Asian Cultural Expo at Disney Downtown

From dragon boat racing to Asian dancing, visitors could see and try it all at the 4th Annual Asian Cultural Expo. The Asian festival and the 2-day Walgreens Orlando International Dragon Boat Races were held at Village Lake and Downtown Disney’s West Side in Lake Buena Vista, Florida during the weekend of October 19th. “Once again we had a great day for the Walgreens Dragon Boat Festival at Downtown Disney. The combination of Sport, Health and Culture was evident everywhere. Dragon Boat is a great sport because it can be done by such a wide range of people. Combined with the Walgreens Health Village and the Asia Trend Cultural exhibition I’d say it was a good day for body and soul. Plus we were able to support MD Anderson Hospital,” said Marlin Hutchens, Market Vice President of Walgreen Company “It’s definitely our honor to be here. It has been our fourth year to showcase our culture in the Asian Cultural EXPO. By adding the different cultural workshops, we would like to create interactions and let the audiences experience the Asian culture. Showing unity and the effort of teamwork is what we want,” said Shally Wong, founder and publisher of Asia Trend Magazine. There was plenty to see and do to experience the culture of Japan, Vietnam, Thailand,

at the Walgreen’s booth. “This is a great event. It gets bigger every year. We’re out here every year to do free blood pressure checks for anybody who wants to come by and get their blood pressure checked,” said Dennis Pustinger, a Walgreen’s Pharmacy manager. Many visitors also watched the international dragon boat teams compete on Village Lake.
Polynesia, Taiwan, China and the Philippines. The City of Orlando Commissioner Patty Sheehan kicked off the event by hosting the eye dotting ceremony. “A lot of the Asian businesses are located at District 4 where I represent and it is such a pleasure to work with the Asian Community with such a rich heritage,” said Sheehan at the grand opening. “This morning we had the Lion Dance, Taiko Drums, Filipino Dance, Polynesian Dance, Martial Arts and Chinese Dance. With the different booths, you can see the Chinese calligraphy and Japanese origami. We have the Chinese herbal school and the SNAP Photo Shop. That’s a lot of fun. We have the Asian products you can shop for. This is face-toface, get to learn the different Asian cultures. People just love it and embrace the Asian culture here,” said Wong. The expo also had free health screenings
“Everybody who does dragon boats here also understands how important the dragon boats are -- coming from China over a thousand years ago. They know about that. That’s great. “We love to be part of it,” said Wong. The Asian Cultural Expo also is a fundraiser for Asia Trend Magazine, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. “We hope to promote Asian cultural arts and welcome more people to experience the diversity. We hope to generate funds which can go back to the performing groups. They need more funding and publicity as the main stream media is not helping a lot. We have a lot more coming up for the next year or two, “ said Wong. The Asian Coalition of Tallahassee (www.asiantlh.org |ACT), a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization, celebrated its ninth annual Asian Festival, Experience Asia Festival 2013 (EAF2013), on Saturday, October 12, 2013 between 10:00 AM and 5:30 PM at Bloxham and Lewis Parks located at the intersection of Park Avenue and Monroe Street. Tallahassee being a college town with an ACC (FSU) and MEAC (FAMU) football teams, EAF2013 was scheduled on a Saturday without a home football game. The event was free and open to public and attracted record crowds of 17,000+ people. Our featured performers came from Orlando (Matsuriza Taiko Drummers), Tampa (Philippines Performing Arts Company) and Pensacola. This year ACT had two media sponsors ABC affiliate WTXL-TV 27 HD and Tallahassee Democrat, and two media partners, WFSU-TV and WFSU-Radio. One of the main objectives of the Asian Coalition is to increase the awareness and appreciation of the diverse Asian culture and heritage among local public through cultural performances, demonstrations, and information booths. Hosting Experience Asia Festival annually allows us to achieve this objec-
tive. In addition to the cultural benefits, the Festival also promotes local merchants by gathering 70 small-business vendors of food, arts, crafts, jewelry, clothing, business services, human services, and others. The Experience Asia is the largest Asian gathering in the Big Bend area and has established itself as “The Asian Festival of the Big Bend”. The early October climate was perfect and entertainment programs and demonstrations went as scheduled throughout the day on two separate stages. Eight WTXL-TV 27 anchors promoted the event by being the emcees. The food, fashion, arts and crafts, and service vendors saw record crowds and did brisk business. Local college and high school student volunteers helped ACT by setting up the booths, answering questions, and taking surveys. Overall it was a successful event. The Tallahassee and Leon County has embraced Asian Coalition in a big way by attending in large numbers despite the fact that there were several other events scheduled on the same day. The Mayor and First Lady of Tallahassee officially opened the Festival at noon. The survey indicated everyone is looking forward the
next year’s Tenth Annual Experience Asia 2014. Live Free of
Diabetes Longer By: Jamie Luu
D
iabetes, now more common than before, is a metabolic disease that affects nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States.1 Once thought to be a disease that resulted from a combination of having bad genes and being obese, it is now known that you can have diabetes even if you are not overweight. In fact, the Joslin Diabetes Center reported that Asian Americans, despite having lower body weight, are more likely than Caucasians to have diabetes due to both genetic and environmental influences.2 Although you cannot control what runs in your family, you do however, have a take on what foods you eat and how your lifestyle can affect your health. With type 2 diabetes on the rise among Asian Americans, it is important to be educated on how you can delay or prevent diabetes from ever occurring.
14
First understand what type 2 diabetes is. Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disease that occurs when blood glucose (blood sugar) levels are consistently high, either because the body has a shortage of insulin or because the body’s cells do not respond well to insulin, or both.3 Insulin is a natural hormone produced by the pancreas. It helps the body’s cells absorb glucose, broken down from the carbs you eat, from the blood stream into the rest of your body to be used energy. When too little insulin is available, glucose accumulates in the ASIA TREND
blood stream - elevating blood glucose levels, which overtime can lead to type 2 diabetes. Living with type 2 diabetes is not easy. It involves constant monitoring of your blood glucose levels, the carbohydrates you eat, and diabetic medications. And not to mention, the
non-stop medical bills. Diabetes, when left unmonitored or uncontrolled can result in serious health complications, such as loss of limb, stroke, blindness, heart and kidney failure. So, what can you do today to delay or prevent the onset of diabetes? Follow these simple instructions to help you live diabetes-free longer.
Drop Some Weight A small amount of weight gain can increase risk for developing diabetes dramatically. If you are overweight, make it a goal to drop five to seven percent of your body weight.
Stay Active Physical activity does the metabolism good and helps regulate insulin and blood sugar. It is recommended to exercise thirty or more minutes, five or more days per week, or 150 minutes or more per week.
Eat Right Eat smaller portions to cut calories and fewer high-fat foods by limiting fatty cuts of meats and fried foods from your diet. Eat more fiber, such as whole grain rice, oatmeal, and a variety of fruits and dark green and orange vegetables. Jamie Luu is a food and nutrition enthusiast with a passion in improving overall health and wellness of Asian Americans. She received her Bachelor’s of Science degree in food science and human nutrition with a concentration in dietetics from the University of Florida. Currently residing in Saint Petersburg, Florida, she aspires to be a registered dietitian, specializing in diabetes and weight management. New Japanese Cultural and Language Group lesson at Rising Sun Dojo in Kissimmee By Izumi Sakurada of Japanese Lesson 34747
Rising Sun Martial Art Dojo has been offering authentic Japanese Karate and Iai (swordsmanship) lessons in Kissimmee, Florida the last 6 years. The mission of the dojo is to teach students not only skills, but also attitude and philosophy behind martial art. Mrs. Rie Campbell is the wife of Mr. Pete Campbell, owner and instructor of Rising Sun Martial Art Dojo. She has been sharing her passion toward traditional Japanese art such as Shodo - brush calligraphy, Kimono, and Sado - tea ceremony at local cultural events as well as at educational workshops of Osceola County schools. She wanted to conduct Japanese cultural and language lesson at their own dojo as well. I, myself have been teaching and demonstrating Japanese language and culture locally in Kissimmee last 6 years. When I was looking for locations to conduct group lesson over this summer, Mr. and Mrs. Campbell offered a collaboration project at Rising Sun Martial Art Dojo. It was match made in heaven! Our mission is to produce culturally and linguistically articulated Japanese experts. We both have seen many people suffering from situation of culturally enthusiastic, yet not articulated. Japanese culture, especially sub-culture like Anime and J-pop music have been promoted virtually over the video sharing websites like YouTube. They provide a great gateway to Japanese culture and language, yet I have seen the downside of “self-learned” education. For example, martial artists definitely mark the top list of J-fans. However, a very small numbers of them, even very
16
ASIA TREND
well trained ones, speak Japanese with articulation. I call the effect, 惜しい Oshii “So Close” syndrome. We agreed on the mission of transforming SCS victims to 本物 Honmono “True Expert” of Japan through our class. In July, we offered the first session. We asked Karate students of the Rising Sun dojo and local martial artists to sign up. We had ten enthusiastic students aging from ten years old to over 40 years old gathered. Since then, we have been conducting lesson every two to three weeks. In a one and half hour lesson, students learn Japanese language skill step by step during the first 40 minutes. Each time, students are accumulating Japanese characters, Hiragana and Katakana using Karuta (picture flash card) game. During 15 minutes break, Students learn how to properly eat and drink Japanese snacks. Then, we focus on cultural experience for the last 45 minutes. So far, students have experienced Shodo, brush calligraphy, and Origami art. We are planning to present not only traditional, but modern subculture as well. Rie sensei ( teacher) comments, “ I am very pleased with positive response from students. We are having fun together at each lesson. I, myself have been discovering new aspect by sharing my knowledge. We want to continue sharing more knowledge about Japan in fun ways. Our door is open to anyone. Please feel free to inquire about the future lesson schedule.” Here are comments from current students.
Pierangeli Arape: the age ten said, “I like this Japanese class because I like to learn a new language.” Eric: “I enjoy the Karuta game. Even though they are for kids. They are fun and help with memorization. I also enjoy the snacks. “ Peranna Pfister: “I am excited to learn Japanese in this group because I grew up reading Manga and watching Anime, so I have always just been a pretty interested learning a new language. Even it is difficult, I enjoy learning new things.” Rachel Sanderson: “ I enjoy taking this Japanese class because it provides the opportunity to learn about the language and culture from people native to Japan.” Glenn Feaster: “I have a love for other languages and cultures. I enjoy learning the structure of language and the reasons behind culture. I may not be fluent in any language I have studied but I take delight in the reaction I receive when I attempt to speak the language of a person from another country or their reaction that I know something about their culture or history. Our classes have encompassed both language and culture. We have had a taste of calligraphy and origami along with learning the basics of writing and speaking Japanese, not to mention trying authentic Japanese foods!” The class is conducted at Rising Sun Dojo at 2220 E. Hwy 192 #10, Kissimmee, FL 34744. We are open to accept new students. Please contact Mrs. Rie Campbell of Rising Sun Dojo at 407847-6065 or Izumi Sakurada of Japanese Lesson 34747 at 321-443-8583 for more details and future schedule.

How to Alleviate Tennis Elbow Acupressure DIY at Home:
Chinese Medicine Tips!
Tennis Elbow, also known as Lateral
Epicondylitis, refers to the painful condition that is located to the lateral upper arm near the elbow caused by overuse or over work of the tendons and muscles. This condition is not exclusive to tennis players, it can occur to anyone at any age from any activities that involves repetitive motions that place stress on the tendon attachments to the elbow. These can come from both athletic, or work related repetitive motions such as twisting, or gripping of the wrist and direct trauma to the elbow.
網球肘按穴療法 Try Massaging the Acupressure Points Below to Help Alleviate Tennis Elbow. ¥ SJ 10 (Tian Jing)天井: This point is
located on the lateral side of the upper arm, in the depression 1cun proximal to the tip of the olecranon when the elbow is flexed.
Symptoms may include: ¥ Gradually worsening Elbow pain ¥ Pain radiating from the lateral (outside) side of the elbow to the forearm, or the back of the hand when engaging in any motion of the elbow, but specifically grasping, twisting, or lifting. ¥ Weak wrist, weak grip, and trouble lifting objects.
¥ LI 11 (Qu Chi)曲池: This point is located
at the lateral end of the transverse cubital crease midway between LU5 (located at the cubital crease on the radial side of the biceps brachii tendon) and the lateral epicondyle of the humerus.
(See pics below)
Treatment options may vary depending on the severity of your specific condition. Generally, most patients will recover successfully with nonsurgical treatment options including rest, NSAiD medicines, elbow brace, activity modifications or changes, physical therapy, and acupuncture. It is important to rest the affected arm and avoid activities that cause pain to prevent from further injury. However, with any type of pain syndrome, even if your pain is mild, it is always important to see your primary care physician to rule out any serious medical conditions and to get an accurate diagnosis to ensure proper treatment.

Best Private Improvement of the Year – Quantum Leap Winery & owners Jill Ramsier & David Forrester.
Each Main Street District selected one winner to represent their District in the three individual award categories. Mills 50 Main Street winners were:
Business/Merchant of the Year – Track Shack & owners Jon & Betsy Hughes.
Volunteer of the Year – Will Walker, owner of Will’s Pub & lil indies. Will has been an integral part of the success of Orlando’s independent music scene since 1995. He is the creative force behind Southern Fried Sundays, a monthly music event, with proceeds benefitting The Mustard Seed and other non-profit organizations. Will supports Mills 50 in many ways – from brainstorming ideas for potential promotions to donating beer for events. He is the one guy that can be counted on to say “how can I help” and “what do you need”? Will recently hosted a puppet show on a Saturday afternoon called “Davey Rocker’s Barnyard Jam”. It was very well received with almost one hundred
Track Shack is the oldest running store in Central Florida. After college, Jon went to work at Track Shack. Within a year, he became a partner and in 1983, Jon and Betsy bought out the other owners. Track Shack hosts 35 – 40 races annually, with anywhere from 1,000 to 14,000 people in a race. Many of these races take place in Mills 50 & surrounding areas, thereby introducing runners to our local businesses. Jon and Betsy are well known for their philanthropic work through their Track Shack Foundation. This foundation has touched the lives of thousands and contributed over $2 million into the greater Central Florida community. An original Mills 50 business member, Track Shack supports the district through event participation and marketing support. Jon and Betsy also are members of the newly formed “buy local” task force.
Jill and David converted a 17,000 square foot warehouse at 1312 Wilfred Drive into a state of the art facility, complete with cork floors, upscale furnishings and original art. The Tasting Room was designed for sophistication, comfort and conversation, validating the concept that great wine and those who love it deserve a great space. Jill and David search for good quality, sustainably grown wine and transport it in large vessels to the winery, where it is stored, finished, blended and packaged. This environmentally conscious practice offer consumers quality wine from a local winery while respecting our environment. Their wines are served in many area bars and restaurants. In addition to being known for its wines, Quantum Leap has gained a reputation as a special event venue, hosting weddings, receptions, conferences and meetings as well as wine-themed events. Mills 50 thanks these and the dozens of other business owners who support the District and continue to make it “the intersection of creativity + culture”!
The 3rd Annual SHOP SMALL (aka SHOP SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY) will take place on Saturday, November 30. Founded by American Express in 2010, its aim is to promote shopping small and supporting small businesses. Please support your Mills 50 independently owned and operated businesses on Small Business Saturday and everyday. Remember to shop local. 28

Moon Festival Tea Meditation
Basking under the bright glow of the full moon, hundreds of people gathered last month at Orlando’s Guang Ming Temple to celebrate the traditional Asian holiday of the Moon Festival, also called Mid-Autumn Festival. Amidst a crackling fire in the courtyard, children and adults alike enjoyed warm tea, munched on snacks, shared stories – and of course, savored the different flavors of moon cakes: lotus seed paste, mashed mung bean, red bean, walnut, dates, green tea powder and often an egg yolk or two inside which also represent the moon! Traditionally, the Moon Festival was a time for families and friends to gather – much like the American holiday Thanksgiving – and celebrate the fall harvest and being able to spend time with each other. To spice up the festivities, Chinese folklore even has intricate stories about a budding romance that couldn’t be, ending up with the beautiful heroine becoming a moon goddess! Contrary to popular misconceptions though, Buddhism is not about worshipping Moon Goddesses or the various deities of Chinese folk religions. Instead, Buddhism is about finding wisdom in understanding our true nature, and using this insight in living a happy, fulfilling life. Gazing at the full moon above, with a cup of tea in our hands, we are completely awake as we slowly savor the aroma, tasting the sweetness, feeling the drink warm in our mouth and throat, letting the entire body relax. With a smile, our mind is one with our body, mindfulness is then held perfectly! Mindfulness is the energy of being aware and awake to the present. It is keeping one’s consciousness alive to the present reality. To begin anew and to look deeply and honestly at
of the nature.
By Conchita Hsu 俞孟貞
ourselves, it frees us of forgetfulness and enables us to live, to be here and now and enjoy the present moment. The past is past and the future isn’t even here yet. Only in the awareness of the present, can our mind feel the pleasant warmth of the tea and only at the present moment can our mind appreciate the beauty
“Breathing in I know that I am breathing in. Breathing out I know that I am breathing out.” We need not control our breath. We feel the breath as it actually is. It may be long or short, deep or shallow. Our breathing is a stable ground that we take refuge in at our meditation. No matter what perceptions, emotions, or distractions, our breathing is always with us like a faithful friend. While meditating, we are easily carried away or sunken in a deep emotion, or scattered in worries and projects. It is imperative we return to our breathing awareness to collect and anchor our mind. Every breath we take, we feel how light and natural, how calm and peaceful our breathing functions. We bring the energy of mindfulness into each moment of our life and experience joy in life!
without regrets. Even when looking at garbage, we don’t need to suppress repulsive thoughts, but rather recognize them and then realize their illusory nature - imagine the beauty of a flower that grows from the trash’s compost. The path of transformation can be hidden, but wherever there is suffering, we can cultivate understanding and compassion. To carry out this practice can be difficult at first, but an excellent start for beginners is sitting meditation for five minutes at the beginning and end of each day. Participants understand that every day, when we wake up with a gift of 24 brand new hours to live, that we have the capacity to use this gift to bring peace, joy, and happiness to ourselves and others. And indeed, after the night of roasting snacks on the bonfire and enjoying tea and moon cakes under the auspicious full moon, everyone could feel the warmth of a calm mind and the joy arising from within.
Venerable Miau Hwa, visiting from Taiwan and formerly the director at Fo Guang Shan in Miami, had spent a full year practicing meditation at FGS Buddha’s Light headquarters in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. She shared her experience and expertise, teaching meditation posture and techniques. Particularly popular were the stretching exercises, which directed full attention to focus on one move at a time while consciously breathing to be back in contact with our inner self. The exercises nourished, healed and protected everyone’s body and mind.
Buddhist philosophy on mindfulness, which itself is only one component of the religion, is much more profound that can be written about in this article. It is part of a worldwide organization, Buddha’s Light International Association, which began in Taiwan but since has spread to hundreds of locations in over 60 countries. Master Hsing Yun, the founder of Fo Guang Shan Buddha’s Light, calls for the application of Buddhism into daily life – that is, Humanistic Buddhism. It is through this principle that Guang Ming Temple offers classes and fun activities for the general public, ranging from adult Yoga classes to children’s Wushu classes, to having a teahouse with scrumptious vegetarian treats inside the complex. There are also English Buddhism classes and discussion groups. Check out schedules at www.orlandobuddhism.org or call the temple at 407 281 8482. Twenty minutes of self sitting meditation is held every Sunday morning at 10:00am, and also an hour of meditation on the 4th Wednesday of each month at 7:30pm.
Venerable Miau Hwa, along with Guang Ming Temple’s Venerable Chueh Yen also talked on how to realize and live in the present. Mindfulness should be practiced every day and every hour - whether walking, sitting, working, even doing such mundane tasks such as washing the dishes, we should do so with appreciation and
Conchita Hsu 俞孟貞, oversaw the Full Moon Celebration serving as President of the Orlando Chapter of Fo Guang Shan BLIA Buddha’s Light International Association. She practices Mahayana Buddhism to live within a humanistic nature, striving to emancipate beings from suffering prior to self salvation. She can be reached at conchita.hsu@gmail.com.
