4 Hayden Roulston is a professional cyclist. But there’s more to him than just cycling. On a recent trip home to Ashburton from Europe, he sat down with Erin Tasker and talked cycling, family, fatherhood, love, run-ins with the law, and, of course, doping.

Hayden’s precious

moments A

s Hayden Roulston watches his son Moses playing outside on a sunny Sunday morning in spring, a big smile creeps across his face. Moments like this at his mum’s Ashburton home are precious, because they are few and far between. Moses is the light of the Ashburton-born professional cyclist’s life, but living on the other side of the world for much of the year means he misses out on a lot. It’s enough to make him consider giving up his career, packing up his life in Europe, and coming home to simply be a dad. But he knows Moses wouldn’t want that. “When you go through the hard times, like all the crashes I have, no matter who you are … if you’re Dan Carter or whoever … everyone has their down times; that’s when you think about what you’re doing. Many times I have thought about giving it all up and coming home and just being a father,” he said. “I don’t think he (Moses) would like it when he got older though, if I quit because of him.” Ask three-year-old Moses where his dad lives and he answers, “Spain”. Ask him what his daddy does, and he says, “rides a bike”. He’s right, but what he doesn’t yet comprehend is how good his dad is at riding a bike. He’s got silver and bronze Olympic medals in his collection, along with many other titles and accolades, but at 31, Hayden still has plenty more he wants to achieve before he packs the lycra away for good. There’s something missing from his collection – a gold medal. He knows it will come, one day.

“I don’t care where it comes from, but it’s going to happen,” he said. The competition is tough. Hayden is one of a large number of talented riders in the current Bike NZ crop. He found that out the hard way this year, missing out on a berth at what would have been his third Olympics. New Zealand’s two road race spots were filled by Greg Henderson and Jack Bauer. Jack went on to finish 10th. Hayden was disappointed to miss out, but at the same time was happy for his countrymen. “We are all friends. It’s never like we don’t want anyone to succeed, no matter what is said in the media. We all live in Girona and we are all friends,” he said. His Olympic omission came hot on the heels of missing out on a place in his Radioshack Nissan Trek team’s Tour de France line-up. They were two major disappointments, but Hayden still counts 2012 as one of his most consistent seasons, and one he hopes to build on next year. He will spend Christmas and New Year at home with his family, before heading back to Europe for another long season of training. Finding balance when your two main focuses in life are cycling and fatherhood, isn’t easy, especially when the two are based on opposite sides of the world. Moses lives in Christchurch with his mum – who Hayden is no longer with – and although they talk regularly on Skype it always takes time for Hayden to settle back into his son’s life on his trips home.

But just because he’s not around all the time, it doesn’t mean Moses has free rein when he does get to spend time with his dad. When he’s with Hayden, there are rules, but that’s just the way it is. Moses has a bike, and could well be a chip off the old block. But just because dad was a top cyclist, it didn’t mean the pressure would be on Moses to follow in his footsteps. “He doesn’t need to cycle; it’s a bloody tough sport,” Hayden said. “But I definitely think he will do something, I mean he’s got something special in him. “But if he’s a bum and does nothing, then that’s the way it is.” The life he lives makes it hard to be a dad, but it makes it even harder to be a boyfriend. Hayden admits he’s had some “amazing girls” in his life. But his lifestyle had made maintaining relationships difficult. In the past he’s tried to spread his energy three ways – between cycling, Moses and a girl. But something always had to give and it wasn’t going to be cycling or Moses. “Cycling is a bloody selfish sport. To be good at anything there’s a selfish aspect,” he said. So for now, Hayden is single. But he’s happy that way. ycling was in Hayden’s genes, but it wasn’t always his sport of choice. He was a latecomer to cycling. Initially, his love was the BMX, along with other sports including rugby. Pretty much he was into anything but cricket. Continued next page

He had to work for what he wanted, and said he couldn’t have got to where he is today without the support of his family – dad Brian, mum Kay and younger sister Paula. “We are not a wealthy family but I always had what I needed. Whether it was from someone else or, back in the day, it was probably taking money out of the mortgage or something,” he said. His family has been rewarded for that support by seeing Hayden’s success first-hand. For mum Kay that has meant trips to both the Athens and Beijing Olympics, and even aunts and uncles have followed him to some of the big events of his career. Two trips to the Olympics will always stand-out in Hayden’s memory bank. He attended both Beijing 2008 – where he won silver and bronze on the track – and Athens 2004. But one of the most memorable days of his career remains signing his first professional contract.

He was flown to Paris to sign on the dotted line with Cofidis – the start of big things for him. “No-one from New Zealand had ever signed with a professional team by going over there and doing it by themselves,” he said. He’d had a goal though, and he had the drive to achieve it. He saw what former top Kiwi rider John Ownsworth had achieved and wanted to do the same. John was influential in helping Hayden get to Europe and get into his first amateur team. When he arrived in France, Hayden was paired with what he called an amazing family. “They looked after me like a son and even now I saw them this year at the Vuelta. I’m still in contact with them,” he said. Before Europe, Hayden had been away on cycling trips. He’d attended the Oceania championships and had gone as far as the junior world’s in Cuba. Those trips were with teams though, so Europe on his own was a completely different kettle of fish. It was a new part of the world, and he didn’t speak the language. It was a big learning curve. But he learned, and he grew. Hayden’s had his fair share of bad luck in his career. From a punctured lung in his younger days, to the many crashes he’s had on the bike, and the off-bike dramas like assault convictions and a career-threatening heart complaint. He’s not ashamed to talk about the trouble he had with the law, but maintains that with the “big assault” that he didn’t do it. He said the evidence was stacked up against him, but he didn’t do it. Looking back, it was all a part of growing up. It changed him as a person, he said. “I’m totally fine with it now. It made me realise

I’m not indestructible,” he said. Not long after that, came the diagnosis of arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD). At just 25-years-old, it appeared to have ended his career, until a chance encounter with a Reiki practitioner on a night out while Hayden was drowning his sorrows. Hayden was on about the fifth night in a row out drinking. He was depressed. His future Reiki practitioner was at the same pub that night, working her magic on a drunken friend who was not feeling well. Fellow Kiwi cyclist Marc Ryan was there too and he asked what she was doing. When she told him, he explained he had a friend with a heart complaint and suggested she could help him. The following day, Hayden had his first treatment, and he felt different. The rest is history. He reckons his Reiki practitioner was intuitive; she told him she saw him winning again. Six weeks later he was back on the bike and winning at nationals. Hayden couldn’t believe it, and neither could New Zealand. He’s had no heart problems since, and he knows people are sceptical of his miraculous recovery. “I definitely had a problem. I just found a way to deal with it, understand it and overcome it, much like people do with cancer,” he said. Hayden said he had a good relationship with the media, but that relationship was really tested that year. Media were waiting for him when he made his court appearances. He was an Olympian and he was in trouble. He was news. Television cameras were also there, capturing the moment Hayden was wheeled out of hospital in a wheelchair to break the news that

He said the general population didn’t recognise him, unless it was an Olym Olympic year. He’s experienced things that not many get to though, and he’s going to put it all down in print one day soon. “I’m going to write a book one day to show peopl people that you can go through so much and come out the other side,” he said. Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles, and received a lifelong ban from the sport. Hayden is a big supporter of drug-free cycling, but still looks up to Armstrong. “Lance is my idol and he always will be. He was the best in the business at everything back then, and that included doping,” he said. “He was a champion cyclist, he was the best at training, psychologically he was just so mentally strong, and he had the best coaches. “And he came back from cancer. Anyone involved in doping – cyclist or manager – had to be banned from the sport, he said. Doping had plagued cycling for so long now, that some may look at Hayden and question whether he’s given in to temptation. And he said he could have used performance enhancers it if he’d wanted to. But he didn’t.

The Bennetts’

argaret and Dick Bennett’s garden is a happy place. It’s a garden made for pottering, one where it’s easy to feel at home and one where it’s all too easy to lose yourself and all sense of time. Ask Margaret. She admits there are days, when the weather is warm, that she’ll be in the garden by 7am and still be there when darkness falls. She might take the odd break for a meal but when there are plants to tend, time somehow slips away. The Bennetts have lived at the same address for 45 years but their home has grown and changed around them; their garden with it. The little old cottage has been transformed into a two storey family home that Margaret and Dick say they’ve no intention of leaving and their garden has morphed from a basic patch of dirt to one that has rewarded them with countless trophies in annual Ashburton Horticultural Society competitions. Flowers are Margaret’s speciality, vegetables are Dick’s. “We won our first award, the best display of flowers in 1985 with our little garden in front of our little old house and over the years, we’ve won basically every category in the competition,” Margaret said. Her dad was a competitive gardener and his parents were great gardeners too. Margaret

reckons she’s genetically programmed to garden. Dick on the other hand has been a reluctant convert, he admits he was pushed into it initially. Today, however, he’s as enthusiastic about growing things as his wife. Over the decades they’ve gardened on their patch, trees have come and gone, fashions in flowers have changed, but a few things have endured, such as Margaret’s passion for fuchsias. They’re firm believers in trees in an urban garden having a limited lifespan. “Too many people plant trees in town sections and they get too big. Not all trees are suited to town gardens, it’s a continuous, changing process when you’ve got trees and shrubs,” Dick said. Stripped bare of its colourful summer display of annuals, he describes their garden as having a good framework, but one that looks quite basic. Add the annual plant out of annuals and everything changes. Margaret’s not one to plan too rigidly. For her, plantings just happen. She doesn’t play favourites, she plants what takes her fancy. Some bedding plants are raised in her tunnel houses, some are bought in. “I get the plants and then I just find somewhere to put them. Each year we think about not doing this, but as long as we live here we’ll garden like this. It suits our house and we’ve made it this way.”

Dick and Margaret Bennett taking a break in their urban garden that contains happy surprises at every turn. Pride of place for Margaret is taken by her large collection of fuchsias that grow happily in several tunnel houses.

The way to get the best out of your garden is to consider the space you have available and then to use plants that will take advantage of that space, Dick said. In mid season the front garden when viewed from the street, is a blaze of colour, but it’s out back that this garden really comes into its own. There are several tunnel houses that are home to Margaret’s vast collection of fuchsias (she knows them all by name) and several glass houses, some growing tomatoes, others growing frost tender vegetables and flowers. Dick’s vegetable garden is vast. If you can think of it, it’s growing there. The bounty from the Bennett garden spreads beyond Margaret and Dick’s kitchen. Family benefit and so do friends and neighbours. For them the pleasure is in the growing and the giving away as much as it is in the eating and squirrelling away the

surplus for winter. Their garden, front and back, is a reflection of a lifetime of pottering. They’ve never bothered about what’s in fashion and what’s not, they garden for pleasure. “It’s a labour of love, decades of it. I used to put the garden in in the spring and dig it out in the autumn, but after 55 years I’ve learned to love it,” Dick said. And they’re not great fans of minimalistic modern gardens, particularly not en masse as often happens in new housing developments. Natives are great, but so too is variety, Dick said. Natives, however, come into their own in gardens where water is an issue, he said. There are no secrets to having a good garden, Dick says, but there are a few things he swears by – home-made compost, a solution

of seaweed and water that matures in the back yard, worm compost from the Ashburton Abbatoir and his own worm farm. Hoeing the soil after watering and rainfall are also important for moisture retention, but most of all, just enjoying what you’re doing, he said. They both say that gardening groups are a great way of gaining knowledge and swapping plants. Margaret’s taken her interests one step further; she not only belongs to the fuchsia society, she is also a qualified judge. They’re enjoying watching the resurgence in vegetable gardening among younger people but say while they understand demands on individuals’ time, they’re disappointed few are interested in joining gardening groups and clubs. “We’ve become the grey-haired brigade,” Margaret said.

BY SUSAN SANDYS B Hanne married husband Grant, originally from Christchurch, when she was 28 after meeting him in the lucky country. Grant was a meat inspector, and as such was transferred around Queensland on a regular basis. Once they had children they did not want to have to uproot the family every couple of years, so decided to move to New Zealand. Ashburton’s Hanne Badger is originally from Denmark and moved to the Southern Hemisphere at the tender age of 16. She knew only a little English, so had a big challenge ahead of her to learn the language as she settled into her new home in Queensland, Australia, with her parents and older brother. “I suppose I saw it as a little bit of an adventure,” she said. At first she went to a special English language school before attending secondary school. Despite the settling-in period it was a culture shock. “In Denmark we didn’t have to wear school uniforms and didn’t have to call teachers Mr and Mrs, it was first names,” she said. And she was fascinated with the quirks of her new language. “Turn with care” road signs said when she was learning to drive, she thought it was turn with car, so it puzzled her. And gift in Danish is poison. “They have completely different meanings

The colder South Island temperatures were a shock after the balmy conditions of Queensland. “It was the summers I found the hardest, sometimes you get a summer, sometimes you don’t.” Today their children are aged 17 and 15 and are both doing well at Ashburton College. Application and effort certificates for both adorn the family room wall in the couple’s beautiful home.

“It’s certainly good to see they are working hard,” Hanne said. Hanne enjoys her part-time job of home support work, undertaking cleaning and other work for elderly in the town, and her hobbies include maintaining her large garden, playing badminton and doing circuit training. And Hanne has not forgotten her home country. Every Christmas she bakes traditional Danish marzipan and makes authentic biscuits and sauces. She has porcelain art and folk paintings from her Danish grandmother in her home, and took her family to visit relatives in the country in 2007. She said she missed the atmosphere of a white Christmas, but not the long cold winters. “Over there you have a bit more time to concentrate on Christmas. It is not the time of year for planning holidays and you don’t have to do stuff in the garden.” In the midst of winter it did not get light until 8.30am and was dark by 4pm.

Mary had a little lamb fries and a Coke. THE SERIOUS LAMB BURGER. A seriously succulent lamb patty, topped off with egg, beetroot and gourmet salad, all served on a soft white bun.

othing confirms that summer has arrived more than the sweet smell of basil. The ancient herb is the perfect partner for fresh summer foods and is inextricably linked with tomatoes as a food match made in heaven. No matter how small your garden, there’s always room for a few basil plants and if the garden fails, then the aromatic herb will thrive (with a

little TLC) in a pot on a sunny windowsill. Basil might have come into its own in recent years as a popular culinary herb, but it’s origins stretch back more than 5000 years to India and other tropical regions of Asia. There are many varieties of Ocimum basilicum, as well as several related species or species hybrids also called basil.

Basil pesto 2 packed cups basil leaves 2 large cloves garlic, crushed ¾ C good-quality olive oil ¼ C grated parmesan ½ t salt ground black pepper ¼ cup toasted pine nuts or walnuts (optional) – Purée all ingredients together in a food processor until smooth – Sart adding oil once the mixture forms a fine paste – Store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks – Freezes well

The most commonly used type is sweet basil and it is a key ingredient in Mediterranean cooking. Basil matches well with cheese, chicken, duck, eggplant, eggs, fish, lamb, liver, olive oil, onions, pasta, pesto, pizza, pork, potatoes, rabbit, salads, shellfish, soups, sweet peppers, tomatoes, veal, vegetables, vinegars, zucchini, tomato sauce.

Corn and basil cakes 1/2 C all-purpose flour 1/2 C low-fat milk 2 large eggs 2 T canola oil, divided 1/2 t baking powder 1/2 t salt 1/4 t freshly ground pepper 2 C corn kernals 1/2 C chopped fresh basil – Whisk flour, milk, eggs, 1 tablespoon oil, baking powder, salt and pepper in a medium bowl until smooth – Stir in corn and basil – Brush a large nonstick skillet lightly with some of the remaining 1 tablespoon oil – Heat over medium heat until hot (but not smoking) – Cook 4 cakes at a time, using about 1/4 cup batter for each – Cook until the edges are dry, about 2 minutes – Flip and cook until golden brown on the other side, 1 to 3 minutes more – Repeat with the remaining oil and batter, making 10 cakes

17 Salmon with basil and tomatoes 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 t salt (divided) 1 T extra-virgin olive oil 1 side of salmon 1/3 cup plus 1/4 cup thinly sliced fresh basi 2 medium tomatoes, thinly sliced Freshly ground pepper – Preheat grill to medium – Mash minced garlic and 3/4 teaspoon salt on a cutting board to form a paste – Transfer to a small bowl and stir in oil – Check the salmon for pin bones and remove if necessary – Coat large double layer piece of foil with cooking spray – Place the salmon skin-side down on the foil and spread the garlic mixture all over – Sprinkle with 1/3 cup basil – Overlap tomato slices on top and sprinkle with the remaining salt and pepper – Transfer the salmon on the foil to the grill – Grill until the fish flakes easily, 10 to 12 minutes – Serve sprinkled with remaining basil

Sweet basil chicken 6-8 chicken drumsticks 1 bulb garlic 2 large handfuls of fresh basil, roughly chopped 4 large tomatoes, quartered 2 T clarified butter, or regular butter melted. salt pepper – Preheat the oven to 180°C – Break apart the garlic bulb and smash each individual clove with the back of a knife – Peel the skins and discard – In a large baking dish, arrange the chicken drumsticks, tomatoes, and garlic – Scatter the basil on top – Sprinkle generously with salt and pepper – Drizzle with the butter, then bake in the oven for 1 hour until nice and golden

Mint and basil rubbed leg of lamb 1/2 C packed fresh basil leaves 1/4 C packed fresh mint leaves 1/4 C packed fresh parsley leaves 2 T toasted pine nuts 2 T grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese 2 T extra-virgin olive oil 1 clove garlic, peeled 1 teaspoon salt, divided 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 1 2.5kg leg of lamb, boned and butterflied. – Preheat oven to 350°F – Place basil, mint, parsley, pine nuts, cheese, oil, garlic, 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper in a food processor and process until fairly smooth – Sprinkle lamb all over with the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt – Reserve 2 tablespoons of the pesto; spread the rest over the top side of the lamb and roll it closed – Tie kitchen string around the roast in five places; do not tie too tightly or the pesto will squeeze out – Rub the reserved pesto over the outside of the lamb and place in a roasting pan – Roast the lamb about 1 hour 20 minutes – Transfer to a cutting board; let rest for 10 minutes – Carve the lamb, leaving the string in place to help hold the roast together

ny time is a good time to install or check your smoke alarms, and by choosing the right alarm and position in your home, it is the ideal DIY job. There are two main types of smoke alarms – ionization and photoelectric. Ionisation alarms monitor the ions, or electrically charged particles. Smoke particles enter the sensing chamber, changing the electrical balance of the air. The alarm will sound when the change in the electrical balance reaches a certain level. Photoelectric alarms have a sensing chamber which uses a beam of light and a light sensor. Smoke particles entering the chamber change the amount of light that reaches the sensor, and the alarm sounds when the smoke density reaches a preset level. Ionisation alarms are cheaper and generally more responsive to flaming fires where photoelectric alarms are more responsive to fires that smoulder for a long period of time and reduce nuisance alarms by cooking or steam. The New Zealand Fire Service recommends households install photoelectric smoke alarms as they provide more effective all-round detection, alarm in all types of fire scenarios and are more likely to alert occupants in time to escape safely.

Shane Woods installs a fire alarm in an Ashburton home. Smoke rises so install alarms following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Shane Woods Ordinary Kiwi bloke Shane ‘Woodsy’ Woods is handy around the house with a hammer. Each month we’ll check in on what his latest DIY project has been.

Each type of alarm has different advantages. Home fatal fires, day or night, include a large number of smouldering fires and a large number or flaming fires. You can not predict the type of fire you may have in your home or when it will occur. Any smoke alarm technology must perform for both types of fires in order to provide early warning day or night and whether you are asleep or awake. For the best protection, it is better to install both types of alarms or a combination alarm (ionization and photoelectric) in your home. In my opinion landlords and homeowners should take responsibility for the safety of the home’s occupants the same way a driver of a car does with seatbelts, and as a minimum install smoke alarms in hallways no less the three

metres from a bedroom door to alert anybody sleeping. There is a lot of conflicting information as to where it is best to install alarms, but let’s face it, chances are if there is a fire during the day and you are awake you have more chance of noticing a fire than if you are sleeping at night. So install where everyone in the house can be awakened by the sound of a smoke alarm. Ideally install alarms in all bedrooms and outside every sleeping area on every level of the home. Smoke rises so install smoke alarms following the manufacturer’s instructions high on a wall (four to 12 inches) away from the ceiling, or ideally a ceiling at least four inches away from the wall. If you have ceilings that are pitched, install the alarm near the ceiling’s highest point. Try avoiding cooking and bathroom areas due to steam and try to avoid log fires. If you are bent on installing in or near these areas consider alarms with hush buttons to reduce the sensitivity for a short period of time, which is surely better than removing the batteries. Don’t install smoke alarms near windows, doors or ducts where draughts might interfere with their operation and never paint smoke alarms. Paint, stickers or other decorations

could keep the alarms from working. Hard-wired smoke alarms operate on your household power. They can be interconnected so that every alarm sounds regardless of the fire’s location. This is an advantage in early warning, because it gives you extra time to escape if you are in one part of the house and a fire breaks out in another part. Alarms that are hard-wired should have battery back-ups in case of a power outage, and should be installed by a qualified electrician. If you sleep with bedroom doors closed, have your electrician install interconnected smoke alarms in each room so that when one alarm sounds, they all sound. Have a fire escape plan. Be aware sleeping children don’t always wake when a smoke alarm activates. Every home fire escape plan is different, and every family should know who will – and who won’t – awaken at the sound of the smoke alarm. If someone doesn’t wake up when the alarm sounds during a drill, the family should design an escape plan that assigns an adult who is easily awakened to wake the sleepers, perhaps by yelling ‘FIRE’, pounding on the wall of door, or blowing a whistle. Keep safe everybody. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
