- three day non-stop Cultural Celebration The 20th anniversary of PhilFest, one of the country’s largest outdoor Philippine festivals and the trademark three-day fundraising event of the Philippine Cultural Foundation, Inc., in Tampa, Florida, from April 10 to April 12, was a resounding success. It was sponsored by 19 PhilippineAmerican organizations under the Foundation’s
umbrella, headed by PhilFest 2015 chairman, Roger Caculitan, assisted by vice chairmen, Ross Balderama and Emil Cruz and 35 different PhilFest committees. Hundreds of volunteers also donated their time to ensure the success of this premier fundraising event. Sixteen food vendors sold ethnic food representing every major

earned by their organizations for the year for the maintenance and upkeep of the Philippine Cultural Enrichment Complex. The title was won by Mary Yasol, representing PAAT( Pilipino-American Association of Tampa). First Runner-up was Dalisay Allado of Ilocano USA and Second Runner-up was Cora Angeles of the Bicol Association of Southern Florida. Different cultural presentations were featured by the three cultural arms of PCFI (the Philippine Performing Arts Company,

the Philippine Choral Group and the Bamboo Orchestra), together with 24 other performing groups from within Tampa and other cities in Florida. Different singing and dance competitions were also held and all prizes for the winners were donated by generous members of the Tampa Bay community. Cultural exhibits were on display at the Bayanihan Arts and Events Center. Parades and processions featuring beautiful ladies and handsome gentlemen in elegant gowns and Bar-
ong Tagalogs with colorful arkos, street dancing with unique costumes and the yearly Philippine Fashion show were all admired by the onlookers. A former nurse and a former accountant, Cecilia, born in Shanghai, educated in schools in Taiwan, is a longtime resident of the Orlando area. Cecilia started line dancing in 1998 in Michigan, and started teaching classes jointly with her husband in 2000. She has taught classes and been a part of several line dance performing groups in Denmark, Norway, and currently in Central Florida.
“Conversational Mandarin 101 is an intensive program designed to get you speaking Mandarin Chinese quickly. The class focuses on Mandarin speaking and listening and emphasizes pronunciation, fluency, and accuracy. Every Sunday: 3 pm to 5 pm (Donation: $5) Jane has been painting Sumi-e style since the mid ‘80’s. Her personal style is a combination of traditional Chinese and contemporary Western techniques to bring landscapes and floral scenes to life. She practices with a variety of materials, using acrylics and watercolors to achieve the level of detail necessary in her artworks. Jane’s goal is to bridge the gap between traditional (sumi-e style) techniques and twenty-first century contemporary art.

Born During the Vietnam War: An Operation Babylift Adoptee’s Story Vietnam is not the war of my generation. It is, however, a war generations before mine have ensured won’t be forgotten. Growing up I read Tim O’Brien’s book “The Things They Carried” and watched the 1980s drama “China Beach” on TV. In school I studied the Tet Offensive and the Fall of Saigon, however, one event never made it into my history books: Operation Babylift, the U.S. government’s humanitarian effort to evacuate more than 3,000 Vietnamese orphans – many fathered by American servicemen and considered vulnerable – as Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) was about to fall to the Communist North. Greg Maaswinkel was one of those children evacuated in that high profile mission of 1975. He came to the United States from Vietnam at nearly four years old. As is common among international adoptees, Maaswinkel doesn’t know much about his early years. He knows his birth mother is Vietnamese and his estranged father an American GI named Gerald Green. He knows he was living in an orphanage prior to his evacuation but has heard from his biological mother – who he reunited with in his early 20s – several versions regarding what happened. One story is that his birth mother sent him to the orphanage with the intention of it being a temporary stay, however, Maaswinkel says he had been living there for years while his biological siblings stayed with their mother. Another story has his birth mother handing him to a nurse on a plane headed to the U.S. before collapsing on the tarmac in grief – an account he finds to be overdramatic. Then there is what he believes is the real story: his mother knew the North Vietnamese were going to take over the South and that the Americans were about to leave. Realizing that her half-white son would be at risk for retaliation by the North Vietnamese (in addition to the social stigma she faced having a half-American child), she sent him to the orphanage because she could not guarantee his safety. As Operation Babylift unfolded, Maaswinkel’s orphanage was evacuated, leading him to his adoptive family in Collegeville, Penn.

winkel was welcomed by a sea of locals waiting to receive travelers off the plane. As he scanned the crowd, a tiny hand rose above the mass and in it was his FedEx envelope. “I was feeling a whole gamut of emotions,” he recalls. “Upon seeing me, my mother jumped into my arms, wrapping her legs around me.”
Maaswinkel spent the next days getting to know his mother and siblings (a younger sister and brother and an older sister). He realized his birth mother, who he is still in touch with, feels genuine remorse about what happened, however, Maaswinkel struggles with conflicting emotions.
When he first met his adoptive parents at the Philadelphia International Airport, Maaswinkel spoke no English and they spoke no Vietnamese. But he tells me assimilation came easy, and as he grew up he overcompensated for his differences. “I became assimilated to the point that I wanted to disassociate myself from Asia,” he told me during our interview. “I went to a majority white school, and as far as others were concerned, if you were Asian you were Chinese. I resented that so much that I tried to deny my Asian background and went overboard by being sarcastic and condescending to other Asian kids.” Maaswinkel said it wasn’t until his early 20s, when he received a letter from his biological mother, that he began to accept his dual identity. Maaswinkel was adopted through the Pearl S. Buck Foundation which at the time conducted closed adoptions, meaning birth parents had no contact with their children after adoption. When the foundation’s policy changed, Maaswinkel received a letter written to him by his birth mother, dated 18 years earlier. It contained pictures of her and him as a baby. That sparked a communication between the two that resulted in Maaswinkel sending his birth mother a FedEx informing her that he was going to Vietnam to meet her. When he arrived at the Ho Chi Minh City Airport, Maas-
“Sometimes I think my mother gave me up because I wasn’t good enough for her to accept the risk and shame of having me in her life,” he admits. “I can’t help but feel that it was more important to her that she save face than protect me.” Then his logical side kicks in as he recalls the reality of those dangerous times. His mother’s decision may have saved his life. Now a successful attorney and founder of Esquire Legal Group in Orlando, Maaswinkel, who is married with a family of his own, acknowledges his adoption was a good thing. “I have a loving and supportive adoptive family,” he says, “and had I stayed in Vietnam, I probably would have ended up dead or a criminal. Shibuya and Harajuku Shibuya and Harajuku are best-known as shopping areas for funky, youthful clothes and accessories and is distinctly where Tokyo’s youth go to shop and show off, offering travellers a chance to people watch and the wild fashions of Japan’s hipsters. The scramble crossing outside of the Shibuya station is one of the world’s busiest street crossings and was featured in the film Lost in Translation starring Bill Murray and Scarlet Johansson. Nearby is the statue of Hachiko, a famed dog who met his owner every day at the train station, even after his master’s death for 11 years, inspiring the Japanese, and also provides a common meeting place. A relaxing weekend afternoon is best spent in Yoyogi Park, where people from all over Tokyo gather to socialize, practice their hobbies, engage in rockabilly cosplay, exercise, and more. Nearby is Meiji Jingu, or Meiji Shrine, one of the city’s most peaceful forest Shinto shrines, devoted to the spirit of the late Emperor Meiji and his wife. It is a popular place for traditional weddings on the weekend, so be on the lookout for the procession. After the temple visit, check out nearby Harajuku’s Takeshita-Dori (Takeshita Street), where you can find little crepe and waffle shops and trendy, youthful shopping choices. Here, crowds

of teeny-boppers flood the tiny Takeshita street on the weekends, hanging out with their school classmates while looking for the newest and trendiest fashion accessories.
by one of the many sushi-go-round shops where you pay by the plate and Tokyu Hands, a multistoried Japanese craft shop that puts Hobby Lobby to shame.
Afterwards, take a stroll down the elegant, tree-covered Omote-sandō (表参道) shopping street nearby, known as Tokyo’s own Avenue des Champs-Élysées. For touristy Japanese knickknacks, visit the Oriental Bazaar on Omotesando, which stock all Japanese themed souvenirs from t-shirts, art, fans, teacup sets, and even samurai swords. For toy lovers, check out the famous Kiddy Land near by, with five stories of toys including a whole floor for Hello Kitty and Studio Ghibli gifts.
There many major department stores and electronics stores. The department stores, unlike those found here in the US, have huge basement floors devoted to food, featuring literally every type of Japanese cuisine and bakery items that you could ever dream of in a sort of hectic food-crazed crowded haze. It is to me, heaven on earth.
Asakusa Visitors to Asakusa (浅草) can find the essence of Old Tokyo, where an atmosphere of the Tokyo of time past continues on. Asakusa’s main attraction is Sensoji Temple, a very popular Buddhist temple, built in the 7th century. At the temple gates is Nakamise market street, an expansive and colorful shopping street with more than 50 shops and restaurants, providing temple visitors with a variety of traditional, local snacks and tourist souvenirs for centuries. Wander around the neighborhood and explore the various shops with Japanese crafts and traditional sweets before heading over to the temple to burn incense and have your fortunes read.
Shinjuku Shinjuku, located around the Shinjuku station, is another great center for shopping and has some of Tokyo’s earliest skyscrapers including some of the tallest buildings in Tokyo, like the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. Also between the skyscrapers are tiny pedestrian streets with some of the best restaurants, arcades, and shopping that Tokyo has to offer. Definitely stop

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Mayor Teresa Jacobs and Orange County’s Board of County Commissioners (BCC) marked Asian Pacific Heritage Month in May by attending a festive cultural celebration held on the lawn of the County’s Administration Center organized by employees and community partners. The event, now in its third year, was coordinated by the Orange County Asian Committee (OCAC), an employee-based volunteer organization formed in 2012 with the goal of promoting and preserving the heritage and culture of Asian Americans, forming partnerships throughout the community, and building relationships with local and international governments. Mayor Jacobs provided her remarks at the event, joining Orange County District 2 Com-

missioner Bryan Nelson, District 3 Commissioner Pete Clarke, District 4 Commissioner Jennifer Thompson, District 5 Commissioner Ted Edwards and District 6 Commissioner Victoria P. Siplin. “Throughout the history of our nation, and right here in Central Florida, Asian Americans have helped shape our character, bringing vibrant cultural practices to our neighborhoods and communities,” Mayor Jacobs said. “As one of the most culturally inclusive communities in the United States, Orange County is committed to promoting and preserving this heritage.” “Many Cultures, One Voice: Promote Equality and Inclusion,” is the theme for the 2015 Asian Pacific Heritage Month.
“Though we all descend from different backgrounds, it is important to embrace the growing diversity of our society,” said Hefang Lin, Ph.D., president of OCAC and statistician for Orange County Corrections. “Prosperous communities are built upon the principles of understanding and equality among each and every citizen. Through appreciation, open-mindedness and unity, we can strengthen our bonds as a community and continue to share the traditions of our cultures over the coming years.” The Distinguished Asian Award was presented to Capt. Asian Immigrants Becoming US Citizens at High Rate By Elena Shore, New America Media
For the first time in decades, the number of immigrants coming to the United States from China and India outnumbers those coming from Mexico. It’s a historic shift that has caught the attention of service providers across the country working to help immigrants become U.S. citizens. “We’ve seen a huge change in recent immigration,” Jeanne Batalova, senior policy researcher at Migration Policy Institute, told reporters on a national press call Wednesday. The call was hosted by the New Americans Campaign, in collaboration with New America Media and the National Immigration Forum. Of 1.2 million recent immigrants who came to the United States in 2013, China was the leading country of origin, with 147,000 immigrants, followed by India, with 129,000, and Mexico, with 125,000. Asian Americans also have among the highest naturalization rates in the United States: Less than half of all immigrants in the United States (47 percent) are naturalized U.S. citizens, while the percentage for Asian immigrants is significantly higher, at 59 percent. The proportion of naturalized U.S. citizens is highest for Vietnamese (76 percent) and Taiwanese (74 percent), followed by Filipinos (68 percent), Koreans (59 percent), Chinese (51 percent) and Indians (47 percent). These numbers are high despite the fact that some countries, like China, still do not offer dual citizenship. Others, like the Philippines (in 2003) and South Korea (in 2010), have made changes to their dual citizenship requirements.

Yet even for those who do not have access to dual citizenship, the benefits of U.S. citizenship can be very attractive – including security and protection from deportation, the ability to travel freely, the right to vote and run for political office, and the ability to sponsor a wider range of family members for immigration to the United States.
Citizenship also brings economic benefits, said Batalova. Studies show that naturalized citizens earn more than non-citizen counterparts, are less likely to be unemployed and are better represented in high-skilled jobs. Still, many immigrants face barriers that can prevent them from becoming citizens, such as limited English proficiency or limited income, said Jannette Diep, executive director of Boat People SOS-Houston. Boat People SOS is part of the New Americans Campaign, a national coalition of over 100 organizations that helps immigrants overcome these barriers to make citizenship more accessible. For example, the campaign offers free workshops to help people apply for citizenship, provides English language and civics classes, and helps people apply for fee waivers if they can’t afford the $680 application fee.
Citizenship is “a very important step for the Asian American community because it allows them to become more integrated in America,” said Diep. “This integration allows the AAPI community to become more visible in U.S. cities, increasingly getting elected to public office.” According to a report released last year by the UCLA Asian American Studies Center, the number of Asian American public officials has reached historic levels, with more than 4,000 Asian Americans holding public office in 39 states and the federal government. For Zen Santos, who came to Los Angeles from the Philippines in 2008, becoming an American citizen allowed her to have a say in the future of her new country. “I felt that I lacked something – to be involved, and that is to vote,” Santos told reporters on Wednesday. But when Santos lost her job, she found that she couldn’t afford the application fee. That’s when Santos sought help from the Filipino American Service Group, Inc., (FASGI) in Los Angeles, which is part of the New Americans Campaign. The group helped Santos get a fee waiver, and she became a citizen in 2013. “I am American now, and I can vote now,” Santos said. “I have to get involved in deciding for this country where I live now.”

REACH continues reaching out to the community June is the month that not only marks the start of summer break but also the start of a new term for the board of the non-profit organization, REACH of Central Florida. This organization, whose acronym stands for “Recognizing, Experiencing, Asian Cultural Heritage”, was founded in 2010 by three high school students who had a desire to promote Asian cultural heritage in the Central Florida community through service projects and cultural programs and is composed of and led by high school and middle school students. Throughout the last 5 years, this organization has grown to having over 100 members spanning across Central Florida from schools such as Winter Park High School, Cypress Creek High School, Dr. Phillips High School, Freedom High School and University High School. This year, we have expanded to include officers from Lake Nona High School, Timber Creek High School, Olympia High School, and Lake Mary High School. I have had the privilege to have been a member of REACH for the past 5 years and as an officer for the past 3 years. As President of this organization for the last term, I was amazed to see the dedication and open-mindedness of the members on promoting Asian cultural heritage in the community and building diverse relationships with our community partners. Although these members may only be teenagers, they are all doing their part in changing the stereotypes of our culture and creating a society that is culturally accepting. Each year, we partake in events such as a Toy Drive benefiting the Harbor House and other local organizations. We volunteer at cultural festivals such as the AAHC Cultural Festival and the Lunar New Year Festival. We learn and have the opportunity to partake in cultural activities

such as lion dancing, dragon dancing, and dragon boat racing. Not only do the activities that we do benefit the community, but they also help us to personally connect to and learn more about our own heritage. One of my favorite REACH activities is the annual Walgreen’s International Dragon Boat Festival. Each year, our organization has a team that competes in this festival. Not only does it provide a great way to exercise, it also helps foster leadership and teamwork skills as well as provide a fun way to learn more about an ancient Chinese tradition. Dragon boat is a sport that is accessible to people of all ages and genders, because it is not necessarily the team with the strongest paddlers that will win, but the team who has the best teamwork. Having been a part of REACH of Central Florida has been by far one of the best decisions I have made. Before joining, I was rather shy to talk about my Chinese heritage, knowing that people are going to stereotype me because of it. However, five years later, REACH has helped me gain a positive outlook on my cultural heritage, and how I can use it to further my community. As one of the current advisors for the REACH board members this year, I am confident that this organization is in good hands and will further expand not only in numbers but in the work it will do to foster cultural awareness in this community. On behalf of the members of REACH of Central Florida, I would like to thank our head advisors Pauline Ho and Agnes Chau for their dedication to the organization and guidance. I would also like to thank YESS and Asia Trend for encouraging the organization to grow and for being our partners in the mission to promote Asian cultural heritage.

On April 1, 2015, the Central Florida International Trade Office (CFITO) celebrated its first anniversary. The event was hosted by Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and Ann Reinert from JP Morgan Chase who were the original funding sponsors of the office.
What are the thoughts on the upcoming Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement and what will the effect be for Central Florida?

The CFITO’s goal is to accelerate access to existing resources, providing relevant assistance and fostering international trade opportunities throughout the region. That said, we encourage business with Asia the same way we encourage business with all of the regions in the world, by hosting educational events focused on doing business with a country or region. For example, on May 21 we will be hosting a “doing business with Bahrain” seminar at the National Entrepreneur Center.

The Mills 50 Dumpster Art Project Phase II The Mills 50 Dumpster Art Project Phase II is underway. Thirty submissions were received from numerous local artists and eight were selected for this phase of the project. The dumpsters will be transformed into pieces of public art. Once finished, the dumpsters will be located at Say It Loud, Track Shack Events, Jazzercise Orlando Mills 50 Fitness Center, Pig Floyd’s Urban Barbakoa, Chevron (corner of Mills & Marks), Keller Williams at the Parks, BMDM Direct Marketing and AlphaGraphics of Orlando. Funds for this phase were raised from the “Breakfast for Dinner” event held at First Watch – Mills Park in March.

Taiwanese Dance
by National Dong Hwa University May is Asian Heritage Month and in support of it the dance troupe of the College of Indigenous Studies at National Dong Hwa University is touring the United States. This is the tenth year anniversary of the group and it is the first time they have come to the United States. The dancers are all from tribal communities from across Taiwan and represent to the diversity of the Taiwanese people. The troupe visited Tampa and performed at Robert Lee Elementary and Muller Elementary for students on May 13th. The first show was at Lee Elementary in the morning and was attended by over three hundred students. The second show was in the afternoon at Muller

Elementary to a crowd of over two hundred students. The live performance of song and dance dressed in elaborate attires was very impressive and exciting. For their final song the troupe invited the students to get stand up and have some fun dancing a song called Makapahay. This word is in the language of the Ami tribe which means “beautiful” or “handsome”. This song reminds us that we are all beautiful. By singing and dancing together with the troupe, the students were able to create beautiful memories and have a joyful cultural experience. The show also included a short video that featured many pictures from all over Taiwan. It showcased the food, scenery, and people, giving

students a taste of Taiwan. After the performance the troupe split up and visited classrooms where their shared more dancing and traditional arts and crafts of the tribes. They taught the students how to make colorful braided key chains using strings of three different colors. Such braids are commonly found as decorations especially on clothing. They also gave out braided floral headpieces to the students who loved them. After Tampa, the troupe will head to Washington D.C. and other cities to bring their wonderful performances to new audiences and spread more Taiwan love. By Anne Hwang ASIA TREND

AVG Flying Tigers 74th Annual Reunion
Frank Losonsky (1 out of 4 that is still alive from AVG – American Volunteer Group – Flying Tigers) and Jacqueline Collier, Megan Cabana, Anna Chang, and Sydney Cabana
May 15th and 16th were special nights for attendees of the 74th annual reunion honoring WWII heroes, the American Volunteer Group (AVG) Flying Tigers. The Flying Tigers Association (FTA) held their annual reunion in Tampa.

The association was formed right after the end of of WWII to support AVG members and their families, as well as keep the legacy of the Flying Tigers alive. The Flying Tigers are a group of volunteers that served in the Chinese Air force during the WWII era and were a great help to the Chinese military in its fight against invading Japanese forces. The soldiers were stationed in Kunming, Yunnan province between December 1941 and September 1945. Over the course of four years the Flying Tigers shot down 2,600 Japanese military planes, destroyed 44 warships and killed 66,700 Japanese soldiers.
On the 15th, the Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce held a welcome banquet attended by 70 members of the FTA and 30 members of the local Chinese community dined together at Hong Kong House. Frank Losonsky and Ed Stiles, two of the four surviving members of the Flying Tigers, attended.

Frank has also written a book about his experiences during the war titled Flying Tiger - A Crew Chief’s Story. He flew the famous Camel Peak Aviation Route across the Himalayas, the so called “death route,” delivering urgently needed military supplies to support China’s War of Resistance. After the war, he returned to China and flew goods between India, Burma and China. The next night the FTA and SACA organized a dinner show. The Tampa Chinese School provided an exciting performance with lion dancing, drumming, and dancing by San Tai Zi (Third Prince). It was a heart warming night. Several heartwarming stories were shared by the AVG families and the Chinese community about the impact of the Flying Tigers.
