Linsanity remains strong

at Asian American Night in Orlando More than 200 Asian Americans in Florida came together at Amway Center to support Jeremy Lin during the Orlando Magic vs New York Knicks game on April 5 even Jeremy Lin was not able to make it to Orlando due to the knee surgery. Without his presence, fans were still eager to show their enthusiasm by making big posters, get well soon cards and of course wearing Linsanity T-shirts.

Despite the fact that criticism of Jeremy Lin phenomenon is all over media in America (not sure why), I do not foresee it can cool down all the fans in America, not even counting the fans from all over the world. After all, America should be free enough to allow an Asian American idol in the world of NBA. Get well soon, Jeremy.  By Asia Trend

An Evening to Remember Having the opportunity to judge the annual UCF Asian Student Association pageant is a wonderful treat for me. I feel as if I get a chance to develop a better understanding of the lives experienced by the younger generation of Asian Americans. All the students in the competition share the common experience of trying to blend the cultural heritage of their ancestors with the cultural of modern America. The difficulty of this experience is sometimes hard to understand for those of us who were born in Asia and came to the U.S. as adults. We grew up in a place where everyone was just like us. The younger generation has to adapt to one way of living and acting while at school or in public and a completely different way of life when at home. It is like traveling internationally every day for them. As adults, many of us can dictate or orchestrate our interactions and exposure to American culture. These young students in Asian Student Association had entered a new world while maintaining the timehonored traditions and cultural of their heritage.

 By Puxiao Cen By C.K. Lau

The ASA pageant gives them a platform to express themselves through several phases of competition that include essays, traditional attires, and talent performances. The essay portion of the competition was very interesting to me because it showed that even though their ancestors came from different parts of Asia, the students shared the same struggle trying to simultaneously be 100% Asian and 100% American, while other times feeling as though they belong to both worlds equally. I was honored to have the privilege of reading their extraordinary essays. And I believe that they each make their parents proud. The traditional attire and formal wear portions of the pageant gave the students a chance to show their poise and intelligence in Q & A. The traditional garb worn by the contestants was colorful and beautifully presented. The young ladies looked elegantand graceful as they glided around the stage, and the young men were confident, handsome, and very suave as they strutted on

the stage during their formal wear competition. The highlight of the pageant was the talent round of the competition. Each of the contestants had the chance to display their skill for everyone’s entertainment… and no one let us down. We saw performances ranging from singing and dancing to musical and oratory performances. From Melanie Liu’s dynamic martial arts demonstration to the somber serenity of Aaron Antonio’s poetry, they were all brilliant! The audience was enthusiastic in their support of each of the contestants. They were all so talented that it made the judging decision very difficult. The pageant was very competitive from a judging standpoint, but the contestants were very gracious and supportive of each other throughout the process. Each of the contestants was a wonderful reflection of their family, their heritage, and their ability to blend Asian and American cultural without losing a sense of self. I am extremely proud of all the participants in this year’s pageant. Toa Toa Chinese Restaurant

and Authentic Dim Sum in South Florida On a sunny, early Saturday afternoon in South Florida, a Chinese grandma sits with her children and grandchildren around a round table with a lazy Susan in the center. They are enjoying the delights of “yum cha” (literally drinking tea) with dim sum plates with their family at Toa Toa, a famous and Zagat-rated authentic Chinese restaurant located in a small plaza in Sunrise, Florida, a suburb of Ft. Lauderdale, just a few minutes away from the Sawgrass Mills Mall. South Florida’s Asian-American community is growing every day. The Chinese community in Coral Springs in particular has a strong presence here with local festivals, restaurants, markets, and shops dedicated to Asian cultural palates and needs. I think it may be the good schools and nice, warm weather down there that keep them here. Or it may be the delicious Chinese dim sum at Toa Toa Chinese restaurant. Named after a famous dim sum restaurant in Hong Kong, Toa Toa has been serving these tasty small plates (as well as a full Chinese dinner menu) since 1990, over 22 years ago. Chef To Wong and his wife Alice Wong opened the restaurant over 22 years ago after moving to South Florida, originally from Hong Kong. Chef Wong started working to support his family at the age of 15, in Hong Kong’s dim sum restaurants, working hard every day and night in the kitchens and learning and mastering

the art, the “kung fu”, of creating delicious, high quality dim sum dishes. According to daughter May Wong (also, my fiancee!*), Toa Toa restaurant is able to continue to serve the South Florida community for so many years due to the love of their many loyal customers and the quality and consistency of the food that the kitchen puts out. The weekend lines out the door at Toa Toa are a testament to this. Some of the favorite dim sum plates at Toa Toa include classics such as steamed shrimp ha-gow dumplings, siu mai pork dumplings, and shrimp rice paste noodles with a sweet soy sauce. They also have popular baked sweet custard buns, sesame balls filled with lotus seed paste, and flaky egg tarts for dessert. The dishes are made fresh and from scratch on the premises by Chef Wong and his staff, the same way since they first opened in 1990. Traditionally, the way dim sum is served is by a push cart that has all the dishes inside and pushed around the restaurant. This style of dim sum dining has been going away for a while now. On a recent trip to Hong Kong, I found that the push carts at dim sum restaurants were a rare sight to see. The reason is simple: if you could get your dishes fresh and hot from the kitchen, why would customers choose cold and stale plates from push carts which may or may not have what you want if and when they finally make their way

around to your table? Here at Toa Toa, the dishes are served a-la carte, through a menu system where you write down the number of plates you want next to each item, and the server brings it to the kitchen, and the dishes then come out fresh and hot from the steamers or wok. Unique to Toa Toa is their famous Sate Squid, a dish made popular in south-east Asia, flavorful and full of spices such as tumeric, soy sauce, and more. Customers are known to come from afar just for this one dish. In addition to dim sum, they serve tasty noodle dishes such as Singapore noodles, won ton noodle soup, beef chow fun noodles, soy sauce noodles, hsia mien noodles, and more. If you are ever in South Florida, make sure to drop by Toa Toa Chinese restaurant and have a cup of tea, savoring the wonderful dim sum dishes here . Closed Wednesdays, they are open every other day at 11:00am and serve dim sum all day. *I am a lucky man to be able to eat dim sum all the time when I visit South Florida haha.

The Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation Orlando Chapter

Welcomes New CEO Han Huang The new CEO of the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation Han Huang delivered a passionate speech to more than 50 members and volunteers in Orlando at the Florida College of Integrative Medicine on Mar 16. With a PhD in molecular biology, Han Huang could see bright prospects for a successful future in the research field. Yet, he abandoned that path to take on a position as Special Assistant with the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation. His unexpected career change turned many heads. A simple dream had led Han Huang to pursue the study of biology: he wanted to help the blind see, the deaf hear, and the disabled walk. Following graduation, he, who discovered the first safe and effective polio vaccine, and in the company of numerous Nobel laureates, Huang worked hard to make his dream a reality by heeding the words of Dr. Salk: “Hope lies in dreams, in imagination, and in the courage of those who dare to make dreams into reality.” Though busy with his work at this prestigious research institution, Huang still found time to volunteer with Tzu Chi. As he visited care recipients through his volunteer work, he realized that even if he spent his life helping disabled people to stand up, if their hearts did not stand up, then it would all be for naught. Seeing this, he turned his focus to healing hearts and minds. In 2003, Huang participated in Tzu Chi’s campaign to help survivors of the Southern California wildfires. Although the relief activities were physically draining, he felt emotionally and spiritually fulfilled. For the first time in his life, he felt that he could help people outside of the scientific field. As

he began to seriously consider transitioning from scientific research to full-time NGO work, Huang realized that though there are many people doing good deeds in the world, not enough are working to heal hearts and minds. He realized that working at Tzu Chi was an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and one that he was eager to undertake. Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation is a non-profit, non-governmental, humanitarian organization in Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UNECOSOC). The foundation focuses on four major missions: charity, medicine, education, and humanistic culture. The foundation also engages in international disaster relief, bone marrow donation, community volunteerism, and environmental protection. “Tzu Chi” means “compassion and relief.” If you are interested in knowing more about Buddhist Tzu Chi in Orlando, please contact Bob Lynch at ORLANDO SERVICE CENTER, 5401 Alhambra Dr. #A, Orlando, FL 32808. How Important is Family? – Learning to Let Go Asian American Parenting and Conflicts (Part 3) today. However, I admit I still try to mother my adult children in areas of their lives without their solicitation of advice. It’s hard not to follow Asian traditional practices of being a hovering (helicopter) mom. We all care about our children, but we must direct the cares and concerns to respond in positive ways, positive for our children’s future welfare as an independent adult.

We have been talking about areas where Asian parents and their children conflict. First, we talked about dating. Last month we talked about academic pressures. A third area where Asian parents and children conflict stems from differing values about the age of passage. Westerners/ Americans value freedom and independence. Most Americans expect their children to leave home at 18 for college and never return to live in the home except for short-term visits. Most Asians would love to have their children stay at home as long as possible. This difference of values results in Asian American parents struggling to allow their children to leave the family nest. This can create conflict beginning in the teenage years as Asian children raised in America try to express freedoms that their peers experience. Personally, I remember this struggle growing up in the previous generation. At that time, young single women had a difficult time moving out with parents’ blessings. Even though we were financially independent, it was still not always socially acceptable in Asian circles to permit this level of independence. I grew up with many restrictions that would not be considered as rules of thumb

16

APR 2012

asiatrendmagazine.com

Trying to shield a child from life’s inevitable responsibilities and challenges does not help. It enables, but does not empower. Many children will lash out by breaking curfew or sneaking behind their parents’ backs or doing what is acceptable but with the wrong attitudes. Many teenage and young adult children do things their parents would not desire, not because they really enjoy these activities, but just to express their need for freedom. College is one place where children stray by drinking, using drugs or partying instead of concentrating on studies. This conflict is difficult to address because it may be hidden. However, parents can be proactive by offering open communication to children, discussing limits and explaining reasons for these limits (not just “because I said so”). Many parents should include their children in determining the disciplinary actions when their children need discipline and punishment. What a pleasant surprise to realize that the child usually inflicts more restrictions and punishment than the parents would have considered in the first place. If you as a parent have problems letting go of your children, you and your (pre-teenage or older) children might compile a list of age-appropriate activities and freedoms. Offer them trust and the privilege of earning these freedoms while still in your nest. God has given parents both the responsibility and privilege of raising our children. Pray that He gives us wisdom to do it well.

 By Evelyn Eng

One of the biggest mistakes is to harbor the past. Stop mentioning past mistakes of your children or continue to give them lectures based on your experiences. Some “kids” do need to learn the hard way, and some just need to learn themselves without a parent directing them. Give them the opportunity to choose the best choice. Once they are young adults, it is better to let them make a decision and face the consequences of it, then for Mom or Dad to fix the problem for them or direct them constantly. They won’t be able to wisely analyze unexpected situations to make these decisions by themselves in the future. Bailouts do not come in real life all the time, so parents should not shield their children from consequences of their decisions. Letting them fail based on poor choices while under your roof can be good if it prevents them from making bad choices when you aren’t around to catch them if they fall. Encourage them to be decisive and live with mistakes in life. We must learn to release our children, especially after they are married. Wives (and husbands) of our children should not have to vie with their in-laws for their spouse’s attention. Nor should they have to undo decisions that we make for our children or influence our children to decide based on our opinions. Let’s allow our adult children to live their own lives, make their own mistakes and trust that we’ve taught them well along the way. Parenting is a tough calling. We must give our children both roots and wings. First, set up the foundation with a godly heritage and teach them some of their Asian heritage. Along the way, allow them to soar by preparing them to respond well to life’s unexpected circumstances – give them flying lessons instead of tying them to the dock. Deuteronomy 31:10b “Assemble the people to Me, that I may let them hear My words so they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children.”

Evelyn Eng welcomes your comments at www.christianasianmom.wordpress.com.

Director David Gelb of Jiro Dreams of Sushi. Showing at the Florida Film Festival this April.

FFF2012 Interview:

 By Ricky Ly, TastyChomps.com

David Gelb, Director of Jiro Dreams of Sushi Deep inside a Tokyo subway station is a humble 10-seat, sushi-only restaurant run by 85 year-old Jiro Ono, considered by many to be the world’s greatest sushi chef. His restaurant, Sukiyabashi Jiro, is the first of its kind to be awarded a prestigious 3 star Michelin review, warranting many gourmets from around the world to make a trip to Tokyo just to dine there. The new documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi centers on Jiro’s story and his relationship with his eldest son Yoshikazu, heir to Jiro’s legacy. The film is showing for the first time in Orlando this Sunday April 15th during the Florida Film Festival as part of their Foodie series of films. I had the chance to talk to director David Gelb recently about the film, who happens to be a sushi lover since the time he was 2 years old when his dad took him on business trips to Japan and fed him cucumber rolls in his stroller. He’s been hooked for life since then. David combined his two passions of filmmaking and sushi together to make the film Jiro Dreams of Sushi. What is it about Chef Jiro Ono that makes him so highly regarded among sushi chefs? What makes his sushi so special? Jiro is an uncompromising perfectionist. He has spent decades relentlessly mastering the preparations of every ingredient, and has perfected the balance between them. His sensitivity to flavor is unmatched. He has brought sushi to its fullest potential. While Jiro’s sources his fish from the best dealers in the world and has mastered the preparation to serve them at their ideal moment of deliciousness, it is Jiro’s rice that elevates the sushi to perfection. Jiro’s rice is pressure cooked to serve at the perfect texture, slightly al dente but still fluffy and light. The seasoning is tart with

vinegar but perfectly offsets the oil of the fish. Its served warm, at body temperature. What is your favorite scene in the film? I love the tuna auction. Its a fascinating organized chaos, and really quite musical and beautiful. The auctioneers shouting and ringing bells, and the archaic, analog style of record keeping is almost magical. The tuna auction has been largely unchanged over the last hundred years. It’s amazing. How do you think the foodie culture in the US has changed in recent years? Were there any differences that you noticed between the way food is treated in Japan vs the US? Food culture has been more prominent in Japan in recent history, but the USA is rapidly catching up. Westerners are having more and more hunger for pure, refined cooking with good ingredients and I think that is great. We have a real problem in the USA especially with a corporate takeover of the food industry. Good food and the profit system do not always work together, and I think the Slow Food movement and things like that are a step in the right direction. We should take the time to eat well, and that doesn’t have to be expensive. It just requires a bit of thought and preparation. The Japanese set a good example to follow. Some sushi enthusiasts look down on American rolls with its emphasis on cream cheese and sauces, while others just love it and some people use it like a gateway drug segueing from california rolls into raw sushi. What do you think about the traditional way sushi is made in Japan and the American preoccupation on elaborate maki rolls, do you favor either or? The American rolls are entirely different cui-

sine. Philadelphia, spicy tuna, california rolls etc. are designed to fill up a large appetite at minimal cost. The taste of the ingredients is covered up by sauce, so less expensive materials will suffice. For example, by mixing low grade tuna with spicy sauce and mayonaise, the customer can’t tell that the tuna is bad. On the other end of the spectrum, ordering spicy tuna in a fancy sushi restaurant is a waste of tuna because you can’t even taste it. The great sushi chef Nozawa explains it best in this short video I made a couple years ago. In Japan, sushi is treated with more reverence. It’s about the purity of the ingredients properly balanced, so you can taste the true essence of the fish. Getting high quality fish that tastes good is more expensive, but you eat it less often. Are there any places in the US that you would recommend that resemble Chef Jiro’s ethic and skill? 15 East and Sushi Yasuda in NYC are great. I also love the SugarFish restaurants. These restaurants all dedicate themselves to excellence and are based on true Japanese sushi mastery. Rice is too often overlooked in western sushi restaurants, but these restaurants listed get it right every time. Unfortunately I won’t be there for the festival, but I’d like to express that Jiro’s philosophy applies to everything, not just sushi. No matter what you do, Jiro’s message about persistently trying to elevate your work and to never be satisfied with mediocrity will hopefully inspire you. Also, sushi is all about the rice. It’s the rice that elevates the fish and brings out the flavor. The rice should be at body temperature, and not cold like it so often is. The contrast of the cool fish and the warm, fragrant rice is delightful. I hope that many sushi chefs watch the film and put more care into their rice. Tell your chefs! asiatrendmagazine.com

Urayasu International Friendship Association members visit City of Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer

“Orlando Supports Urayasu” bracelets for Urayasu postearthquake funds

Orlando Urayasu Sister City Relations In 1989, before the worldwide web made the world smaller and more accessible, Urayasu, Chiba, Japan reached out to Orlando, Florida, U.S.A., and asked them to be Sister Cities. The mayor at the time was a proponent in the broadening of Orlando’s cultural relationships, and accepted the request during a ceremony with the mayor of Urayasu at the Orlando City Hall in October, 1989. In doing so, Urayasu and Orlando made tangible the notion that we all are citizens of the world and despite distance, language or culture, we strive to be connected. Orlando’s connection with Urayasu has been harmonious, active and mutually reciprocal, establishing a circle of friendship that has spread throughout both cities. Cultural and educational exchanges such as the Urayasu International Friendship Association (UIFA) who come every February to visit various Orlando public facilities, the Urayasu Youth, a group of middle and high school students who visit every March and experience home stay program with American host families, and the runners exchange program in which Urayasu runners and Orlando runners participate in each of their half marathons, have flourished consistently over the years to enrich their communities. Orlando and Urayasu are also both homes to Disney resorts and share the rapid growth from accommodating the surge of tourism from these venues. Urayasu has been the ideal sister city in their dedication in maintaining an exchange of activities between the cities. When a devastating tornado hit Orlando in 1996, an industrious Urayasu

high school student raised money for the victims. The ongoing Doll Exchange was established (originated by Dr. Sydney Gulick in 1926 as a gesture of peace and friendship between the U.S. and Japan) in 1995 in conjunction with the 5th anniversary of the sister city relationship. Since then, friendship dolls have been exchanged between Urayasu and Orlando, and displayed in schools, inspiring pen pals, email correspondence and student exchanges. There have been Little League Baseball and Senior Softball games in both cities, and children’s basketball camps in Urayasu supported by Orlando Magic’s scouting coach, as well as a student Art Exchange to promote the Sister City relationship through the communities’ youth. These and many other gestures from Urayasu exemplify their commitment to strengthening the Sister City bond with Orlando. Despite economical challenges, Orlando reciprocates Urayasu’s dedication.

 By Takako Johnson

When the devastating earthquake hit Japan last year, Orlando citizens’ thoughts and prayers went out to their sister city’s residents. A fundraiser was organized with support from citizens and local businesses to sell “Orlando Supports Urayasu” awareness bracelets for the proceeds to go to the City of Urayasu to help with repairs to their infrastructure.TheJapan Association of Orlando (JAO), which represents Orlando’s Japanese community, donated to Urayasu City a part of its proceeds from the Japan Festival. JAO members also provide the support in many of the sister city exchanges. When the Japanese Little League team was here on their own, JAO members became their surrogate cheer leaders

for their absent families. I was appointed by Mayor Glenda Hood as a Board Member for Sister Cities of Orlando and also as the Chairperson for the Orlando-Urayasu Sister City Sub-Committee in 1992. With the current Mayor Buddy Dyer’s administration, the Mayor’s International Advisory Committee was formed and I was appointed to serve as a Board Member. I also serve on the Sister City Committee and continue to assist with Urayasu relations and activities. I am proud to have been a part of these committees all these years. Individual friendships have been established between the two countries inspiring interests, careers and insight into how to improve our lives and careers by seeing another perspective. The longevity and vitality of the Urayasu/Orlando Sister City relationship is treasured as exemplary in connecting two cultures by recognizing that as citizens of the world, we can extend and enrich our community.

Harris Rosen Foundation Presents $100,000 toward

Relief Efforts for Victims of 2011 Japan Earthquake and Tsunami

 Sources: www.rosenhotels.com

On Wednesday, March 21, Harris Rosen, President and COO of Rosen Hotels & Resorts and the Harris Rosen Foundation and Honorary Consul General of Japan in Orlando, presented a $100,000 check to the Tohoku region of Japan and Urayasu, Japan to aid in relief efforts from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The announcement was made during a Japan Earthquake Relief check presentation ceremony held at 10 a.m. at the UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer was there to help present the check and spoke about Orlando’s sister city relationship with Urayasu, Japan, which shares Orlando’s roots in tourism as the home to Tokyo Disney Resort. Last spring, Rosen pledged to raise funds to assist with much-needed relief efforts. At that time, Lake Highland Preparatory School students

asked him to match dollar for dollar any monies they might raise. When they came to the table with an astounding $43,240, he honored that pledge to make a total donation of $86,440. Since then, other donations from Rosen Hotels & Resorts associates and other sources have brought that total to $100,000. Mayor Dyer introduced exchange students from Urayasu, who conducted a brief presentation, sharing video and photos along with stories about their personal experiences involving the earthquake, the state of their homeland, relief efforts already in place and the resilient spirit of the Japanese people. The students also presented Rosen with a Japanese doll of friendship as a thank you for his efforts on their country’s behalf. The student presentation was followed by remarks from Rosen, who spoke about the need

for relief in Urayasu and in the Tohuku region, which is one of the closest areas to the earthquake epicenter. “As a young man in the military, I was stationed in Japan and developed an affection and appreciation for the Japanese people and their culture. Because of my time spent there and the relationships I formed, I was honored to take on the role of Honorary Consul General for Orlando and am honored to be able to assist in fundraising and relief efforts. In this role, I hope to help in being a good steward of the money raised by the students at Lake Highland Preparatory School and by Rosen Hotels & Resorts associates and all who have so generously contributed.” Rosen, Mayor Dyer and Jeff Turner, Special Assistant to the President for Leadership Development, Lake Highland Preparatory School, then presented a $100,000 check, which was accepted on behalf of the Japanese sister city by Takako Johnson, a member of the Mayor’s International Advisory Committee. The presentation was followed by refreshments in the lobby. C.K. Lau

A Passion for Music —

an interview with Philip John Mahoney Cabotaje Photography

 By Victor Alzona

Philip John Mahoney is a Filipino-Irish-American, his father is Irish and mother is Filipino. He is 21 yrs old (October, 9, 1990) and currently lives in Orlando, FL. Philip’s been an entertainer since he was taking music lesson at the age of three and performing cultural dances with the Bayanihan at Wedgefield group, a Filipino-American Association. His talents and skills for music expanded as his Passion for Music grew along within him. This is a candid and personal interview with Philip so that you would get an opportunity to learn more about him and his passion for music. Victor: At what age did your passion for music start and can you tell me how your musical talents have grown? Philip: at 3 yrs old, the passion for music was planted into my heart, when my parents signed me up for piano lessons. I had piano lesson from ages 3 – 10 yrs old and I learned mostly classical music. I remember my first performance in front of an audience; when I was 8 yrs old at a piano recital and I played Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven. I remember feeling very happy... it was a totally different feeling and a good way to express emotions and connect with the audience. When I was 11, I was able to play songs by just listening to them, without sheet music. Since that performance, I’ve performed countless of times for larger audiences ranging from cultural events; Bayanihan at Wedgefield, Orlando Philippines Independence Day Celebrations, PhilFest in Tampa,Filipino Pride Day

in Jacksonville, Philippines Art Center at Okeechobee, Asian Cultural Expo at Brevard, Asia Trend Asian Cultural Expo, Timber Creek High School Band & Jazz band to TFC (The Filipino Channel) concert events.

My goal is to release a new CD with a Filipino Record label/producer. I also plan to travel to the Philippines to promote my new CD, so please keep an eye out for it. My Life goal is to become a famous musician and artist… that is my passion for music.

I played the Saxophone for the Timber Creek H.S. Band and the Saxophone and Piano for Jazz Band. My senior year, I was awarded the “Top Performer”.

Victor: Can you tell me the most memorable thing that has ever happened to you while performing for an audience and what you would like the reader to know?

I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to perform for TFC with wonderful Filipino Artists; Gerald Anderson, Kim Chui, Erich Gonzales in 2010 and last year with Jericho Rosales and Sheryn Regis. I personally feel that my musical talents have improved with each new instrument and song.

Philip: The direct feedback from the people in the audience is the most memorable for me. I was singing a Filipino song, “Ikaw” (You) and did a rendition of “The Prayer” on the Piano at a fund raiser benefit at Holy Family Church and after my performance, people came up to me and told me that the songs was so beautiful and moving. With that being said, I want the reader to always remember, I play music straight from my heart.

Victor: How many instruments do you play and what kind of influences plays a role with your music? Philip: I currently play several instruments; Piano, Saxophone, Guitar, Bass Guitar, Violin, Flute, Drums, and I also Sing. The biggest musical influence to my music would be performers such as Kenny G, David Foster, Sam Milby, Gary Valenciano, and Martin Nievera. My choice of song style is popular with Filipinos and I feel a strong connection with my music and heritage. My favorite song to play and sing is by Gary Valenciano, “How Did You Know”. The most important influence to me personally would be my late Father, Paul Edward Mahoney. When I think of him, I get creative and write my own songs which I play and sing on the piano.

Do you have questions for Philip or want to learn more about his music? You can find him on Facebook. www.facebook.com/filammusician and www.facebook.com/PhilipMahoneyOfficialFanpage You can listen to Philip’s music and see some of his performances at www.youtube.com/PhilipMahoneyMusic and www.philipmahoney.com

Victor: Besides your individual performances, do you belong to any bands and what are your plans for your music? Philip: I play the Piano and Saxophone for the band “Blaming Francis” and I’m the Keyboardist for the band “Half & Half”.  By Asia Trend Celebrates its 13th anniversary of teaching Chinese Martial Arts in North Orlando

On March 3rd, Wah Lum North Orlando celebrated its 13th anniversary of teaching traditional Chinese Kung Fu and Tai Chi with members, family, and friends. The school, located on S.R. 434 has been offering instruction in Wah Lum Tam Tui Northern Praying Mantis Kung Fu and Yang-Style Tai Chi Chuan under the direction of Sifu George Kee since 1999. Anniversary festivities included Kung Fu weapons seminars for students, demonstrations by Sifu George, and a delicious traditional Chinese lunch. cial guests included Sifus from Grandmaster Chan’s Wah Lum Temple as well as the Wah Lum Tampa School. Wah Lum Pai 華林派 (Elegant Forest Style) is one of many Chinese Martial Arts that has its origins in the Northern Praying Mantis System (螳螂拳) created by Wong Long (王朗) in the Shaolin Monastery (少林寺) more than 300 years ago. Master Ching Yueng, the fourth generation of the original Praying Mantis system settled down to become the Abbot of the Wah Lum Temple (華林寺) located in the Ping To District of the Shantung Province, China. Lee Kwan Shan, the student of Master Ching Yeung entered into the Wah Lum Monastery and combined the Praying Mantis style

with the Tam Tui (seeking leg 譚腿) style and earned the title of 5th Generation Heir/Lineage Holder. Master Pui Chan is one of the two most recognized students of Lee Kwan Shan and the sixth generation master of Wah Lum. In 1970, Master Chan opened his first school and became one of the leading pioneers in introducing martial arts to the United States. Sifu George, the owner of the Wah Lum North Orlando, received extensive training under Master Pui Chan since 1983.
