40th Black April
By Ricky Ly
for the Vietnamese American community in Orlando have become football players, designed the new Ford Mustang, even famous YouTube stars - the American Dream lives on.
On April 30th, 1975, Saigon, capital of South Vietnam, fell to the North Vietnamese Communist forces, marking the end of the Vietnam War and leading to the creation of Vietnamese communities overseas in America. In the years that followed, millions of Vietnamese sought life of freedom and opportunity outside of communist Vietnam by becoming boat refugees, risking their lives on tiny, un-seaworthy fishing boats, braving not only monsoons, and ocean waves, but also pirates and starvation. Countless lives were lost. Meanwhile, those who fought the war on behalf of the Republic of South Vietnam and were unable to escape, were sent to reeducation camps and forced labor in the jungles for years, even decades. Eventually, through immigration policies and humanitarian relief, many of the Vietnamese refugees settled overseas in places like Australia, France, and especially, the United States. Many arrived with nothing but the clothes on their backs - finding themselves in a foreign land, not knowing the language or customs, but always full of hope. Many found work as factory assembly workers, janitors, seamstresses, anything to get by to make a living, saving away so that one day their children will have the opportunities they never had. The American Dream will live on through them. Each have contributed their own way to America - from doctors and engineers, to lawyers and pharmacists, and nail technicians. Some

The film chronicles the chaotic final days of the Vietnam War as the North Vietnamese Army closed in on Saigon. With the clock ticking and the city under fire, American officers on the ground faced a moral dilemma: follow official policy and evacuate U.S. citizens and their dependents only, or ignore orders and save the men, women, and children they had come to value and love in their years in Vietnam. Featuring a Panel Discussion with American Vietnam War veterans and local Vietnamese American leaders.

Matsusaka Beef is one of Japan’s most famous and popular beefs and is widely acknowledged as the finest beef Japan has to offer. Matsusaka Beef production takes place in central Mie Prefecture, nearly the center of Japan. In Mie Prefecture there are many world famous destinations such as the Suzuka Circuit, which hosts the Formula-1 Japanese Grand Prix, and the home of Ninja Clans from ancient times. The Ise Grand Shrine, one of Japan’s most sacred places, was visited by the United States Ambassador to Japan, Caroline Kennedy, in the spring of 2014. By definition, Matsusaka Beef cattle can only be cultivated from virgin female cows of the Japanese Black Wagyu variety that have spent the majority of their lifespan, up till the time of slaughter, in Matsusaka City and its surrounding area and are registered under the Matsusaka Beef Identification and Management System.
Some Cattle Farmers provide beer to cows to stimulate their appetites and give them thorough massages in order to improve blood circulation and encourage even fat distribution. Many farms raise their cows in individual rooms so they can be finely managed and assure a comfortable, stress-free life for their cows. Even among the already high-quality Matsusaka Cattle, only those born in specific areas, brought as calves to Matsusaka, and fattened for a period of 900 days or more qualify as “Special Grade Matsusaka Cattle.” Only Special Grade Matsusaka Cattle are eligible for the Matsusaka Cattle Prize Show, an Annual Cattle Show which determines the “Queen of Matsusaka Cattle” excellence award.

Discover This Drink: Makgeolli
By Gi Moon
Koreans and its results translated into sales in stores. The campaign spoke to young adults, who seeks uniqueness, identity, and variety in everything they wear, eat, and listen. With demand hike of rice wine increasing, many bars and restaurants followed suit and opened restraints and bars that specializes in makgeolli and Korean pancakes (paejeon) and kimchi in urban areas. All the sudden makgeolli became a thing.
Makgeolli [mak-guh-lee] is traditional Korean rice wine that is gaining its popularity in Korea among Generation X and Millennials (those who are born in 1965-1993). The native drink to Korea, has been around since the 9th century Goryeo Dynasty -- in the reign of King Taejo -- the drink, however, in its modern times has largely fall flat in sells and has been forgotten in Korean drinking culture for quite some time. Makgeolli has lost its selling appeal behind more attractive and fashionable drink choices in beer, soju, whisky, etc. Lately though, makgeolli has been on tip of everyone’s tongue in Korea, and just like it is in fashion, everything that seems old is new again. Makgeolli in Korean literally means coarsely sifted drink. The name derives from how the drink is made during its fermentation processing of four key ingredients: cooked rice, sugar, water, and special yeast called nuruk (누룩). It wasn’t until in early 2000s the big corporations saw profitability of marketing fermented rice wine and started to ensure more efforts by launching marketing campaigns with endorsement from famous Korean actors and idols and went mainstream with their approach to attract general population. The rice wine campaign, for the large part, has been viewed favorably by many

Koreans are falling in love with makgeolli all over again. The native drink to Korea, hasn’t been this popular for quite some time, perhaps not since the days back in Goryeo Dynasty. The sales of Korea’s native drink spiked 110 percent in 2009 and another 400 percent in 2010. Export sales to Japan also grew 227% during that time. However in 2011-12, makgeolli sales have reached saturation point through over exposure and people resorting back to their soju or beer. By end of year 2012-13, makgeolli campaign stagnated completely. That was 2 years ago and with the return of the year of sheep in sign, makgeolli sales is on an upswing again with consumers flocking back to traditional rice wine as big corporations are looking to introduce wild range of differentiated rice wine products, as well as, increasing marketing activities.
in Japanese. For whatever it is worth, the video is a great marketing tool sell makgeolli, not only in Korea but in Japan as well. The video is entertaining enough for people who listen to K-pop but are not familiar with makgeolli to grow curious about the drink enough to try some. The brand of rice wine featured in video is Kooksandang brand Sang Makgeolli. Modern day makgeolli comes in plastic, pocelin shaped bottles. However, when it is served in restaurants or at bars, it is served in either bronze, china, or wooden jar to be scooped into a cup -- to emulate drinking makgeolli in more of a traditional way just as old famers did back in the days in Goryeo times. Modern day moniker ‘Korea’ dervied from 9th century ‘Goryeo’. Korean rice wine shares the same historic and sentimental value of French wine or Japanese Sake. It is something that is truly unique to represent the heritage of the country and has stories and history to back it up. To meet increasing demand from around the world and to cater to different taste, modern day makgeolli comes with added fruit and ginseng flavors and are exported at an premium price to other countries. Today, makogeolli is being exported to countries where Korean drama and K-pop are quite popular. All the bottled makgeollis being sold around the world are made in Korea If you want to try taste of Korean rice wine, make sure to your local Asian mart. If you want AsiaTrend to feature any of specialty food of your choice, please write submit your request to iloveasiatrend@gmail.com.
In February of 2015, underground Korean rapper, Keith Ape, released a music video for his new single called ‘It G Ma’ - feat. JayAllday, Loota, Okasian, and Kohh. Out of five artists starred on the video, Keith Ape, Jay, and Okasian are Koreans. Loota and Kohh are Japanese. The video which is 5:45 long features its lead singer holding a large, green plastic bottle of makgeolli as he is singing his verses. The video is eerie in sense that Korean rapper, Keith Ape, walks around a hotel lobby rapping in his native tongue and walk into another room to hear artists rapping

This 6 minute pitch was “Shark Tank” style followed by an additional 6 minutes of question and answer. After our pitch, we were very confident that we will become one of the finalists for the event, but did not find out the results until a few months later when they announced us as one of the top 9 finalists! Months went by as we waited for the grand gala and alas, we took home the grand prize and placed first in our category!” They took home over $100,000 in promotional awards from Bright House Networks. Sus Hi Eatstation was founded by Robert Ly & Teresa Tran in August 2011. Their goal was to change the way people think about sushi and to create not only an amazing concept with good food,a solid system and operations, but also a fun and quirky environment for “Ninjas” to work in and for customers to dine in. Ninjas are the folks behind the counter crafting up the Sus Hi dishes. Robert and Teresa came up with the idea while in an ice-cream shop one night and after a few months of R&D followed by the business development, Sus Hi Eastation was born. They started very small with just 6 Ninjas and now their business currently employs over 35 Ninjas. They worked tirelessly for an entire year, every single day from the break of dawn until past midnight to keep the business running. Now 3 years later, they have stepped out of the restaurant to work on expansion with their team. Without their team, Ninjas and customers, Sus Hi Eatstation will never be where it is today. “Our most popular item is the rice bowl. Customers completely customize it from beginning to end so each bowl is different and unique in its own way,” said Teresa, co-owner of Sus Hi Eatstation. Robert and Teresa are extremely grateful for the support of such beautiful and positive people in their lives. They are also very thankful for each other and are happy to announce their marriage this year. When you walk into Sus Hi Eatstation, you

instantly become a Ninja. You are greeted as Ninja by Ninjas with fun nicknames. While in line, you’ll hear things like the resounding boom of the gong when your appetizers are ready, Ninjas yelling FIRE when they melt cheese and interesting greetings to draw you into the Ninja culture. “You’ll choose your style of sushi first - roll, bowl, or wrap? After you decide on your style, you’ll move on to choose the protein combination you’d like. Mix and match your favorite protein choice of tuna, spicy tuna, salmon, spicy salmon, krab, chicken tempura, grilled chicken, shrimp tempura, cooked shrimp, or steak. After that you’ll choose from an array of fresh ingredients like avocado, cucumber, cheese, bacon, scallions, jalapeños, mango, strawberries, sweet potato flakes, tempura flakes, masago and much more.. Lastly you’ll top it off with your favorite sauces. We have over 20 different sauces to choose from.” Appetizers include krab rangoons that are made fresh daily as well as their newest item rice fries, found only at Sus Hi Eatstation and currently flying out the door.

Successful College Selection for Juniors
By Robert LeVine
ism or by working on the school newspaper? At many colleges, truly robust extracurricular activities teach students job skills and lifelong lessons. What is true in real estate is also important in picking colleges: location, location, location. The college experience will not be the same in Gainesville as it is in NYC. If we could take Georgetown out of Washington and put it in Wichita, would the education be identical? Whether by subtle influence or mature use of local resources, young people are influenced by their surroundings. The greatest influence on students may be the student body itself. No matter how smart the professors may be, students don’t see their teachers more than a few hours each week. On the other hand, students interact with each other all day long. How the student body is created – the diversity profile – affects college learning significantly. At state universities, the vast majority of students come from the same state. At private colleges, students are more diverse and learn from their differences. Consider also whether the student body is like-minded or intellectually diverse. Although Harvard and MIT are just five minutes apart, their student bodies are worlds apart. MIT is known for math and science, and so their students talk and collaborate about similar things. Harvard students have an unending variety of interests, so they learn from an almost chaotic environment of mental stimulation.
Success next year in college admissions, and success for life, starts with understanding college “fit.” An environment that is right for one student may not be right for another, and the differences between colleges are dramatic. For example, although most students and families would be thrilled to attend MIT or Cornell, both colleges have reputations for high suicide rates. Tragedies, and success, begin when students select colleges. Identifying college fit requires recognition of the four ways in which a university educates: academics, activities, location, and student body.
Also consider how the students are grouped, or not. A college environment where students live in dorms is different than when they live in apartments. On college tours, look for “human spaces.” How, and where, do students interact? Look at the layout and plan of the campus. Sidewalks can often be more revealing than buildings. Finally, be sure to apply to a group of colleges with a blend of selectivity. Students who apply to college with an “all or nothing” strategy often end up with inferior options. Include colleges in your college list with more moderate admissions requirements. Robert LeVine is President of Selective College Consulting and can be reached at 813-391-3760, by e-mail at BobLeVine@SelectiveCC.com, or through www.SelectiveCollegeConsulting.com
When considering academics, most people look at a school’s reputation and its rankings. There are dozens of rankings, and they are unreliable. Moreover, a reputation of quality doesn’t mean that the school teaches in ways that a particular student learns. Does a student learn best by listening in a lecture, by reading alone, by “doing” in a lab or internship, or by interacting in small group discussions? Study the school’s website to detect how its particular group of educators has decided to teach the students. In addition, the vast majority of teenagers are uncertain about their career paths. Consider whether a college requires that students pick their majors immediately, or rather after one or two years. Most students need to learn about their scholastic options before selecting a course of study. Intelligent decisions about majors correlate to on-time graduation, successful job searches, rewarding careers, and happy families. Students spend much more time outside of class than they do inside a classroom. What do they do with their free time? College activities are more than entertainment or building a resume; they are opportunities to learn. For example, will a journalism student learn more by taking a class in journal-

Dragon Dancing at the Rough Riders St. Patrick’s Day Night Parade
By Jacqueline Collier
The SACA Golden Dragon dragon boat team participated in the annual Rough Riders St. Patrick’s Day Night Parade for the second year. The parade was the weekend before St. Patrick’s Day, Saturday March 14th. The parade is one of the most colorful, mostly green though, events of the year. It celebrates the popular Irish Holiday in its full green, sparkling, beer drinking glory. This year, about 20,000 people attended the event.

The streets and balconies of the historic district of Ybor City were filled by revelers as the parade passed through. While a couple floats also had dragons, the Golden Dragon team was not to be beat! This year the Golden Dragon upgraded its performance with a new lively light up red dragon that snaked its way down the streets accompanied by music played by live drums, cymbals, and a gong. The dragon performed wave-like tricks to entice the crowd giving them a chance to almost touch the dragon. At times it circled around the musicians and swoop down almost touching the crowd. Some of the excited crowd even clapped along to the beat of the cymbals! The performers wore sparkly green bowties, beads, green top hats, green shirts and more paraphernalia in spirit of the Irish holiday. The dragon boat team was also one of the only

floats to have a live performance which made it stand out amongst the majority of the floats which showcased Florida’s Gasparilla pride, green and gold pirates and pirate wenches. Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Health and Wealth!
