Check presentation to the Gawad Kalinga Foundation

Hope for the Philippines

made donations to the Gawad Kalinga Foundation ď Ž By Chris Chen Hope for the Philippines has exceeded all goals and expectation. The philanthropy all started with the idea from Chris Chen, Mike Cho and Teresa Chan who gathered student organizations and volunteers to form a large collaboration. Today, we have over 100 volunteers including viral videos, donation websites and social media. Several students and businesses came to-

gether one night to discuss ideas of how to execute the philanthropy--logistics, finance, table scheduling, goals, etc. Originally, the goal was to raise $5000. However, we decided to increase our target goal to $10,000 by Christmas. Within two weeks by Thanksgiving, we were able to reach our goal of $10,000. Originally we were going to donate our money to the American Red Cross. However, with the

recommendation by the FASTER Project, we decided to give our donations to the Gawad Kalinga Foundation whose mission is to end poverty by 2024. Since the launch of HFTP United, we have raised over $13,000 and continue to help the efforts of Gawad Kalinga in building homes and communities for the victims of the Philippines.

Central Florida Fil-Ams Initiate Response To “Haiyan” Orlando, Florida -November 8, 2013 – a date that Filipinos will not easily forget. That was when the forceful super typhoon “Haiyan” – one of the strongest tropical storms on record according to world weather experts-- slammed and made six landfalls in Central Philippines. It ripped off roofs of houses with gust of sustained winds of 147 mph, forcing hundreds of thousands to flee from their homes. It knocked out power lines and communications, and triggered landslides that blocked off roads. A 375 mile-band of rain clouds dumped their load to overflowing waterways drowning thousands. The dense clouds and heavy rains made the day almost as dark as night. In its wake, thousands were left with no roofs

over their heads, with no food and water for days, relatives lost or missing, and hundreds of dead bodies strewn in the wayside. Dead count as of this writing tops 5,000 and increasing. With blocked and impassable roads, vital help cannot immediately reach those in desperate need of food and water, the basic staples to survive. While the Philippine Government was mobilizing its military and disaster/relief agencies, including non governmental organizations, and the International Community led by the United States were sending huge amount of relief items, cargo planes, hospital ships, personnel and other resources in response to the unprecedented devastation, the Filipino Americans of Central Florida quickly organized themselves and

planned their own responses. In November 14 emergency meeting spearheaded by the Council For Filipino American Organizations (CFAO) and the Space Coast Filipino American Charitable and Educational Foundation of Brevard County (SFACEF) held at Marks Senior Center, member organizations of CFAO, Neighborhood and Church groups with the participation of media representatives from WFTV Channel 9, and Univision, agreed to conduct fund raising efforts, and to collect non perishable food items and clothing for the victims of the super Typhoon. Attendees of the meeting which included the Presidents and Representatives of CFAO member organizations -- the Bayanihan International Ladies Association, the Knights of Rizal. Uproar of Taiko Drumming in San Francisco

 By Keiko Ishikura

San Francisco Taiko Dojo celebrated their 45th anniversary in 2013. Taiko is a traditional Japanese Drumming which has widely spread amongst United States in the past few decades. Grand Master Seiichi Tanaka, who established San Francisco Taiko Dojo, was the first to bring this cultural art performance to America. Ever since, the number of students exceeded 15,000, and he has been recognized by many countries. Last year, he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun for his promotion of Japanese culture. Over ten various Taiko artists across America and Japan joined to perform at the 45th International Taiko Festival. Guest artists from Japan were Wako Daiko, Hachijo Daiko Hiroo Asanuma, Osuwa Daiko, and Tsuzumi Master Kiyonari Tosha. Performers from United States included Sacramento Taiko Dan, Taiko Master Kenny Endo from Hawaii, Fushu Daiko and Matsuriza

from Florida.

The opening performance was done by Rising Stars, the youth group from San Francisco Taiko Dojo. One after another, different Taiko teams demonstrated their unique drumming styles: Osuwa Daiko, one of the top groups in Japan, presented traditional shrine music; Wako Daiko performed an ancient festival style from Tokyo; and many more with a blend of contemporary drumming style and multicultural perspective. While it was a “Taiko” festival, different musical instruments as well as performances entertained the crowd. Ernie West Coast World Action Team presented a collaboration of martial arts and taiko drumming. Shakuhachi player Marco Lienhard and saxophonist Russel Baba fascinated the audience with their beautiful tune of both modern and traditional composition. Grand Master Seiichi Tanaka’s renowned

piece, “Tsunami” marked the finale of the festival. Members from each Taiko team relayed solos on the “Odaiko,” the big fat drum, and shook the stage. The thunderous drumming and the cheers from the audience and drummers behind the curtains excited the entire Zellerbach Hall. Please visit http://www.sftaiko.com/ for further information regarding San Francisco Taiko Dojo.

Feel Better In Your Own Skin The New Year’s Resolution Everyone Should Make By: Jamie Luu, RD, LDN

M

aking a New Year’s resolution can be your first step to a healthier lifestyle. Whether it is losing weight, stressing less or being more positive, having any type of resolution is beneficial to both your health and your life. Resolutions drive motivation and provide direction, giving you a goal to aim for and a plan to achieve it. They can help you grow by having you test your limits to discover new capabilities you never knew you had. If you have not made a New Year’s resolution by this time, consider resolving to feel better in your own skin. This way, you can do a number of things to improve your physical and mental health and at the same time feel better about your body. To do so, start by following these five tips today to help you achieve just that. 1. Develop Self-Compassion It is said that we are our own worst critic. A lot of times, we tend to be too hard on ourselves and unforgiving with our past mistakes and shortcomings. To develop self-compassion, first remember that you are only human. Accept that you are not perfect. Be kind and understanding towards yourself as you would unto others with their mishaps. Likewise, get rid of negative self-talk and stop comparing yourself to others or the old you. The focus will be on you now and how you will reach your health goals.

3. Get Adequate Sleep Constant lack of sleep can affect your mood, energy and stress levels, which overtime can cause an imbalance in your body’s natural hormones. The hormones that are often affected aid in our ability to manage stress and stave off midnight cravings. Depriving yourself of sleep can sabotage both your health and your waistline. According to sleep research, the human body needs seven and a half hours of quality sleep each night. Avoid adding unnecessary pounds by getting adequate sleep.

pampering yourself is an important part of skin management and anti-aging. Cleanse and moisturize your face and body daily and exfoliate two to three times a week.

2. Focus on Health, Not Weight We pay too much attention to losing weight and become obsessed with every number and decimal on the scale. Try instead, focusing on eating healthy, include a larger variety of foods in your diet like whole grains, fruits and vegetables and exercise for at least 30 minutes a day. When you consistently focus more on health, improvement in your weight will naturally occur.

4. Take Care of Your Skin Fun fact: The skin is the largest organ in your body. The way your skin looks and feels is a direct reflection of your health and hydration status. Taking care of your skin starts on the inside. Drink plenty of water, eight cups daily and eat healthy meals. Think of nutrition as your body’s natural makeup, what you put on the inside will affect how you look on the outside. Additionally,

Make 2014 the year of feeling better in your own skin. Now is a great time to start! Visit hottTofu.com for more health tips.

14

ASIA TREND

5. Wear Clothes That Fit Well Wearing clothes that fit well will simply help you feel better about yourself. Oversize baggy clothing as well as tight-fitting clothes can cause you to think and feel you are bigger than you actually are. You want to choose clothes that conform to your body shape with just the right amount of breathing room.

REACH of Central Florida Passes On the Holiday Spirit As Christmas rapidly approaches, the spirit of giving makes itself known. REACH (Recognizing | Experiencing | Asian | Cultural | Heritage) of Central Florida hosted its annual toy drive. With a plethora of support from schools and companies, we collected over 250 toys this year. REACH distributed these toys to the Harbor House on December 20th while the REACH Ensemble played holiday music in the background. It is undeniably touching to see how the smallest gifts can bring a smile to the little children. In a society that is run on materialism, it is easy to forget to be content with our lives, but seeing these families at the Harbor House, ecstatic over Play-Doh, small cars, and Barbies, causes us to remember an important message: Remember the little things. The Harbor House is a safe haven for survivors (women, men and children) of domestic

ciation of Central Florida, CHEP USA, China Garden Restaurant, RE/MAX 200, Asia Trend Magazine as well as Commerce National Bank & Trust was essential to success of this toy drive, so thank you all for allowing REACH to leave boxes in your venues. REACH thanks you, and the children and their families thank you for bringing the holiday spirit to the Harbor House due to your generosity.

On the behalf of REACH of Central Florida, I would like the thank the students from Winter Park High School’s BETA Club, and the students from University High School’s BETA Club for donating toys to this toy drive. Your support is greatly appreciated! I’d also like to thank all the teachers and sponsors from any Central Florida school for allowing our officers to leave boxes in your school. Neck Pain from Smartphones Acupressure DIY at Home: Whether it’s texting, checking and responding to emails, playing games or reading, many of us rely on our smart devices. As we grow more dependent on our phones and tablets, the more time we spend on these devices, and the prolonged usage of these devices can lead to long term problems with our necks, backs and arms. When we are on these devices, we are generally slouched in a chair or couch with our necks bent forward. Prolonged flexion of the cervical spine can lead to muscle strains and inflammation, causing pain and stiffness of the neck and back or headaches. It can even cause pinching of the spinal nerves leading to nerve related pain syndromes and numbness and tingling of the arms and hands. Try the following tips if you are affected with Smartphone associated neck pain: ¥ Hold your phone, tablet or other devices at eye level. ¥ Take a break every 15 minutes. ¥ Avoid bending your neck forward and lean back using pillow to prop your neck if you will be on your device for any prolonged period of time. ¥ Use a device stand to help prop up your device at an ergonomic angle.

“Linsanity” Documentary Hits Theater in Orlando I first saw the Linsanity documentary in Tampa when the Gasparilla Film Festival, where I work, showed it as part of their Indie Film Series. Jeremy Lin was a familiar name of course, but I realized I knew nothing about his past and journey to the NBA. After watching the documentary, I immediately wished my parents could have been there. They were much bigger fans but unfortunately, the distance from their home to Tampa was too far for them to drive out. I contacted one of the producers of Linsanity, Brian Yang, and inquired if they had planned on screening the documentary anytime in Orlando. He informed me that they had wished to screen in Orlando but were having trouble finding hosts to organize the screening. When he asked me if I was willing to volunteer, I took it as a unique opportunity to spearhead a

fun, personal project that would bring an up-andcoming film to the people of Orlando. Brian took me through the steps with Tugg, the organization that reserved a movie theater and set up an online ticket system for me. The biggest challenge was selling a minimum of 72 tickets before the deadline to establish the screening. My parents offered their help with contacts in Orlando and soon, Brian introduced me to my cohost, Sandra Chen, who had also contacted him on screening Linsanity in Orlando. We hit the ground running. Posters were taped, flyers were distributed, newsletters were sent out but most of all, tickets were sold through word of mouth. Special thanks to Asia Trend who publicized the movie on their Facebook

page. The Linsanity buzz was alive in Orlando and seats were being reserved left and right. Not only did we meet the deadline with enough tickets sold, but sales continued for a sold-out show. All in all, the screening was a success. Audience members laughed, cried, cheered and had a great time. I’m grateful that I had such an amazing opportunity to premiere this movie in Orlando and I can only hope to work on more projects like this in the future. Wey Lin is a senior at the University of South Florida, studying Broadcast News. I hope to one day work as a reporter or anchor for an entertainment news studio.

Let’s the celebrations begin Mic Check: One...Two...Three... We are airing! This past month I was blessed with the opportunity to talk about my Asian cultural heritage on Radio Disney along with my fellow REACH members Frank Lau and Wendy Ng, accompanied by Shally Wong and Susan Hoeh from the Chinese American Association of Central Florida. Sometimes people are reluctant to love Asian culture because they do not understand it. I was given a platform and the power to leave a positive impression on kids and adults about how fascinating Asian culture truly is. My favorite aspect of Asian culture is no doubt celebrating Chinese/Vietnamese New Years. You do not have to be Asian to celebrate! In fact, any-

body can! A little under a month away, the festivities shall begin. I am talking about the best times of the year include going down to Mills Avenue and watching the majestic Dragon Dance. A tradition which did not become popular until the early 1970s. The dragon scares away evil spirits for the new year as well as the firecrackers that go off. You do not want to miss the performances! Do you like red envelopes? What if I said they were filled with money? I thought so. Red envelopes called hongbao or li xi symbolize good luck, good fortune, and success. I enjoy receiving li xi, but family time is the best part. All your family members come over and you have a large feast. It is not so much about the tasty dumplings

as the timeless company you get to have. The silly times. The memories made. For a moment, all your problems cease to exist. That is the true beauty of Chinese/Vietnamese New Years. Tracing back my roots, I am proud to be an Asian-American. If you want to learn more tune in to AM 990 at 6:30am on January 25th (The interview will be aired!). Here is to a new year, the year of the Horse! Duc-Quy Nguyen is an IB senior at Winter Park High School. He plans to major in biomedical engineering in college and impact lives around the world. Outside of school, he enjoys playing viola in FSYO (Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra), volunteering at the VA hospital, and playing ultimate frisbee.

How to Celebrate the Chinese New Year

 Compiled by Asia Trend

“Why is Chinese New Year on a different date every year?” - a typical question people always ask during the Spring Festival. Chinese New Year is ALWAYS on the 1st day of the Lunar calendar. The celebration/preparation for Chinese New Year is long and usually last for almost a month. People shop for the festival – Food, new clothes, new home decor and gifts. It is sort of like Christmas.

Delicacy and New Year Eve Dinner Food plays a very important role in Chinese culture. During the New Year Eve, all Asian markets are packed as people have to prepare for big feasts before and during the new year. Extra staff will be hired for this important holiday. One of the most important events of this festival is the New Year Eve dinner every family has. It is almost like Chinese Thanksgiving. People who are far away from home usually also try their best to return home for this important day. It is a big feast with fish which symbolizes surplus, chicken, a must-have item for all sorts of Chinese celebrations, lettuce, which sounds like “generate wealth” in Cantonese and Tong Yuen, a sweet glutinous rice ball whose roundness symbolizes family unity. Most families do this at home. Recently, it

New Clothes and Shoes It is a custom that people wear brand new clothes during the New Year. Brand new from top to bottom, from outer wear to underwear. It is bad luck to buy new shoes in the first month of the year. Because of the “Shoe” in Cantonese is pronounced as “highn” (lower tone), which sounds like a sigh.

gets more and more common for families to have their New Year Eve Dinner out. Here are some of the recommendations for you to have your New Year Eve dinner or shop for your favorite Chinese food if you want to spend your holiday in the right way:

34

ASIA TREND

Traditionally, people put on Chinese costumes. And traditionally, people tend to choose red, purple, silvery or golden color for their new clothes as these colors symbolize good fortune.

During Chinese New Year, we usually spend time either at home to be visited or doing New-year-visits. On the first day of the year, we are supposed to have vegetarian meal. However, most people usually have only one vegetarian dish, with fish and chicken on this day. After the morning meal, parents, elderly and married people give the younger one Lai Sees (red packet money). Lai Sees are given out during Chinese New Year from married couples to unmarried people, from seniors to juniors and from bosses to their staff. The 7th day of the New Year is called “The People’s Birthday”, the day everyone gets older. The 15th day of the New Year is the Lantern Festival, this day is also the Chinese Valentines. In the past, it was also one of the very few chances that single girls were allowed to leave their houses. In this day, the girls could finally enjoy a bit of freedom to play riddle games, read poems and have a tea party with other gentlemen who might be their future husbands.

Chinese New Year is the time you visit your friend and relatives (usually those who only see during this time of the year). You do not go empty-handed. You bring candies, chocolates or cookies. For more events: www.asiatrend.org/calendar-of-events.html
