On behalf of the Dragon Parade Lunar New Year Festival Committee, we would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for your participation in and support of the 4th Annual Dragon Parade Lunar New Festival. This year, we broke our record participation rate with over 8,000 people celebrating with us! We were also honored by the participation of numerous elected officials who welcomed the Year of the Sheep! City Of Orlando Mayor - Buddy Dyer City of Orlando Commissioner - Patty Sheehan Orange County Commissioner - Ted Edwards Orlando Police Chief - John Mina Orange County Clerk of Courts - Tiffany Moore Russell Orange County Property Appraiser - Rick Singh Orange County Tax Collector - Scott Randolph Director General of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Miami - Philip Wang Special Assistant to Mayor Teresa Jacobs - Roberto Carlos Acevedo The presence of our local government officials served to demonstrate that the Asian American community is important to the socioeconomic framework of Central Florida and that they are a valuable part of this constituency. We would love to share with you some of the local media news coverage which showcased this historical event and the richness of the Asian American cultures within our community. Please visit Central Florida Dragon Parade Media (http://www.centralfloridadragonparade.org/media.html) for a complete list of media reports. We also edited a 10-minute recap (http://www.centralfloridadragonparade.org/) of our 48 parade units which brought the audience much joy and laughter. Through the collaborative efforts of our sponsors, vendors, parade participants, performers and volunteers, we were able to demonstrate the theme of this year’s event: “Unity and Harmony, Celebration of Diversity.” We look forward to future events and welcome your continued support. Sincerely, Agnes Chau, Joanne Grant, Pauline Ho, C.K. Lau, Shally Wong Dragon Parade Committee 2015

Dreams will come true if you believe - make a plan and take action

ď Ž By Shally Wong

I admit that the Central Florida Dragon Parade and Lunar New Year Festival is the biggest thing I have ever done so far in my life. This crazy idea came into life four years ago when the Executive Director of Mills 50 Joanne Grant reached out to me through Ricky Ly for ways to promote the Mills 50 District to the local Asian businesses, restaurants, and markets. Photos by: Carla Chu, John Chung, Andrea Eliscu, Marty Fries, Matthew Garcia, Melody Joe, Brandon Ly, Jane Moody, Kikuko Moribe, Izumi Sakurada, Henry Ton, Orlando Fashion Square, and C.K. Lau

Growing up in Hong Kong, the Lunar New Year Parade was the biggest celebration for all of the community, and so I told her organizing a big scale parade is the best method without a doubt. Under the leadership of Joanne Grant, Agnes Chau from YESS, Pauline Ho from REACH, and CK Lau from Asia Trend, this dream for a parade celebrating and uniting the community came true four years ago. I would not dare to dream that this little dream could go so far today, four years later. Believe it or not, I would always say that this is the last year we’re doing this parade, every year. We were all so very exhausted with such limited resources and support. Asia Trend Magazine

even received some negative feedback about being away from the downtown Mills neighborhood. Fortunately, we were not discouraged and once again achieved our goal this year by making a plan and taking an action to bring together the community. I conceived the festival’s theme – “Unity and Harmony, A Celebration of Diversity” from day one for this festival and finally, I believe this theme was achieved this year.

I lost count of how many attendees were in the audience this past Sunday at the festival. The number of people for me is not important. The thing that moved me the most is to see how engaged the younger generation was this year as this festival is for them. Tears came down my eyes when I looked up to see the audience, packing the entire second floor all around the stage area. Thank you for all your support and kind words. After all of this though, I still wonder why no

TV stations bothered to show up to the festival even though we emailed them a month ago, called each of them two weeks ago, and called one day prior. Why don’t the local TV stations care about the festival? Well, who cares about them now. I will let them figure out if they want to show up next year or not. I feel so sorry for those people reply on them to get the latest news. Thank you, Orlando Sentinel for being the only mainstream media out there at the festival and covering it for the community. Dreams will come true if you believe.

On February 22, 2015, Orlando’s Fashion Square Mall hosted the 4th-Annual Central Florida Dragon Parade and Lunar New Year Festival, welcoming in the year of the goat. The festivities started off outside, with the Dragon parade followed by 5 hours of festivities and entertainment inside. The turnout was phenomenal, and a great time was had by all.

Although this is the fourth consecutive year Orlando has celebrated the Lunar New Year Festival, this is the first time the festival has been hosted at the Orlando Fashion Square Mall. The Dragon parade wound through the mall parking lot and neighboring streets, and its participants included city officials, Asian organizations, several dance troupes, martial arts schools, youth groups, beauty queens and much more. REACH of Central Florida (www.reachocf.org) , one of the organizations of this event and is the high-school youth group that I am in, paraded with flags and

many REACH members wowed guests by participating in the Orlando Young Lions’ action packed lion dances. The parade culminated just outside the main entrance between Macy’s and Dillards, where several food trucks and food vendors were stationed, providing a tasty ethnic cuisines. Following the parade, the festivities continued inside the lobby and stage of the mall. Guests were welcomed by Orlando’s mayor, Buddy Dyer, and were subsequently treated to dazzling on-stage performances - ethnic fashion shows, musical and dance performances, and arts and

The Lunar New Year Festival’s admission was free for the thousands of patrons and was made possible by numerous sponsors: Orlando Fashion Square Mall, Florida Hospital, Orlando City Soccer, 1st Oriental Supermarket, 1st Spring Supermarket, OUC, Payas Payas Payas, Walgreens, Bright House Networks, and Asian American Chamber of Commerce.
