There is much more to life here. Live it, Love it Ashburton!

Ashburton Guardian Advertisting Feature

In the heart of the fertile Canterbury Plains, lies the Ashburton District, better known as Mid Canterbury. Here the sun rises from the blue Pacific Ocean, tingeing the tops of snow capped mountains, before its warmth descends from the peaks to illuminate the golden plains. The district, which comprises of the main town centers of Ashburton, Methven and Rakaia, is an outstanding environment to live, work and play. Love the lifestyle Mid Canterbury offers a standard of housing well above the national average, at attractive prices. Upgrade to a superb residence with extra amenities for your family at far less than you would pay elsewhere, or choose a more modest home and substantially improve your financial security. Nestled at the base of the mighty Southern Alps, to the shores of sparkling Lake Hood, the range of unique and exciting living opportunities is endless. For the discerning home buyer, the premier area of Lake Hood for a waterfront home compares favourably with any up market property in New Zealand. If your lifelong dream is to own a lifestyle block with a few sheep and perhaps a home or two, you can realize it here more easily than you might think. Education excellence Children excel in the supportive environments fostered in the range of high quality preschools, primary schools and secondary schools. Mid Canterbury is fortunate to have a great selection of pre school options within walking distance of the residential areas within Ashburton, Methven and Rakaia. The primary schools range from large schools in the townships to smaller schools in the rural villages, offering pupils a unique blend of education in a refreshing country environment. Ashburton and Mt Hutt Colleges are well regarded as high quality New Zealand secondary schools. Both co-educational, the colleges are well recognized for both academic achievement, and sporting accomplishments. With recreational pursuit abundance surrounding the colleges, our students are treated to a wide variety of curriculum and learning activities, providing a broad and balanced education. Great Sports Do you aspire for your children to become an All Black, an Olympic Gold Medalist, a world class rower or champion cyclist? They can achieve that here in Mid

Canterbury, where many others before them have done just that. Many international sports stars have emerged from the district to accomplish international fame, in cycling, swimming, rugby, hockey, water-skiing, netball, athletics, rowing and much more. It all starts with sport and recreational facilities available for every age group, where children first begin to develop their abilities. Mid Canterbury’s excellent sporting facilities, such as the international standard hockey turf and tennis courts, attract events from all levels, and currently there are plans for a multi million dollar indoor sports stadium, featuring a world class indoor cycling valedrome and aquatic facilities, to begin construction shortly. Job and business opportunities abound Mid Canterbury is an agricultural powerhouse, with the continued growth of the district providing exceptional employment and businesses investment opportunities. The district’s growth and economic vibrancy means an exceptionally low unemployment rate. A long list of successful, local companies have achieved national and international recognition. The pioneering spirit has stimulated innovation, leading to the growth of industries producing high quality products for local consumption and for export around the world. The district is a dynamic, growing area with a strong and vibrant economy, innovative technologies and a very positive attitude. Growing demand for prime industrial land in Mid Canterbury prompted the development of the 123 hectare Ashburton Business Estate. The main trunk railway line adjoins the business estate, and once the relocation of the main rail yard from Ashburton’s CBD to the new business estate is complete, it will make rail access more viable and cost effective to our local industries. The design of the Business Estate has included higher load-bearing capability and road widths to accommodate larger-capacity containers, and technological infrastructure such as high speed cabling. There are still sites available for purchase for those businesses who only want the best. The best thing about working in the Ashburton District is that after a hard day at the office or on the farm, fun, relaxation and adventure are at your fingertips. Where else in the world can you be skiing, boating, hiking, rafting, kayaking, water-skiing or fishing just 20 minutes after knocking off work? Work, live and love life. It is possible in Mid Canterbury.

The locals that reside in our beautiful part of the world will attest, there’s no place like Mid Canterbury! Gorgeous climate, abundant fun and recreation plus excellent community facilities, why would you choose to live anywhere else?

Raiaka welcomes you with a smile to the salmon capital of New Zealand Ashburton Guardian Advertisting Feature

Situated close to the banks of the spectacular Rakaia River, Rakaia holds many hidden gems, waiting to be discovered. The spectacular braided Rakaia River holds plentiful amounts of Salmon and Trout, making it an anglers paradise. The Rakaia is the best salmon river in New Zealand. The peak of the salmon season being the months of February and March. It is very wide and highly braided over almost its entire 125 km length. Though access is good from either bank all the way back in to the Southern Alps most angling pressure is concentrated in the 22 kms between the SH 1 bridge and the river mouth. Twenty years ago it was unknown for anglers to fish for salmon above the gorge but this is now more common. The dry and dusty shingle riverbed often spans over a kilometre in width interrupted with slow flowing braids ranging from just a few inches to fast water several metres deep. The river has many access points, and if fishing isn’t your cup of tea, there is plentiful opportunity for many other recreational activities such as rafting, kayaking, swimming, horse-trekking and bird watching. After an exciting day at the river, the township of Rakaia is inviting and friendly. Whether you are stopping for a coffee or an ice-cream, or making an evening out of your journey, Rakaia has an expanding option of fine eateries. From exquisite juicy salmon at Salmon Tales, specialty breads at Meads Tearooms, hearty warmth from one of the two pubs or fish and chips, Rakaia will satisfy even the fussiest of taste buds. Take the time to explore the rich history in the library, or make time to stop and shop in the cute boutiques, such as Avenue Gifts. You never know what treasure you will uncover from the streets of Rakaia. If you are looking for a family activity, then Salmon World is a fun destination for everyone.

Salmon World is designed to appeal to all ages and nationalities and contains a number of unique and fascinating attractions, all based on the local Rakaia history of Salmon Fishing. It allows for a hands on experience of the local ecology, and is perfect for educational tours and school groups. The centrepiece of the aquarium is the 30,000-litre salmon tank housing large salmon and trout alongside a smaller multi-pool system with brown and rainbow trout, eels and whitebait. As you follow the Rakaia Gorge Trail, visitors will be able to see the salmon life cycle from the salmon egg stages through to smolt and finally the adult fish. One of the great features of the complex, is that at specified times during the day you will be able to feed the Salmon, Trout and Eels (you may just have to watch your fingers with the eels.) This makes the educational experience fun for young and old. The Aquarium and fresh water pools are a stunning attraction in itself, but Salmon World also host a small 4D theatre, showcasing some of the magical adventure tourism activities located throughout the Rakaia River Gorge, giving an added boost to local tourism. The Salmon World 4D movie experience is located in a small 3D Movie Theatre in the Salmon World building and seats up to 24 thrill seekers. The film lasts approximately 13 minutes into which Salmon World jam the very best of adventure experiences that our region has to offer. Rakaia is charming, with creative and talented people producing unique gifts and home pieces, all with a touch of local flair. Artisans creating pottery, floral art, oil and water colours and home spun knitwear, will leave you feeling spoiled for choice. There is more than meets the eye in Rakaia.

Jacket and tie off, life jacket on!

You leave work at 5pm, and by 5:30pm you are jet skiing on a crystal clear lake watching your children play in the back yard. Impossible? Not if you live on the shores of Mid Canterbury’s Lake Hood. The first thing you’ll notice as you approach Lake Hood is the unmatched panorama of the stunning lake, with the dramatic snow capped Southern Alps as a back drop. Nestled in a quiet rural setting, you have the best of both worlds right in your front yard – the privacy, seclusion and beauty of lakeside living combined with close proximity to the shops, stores and eateries of Ashburton. Lake Hood has grown from the vision of one man who dared to dream that such an astonishingly beautiful environment could be created. A stunningly beautiful environment fed by natural spring water bubbling up from the earth and crystal clear waters flowing from the Ashburton River – one of the foremost tributaries of melted snows from New Zealand’s Southern Alps. This is luxurious living at its best, beckoning for you to embrace it’s beauty and become a part of the ultimate living experience. Imagine waking up every morning to the gentle sound of water lapping against the beach at the bottom of your garden. You open the blinds and the morning sun dapples the water, inviting you to go for an early morning dip, or maybe today you’ll stretch your legs on a jog around the lake... Wide open country, alpine views from a crystal clear lake provide the ultimate New Zealand lifestyle. Trout fishing, pleasure boating, swimming, picnicking, waterfront living and a sumptuous restaurant - Lake Hood has it all. In excess of 80 hectares in area, 2,300 metres in length and over 1 kilometre wide – the lake comprises an eight lane international rowing course, a separate water skiing area, as well as a separate jet skiing area, plus sailing and kayaking, which can all be enjoyed on or around the lake simultaneously. Living on the shores of Lake Hood, you can be a passive spectator or an active participant in the best sporting and lifestyle development in Canterbury. Residents of Lake Hood treasure the quiet beauty and

serene surroundings of our little corner of heaven, while relishing being part of the action when world class events are hosted on the lake. The Lake House Restaurant, Cafe & Bar stands dramatically at the centre of Lake Hood, offering delectable cuisine, fine wine and incredible views. Meet your neighbours for an after work drink, or treat yourself to a romantic dinner for two. This outstanding experience is one of Mid Canterbury’s best kept secret. Our beautiful Lake Hood is open to everyone to enjoy, featuring relaxing lake side grassed recreation areas with picnic tables. Situated only an hours drive south of Christchurch, why not pack up the car and bring the family for a day of relaxation and fun. Today the lake caters for 150 residential lots, many of which are lake and canal side, featuring their own private jettys. Due to the success of this pristine lakeside living environment, the lake is being extended, with construction beginning for further residential living opportunities. Extension plans for Lake Hood are now underway which will see the addition of a further 80 hectares of waterways and lake extension, set amongst 220 hectares of surrounding land. This is your opportunity to secure your own land amongst this prosperous haven. The new developments will allow for a range of new and exciting lakefront and canal living opportunities, including lifestyle block sized lots for purchase. Owning your own slice of this heaven is more achievable than you may think. Land prices will vary considerably depending on size and positioning, so you can enjoy living amongst a country rural setting in a relaxed and inviting atmosphere with abundant recreational opportunities at your feet. This exciting development is taking shape quickly, with expectations from our project team that all stage one properties will be completed within two years, with the first lots becoming available, ready to commence building on during the next 12 months. We invite you to contact us to find out more information on how to become a part of this exciting new development. The rest of your life starts today, so live and play in style, at Lake Hood.

The Plains Vintage Railway and Historical Museum Ashburton Guardian Advertisting Feature

Looking for somewhere interesting to take the children or grandchildren on the weekend? Somewhere where the children have plenty of space to be children, away from their Playstations? Perhaps a place not too far away, where there is good choice of places to get some lunch and enjoy it in pleasant, quiet country surroundings? Enjoy a picnic lunch around the pond in the shade of the Tinwald Domain, where the children can feed the ducks… Leave the car in the shade and pop through the gate to The Plains and show the children around the expansive recreated pioneer village. Imagine how the antique agricultural machinery once was used by their great grandparents…. And wonder how they lived in the little cottage without any electricity! The littlies are all mad about Thomas the Tank Engine, why not treat them to a ride on a real life train on The Vintage Railway? Let them watch and listen as the engine puffs its way out of the station with a load of happy passengers aboard with smoke and steam coming from its funnel… Train travel must be the most romantic and relaxing form of travel ever created. Add a touch of olde world elegance in the form of an Edwardian era train and top off with a steam locomotive straight out of New Zealand’s pioneering past and you’ve got it all. The sun sparkles on the locomotive’s brass work as it chuffs sedately along, through the pleasant pastoral countryside. Smoke and steam drift back along the train from its funnel as the cars gently rock and creak along behind, their wheels singing out that once familiar clickety-clack sound as they roll by. Ah yes, but that’s just where the truly heritage experience really begins.

The Plains Vintage Railway and Historical Museum is a complete heritage experience, key exhibits include: • Fire Station, with appliances from Ashburtons formative years onwards. • Lynn Museum of woodworking and ornamental turning. • Extensive vintage tractor collection printing works, replica shops and historic church create a quaint pioneer country village. • Steam locomotives ranging from ‘A’64- from the New Zealand Railway’s construction days in Canterbury; ‘K’88 ‘Washington’ from the Vogel era

What also attracted large amounts of attention was that this restoration was performed largely by one man, the late Bob Anderson. Take a break in Ashburton

Ashburton Domain & Community Pool Ashburton Guardian Advertisting Feature When visiting Ashburton, the Ashburton Domain is a charming place to visit for some relaxation and reflection. The Ashburton Domain is often referred to as the “jewel in the crown” of Ashburton and is very much a community asset. It is known for its many established trees and in many cases some of the finest specimens you will see anywhere. It is also recognised for its wide range of shrubs - in particular the deciduous azaleas, rhododendrons, lilacs, roses, maples, magnolias and conifers. Collections of azaleas, camellias and other shrubs have been added to the mature trees. The Domain has an extensive water system, featuring streams, bridges and a main pond, making for a very picturesque and serene setting for some quiet time out, and a fun place to feed the ducks. There are seats and picnic tables dotted throughout the extensive grounds and gardens, to allow for a pleasurable experience of its beauty. With a large playground and paddling pool, the Domain is a perfect family picnic spot. There is a separate picnic ground with two electrically operated barbecues and hot water facilities - this area is available for hire at $30.00 per day. The domain is at its best when seen in the autumn and spring, with many couples taking advantage of this for their wedding or for their photos. The Domain is also host to a wide range of sporting facilities, including an all weather hockey turf, world class tennis courts, a bowling green, an athletic field, and cricket and soccer fields. Across the road from the Domain is the Ashburton Community Pool. The Community Pool is Ashburton’s only swimming facility that is open year round. The six lane main pool is used predominantly as a lane swimming and recreation pool and the small/learner pool is used for learn to swim programs and for under 8’s or weak/non swimmers to learn water confidence and practice swimming in a warm, safe environment. Ashburton Community Pool has a wide variety of programs to meet your requirements from lane swimming through to the great Ashswim Learn To Swim Programs. If it’s just for fun or a birthday party then come and enjoy the inflatables, then relax outside in the great weather around the FREE BBQ. Whether you are interested in a one off swim, or if you intend on becoming a regular, the Ashburton Community Pool encourages you to pop in and check out their facilities.

New Zealand is one of the world’s leaders in designing buildings to withstand earthquakes and our building codes require a very highstandard of earthquake“performance”. The earthquake performance requirements for New Zealand homes are excactly the same regardless of the materials used in construction. So concrete homes are at least as safe in earthquakes - and have you ever tried to burn concrete? Concrete’s great thermal storage properties mean it not only captures free energy from the sun, but it also acts as a temperature moderator. Whether it be summer or winter, day or night, substantial temperature fluctuations within the home can largely eliminated with good design using concrete - consistent temperature means consistent comfort.

Build time

Mass production techniques allow as little as eight weeks ‘on site’ build time for a typical three bedroom home in Canterbury. This gives savings in temporary accommodation rentals and with bridging finance.

e

But there’s more than your comfort at stake - concrete homes are healthier. The temperature moderating effect of a well designed concrete home maintains an environment which is healither, especially for the eldery, young children and people respiratory conditions.

A concretehome which is designed following some straight forward design principles is simply more comfortable to live in than a traditional light timber fram house. Concrete is more comfortable as a result of two properties that are inherent in the material - sound insulation and thermal storage.

Concrete has a natural ability to insulate against noise transmission - and less noise means greater comfort. It is the density of concrete that will allow you to enjoy unsurpassed peace and quiet in your home.
