Ashburton Bridge Club Renovation

Bridging the generation gap

“B

ridge, the amazing card game,” is how president of the Ashburton Bridge Club John Shearer describes the ultimate trick-game. In the Ashburton Bridge Clubrooms on Alford Forest Road, the contract duplicate version of bridge is played. John explains the rules as, “You can play with your 13 cards, and you can win, even though you may have had a bad hand all night.” Bridge uses all 52 cards with rankings from the 2 to the Ace. In most versions of the game, the dealer distributes 13 cards to each player, one card at a time, and face down, beginning with the player on their left. Each person attempts to score points by making their bid, or by defeating the opposing partner’s bid. At the end of the play, the side with the most points wins. Bridge is played at many different levels. Some members of the club get the most enjoyment by playing competitively and playing in the many tournaments that are offered around the country. Others prefer to go and enjoy the social aspect of playing with their friends. Bridge is played at the Ashburton Club typically between 7.15pm and 10.30pm on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights, and Wednesday afternoons between 1.15pm and 4.30pm. According to John, the most crowded but most rewarding day to attend is Monday afternoon. “Monday afternoons are sometimes used for new players to ask advice from our senior players on how to improve their bridge or for those who want to sneak in an extra session during the week.” To ensure the game is kept alive with each generation, the club runs lessons each year to help prospective members learn how to play. The programme runs for 12 weeks from 7-9 pm

on a Monday. From next year the course will start on February 14, 2022. “Come along to the lessons and allow us to explain how this all works,” John said. If you play your cards right and are 25 and under – you can travel the world and represent your country after 2 to 5 years of learning the game. “Youth training is available after you complete the lessons,” John said. Bridge is keeping up with the changing times and can even be played online. “During the Covid-19 lockdowns, this proved to be a lifesaver for the older generation,” John said.

Ashburton has approximately 150 members of all ages. “From new mothers and fathers to new great grandmothers and fathers, all sorts walk through the door.” The Ashburton clubrooms are spacious, centrally heated, and contain a full kitchen and bar. The facilities have also been recently renovated by Geoff Read Builders and Joiners. The club is lucky enough to own the clubrooms, which helps keep annual subscription prices down for members. So if you are thinking of taking up a new hobby that keeps your brain active or even if the body has passed the competitive sports stage, this might be the game for you. “We would love you to come along and learn, either with a partner or by yourself. It does take time to learn. However, be warned bridge is addictive!”

The company’s shared vision has raised the cards. Geoff Read Builders have updated the kitchen and bar. The Ashburton clubrooms are spacious and centrally heated. “It has been really good to be able to see the on-site team work in with the club to ensure that their vision of the build was achieved,” Lachlan said. The design intended to modernise the entrance and facilities of the Bridge Club without breaking out of the existing building envelope, ensuring the cost of the alteration was within budget. Geoff Read Builders are most proud of their on-site team for completing the renovation while allowing members to access the playing room so that the club could continue to operate as well as finish the project before the deadline.
