SANDRA KEITH
like we’ve never seen her
before Ashburton lawn bowler Sandra Keith has taken an alternative route to the top, balancing work, personal life and bowls and still finding time to become a world champion. PHOTOS JOSEPH JOHNSON
5 Ashburton’s Sandra Keith is the first to admit her rise to the top has been nothing but unconventional. Juggling work and lawn bowls her entire life, she has finally struck the right balance which has catapulted her towards a world champion and her recent inclusion in the New Zealand Black Jacks squad. Sandra talks to Myles Hume about the struggles and triumphs on the way to becoming Ashburton’s working class hero. Sandra Keith is the first to admit she never saw herself as a world champion. Living alone in her rented three-bedroom Ashburton home, the quiet and unassuming bowler simply works hard by day and plays bowls by night. Grafting away in the spray booth at local business Ashford Handicrafts, the 45-year-old plies her trade, applying lacquer to spinning wheels and looms. She scrimps and saves every cent she earns to go towards rent, travel and accommodation for weekend bowling tournaments, where competitors now respect the bowler who was just an everyday player four years ago. While most people at the top of
their game plan towards their goals, it has been a somewhat different approach for Sandra, who has battled judgment and adversity, all the while only ever discovering a hunger to play for her province, Canterbury, just a few years ago. A modest Sandra agrees that her rise to the top has been nothing short of unconventional, in a time when sporting professionalism dominates from an early age with money and long-term plans always in mind. Her tale is one of a working class hero, one that has come from a modest family of five living on a Hinds farm, to accidental success, where she has been able to add a rare but prized title to her name – outdoor bowls world champion. Cyprus set the tone in November last year, when Sandra won the World Champion of Champions women’s singles title. Being there was one thing, but winning was the break she never thought was possible in a life which has come with challenges. Always being a big girl, Sandra was often a victim of schoolyard bullies as she struggled through her unmemorable years at Ashburton College. “But it was all right, I’ve never been the most popular person. I used to get flak, you see, because of my size. I have always been big so I suppose school wasn’t the best,” Sandra says, looking back. However, college is a time she can now look upon with a wry smile. “I can look back now and say, ‘well I have done pretty well, better in the sporting world than most fit people’, and that was something that I never thought I would realise,” she says. However, school wasn’t the only time when her size was a talking point. Even as an adult,
bowling clubs were a place where rumours about her image circulated last year and came back to the four-time national bowls champion. “It’s common fact that people have been talking, and not just round Ashburton, that I don’t fit the image and that’s why I haven’t played for New Zealand. And at a point (I don’t know because I’m not a selector) you start believing what you’re hearing.” A month ago Sandra’s dream kept on running as she was selected to play for the New Zealand Black Jacks for their upcoming trans-Tasman showdown against Australia. Some say the selection has been a long time coming for the Allenton bowler, who has always believed in her ability since her meteoritic rise in 2011. With Sandra, what you see is what you get. “All I have done is just gone out and done the best I can at what I do ... it didn’t worry me (not being selected earlier) because I knew if I kept winning and doing what I’m doing, they couldn’t ignore it. “There would be questions asked and they can’t come out publicly and say ‘you’re too fat’.” Although it was hard for her to ignore the whispers at first, it is nothing but a distant memory now. Because when Sandra returns to her Allenton home from a day’s graft, she can sit back on the recliner with a rum in hand knowing she really is a world-class bowler. The fact she can see her reflection in the rows of silverware sitting on the built-in shelving in her lounge, while immersing herself in national titles hung around the room, speaks for itself. Not to mention the gleaming World Champion of Champions title perched on the top shelf. “I don’t know what my motivation is, I think it’s just to prove a point that you don’t have to fit the image to do all right at things,” she says. *** A small Lynnford farm near Hinds provides the backdrop for a young Sandra Keith.
Brought up by parents Sandy and Ngaire, Sandra enjoyed a modest upbringing with her older brothers Rodney and Alistair, all who shared a love for bowls. As a family, they were a tight bunch and Sandra could always be found down at the local indoor bowling club after a game of netball for Hinds, watching her late parents roll up against good friends. Reflecting on her childhood, Sandra, as a quiet kid, remembers her childhood as nothing out of the ordinary. Attending Hinds School, swimming and fishing with classmates at the local river make up some of the fond memories as a youngster. Mucking around on the farm was also a memorable part of Sandra’s childhood, where her father Sandy prided himself on his locally-sold potatoes, along with a raft of mixed crops, cattle and sheep. “It was a good life and I never wanted for anything, it was just good and basic,” Sandra says, looking back. It was at about 10 years old that Sandra took a liking to bowls. With no other choice but to hop off the school bus at the Hinds Bowling Club on a Tuesday afternoon, Sandra used to watch her mother Ngaire play week in week out. It was not long before Sandra made the decision to give bowls a shot and started playing indoor bowls competitively at 13, where she eventually made her first rep team – Ashburton. “It was something I was never pushed into, just something that happened because I thought I would give it a go.” Throughout her time at college, Sandra continued with the indoor bowls and stayed with the Hinds Netball Club, playing in Ashburton every week. “After we played we used to go catch up with mum and dad at indoor bowls and go watch them play for hours and hours, but that was just natural for us because they always played, and that’s pretty much how I got hooked.” Continued over page

6 At 17, Sandra left school and took up a job as a machinist at Tekau Knitwear, playing outdoor bowls at the weekends against players more than 30 years her senior. “I could never really fully commit to playing bowls during the week because I had to have a job to earn a living,” she says. She had a natural ability. “People used to say around here I shouldn’t win as much as I did because I was a part-time bowler. All the women used to play here during the week and I would come along in the weekends and win tournaments and think ‘how hard is it?’.” Her job and bowls made up a Sandra’s life until she was 33, when adversity struck. Already having dealt with her mother’s sudden death due to a complication with triple bypass surgery when Sandra was 20, she lost her father 13 years later when he went in for hip surgery. She took a break from outdoor bowls for a few years, giving herself time to get in the right head space. “That’s one of the hardest things with what I have been doing lately, those two aren’t there to see it, because they both loved bowls so much,” she says, as a tear rolls down her cheek. When Tekau Knitwear closed down in 2007, Sandra took a few months off. She eventually landed a job at Ashford’s Handicrafts, where she remains today. With no kids or partner, Sandra lives on her
own and while she isn’t home very often during bowls season, she says she likes her independence. She recently broke up from an 18-month relationship and admits it was nice coming home to someone each night. “I’m probably just set in my own ways, being on my own for so long, but that’s not the reason why we broke up. “I’m a great believer in knowing things will happen, I’m not out searching for a partner, I know it will happen when it’s supposed to.” With her hectic schedule and a job to do, Sandra says it is hard to find time to fit in the little things in life. The last time she wore make-up was when she was a bridesmaid at her friend’s wedding, and shopping is well down on the list of priorities right now. So, to give Sandra a bit of “me time”, the Guardian organised (with her bosses) an afternoon of pampering, treating her to a hair cut at Madison Hair Studio, shopping at The Merino Story in Hinds and then a make-up appointment at Revive on Oakview in Longbeach. It was a rare treat for Sandra, who looked like a new person. “It was a bit different for me because I’ve hardly got time to do the groceries,” she said. “I thoroughly enjoyed it.” After all her pampering, Sandra sat at Braided Rivers with the usual rum and diet coke in hand, taking a moment to reflect on how and when

the string of successes started for her. *** She recalls 2011 as the year when she regained the “bug” for bowls. Representing her Allenton club at the New Zealand Nationals in Dunedin, Sandra was the unassuming player who made it through to the semifinals, along the way defeating New Zealand representatives Jan Khan and Dale Lang. Since then, it has been an unbelievable couple of years for Sandra, who has strung together one of the quickest rises to success in bowling circles, and probably world sport. “After Dunedin, that is where it all started really.” Sandra made the decision to join the Leeston club in October 2011 where she combined with Serena Matthews and Karolyn Boon to enter the Canterbury championships. Not only did the team go on to win their province, they went on to win the South Island zone and put themselves in for a chance at the nationals. Not long after the Canterbury triples title, Sandra, Serena and Karolyn asked 12-year-old Tegan Mower to join the team, and the group went on to take out the Canterbury fours. With her string of success, Sandra then combined with Valmai Hantz in the Canterbury pairs in January 2012 to add yet another Canterbury title to her fast-filling trophy cabinet. But what happened next triggered an avalanche of success for Sandra, which put her in stet to become one of the best women’s singles bowlers in the world. She took out the national singles title on January 4 last year in Auckland, her first ever national title which automatically opened up the opportunity to represent her country at the World Champion of Champions tournament later that
Revealing her new outfit at Merino Story in Hinds, Sandra was blown away with her new look.

year. To add to that, Sandra also went on to win the national pairs with Valmai and the triples with Serena and Karolyn. By the end of April Sandra had three national titles and three Canterbury titles, all within the space of six months. “It was pretty unreal,” she says, looking back. But Sandra says she would have never realised her success if it wasn’t for her employers Elizabeth and Richard Ashford, who gave her time off work to travel to tournaments. It allowed Sandra, who doesn’t do things by halves, to fully commit to her beloved sport. “I think by the end of the year I had had about 16 days off work,” Sandra says. “They have been great and supported me so well with bowls.” *** Cyprus in October last year was the next destination for Sandra on her whirlwind journey. Sandra, “practically a nobody” in international bowling circles, was astonished that she was destined to compete against the best bowlers on the globe in the World Champion of Champions tournament. Penned in the calendar since she won her New Zealand singles title, Sandra knew she had to prepare if she wanted to be within a chance of becoming the best in the world. Cue Peter Whindam. Sandra assigned Peter as her coach to hone in on Cyprus, and they started planning their
schedule and tactics in early July after she took a couple of months away from bowls. Knowing it was going to be a slow green in hot conditions, the duo went about their work to get Sandra accustomed to it, working the right muscles and altering her play. The pair put together a training plan, one which involved Sandra bowling corner to corner on the Allenton Bowling Club green to get her arm used to rolling a stronger bowl. The greenkeeper also left one of the rinks unrolled with rougher grass and she played a couple of live games against fellow club members to get used to the set play system. The whole club was behind her. “I found out a couple of weeks out from leaving that the ground speeds were 12 to 13 and that was exactly what I had been practising on and I thought ‘this is great, I couldn’t have had better preparation’.” A week out from departing, she did not touch her Dreamline bowls, wanting to enter Cyprus with no mental strain and ready to take on the world. But it was not that easy. Sandra was nervous, she had never travelled past Australia and before she left she developed a rash on her leg. Even though her doctor came to the decision it was a heat rash, Sandra wasn’t convinced and didn’t take the prescribed pills – just in case they came out in the drug test. “I wasn’t risking all that preparation for him getting it wrong,” she jokes. Travelling on her own, a nervous but excited Sandra Keith made it to Cyprus where she met her male counterpart Peter Hodson, who won the men’s New Zealand singles title. She joined him on the green in the sweltering heat, where she rolled a few up to see how her gauge was. “I went out there and the first bowl landed a
metre behind, and then the next one was a foot behind and I thought ‘this is too easy’. I picked it up and I thought it was just unreal.” After a few nights rooming with Zimbabwean Jane Rigby, Sandra started to sleep a bit easier, realising she was within a shot of actually winning it. No-one was landing their bowls as handy to the jack as she was, she admitted it just all seemed to good to be true. “I had these expectations that everyone was going to be perfect at it, but in reality there were only six countries that would win it on their skills.”
Sandra cruised through, only losing to Malta’s Carmen Spiteri, who she later went on to dismantle in the semifinal. However, Sandra was a bit dubious about her opponent, especially with what happened earlier that day. Falling over on a median strip on her second day in Cyprus, Sandra grazed her knees badly on the road. “On the day of the semifinal, coming back from breakfast, the guy representing Malta goes ‘Sandra, Sandra I have got pills for your knees to stop them from hurting’. And I thought that was a bit dodgy, I did it four days earlier and now you’re wanting to give pills to someone you’re up against in the final.” Sandra passed on the pills, and passed through her Malta opponent, thrusting her into the final. Sandra would have been happy just making it through to that point, but she was driven to make the trip worthwhile. Ironically up against her roommate from Zimbabwe, Sandra put down one of her most consistent displays of the tournament, getting out to a strong start and keeping the pressure on to smother her opponent. And with a handy lead that could not be caught, Sandra was suddenly a world champion. “It was a great, great feeling,” she said, struggling to find the words to explain how she felt at the time. 8 “And going back to what I said before, that was another opportunity I wished mum and dad saw, the only thing I regret on the whole trip was mum and dad and my family and friends not being there to see it.” When Sandra went back to her room that night, hundreds of texts awaited her. All the hard-nosed bowler could do was “cry and cry”, overwhelmed by what she had just achieved. She was a world champion. And Sandra’s winning streak doesn’t appear to be ending. Just over a month ago, she combined with Serena Matthews again, this time for Dunsandel, to give her another Canterbury title, and then going on to win her second national pairs title. Her schedule has been beefed up by a wave of invitational events at the weekends, and even Sandra still finds it a little difficult to come to grips with her new status. “I came back from the worlds and a few people beat me in club games and they were over the moon. I’m happy for them, because they are happy, but I have come to realise you can be champ one day and chump the next, but I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing.” With no desire to leave Ashburton, Sandra will shift her focus to March where she will represent the Black Jacks for the first time against Australia and put herself forward for next year’s Commonwealth Games. And after that who knows what Sandra might do, she is just happy doing what she is doing.
Back in the real world, Sandra Keith works in the spay booth at Ashford Handicrafts.

ayna Hurst’s creative side has won when it comes to career choice. The 26-year-old was brought up in Ashburton and left at the age of 18 to go to Dunedin and study psychology and computer science. While there she worked for Idea Services, in a children’s respite home looking after those with autism and epilepsy. She then found a fulltime job, and for six months worked with patients with mental illness and intellectual disabilities. After six years in the southern city she came back to Ashburton almost two years ago to be closer to her partner Chris and near her family, taking up a position in office administration and IT at Stocker Dairy Services. “It’s completely different from what I was doing,” she said. She has also started a home-based graphic design, advertising and website construction business she has called Dreamadesign. Website creation was one of her interest papers at university. She believes that subject and the other things she learned while at university and working in Dunedin have given her many skills for her future career. She intends to finish her degree, of which she has only a couple of papers remaining, through Massey University. However, whether she returns to work in that field has yet to be seen. She thinks she will stick with her full-time job and her business, and she particularly enjoys the creative side of the latter. She said many of the businesses she was working with were new themselves. “It’s quite interesting, helping them grow and helping myself grow at the same time,” Dayna said. She enjoys working from home, where she has the company of not only of partner Chris, but her almost one-year-old Bella, the lab huntaway cross. “I’ve always got to be doing something and it’s something I’m interested in,” she said. Divine dahlias

Jeanette and husband John have taken their love of dahlias one step further and their Hinds property is the national trial ground where new varieties are grown and tested for their suitability for show or home
By Sue Newman
T
o say that Jeanette Cuthbertson is passionate about dahlias is an understatement. Arrive at her front gate and yes, there are plenty of dahlias growing and thriving in her street side garden, but it is not until you step out back that the full extent of her passion – or obsession – is revealed. Not content with just a handful of each variety, Jeanette has gone one step further. Her Hinds garden is home to more than 500 varieties each different in form, colour and size. “A lot of people would call us fruit salad growers. In some countries they grow 30 or 40 of the same variety, but we have half a dozen of everything,” she said. She’s an accidential grower, starting out more than 30 years ago when an aunt was cleaning out her garden and gave her a handful of tubers. Today’s large-scale garden just grew from there, taking on a life of its own. There’s a lot to love about the dahlia, Jeanette said. “They’re reasonably cheap to buy and they last a long time. You’ll get flowers from December until the first frosts arrive so that makes them good value. I guess that’s why you’ll find them in so many home gardens.” When you love dahlias as much as Jeanette, then you also love sharing those plants with others. She’s a show bench regular, competing in the North Island nationals in Levin last weekend and when the South Island nationals open today, her blooms will be staged along with hundreds of others. Achieving perfection on the show bench is no accident. Plants destined to be show bench bloom producers are grown under cover. They’re given a little extra love and attention and their unfolding from bud to bloom is watched with care to ensure they’re cut at optimum time to achieve perfection when they’re up for judging.

Passionate about dahlias, Hinds woman Jeanette Cuthbertson.
The requirements are tough – usually three blooms of each variety exhibited and each must match the other to perfection. And with shows you’re talking big numbers, Jeanette said. “I took about 12 vases to the North Island show but to Ashburton I’ll be taking about 50.”
Multiply that by three and that’s a lot of flowers, each one picked at the right stage in its development to ensure it is at a perfect stage when viewed by the judges. “With dahlias that’s not quite so hard as they hold well and some can even take a month to come out.”
gardens. It’s interesting and rewarding work, Jeanette said, and quite often some spectacular results are achieved. “People send us three tubers of the same plant, we grow them and then they’re judged to see if they’re up to standard. They come in to us as tubers and we have no idea what we’re going to get.” Some trials result in a successful new cultivar, others in an also ran that might at best find a place in a home garden, but some are consigned to the scrap heap. Often the Cuthbertsons are the happy recipients of tubers from those trials. Jeanette and John are also involved in hybridising but on a very small scale because of the time involved; they’re happy to spend most of their time growing dahlias for show, to give away or simply to admire in their garden. And you never tire of the excitement of watching your garden unfold every year, she said. “We still come out here first thing every morning to have a look around and to see what’s coming into flower,” she said. When your garden is filled with dahlias it’s inevitable you’ll have favourites, but for Jeanette that changes from year to year. Favourites are not always the rare, show bench stars, they’re as likely to be a bloom that may never be a national champ. It all has to do with the way the flower’s colour and form catch your eye.

There’s more to dahlias than the spiky pink blooms that are found in many home gardens; professional grower Jeanette Cutherbertson’s garden is home to more than 500 varieties.
Like most growers, their garden also tells a story of their family and friends. New cultivars they’ve hybridised are names, often for people they know. Jeanette’s obsession doesn’t stop with growing, showing and the odd bit of hybridising. She’s also a big supplier of flowers to Christchurch’s Ellerslie Flower show. The florists call, order specific numbers of blooms in very specific co-

lours and she delivers. And there’s a quiet kind of pride in knowing it’s your flowers that make some of the top floral displays eye catching, she said. “Last year I supplied about 200 whites and peachy colours and this year it’s pinks. I felt quite proud when I saw my flowers up there.” She’s the national secretary for the national dahlia association and that means she’s on the road for most of the show season. Showing dahlias and keeping the paper work for the
national society on track is just part of what she does. In the world of dahlias she’s an expert, but she’s never happier than when she is sharing her knowledge – and her tubers and flowers – with home gardeners, but for her the ultimate is just pottering around in the garden. “I can happily spend all day out here and quite often I’m still in the garden at nine o’clock at night,” she said. Jeanette and John are happy to share their knowledge and share their plants. They’re not precious about what they have and say watching other become captured by the beauty of a dahlia bed in full flower is ample reward.
The Cuthbertsons are most definitely a partnership when it comes to dahlias. John judges, but Jeanette admits she doesn’t have enough time to add that to her bow. “I only judge my own flowers and I’m tough on them when it comes to showing. However, I do like to show things for the public to view. We used to chase all the big prizes and awards but now we limit ourselves a bit.” They might be one of the largest growers of dahlias in New Zealand but they say the welcome mat is always there for people who want to visit and view. That’s where the real pleasure is, in sharing what you have and what you love, Jeanette said.

The story of
Mick By Jonathan Leask
P
eter Pratt drives a Morris Minor with a Morris Minor trailer. It sounds like a tongue twister but is more of an eye catcher. The story goes to script starting with the car and followed by the trailer, the story of “Myrtle and Mick”. The Morris Minor, the full car Peter affectionately calls Myrtle, was bought locally at the start of last year. “It was sitting on the side of the road by the bridge for sale, where you’re not allowed to sell cars any more,” Peter said. “I drove past and saw it sitting on the side of the road and just decided I liked it. I wanted it.” Peter picked up the Morris Minor and then came across the trailer, or at least the idea of it.

“I was looking online at a Morris Minor magazine and there was a picture of one in England. I just decided I could build one.” That was the beginning of the intriguing trailer. “I just picked up an old Morris Minor, brought it home and put in in the garage where I took to it with the angle grinder and went from there. “There were no plans or guidelines to show to do it. It was a case of the “I’m sure I could do it” approach. “It wasn’t as hard, it was actually quite easy to do.” Peter’s method was simple but could have had complications. “It wasn’t until I had finished cutting right through, straight through everything including the steel, wiring and even the fuel lines, that I opened the boot and realised it had fuel in the tank which could have been interesting. “I had cut it just about right in half. I stripped
out anything on the car that could be used and took the rest to the scrap dealer.” Once it was cut in half the job with the remaining half wasn’t done, it still needed to undergo the transformation from car to trailer. “I had to get one of my mates to do all the welding because my efforts wouldn’t have been up to standard. “I did all the finishing though and it took 11 coats of paint.” The finished product Peter called “Mick”, named after his welder, and Mick gets a lot of attention. “It gets a lot of interest. People stop and ask me about it but a lot of them don’t believe that it actually used to be half of a car.” For the non-believers, Peter has evidence. “The doors still work and it still has got the seats in it. They are just for show and can be taken out. “When I need it to it functions just like a regular trailer.” The Morris Minor is a new experience for a long-time car enthusiast but one he always wanted. “I hadn’t had a Morris Minor before but I have had a few sports cars. “I first had a Morris 8 Sports car but the best I had was an Austin Healey which I really wish I had of kept because it would be worth a bit now. Then I had a (Ford) MK III Zephyr convertible. “I’ve had some cars along the line but now that I’m 70 it’s more of a hobby than anything and I always wanted a vintage car.” Peter has his vintage, a vintage and a half.
