew’s acceptance into college? In cases where party guests include many who don’t know each other, which at office parties can often include the partners who haven’t met before, Christmas party games are perfect for breaking the silence and encouraging folks to get to know one another.

The Ultimate

CHRISTMAS PARTY

Christmas party games can include games using words, music,

prompts and props, as well as familiar board games, card games and even video games. While many games are available in Christmas formats or editions, any game can be adapted to fit a Christmas party theme. For example, play Charades using only words pertaining to Christmas or Christmas parties. Liven things up with Nintendo Wii sports or dance games by incorporating Christmas-themed prizes. Play a game of “Whose middle name is it?” Co-workers often work side-by-side, yet do not know anything about one another. Have a board with all employees middle names listed next to a letter or number. Have paper and pens nearby with each employees first name listed beside a blank. The guests can try to guess their co-workers middle name and add the letter beside the name on the paper. When everyone has played announce the middle names and the person who has the most correct will win a prize. Fill a large glass decanter with precounted red and green Christmas candies. Leave small slips of paper and pens, as well as an empty box with a slot cut in it, on the same table. Ask guests to guess how many pieces of candy are in the container. The one who guessed the closest number receives a prize, which can even be the container of candy-hence a game and prize for one single effort. Get out the karaoke machine and host your own version of “Christmas Idol.” Decide ahead of time who your judge or judges

will be and have guests perform Christmas songs for prizes. Have a new Christmas CD available for the crowned idol. Deck the halls Besides the food and guests, decorations are definitely an important, but sometimes overlooked, detail when planning a party. Decorations not only brighten up a room, they show your guests that you actually care, and that’s always a good thing. Decorate several small trees with candy canes and chocolate ornaments, and scatter them around the venue. They make a cute looking, tasty wee treat while guests are mingling and chatting. For a centrepiece, begin with a few tree branches. Use several short thin branches and several tall thick branches. Lay on cardboard outside and spray with gold paint and spray glitter, if desired. Stand the branches up in clear glass vases with clear rocks and decorate with red ball ornaments. Use strings of lights, the venue’s fireplace and scented candles as your only lighting to create a more intimate and festive mood. Print short Christmas carols, poems and stories on thick, good-quality parchment paper in a calligraphy font. Place four carols or poems on each page. Fold the pages and tear them apart to give them a rough look, and then decorate the edges with glitter. Scatter these around on tabletops and hang them from doorknobs with ribbon. Guests can take them home as favours, and they look great but cost little to create. Hang stockings already filled with small presents on the back of the chairs to give the illusion that Santa has paid the party a visit. This is a good idea as a different alternative to the often used ‘secret Santa’. Fill green and red coffee mugs with bunches of different coloured candy canes, and place them on the tables, Or fill the mugs with red and green M&Ms.

Breast Cancer Action Month Take Action this October This October the Breast Cancer Foundation is challenging you to TAKE ACTION to raise awareness about breast cancer and to raise funds for their proactive health and wellness programmes.

October is breast cancer awareness month globally. In New Zealand The NZBCF is part of a global movement towards a world without breast cancer and it is time to shift the public focus from awareness to action. They are asking the public to take action against the disease that is the number one cancer killer of New Zealand women. Breast cancer will affect 1 in 9 New Zealand women in their lifetime and more than 2600 are diagnosed with the disease every year. Most poignantly, more than 600 women lose their lives to breast cancer in New Zealand every year. This compares to a death toll of almost 400 New Zealanders who die on our roads each year.

Unique Jewellery 111 Tancred Street Ashburton (03) 307 6663

Join together this October and help to shape a world without breast cancer. The NZBCF is dedicated to fighting against the incidence and effects of breast cancer in our community. The money raised during October will go towards: • Education programmes to promote risk reduction through early detection and positive lifestyle choices • Investments in research and medical support which aim to improve the quality of diagnosis and treatment offered to women with breast cancer • Community outreach programmes that help women return to their normal lives as quickly as possible after treatment. These include Pink Pilates, a personalised therapeutic programme offered to women recovering from breast cancer surgery that aims to rebuild strength and confidence post surgery, and Sweet Louise, a

programme which offers a broad range of support services to provide uplifting experiences and practical help to women coping with treatment and its day-to-day challenges. • Advocacy which focuses on the development of guidelines to improve consistency of care with every aspect of breast cancer • And for women living with life limiting cancer, we look to provide them and their families with the support, comfort and care required to cope better with their treatment and its day-to-day challenges The NZBCF is a national organisation dedicated to improving treatment outcomes for women with breast cancer and supporting those women and their families who live with the disease. It needs your support this October to ensure their programmes can expand and benefit more New Zealanders.

Breastscreen Aotearoa Early detection is your best protection

BreastScreen Aotearoa is a free national breast screening programme for eligible women aged 45 to 69. Mammograms are the only proven way for finding breast cancers early enough to reduce your risk of dying of breast cancer. Regular mammograms reduce the chance of dying from breast cancer among women aged 45-69. But the benefit is greatest for women aged 50-69.

While screening does not stop you getting breast cancer, it does reduce your chances of dying from it. • The risk of breast cancer increases as you get older. Of those women who get breast cancer, three-quarters are 50 years and over. • Most women who develop breast cancer have no close relative with the disease. Even among women with a family history of breast cancer, only a very small number will be at high risk of getting breast cancer.

The mammogram is looking for breast lumps and changes in breast tissue that may develop into problems over time. They can find small lumps or changes that a health care practitioner or woman cannot feel when doing a physical breast examination. Breast lumps or growths can be benign (not cancer) or malignant (cancer). Finding breast cancer early means a woman has a better chance of surviving the disease. There are also more choices for treatment when breast cancer is found early. It also increases the likelihood that surgical options that conserve the breast can be offered. Mammography screening reduces a woman’s risk of dying from breast cancer. One of the reasons it cannot stop every woman with breast cancer from dying is that the cancer may already have been in the body for up to ten years or longer by the time the mammogram detects it. Even when small, a few breast cancers may already have spread to other parts of the body.

October is Breast Cancer Action Month and one of the newest and most fashionable ways to show your support in raising awareness is to be ‘Positively Pink’ and purchase a Pink product from NZBCF sponsors and supporters. Not only is pink a statement, it’s also hugely on trend for spring 2010!

As I pull out my pink GHDs (a BC past fundraiser relic), I’m thinking about how pink is infiltrating fashion this season, and that even includes hair. A bizarre trend that’s popped up is for pink/grey ‘over toned’ hair, Kelly Osbourne is teaming hers with a fifties house wife cropped do and vintagelook wardrobe. Flash-in-the-pan? Maybe, but a great October statement and a fun start to these warmer seasons! Spring is a perfect time to pull out brighter makeup, and fuschia pink lipsticks and cheeks, with the optimism that comes with flowers blooming, and a ‘rosy glow’ will also make a simple outfit pop, or play up a floral print. Check out MAC’s lipstick in “Girl About Town” and “Show Orchid” and Lancome’s Color Fever lipstick in “Rock Chic”. These new pinks are a perfect stand-in for when red just seems too formal or too much, a cheeky way of injecting a bit of femininity. Matched with short sharp pink nails it’s a cheap, easy and fresh update for the season and your wardrobe. Fashion designers are jumping on board to help out and make you look great at the same time with designs that convey the breast cancer awareness message and raise funds for research. In London popstar Kylie Minogue posed for billboards draped in just a sheet, to launch a breast cancer charity campaign for UK retailer Target, aiming to help raise a million pounds and awareness, four years after beating the disease herself after a year of radiotherapy, chemotherapy and a partial mastectomy to remove a malignant tumour. Inside the fashion world I see a different closer view of breast health, working daily with women and their busts of all shapes and sizes. And size does matter. Wires sitting on bust tissue is not good at all, your bra should cup under and around your breast, so if you find yourself yanking your bra down during the day, or ripping it off in pain at night (or in the car on the way home from work…), how about getting a fitting done for October awareness? And treat your self to a new set of lingerie to reward oneself afterwards, of course. Also, give your boobs a break at night, if you need to sleep with support, make it a wirefree bra, crop or singlet with inbuilt shelf, and give the wires a break. So after a winter of hiding away and saving those pennies, treat yourself to something pink and do double the good. You can even get awareness razors. Yes. Gillette Venus’ popular Embrace razor’s purchase will see a 50 cent donation go to the cause, so its time to stock up and look great for the warmer weather ahead!

Your stars,

with Madame Latanya...

October 2010

Aries Mar 21 - Apr 19 Activities pertaining to work and recreation are both equally hectic and demanding, but desired by you. You are in a mood to work hard and sincerely at everything you take on — and the results will be pleasing indeed, to say the least. If you usually are shy, it is a good time to exercise emotional advantage, self-confidence and direct expression of your emotional states. The New Moon on the 7th could help you get a stronger handle on your personal relationships as you’ll be at your most diplomatic helping with any compromising and co-operation that needs to take place in order to strengthen your connection.

Taurus Apr 20 - May 20 You are anxious with taking on an important or aggressive role within an association or relationship. You are on the go in pursuing allies and in the forming of new partnerships. You may even find that you seem to need someone’s help in order to accomplish your objectives. Don’t make any emotional decision based on states of psychological irritability, Taurus. Venus, your chart ruler goes retrograde on the 8th making you open your eyes to symbolic gestures.

Leo July 23 - Aug 22

Cancer June 21 - July 22 Love (and lust) is in the air. It’s now innate for you to turn on the magic without even lifting a finger. You are more playful than usual, and especially magnetic. Depending on your circumstances, a new romance or even a series of romances is quite possible. This harmonious aspect of transiting Mars to Pluto generates an increase of your sexual and vital energy. You’ll be put to the test with the Full Moon of the 23rd when your professional reputation will be on the line. Do you fight or take flight?

This month, you are especially fond of the life of the home and family. You are more receptive and gentle on a romantic level, and tend to be sentimental or nostalgic now. Loyalty and sensitivity in your relationships are more important to you than typically. It is advisable to be prudent in everything related to your sexual life and intimate relationships. Forming a masterplan for the long term and taking things through in stages will give you a better overall picture of the voyage you are about to take.

Libra

Scorpio

Sept 23 - Oct 22 Financial security and enjoyment of the good things in life are important to you, although you also value simple pleasures. The ability to relate well with others might enhance your own personal finances during this period. This is a stable position for love matters and close relationships. You value those who make you feel comfortable, and familiarity is more important to you than someone new. It is necessary to increase your self- esteem, abandon any kind of inhibition complex and allow yourself to be free in your emotional, family and sensuous relationships. When Venus, your chart ruler goes retrograde on the 8th, you’ll find yourself assessing your financial position and eyeing up the value of your possessions to get a clear picture of your overall worth.

Oct 23 - Nov 21

Your physical appearance may be the target of your efforts and you may set out to improve or change your style/ approach.. Avoid being over-ambitious. Take charge of your life, but don’t bully others in the progression! This is an excellent phase for assertiveness and physical liveliness. It is essential to trust your loved ones and at the same time not to be too controlling with them. It is preferable to control yourself, then you will find that the external emotional situations will tone down and progressively balance. From the 23rd, once the Sun moves into your sign and joins Mercury and Venus, you’ll be analysing all of your interactions with x-ray vision to see who is sincere or not.

Aquarius

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19

Recognition, rewards, greater power and prestige, even your assets, property, belongings are enhanced greatly. The time is being truly generous, and you deserve it. Your vision is practical right now, and you want to see tangible results for your efforts. Love relationships require changing or modifying imperfect aspects of our character in order to awaken psychological virtues that up until now had been dormant. Luckily with a little help from the conjunction of Venus and Mars, your social life should pick up fantastically for the first part of the month giving you a schmoozy diversion to lift your spirits.

Jan 20 - Feb 18

There is certain electricity and vibes in the very air at this stage. It is even more apparent after the subdued, low-key activities of the recent past. Therefore, there could also be excitement of a different kind in the starting of a new project. Even some pending matters, long delayed projects that were practically in cold storage, will start up afresh. You brush up skills, so as to help you meet these exciting challenges - not just competently, but head-on! Don’t give so much importance to the size or quantity of your entertainments, since a simple gift in a given moment can have great sentimental value. Feisty Mars makes a powerful connection throughout the month enabling you to put some of your far fangled ideas into action.

Gemini May 21 - June 20 Brilliance, style and a touch of class are your forte now. You will be saying and doing all the right things, handling every job or chore with intensity and skill. This will actually stretch to include your socializing, play and pleasure activities as well. In fact, the two — work and pleasure - come together into a single and harmonious whole. And you’re truly impressive, though work has a slight edge over pleasure. This is a good time to strengthen family relationships and the ties with your loved ones. The stellium of Mercury, Saturn and the Sun offers a glimpse into what could be from the 5th to the 10th when the path you’d like to take becomes more apparent.

Virgo

Aug 23 - Sept 22 Brilliance, style and a touch of class are your forte now. A striking planetary connection between Mars and Uranus allows you to take anything that comes your way from the 15th onward and you’ll easily be able to find solutions to life’s little quandaries.

Sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21 Your job/profession should be energetically satisfying now, but you want more out of life. The reason is - your strong motivation for a better tomorrow in terms of the rest of your life, and for your loved ones. This astrological aspect inclines to generate certain tests, hindrances or concerns in your sensuous relationship, but that is only the principle of a fruitful era of greater emotional and sensuous deepening. An additional connection with Mars for the last half of the month will give you an adrenaline boost making you want to take on several projects at once.

Pisces

Feb 19 - March 20 This is an especially introspective month during which you have the chance to truly uncover your personal strengths and talents. Sincerity and spontaneity in your emotional manifestations are essential for you now. With several positive aspects to Neptune, your planetary ruler this month, you’ll instinctively know you’re on the right path at the right time as you’ll let yourself be led by your instincts. With all the noise going on on the outside, it will be nice to finally reach a state of inner calm and be yourself instead of trying to be what everyone else wants you to be.
