Lynette Lovett knows what it’s like to have your life turned upside down. The woman who is this year’s senior vice president of the Ashburton A&P Show was left with a large farm to run after her husband Rod died 10 years ago. Lynette talks to reporter Sue Newman about thriving in the face of adversity, and about making the best of what life throws at you.

Caretaker for the

next generation

L

ynette Lovett stands and looks across the broad spread of farmland outside her front door and sees the future and the past. This is Lovett land and she’s part of a long rural chain stretching over five generations, but over that time she’s the only woman to have worn the badge of honour as “the boss”. It’s not a title she went seeking, not one she ever wanted. Rather it was foisted on her in the cruellest of ways, the death of her husband Rod at the age of 48. In the space of about two years the former dental nurse townie went from farmer’s wife and casual farm labourer to running the show, on the back of Rod’s increasing frailty and his eventual death from leukaemia in 2002. She’s been through some tough years, but she’s emerged stronger with her spirit intact and an unquenchable zest for life. Today, while she’s still very much hands-on as a farm owner, she suggests she’s now semi-retired, with son Phillip taking over the reins. In the late 1990s Lynette and Rod believed they were at a great place in their lives. Their three children were starting to find their own way in the world, the farm was running smoothly. It was their time. Rod was a workaholic but Lynette had finally persuaded him to take a break. They planned a lengthy

of farmers

trip to Europe. “Because he always worked seven days a week he was very tired when we left but he just seemed to get sicker as we travelled. A friend in Wales suggested he go to the doctor but Rod wanted to leave going till we got home.” When they returned to London he gave in. By then he could barely drive and his skin had taken on a yellow hue. That doctor’s visit changed their lives. “The doctor told him he was a seriously ill man and they sent a nurse out from New Zealand to bring us back. Rod went straight into the bone marrow unit at Christchurch Hospital and he didn’t come home again for six months.” For Lynette those six months are now a blur. Overnight she had to take over running the farm as well as travelling to Christchurch each day to support Rod who was in denial that he was going to die. During the two years he was ill Rod underwent bone marrow transplants that failed and countless blood transfusions and during those two years Lynette multi-tasked as farmer, nurse and wife. He returned home for a time and the Lovett family adjusted to living life in limbo. Their children Tim, Rachael and Phillip returned home from overseas for periods of time, but inevitably Lynette was the anchor that held the family together. “They didn’t know how long Rod would live and that was soul destroying. I was here with a sick husband, farm staff and I

was trying to run the farm.” Lynette might have been part of the farm team for years but, like many farmers, Rod had kept the farm’s knowledge bank in his memory rather than on paper and that meant Lynette had no records to guide her. She learned from that, and began keeping a farm diary. Every paddock, every crop, every irrigation cycle, they’re all documented. Year by year the diaries mount up and the written history of the farm is there for future generations. • Continued P6

6 After Rod died, Lynette was determined her children would resume their own lives and with the help of agents and advisers, she became the farmer. “A lot of people told me to put a manager on the farm and I did for a couple of months, but then I decided this was our business and I needed to learn how to run it myself.” Others suggested it would be better for her if she sold the farm. “I never considered that because I felt it wasn’t mine to sell, I was only the caretaker for the next generation.” After a year, Phillip came home from the United States and joined his mother in learning farming from the ground up. “I look back over the past 10 or so years and

realise this has been a hell of a learning curve for both Phillip and me.” Lynette’s determination to be a farmer saw her join a range of agricultural organisations where she could gather knowledge and take part in discussion groups. “I was the only woman in the discussion groups and I was younger than all the old farmers who were there, but we went, we asked questions and we learned.” Ten years down the track, Phillip and fiancee Anna run the farm with Lynette running the books. And 10 years down the track, it bears little resemblance to the farm of Rod’s time. Gone are the 2500 sheep and the old irrigators. In their place there is paddock after paddock of crop, huge lateral irrigators and a

very small number of sheep. “We decided if we were going to survive we had to turn the whole farm upside down and borrow a couple of million dollars,” Lynette said. Turning the farm upside down meant doing things that Rod and his dad Ralph would never have done – pulling out old plantations, creating laneways and changing from mixed to arable farming. “We lost Rod and his dad within a year and there wasn’t anyone around to tell us not to do it so we did. When he died we were at the stage where we had to start making changes in equipment and irrigation and I needed the challenge.” That challenge means she’s loaded with debt like most other farmers, but debt doesn’t faze

Lynette. “Life’s a challenge and you just take every day as it comes.” There were plenty of lighter moments too in those early days, such as buying new farm equipment. A woman walking into a farm machinery business and wanting to talk about combine harvesters always attracted a few funny looks. “The first thing I bought was a new drill and the guys just stood and looked at me, and an agent might come on to the farm, look around for the men and then realise it was me.” Looking back she says one of the toughest challenges in the years after Rod died was coping with the 2006 snowfall – 16 days without power. It’s also been hard having two family weddings. • Continued next page

“Rachael was married a year after Rod died and I gave her away. That was hard because I kept thinking Rod should have been here to do this. And then Tim got married and that was hard too.” Phillip and Anna will marry next month in the farm garden and Lynette knows that she’s emotionally prepared to deal with a wedding without Rod. She looks at her life now and says she’s happy and contented. She knows her decision to stay on the farm, to become the farmer, was the right one and she also knows that she’s made the right decision in starting to step back and let Phillip take over. “I still work when he needs me, but I have to do this. I admit I haven’t enjoyed stepping back but you have to do that to encourage the next generation, you have to let them have their time.” Lynette has no intention of leaving the farm, has no desire to return to being a townie. As it is for all farmers, succession is a big issue for Lynette. With three children, it’s all about being fair. “You can’t cut the farm into thirds so you have

to help them all out in whatever they want to do. The reality is that the one who steps into the farm is taking on a lifetime of debt. The kids all want the farm to stay in the family for future generations.” When it comes to who becomes the farmer, it has to be the best one for the job, Lynette said. “The important thing is for the farm to be here and for everyone to be able to come here and enjoy it. I could have sold up and walked out, but hopefully we’re setting up the farm for the future.” In spite of becoming a fulltime farmer, Lynette was determined she wouldn’t cast aside the things she enjoyed. She remained heavily involved in the Red Cross and is an area counsellor, and she is part of the Women in Arable organisation. This year she’s senior vice president of the Ashburton A&P Association and in the past has been an exhibitor in the home industries pavilion and in grain competitions. The show always played a big part in Rod and Lynette’s lives. “We got married in 1975 and we had to

come back from our honeymoon early for the God-damned show because Rod was working in the sheep pens.” Today she might be semiretired, but Lynette is as busy as she’s ever been. Her family has grown to include four grandchildren, she hosts overseas agricultural students, runs a farm-stay business and she works on the farm when needed. Life is busy, life is good, but it’s a different life to the one Lynette had planned. “Rod was only 48 when he died and that’s so unfair. You get married and you expect it to be for life, you don’t expect to be left on your own with a farm. Now and again I do think and hope he’d be proud of what we’ve done. It’s been a journey and it’s not over yet.”

Ashburton’s Marta Levitt was brought up in Brazil where she received her grounding in natural remedies.

arta Levitt’s path into natural medicine was one which took her back to the treatments of her childhood. Marta was brought up in Brazil, in a small town called Minas Gerais about 1000km inland from Rio. The name of the town translates to general mines, and it is where most of the world’s iron ore comes from, and many precious stones are also mined there. She said her father was “quite a remarkable man”. As a retired newspaper editor he ran a poetry magazine. Her mother was a post office worker who had six children and would cycle to and from work throughout the day, coming home to breastfeed. The family did not have much money, but there was a “sense of abundance”, surrounded by nature, space and natural food bought from local markets. Canned food was for special occasions, with spam in particular being reserved for festive events. Her mother’s grandmother lived with them and was a herbalist. She gave the children herbs and poultices when they were not well, and

arta’s

world of wellness YOU magazine writer Susan Sandys randomly chooses a number from the phonebook and tells the story of the person who answers.

EVERYONE HAS A STORY BY SUSAN SANDYS doctor visits were reserved for serious infections requiring antibiotics. “Everything was treated at home mostly,” she said. Marta undertook nursing training when she left school. “I got very disappointed with the system of nursing, the whole system of medicine seemed to be very focused on disease rather than wellness, and it’s not changed, we are still much more interested in diseases than wellness,” she said. And Brazil was a restrictive country at the time, with a military government, patriarchal system and censorship.

She decided to go “freedom chasing” in England. It was the 1970s, and around the beginning of a resurgence in natural medicine. In London she began training in a variety of practices which she has continued with over the years, including shiatsu, homeopathy, herbs, meditation, colour therapy, massage and yoga. She cooked in a famous London vegetarian café of the time, Sesame, cultivating her interest in macrobiotic nutrition. While in the city she had chronic bronchitis, and one of her flatmates who was studying homeopathy told her if she gave up smok-

ing he would give her small pills, which was homeopathic garlic, to cure it. “I tried that, it completely cleared my chest, and I never had bronchitis again,” she said. Marta’s faith in natural medicine is not out of place in today’s society, but in those days such beliefs were considered radical. She met her English husband Chris in the country, and when she was pregnant with their first child went to the doctor for a prenatal appointment at eight months’ gestation. She said the doctor asked her where her records were, and became “very cross” when she told him this was the first visit she had made to a doctor in her pregnancy. “I said ‘hang on a minute, people go to the doctor when they are sick, I’m not sick, I’m only pregnant’.” She would have preferred home births for both her daughters, but that was not a common practice in those days and they were both born in English hospitals. The family moved to New Zealand in 1980, and while Chris worked as a stock manager on a Mitcham farm, her energy went into their

young family. She grew organic food, milking a cow and goats, cooking, and learning to felt, spin and weave. Today Marta remains true to her roots in respect of natural medicine. She runs Healing Hands, a holistic and natural healing clinic in Ashburton, which she opened in 1990. She has continued to expand her clinical massage knowledge through training at the College of Natural Medicine in Christchurch, specialising in neuro-muscular therapy, deep tissue, muscle release techniques, and baby massage. She uses massage, breath work, mindfulness and body awareness in her treatments. She also teaches yoga and a new discipline she has developed called chigoa, which is a combination of yoga and chi gong, a discipline of harnessing energy into one’s body. She has travelled to retreat centres and engaged in intensive integrative yoga training with Savitri Devi, Sylvia Maine, and Joseph Le Page, considered to be leaders in the field. “It’s my passion to facilitate health and wellbeing, I use the body as the pathway into helping people,” she said.

lexia Kitrintzedes has a somewhat difficult surname to say, but her goals and ambitions are far more straightforward. The 19-year-old is living in Ashburton working as a nanny and living with a Kiwi family. She hails from a small town in West Germany, Dightenberg, a town that has fewer people than Mid Canterbury, but a place she proudly calls home. According to Alexia the transition has been strange to say the least, but she is loving every minute of her Kiwi adventure. “It’s really interesting, such a difference ... but good,” she said. “I miss home, but I am very happy what I am doing at the moment, so I only think of the now and I like Ashburton – it is really nice.” Alexia may miss home, but she has found home comforts with a fellow German native, Francesca, who is also on her gap year and living in Ashburton. “We always talk to each other and are there for each other, which is nice,” Alexia said. “It’s good to have that contact and we try and get to know new people through the

Newcomers group – which is a really great place.” Alexia looks after three-year-old Maggie and has formed a special bond. “I take her to kindy, swimming lessons, we go to the park and she has a play and we both jump around on the trampoline ... we do have a lot of fun,” Alexia said. “She’s a great girl and it’s going to be very sad to leave her when my year finishes.” Alexia’s adventure will draw to a close next year as she has big plans to gear up and hit the study books back in her homeland. She aspires to become a speech therapist, but hopes to one day return to New Zealand. “Leaving will be tough, but we will get through. For now, I just enjoy my time and do what I am doing – I really like that. “It is a very popular thing to do in Germany, take a gap year, but when I get back I must work hard and achieve my dream,” she said. And although her experiences in both New Zealand and Mid Canterbury have been short so far, this teenager does her best to find time at the weekend to get out and see the sights. “I have been up to the mountains to ski a few times, but I am only really a beginner. “It’s such a beautiful place and I’m very happy,” she said.

on’t fall off the fitness bandwagon when you pack the suitcase for your next holiday. It takes longer to gain fitness than to lose it, and you can quickly lose all of your hard-earned fitness gains if you stop exercising completely. How quickly you lose aerobic and strength fitness varies – it really depends on how fit you are to begin with, and how long you

13 stop exercising. For some, the loss of endurance will be noticed in about 12 days after eliminating cardio exercise. For strength training, a decline in your level of conditioning can be noticed in approximately two weeks. Flexibility decline is the winner – or perhaps the loser – when you abstain from your exercise routine; it decreases with just one week of inactivity. So don’t stop exercising while travelling.

Stay fit while you travel Here are some tips: – Fitness does not have to become a lost cause when you take a break and head out for an extended holiday. There are many creative and easy ways to keep those feelgood endorphins active. – For starters, wear your walking shoes so you will be ready to take advantage of delayed flights or, if you are travelling by car, take breaks for brief walks and stretches. – When packing for your trip, include a few basic light and packable pieces of exercise equipment that don’t take up much space in the suitcase, such as lightweight jump ropes and resistance bands. The bands, made of strong rubber, vary in resistance from light to heavy and can provide a workout for every muscle in your body. – If you’re headed to a warm climate, you might want to pack aquatic gloves along with your swimmers for a water workout.

Hotel room exercises – Don’t think in terms of an hour workout. After all, this is your holiday time. Instead, go for 10-minute segments throughout the day, building toward 30 minutes. Save the longer workouts for when you return home. – Warm up with five minutes of light jogging or marching in place.

Cardio exercises – Jump rope or simply pretend you are using a rope.

– Jog in place, lifting knees as high as you can, as high as you can. Hold five seconds, then while pumping your arms. lower. – Mountain climbers: With legs staggered, – Ankle circles: Stretch legs out under the jump or shuffle feet back and forth, seat in front of you. Lift one leg, rotating continuing to alternate feet. Hold onto a ankle inward, drawing a circle eight times; dresser or desk if you need support. reverse circle, rotating ankle outward. – Mogul jumps: With feet together, jump side Repeat. to side, always landing with bent knees. – Point/flex: Point toes downward, then – Jumping jacks or modified jacks, where you upward. You will be stretching the front of relax knees and step-touch side to side, raisthe leg with the pointed toes and back of ing arms shoulder height, but no jumping. leg with flexed foot.

– Squeeze tennis ball: Do this or at least pretend you are doing it, opening and closing your fists. – Abdominal exercise: Contract abdominal muscles, holding a few seconds, then release. This can be performed while standing or sitting. – Shoulder shrugs: Raise shoulders up and down slowly, making a circular motion, rolling them forward then to the back. – SHNS

Strength exercises – To save time, there are many multi-muscle exercises you can do. You will be working more than one muscle group at a time, such as with push-ups, which would strengthen upper body and core muscles. Don’t forget there are such things as wall push-ups, if you don’t want to go on the floor. – Performing squats (pretending you are sitting in a chair) will work most lower-body muscles. – Resistance bands offer no specific weight, but you can feel tension on the band, and if you perform them correctly, you can create resistance from many angles.

Exercises while flying Help rev up your circulation while confined in the sky by trying these: – Heel raises: Keeping balls of feet on floor, raise heels using the calf muscles. Hold five seconds before lowering heels. – Toe raises: Planting heels on floor, raise toes

ou either love it or you hate it; when it comes to blue cheese there seems to be no middle ground. Blue cheese can be made of cow, sheep or goats cheese cheeses that have had cultures of the mould Penicillium added so that the final product is spotted or veined throughout with blue, blue-gray or blue-green mould, and carries a distinct smell. Some blue cheeses are injected with spores before the curds form and others have spores mixed in with the curds after they form. Blue cheeses are aged in a temperature-controlled environment. The characteristic flavour of blue cheese tends to be sharp and salty.

Rogue and Storm are two very special labradors owned by Hamish George. As their names suggest, they are superheroes with extraordinary powers, but not because of some strange mutant superstrength. Both Rogue and Storm are blood donors. It is normally an emergency situation when blood is needed, following a severe injury or what seems to be more common, rat bait poisoning. Blood is essential - carrying oxygen around your pet’s body, contains important proteins that help your pet heal and also contains clotting factors to stop bleeding. If an animal loses more than about 30 percent of their blood, they die. Dogs don’t tend to react to another dogs’ blood unless they have had a previous blood transfusion – which isn’t that common! So, for blood transfusions in dogs we don’t normally have to cross-match the blood. Blood is collected from the jugular vein in the donor’s neck (under sedation) and can be stored for up to a month. Neither Rogue nor Storm mind donating blood too much and were pleased to get a tasty meal afterwards. If you have a medium-large breed dog and would consider having your dog added to a blood donor register, then please phone me at the clinic, ph 308 2321.

Fleas

With the weather warming up we have begun to see itchy pets again. The majority of itchy pets have a flea problem. Fleas like warmer weather but once your pet brings them inside, your house can become a breeding ground all year round. It is much easier to prevent this problem than to sort out a well-established flea infestation! Fleas are hard to find as they don’t spend long on your pet, but feed and then hop off again. Comb through your pets coat with a nit comb and place any fur and other debris on wet, white paper towel. Any black grains looking like sand that stain the paper red are flea poo and indicates that you need to treat your pet. Not all flea treatments are equal. FRONTLINE Plus spot-on, is easy to apply and rapidly kills fleas on contact (they don’t even have to bite your pet). It also helps control and prevent infestations of your home by stopping eggs and larvae from hatching. What makes LOUK NZ Clothing different from most other shops is that we only stock New Zealand Made brands. We believe it is important to offer our customers the highest quality garments we can and the only way to do this is to stock NZ Made. By doing this we are also contributing to the economy of our country and keeping Kiwis in work. Many people believe that our shop is mainly for tourists. That’s probably because of our location in the Old Post Office and near where many of the buses stop, but predominately our main customer base is from New Zealanders and our prices reflect that. We have so many great cafes and wonderful shops that Geraldine has become a destination town; excellent to come for lunch & a browse around the shops, for a girls weekend away or for a family holiday. We are thrilled to say that we have the largest range of Swazi Apparel in the South

Our Kitchen is open all day long serving breakfast and lunch any time before 5pm. After 5pm dinner is served offering Steaks, Shanks, Filo’s, Chicken, Burgers and more. Bring the whole family down and you’ll find there’s something for everyone.

From hunting or tramping in our amazing countryside, fishing in our great lakes and rivers, chilling out at home or stepping out at Cup Day. Our Merino/Possum brands include Noble Wilde and Possumdown, which also provides us with a great range of garments and accessories for men and women. Recently we have diversified into Linden Leaves skin care and hope to have a New Zealand Made jewellery brand in store very soon. When you first walk into the gorgeous boutique show room that is Talbot Silver, the first thing you will notice is the stunning array of contemporary and classic sterling silver, crystals and semi-precious stone jewellery it offers. Talbot Silver was established by the Talbot family more than 14 years ago. Dave and Min Mackenzie saw a fantastic opportunity to buy the well-known business when it appeared on the market, to add to it their already well-established gardens at Stover Farm. Stover Farm is a local icon north of Geraldine, and is constantly sought-after for weddings. Already this year it has played host to seven glorious weddings, and bookings for next year are coming in fast to secure the fabulous venue. Owners Dave and Min are thrilled with the fusion of the two businesses, and are pleased with the direction the business is heading. What sets Talbot Silver apart from other jewelers, is the impressive selection of locally made jewellery they have to offer. Min designs a lot of the jewellery herself, before going to jewellery makers in either Timaru or Christchurch to be lovingly crafted. She also imports many quality pieces from Italy. Talbot Silver jewellery is created from 92.5% sterling silver; this means the jewellery they produce is of outstanding quality that is set to last a lifetime, and with fantastic prices, a Talbot Silver collection item is a piece to be loved, that can be treasured forever. Alongside this Talbot silver can also create personalised pieces;

so whether it be a wedding band, baby bangle, 21st birthday bracelet, men’s jewellery, corporate gift or a vintage locket, Talbot Silver can provide an individual service to craft the perfect, unique piece for you. This weekend sees Talbot Silver host the Geraldine Summer Fete, featuring more than a 130 stalls. The impressive display of talent provides a great setting for a family day out, to browse local products and produce plus see stalls that come from further afield. The Geraldine Summer Fete aims to bring you a selection of New Zealand’s finest home, garden and lifestyle products together with the area’s quality local produce for a day of indulgence and elegance held at this spectacular South Canterbury property. Talbot Silver will have an elegant display of sparkling silver at the fete, and any other time you are visiting Geraldine, they welcome you to visit them at their boutique artisan showroom at Stover Farm. View their exquisite range of jewellery or browse the expansive grounds. Dave and Min are only too happy to answer enquiries regarding functions on the farm. For convenience, Talbot Silver are open seven days a week and are available after hours for personal appointments by prior arrangement. You can also visit their website www. talbotsilver.co.nz where you can tour their latest catalogue and make an order online. Talbot Silver, the timeless show-piece to be treasured for generations.

Geraldine Farm Shop and Café by Suzanna Macilquham For over 30 years Peter and Lyn McColll have been growing and supplying top quality produce to Geraldine and the wider community. It all started when they bought the orchard in 1982, the previous owners had made a start of the orchard but it was Peter and Lyn that made it into the thriving business it is today. Family is a big part of how this business works. In the 90’s their son was their truck driver servicing the Mackenzie country and their daughter is a sleeping partner of the Orchard and café today. It was a family decision to buy the property at which the Farm shop and café stands now. With quality their number one priority, they have an outstanding chef that chooses what goes on his menu depending on what is in season, also with qualified bakers on

site, making freshly baked goods daily, with no additives or preservatives, you know that the bread you are buying is top quality. The space is divided into a farm produce shop and cafe. The Orchard cafe offers Heartland coffee, menu and cabinet food, and features a schist-clad ambient fire, walls adorned with local art and seating for 55 people. Cabinet food included a variety of cakes and slices, savoury tarts, bagels and plenty more. They don’t just sell fruit and vegetables though; they stock a wide range of meats, yogurts, cheeses and real fresh fruit ice cream. So whether you want to go out and enjoy lunch at the cafe or find some new fresh and delicious goodies for the kitchen, Geraldine Orchard Farm Shop and Cafe is defiantly setting the standards for produce and service.

by Suzanna Macilquham When you first step foot into The Downs Bed & Breakfast, the first thing you will notice is how serene and peaceful it is the stress will instantly melt away. It’s no wonder Myron and Alycen Cournane love what they do for a living. Myron and Alycen Cournane first moved to Geraldine eight years ago from the hustle and bustle of their busy motel in Timaru. They saw a great opportunity to open a beautiful Bed & Breakfast in the stunning scenery of the Downs, Geraldine. “With us opening a bed and breakfast we had more time to interact with our customers and get to know them better rather than just checking them in, checking them out, like it was at the motel,” Myron says. Myron’s first step into the accommodation business was when he

owned a top holiday park in Te Anau. The Cournane’s then moved on to owning a deer farm, before moving to Timaru. Alycen has many years’ experience in the nursing and gardening business and when you see the stunning array of gardens around The Downs B&B you can see it is still a passion for her. The luxurious bedrooms all have stunning views and ensuites. To make your stay just that bit more special they have a guest lounge that is available 24/7 with tea, coffee and an open bar, at no extra charge to your stay. The Downs B&B is situated only 1.5km from the centre of the township, an ideal base for you to experience what Geraldine has to offer. So if you are looking for an unforgettable weekend getaway, be sure to stay at The Downs B&B.

Working

Juggling employment and life ambition with motherhood can be challenging physically, emotionally and financially, but as Debbie Boon has discovered, it can also be a rewarding adventure.

YOU women in business Most people recognise Debbie’s smiling face from being Tony Sands’ right-hand woman for many years with Harcourts, but it was years of education, determination and hard work that has led to her business success. Born and bred in Balclutha, Debbie’s parents moved to Ashburton when she was a young teenager, and owned an apple orchard on Racecourse Road. Debbie and husband Paul had two children, Gemma and Liam, so Debbie worked part-time for Cactus Jack’s, before taking up a full time position managing Tuscany’s when the children were slightly older. The family then moved to Perth in Western Australia, where Paul had the opportunity to work on different engineering projects. Debbie had decided that she wanted a change from the hospitality industry, because of the unsociable hours. “It was actually Paul that suggested that I get into real estate. It was something that I had talked about before, but it was his nudge that inspired me to take action. I studied to receive my real estate ticket and then worked for a real estate office in Western Australia for two years. I think then I had found my niche, I really enjoyed it. “When we came home I worked for

Ocean View as a property manager before becoming a personal assistant to Tony Sands. Paul was working long hours with Ashburton Engineering and I was working part-time in the office. The children were still young so the positions were able to be worked around family. “I was Tony’s assistant for five years, and as Tony’s success grew, the position became busier and busier, the hours longer and eventually we needed another person to ease the workload. When he retired from his position, I decided that I was ready to become an agent again. “Again it was my husband Paul who inspired me to take the all-important step to getting back into the real estate game. Unfortunately my real estate qualification wasn’t recognised in New Zealand, Western Australia was the only state where the qualification wasn’t transferable, so I had to re-sit the qualification. I did this while working for Tony, which enabled me to help with open homes and allowed the transition back into sales easier. “The decision was a fantastic one for me to take. It’s been hard work, but the results have made it very worthwhile,” Debbie said. As if the real estate position wasn’t challenging enough, Paul and Debbie recently purchased half of Ashburton Engineering to become joint-owners with

Debbie and Paul’s children are on the verge of starting their own lives, and as a mum, Debbie couldn’t be prouder. “Gemma is 20 and currently finishing a Bachelor of Architectural Studies, and is set to begin a position soon with Chilton + Mayne Architecture in Ashburton. She is a great netballer and I’ve spent many Saturday mornings on the sidelines cheering her on. “Liam is 15 and will be starting school with Timaru Boys High School shortly. He loves to ski and is pretty good at it, and is also skilled on his BMX bike,” Debbie said. Above all, Debbie always makes time to catch up with her friends for a coffee or a wine and enjoys socialising with friends and neighbours at Lake Hood. “Working hard is what has afforded us the luxuries that we enjoy now. The decision to move to Perth for a few years set us up to be able to return to Ashburton and buy a property at Lake Hood. “We visited Bali last month for a friend’s wedding, and we’re planning to take the family to the Gold Coast Australia for the Christmas holidays. It’s the extra hours put into working that allows us to treat ourselves and our family now, because life is for making the most of, and enjoying time with family becomes the priority.”

Paul’s parents, Mike and Maureen Boon, and shifted the business to its new location in Tinwald to allow for continued growth. Debbie has been working in the office since they moved back from Australia and continues to look after the administration side of the business, which has presented its own challenges as the demand for Paul’s engineering expertise increases. “The new location has been fantastic, with the increased traffic that we get down Lagmhor Road, we have picked up new business just from the added exposure to new clients. “The yard beside the workshop will later be developed as we plan to build a larger workshop, with height sufficient for large trucks and to allow us to fabricate large sections of steel as we continue to strengthen the growth of our structural work. “Since purchasing a share of the business, we have made some changes, to suit the way we like to operate daily. We have also hired two more people to keep up with the increase in demand. “The great part about having a financial interest in the business is that I can work my administration duties around my lifestyle and real estate position. We manage the business the way that best suits our lifestyle and our family,” Debbie said.

New Zealand Home Loans celebrated its official opening in Ashburton earlier this month, amongst an energetic crowd of local customers who are already experiencing benefits of paying off their home loans faster. Local franchise owners Richard and Sue Hopkins joined the New Zealand Home Loan team by initially opening a Christchurch branch in Riccarton. On February 23 2011, earthquake damage had forced them to consider other options, so they made a call to Ashburton’s First National Real Estate, who welcomed them with open arms to share office space in the Tancred Street premises. 20 months on and their new premises on Moore Street is open for business, with consultants from Christchurch available by appointment to

meet in the new Ashburton office. The secret to New Zealand Home Loans success is the ongoing effort to help clients reduce their debt as quickly as possible. From the inception, helping the average New Zealand family has always been New Zealand Home Loans priority. Its clients work closely with their New Zealand Home Loans Consultant, and in conjunction with its Debt Management System, debtnav, it shows them exactly where they are today, and how to manage their debt to get to where they want to go. New Zealand Home Loans CEO Mark

Collins is excited to become a part of the Ashburton Community. “We are looking forward to helping more Mid Canterbury families achieve their dream of owning their own home, and we really work with them to help them to achieve this faster. “Now that we are a part of the community we want to do as much as we can to give back. Shortly we will be recruiting for local staff, and we want to hear from local organisations and groups seeking sponsorship. Being a valuable part of the community is important to us, Mark commented.

Local man Andrew Pain contacted New Zealand Home Loans after experiencing frustrations with trying to obtain a home loan from his bank. “When I had made the decision that I was ready to look at owning a home, I contacted a few banks to see how they could help, but I found it took a long time for anyone to contact me back. “When I contacted New Zealand Home Loans I found them to be really efficient and helpful. They just gave me the impression that they really wanted to help me more, they gave me heaps of great advice, and I meet up with them every three months to discuss the progress of the loan. “The process was very easy. I couldn’t have asked for a better service.” Andrew said. Call one of the friendly team today, to find out how you can be in control of your own finances and really get ahead.

Off set

or redraw mortgage by John Moore Branch Manager NBS Ashburton

L

ast month I wrote about how to pay off your mortgage quickly, this was by paying it fortnightly or weekly whenever your pay period is. Another great way to save money on your mortgage and reduce the interest you get charged, is to see if your lender has an offset or redraw mortgage. This is simply an account that accrues interest and at the end of the month the accrued interest is debited off the interest that is charged on your loan.

This means you are charged less interest for the month and if you still pay your monthly amount required, it is like paying the amount of interest received on your credit funds off the loan as principal. This effectively reduces the term of your loan as there is less outstanding. Some people may say that they have a low interest rate on their mortgage and can invest at a higher rate elsewhere. This can be true, but what you must remember is that the interest that you earn on this type of investment will incur withholding tax while the interest in an offset account or redraw account doesn’t, so it is effectively a tax-free investment which reduces your loan.

The question now is what should you do? First ask your lender if they operate these types of accounts, if not find someone that does. Also ask if you can pay your mortgage weekly or fortnightly. If the lender gives you all this flexibility then you are on the way to having the type of mortgage that gives you the flexibility to repay it quickly and you’ll save money and build your own personal wealth. This gives you more equity and makes you stronger financially and it gives the lender greater comfort to be lending to a more financial savvy client. I hope you enjoy these tips. Take care
