Fame might be fine, but when it comes to fortune, opera star Simon O’Neill says his lies in his family – wife Carmel and children Tom and Grace, 4, and 14 month-old Violet. He talks to reporter Sue Newman about his two lives, one singing on the world’s stage and the other at home in Auckland with his family.

Simon O’Neill:

Balancing opera

with his little superstars

S

imon O’Neill might be one of the world’s most instantly recognisable opera stars, but for him the stardom he cherishes most is being a great dad to his kids. While he might spend most of his working life je ng from one corner of the globe to another, the Auckland based singer gave himself his longest holiday in years pre-Christmas, to head back home to Ashburton. With his wife Carmel, twins Tom and Grace, 4, and 14-month-old Violet, Simon was happily se led back into his

childhood home with mum and dad Brian and Gay, enjoying being just another dad hanging out with his kids. “This is my longest holiday in years and I’m so excited. I just love Ashburton,” he said. Back home, Simon is just Simon. He admits he’s s ll a small town boy at heart. Today he might call the world of interna onal opera his stage but Auckland is the home of his heart, the place his family lives; London is their second base.

“London’s not really my cup of tea. Here in our li le Auckland bungalow the kids can run round barefoot all day and Tom can be Spiderman all day. There it’s quite different. We’re slowly doing our bungalow up and I’m singing my li le socks off to pay for it.” During the year Simon spends more me away from home than he does at home, but he goes to extraordinary lengths to slot in me with his family between singing engagements. Last year he made 22 flights back to New

Zealand, some mes just for a two- or three-day stopover. That’s Simon today, but for the first 18 or so years of his life Simon O’Neill was just another Ashburton kid, involved in the rough and tumble of growing up in a rural town. He says he wants nothing more than that same grounding experience for his own children. “Of course I had some dodgy moments as a teenager in Ashburton, but that was just like all teenagers. I loved my childhood with all my mates, all the kids from school. We had some great years.” As a child, there was nothing to mark Simon out as special, who as an adult would go on to become an interna onal star.

6 He went to St Joseph’s School and Ashburton College, played rugby, played in the silver band and like many kids learned to play the piano. Looking back it was as close to an idyllic childhood as you could get, Simon said. His parents were musical, played the piano and sang. They decided playing the piano was something their sons should also do. “I was sent to Mrs Perkins on Racecourse Road. I was never gi ed with music but I loved it and I worked hard. I look at the people in shows like X-Factor and they have huge talent. I wasn’t like that. Some of these young kids are phenomenal.” At nine he joined the silver band and that became his first love affair with the world of music. He also credits the band as giving him a solid background and training. Later, by default he became a church organist. “I was an altar boy and I hated it. The only way I could get out of that was playing the organ at church.” But it was at Ashburton College that Simon was encouraged to sing. He joined the Phoenix choir and in the 1980s music was incredibly strong at college, on the back of a group of skilled teachers, he said. The Phoenix choir led to the New Zealand Youth Choir and along the way par cipa on in a host of school musicals. He was also in a couple of rock bands, but throughout those years, his burning ambi on was to make it into the New Zealand Army Band. “I started singing very late, in the sixth form at prizegiving. I’d never really sung a note solo before that, but I look back and see how much those choirs did for me. They opened doors for me, exposed me to so much. We were all trained so well. Those things really fed into this music career.” That early training was so broad that today Simon said he could as easily conduct an orchestra, play in rock band, strum a guitar or play an organ as he could stand up and sing a role in an opera. Some opera singers sing, they do not read music. Not so for Simon. “I read music like other people read books,” he said. While he chose opera in which to carve a career, inspired by his youth choir days of singing music wri en by great composers, Simon knows he would also have enjoyed forging a career in musical theatre. In the O’Neill family there were no free rides. As soon as he was old enough, Simon was expected to work, a er school and in his school, and later, university holidays. “I worked at the Fairton works for six years

while I was at varsity. I started on sweetbreads, that was a shocking job, then moved on to the chain and the cooling floor. I finished up in the foulmongery.” He credits those years at the works with ensuring he completed two degrees without accumula ng any debt. “I used to work at the Shell service sta on from midnight un l 5.30am, be out at the works by 7.30am, home at 4.30pm and then I’d sleep un l midnight. That was my life in the summer holidays.” During those years he annoyed his fellow workers and rugby players by singing at work and while he was playing rugby. For one opposing varsity player that singing became too much. During a scrum he punched Simon on the nose to silence him. It did. He fi-

nally realised he had to make a choice, singing or rugby. And in choosing singing, Simon put himself on track to meet his wife,Carmel. She’s an impressive soprano, he said, and a lawyer with a big reputa on as a partner in a London law firm. Her career, however, is on hold – temporarily. Today Simon is hot opera property. And that sees him constantly travelling as he’s invited to be part of performances in the world’s top opera spots with the world’s top opera companies. “There are only a handful of people at my level now and I’m so fortunate,” he said. Even in tough economic mes true opera fans are s ll happy to shell out to watch opera, o en as much as one thousand pounds a seat. A recent opera in which Simon starred sold out in just 30 minutes. He charges a fee for performances, but when

he’s in rehearsal that’s considered unpaid work. Most operas involve about four weeks of rehearsal ahead of a two- or three-week season. For him, singing is not all about money and several mes most years he’ll perform free of charge for causes dear to his heart. This year he’s performing with both the Christchurch and Wellington choirs and orchestras in the pre-Christmas Messiah. His life might sound glamorous, but when you spend between nine and 10 months of the year overseas on your own, it’s anything but. Yes that me is broken with trips home – 22 last year – but inevitably living out of a suitcase in an anonymous hotel is a pre y lonely business, Simon said. When he travels, he packs a folding bike in his

7 suitcase. He’s ridden around most of the world’s major ci es and said riding serves the double purpose of keeping him fit and occupying his down me. His career s ll has plenty of years le to run. At 41 he’s just into the big opera years. “Your voice is a bit like good wine, it gets be er with age in the big operas I do. If I’d opted to be in a rock and roll band I’d have been done and dusted by now.” When it comes to his personal taste in music, Simon loves rock, Dolly Parton and Whitney Houston when she was at her best. Recrea on is a foreign word, his spare me is family me. That’s the pivot around which his life revolves. He’s been offered a range of pres gious appointments and he’s on the faculty of music at

Victoria University. “I’m very spoiled. People ask me to do things and I usually say ‘yes’. One of the big things in my life is that I always say ‘yes’, but I do have to be careful with my me.” Simon believes his greatest talent has not been his voice, it’s been his ability to work hard. The world of professional music was tough when he entered it and it’s even tougher today for the next genera on of youngsters coming through. “It’s extremely difficult to get into. The cream of talent never really changes. There’s always the percentage who never make it and then you get people like me who are close to it but who work hard. My success is all down to hard work. I was never the best at any of the things I did but I worked hard at most of them.” The harsh facts, however, are that for many

talented kids, even hard work is not enough to bridge the gap between them and the handful who have the excep onal talent that will take them to the top, Simon said. “It’s cruel and it’s hard, the professional music business, it’s always been like this.” He might be one of the world’s most highly rated tenors, but Simon doesn’t talk himself up. “I’m not Dame Malvina or Dame Kiri. They’re icons. I’m just in the middle somewhere. Their voices are supremely beau ful.” New Zealand has always punched above its weight when it comes to producing outstanding singers, Simon said. “I spot some amazing talent. Our talent is way higher than most other na ons when it comes to classical singing. It’s Iceland and us who put out the top level opera singers. Maybe with us,

it’s our can-do a tude. New Zealand is actually the dream. You can be anyone in this country and make it. In England you’re always caught up in what school you went to, the whole blue blood thing. In New Zealand you get there because you’re good.” The sacrifice for Simon in being world class at what he does is the amount of me he spends away from his family, but he believes that together he and Carmel have come up with a compromise that works. “I’d go mad if I didn’t do this, make all these trips back home. I miss my family so much. Carmel is essen ally a solo mum with three kids; I’m there on Skype but I’m not really there. We do everything we can to make sure our kids are absolutely totally grounded Kiwi kids.” Before children Simon and Carmel were totally career focused, but that’s all changed. “My life now has different priori es. All I can think about when I’m away is ge ng home to my kids. I look at Carmel who was this big, hotshot lawyer and now she’s the greatest mum in the world.” For the O’Neill family the summer sojourn will end quickly. Late on Christmas Day night, Simon flies to Munich to begin rehearsals two days later, for the opera The Valkyrie. His manager takes care of his commitments and already 2013 is almost fully booked. “My life is planned out already to 2017–18. I know where I’ll be singing. This is my job, but one day my dream is to do six months away and then six months around the Pacific singing. That would be superb.” Also on his dream list is singing for an All Blacks match. He has strong feelings about our na onal anthem and how it should be sung. Forget anything fancy, just sing it straight and sing it from the heart, he said. He’d also love to be part of a huge outdoor concert in New Zealand. Unlike many opera singers, Simon doesn’t exercise his voice every day. He quite o en takes a break and goes cold-turkey for a week or so. “My voice now is pre y fit. I speak in a way that doesn’t damage it. The worst thing for your voice is to be in a night club where you have to shout. I don’t go. I’d rather listen to a jazz trio.” Over his career Simon has sung in every one of the world’s top opera houses and had sung every great tenor role before he was 40. “That’s something I’m very proud of, but I’ve worked hard to do that.” He loves what he does, loves singing, but above all he loves his family. He sings his children to sleep when he’s home and is proud that Tom and Grace can both hold a tune. “My kids are my life,” he said.

shburton Airport was a base for training Royal New Zealand Air Force fighter bomber pilots during World War Two, a me that Jim Chivers remembers well. On the first day of flying from the base in October, 1942, Tiger Moth aircra flew over the town in the morning. Jim was aged about 12 at the me. He looked up to the sky, and asked his mother if he could take the day off school. “So I could bike out to see these aeroplanes. She said ‘no, you are going to school’.” While it was disappoin ng for the aircra enthusiast, he could at least con nue to see Tiger Moths in the skies over Ashburton during the next two years while the RNZAF base con nued to operate. The base trained 1200 pilots during that me, and there were 60 aircra there, so almost every day there was a Tiger Moth flying over the town. Four years a er that day Jim had another opportunity to get out to the aerodrome. During the war the Mid Canterbury branch of the Canterbury Aero Club closed down, but a er the war it re-opened and on its first day of flying again offered Tiger Moth joyrides at 10 shillings. Jim had seen an adver sement in the Ashburton Guardian, and he biked out to the airport full of expecta on. He was not disappointed. He liked the feel of flying in the open aircra , the smell of the aircra and everything about being in the air. “You really knew you were flying in those days, because the cold wind used to fly down the back of your neck and down the leg of your pants,” he said. He joined the aero club and set himself the task of learning to fly. His wage at the me was one pound and five

shillings per week. Lessons were three pounds and 10 shillings per hour. He opted to take a 20-minute lesson every fortnight, cos ng one pound and three and four pence. This meant he spent almost a week’s wages on each lesson. In real money terms it is cheaper to learn to fly today with it cos ng about $200 for a lesson. It took him 12 months to learn to fly solo, and it has been a hobby of his ever since. Working as a car painter and panelbeater in Ashburton, Mr Chivers brought up two sons in

the town with wife June. Today they have three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Flying is a hobby he has been able to enjoy with his children and grandchildren over the years, taking them for flights. But he admits they have not always been taken with the concept. “I took one of my grandsons flying, he was only a li le fellow, about two years old, and he promptly fell asleep on his dad’s lap, he didn’t think much of it,” he said. Jim’s interest in flying and aircra led to him become one of nine people who got together in

1974 to form the Ashburton Avia on Museum establishment commi ee. He said the organisaon today had 400 members, more than 25 aircra and three buildings worth over $1 million, owned freehold. “I walked around there the other day and thought I never dreamed in 1974 we would have anything like that,” Jim said. Jim is a regular at the museum, helping with its day-to-day running as it opens seven days per week. He has flown in commercial aircra on

overseas trips and in pre 9/11 days visited the cockpit of one. He said the co-pilot had a book open on his lap and said to the pilot that a course change was coming up. The pilot leaned forward and pushed a bu on, causing the aeroplane to take a new course. Jim did not see that as real flying, with the aircra responding to the push of a bu on. It was not at all like flying in a light aircra , where “you are in control of the aircra the whole way”, he said.

From Fiji and America

to Ashvegas

sk Kelly Gilson to compare New Zealand, America and Fiji, and you’ll get a varied response. That’s because the American-born Ashburtonian has lived in all three countries and experienced many different phases of her life in each of them. She met her husband in America during her Masters study, she spent most of her childhood growing up in Fiji and spent considerable me in Dunedin studying at Otago University. But now, she’s found Ashburton and with her husband Tom Gilson and their two children, they are calling Mid Canterbury home – at

least for now. “We take each day as it comes, but we are very happy in Ashburton and I think Tom is really enjoying the slower pace of lifestyle. “He comes from Chicago, so you can imagine it’s quite a change for him, but he loves it,” she said. Her husband Tom, be er known in the community as a popular maths teacher at Ashburton College, is enjoying the transi on. As for Kelly, she is juggling full- me motherhood and carrying out ministerial du es at her local church – pu ng her Theology Masters to good use. “I’m enjoying that, but I think the place needs more energy ... more families. “What I am seeing is a lack of young families

coming to church and we need to encourage more along,” she said. The couple have se led in to the community fast. On arriving in January, Kelly and Tom found people with similar interests through the Mid Canterbury Newcomers’ Network. “We have met a lot of our friends through that network and as a new person or a new family to town, it is great to be part of that – I can’t recommend it enough. “We have found them an amazing help and everyone really looks out for each other, which is great,” Kelly said. In their spare me, the couple try and get around Mid Canterbury to see the sights. They are hoping to get away during the sum-

mer for a break, before Mr Gilson returns to teach in 2013. Rela ves have already been over to visit and feedback received about their new home in Mid Canterbury had been overwhelming. The mix of cultures has impressed Mrs Gilson, who has a strong interest in different na ons. The couple s ll have strong contacts in Fiji and occasionally get back over to visit. “I was par cularly surprised to be honest how mul cultural Ashburton and Mid Canterbury is as a place, it’s quite special. “We have a very diverse town and I think that is great,” she said. “We are all really enjoying our me in Ashburton.”
