This is a highly sought after area in which to farm both for owner operators and investors. For furniture grey is the new beige By Kim Palmer
W
hich styles and colours will we be seeing in furniture showrooms - and, ultimately, homes - in the months ahead? One reliable barometer is the High Point Market, the giant home furnishings trade show held twice a year in High Point, North Carolina. For insights from the most recent show, we turned to two design pros who were there: Kathy Basil, manager/buyer for Hirshfield’s Design Resource, and Nancy Woodhouse, senior designer, Gabbert’s Design Studio. Here they share what they saw, what they liked and offer a few tips on incorporating new looks into existing decor.
HOTTEST HUES Lilac was in full bloom, according to Basil. “I saw a lot of it in upholstery,” she says. “One pillow showroom had a whole section devoted to lavender and mauve-y colours. It felt fresh and pretty.” Is this a flashback to the mauve that dominated colour palettes during the 1980s? “It’s not as onedimensional as that,” says
Basil. “That mauve was depressing. This is a little more elegant, a little more blue. It almost rides on being a neutral.” On furniture, Basil saw lilac paired with rich dark wood finishes, clear acrylic and white - but not with medium-toned wood, she says: “It wouldn’t look good.” Purples are popular, Woodhouse agreed, but they aren’t the only colour story. She also noticed a lot of Chinese red (a bright shade with a hint of orange), deep blues inspired by peacock feathers, punches of chrome yellow and that other ‘80s favourite: grey. “Grey has become the new neutral, replacing beige tones,” she says.
Woodhouse says.
1960's FLASHBACKS The Mad Men influence continues, with many furniture styles that evoke the swinging ‘60s. Prints are big and bold, especially on chairs, ” where “statement fabrics” are the look du jour. Think big butterflies, oversized florals and Asian-inspired dragons, just a few of the examples Woodhouse spotted. “Prints are blown up to a bigger scale,” she says.
Today’s greys are warm (almost taupe), which makes them easier to incorporate into decor than cooler shades of grey, she says: “It’s more user-friendly.”
Other ‘60s influences include bold geometric patterns, in both ing n s, s, upholstery and wall coverings, cut-velvet fabrics, modularr furniture and Lucite.
Although grey’s rise has been building for several seasons, it shows no signs of waning.
“Lucite’s making a big comeback,” Woodhouse says.
“Grey is here to stay for a long time,”
She saw it combined with traditional elements, such as a Lucite coffee table paired with a classic wing chair, and animal-print upholstery with Lucite legs. Other retro furniture details include tufting, channel-quilting, contrast cording,
bu b utt t on ons s buttons a an nd na ail ilhe he h ead ads. s.. and nailheads.
METAL OF THE MOMENT All that glitters is now gold. “Gold was everywhere,” Basil says. “We heard a couple of markets ago that gold was coming back, but this market, boom!” She saw gold dominating light fixtures and furniture hardware, in both shiny and brushed finishes, overtaking pewter and brushed nickel. One of her favourite pieces was a decorative seashell with a natural heavily textured exterior and a shiny gold-leaf interior: “That juxtaposition of rough organic

with gold is just beautiful.”
- which indicates Moroccan style will be around for a while.
Gold also re-entered the palette for fabrics, in a golden camel hue.
ROPECHIC CHIC ROPE
“It’s a way to keep your grey and add a new twist, warming it up and adding another dimension,” Basil says.
Rugged rope was a busy multitasker at market, according to Basil.
FINISHING TOUCHES
FINISHING TOUCHES
Painted finishes, from formal to casual, are having a big impact on furniture, Woodhouse says. She saw everything from white-washed, grey-washed and metallic finishes, to painted special effects, such as harlequin patterns, flowers and even lace. Customisation options are increasing, making it possible to take a traditional piece, such as a bombe chest, and give it a fresh, fun hue of your choosing - even to match a favourite paint colour. “More and more (furniture) companies have that capability,” she says.
“We saw it all over the place. I saw a lot of showrooms where they hung (light) fixtures with thick rope. That’s something new.” She also noticed a rope ship’s ladder hung in a showroom, its wooden treads repurposed as shelving. “It’s almost a ‘70s feeling of macrame,” she says. “But you have to be careful with rope. Skinny and tiny looks cheap, while thick and heavy looks good.”
RUNWAY LIVING ROOM RUNWAY TO TO LIVING ROOM Woodhouse was struck by how quickly fashion trends are moving from the runway into home decor.
MOROCCAN INFLUENCES Moroccan-inspired patterns have been appearing on fabrics, rugs and wall coverings for several seasons, Basil said, but now the signature pointed arch shape of Moorish architecture is making its way into furniture pieces, such as upholstered headboards. “That’s an investment,” she says
“It used to be that home fashion followed apparel, and it used to take about a year,” she says. “Now it’s just a couple of months.” One example is bright chrome yellow as an accent colour. “It just came into stores in fashion, now we’re seeing walls painted that colour, and big pieces done in that colour.” That’s good news for those who like to stay on top of trends. “There’s more instant gratification,” she says.

Working in perfect harmony When building or renovating a home, honest collaboration between you, your interior designer and architect will manifest the best results, says interior and fabric expert Rebecca Bowering WE'VE had to say goodbye to our gorgeous showroom in Christchurch. We loved it, but damage from the earthquakes meant we had to say farewell. It was a sad day, but we've now moved into a new building. Fabulous concrete, glass, sunny and bright. Bring your interior design consultant on board early so they understand what you and the architect are trying to achieve. Often the architect's lines are vitally important for the final look and the last thing he envisages is fussy curtains or curtain track systems that cover impor-

Conversely your interior designer will give consideration at the planning stage for how blinds or curtains are to be hung, where the tracks or rods are best placed and where enough wall space needs to be allowed for the curtains to stack back without masking the view or natural light.

The secret to summer splendo
Green leaves, bright owers and a bountiful harvest are some of the pleasures received from successful summer gardening, but as the heat will continue to intensify over the coming months, there’s maintenance to be done to keep your garden glowing. Your summer garden will need more care and maintenance than during other months, as rapid growth will demand attention to watering, weeding, feeding and spraying. The heat from the sun, combined with strong nor’ West
winds, can rapidly dry out soil, causing plants to wilt and die. If you have planted a variety of owers or fruit and vegetables into pots, baskets or other containers, daily watering will ensure the plant remains hydrated. Consider a quality liquid fertiliser once per week to keep the plant nourished, and mix water conservation crystals into the potting mix to help retain moisture in the soil. A good way to add water-saving crystals into your soil is to pre-soak them in water ďŹ rst, so they are already moisture-laden.
Then dig them into the soil. Never put dry crystals on the top of your soil, as all they will do is suck the moisture from the soil, achieving the opposite of what they are supposed to do. Place mulch around the base of perennials, trees and shrubs to help retain moisture in the soil, and water regularly, ensuring good saturation deep into the soil. By watering too shallow, roots are encouraged to grow toward the surface to ďŹ ght for water, which can lead to increased damage in
challenging conditions. Push your ďŹ nger through the ground cover as a tester. If the soil below still feels dry, it’s an indication it needs more saturation. Mulch or ground cover is fantastic for the health of the soil during the hotter months, the worms, organic matter and microorganisms in your soil will thank you for the cover. Add a good compost around vegetable plants to help retain soil health and moisture also. In patches where the vegetable garden is looking bare from harvested bounty, it’s not too late to sow more seeds to keep the produce growing. Some types of lettuces do well when planted in January and February, as do radishes and some winter onions. When planting vulnerable seedlings, consider investing in some shade cloth to protect from the sun, especially during excessively hot days. When watering, the best time is in the morning, before 10am, or in the late afternoon, after 5pm. This will give your plants and lawn more opportunity to absorb moisture before it is evaporated by the sun and wind. Lawns can be severely traumatised during the summer months, and can quickly turn from a lush green to a prickly brown. To keep your lawn looking fresh, aim to water for a minimum of two hours, every third day, by a well-saturating sprinkler or irrigation system. You should aim for one or two saturating water periods per week instead of multiple shallow watering, to encourage deeper rot growth. Take

into account any rain fall received, as ideally your lawn will want approx. 4cm of water per week. Water after 5pm for maximum effectiveness, and don’t cut the lawn too short. We often forget that grass needs nutrients as much as our vegetables and owers, so for optimum lawn health, consult your local lawn expert on an effective fertilisation plan over the summer. Onehunga weed and other nasty prickles can sprout quickly during summer, so consult with your trusted nursery for a prickle spray that will best suit your lawn. Depending on your owering rate, you may start to notice an increasing amount of dead owers. Be active in cutting these away, to encourage a new ourish of owers before the season ends. If the lavender is almost ďŹ nished owering, the shoots should be reduced by approximately one third. This will ensure the plant doesn’t put too much effort into seed generation, to encourage the plant to bloom strongly the following season. Lastly, don’t forget to look after yourself while tending to your beautiful garden, as you are as susceptible to sun damage as your owers. Where possible, try and tend to your garden and lawn as close to sunrise and sunset as possible, avoiding the heat of the day. Wear UV resistant clothing, a sunhat and sun glasses, wear sunscreen and remember to drink plenty of water. Enjoy the colour, fragrance and beauty of your glorious summer garden.

Keep the look rustic by using medieval style brick and follow inspiration from Hollywood designer, Tobi Tobin. The ground covering was achieved with a mixture of sand and granite, while the rustic candle-lit chandelier is constructed amongst the trees using a pulley and rope system for ease of lighting. Choose weather-treated furniture and adorn with soft cotton cushions and throws, which can easily be scooped up and stored indoors when not in use. Add finishing touches to suit your theme, such as goblets to enhance a medieval feel. (Image from www.housebeautiful.com)
You don’t need to live beside the beach to feel the sand beneath your toes. Create a backyard beach which is as simple as building a large sand pit. Adorn with rustic beach-inspired furniture, use drift wood for an interesting designer art feature, and for the ultimate in relaxation, string up a hammock. Use large old-fashioned jars filled with shells and colourful stones as a table centerpiece, and make your own candles using larger shells to hold the wax. Sometimes the ultimate relaxation area outdoors can be as simple as a comfortable seat tucked away in an enchanting area of the garden. You are only limited by your own imagination. Fill with dreamy cotton-white flowers or go crazy with bursts of colour like a rainbow. Consider a calming fragrance like lavender, or plant herbs to evoke memories. Style with an outdoors chaise lounge adorned with soft pillows to make you feel like you’re snuggled in your bedroom. Hang a gentle wind chime nearby or consider the addition of a water feature to complement the relaxing ambience. Light up your backyard with a range of solar-inspired innovation, to make an ordinary gazebo feel like a magical paradise. For a special occasion or an event, feature lighting can turn the most ordinary of outdoor furniture into a glam arena. Take an ordinary gazebo and outdoor furniture setting as the entertaining spot for the event. Create a lighted pathway using solar lamps, and then adorn your gazebo with solar lanterns or fairy lights. Surround the gazebo sides in pot plants of differing sizes, and use small feature lights in the pots to highlight their texture. Mood lighting can even be achieved by part-filling old jars with sand or pebbles, and inserting a candle. Place the jars around the area you wish to illuminate, or hang from differing heights to create floating lights. Break away from tradition and create the outdoors you would like to live in. There’s far more to your back yard than a deck and barbeque.
