Tết Festival celebrates Vietnamese culture Every year the celebration of Tết, also known as Vietnamese New Year, is held at the Central Florida Fairgrounds here in Orlando. This 2-day event consists of food, family, culture, performances and more. Upon first entering the Fairgrounds, you see children laughing and playing outside together, the sun gleaming down upon the vast variety of orchid flowers and other plants that families set up outside to sell, and groups of people walking in and out of a large building. When you step foot inside the main exhibit hall, the first thing that catches your eye is the large stage brightened with colorful lights and decorations. Many different acts are performed on this stage and that can include anything from traditional Vietnamese dances to pageants. As you walk away from the stage, there are multiple families and local business cooking and selling

fresh Vietnamese foods right on the spot. One of my personal favorites is a hot and steaming bowl of bún bò huế along with a freshly squeezed cup of nước mía, pure sugar cane juice. It’s tough trying to decide what to eat when both ends of the exhibit hall are surrounded with different vendors. Be sure to bring extra cash with you and most importantly, an empty stomach! The biggest event of the weekend is wellknown as the Miss Vietnam Florida Pageant, where contestants come forth and showcase their beauty, talent, speech and poise. Every year there is a newly crowned queen. This year’s 2015 Queen is Nhatvy Thi Vo. She excelled in every category, thus gaining her crown and title. “Although my journey as Queen has only begun, I have learned and accomplished so much the past few weeks. I know this is just the begin-

ning and I can’t wait to represent the Vietnamese Community as I travel the rest of my journey as the new Miss Vietnam Florida 2015,” said Vo. From the past to present, the Miss Vietnam FL Pageant is not only known for the competition but also the sisterhood in itself. Girls who enter gain an experience of a lifetime, where they meet new friends and embark on an exciting journey together. They are always eager to help each other, and the bond that forms within the group is a beautiful sight to see. Many look forward to this holiday every year, where we can celebrate our culture together. May this Year of the Goat be a lucky and prosperous one. Ricky Ly, Don Pham, and Tiffany Chan

Therapeutic Yoga Yoga, long touted as the antidote for stress and stiffness, is now a prescription of choice for physicians who see its benefits in areas like lowering blood pressure and helping cancer patients combat the side effects of radiation. To extend this assistance to its patients and the community. Developed and led by nationally certified yoga instructor, Alpa Bhatia. • Yoga for Heart Disease & Hypertension– Gentle yoga postures are used to exercise the muscles, which benefits the heart and blood vessels. This class also focuses on deep-breathing exercises that help lower blood pressure and calm the sympathetic nervous system, responsible for generating stress hormones. • Yoga for Arthritis & Pain Management A series of controlled poses, breathing exercises and

relaxation techniques will be used to control joint tenderness and swelling, with the goal of increasing flexibility and relieving pain. This class also focuses on building core strength, key to supporting the overall body. • Yoga for Diabetes– Yoga postures that focus on stimulating the pancreas, as well as improving blood circulation to organs and the endocrine glands will be the focus of this class. Yoga also has been show to reduce production of the hormone glucagon, known to increase blood sugar levels. Many yoga participants who also practice meditation have reported a decrease in food cravings, especially sweets, after a while. “While yoga does not replace the care necessary for managing chronic medical conditions, it often helps patients restore some of their lost mo-

bility, learn to better control anxiety and stress, and generally feel better” “Some are even able to come off of certain prescription medications. “As a rheumatologist and yoga practitioner, I’ve seen firsthand how therapeutic yoga can improve the overall quality of life.”

Alpa has been enjoying the benefits of Yoga all her life. She is a nationally certified Yoga teacher and has been teaching Yoga over 12 years. Dreams will come true if you believe - make a plan and take action I admit that the Central Florida Dragon Parade and Lunar New Year Festival is the biggest thing I have ever done so far in my life. This crazy idea came into life four years ago when the Executive Director of Mills 50 Joanne Grant reached out to me through Ricky Ly for ways to promote the Mills 50 District to the local Asian businesses, restaurants, and markets. Growing up in Hong Kong, the Lunar New Year Parade was the biggest celebration for all of

the community, and so I told her organizing a big scale parade is the best method without a doubt. Under the leadership of Joanne Grant, Agnes Chau from YESS, Pauline Ho from REACH, and CK Lau from Asia Trend, this dream for a parade celebrating and uniting the community came true four years ago. I would not dare to dream that this little dream could go so far today, four years later. Believe it or not, I would always say that this

is the last year we’re doing this parade, every year. We were all so very exhausted with such limited resources and support. When we decided to move to the new location at Orlando Fashion Square in last August, we even received some negative feedback about being away from the downtown Mills neighborhood. Fortunately, we were not discouraged and once again achieved our goal this year by making a plan and taking an action to bring together

year as this festival is for them.

I conceived the festival’s theme – “Unity and Harmony, A Celebration of Diversity” from day one for this festival and finally, I believe this theme was achieved this year.

Tears came down my eyes when I looked up to see the audience, packing the entire second floor all around the stage area.

I lost count of how many attendees were in the audience this past Sunday at the festival. The number of people for me is not important.

After all of this though, I still wonder why no TV stations bothered to show up to the festival even though we emailed them a month ago, called each of them two weeks ago, and called one day prior. Why don’t the local TV stations

care about the festival? Well, who cares about them now. I will let them figure out if they want to show up next year or not. I feel so sorry for those people reply on them to get the latest news. Thank you, Orlando Sentinel for being the only mainstream media out there at the festival and covering it for the community. Dreams will come true if you believe. Central Florida Dragon Parade welcomes the year of goat On February 22, 2015, Orlando’s Fashion Square Mall hosted the 4th-Annual Central Florida Dragon Parade and Lunar New Year Festival, welcoming in the year of the goat. The festivities started off outside, with the Dragon parade followed by 5 hours of festivities and entertainment inside. The turnout was phenomenal, and a great time was had by all.

Although this is the fourth consecutive year Orlando has celebrated the Lunar New Year Festival, this is the first time the festival has been hosted at the Orlando Fashion Square Mall. The Dragon parade wound through the mall parking lot and neighboring streets, and its participants included city officials, Asian organizations, several dance troupes, martial arts schools, youth

groups, beauty queens and much more. REACH of Central Florida (www.reachocf.org) , one of the organizations of this event and is the high-school youth group that I am in, paraded with flags and many REACH members wowed guests by participating in the Orlando Young Lions’ action packed lion dances. The parade culminated just outside the main entrance between Macy’s and Dillards,

Night of Purple Pride – Orlando City Soccer Club hosts Asian Chamber at City Pub Pitch  By Gail Rayos

Members of the Asian American Chamber of Commerce spent a special Business After Hours in February at “City Pub Pitch” inside the Orlando City Soccer Club’s new headquarters in the Thornton Park district of Downtown Orlando. Brett Lashbrook, Chief Operating Officer for Orlando City SC, shared with AACC the team’s fan experience plans for the Major League Soccer season opener at the Citrus Bowl, updates on the 2016 soccer stadium development as well

as the ticket opportunities launched as part of the club’s inaugural season. Also hosting the Chamber was Orlando City SC staff member Molly Hartman. Lashbrook talked about the tremendous show of Purple Pride around Central Florida, with synergies such as the City Alliance new network of member businesses as well as the partnerships the Lions have forged with many of the region’s major companies.
