Former research and automotive engineer James McKenzie took a large pay drop to enter the ski industry. YOU’s Susan Sandys talks to the Mt Hutt Ski Area manager about his relatively new career and how it fits in with family life.
Skifield manager LOVES LIFE ON THE HUTT
I
t’s 8am on Mt Hutt after 45 centimetres of new snow. The snow is good news, but throws a curve ball into the start of ski area manager James McKenzie’s day. There will be guests suffering severe snow fever, needing to get on that fresh snow straight away. But chairs need de-icing, outside access areas need groomer clearing and avalanche blasting is still under way. James, or JMac as he is referred to by staff, has been on the mountain since 5am, and is getting a workout alongside other staff banging chairs on the quad chairlift with metal poles as they rotate through lower station. Ice flies into the air like sharp rocks and anyone getting close needs to be careful they don’t lose an eye. It is hard work and one of the staff temporarily stops in pain; her hands are cold and she is exhausted. Skiers start to mill about and by 9am are queueing up at the bottom of the quad, some grumbling that the Summit Six is not open yet. One man questions a staff member and tells his fellow skiers they should have gone to Ohau.
Later in the morning James is called by staff to someone demanding to see the manager and he heads off to deal with the problem. Today James left Methven around 4.30am, drove up the access road and checked for any tyre tracks or footprints in the fresh snow which would indicate there could be people getting in the way of avalanche blasting. In touch with ski patrol on the mountain, he gives them the all clear. The first explosion was at 4.45am, following ski patrollers placing a long-fused bomb above the road. This snowfall has created a particular risk for avalanches, because of wet snow and hoar frosts. Blasting undertaken and the road cleared, James heads up and co-ordinates the effort to open. By 6am he had called in a 30-strong team to de-ice lifts, and set about recording that day’s snow-phone ski report, telling skiers, ‘yes, Mt Hutt would be open’, and chains would be required on all vehicles due to the new snow. He also updated the ski area’s website page with that day’s report. One thing staff arriving on the mountain
early for the day did not have to worry about was de-icing the chairlift’s towers. James had tried something new the night before, getting overnight staff to run the quad chair all night to stop the towers icing up. It was a low cost of just
$20 per hour in electricity to run the chair unloaded, so was deemed worth it if it meant being able to get the lift open on time. It seems like almost a full day’s work before morning teatime for James, and when he grabs a hamburger and a coffee at 10am he does look tired. The Summit Six is soon open and that is when James is able to relax. “Once everything is in place you can get on to the day-to-day jobs,” he said. It is a Thursday so there will be operations meetings with staff, and he hopes to head home at 3pm when general manager operations James Urquhart takes over. It is a big day and it doesn’t seem to make sense that one of the reasons he chose employment in the ski industry was so he could spend more time with his family. James had his own engineering consultancy firm at Oxford before he applied for a job heading operations, called the mountain manager, in 2007. He and his family had been on the road in the North Island as James undertook a contract up there. His wife Debs saw the job advertised in a newspaper’s situations vacant column, and she told her husband it • Continued over page

sounded just the ticket for him. When he got back from the North Island he flicked an email to Mt Hutt’s human resources department to ask if he could get an application in late. He soon had an interview with the then manager of the skifield, Dave Wilson. He was recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon and hobbled into the interview room. He was also recovering from the flu, and suspects Mr Wilson may not have been convinced he had the physical capabilities required for the hands-on job. “I think he was a little bit concerned,” James said. But after further discussion and another interview, Mr Wilson informed James the job was there for him. While it meant going from running his own company, and a drop in salary to one third of his current pay packet, James didn’t have to put too much thought into whether he would accept. The opportunity of working in the mountains, living in Methven (far more picturesque than Oxford), and the relatively family-friendly hours had him sold. As James prepared for the job, Mr Wilson took him up to the ski area to look at some pipe work which kept splitting and failing, and to have a general look around. Mr Wilson also took the opportunity to introduce the new second-in-command to a big group of staff there on the day, and told James to say something to them. “I hadn’t even signed up and I was standing in front of the staff. What do I say to these guys, do I tell them I know nothing about skiing and ski areas? I had a blank moment,” James said. “I was very concerned that the first impression I had given wasn’t very good, so I was very keen over the next few months to gain some ground in some respects.” That wasn’t easy, however. Still recovering from his Achilles tendon surgery he could not put on a pair of skis. And, despite having been a skier, snowboarder and mountaineer, he had never skiied at Mt Hutt. “I think people were starting to ask questions about me,” he said. Ultimately he was able to save face and put on a pair of skis, even though his first runs on the mountain were off the magic carpet. He resigned himself in that first season to being helpful and learning as much as possible. The following year
he became more confident and began to look at processes in place and how to improve things. After four seasons at Mt Hutt, James took up an opportunity with the same employer, nzski.com, at Queenstown, where he became general manager of technical operations. He and the family sold up the Line Road home they had built and moved south. They had been there one year and were looking for somewhere to build when Mr Wilson resigned as Mt Hutt’s ski area manager. James jumped at the opportunity to manage Mt Hutt, doubly attracted by the associated benefit of being able to move back to Methven. “It wasn’t a difficult decision for us to move back,” James said. Queenstown had been a spectacular location, but its suburban setting full of commuters and people who lived behind high fences was no contest for the community feel of Methven. “In small rural towns, you do get to know people and you do feel as though you are part of something.” Before going to Queenstown he had met a lot of Methven families through his role as a cub leader. On their return James and Debs bought Whitestone Homestead in Methven and today live there with their sons Josh, 6, and Ben, 11. The home’s front lawn and verandah face out on to Mt Hutt, and from the second storey James can see the mountain in all its glory. At night he will often look out to the moving lights of the ski area’s groomers. Wife Debs is a human resources manager employed by FarmRight. She works from home, as well as in the company’s Lincoln office, two days per week. James said it was good that the couple now had common areas in their jobs. Whereas previously he was engineering and she was people, now his job was far more people orientated. James was christened JMac by others in Mt Hutt’s senior management team about three years ago to distinguish him from other James in the team, including Mr Urquhart and Jim Giller. He is fine with the new title, and in April this year started signing his emails with the name. The 41-year-old was born in Cypress, moved to Twizel with his family when he was young, before going to Tokoroa

slopes, they are exhausted by 3 o’clock,” he said. In July this year he was driving around the skifield on a snowmobile at 7am when Ben noticed 25 keas flying above their heads. The father and son could still see the moon, and the snow was turning pink around them as the sun rose for the day. “It was a truly spectacular sight,” he
said. Being in the outdoors in such a magnificent location, and being with his family at the same time - it doesn’t get much better than that for James McKenzie. PH TO PH PHO O TET TET TSU SUR S URO MIT U ITOMO ITO O 11 110 1 1091 912 12-TM 1 TM M-0 --03 0 037

He met his English wife and went into engineering consultancy. He and Debs moved to New Zealand in 2006, where he continued with some automotive consultancy and also undertook hydro consultancy work. James said his career change to the ski industry had been the right move. The best part of the job was seeing staff (there is a pay roll of 230 in the winter) work through some of the challenges and the fact no day was the same. “There’s always something interesting going on up here, something challenging.” He was involved first hand in the case of critical injuries to skiers, where he would communicate with next of kin, but there had not been any serious cases so far this year. Ninety-five per cent of those airlifted so far had been discharged the same day. The injury rate on the skifield was the same as the rest of the ski industry, about three-and-ahalf injuries per 1000 visits. He likes to take Ben and Josh to work with him on non-school days. “We drive up together and hit the

The 22-year-old works nine-and-ahalf hour days for Geoff Read Limited, travelling to building sites near and far, and has recently been to Nelson, Omarama and Glenavy. “I would rather be outdoors than in an office,” he said. Corey is undertaking a certificate in concreting and is looking forward to becoming qualified in the trade. To the suggestion he works long hours, he said “no, just 7am to 5pm”. That’s a fair day’s work in his book. As tradesmen look north to opportunities presented by the Christchurch rebuild, Corey plans on staying put, in Ashburton, the town he moved to about four years ago for work. “I never liked Christchurch,” he said. He has been with Reads for three years. He said the firm had plenty of work lined up, and was “flat out with dairy sheds”, 12 already for this coming season. “I enjoy the work really. You have got to, there’s no point working there otherwise.” Corey is from Dunedin originally, and tries to

He had a “stuffed back” after tweaking a nerve at work. His GP had referred him to a physiotherapist the previous week, but he admitted he was a typical bloke in that he was not in a rush to make the appointment. “It won’t be next week. from work – chill out and have a beer. He would take his one-year-old huntaway Blue for a walk. When it came to the weekend, he and his flatmate would tidy up around their Netherby house and section, and catch up with mates. “I had the whole project down in the garage, (with) an off-road buggy,” he said. He had bought it for just $170 and would take it down the Ashburton River, but was not really getting the time lately and was trying to sell it. Hitting the town was something he would do sometimes, but it was not a regular pastime, too expensive, he said. He had been there, done that, in his teenage years.

“I could easy spend $300, by the time you play the pokies.” He would be participating in National Crate Day though, an initiative started by The Rock radio station which sees beer lovers host their own backyard gatherings on the first weekend of December, and bring their own crates. There are 10 commandments of crate day, and they include “thou shalt not drink warm beer”, “thou shalt wear the attire of National Crate Day – a black singlet, stubbies and jandals”, “thou shalt only use thy crate as furniture”, and “thou shalt support the crate of origin, drink the beer where you came from”. Cory and his friends and workmates would light up the barbie, and always abide by the latter rule. It was easy for Corey, as he was from Dunedin and Speights was his ale of choice anyway. “Poor bastard if you are Waikato,” he said. As for his goals, he said winning Lotto was top of his list. “Big Wednesday would be nice at the moment.” Meeting a nice girl would also be good, but there was still “plenty of time” for that. “I’m in no hurry really,” he said, with a laugh.

Go Moroccan –
all that’s savoury yet sweet
T
hink Moroccan food and lamb is probably the first meat that comes to mind, lamb cooked until meltingly tender and flavoured with a fine combination of spices that tease the palate. Moroccan cuisine, valued for its texture, flavour and versatility, is a melting pot of influences from all over the world, to create a distinctive style. The Moroccan tradition incorporates slow cooking and a huge range of different spices; also less obvious combinations – such as prunes figs and apricots. The classic dish, a tagine, commonly uses lamb from the neck, shoulder or shank, slowly braising until the meat is buttertender. Traditionally Moroccan dishes include such spices as cinnamon, saffron, ginger, turmeric, cumin, paprika and pepper, which combine to produce wonderfully aromatic dishes that complement the succulent texture of slowcooked lamb. ueen Victoria ascended by mule and Mark Twain came especially from America in order to scale this peak – without any assistance. “The mountains were not bare and foreboding but covered in a green both soothing and pleasing to the eye,â€? the author noted. “They were sometimes so steep, indeed almost perpendicular, that it was impossible to imagine how anyone could keep a footing. There are, however, paths on the slopes which the Swiss go up and down every day.â€?

from the Rigi summit
“The Rigi has been one of the most popular excursion destinations since the 18th century,â€? says Hans Osterwalder, who heads the local tourist authority. Whether on foot, in a litter or on horseback, adventurous travellers were keen to tramp up the mountain and view the legendary sunset from the highest point, Rigi Kulm. As then, the Rigi towers still majestically above Lake Lucerne. Rising to almost 1800 metres, the Rigi summit maintains its reputation among the Swiss and visitors from all over the world as being a unique and relaxing experience that oers incomparable views of lakeland mountains and scenery. From up here, the panorama encompasses
“Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail Ralph Waldo Emerson
almost the entire who’s who of the Swiss alpine world, including the celebrated triumvirate of Jungfrau, Eiger and Moench. The countryside around Rigi also oers 120 kilometres of trails, paths and muletracks, which can be used to explore an area bounded by Lake Lucerne along with Lake Lauerz and Lake Zug. To get the feel of this highland world, it is a good idea to start o by taking one of the easier paths. The rack railway has been taking visitors to the heights since 1871. On its way to Vitznau, on the northern shore of Lake Lucerne, the Rigi Kaltbadbound train passes through lush alpine meadows carpeted with wild flowers. From here passengers can alight before embarking on a panoramic hike lasting between four and five hours. The glimpses of Lake Lucerne from the steep slopes of the Rigi peak are seldom less than breathtaking. The natural spec-
tacle is particularly impressive in the early morning, when the landscape is often draped with banks of mist. Only the mountain peaks can be seen above the clouds and their snow-capped tops are bathed in dramatic light as the sun gains in altitude. Within a short time the curtain of clouds is torn asunder to give a grand view. The lakes are like liquid blue eyes in a sea of natural green. Before long the sun’s warmth disperses all trace of cloud. It’s worth hiking to the actual summit, and from Rigi-Kaltbad it only takes two hours on foot. An attractive path leads to the Felsenkapelle (rock chapel) and on to the Kaenzeli lookout point. From here, hikers can gaze down on the city of Lucerne and its local mountain, Pilatus. After a short ascent to Rigi Staelhoehe, the path follows the trackbed of the Vitznau-Rigi railway and wends its way to the Rigi summit through colourful alpine meadows. – DPA

N
ow that the weather is on the improve, we can venture out and start that exterior painting. The main differences between exterior and interior is the variety of surfaces and the paint is more expensive due to the UV qualities, and containing more pigment for colour and more resin for moisture resistance and durability. With proper preparation, a clean surface and the right paint it is a job you can easily handle yourself, making it the ideal DIY job. The best time to paint is now before it gets too hot as too much heat makes your surface dry out too quickly, which may cause the paint to fail. Ideally paint just after sunrise when the dew has dried off, follow the sun around your home and paint on the shady side. Paint manufacturers recommend painting in temperatures between 10°C and 40°C and not in direct sunlight. • Continued next page

Above – As with any good paint job, it starts with good preparation and a good waterblast is a great place to start. Left – Replace or fix any defects before you start painting.
Like interior paints, exterior paints are available in either water-based or solvent-based enamel. Water-based paints offer a number of advantages as they are easy to apply, dry rapidly and there is an easy clean-up. Acrylic gloss paints are commonly used on weatherboard homes and exterior cladding as a gloss finish offers more durability and longevity. Generally solvent-based enamel paints are preferred wherever a tough hard-wearing surface is required. It takes a little extra time to apply but can be well worth the trouble on high wear areas like windows and doors and it means they are less likely to stick. As with interior enamels the trend is leaning towards water-based exterior enamels which come in a variety of sheen levels, dry fast and offer easy water wash-up. As with any new product, technology is improving all the time, as will their longevity. But among the trades, debate between waterbased and solvent-based paints is well and truly alive. As with any painting job, you need good preparation. If you are lucky and your house has
had regular maintenance, it may only need a wash-down and a light sand, but if it has fallen short of attention it may require scraping back and sanding. Or if the paint has lost all adhesion it may require a chemical strip to remove all the old defective paint and start again. Waterblasting is a great place to start. The condition of the surface will dictate the pressure required and is the ideal way to see what defects require attention. Waterblast from the top down – the roof we will cover in a separate article – starting with the spoutings and facias then soffits and walls. Light wash over windows and doors squirting down, doing one side at a time. Include anything that is to be painted. Now is the time to replace any rotten, split or cracked boards or fix any defects that will affect the longevity of the paint job. Don’t be in a hurry to get painting. Attend to the defects – you will regret not doing it when the house is painted and looking fantastic, apart from those bits that now stand out and catch your eye every time.

rendan Patrick has owned all types of cars over the years, but a 1967 Camaro is his first American car. “I had a lot of Falcons over the years and was into the Mazdas for a while before that so this was a bit different,” Brendan said. With a change of car, Brendan noticed a change of scene. “It came with a different crowd. The Falcons have the Ford lovers and when I had the Mazdas they were more of a younger crowd’s car. The Camaro seems to attract a more mature following.” That is probably because the Camaro is a clas-
sic. He bought it a-year-and-half-ago and in that time has put some work into it. “It was pretty good condition but just needed a bit of a tidy up. I did the interior, the motor and gearbox, put a trim kit on it, disc brakes, mags and a new nine-inch differential.” A 500-horsepower 406 cubic inch-small block gives off the distinct rumble of a muscle car, a sound Brendan has spread across the South Island. “I’ve taken it all over the South Island with the kids in the back and wife in the passenger seat. Although she’s not that keen on being in the suicide seat.” That is the other thing about being an authentic American muscle car, it’s left-hand drive. “It didn’t take long to get used to.”
