ou are all very welcome to the 2019 Gold Medal Awards, held in association with Hotel & Catering Review magazine.
For the past 30 years, the Gold Medal Awards have been recognising the outstanding achievements of the hotel and catering sector across the country. Despite the economic uncertainty we find ourselves in, the first half of the year has been a positive one for Irish tourism, with overseas visitors up 3.7%. More hotels are planned for 2019 and beyond and more businesses have plans in place to increase staff numbers before the end of the year. This is reflected in the high number of entries we received this year. Judges for this year’s Gold Medal Awards received over 450 entries in total to consider, from 150 hotels, guest houses, country houses, restaurants, cafés, bars and catering companies from across the country. An important factor in the Gold Medal Awards is the credibility and impartial nature of the judging process. Every property that undergoes this process is subject to benchmarking against a strict set of criteria and a blind site inspection conducted by the judging panel. This panel comprises respected industry experts from across the hospitality, culinary and catering sectors. “We are lucky as judges to see the best which the Irish Hotel and Catering industry has to offer and experienced some wonderful examples of guest service. In a time where we are experiencing tight labor market conditions, we met some fantastic staff who were true assets to their employers and the reason why guests return to a business. While product offerings have been enhanced, it is the people that make the true difference to the Irish Hotel and Catering product and the industry needs to ensure that these ambassadors are retained to enhance the industry going forward. A ban on gambling advertisements being broadcast during GAA matches has been called for by the leading union for GAA players. Ahead of today’s All-Ireland football final between Dublin and Kerry at Croke Park, Paul Flynn, chief executive of the Gaelic Players Association, told The Sunday Business Post that gambling adverts during half time should be “removed to protect the most vulnerable”. The level of gambling promotion during live sports is under increasing scrutiny, due to concerns over the level of addiction and youth betting, driven mainly online.
The price of some of Denis O’Brien’s Digicel’s riskiest bonds slumped to a record low last week as fresh fears grew about the mobile phone company’s debt levels. The price of bonds issued by Digicel at the beginning of this year to investors as part of a plan to ease its borrowing concerns fell below 10 cents on the dollar last week. The bonds were issued at 45 cents in January as part of a complex debt swap aimed at giving the company breathing space to implement a turnaround plan. A number of bonds, including those due to be repaid in 2021 and 2023, also dropped. The latest price fall came amid another set of Digicel financial results that showed its revenue and earnings con-
tinue to slip, albeit mostly due to currency fluctuations. The company, which operates mobile phone and broadband services in 30 countries across the Caribbean and South Pacific, has been weighed down with debts of $7 billion, incurred as it rolled out its network. The company sought to assure its bondholders on a conference call last week that it is looking to grow its revenues and that it is comfortable with its liquidity and leverage. However, Digicel executives declined to respond to questions on the call about plans to address its debt levels, insisting that the briefing was about the quarterly results. O’Brien was on the call with investors. According to the most recent quarterly results for
Digicel, which cover the three months to the end of June, revenues fell 1 per cent to $539 million while earnings before interest and depreciation slid 2 per cent to $243 million. The company had $214 million in cash at the end of the quarter. On the call with bondholders, Digicel chiefs said its leverage had peaked during the quarter at more than seven times earnings and was expected to reduce as the business returned to growth this year. Digicel earlier this year restructured part of its borrowings by securing approval to push out the timeline to repay some debt by two years by issuing new bonds. Those bonds have fallen heavily as the turnaround strategy, which involves getting customers
