Post-quake economy given shot in the arm Agricultural Field Days | Farming for the future | Lincoln | 30 March - 1 April 2011 Canterbury’s post-quake economy will be given a shot in the arm when the South Island Agricultural Field Days get under way next week. The three-day event showcases the latest farm machinery, equipment and technology and this year will play an important step in helping Christchurch back on its feet after the deadly 6.3 quake on February 22. Field days spokesman Errol Costello, of Lincoln University, said it was important the event proceed to restore normalcy to the region. The field days are held every two years, and the 2011 event marks its 60th year. “Canterbury needs to get its economy going again. No lack of respect for those who died in the quake, but this event needs to happen if we are going to rebuild Christchurch. “The main business in the region is farming and the second biggest business is tourism, and the third is education. We need to get business in the district under way again to generate income to rebuild Christchurch, and the field days are part of the farming scene.” The Lincoln field days site has been unaffected by the Christchurch quake, and any indirect spin-off from the subsequent earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The field days themselves are often seen as a barometer of how the primary sector is faring. In 2009, there was cautious optimism, despite a global credit crisis. Mr Costello said farmers would be coming to the 2011 event in a positive mood, buoyed by good dairy and lamb prices. “Farmers are like gold miners, they will never say if they are doing well. But they will be willing to spend money, with a little encouragement and the right price.” Some 25,000 people are expected to visit the field days from March 30-April 1. Mr Costello said the site was compact, and the average farmer spent a day covering most of the 300
exhibits, checking out demonstrations and deals, and catching up with farming friends and neighbours. The main aim of the field days is to give farmers and others in the rural sector the opportunity to see the latest in agricultural machinery and services that are available on the market, particularly home grown products. It is the only agricultural show in New Zealand to feature side-by-side demonstrations, with 80-100 tractors, headers, mowers, seed drills and other machines being put through their paces each day. The event covers seven hectares that is part of the Lincoln University Farm. The event has been running every second year since 1951 when it was held at Motukarara. Mr Costello said the annual Agri-Innovation awards were hotly contested. The awards are in three classes: • Kiwi made farm equipment • Imported farm equipment • Farm aids/tools and farm inventions. A prize of $250 prize is also given to the best large exhibit and the best small exhibit. SIAFD also gives experience in leadership and managerial skills to senior members of Young Farmers in the Christchurch District. The committee, chaired by Hamish Maginness, has 26 members and is an incorporated society. All funds generated are used for educational scholarships for young farmers plus a donation to Young Farmers national office. The field days theme is farming for the future, with exhibitors providing the latest research and information so agri-businesses can continue to sustain the world’s growing population while reducing their environmental footprint.

Vitec is a well established New Zealand animal nutrition company servicing both the ruminant and monogastric agricultural sectors, and was acquired by the northern hemisphere Lallemand group in 2008. Lallemand is one of the world’s largest producers of yeast and bacteria for use in animal and human nutrition, wine-making, baking and bio-ethanol production. The company’s growth in animal nutrition has seen a focus on developing a range of natural, biological products, providing technical solutions which improve forage quality, animal performance and animal health - products whose performance has been scientifically proven in extensive farm scale trials conducted in over 15 countries. One such example is Lallemand’s discovery of a now patented strain of bacteria, Lactobacillus buchneri NCIMB 40788, which is utilised to great effect in the Lalsil range of crop specific silage inoculants such as Lalsil Maize, Lalsil Wholecrop and Lalsil Dry. This bacteria has a unique effect in creating conditions which inhibit the growth of moulds and yeasts – an important factor at feed out, where aerobic stability is so important. Unstable silages can be unpalatable, may develop moulds and mycotoxins and reduce dry matter intakes - resulting in reduced production and poor animal health. Once the supply of winter forage has been accounted for, thoughts turn to calving. The transition phase from pre-calving to lactation is probably the most critical in the lifecycle of the dairy cow. Metabolic disease associated with calcium mobilization can cause extreme stress to both animal and farm staff. Vitec`s CLOSE-UP Hy-D® offers a simple solution formulated to stimulate hormone activity,
CLOSE-UP Hy-D® aids in mobilisation of calcium reserves, and is fed for 14 days prior to calving. We all know that rearing calves can bring its challenges – particularly if there has been a history of coccidiosis; microscopic single cell parasites of the Eimera species cause damage to the cell wall of the intestine, reducing efficiency of digestion and subsequent animal performance. Traditionally treatment has been via a coccidiostat in the calf meal – however the young calf is predominantly reliant on liquid milk for its nutrients, with limited intake of calf meal, which means that until the calf is 4-5 weeks old, it is not eating enough of the dry feed to protect itself. The answer is to use a liquid coccidiostat, enhanced with immunity boosting vitamins - which can be added to milk from 2 days of age – Calf Vigor from Vitec. For more information on how Vitec can help improve your herd’s health, visit us on stand C51 at Lincoln Field Days.

HE ASKED FOR IT Graham Barlow: Waikato. Herd size 350.
When Graham upgraded to a Protrack system in his herringbone shed, he knew he was getting an awesome piece of farm automation equipment, what he didn’t realise was that it was also the best piece of multisport equipment he’d ever bought. He reckons that the time he used to spend in the shed is far better spent clocking up the miles doing what he loves; training for, and competing in multisport events. And now, with the time he’s saved, he can do more of it than ever. You may not be as mad as Graham, but we’re sure you will be able to think of something to do with the time a Protrack system can save you.
To find out more about how Protrack can help make your life easier, call 0508 Protrack or contact your LIC District Manager.

Spectacular Demonstration Agricultural Field Days | Farming for the future | Lincoln | 30 March - 1 April 2011 It is 60 years since aerial top-dressing featured in a spectacular demonstration at the first South Island Agricultural Field Days. At Motukarara back in 1951, just over 1000 people went along to the event to view silage making and bulk lime distribution. Every two years since then, farmers have relied on the field days to show off the latest equipment, machinery and services in farming circles. The demonstrations are hands-on, helping farmers decide which product works best. Exhibitors come from all around New Zealand; around 30 from Mid Canterbury. Visitors these days are expected to top around 25,000 and include farmers and
rural people from Canterbury, the rest of New Zealand and some from overseas. Field days society chairman Hamish Maginness said he was proud that committees over the years had stuck to their roots. “Our aim with field days has always been to promote ingenuity and innovation, and provide farmers with the opportunity to view side-by-side demonstrations so they can make informed choices before purchasing machinery and equipment.” To mark 60 years since the inaugural event, the organising committee hired historian Roger Gilbert to write a commemorative book, which is expected to be published within the next month.

He said while the farming community had not been too badly impacted by the February 22 quake, their hearts went out to those who had lost family and friends. Only one exhibitors had pulled out, due to their commitment to cleaning up Christchurch, but the other 380 were ready to roll. Organisers said exhibitors were canvassed about going ahead with the event, and they were 100 per cent in favour of proceeding. While accommodation is at a premium, Rural Women has stepped into the breach to organise a billeting system with farmers in Canterbury.

LEADING THROUGH INNOVATION
Committees, past and present, will attend a special anniversary dinner on April 2. Mr Maginness said the event this year would hopefully bring a bit of cheer to farmers after what had been an awful year. “Last year Central Canterbury farmers had to deal with the aftermath of the Darfield quake that left homes, plant and paddocks damaged. Soon afterwards Southland farmers had their worst winter storm in decades that led to massive stock losses. “West Coast farmers then had to deal with the Pike River mine disaster, few coast families were left unscathed, and then Golden Bay farmers had to deal with unprecedented flooding.”

The South Island Agricultural Field Days Agricultural Field Days | Farming for the future | Lincoln | 30 March - 1 April 2011
The South Island Agricultural Field Day (SIAFD) is a non profit organisation and a sub committee of the Christchurch District Young Farmers Club. The committee organises an exhibition for the rural community every second year. For the period 1953-1989 the exhibition was limited to machinery only, but recently, to cater for the wider commercial requests, it has been extended to include machinery and services to the rural community. The SIAFD became associated with Lincoln University in 1975 when it used the University’s
farms. This arrangement was formalised in 1983 with the lease of parts of the Research farm as a permanent site that included semipermanent buildings, and electricity and water reticulation. The strong feature of the SIAFD that differentiates it from Agricultural and Pastoral Shows is the comparative demonstrations under working conditions. The SIAFD is the largest agricultural event in the South Island that is not an Agricultural & Pastoral Show.
Aims of the South Island Agricultural Field Days.
1. To provide a venue where machinery and other services can
be demonstrated to the rural community. 2. To provide a vehicle for senior YFC members of the Christchurch District to acquire, in a practical way, organisational and business skills.
Objectives of the South Island Agricultural Field Days.
1. To organise a professional exhibition that is an interface between the agricultural service industry and its clients. 2. To provide satisfaction to both parties in order to get return business.

Award winning technology Agricultural Field Days | Farming for the future | Lincoln | 30 March - 1 April 2011 Award winning variable rate irrigation technology is now available direct from your local Zimmatic Dealer. The AccuFlow VRI system for centre pivot and linear move irrigators provides unlimited flexibility, giving total control of where water is applied beneath an irrigator - technology that will be the way of the future in irrigation as farmers and the industry move to ensure optimal water management nationwide.
With remote programming and monitoring through the easy to use software interface and an advanced system controlling every sprinkler on the irrigator, water is applied at varying rates and applied only where necessary. Water and pumping costs are saved and the irrigator runs to maximum efficiency. Research of six sites around New Zealand suggests savings of 9-26% of irrigation water and energy savings of 27-77 kgCO2-eq/ha/yr are achievable by installing a Zimmatic AccuFlow VRI system. VRI gives farmers the ability to improve water use efficiencies through pivot and linear move irrigators. This converts to water and energy savings of $61-$150/ha/yr in situations where the soils under the irrigator are varied. Further gains in yield production increases are also expected. Cropping farmer Eric Watson farms at Wakanui, Ashburton. His 490ha irrigated property has variable soils of three distinct soil types. Faced with a restricted water take, he
installed variable rate irrigation three years ago and reports a considerable improvement in efficiencies including water usage, power consumption and man hours. The VRI system has allowed him to remove the 5.5ha of irrigator overlap, minimising overwatering of vegetable crops and peas which are sensitive to too much water. This reduction in water usage has been redistributed to a smaller irrigator, increasing production of another area which would have otherwise been sparsely irrigated. The improved control of water application has also reduced wheel rutting problems under the irrigators. Watson says installing variable speed pumps into two of the farm’s three wells has reduced electricity expenditure by 5% and the VRI efficiencies dropped consumption by a further 5.6% last season. The improved control and precision of water use has allowed him to make the season’s water allocation stretch over the whole season, even in a dry year, and he envisages up to 20% added water savings will be
achievable on his property from the AccuFlow VRI system. Desk top studies carried out by Carolyn Hedley of LandCare Research have shown that 15% - 20% of irrigated water and associated pumping costs could be saved. Over the coming irrigation seasons, Hedley, Watson and Precision Irrigation will be aiming to prove the results of the desktop study, while at the same time hoping to increase yields by not over-watering areas that usually receive too much irrigation. A MAF Sustainable Farming Fund funded research project on variable rate irrigation is being run across three trial sites, including Watson’s Wakanui farm. The trials aim to validate the desk top studies for each site by quantifying the economic and
environmental benefits of VRI, as well as identifying other potential benefits. Implications of fuel contamination Agricultural Field Days | Farming for the future | Lincoln | 30 March - 1 April 2011 Dirty diesel has been the talk of many farmers lately due to failures in their vehicles, but more to the point it is the old dirty storage tanks being used that have caused most of the issues. Ask anyone in the diesel repair industry. There has been a marked increase over the last 12 months of failures of injectors and fuel pumps in tractors and machinery due to the onset of common rail engines. This is not attributed to one brand of manufacturer but across the board where the tolerances are now so fine that even a tiny amount of water in the system can do huge damage. Ed Harrison from Sebco was speaking with a Service Manager from a tractor dealership where he was shown a common rail injector pump that had failed, the tractor was under a year old, had less than 1000 hrs on the clock and had stopped during a busy part of the season due to fuel contamination. The repair was just under $20,000, let alone the inconvenience of the tractor out of action! What Ed found really concerning that to the visual eye you could see no real damage. “Many operators don’t realise the implications of fuel contamination, Grandads or Dads old Nuffield, Fordson Major or MF 65 used to run fine with fuel from the old 500 gal overhead tank, the problem is that was 40 or 50 years ago” says Ed. The tractors/ sprayer/combine/Ute/SUV that are all used on the farm today are expected to fill from that same tank, most of these have hardly ever been cleaned out and are littered with unseen water contamination and rust on the inside. Another issue that crops up is the diesel bug, the above ground steel tank with direct sunlight on it heats up and with condensation, rust particles and the correct temperature an environment occurs that is beneficial for this algae to grow. It multiplies considerably and then blocks filters and pumps causing excessive damage. It is much like grinding paste going through your fuel injection system. The problem is quite easily avoided by updating fuel storage tanks to the Sebco Diesel Stations, as they are in an insulated environment, much like double glazing in your house, that virtually eliminates condensation and as they are not steel no rotting or rusting occurs. Ed says “I can only wonder when people spend many hundreds of thousands of dollars on new plant for the farm that they do not look at the overall benefit of spending a bit more by comparison for the longevity of their fleet”.

In adversity we seek simplicity - but why wait? Agricultural Field Days | Farming for the future | Lincoln | 30 March - 1 April 2011 The earthquake has reminded us that it is the simple things in life that matter most – to be able to walk, laugh, work, eat, drink and sleep. We reprioritised what is important to us – family and friends over things. Without adversity, sometimes we over complicate things and forget this. And so it is with broadband and telecommunications regulation. Critical to our economic and social prosperity, the Internet has seen one of the biggest shifts in the last couple of thousand years – consumers (and voters), have changed from being just passive readers, to active writers and bloggers. They can kick back on what they are told and through social media be heard quickly and globally. This phenomenon is having a significant impact in the Middle East as we speak, as well as the supply chains we operate in. And its enabled more work to be “where you are”, than “where you go to”. Right now many in Christchurch will be able to work away from their offices or homes, because the internet gives them that flexibility. Those that don’t, will want it. The government has three tools to try and fix most things – money, regulation and doing nothing. The first two are generally more attractive to politicians, so in the telecommunications sector it is deploying both. The Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI) and urban Ultra- Fast Broadband (UFB) initiative see money injected and are also bound up in the re-regulation of the whole sector. It’s got pretty complex. The government needs to simplify things a bit, so here’s three suggestions: Firstly - competition and open access are complicated issues for both rural and urban broadband initiatives, and telecommunications generally. Telecoms proposed structural separation is a web of complexity while Vodafone isn’t required to separate at all. The UFB has a joint ownership model while the RBI essentially gifts the new government funded broadband infrastructure assets to the tender winner. Why not simplify all this by putting all the copper and all the fibre assets and the cell tower assets into one entity which is separate and distinct from existing organizations. This community interconnect grid would be the equivalent of a telecommunications Transpower. Let’s call it Kordia, list it on the NZX, and regulate it like Transpower. It wouldn’t be allowed to retail anything and would
have to price on a national basis in a transparent manner without any discrimination. Cut out the complexity. No need for any regulatory holidays, ongoing complex political negotiations, or regulation by complex contracts. The government’s $1.8 billion would be represented by equity in a listed utility, just like Air NZ. Fibre and tower assets of Telecom, Vodafone, 2degrees would be paid for by equity in this entity as well. Secondly, when analogue TV is switched off, its high performance 700 megahertz spectrum will become available. It’s called “the digital dividend”, and for a reason – governments here and all around the world expect a dividend when they sell or release this spectrum. My suggestion is to keep it simple. Let’s split it into rural and urban sectors. This could be done on the same physical boundaries that the Government has split the UFB and RBI. Auction the urban sectors on commercial terms because it’s valuable and there is a business case to support private investment. However in the case of the rural sector, allocate the spectrum in a Dutch auction to the bidder that can best prove its ability to deliver value, service, performance and innovation to rural Kiwis. This would see the government gets its dividend, while at the same time enabling the rural sector to keep pace with changing technology in an area where there is market failure. Finally, let’s stop our kids getting RSI in their thumbs, losing the ability to use grammar and to spell properly - just regulate mobile prices instead of all the shadow boxing that goes on endlessly – so that teenagers will actually talk on their cell phones. Broadband isn’t just about enabling our primary sector, which produces over two-thirds of our exports to have the next big enabler of productivity. We need to remember that rural people are people too and that everything that is not urban is rural. The social, health, education and importantly tourism gains are considerable and important to the whole nation Adversity does get us to reprioritise and to simplify things. But why does it take an earthquake. Why wait? Let’s do it anyway, especially right now in the telecommunications sector. By Conor English CEO Federated Farmers

Made for New Zealand conditions Agricultural Field Days | Farming for the future | Lincoln | 30 March - 1 April 2011 We are due to once again attend the South Island Fieldays which we always get excited about. One drill that we will have onsite and also on the demo field is a 4-8m HD Series (heavy duty triple disc). Craig Clucas from Lismore Mid Canterbury is the proud owner of this machine and to date has covered approximately 500 hectares since August 2010 proving very successful for Mr Clucas. “I was extending my farm and changing some farming practices, I needed to upgrade
my direct drill with one that could easily drill a variety of seed, drop fertilizer and insecticide down the spout, have a crane and be able to be able to work through a variety of ground conditions so I could cut right back on cultivation, I am really happy I went with an Allen Custom Drill.” “After Craig Allen had drawn up the drill he still made me feel involved in the manufacturing process. I liked it because I got exactly what I wanted in the drill and it
was also really interesting to see the drill come together.” “I have drilled a variety of crops so far from Brown Top to Peas and everything in between, I like how the drill is so easy to use and setup. The calibration of the Accord seeder was simple to pick up, the change over and clean out is the simplest and fastest system than any other drill I’ve used. I also like how the front turbo discs create an excellent environment for plant establishment.”
“I was a bit worried that in order to get a drill that would offer better penetration and accuracy that I would need a bigger tractor to pull it, but I was pleased to find out my 150hp tractor was up to it! The results I’m seeing are the best I’ve seen, I’m really happy.” We appreciate that Mr Clucas is allowing us to have this particular 4-8m H-D drill on display at the South Island Fieldays alongside our T-D Series (Tyne drill).
Specialist seed drill manufacturer Allen Custom Drills is proud to produce a New Zealand-made product for New Zealand conditions. It designs and engineers new drills that last longer and are more economical. Craig Allen, the manager of the Ashburton-based company, said the company stood by its basic product. “However it’s the innovative products created by my team that makes me extremely proud. We are always looking at ways to make direct drilling simpler, more cost effective and as maintenance free as is possible. “Having a rural and contracting background helps, it makes for a practical company.” Mr Allen said it was important to meet clients’ needs, whether they were a small scale farmer or large scale contractor. “We work closely with them to ensure all expectations are met and within budget. Allen’s latest custom designed drill, the Air Seeder Tyne drill, has a significantly lower cost than its competitors and lower horsepower requirements than disc drills. It can work widths of 3.0m or 3.6m rigid or folding 4.0m, 5.0m, 6.0m and 8.0m. The drill is of light construction but is durable and provides options like 5 or 6 inch row spacing, fertiliser box, insecticide box and disc openers.
NZ made for NZ conditions You deserve to benefit from the durability, simplicity and accuracy an Allen Custom Drill delivers superior seeding results. THE CHOICE IS YOURS: • 5” or 6” row spacings • 3m to 8m drilling widths, folding to 3m transport width • Various bin options: Fertiliser, Insecticide & Slugbait • Crane option for loading up to 1000kg bags • Painted in colour of your choice

What our clients say... To Whom It May Concern: This is to advise that we have been dealing with Garden City Security for many years & they have provided security equipment for both our home & business premises. Recently we asked Garden City Security to upgrade our home security system to include a driveway alarm & camera surveillance system. Our needs were well & truly met and with great service from both the salesman & installers. We have found Garden City Security to be very helpful & knowledgeable in all aspects of what we have requested of them. Garden City Security are available to talk to when you telephone them for any advice – rather than having to leave a message & wait for someone to get back to you. They are on duty 24/7 which is great. We have no hesitation in recommending Garden City Security to anyone that needs any type of security. It has been a pleasure to deal with a company that is genuine & upfront. Brian & Marlene Victor
To Whom It May Concern “We visited the Home Ideas Centre for ideas on a number of projects around our home. Whilst there we saw the display from Garden City Security, and thought they may be able to help solve our home security problem – caused by the size of our home and the difficulties of access within it. Peter & the team from Garden City Security provided excellent & prompt service and came up with a fabulous, easy solution to our security needs both inside and in our grounds. The installation was trouble free and Garden City Security has also provided excellent follow up service to fine tune the systems to ensure our total satisfaction.” Roger & Trish Smith

Attention: The Manager Thank you for your recent installation of our security system. Your office was very pleasant to deal with and arrangements were made promptly & efficiently. We were given a clear explanation of a system to suit our needs and lifestyle and a written quotation for its installation. Your workmen were very clean and tidy and the system was installed with a minimum of fuss. We were left with a full understanding of it’s use and were comfortable with it right from the start. Thank you again. Peter & Penny Bell Dear Peter, Thank you for the arranging of and installation of our house alarm. It’s so easy to use and being wireless was a great choice for the structure of our house. I found your business to be prompt and professional and I will happily refer GCS to my friends Wendy Hooper
This is real life case study of one of our clients. Her name has been altered for confidentiality reasons. Mrs. Sheila O’Brien lives in a isolated rural property. Her husband passed away late last year and she is now living along for the first time in her life Without her life-long partner beside her she began to feel vulnerable and had so little confidence in her home security that she decided it was best to spend her nights in a friends house. She then heard about Garden City Security and contacted us to discuss her fears. We called to her home for an assessment and after getting to know Sheila a little better we were able to recommend and install a system that gave her enough confidence to move back into her home fulltime. We recommended that early detection was they key to Sheila’s peace of mind so we installed a Solar Powered Parabeam alert system at the entrance to her 200m long driveway. Anyone entering the driveway trips the beam which causes twin floodlights up the drive to turn on & activate a buzzer in her bedroom & kitchen . We also installed a driveway camera so that now if Sheila hears the buzzer she knows someone is coming up the driveway and can check the video monitor in her room to see who it is. Sheila initially wanted to install a panic alarm that would alert her neighbours if there was ever a problem but now with the Parabeam system she has time to lock herself securely in her room, alert her friends or family and it will also deter the would be intruder from going any further. As Sheila says herself “the system does everything I want it to”, I have the peace of mind in my own home that I have been looking for”. “ Garden City Security “have a fabulous back up service and if there’s ever an issue they are out so quick it doesn’t matter”. She has also recommended GCS to many of her friends.

Working together for sustainability Agricultural Field Days | Farming for the future | Lincoln | 30 March - 1 April 2011 The Agrecovery Rural Recycling Programme and assurance services provider AsureQuality have entered into a partnership aimed at reinforcing and promoting environmental best practice to New Zealand’s farmers and growers. AsureQuality’s assurance services range “from farm to fork”, and help provide evidence that the food produced by farmers and growers meets the standards of safety, ethics and environmental sustainability required by New Zealand’s most demanding markets. AsureQuality is the country’s largest provider of audit services to the primary production sector, with customers including milk suppliers, meat and wool growers, and horticultural exporters. On-farm audits are regularly conducted to measure compliance with legal requirements, industry standards and a wide range of customer assurance programmes. Since 2007 the Agrecovery Rural Recycling Programme, supported by a large number of brand owners and primary industry stakeholders, has provided these same farmers and growers with a certified and sustainable disposal solution for persistent on-farm wastes such as plastic chemical containers, unwanted/expired chemicals and used silage wrap. Agrecovery members are able to record and report on their recycling activity, using a Smart Member Services (SMS) function on the Agrecovery website at www.agrecovery.co.nz. As most industry compliance programmes contain requirements on compliant waste disposal, and some actually specify participation in Agrecovery, it makes good sense for Agrecovery and AsureQuality to work together, says Pat Turton, Business Development Manager for AsureQuality. “We are going on-farm and assessing a farmer or grower’s performance against various criteria. Naturally this is a complex process and takes
a lot of time. If we are aware that the farmer or grower is an Agrecovery member who can access a report of their recycling history in advance of their audit, it would simplify one aspect of the audit process, saving time for both the auditor and our customers.” The relationship also benefits Agrecovery, according to Adele Rose, General Manager 3R Group, Programme Managers for Agrecovery. “Agrecovery has been welcomed by many primary producers, but there are still many who are not aware of our services and how they work. Some people are paying for waste disposal elsewhere, or they are burning or dumping their waste in a manner that may not comply with their assurance programme’s requirements. “We are hoping that this relationship with AsureQuality will increase the visibility and understanding of Agrecovery, put the correct information into the hands of the people who need it most, and support their efforts with awareness and education.” Aside from the common goals of promoting sustainability and best environmental practice, AsureQuality and Agrecovery have similar operational strengths, states Mr Turton. “We share many existing relationships with industry and stakeholders in the Agri Business sector, have an excellent understanding of the relevant legislation and compliance issues facing industry, and have very high standards of service design and delivery that are accredited to global standards. “New Zealand’s international customers have strict quality and environmental standards, and the various assurance programmes we are involved with require adherence to those standards. It’s not just about encouraging best practice; it’s an economic necessity to maintain our export markets.”

The “Magical” Sky Experience

We piled into the van and set off on the adventure, a true safari. The pilots ran a number of wind tests along the way, to pin point the perfect take-off location. We reached a secret paddock deep in the country surrounding Methven, and started to unpack the large balloons. There were two balloons going up that morning, and we all helped to get the large parachute like domes filled with the hot air from the massive gas blowtorches. As the balloons continued to fill, the baskets were almost set to rise, so we all piled in, extremely excited about what was about to happen next. The anticipation is incredible, you are gripping the side of the basket, willing yourself to be lighter so that the basket can rise, then all of a sudden, one last big burst on the gas burners and we can feel the basket lift from the ground. The feeling is exhilarating, as you slowly rise above the earth, heart pounding, knowing that you are now in the hands of nature and your pilot, to be taken to where the breeze blows. Rising higher and higher, the views across the patchwork plains towards the snow capped

Southern Alps is stunning. Rising higher and higher, as far as the eye can see, you can see almost all of Canterbury, from the ocean to the mountains, including a glorious view of Mount Cook! I stopped to try and take in the experience, but it is so magical, words truely can’t describe the emotion. Gliding weightlessly, so high above the earth, you feel like you are in heaven. So peaceful, there’s not a sound other than the occasional blast of heat from the gas burners. The photo opportunities are endless, from capturing the expansive landscape, to detailed shots of the snow capped Southern Alps, to viewing the beautifully braided rivers, from mountain to sea.

As we slowly start drifting back towards earth, it is time to take a final look at the beauty of Mid-Canterbury and prepare for the landing. At this point you are totally at the mercy of mother nature and the experienced pilot. A clear paddock is chosen, and we brace for the landing. The basket gracefully hits the ground and bounces along, once, twice, then skids across the earth coming to a complete stop.

We made it! The adrenalin is pumping and everyone is grinning and laughing. We are greeted at our destination by a fine gentleman in a suit, ready to serve us a champagne breakfast. Aoraki Balloon Safari’s is truely an experience to remember for a lifetime, and one that I personally will treasure forever.

On a chilly, frosty morning, a group of strangers huddled in the Aoraki Balloon Safari office. Nervousness and excitement was thick in the air. We were all given thick plastic covers to put over our shoes to help keep our feet warm while we were up in the air, and at the peak of your flight, you certainly appreciate them!
