Ashburton’s local Milka-Ware supplier is located with Cullimore Engineering on South Street, combining engineering prowess with technologically advanced dairy products. It is the only supplier of the popular Milka-Ware Total Dairy Systems brand milking plant and consumable products, and is the creator of the innovative CEL wireless backing gate.

Company directors Luke Maginness and Kevin and Ian Cullimore have more than 70 years combined engineering experience, and can offer dairy farmers extensive products and services to enhance their operation.

In 2008 a client approached Cullimore Engineering to build a backing gate. The brief was that it could span 17 metres and not have any troublesome cables running down the yard.

Ian and Kevin Cullimore set about designing a backing gate that had a light-weight frame that utilises a parabola curve to enhance the frame, making it extremely robust.

The gate would run from solar technology, which had been used on earlier projects, along with a radio control unit. This would allow them

to eliminate any cables along the yard making it completely wireless.

The finished product is now a state-of-the-art, market-leading dairy backing gate.

Another important feature is that the Cullimore Engineering Limited (CEL) wireless backing gate operates on a low voltage 24 Vdc system. This is far safer than conventional backing gates and eliminates stray voltage caused by a backing gate which can cause major issues for your cows.

Two large batteries are charged by solar panels which even after a week or more of overcast conditions will still operate at full potential.

Keeping further safety in mind, Cullimore Engineering is developing a load sensing function, which will detect when a cow is in front of the gate. Safety guards which hook around the top rail of the fence make it almost impossible for it to become derailed. A buzzer will also activate while moving and makes a different sound depending on which direction the gate is travelling in.

D&E’s proud history and exciting future Drummond and Etheridge Ltd was formed in 1933 by Bob Drummond and Arthur Etheridge.

Since then it has grown from a general repair garage to a driving force in the agricultural and automotive industry throughout the central South Island.

The D&E’s Moore Street site in Ashburton was home to the John Deere side of the business which moved to the northern end of East Street in 2010. Managing Director Brent Christie was born into the electrical trade, and started learning about wiring and current from a young age. His father Les started Christie Electrical back in 1980, and Brent was keen to absorb his dad’s knowledge and expertise. In 1989 Les and Brent enrolled in a course at Christchurch Polytechnic to learn about a new electrical control system called a programmable logic controller (PLC). The PLC is a digital computer used for automation of electromechanical processes, such as control of machinery on factory assembly lines. PLCs are used in many industries and machines, but in the late eighties, they were relatively new in the industry, and the demand was unknown.

Les and Brent were curious to learn more, and before the end of the course that they were on, they had already installed their first PLC. One of the earlier PLC’s that Les and Brent installed in 1990 was at Five Star Beef in Wakanui. The PLC was installed to control the grain intake and handling system. More than twenty years later, that same PLC is still in operation today.

Brent was keen to expand his knowledge and experience within this technical industry, and spent three years in Australia working on large projects and partaking in further training.

Control systems are also making a move into the residential scene, with security, light and entertainment systems more often becoming operated from a PLC system. Rainer Irrigation cut its teeth with the design and manufacture of the famous RotoRainer. This leading boom irrigator is a familiar sight on many farms around the district and has been for over 30 years. These reliable workhorses have played a major role in making Mid Canterbury the farming hub it is today.

There are over 4500 RotoRainers, and counting, of various models around the country.

Every winter many owners of older RotoRainers are organising to have them brought back to the factory for a full recondition. They are fully stripped, checked, serviced, painted and fitted with any additions as sought by the customer. They then roll out of the factory looking the same way they did many years prior. There will always be an application for the RotoRainer and we are constantly looking at ways to increase efficiency and performance.

Rainer Irrigation’s latest creation is the PW100 gun irrigator, designed and manufactured in house by the team at the Ashburton factory. Capable of 700m runs at low pressures, this machine can work in conjunction with pivot systems. The introduction of the PW100 means Rainer has every irrigation option covered. Rainer complements this part of their business well by being the distributor of Angus Layflat hose and Trailco irrigators and fittings.

With the development of technology and efficiency demands, came the introduction of centre pivot and lateral irrigation. Rainer Irrigation adapted to incorporate this and started a pivot division 10 years ago. They are now the importer and distributor of Zimmatic Centre Pivots and laterals. Managing director Gavin Briggs said: “We have been working with Zimmatic for about five years now; in that time we have found them to be very easy to deal with. They are at the leading edge of research and development in the irrigation industry so we see a lot of options to suit any application.” Variable rate irrigation is a developing market and more and more people are opting for this level of efficiency.

Rainer Irrigation has several in-house build crews which are responsible for the installation of new pivots and laterals. GPS guided systems are becoming more and more popular with Rainer Irrigation leading the way in New Zealand with the implementation of this technology. It has a separate service team responsible for breakdowns and winter servicing. These crews cover almost every corner of the South Island from the West Coast to Southland.

Rainer Irrigation’s experienced pivot service manager, Chris Tull, said it repairs and maintains several different pivot makes but find Zimmatic to be the most reliable.

“We get great support from the manufacturers and are kept up to speed with the changing technology. We hold an extensive stock of parts in house and have a team of experienced technicians. With our resources we can really minimise downtime”.

Back-up service is a big part of Rainer Irrigation’s operation with a fleet of 60 vehicles including hiabs, diggers, telelifters and fully equipped service trucks. They provide repairs and maintenance for RotoRainers, mainline, centre pivots, pumps, effluent systems and electrical gear so clients can be confident they are getting looked after during the busy irrigation season. Having the luxury of combining resources across the board, saves the client hassle, time and money co-ordinating another company to work on the job.

Many of the Rainer Irrigation team come from a farming background so know the day-to-day pressures of running a farm which has to carry on regardless of breakdowns.

Staff see it as their responsibility to help the farmer get up and running as quickly and efficiently as possible. The service teams travel the length of the island every winter performing maintenance checks to help minimise equipment breakdown for clients during the irrigation season. which now has six members including department manager Scott Ashdowne, three field electricians (one of which is an electrical inspector) one specialist switchboard builder and an apprentice, all of which are specifically trained in the irrigation industry.

“For efficiency reasons, we are pushing for more multi-pump systems rather than single large pumps. This type of system is more energy efficient, using the least amount of KWs as the demand varies as well as having back-up in the event of pump failure,” Scott said.

Our electrical department has developed Smart Pumping Software utilising our Datalogger as a dual controller logging flow as per Ecan’s requirements as well as VSD control and pump cascading. This type of cascading system allows us to have a constant pressure system but keeping under the requirements of the network providers in regards to the Harmonic issue.

Many owners of older systems are opting to retro fit this new technology to their existing VSD systems for better and smoother control of their pumping system. This department means Rainer Irrigation can take care of its clients from the power pole to the irrigator.

Effluent has been a big part of Rainer Irrigation’s service for many years. It has been manufacturing the Briggs model 10 and 15 effluent spreaders for decades, with over 3000 having been sold. These units are still the preferred way of spreading effluent for many farm owners, from one end of New Zealand to the other and across the globe.

With pivot irrigation and the tightened regulations from Ecan, Rainer Irrigation has developed its effluent department to adopt these changes and can supply, install and service a wide range of effluent equipment and dispersal options.

This 19 span centre pivot with Z arm has recently been installed by Rainer Irrigation at Norvo Holdings, Winslow.

“Pivot irrigation has added a whole new dimension to effluent disposal. We have VRI (Variable Rate Irrigation) as a tool so placement of effluent can be guaranteed to ensure regulations are met as per governing councils. Each system is designed and tailored for our clients as not everybody is the same. Emphasis is on simplicity and reliability,” Gavin said.

Rainer Irrigation is heavily involved with the supply, installation and verification of flow meters. It imports its own flowmeter and supplies its own datalogger, which it guarantees will fulfil customer needs. ECan has advised that the deadline for the implementation of water meters on water takes of 20L/s or over will be November 10, 2012. Rainer Irrigation has a team devoted to pumps and flowmeters led by pump manager Matthew Hancox. He has assigned an experienced team solely for the installation and verification of the flowmeters to ensure clients comply and meet this deadline. Matt and his team have a great deal of knowledge of pumps including submersible pumps, surface pumps, effluent pumps, domestic pumps and pressure systems.

With all new irrigation systems the focus is on efficiency. The design team at Rainer Irrigation has five members who use computer software to hydraulically design and analyse projects to suit the clients’ needs and maximise efficiency whether it be irrigation, stockwater, effluent or sprinklers. They also have the trained staff in house to perform efficiency evaluations on irrigation systems to monitor and improve performance. In a few weeks’ time Rainer Irrigation will be attending the New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays which are held each year at the Mystery Creek Event Centre, just outside Hamilton. This is the largest agribusiness exhibition in the Southern Hemisphere with over 1000 exhibitors displaying their products. The company has been a familiar face at this event for 23 years.

Pluck’s Engineering was forged, quite literally, from a small workshop located on Railway Terrace in Rakaia. A dirt floor, drafty iron walls and a seething furnace rang to the sound of metal striking metal as an array of farm machinery was manufactured or repaired. Two management systems that Pluck’s is currently utilising is the theory of constraints, and lean manufacturing. Through lean manufacturing the business has developed systems that enable it to only manufacture what is required, rather than making excess items for stock, while still maintaining an excellent service.

Everything has its correct place and is labelled according to where items should be. This clean and well organised environment has increased productivity and reduced stress levels for employees.

The system that Pluck’s are most recognised for nationally and internationally is its dairy effluent system, a combination of separate innovations which can be used individually or together to manage effluent from storage to spread, keeping the entire process clean, efficient, cost effective and environmentally sound.

The process starts with the revolutionary Enviro Saucer, originally invented by Neil’s father, which is the primary storage component for the effluent. A small model stirrer blends the effluent.

The blended effluent is then pumped into the screening plant, where Pluck’s revolutionary Rotary Screen sifts the rubbish out, allowing only pure effluent to pass to the catchment pond ready for irrigation. As with all items developed by Pluck’s it has also been developed as energy efficient as possible, running off a tiny 0.40kw of power, and it is maintenance-free and self-cleaning. The effluent is then delivered into a second catchment pond, with a larger model stirrer, which keeps the effluent in suspension making it biologically active.

This system is complete when used in conjunction with the Pluck’s patented LP35E Effluent Irrigator, the most accurate and even spreading effluent irrigator available in New Zealand. Neil is excited about the future of Pluck’s Engineering, whose innovation is helping the farming community, the environment and the broader community. The passion behind the environmentally friendly effluent system stems from Neil’s natural love of the environment. He was one of two people to develop the Rakaia recycling plant which has now been running for 12 years. He believes that you can’t keep taking from nature without giving back, which is a theory he runs his business on.

Seven years ago, Ed Harrison saw that farms and industry needed a new way to house and dispense diesel. With his experience in the farming industry, Ed had an insight into the problems farmers had storing diesel. Ed’s idea about developing a diesel tank that was completely bunded and self contained came about after the introduction of the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Act 1996.

Substandard facilities can become contaminated with condensation, rust or the diesel bug. This contaminated fuel can result in vehicle and machinery failures, costing thousands in downtime and repairs. Fuel contamination is the most common cause of fuel injection system failure. Ed and his wife Leah started Fuel Storage Systems Ltd, and together with local plastics manufacturer RX Plastics, they developed a new and innovative diesel storage facility for farming and industry, called the Sebco Diesel Station. Sebco Diesel Stations are bunded tanks that house diesel in an insulated clean environment that virtually eliminates

The Sebco tanks are manufactured to an Environmental Protection Authority’s HSNO (Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act) Approved Code of Practice and are the only such units on the New Zealand market that comply under these tough requirements.

Sebco was launched on the New Zealand market in 2007 and has since become a market leader for fuel storage and dispensing in New Zealand. Since their launch Sebco tanks have won many awards for their innovation. Fuel Storage Systems Ltd won the Small Business and Supreme Business awards in the 2009 Ashburton Business Awards.

Over the past five years the Sebco range of products has grown considerably to include various sizes of diesel stations, transportable tanks for the back of utes, tanks for storage and dispensing of diesel exhaust fluid (AdBlue) for new SCR engines, and waste oil recovery units.

Sebco tanks can be found in use all over New Zealand, and for the past three years Sebco tanks have also been and continue to be exported to Australia.

This act replaced the Dangerous Goods Act and it came fully into effect in 2006. The act covered all businesses that store, use or manufacture hazardous substances, such as diesel fuel. Ed realised that many farmers could not comply, as a lot of existing tanks on farms were old and had not been upgraded because there was not a better solution on the market.

Ed also knew that diesel engines and their fuel injection systems had undergone many technical

condensation and as they are not steel, no rotting or rusting occurs. Sebco Diesel Stations provide a sterile environment for fuel, are safe and secure to operate and help protect our clean green environments from spills.

The award ceremony was held in Hamilton on April 13 and attended by Dairy Technician Manager Damian Perriton. The high standards that Stockers produce was recognised in the six awards that returned to Ashburton.

They received the Largest Growth in Capital for Australasia in the 2011 year, were awarded for their dedication to achieving Professionalism towards Milfos Brand Standards, an excellence award in

Automation Installation for Dean McConnell’s Dataflow Shed, and made it into the final three for the Supreme Dealership Award which they have won twice previously.

Smith Attachments Ltd: Keeping New Zealand in tow In the early 1970s, Smith Attachments was developed as a part-time venture

by Ashburton based engineer, Ian Smith.

Producing much needed accessories for farm bikes-like carriers, handlebar protectors, tow bars and trailers – he created a niche market that saw Smith Attachments grow into a thriving business.

Three wheeler bikes that were to become a “farmer’s best friend” emerged soon after, however they lacked stability, and any protection to the front of the bike.

Mismanaged three wheelers took a beating and Smith Attachments took charge to design prototype bull bars. In 1980, their workshop trebled in size, and constant improvements were made, including the purchase of a tube bender to increase speed and quality of production. Enter the four-wheeler market in the late 1980s and Smith Attachments ATV accessories were in demand.

Current Director, Ray McCormick joined forces with Ian Smith in 1980 and they ran a quality driven enterprise together, until Smith's retirement in 1999. For the past 13 years, Smith Attachments, under the directorship of Ray and Pam McCormick, has continued to provide a majority of ATV bullbars and mudflap kits into Australasia, as well as meeting the a demand for ATV trailers, stock crates, handlebar protectors and carriers throughout New Zealand.

Industrial Powerhouse Growing seeds for the world When Ross Smith, then working for Elders, went to Bangkok in the late eighties to sell marrowfat peas, he saw some interesting vegetables growing and organised to send some of the seed back home to grow in his garden. Unfortunately they didn’t develop into the luscious vegetables he had seen in Asia; however they did seed quickly. That was the start of an idea that grew, as he anticipated a niche market for such seeds to be grown locally and exported.

Smith Seeds has developed from a two-man operation to a successful company now employing nine staff. They grow seeds throughout New Zealand and have up to 150 growers on their books at any one time, with each farmer sowing areas from four to twenty hectares of seeds.

Elders stopped trade in the late eighties and their subsidiary Holder and Tolley, for whom Ross was then national manager, consolidated their operations immediately. It was the perfect time for the enthusiastic Ross Smith to make his mark, and so in 1990 Smith Seeds was opened in Ashburton. It was the first company in Mid Canterbury to specialize in Asian vegetable seed production.

Essentially the overseas merchant will supply stock seeds which are then grown here to produce more of that variety, and then the resulting large crop is shipped back to the customer. This may seem unproductive, until some facts are known: New Zealand’s temperate climate is ideal for the propagation of seeds. However we can’t grow the Asian vegetables well, because of the difference in growing temperatures, humidity and much stronger light intensity. All these factors encourage the plants to go to seed rather than grow.

The Invercargill-based velodrome has become a national landmark and enjoys a growing international reputation. It also earned us the Registered Master Builders Tourism and Leisure Commercial Project Award for 2007.

"The accuracy and precision with which the structure was built is testament to the team's skill," the Registered Master Builders Competition committee judges said.

The Velodrome's unique roof design comprised of 13 rafter trusses and were all manufactured in-house by Calder Stewart's Steel Division.

The complex was fitted with Calder Stewart's Mega 5 roofing product line to form a canopy that covers four indoor multipurpose courts.

The 250m indoor wooden track utilised specialty timber imported from the Siberian region.

Officially opened on May 26, 2006, by Prime Minister Helen Clark, this 57-week $8 million construction project came in on budget.

David Clark is an arable farmer, growing cereals, peas, ryegrass, clover and vegetable seeds as well as farming breeding ewes and fattening trading lambs.

He purchased a P-D series six metre drill from Allen Custom Drills which was delivered in February.

When considering where to purchase a new drill, ultimately he chose Allen Custom Drills.

“We looked closely at all of the European air drills and chose the Allen drill primarily because of its very robust construction. The pricing of this drill was also more than competitive with imported alternatives,” David said.

The strength, quality and performance of the drill have exceeded David’s expectations.

“The strength of the frame is outstanding. The rubber block oscillation on the coulters means that there is no mechanical connection between the ground and the frame and we think that will greatly reduce the maintenance costs of the drill.

“Being equipped with an RDS electronic controller and Accord electric feed rollers has meant that I can calibrate the drill in the shed and once the controller has determined the density of the seed, the application rate can be altered from the cab. We are operating this drill on a tractor with RTK Auto Steer so we know exactly how big the field is and this has eliminated any overlap so when used in conjunction with the RDS controller which is so accurate, we can precisely apply the amount of seed that is required for that field. As a example, in sowing new ryegrass seed crops this autumn in 25ha paddocks that were allocated 250kg of seed, we were consistently finishing these fields with 4 or 5 kg of seed left.

“The manufacturing quality is very good, all plates are CNC profile cut, the frame and fittings are square and well laid out and the paint quality is excellent. This is a very professional product that in my view is the equal of any imported machine,” David said.

Overall David found his experience with Allen Custom Drills to be excellent, exceeding his customer service and performance expectations.

“Craig and his team have been fantastic to deal with, and were very collaborative during the design phase and several of our suggestions were incorporated into the final product. The drill was on time, on budget and has exceeded our expectations. We are extremely pleased with the machine and the service provided by Craig Allen.”
