Grace Sommerville competes on all stages from the national champs right through to Mt Hutt College’s swimming sports day.
Methven student Grace Sommerville has it all. She’s an intelligent young woman with a talent which could take her to the top of the world. ERIN TASKER spent time with the young swimmer and talked to some of the important people in her life.
A champion in the I
n many ways, Grace Sommerville is your typical 16-year-old girl. But your typical teen doesn’t live her life by the kind of schedule this potential world champion does. Grace is a top student and a top swimmer with aspirations to one day represent her country at the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games – and her coach reckons, come 2016 or 2020, those dreams could just come true. It will take a huge amount of commitment and balance – something Grace knows all about. She’s got the will and the drive to succeed. She in the pool from 5pm until 7pm five days a week, and stays away from home three nights a week because she also trains three times a week in the mornings, from 6am until 8am. And there’s only one reason why. She loves it. “If you didn’t enjoy it, you wouldn’t be able to do it,” she said. A typical day for her can start with a piano lesson at 8.10am – yes, on top of everything else she’s also been playing the piano since she was seven and she has lessons at that time because it’s
about the only time she can fit them in. Then it’s off to school at Mount Hutt College at 8.40am for the Year 12 student, for a day of learning before racing back to her Methven home to pack her bags for a night in Ashburton. Then she hits the road for swimming training. She’s wakes at 5.25am the next day and heads back to the pool for her 6am to 8am session, after which she drives to school. After school she drives back to Ashburton, and on this day she might have dry-land training to do from 4.15pm until 5.15pm and then she’s in the pool from 5.30pm until 7pm. After that she drives home – her third trip on the Methven Highway for the day – has some tea and goes to bed and reads for a bit before it’s lights out at about 10pm. And don’t forget that somewhere in there she’s got to find time for study. It’s enough to make some people tired just hearing about it. But Grace wouldn’t have it any other way. While many other girls her age are discovering their social lives and boys, and spending their summers partying, Grace is more likely to be found at the pool
powering through length after length as she strives towards her long-term goal, or at home studying. And hopefully one day she’ll be able to look back at her teenage years, with a gold medal around her neck, and know that all that hard work was more than worth it.
A
t 16, Grace has the world at her feet. She’s classed as one of the top 15 to 17-year-old swimmers in New Zealand. Her list of achievements within the past year alone is outstanding, whether it be at national, South Island or regional level. She picked up two fifth placings, a ninth and an 11th at the New Zealand open long course nationals, which doubled as Olympic trials. And while she didn’t make these Olympics, the pinnacle of sport may well feature in her future. Her coach, Carl Gordon, says if she puts her mind to it she could one day wear the Silver Fern at such a level. “She’s incredibly hard working; she’s working really hard and certainly deserves everything she gets,” Gordon said.
“She’s the kind of person who never misses a session and when she’s there she does everything to the best of her ability.” That hard work resulted in her selection for the Junior Pan Pacifics in Hawaii in August, as an open water swimmer, a trip Carl said was a step in the right direction. “We’ve got a lot of work to do and we are certainly looking at potentially 2016 for the open water, with a view to 2020, so we are looking a long way down the path to allow her to really develop into who she can be,” Carl said. Open water swimming has also become part of Grace’s repertoire in the past couple of years. It’s not for the fainthearted; in the pool the temperature is usually around the 27°C mark, but in open water races that drops to around 18 to 20°C. Despite the temperature difference it’s pretty much the same rules as swimming in the pool – including the apparel, with no wetsuits in sight. Swimmers raced over 10km and 5km distances, often faced with cold and choppy waters, which could make it extremely difficult. “You just kind of keep

e making ... on swimming; you’ve got to,” she said. Carl said Grace was human and she did get tired at times, but she knew what it took to succeed. “She’s on the right pathway to achieve what she wants to do.” Carl said the extra travel Grace had to do added a different dimension to her; while others got out of the pool and helped themselves to breakfast before heading to school, she had to quickly scoff something down and hit the road to Methven. Her schedule might make it hard to find time to eat, but like any top athlete, Grace needs to eat properly to keep her body in tip-top shape, Carl said. The early mornings and the spending every day after school at the pool weren’t for everyone and Carl said your average teenager would probably struggle. But being a good swimmer came with advantages in other aspects of life. Carl said many top swimmers were also academic and that was because the hard work, dedication and commitment it took to become a top swimmer, rubbed off on young people when it came to their schooling.
A
top athlete has to be organised, and that does pay off when it comes to their school-life, according to one of Grace’s
teachers. Grace’s Mount Hutt College physics and chemistry teacher Bevan Clark said Grace had an aptitude for science, but her results came down to a combination of talent and sheer hard work. “Anyone like Grace, who is an athlete as well, they need to be organised in their personal life and that mind-set flows through to school work,” he said. “She’s one of those kids who can listen to an idea and doesn’t need it explained again. “But she works really hard; it’s just like with the swimming, you don’t get good at something by only doing it every now and then.” Swimming might be her passion, but Grace also knows the importance of education. She’s the youngest of four children, all of whom have been swimmers, and her older sister Alice is in America on a swimming scholarship. And that could be an option for Grace too, although she’s still got another year at Mount Hutt College to decide what her future holds. That future could hold just about anything because on top of her athletic ability, she’s academic. She loves science and maths, and she’s good at them, but where they’ll take her in the future, she doesn’t know. Continued over page

Grace Sommerville spends a lot of her time pool side as she trains eight times a week.
Her science and maths teachers would love to see her take both further. Maths teacher Kate Wood said Grace was the type of student who enjoyed putting theory into real life context. “I teach top stream maths and her and the other two or three around her just love those ‘ah-ha’ moments,” she said. She said Grace’s family played a big role in her success. “They have an ‘if you’re going to do it, you do it as well as you can’ attitude,” Mrs Wood said. And Grace is doing it pretty well. Earlier this year, her love and talent for science took her abroad. She travelled to Indonesia for the APEC Future Scientist Conference, an annual event focused on fostering gifted students in science to enhance human capacity. Grace went representing Otago University’s Portobello research programme – for which she was first selected to be a part of when she was in year 10. She earned her spot there as part of a team which undertook a research project on the physical properties of the inner Otago Harbour and the Leith River estuary. The trip wasn’t easy; they were up at 5am every day and didn’t get to bed until midnight – but as a swimmer that kind of schedule was no problem. “It was really cool, I got to meet lots of cool people,” she said. And now she’s back at school studying towards NCEA level two. Last year she completed NCEA Level One and achieved excellence, with 101 excellence credits. That was the top result in the school; you only need 50 credits to get excellence. But Grace is modest, only mentioning the fact her result was the school’s best when pushed.

A COUPLE OF DAYS IN THE LIFE OF GRACE 8.10am: piano lesson 8.40am: head to school 3.10pm: school day finishes 5pm–7pm: swimming training
Grace’s family has an ‘if you’re going to do it, you do it as well as you can’ attitude
t might sound like her life is all swimming and school, but it’s not. Grace says she has a good groups of friends who she enjoys spending time with too. And recently she got to enjoy what is the highlight of the school calendar for many of her peers – the Mt Hutt College senior ball. She found the perfect dress – a dark purple one shoulder number – had her hair and make-up done and danced the night away with her friends. And she has to make the most of these opportunities because there’s little time for rest in the life of a top swimmer; their only real break being three-weeks off at the end of autumn. It’s a year round sport which requires a massive commitment. “Basically you’re training all the time, the biggest meets are the end of summer and autumn,” Grace said. With at least one swim meet a month, that’s pretty much summer taken care of. Life has got a little bit easier for Grace though. Her family recently moved from their Alford Forest farm, to Methven. It means school is now just down the road for Mt Hutt College student Grace. But she still has plenty of travelling to do. Her swimming training takes place at the Ashburton Community Pool – half an hour’s drive away. So it’s not surprising that she got her learner driver’s license the moment she turned 15 and then her restricted license just nine days before the driving age went up. For her, being able to drive has been vital; it has meant independence and no longer having to rely on her parents to taxi her. For the Sommerville children, a trip to swimming training had been a 70km round trip. But dad Baden Sommerville said Grace and her siblings did what they did for the love of it. As parents he and wife Jude had done everything they could to help, but hadn’t pushed their kids. “It’s their self motivation, they have got to want to do it,” he said. “We’re not parents who are sitting there pushing their kids along; if the kids weren’t interested in doing it, they wouldn’t be doing it.” He and Jude always wanted their kids to learn to swim - in a country like New Zealand having that skill was important – but as it turned out they were pretty good at it. And hopefully that talent Grace discovered will one day result in her coming home proudly wearing an Olympic gold around her neck.
NEXT DAY 5.25am: out of bed 6am–8am: swimming training 8.15am: drive back to Methven for school 9am: school day starts 3.10pm: school day finishes 4.15pm: dry land training in Ashburton 5.30pm-7pm: swimming training (in pool) After 7pm: drive the 30 minutes home for tea Day finished!

A friendly helping hand for the
district’s visitors By Sam Morton Helping hand: Ashburton retiree Daphne Allison has always been willing to help. She has worked at the Ashburton i-SITE for about 15 years, and says she just does it, because she likes to help.
D
aphne Allison is a quiet helper who rarely grumbles. She has lived in Ashburton all her life and gives up personal time to help others – in particular, visitors. Daphne, who is retired, volunteers at the Ashburton i-SITE centre once a week and although it may not seem outstanding, the Ashburton retiree has spent every Monday behind the desk for the past 15 years – guiding and pointing visitors in the right direction. Her work hasn’t gone unnoticed by her colleague and friend Yvonne Lister, who has worked alongside Daphne at the i-SITE for 12 years. “She’s very conscientious with what she does and really does help people out a lot,” Mrs Lister said. “Daphne gets on with the job and never has any concerns. Her vast knowledge of the area is great too and she is just an allround star volunteer for the centre.” But to Daphne it’s no big deal and she does it happily, pointing out helping is a big passion of hers, alongside gardening and family. “It’s really important to give them (visitors) a positive experience, most of the time we are their first contact with New Zealand and the district, so a good impression is important,” Daphne said. “It’s all free information and the choices are so vast, so it puts them in good stead for the rest of their visit. People really appreciate us being there to help them out ... and for me, it’s very rewarding.” However, Daphne is certainly no stranger to recognition. She and her husband Jim have regularly been in the spotlight over the years for their efforts in local garden competitions, often taking out top honours throughout Mid Canterbury. Touring her gardens at home, her passion and experience becomes obvious and

loyally extends to the MSA Garden Section, where she has been president for more than a decade. She has organised multiple bus trips and garden tours during her time and is looking forward to helping some of the younger brigade step up as she patiently eyes a stepback. “I know a lot of them won’t want me to step aside, but I think the time has come for me to drop back into an advisory role and help some new blood through,” she said. Daphne remains modest about her achievements, despite having built an impressive reputation as a keen and very able volunteer among several organisations. However, gardening has always been a major part of her life, she said. “I can’t ever remember not gardening.

Our (Jim and my) parents were great lovers of the garden ... they always did so much. “I grew up following dad around the garden and we always got involved in our vegetable gardens at school as well, back then, so it’s always been there.” When Daphne moved to Leeston Street, she quickly began operating a plant nursery, which she maintained and operated successfully for 10 years. “I’m afraid Jim had to be very patient, because I often had new ideas and was usually very busy. When we built our new home, we never had competitions or garden displays in mind, this was going to be our retirement home,” she said. “But our passion took over and we won six or seven titles, unexpectedly. It was a joyful experience and we wouldn’t change it for anything.”

Daphne has also held several key roles among different communities, most notably secretary of the Hakatere Hutholder’s Society, while her husband retained presidency. The pair immersed themselves in the somewhat isolated community for 12 years, before selling their bach, stepping down and ploughing 100 per cent commitment into their retirement. The couple have three daughters, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, which understandably keeps them busy too. “They’re a great delight and it certainly keeps us on our toes,” Daphne said. “We’re both just enjoying a lovely retirement in Ashburton. “I’m not a hero, I just like helping out while I still can.”

T
erry and Candace Kingsbury’s first overseas trip was a big one. They travelled to Thailand for their honeymoon in April; the first time either had been out of New Zealand.
And experiencing such a different culture was amazing and something they’ll never forget. The couple flew to Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, and spent three nights taking in the sights, sounds and smells of the busy city. “There’s just so much going on all the time,” Terry said.
Their days in Bangkok were spent on tours, taking in the floating markets, the huge MBK mall and enjoying a night dinner cruise. And they did it all in temperatures around the 44 to 45°C mark. It was hot, extremely hot, but it was a different kind of heat than they’d ever experienced before. It didn’t get much cooler as they moved
south to Thailand’s coastal tourist mecca of Phuket either, but it was less humid. There they stayed in a resort at the south end of Karon Beach. They had a spectacular outlook from their room and ate breakfast every day looking out over the sea. They took day trips by boat – one to Phi Phi Island, one of the locations for Leonardo

Like most tourists in Thailand they quickly learned how to barter, and found that the options when it came to food were endless. The Thai food was incredible, but wherever you went you could get anything from the traditional Thai meals to pizza, pasta or a good steak. And whatever they ate it was good, but like everything in Thailand, it was cheap.

of paint around? A
big part of DIY is painting, so over the next couple of columns we are going to look at painting interior and – if you are brave – exterior. But first you need to consider what type of paint you should use. Two properties you need to consider are how much wear and tear will the surface get and is a sheen or gloss finish going to suit your decorating scheme. If you are painting an area which will be subjected to hard use and frequent washings, go with the highest gloss you can as these paints are designed for just that. If the “feel” of the room is important, such as a living room or bedroom, choose the lower gloss finishes for a calm soothing feel. On exteriors, choose gloss, gloss, gloss for longevity. Regardless of which gloss level you choose, all the latest paints will give you easy-toapply, long-lasting, durable finishes that will
reduce heat loss or gain, reduce sound transfer and provide years of trouble-free cover. Any paint job starts with a good prep and sealer/primer or undercoat.
Primers/sealers Primers/sealers seal the surface off and are designed to provide a good surface for the finish coats. They are used on bare wood and metal, previously painted surfaces that have been repaired or are in poor condition, or if the existing surface is to be painted with a new colour that is much darker or lighter than the existing one. They are also used to block out stains and on woods that will bleed through a paint coating. They ensure your paint work will last longer as the resins in the finish paints stay on the surface. Undercoats being sealer or primer are designed to hold on and accept a top coat. Many suppliers offer self-priming paints but the product warranty specifies trade-like practice which includes any timber or plasterboard be primed or sealed.
Finish paints There are two main types of paints used today – water-based and oil-based. Waterbased gives a great finish and is a much easier paint to use. It cleans up with water, dries quickly, has less odour, is non-flammable, easy to touch up, remains more flexible and allows moisture to evaporate through the film, reducing blistering, cracking and peeling. Inexpensive water-based paints use softer vinyl resins (binders) and more water in the formulation while the more durable of the water-based paints use 100 per cent acrylic resins and less water. The term enamel is normally associated with paints that have some gloss to the finish. Enamels are formulated with higher con-
high traffic doors and trim.

Today is a time of change in the paint industry. With environmental issues coming to the fore, paint manufacturers are busy formulating new products that cut down on VOCs (volatile organic compounds), which the experts warn may have adverse health effects.
centrations of resin as they are intended to be subjected to more wear and tear.
Levels of gloss The sheen of a paint is the amount of light reflected by the surface of a paint finish. There are four basic sheens – flat, satin or low-sheen, semi-gloss and gloss. Flat paints have non-reflective properties, providing a matte finish. This finish helps hide surface imperfections and is normally used for ceilings and walls in areas not subjected to a lot of wear and tear. Satin paints provide a soft lustre sheen similar to that of an eggshell. A satin finish provides a harder surface finish which is more durable and more stain resistant than a flat finish. This durability makes satin paint a good choice for walls in children’s rooms, hallways, stairways and family rooms. Semi-gloss paints are very durable, easier to clean, and are more stain resistant than satin finish paints. Semi-gloss paints are most often used on heavy wear surfaces or areas that are frequently cleaned such as kitchens and bathrooms. Semi-gloss is also used on wood trim and cabinets. Gloss paint is a harder, more durable, more stain resistant paint finish. It is easier to clean than all the other paint finishes but generally makes surface imperfections more noticeable. Gloss finishes are the best choice for heavy wear areas like kitchens, bathrooms, furniture and cabinets, floors, stairs, handrails,
The advantages of water-based paints are: • low VOCs • easy clean-up with water • quick drying • an elastic, flexible finish resistant to cracking • stable colour over time, without yellowing The advantages of oil-based paints, which require clean-up with mineral turps and tend to have more VOCs, are: • attractive gloss • good “levelling” (brush strokes fill themselves in to create a smooth finish) • hard, durable finish As a result, even though the majority of paint sold today is water-based, oil-based paint remains popular for glossy woodwork, doors, and furniture, as well as demanding surfaces such as floors. There is a definite shift away from oilbased paints in the industry. For instances when an oil-based paint would be preferable, but you desire a water-based product, some companies now have “waterborne enamels”. These paints look and behave much like oil-based options, but deliver improved environmental performance. However, be cautious when switching to a water-based paint if the surface has previously been coated with an oil-based product, as the new paint may not stick. It requires a little extra work but can be successfully done with good preparation and a good undercoat.

Alpines smile in the face of winter
t was hardly gardening weather when the Guardian visited Jenny Senior and her Methven garden recently. It was cold and sleeting, but the alpine plants Mrs Senior specialises in gave some colour to the drab day. Mrs Senior began growing alpine plants when she lived in Wallacetown in Southland in 1975. She was raising three primary-school age children at the time, and it had been the mother of a friend who piqued her interest. “I saw them in her garden and I just fell in love with the little cushion plants,” she said. The cushion plants, or Androsace, are compact like small pillows and have tiny delicate flowers. It was the beginning of a life-long passion, and over the years Mrs Senior has grown hundreds of alpine and rock garden plants. She began sourcing seeds from around the world, ordering them from seed suppliers. Originally the seeds came from plants which grew high above sea level in places such as Nepal, China, the European alps and Japan. Under Mrs Senior’s care the seeds germinated in winter, some need-

ing a cold rain or frost to stimulate growth. Mrs Senior continues to grow alpine plants and has dozens in her garden, but does not import seeds anymore after MAF tightened quarantine rules about five years ago. “Some of my friends still import seed, but they have to go through rigorous quarantine procedures,” she said. Methven’s climate was generally favourable to alpine plants, but rain and wind could be hard on them in winter. In their natural environments they would nestle under snow, hidden away from weather extremes, and then flower in spring after the snow melted. “Most of them are really hardy, they die down to a resting bud and come away in the spring,” she said. Mrs Senior is regularly visited by gardening groups from around the South Island. Not only do alpine and rock garden plants feature in garden beds around her home, but they also abound in many stone-look pots she has made herself, which decorate the entrance and patio. In winter, her garden is enhanced by trees she has chosen for their colourful bark and foliage.

Austrian can’t wait to come back to NZ by Sue Newman
F
riendly people, beautiful countryside and most of all - mince pies – they’re some of the memories Viktoria Kapuscinski will take home to Austria after her time as a student in Ashburton. The 17-year-old from the small mountain town of Lunz am See in Austria’s east, has almost wrapped up her time as a fee-paying student at Ashburton College and as she heads home, she’s already planning to return. Life as a teenager in Austria and life as a teenager in New Zealand could not be more different in almost every way – school, social life, food, scenery and the pace of life – Viktoria said. Her school in Lunz am See has fewer than 300 students and each studies a prescribed course of study. “I’ve really liked it here where you can choose your subjects, we can’t. Here I’ve done photography, music and PE, along with English and biology. We don’t have photography as a subject and I’ve really enjoyed that.” And the differences continue into out-ofschool life. “We party more in Austria. You can buy alcohol and cigarettes when you are 16 and you can go to clubs. People at home can deal with alcohol there because they’re used to it.” New Zealand’s teenage boozing culture had been quite a surprise, she said.
And while food is similar in some ways, there have been some unexpected pleasures, such as mince pies and fish and chips. Neither feature on the Austrian fast food menu. “We eat our main meal at lunch and usually eat just a wee bit in the evening. Here I watch people eat things like popcorn or anything for lunch. And I’ve eaten a lot of mince pies since I’ve been here.” With a host family that has taken her on many weekend trips, Viktoria said she’d fallen under the spell of New Zealand’s scenery. “I love the variety of nature. In Austria there are just mountains, here it’s mountains, the sea, plains, everything all in one place.” In Lunz am See, snow lies on the ground for around five months of the year. When the college closed for one day because there were a few centimetres of snow on the ground, Viktoria said she was amazed. She found it easy to settle into a new home in a new country and said being with a family that bred clydesdale horses helped her very quickly feel at home. Many of her trips around New Zealand were to A&P shows and equestrian events and for a young woman who rides for recreation, that was pretty exciting, she said. “Everyone’s been so friendly and outgoing here. People here are not so busy. In Austria people seem busy all the time with work and with school.”
If there are any regrets about her time in New Zealand, it’s that she won’t get to experience a winter on Mt Hutt. She’s an avid snowboarder and as she returns home to summer, Viktoria will miss a year on the slopes. With just two weeks left of her stay, she’s keeping her fingers crossed she will be able to fit in one trip up the mountain before she leaves. Viktoria did, however, manage to fit in this week’s college ball. She shopped online and ordered her strapless dress from Australia. And the ball sees another difference between the life of a student in New Zealand and a student in Austria. “At home, it’s just not such a big deal to
go to a ball as it is here. Girls here have been planning their dresses for ages, we just got on line and ordered something.” That dress will be going home with her and will be stored away for her Lunz am See school ball at the end of her final school year. She heads back home to summer holidays and will start that final year in September, sitting her A level exams in spring next year. With those ticked off, Viktoria’s plans to go immediately to university have been scrapped. She intends to come back to New Zealand and work for a year before returning to study. She admits she hasn’t really missed home, but says when she’s back in Austria she will miss the friends she’s made in New Zealand.
Laservision testimonial “I wore contact lenses for 40 years before I went to Laservision. I saw an ad one day, phoned them up and got an appointment the following week. The procedure was quick and comfortable and I could tell the º¿Ů»È»Ä¹» ¿Ãûº¿·Ê»ÂÏ ·¼Ê»ÈͷȺÉƔ felt it really was like a miracle! I would absolutely recommend Laservision to all of my friends and family.” Rosalie Fleming, Ashburton

Jetski perfect for all weather by Jonathan Leask
S
teve Matson said his jetski was perfect for all weather, so we sent him down to Lake Hood on a miserably cold day with a howling southerly making rough conditions. It turns out he was right. The choppy conditions produced a lot of spray as he scooted across the surface, ripping it around for the camera but the Kawasaki Ultra 300X kept him pretty dry, save the wet gumboots from getting in and out. “It has a specially designed hull that limits the splash back so you stay relatively dry,” Steve said. “I have a young family but we still try to get it out most weekends. The sun helps but it keeps you pretty dry.” The Kawasaki Ultra 300X is a top-of-the-line watercraft, perfect for tearing it up or cruising around but it is also fun for the family. “There is the potential to rip it up but it is an awesome family type jetski as well. “It easily sits three and is virtually impossible to tip or fall off unless you’re playing silly buggers.” At 1.78 metres in length it sits well on the water and has the smart steering technology. The supercharged 1500cc four-stroke engine makes it powerful and producing 300 horsepower it is capable of skimming across the water at up to 70m/h (113km/h). “It has pretty good pick-up but is a really smooth ride at the same time.” That would be down to the fact it comes with cruise control, power steering and all the mod-cons, a far cry from Steve’s first jetski. “This is my fifth jetski I’ve owned. “I started with a pole ski in the late 1980s/ early 90s. They were the original type jetskis where you had to stand up rather than having a seat.” A fun fact is that the name jetski is in fact

a registered trademark of Kawasaki. Other watercraft of a similar design are often mistakenly called the same thing. But either way leisure watercraft have come a long way. Despite being a water speedster, it is packed full of safety features. “It comes with two sets of keys. One is for
regular use, the full power key, and the other offers restricted use and limits the power output.” It is safe for the family to use but it is also suited to being used by one. “As well as being capable of seating three it has reasonable storage for a jetski and also has a large 78-litre fuel tank so you can cruise
for most of the day as it has an economy mode.” However, with its great power also comes the added bonus of being like a boat. “It can easily hitch on the toys behind it like the biscuit.” Steve’s jetski is fun, fast and for the whole family, no matter the weather.
