There She Is, Miss America!
By Elizabeth Tran
Our talk with the second Asian-American to take the Miss America crown emphasis on having those extra-curricular activities that were important. I think there is a certain stigma surrounding the pageant world unfortunately. But I started competing for scholarship money. My parents were always supportive, not necessarily encouraging. Through this organization, I’ve earned a little over $90,000, and I have $60,000 of that left to put in my graduate degree. So it’s something that any parent can really appreciate in the scholarship aspect especially since student loans and the cost of education is astronomically expensive. AT: How do you advise children with immigrant parents, the proper balance between their traditional values and American culture?
Last year’s Miss America pageant set history in the Asian-American community. The last two standing were Miss California Crystal Lee of Chinese descent and Miss New York Nina Davuluri of Indian descent. Nina Davuluri won the national crown and became the first Indian Miss America. Asia Trend was able to take part in her Joseph Ribkoff Miss America media tour and learn a little more about her.
ND: It is hard, and for me, one of the ways I was able to express myself is through dance. I grew up classically trained in Indian dance called Bharatanatyam and for Miss America I performed a Bollywood dance. I realized that assimilation really has to happen on both sides. Being able to share my talent, my culture, with my peers is something that I love to do. They were always curious and wanted to know what it meant. And I felt my community was very accepting of that. AT: With you saying both cultures have to assimilate, how can we tell people not as
AT: In many AsianAmerican families, the parents expect a lot from their children academically. How did your parents feel when you got involved in pageants? ND: As much as there was a very significant emphasis on academics, there was also an equal

receptive? ND: The reality of the situation is my parents emigrated here thirty years ago to provide a life for my sister and I that they had never had. To chase the American dream that so many immigrant parents and pioneers come to this country for in search. And I am truly a living testament to that, becoming the first Indian Miss America is something that could only happen here. Your parents want what’s best for you, and they want you to be happy, so I think starting a conversation, opening that door of honesty, is one of the best things I could’ve done. AT: How do Miss America sponsors like Joseph Ribkoff support you in your reign? ND: As Miss America, we have a wonderful wardrobe provider, so every appearance I’m in I’m wearing their clothes. What’s so great is since I’m traveling so much, I put them in a suitcase, pull them out, put them on, not have to worry about ironing them, they’re just good to go the whole day clean and pressed. They’re really good from day to night, so with a quick change in accessories you can turn a day business outfit to more of a cocktail look, so that makes my life easy. AT: What do you plan to do after Miss America? ND: I will actually be continuing my speaking engagements and traveling, I’ve been booking through April of 2015, I will be going back to school to get my MBA in the fall of 2015. I have another year to continue all the momentum of this year and do more things that Nina wants to do and focus more on my platform. Filipino Americans Celebrate
By Lita Martija and Val Dagani, Jr.
116th Anniversary of Declaration of Philippine Independence Orlando – Filipino Americans in Central Florida joined their compatriots at home and abroad in celebrating a red letter date in Philippine History -- the 116th anniversary of the declaration of its independence and emancipation from the tyranny of Spanish colonialism. It was on June 12, 1898, 116 years ago, when the country’s almost four centuries of struggle for nationhood culminated with this one significant act, a historic milestone that also marked the ascension of their country as the first constitutional democracy in Asia. The declaration ceremony was solemnly held at the balcony of general Emilio Aguinaldo’s residence in Kawit, Cavite, Philippines. A dramatic feature of the ceremony was the unfurling and

hoisting of a Filipino flag for the first time, and the playing of a Philippine National Anthem. The hoisted flag was made of silk with a white triangle at the left and a sunburst of eight rays at the center. There was an upper stripe of dark blue and a lower stripe of red. The white triangle stands for equality. The blue stripe stands for peace, truth, and justice. The red stripe stands for patriotism and valor. The eight rays inside the triangle represented the first eight provinces that took up arms against Spain. The three stars represented the three major islands of the PhilippinesLuzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The stirring melody of the anthem was
composed by Julian Felipe, a Filipino music teacher, and the lyrics, added one year later, were from a poem written by Jose Palma, a poet soldier. The declaration was signed by ninety-eight delegates, and witnessed by an American Artillery Colonel, L.M. Johnson. The Filipinos, by race and culture, is a harmonious blend of the East and the West. It is the first Republic in Asia. In the words of Filipino historian and author Sonia Zayde, “the Philippines, a melting pot, is on the crossroads of world cultures and races, the meeting place of all aviation, and trade routes in the orient. Thus, it plays an important role in the drama of international events.”

Mandarin – the most spoken language in the world By Asia Trend
The Times recently reported on the rise of Chinese-language instruction in American schools, a push supported by aid from the Chinese government. While language fads come and go, is the
boom in Chinese language education going to last? Mandarin is the most spoken language in the world with 14.4% of world population speaking it, way ahead of Spanish with 6.15%.

The institute specifies that Mandarin competence requires 88 weeks of study, or 2,200 class hours, and says that half that time should be spent in a country where it is spoken. Learning Chinese at a young age and putting yourself in an environment where you can engage active dialogue easily would definitely help.

National Conference of Vietnamese American Attorneys By Kim Nguyen Hosted the 8th Annual Conference in Orlando The National Conference of Vietnamese American Attorneys (“NCVAA”) hosted its 8th Annual Conference at the beautiful Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress in Orlando on June 27-28, 2014. The theme of the conference was Change. Challenge. Opportunity.
Florida attorneys, Daniel Albert, Amy Mai, Don Nguyen, Thao Tran, William Voight, and Mai Vu, served as members of the planning committee. In addition, Orlando attorneys, Greg Maaswinkel and Lan Kennedy-Davis, were speakers at the conference.
Kim Yen Nguyen, Senior Associate at the Orlando office of the law firm of Lowndes, Drosdick, Doster, Kantor & Reed, P.A., and Daniel Huynh, Senior Associate at the Atlanta office of the law firm of Alston & Bird LLP, served as Conference Co-Chairs. “It was an honor for NCVAA to give the Florida attorneys an opportunity to host the conference in Orlando,” says Kim Nguyen.
The conference commenced with a Friday night reception and icebreaker event. “I have attended the conference for the last few years and have made many friends and referral contacts. The icebreaker event gave the attendees an opportunity to reconnect and make new contacts,” says Daniel Huynh.

He encouraged others to take on leadership roles with the NCVAA or with local Vietnamese American Bar Associations so that a lasting legacy for Vietnamese American attorneys can be developed. Tuyet Duong, Senior Advisor for the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (“AAPI Initiative”), provided the keynote presentation on various topics that are affecting Vietnamese Americans and her experiences relating to her role as Senior Advisor for the AAPI Initiative. NCVAA presented the Trailblazer Award to Honorable Judge Tam T. Bui, Circuit Court Judge of the District Court of Snohomish County, Washington. After accepting her award, Judge Bui conducted the swearing-in ceremony for the 20142015 NCVAA Officers and Board of Governors.
“We were delighted to be able to present the Trailblazer Award to Judge Bui. She exemplifies so many qualities that every Vietnamese lawyer should aspire to achieve – intelligence, dedication, compassion, community service, and commitment to the law. It was also a special treat for the incoming slate of officers and governors of the NCVAA to have been sworn in by Judge Bui,” says Catherine Than, 2014-2015 President. The 9th Annual Conference will be held in Boston. The mission of the NCVAA is to promote the education and professional development of Vietnamese Americans in the legal community, to support research and education on legal issues of significance to the Vietnamese American community, and to provide a national network for Vietnamese American attorneys to exchange ideas relating to the legal profession. NCVAA seeks

They awake the world by Dragon Boating!
THE SACA Golden Dragon
— by the Suncoast Association of Chinese Americans
The SACA Golden Dragon dragon boat team was formed by the Suncoast Association of Chinese Americans back in 2009. It was founded with two goals in mind: to be a family friendly activity for association members and to bring Chinese and American communities together. Dragon boat team members come from all backgrounds and walks of life. Although the team was originally created for families and friends, that does not mean that SACA Golden Dragon is not competitive. Quite the opposite in fact! The team participates in races up and down Florida and sometimes traveling as far as Taiwan on the other side of the globe for world races. In the past three years the team has improved and moved up from Division D to Division B at the Tampa Bay International Dragon Boat Race and is seeking to keep improving. The great thing about the team is that it gets involved in much more than just dragon boating. This team makes dragon boating a cultural experience. After the race in Taiwan, team members took a week-long tour of Taiwan and experienced the deliciousness of Taiwanese cuisine. If you cannot travel long distances, the over forty team members are friends and frequently get together outside of practice for local activities and events. For the past two years the team has participated in the St. Petersburg International Folk Fair

ASIA TREND
(SPIFF). This is a great cultural experience with thirty plus countries represented every year. Even off the boat the team is still dragon-ing through performing the traditional Chinese dragon dance. We perform at SPIFF, in February for SACA’s Chinese Lunar New Year show, and at Hard Rock Cafe for the Lunar New Year. This year we even dragon danced at downtown Tampa’s St. Patrick’s Day parade and at the grand opening of AsiaFest. These annual events are fundraisers for the team as well. The team also gets together for the occasional picnic and sometimes goes to the local Thai Temple after Sunday practices for lunch together. The SACA Golden Dragons is looking for new members of any age. It does not matter if you have any experience with paddling or sports. Come out and have fun! The fun, friendly atmosphere is great and soon you will be laughing at paddling jokes with the rest of the team. We are also looking for young energetic kids for our growing youth team. Practices are held four
times a week. Some paddlers go once a week and some go to all four! Morning practices are held Saturday and Sunday at 7:30am at Cruis A Cade boating club on the Hillsborough River. Weekday practices are held Monday at 6:30pm and Wednesday at 7:00pm. These are great for anyone getting off work and looking to work out and socialize. More information about the team, practices, and races can be found at www.sacadragonboat. com. If you are interested in participating in a practice you can contact the SACA Dragon Boat Captain Kitt Noythanongsay at sacagoldendragon@gmail.com or 727-210-5846.

Steamed Savory Egg
with Chicken, Shrimp, and Scallions 蒸水蛋 You’ve had fried eggs, boiled eggs, poached eggs, and scrambled eggs, but there is one more way that the Chinese love to eat eggs, and that is steamed. His dish is perfect for breakfast, and it was a firm favorite with our grandmother who used to enjoy it after her Tai Chi exercises at 5 a.m. This recipe is one our grandmother made for our mother, and our mother used to make for us. The dish is made by mixing water and egg together ad steaming it to create a texture similar to silken tofu. The soft texture and saltiness of the chicken and shrimp make it perfect for eating with steamed boiled rice.
METHOD Beat the eggs in a bowl, add the salt and water, and continue to beat until thoroughly combined. Pour the mixture into two ramekins and divide the chicken, shrimp, and scallion between them. Heat a steamer, put in the ramekins, and cover with a lid. If you
By Helen & Lisa Tse
don’t have steamer, you can always use a wok filled with hot water. Steam the eggs for 10 minutes over medium heat before checking to see if the egg is set. If it is still wobbly in the center, steam for another 5 minutes. Once cooked, remove the ramekins from the streamer and drizzle on the soy sauce. Serve with some steamed rice on the side. Use tamari rather than soy sauce Dairy Free Serves 2 Preparation time 15 minutes Cooking time 15 minutes 2 eggs 1 teaspoon salt ½ cup boiled and cooled water ¾ cup cooked chicken, cut into thin strips 6 raw, peeled large shrimp, cut into thirds 1 scallion, finely sliced 1 tablespoon light by soy sauce
*Lisa’s tips Using cooled boiled water rather than from the faucet makes the egg smoother in consistency. Use ramekins with sides no higher than 3 inches to ensure that the egg is properly cooked through.
